Decrease! No, not a decrease in the amount of crime, or grime, or even corruption, but a decrease in the amount of paper put out for the Mondi paper collectors twice a month. Considering the last letter I wrote complimented everyone on the amount of paper going up, the reverse is now true. Either people have lost interest in the amount of money that Mondi gives to our local Hospice and to the S.P.C.A., or there are less people living on the Estate than there used to be and I can’t believe that. Should there be new residents here who do not know about our paper collection scheme, twice a month we put out our orange bags, which can be obtained from the Home Owners Association, and the amount of paper is credited to us and the proceeds given to the above mentioned causes. The collection is always on a Friday and, should you not see the Mondi sign at the main gate, the dates of collection for the next few weeks are: 18 November and 2 December, and then if you have a lot of wrapping paper left over from Christmas, 20 January. Apart from the amount of money given to causes, there is a carbon footprint to be considered – it is far more ecologically beneficial to use recycled paper than to go chopping down trees. Let’s see a real effort in putting paper not in the Tuesday rubbish bag, but the Friday Mondi bag. Sue Miles

In the last week the ‘Christmas Spirit’ has surfaced on our Estate. Christmas lights have appeared on our gatehouse and around the trees. The Christmas Tree of Lights is also in the process of being erected at the Estate entrance. By the time that this Interface is distributed, our entrance will be all lit up and ready for the Festive Season, and many of our houses will also be lit up. A challenge to our residents: Light up your home and win a first or a second prize which will be a Sunday lunch for a couple at the Centurion Country Club. Chris might even allow me to climb onto the roof again and risk my life putting up our own lights! Evaluations will be done on the evening of 23 December 2011 and our judges will be Mr. Hilmar Venter and Mr. Hardy Botha. Evaluations to be done by the judges individually and the decision will be final. Let us spread this ‘Christmas Spirit’ to those who are looking after us every day, our dedicated team of security guards. Remember, any donations towards the guards are totally voluntary and any amount is appreciated. Please pay the amount into the CHOA account and as a reference state ‘Guard bonuses’ together with your stand number.

CAPTAIN’S REPORT Well, it certainly has been a very busy month at the club with the knockouts coming to an end, the leagues all being finalised, the Invitational, year-end functions and a golf game for me in Mauritius! - to mention but a few. Starting off with the Invitational that is hosted in more detail elsewhere in this edition, a huge thank you to all those who participated; to all that made it possible; to Yamaha, special thanks to Jannes and Karen who ensured that we got the best value for our money, and appreciation to Carol who was scrambling eggs at our house very early on the morning of departure. A good time was had by all and well done to the following worthy recipients of Yamaha sponsored prizes: Maurice Odendaal, Sue Smith, Lefty Piagalis, Hayley Mendes, Mark Fichardt, Shaun Cambier, Martin Carelse and Adriaan du Randt. Please remember that the Invitational was instituted to replace the Annual Captains Dinner which then became a Dinner and Dance affair and for four years now, has been a successful occasion having visited Elements, Euphoria, Zebula and now the Gary Player Course at Sun City. Because it is a social occasion the format is not restricted and has varied from year to year, however, the winner of the day does receive the grand floating trophy originally donated by Lefty. Bottom line is that while it has become an institution enjoyed by many, it is an occasion that will take place at the discretion of the Captain in term. League has come to an end and after boasting about the Juniors last month, hats off to the Saturday ladies who came second to PCC and congratulations to the mixed league who won their pool for the Bianca and Emma second year. Together with our esteemed ladies scratch league champions, Emma de Bruyn and Bianca Barnard, they would have received their well-earned medals at a ceremony at Wingate during November. Many thanks to all who took the time and effort to represent the club and to
those who did not achieve, there is always next year. Special thanks to Hayley for organising the mixed and putting together winning combinations when it counted. The knockouts still have a few rounds to play but special mention must be made of Debra Arroyo and Sue Smith who are the last ladies left standing in the foursomes and are challenging Herman Minnie (Club Champion 2011) and Pro Shop Hans in the finals. That’s the spirit girls – take on the young guns! An unplanned visit to Mauritius and a great game of golf at the amazing Legends course at Belle Mare Plage was an absolute highlight for me during October. The course, home to the Mauritius Open, was beautiful and at the same time, it was great to touch base with Essie Steinmann familiar to many of us and to see how she has settled down in her new homeland.
d Essie Barr y an
For those of you who are wondering how Essie is doing, she seems very much at home in her new surroundings and took time off to show us around the Hugh Baiocchi course as well as the interesting foreign investment property opportunities she is marketing, and she sends her love (and contact details) to all.
Back home our course is looking great after the first summer rains, although the efforts at no 7 have not completely solved our problems, all efforts are being made to save the course from the possibility of the flooding river. The visit from the Peter Matkovich representative just reiterated our problem and it appears without a lot of money we will have to continue doing the best we can. When the course does get drenched please consider the cart 90 degree rule and respect the no cart rule when it is implemented. It is never without reason. The course really is picturesque and with some of the carts available in the Pro Shop it may be a good time to encourage the walk as an effort to good health. Well the stores are full of Christmas decorations reminding us that the year is coming to an abrupt end and soon the Christmas lights will light up the homes on the Estate. What a year and what a privilege to wish you all the very best this Festive season. Celebrate, enjoy and embrace the true meaning of Christmas. Till next year, safe travel and God bless always. Barry

CAPTAIN’S INVITATIONAL The Captains Invitational 2011 got off to an awesome start with everyone meeting at the clubhouse parking area for Welcome drinks, Gary Player CC Golf shirt gifts and personalised bag tags. Breakfast, juice and the Sunday papers were enjoyed on the bus ride to Sun City and we arrived just in time for the first tee off at 09h50.

On the coach the format for the day was announced and the playing field was evened out by calculating the stableford points over 12 holes that had been preselected and sealed in an envelope by the Club Management prior to departure. It was also decided that the men would play off of the back tees so that those Million Dollar golfers arriving in December Sue, la would follow in our footsteps this dies ch ampio year. n There were great prizes sponsored by Yamaha for three closest to the pins, second and third, best ladies score and best men’s score, the higher taking the trophy. There was also a worthwhile fun four ball alliance within the Individual competition. The extreme heat did not stand in the way of our very worthy winners who were announced at a thirst quenching boma supper at the Shebeen in the Sun City Complex. Well done to Maurice Odendaal who came first amongst the 22 guys and Sue Smith who outplayed the 16 ladies. Runner-up was Lefty Piagalis and Mark Fichardt followed in third place. The closest to the pins were won by Hayley Mendes, Mark Fichardt and Shaun Cambier, the guys who also made up the winning four ball alliance with Martin Carelse and Adriaan du Randt. All round a great day with much celebration taking place on the bus trip home. My special thanks to all who made the day possible: the club, the organisers and especially the golfers without whom the day would not have been possible. Barry Robinson | NOVEMBER 2011 | pg 12

NEWS FROM THE CLUB HOUSE Paul
Mooi sp eel, tannie A nna!
Some of you may have been to the club house recently and spotted the activities on the go - painting and the start of upgrading furniture and fittings. When we moved into the club house some 15 years ago it was beautiful, upmarket and absolutely splendid. However, after so many years the fact that there is still original furniture and fittings left to re-upholster and repair bears witness to the fact that good quality is always worth the price. We are about to forward a questionnaire to all the residents regarding the club house and the activities that occur there. We would love to know what you expect from your club house, the service you receive and the activities you would like to see on offer.
Ray and Christo
We are restoring the ‘restaurant’ and are not quite sure of the direction to go. Should we do an upmarket restaurant? A family restaurant? And what food would you like to see served there? There are many questions and so many suggestions that you, the residents of this Estate, could offer and we could act upon.
a Wim and Ann Charlott
e and S ias
We have had many functions at the club house over the years, such as the time Tony Postma organised a ‘murder’ evening with the Irene Dramatic Society (and what a hit that was). We would like to do quiz evenings as well as special dancing and singing evenings such as we had in the past. There were some I would rather forget! But all was done with the intention of bringing the residents to the club house. Fanie swanepoel always organised a ‘potjie’ evening and a ‘boere’ evening. I would love to receive suggestions from you. Please contact me, Anne Adelaar on 083 255 4134.

THE FOLDAWAY, QUALITY ALUMINIUM WASHLINES. Unlike the majority of wash line products on the market, our wash lines are made from aluminium. Most washing lines are made from steel or galvanized steel which have the potential to rust sooner or later. Aluminium does not rust and it is also very light which makes it extremely easy to operate. Our washing lines are professionally powder coated to provide a very nice weatherproof finish. All of the machine screws used in the assembly of our washing line are stainless steel.

LADY CAPTAIN’S REPORT Centurion hosted the final Ladies Open for 2011 on 29 September 2011 and we are happy to report that we had our biggest field yet. Over 80 ladies joined us for a lovely day. Golfers came from all over - from the Northern side of Pretoria to the Southern parts of Johannesburg and they commented on the great condition of our golf course. We are truly fortunate to play on such a well-manicured course, thanks to Petri, Igor and the greenkeeping team. Our winners of the day were Anna Skinner and Sue Miles - well done I believe you played a great game. The ladies were full of praise for an outstanding lunch served at prize giving thanks to Amarille and her team. Thanks to Nicola for all the organising before and on the day - we would not be able to do it without you.

Van Zyl wins record third Telkom PGA Pro-Am title Michael Vlismas
Jaco van Zyl claimed a record third consecutive Telkom PGA Pro-Am title with a convincing six-shot victory at Centurion Country Club. Van Zyl returned home from the European Tour to defend his title in this event, and closed with a 64 to win on 19 under par. Jean Hugo took second place on 13 under with a final round of 67, while Justin Walters finished third on 12 under following a 71. Alex Haindl finished superbly with four straight birdies for a 65 and a share of fourth on 11 under par. And Bradford Vaughan also signed off his tournament on a positive note, with a front nine of 30 in his 65, including seven consecutive threes. He finished tied seventh on nine under. But there was little any of them could do to stop Van Zyl on the final day. The Johannesburg professional teed off tied for the lead with Walters, and immediately birdied the first hole. Hugo did his best to chase down Van Zyl, also making birdie at the
first and a further three consecutive birdies to the turn. But Van Zyl kept answering the challenge, reeling off four consecutive birdies from the seventh and then closing with four birdies over the final five holes to take the title. “Winning this three times in a row is really, really nice. It’s way beyond my expectations. Winning any event takes a lot of hard work and to do it three years in a row is very special,” said Van Zyl. “I feel so comfortable on this course and on the greens here that I feel almost like a member.” The victory comes amidst what has been a breakthrough year for Van Zyl on the international circuit. After his second place finish in the European Tour’s Trophee Hassan II earlier this year, Van Zyl was convinced he had what it took to compete regularly on that tour. He’s since focused his energies there and came into this tournament with three top-20 finishes and a third place in the Omega European Masters and roughly R4-
million in earnings. “I’ve been playing well the last few weeks and I felt really good about this week. But to be honest, the last three years have been really good to me. Every year I look back on a great year and wonder what’s next. Fortunately, every year has been better than the last. And now here I am looking ahead to next year and some new goals and plans.”
