WENDY HOUSES As previously communicated, the Board of Directors approved a 3 year amnesty to all residents of existing unauthorized wendy houses and similar temporary structures. The amnesty period will expire on 31 May 2012. All wendy houses or structures must be removed or sited

out of view by 31 May 2012. We would like to draw your attention once again to the Rules & Regulations. Rule 8 under Streetscape states that: Wendy houses visible from the street are only allowed as temporary

The Chairman’s Trophy was certainly a highlight this past month with the Desert Rats in burgundy and red, the Vleipaddas in shades of green and the Mountain Goats in stone or beige playing against each other for the trophy. Proud Captain, Phoebus Minkner of the Mountain Goats received the trophy on behalf of the winning team, however,with the support on the 12th fairway,the Desert Rats outshone the rest in spirit and will be back again next year with the shots! It was also a privilege to launch the Sanlam Cancer Challenge at Centurion and even though the day was hampered by wet weather, spirits were not and I trust the competition will continue bringing awareness and great golf as it continues throughout the year. We are pleased that we will be hosting the Club Professionals National Championships from 7 to 10 May 2012 and extend some Centurion hospitality. The Golf AGM has come and gone and procedures have been put in place for the committee to move forward. Please be patient with us and if at any stage you feel you could make a worthwhile contribution please consider joining the committee. Welcome to all the new members, especially the Juniors who joined us last month, many from Tuks Academy. The policy regarding Juniors playing on the custom competition days i.e. Thursday (pm) all day Saturday and Sunday (am) was defined and further information is available in the pro shop. It’s great to have so many youngsters around and we look forward to watching their careers unfold here at Centurion.

This month handicap news clears up any confusion over the number of 2 or 3 overs permitted per round for handicap purposes and explains the penalty for entering N/R scores online. Recent changes to the handicap system have been well received with few complaints. But there is some confusion over the number of 2 or 3 overs a player may take for handicap scoring purposes. Essentially players with handicaps 18 and below can enter 2-overs on every hole, while players with handicaps 19 and above can enter 3-overs on all 18 holes. The number of 2 overs you can take is not limited to your specific handicap – for example a 5 handicap golfer could record 2-overs on all 18 holes, although that would be a very bad day on the course! From now on the penalty for entering a N/R score late will be the same as for entering a valid score after the 72 hour deadline - i.e. the penalty score entered will be the player’s lowest score of his last 20.

The ladies section has again had quite a busy month. We held our second Ladies Mini Open on Thursday 29 March which was again sponsored by Carol Anne from the Jean Ave Spar (the Spar next to the Dros). We are very fortunate to have Carol Anne as our sponsor as the Mini Open is proving to be very popular. There was a bad storm during the night before the Mini Open and when I woke up to light rain I was unsure as to how many of the 72 ladies that had booked would arrive to play. When I arrived at the club just before 7am a little anxious as to how successful the day would be, (rain still falling) all my fears were lifted as there were ladies from surrounding clubs and from as far afield as Benoni, sitting on the patio waiting to play. The rain stopped just as the first four-ball teed off. It ended up being a lovely day for golf. Thanks to all the ladies who, despite the rain, still arrived to play as it is your participation that made the day the huge success that it turned out to be. Carol Anne’s Spar has recently been renovated, it is a very clean, well-stocked, friendly Spar, so please do pop in and support her. The format for the Mini Open was a four-ball alliance.

I have made myself available to serve another term on the committee as Lady Captain if elected at the AGM. From a non-golfing side of things, don’t become too complacent when you have workers at your home. Last week I had a reputable company that is registered with CHOA, and has been working on the Estate for the last 6 years, at my home doing a couple of odd jobs for me. I was more than satisfied with the quality of their work but as they left I noticed that my golf bag, which was in our garage where they had been working, had been tampered with (the cement finger marks all over the golf bag was a dead giveaway). Anyway, to cut a long story short, I called Zena at Homeowners who dealt with the matter immediately and within half an hour I had what was taken from me returned. Well done to the Homeowners and Coin Security. It has taught me a lesson to be more careful and aware of leaving things lying around when you have workers at your home. Hayley Mendes

I would like to thank Jannes, Hans and Johnathan for all their assistance in making sure all the score cards were in and finalizing the prize giving for me, they are always willing to assist wherever needed.

On 30 March Centurion Country Club hosted the Sanlam Cansa Launch. Debra Arroyo, Rosa Lombard and Dee Meredith represented the CCC ladies section. The day was enjoyed by all who took part despite the dreadful weather. The golf was followed by a function in the dining room to launch the Sanlam Cansa Challenge 2012 to try and encourage more clubs to get involved in this good cause to raise money for Cancer research. Last Sunday saw the Chairman’s Trophy being played and I am pleased to announce that we ‘Mountain Goats’ won the trophy. It was a great day, very well run, thanks to the CHOA you guys did a great job, looking forward to playing again next year. Ladies leagues are starting shortly so please if you would like to take part in the league put your name down - the sheets are on the notice board outside the pro shop. The foursomes and mixed knock outs have now started so make sure you arrange your match in plenty of time, the draw is on the club notice board.

Our Thursday Ladies Medal final was played on 15 March. Congratulations go to Rosa Lombard as she is the 2011 Medal Champion. Our Thursday ladies quarterly prize giving will be taking place on 11 May at the Fishmonger @ Centurion Gate. I have been serving on the committee for the last 2 years alongside Marianne Fraser who was our Lady Captain. I have filled in as Lady Captain for the last couple of months as Marianne has relocated down to the Cape, I wish her well in her new home.
