MOVING FORWARD LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
The CHOA Board of Directors has been hard at work behind the scenes looking at ways to uplift the Estate. A brief report from the Chairman, Sias de Klerk, in this issue sums up the most important challenges in each portfolio and as such, we look forward to positive change. One of the biggest challenges facing the communication portfolio is the most efficient way to do so. Interface has been a part of the Estate for many years and, although a paperless environment is becoming the new trend, we have always
found this magazine to be welcomed by residents. However, we do feel the need to move with the times and so from next year, Interface will be focusing on the addition of lifestyle content to each issue. We hope to include editorial pieces that you will find valuable, entertaining and worth the read. As such, in order to ensure effective delivery of a more upmarket magazine, as of 2016 Interface will be published on a bi-monthly basis. The aim is to build this magazine into a positive marketing tool that will help promote Centurion Residential Estate and Country Club as the prestigious Estate that we have all come to love. You will notice a few changes as from this issue as we prepare to deliver a new and improved Interface next year. Till next month

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
As we head towards the end of the year, and with the recent changes in our Board of Directors, I thought it would be helpful to briefly report on each portfolio within the HOA Board. More detailed reporting will follow in due course from each portfolio director.
Security The main focus of the HOA Board remains security simply because most home owners invest in our Estate due to our excellent security record. We are extremely critical of the security system, in all aspects, and although short comings do get identified from time to time, the Board is very satisfied with the overall performance of our security personnel, security systems and the security service provider.
Aesthetics and Infrastructure Continuous improvement on the facilities and infrastructure of the Estate is very important to ensure that the image and functionality of the Estate is at an acceptable level. We have started with the upgrade of the top gate and the upgrade of the tennis courts will start mid November 2015.
Strategic planning The Board has identified that more efforts needs to go into strategic planning of the Estate. The objective is to include all facilities and infrastructure. The success of the Estate is measured in all the areas and disciplines, and not just in one or two high priority areas. The constant growth of property values in our Estate necessitates that the Estate must be a
success story as a whole. The Board thus has decided to coopt Heyno Smith to drive strategic planning.
Finance The financial position of the Estate remains very strong and it is the Board’s objective to strengthen the financial position of the HOA in the future. The weak micro and macro economy remains very bleak, now and for the foreseeable future. This will bring many challenges and a strong balance sheet is vital to counter the challenges that will face our Estate.
Communication Effective communication is and will always be, a challenge because of many practical reasons. Some people make use of electronic media, others not. Some simply do not have the time read what gets communicated to them, especially if it is not simple and effective. The board is in the process of evaluating tools to improve the communication to our homeowners.
5
I would like to thank all the homeowners who are supporting the Board in their efforts and wish to assure everyone, even if there is sometimes frustration that the focus is to continuously improve our Estate.
Sias de Klerk

CHOA CELEBRATES ARBOUR WEEK
The new Director Infrastructure and Aesthetics, Mr Philip Lourens planted a Combretum erythrophyllum tree (Bushwillow) during Arbour Week. The CHOA also planted an additional 50 trees along the river and walking trail area. The Estate is well known for the amount of trees planted over the years and the CHOA hope to inspire all residents to continue this tradition. We encourage residents to plant more indigenous trees but be considerate of the future when identifying a location in your garden.
CAMEL GOLF BIKE
September 2015 saw the release of Oom Fanie’s Camel Golf Bike! For those who are slightly confused, this is a converted bicycle and may just be the next big thing in golf.
7
For those looking for some exercise on the course, this is most definitely the answer. For the next month these bikes will be on trial so please feel free to head down the pro shop and play your next round with the Camel Golf Bike.

DON’T KILL THE WORLD Greenpeace’s last Energy [R]evolution report starts with a somewhat dramatic quote: “Will we look into the eyes of our children and confess That we had the opportunity, but lacked the courage? That we had the technology, but lacked the vision? Each of us can be part of the solution towards saving Mother Earth from global warming, starting at home where we can do our part, recycling and saving to reduce our carbon footprint. Energy efficiency demands a closer look in recent times at how we use energy, due to rising prices, the uncomfortable load-shedding by ESKOM, with many a grudge purchase made to generate even more earth-unfriendly power. Whilst the Gupta’s are said to be getting billions in coal deals, we are uncertain as to what exactly is cooking, bubbling or boiling at ESKOM… Load shedding has been comfortably absent for the best part of two months, however talk on the streets is clearly that ESKOM is not out of the woods, with recent newspaper reports indicating the requirement for capital in excess of R200 billion to modernize an outdated grid system. Whichever way it goes, our social conscience should lead us to live greener, more energy-conscious lives… whilst, as an added benefit, saving money! BUT HOW? About 10% of the average household’s electricity bill goes towards lighting. By simply converting from the standard around 50 watt incandescent or CFL bulbs to energy-efficient 5 watt LED lights, your footprint is already shrinking! And the expected life-time of an LED easily makes up for the price difference anyway! However, hot water generation is by far the biggest contributor to most domestic electricity bills - some 40% of typical household power expenditure will be on this item, without prior implementation of efficiency measures. These efficiency measures can include a geyser blanket, a timer to control the usage of the geyser element and replacing the old geyser with, or even adding a solar geyser or heat pump. A heat pump will amount to a saving of around 2/3rds on the hot water part of your bill. It works, rain or shine, night and day, but does require a certain (but lesser) amount of electricity. Solar geysers only heat water when the sun is shining on the solar heat collector, which can result in electricity savings of up to 80% (when sized correctly), in your water heating electricity usage. Both solar collectors and heat pumps are programmed to let the geyser element come on as soon as the water temperature reaches a certain minimum, thus avoiding many go-greeners’ disappointment when a heat pump or solar geyser does not supply sufficient hot water and the last, unlucky person has to shower cold. Correct system sizing is very important and is based on the number of people and their typical habits (e.g. morning or evening showers, lengthy baths, etc.). Furthermore retrofitted (on existing geyser) systems will not increase hot water supply, it only heats your water cheaper.
And as ESKOM rates soar, more people are looking at alternatives. (Graphic from www.poweroptimal.com. Infographic: Eskom tariff increases vs inflation since 1988 (with projections to 2017 by Sean Moolman) According to the Department of Energy, the southern African region, and in fact the whole of Africa, has sunshine all year round. The annual 24-hour global solar radiation collection average is about 220 W/m2 for South Africa, compared with about 150 W/m2 for parts of the USA, and about 100 W/m2 for Europe and the United Kingdom. This makes South Africa’s local resource one of the highest in the world. Photovoltaic (PV) systems have become more popular in recent years. Whilst the initial capital layout is still fairly high, with electricity rates continuing their increase trends, your ultimate return on investment will be tough to beat! There are basically three types of PV systems: • Grid-tied. No battery back-up, and when ESKOM is off so is your power generation. Feedback tariffs have been approved in most European countries, and with ESKOM’s capacity in short supply the option should soon be available in South Africa too. This is the most cost-effective solar system, but without a backup solution. • Hybrid systems. This system is similar to grid-tied but includes battery back-up, with the batteries being charged when the sun shines from your PV solar panels. When ESKOM is off, you still have power. A mindshift towards efficient energy usage is essential, as you will otherwise need building plans to house more of the (rather expensive) batteries… • Off-grid systems. This is what we all want, however, moneywise, this really only makes sense if you are building a new house in an area where ESKOM will be charging you an arm and a leg for the connection. The reason is that the system has to be designed to accommodate worst-case scenarios, i.e. days and perhaps even weeks of no-sun periods.
9
Batteries remain the pricey item in the PV list. Developments are ongoing, and it has consistently become more affordable in recent years. A few pointers when choosing to invest in green energy: • Penny-wise pound-foolish is often accurate in green energy. Be pound wise! • Choose established brands and installers with sufficient support in South Africa. Seemingly ‘similar’ solar systems can vary greatly in their output power, capacity and longevity. • How a system can be programmed makes a big difference in how much the end-consumer saves. This also holds true for LED lights, solar geysers and heat pumps. • Do ask about warranty and support – and request references and a track-record! So let’s go green and endeavour to pursue a zero footprint! Article by Dr. Anina van der Bijl, Green Energy Consultant, One Energy Centurion INTERFACE | OCTOBER 2015

CAPTAIN’S REPORT
We have been blessed with wonderful rain for this time of the year and this has beautified our golf course. More than 28 mm of rain fell at the beginning of September and judging by the already greenness of our fairways, we have started on a very positive note.
On the social front we have introduced a 9 hole Par 3 challenge which we are going to play on some of the available afternoons when we have no corporate golf days taking place. The first 9 hole Par 3 challenge was very successful, but judging by the low scores, probably too easy for some of our golfers so we shall make it more challenging next time. The Par 3 challenge was followed by a prego evening in the pub and was well-supported by all the members. Watch our notice boards for the next 9 hole challenge and be sure to take part. By the time you are reading this article, the 19th Hole Pizzeria will be fully operational and hopefully well supported. This should prove to be a winner among all our golfers and residents. Also, the Rugby World Cup is in full swing and we would like to encourage all our residents and members to come and watch the games at the pub in the clubhouse. Our last monthly Captain’s Challenge was won by Carlos and Debra Arroyo with a very competitive score of 51 better ball points. Congrats and well played! A special thanks to Peter from Hokaai for sponsoring the prizes and for their continued support at the club!

The SA Women’s Interprovincial Tournament was hosted by Gauteng North Golf Union at our beautiful golf course and was played the week of 28 September 2015 with the final round on Friday, 2 October 2015. It was an honour and a privilege for our club to successfully host this event. The WGSA and GNGU were very impressed with how smoothly the team at the club handled the tournament. The winning team of the tournament was Gauteng Ladies Golf. We have come to the end of our leagues and in general all the teams have represented Centurion Country Club well, with the mixed league topping their division. Well done to all the winners and thanks to all the members who participated in the league this year. AA Milne said, “Golf is so popular because it is the best game in the world at which to be bad at.” Happy golfing

HOKAAI CAPTAIN’S CHALLENGE
On Saturday, 26 September 2015 we hosted the monthly Hokaai Captains Challenge. Can you believe that there are only two more left to play this year! That being said, be sure to diarise the last Saturday’s of October and November to ensure you don’t miss out. Congratulations to Debra and Carlos Arroyo who managed to clinch the win. George Briedenham managed to win not one, but two of the three lucky draws that evening! Thanks, once again, to Hokaai for their more than generous sponsorship of this great event.

CHIP OFF THE OLD BLOCK
The Chip off the Old Block took place on Sunday, 13 September 2015. This annual event sees parent and child teams take to our course in order to win the coveted trophy which was donated by Toby Adelaar. This is most arguably the coolest trophy around. It was, once again, a very popular tournament with a great atmosphere.
Congratulations to our winners, Oom Jan Schutte and his son Andre Schutte.

PAR 3 SUNDOWNER COMPETITION
On Friday, 18 September 2015 we changed things up a bit and converted the front nine, into a par 3 course. This caused much excitement with 50 players of which 3 were first time golfers, coming down to practise their short game. There was a
fabulous atmosphere on the course and afterwards on the patio. Thanks to Peter Roodt of Hokaai butchery, for his generous sponsorship of the event. We will definitely host another one before the end of the year so be sure to watch this space.

LIFE LANDSCAPES IF WE TAKE CARE OF OUR TREES, IN RETURN, OUR TREES WILL TAKE CARE OF US
How we take care of our trees One of the ways we take care of our trees in the Estate is by crown lifting - this is the process of removal of the lowest branches, side branches, or parts of branches of trees.
Large branches growing directly from the trunk are not removed as this can cause large wounds to the tree which can become extensively decayed leading to further long term problems or more short term biomechanical instability. We always ensure that the crown lifting is restricted to less than 15% of the live crown height and that we leave the crown at least two thirds of the total height of the tree. Crown lifting lets in more light and wind under the tree, and makes more room for people to walk underneath.
How our trees take care of us 14
Life Landscapes continues to create beautiful, healthy landscapes that control weeds and conserve water using plant/tree trimmings as mulch. We try to chip what we prune directly back into the landscape, right where we take it out. Tree prunings, brush, grass clippings and leaves are chipped or shredded and then used as organic mulch in the Estate’s gardens. Mulch at the base of trees is critical for healthy tree growth in turf areas. Turf can rob trees of needed water, create shallow tree root growth and mowers too close to the trunks can destroy the bark and kill the tree. Mulch promotes healthy plants by: • Reducing the competition from weeds • Keeping the soil moist and at an even temperature • Controlling erosion • Adding organic matter that feeds beneficial soil organisms • Preventing soil compaction

CHRISTMAS BONUSES FOR OUR GUARDS
The first Christmas decorations have gone up in the stores. Advent calendars and chocolates have been beautifully arranged at checkout counters, and once again it is time for my yearly appeal on behalf of our guards. The year has flown by, winter has come and gone, summer is here and the holidays are not too far away. Only about 66 more shopping days to go until Christmas Day! Little voices are asking what Farther Christmas will be bringing this year. I do hope that Father Christmas will be bringing a little something for our guards as well. Many of our residents ask why I am appealing for a donation for our guards. I strongly believe that a small token of our appreciation towards the guards will go a long way towards strengthening our relationship with them and the lack of crime on our Estate is a testament to the dedication of our security company. We are now into our fourth year of no outside crime on the Estate. We are one of the most sought after estates in South Africa because of
our crime free record. This is thanks to the very dedicated security personnel and company that guard our Estate. The donations are totally voluntary and any amount is welcome. The board of the Homeowners Association will again be adding an amount to our appeal, depending entirely upon the performance of the guards. Please pay the amount you would like to donate into the CHOA account and as a reference please state “Guard bonuses together with your stand number. A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME
Although a man’s home is his castle, there is no reason why this right should not be extended to any lady. According to the old song, the man or lady owning the castle had the right to plant almost anything in his/her country garden, on condition that it was English. If memory serves right:
“Daffodils, heart’s ease and flox Meadowsweet and lady smocks Gentian, lupine and tall hollihocks Roses, foxgloves, snowdrops, blue forget-me-nots”. However, the most superficial research will show that some, most or none of the treasured plants quoted above are English by origin. Even the rose, thought to be the most English of all English flowers and national flower of Scotland, has its origin in Asia. But the times they are a changing to the better, to quote yet another songwriter. No longer can a home owner adorn his/ her garden with any plant, shrub, flower or tree to the heart’s delight. As in most spheres of life in South Africa, legislation regulates plants considered for gardening. This legislation, like all good rules, are not only complex but also consists of extended lists detailing plants of all kinds, shapes, sizes and origin denoting which are fit and which are unfit for adorning your garden.
24
The legislation also has the threat of sanctions that will scare even the most avid gardener into the living room, casting the shadow of a prison cell on any transgressor. The reason for the legislation is quite obvious and not hard to find. Invasive and/or alien plants have been brought to South Africa from other countries for their beauty, economic value or ecological purpose. Plants or its seeds were brought into the country in animal feed, stuck to tent canvas and animals, by mail order on ships and planes. As these plants are in an environment without the natural enemies, these plants reproduce and spread unhindered. Invasive plants spread rapidly and take up the growing space of the slower growing, indigenous plants. Ecological many of the invasive plants use higher volumes of water, a scarce resource in South Africa. The alien plant material could even cause the change the soil. See the website of the City of Tshwane for a detailed background on the necessity of the legislation. Consider the following two examples regarding the valid environmentally sound reasoning behind the legislation: During the early twentieth century the Australian wattle tree was imported into South Africa to serve as a fast growing source of timber for the production of supporting poles in the mining industry. However, it soon became clear that this species of tree was particularly and aggressively invasive. Subsequently, steps were taken to regulate the planting and growing of these trees. The matter was, and still is, not quite so simple. The wattle tree spread unhindered and more OCTOBER 2015 | INTERFACE
specifically if taken down incorrectly. The wattle tree also produces tannin in its bark which is and extremely important ingredient in our modern leather industry. And despite all regulation and attempts, wattle trees are a common site in what were previously grasslands, an important filtering mechanism for ground water. The second example is the beloved Jacaranda Tree. A tree well-known in Pretoria and the greater Tshwane area, proudly displaying its unique floral coat during October. This specie was also imported from Australia and planted in vast quantities in Pretoria and elsewhere. As time progressed it became clear that the Jacaranda Tree use large quantities of water, thus prejudicial to indigenous species due to the scarcity of water in the dryer South African environment. Some of these Jacaranda Trees ended up on farms where these trees were planted near the homestead, to spread its seeds into the environment. And in the same ignorance, so did a number of other trees get a foothold in our environment. Just think of all the eucalyptus, willow, lantana, seringa, poplar and oak trees in our gardens and on our sidewalks. As we all endeavour to entice birds into our gardens, sweep the pavements and put the seedpods and other plant debris in the landfill, we all, without even realising it, contribute to the spreading of these invasive plants into our environment, even if we thought it is contained to a single plant in our garden. To deal with this complex question and to protect our indigenous fauna and flora, government enacted the National Environment Management: Biodiversity Act (10 of 2004), referred to “NEMBA”. This act is but one of a number of legislation focusing on the management of the national environment of our country in a number of sectors as the combined object. The NEMBA legislation is lengthy and complex. A detailed analysis of the act falls outside the scope of this contribution, but Chapter 5 of the act which deals with alien and invasive plants is important to take cognisance of. The important term in this chapter is “restricted activity”. This term has an elaborate definition, but generally means more or less any form of handling of a species of plant, for example gathering, collecting, using, cultivating, importing and exporting of plants. These defined “restricted activity” in respect of some species is totally forbidden, for other species it is permissible, but only after the issuing of a permit. All the do’s and don’ts are collated in a list which is published by the minister responsible for the administration of the act. The most recent, and most comprehensive, of these lists were published in the Government Gazette of 1 August 2014. To understand the provisions one must study the act together
with the list as published. All gardeners should read the comprehensive list and take cognisance of the plants thereon.
An important provision for land owners is contained in section 73 which provides: “A person who is the owner of land on which a listed invasive species occurs must1. notify any relevant competent authority, in writing, of the listed invasive species occurring on that land; 2. take steps to control and eradicate the listed invasive species and to prevent it from spreading; and 3. take all the required steps to prevent or minimise harm to biodiversity. The act further provides that, if a listed invasive plant is found on land, the owner of that land must be notified of the presence of such plants and he/she must be given the opportunity to remove it. If he/she fails to do so the penalties of the act will be activated. These penalties include fines up to R10 million and prison terms up to a period of ten years.
25
If your property is leased to a third party, you as the owner will remain liable and responsible for the plants in the gardens and on the property. In conclusion then, it would seem that the prevailing times have even caught up with Shakespeare and that a rose by any other name in the garden may be quite illegal and extremely unwelcome. Perhaps the summer weather should be used not only for a round of golf, but an investigating round in your garden as well.
