REPORT CAPTAIN’s report Is it not amazing how nature changes from one year to another! Typically the end of August sees the trees taking on a green shade and we begin counting the days to the summer rains that tend to come towards the end of September. Imagine everyone’s surprise not only for the first rains, but also the first flooding of the year. WOW – did the heavens open or what?

Matkovich Challenge

Needless to say the course was closed on the Friday and Saturday, but hard work from the green keeping staff got the course playable for the Sunday field. A HUGE thank you to Igor and the team that worked on getting the course playable so quickly and just in time for the IGT tournament that was played from 10 to 13 September 2012. I was fortunate enough to play on the morning of 11 September 2012 and was amazed at how well the course had recovered, and all is well for our hosting of the Telkom Pro Am from 8 to 12 October 2012. The IGT tournament featured a number of our own members and was eventually won by Hertzog Landman who beat Lean Boezaart in a playoff. The inaugural Matkovich Trophy was run on 15 September 2012. This competition is between the 3 Matkovich designed courses in Pretoria namely, Silver Lakes, Woodhill CC and Centurion CC. The format is B/B Stableford and each team consists of 12 players. The 6 betterball scores are added together and the winner declared. Centurion won the trophy with a total of 252, followed by Silver Lakes on 243 and Woodhill on 234. Well Done team! Sunday, 16 September 2012 was scheduled to see the annual running of the ‘Chip off the Old Block’ competition but the hail storm and rain put an end to that, so please keep your eyes on the notice board for the rescheduled date. We were fortunate to have Prof At Schoeman out to inspect our greens and advise us on our POA problem that raises its ugly head from time to time. I have included his report for everyone to read, but in summary, we are doing things correctly. While we are talking about the greens, members are requested to note that we are planning our spring treatment program for 15 to 17 October 2012 and that the course will be closed for the duration. As many of you will have noticed, we are busy 100 the installation of new distance markers with on the sprinkler heads and we would like to 95 thank Barry Robinson and Yamaha for their very generous sponsorship. 75

Spring is in the air. I love this time of the year and we have had some most welcome rain after the dry winter months. Our golf course has been transformed back to its natural glory in no time. Wilma de Wet along with three of her golfing friends Emerine Weber, Riana Joubert and Rina de Fraites won the ‘Ruth Newman’ ladies golf tournament that took place over two days at Sun City. Great stuff Wilma, that is quite an achievement winning that tournament as the Lost City and the Gary Player are two very tough golf courses. The Thursday ladies four monthly prize giving took place at the club on 6 September2012 and Dalene Smith won the trophy for the best average stableford points in the handicap division 0 - 27 with an average of 35 points. Henriette Roux won the trophy for the best average stableford points handicap division 28 - 36 with an average of 34 points. The charity money that was raised on National Woman’s day, 9 August 2012, was handed over at a little function held at the club on 7 September 2012 to the two charities, that being Animals in Distress and Irene Homes. They were most grateful and asked me to pass on a word of appreciation to all who made this day possible.

Our second ladies open of the year took place on 20 September 2012. It was a great day and enjoyed by all who took part. Thembi from the Virgin Active Gym gave us a 15 minute demo on how to do a Zumba Class. A few ladies who had the courage took part, it was fun but hard work after a round of golf and I now know I don’t have rhythm.

Thanks must go to Nicola, Jannes, Hans and Jonathan for helping me put this day together and to Amarille, Stephen and her staff for again doing the Centurion Ladies Open proud by serving an outstanding three course lunch - thanks guys I really do appreciate it. I got great feedback from many of the ladies from neighbouring clubs that took part saying how great our course was looking, friendliness and efficiency of Pro Shop staff and once again, complimented the outstanding lunch. Mini Open here at Centurion CC during November 2012 so please keep an eye on the notice board. Good news for the Ladies Saturday League team, they have won the semi-final play offs and are now in the final against Silver Lakes. It is a home and away final, first leg played on 29 September 2012 here at home and the away match is being played on 6 October 2012. I would like to wish Sue Smith and her team all the best for the final. By the time you read this article all will be revealed as to who the 2012 ladies Saturday league champions are - watch this space next month! The ladies knock outs are just about over for this year, only the mixed knock out final still has to be played. Congratulations go to Joey du Toit for winning the ladies singles knock out final which was played last week, Anna-Marie van der Bijl is the runner up.

During the week of 10 to 13 September 2012, CCC hosted the IGT Tour event called Race To Q School. This tour is a great opportunity for all young tour players and amateurs to get a feel of a real tour event. It is the secondary tour behind the Sunshine tour. The course for the week was in great condition and the greens were nice and slick. Well done the top three players and eventual winner Hertzog Landman, winning in a playoff over Lean Boezaart on a total of 9 under par for the four rounds and with our Club Champion, Jacques Kruyswijk, one shot behind.

Seeing (really) is believing... With winter being something of the past, most golfers are on a mission to get their game ready for the summer ahead! I am going to discuss an aspect of the game that too few golfers apply when they are out on the course, and even on the range. When I mention pre-shot routine to seasoned (and some new) players the standard reply mostly is “pre-shot-what?!” To summarise: pre-shot routine is everything you do before you start your swing. I am going to discuss the most important aspects in a two part series. The first step: to make a smart decision! The

choice of your shot is relative to where the pin is and/or where you want to position yourself from the fairway after your tee shot. It is very important to ‘see’/imagine where you want the ball to go (pic below), and not where you don’t want it to go. Always choose shots that you are comfortable with as well as taking hazards and unplayable lies out of play. The selection of your aiming point needs to leave room for error. The second step: having sound fundamental (grip, stance, ball position, posture, aim and alignment) and technical reminders in your practice shot will help you not to think about a 101 things while standing over the ball. The third step: mental and physical preparation –

see and say what you want to achieve. A great example is the 8th and 9th holes at Centurion CC. If you ask most players what they predominantly see on those two holes the answer will be water, water and a little bit more water. Preparing yourself mentally, focusing more on the size of the 8th green and the two wide fairways on the 9th will take your focus away from all the trouble and re-shift it to where you want to hit the ball, and not vice versa.
