GENERAL INTEREST

Message

from Counsillor Christa Spoelstra

Dear Resident,

Irene Landowners Association(ILA). It is not fair that non-paying residents get the benefits out of the levies the ILA members pay. Once our application has been approved we will need a lot of capital to do all the necessary upgrading and we will need all contributions to ensure a safer Irene for all residents.

We are all looking forward to a lovely spring and I hope that it will be upon us soon! Since the Municipal Elections in May I have met with almost all the Homeowners Associations. I hope that we will have a good relationship and be able to deliver good results. Our Ward 65 has changed in respect of demarcations. It includes the following areas: Irene, Centurion Residential Estate, Southdowns Estate, Doringkloof, parts of Lyttelton Hoewes, Cornwall Hill, Irene Glen, Gem Village and Twin Rivers, Rietvlei Heights and plots, and the L&J Informal Settlement. Monumentpark and Pierre van Ryneveld is now part of Ward 79. I would like to bring some of our current problems and requests to your attention: Power Failures: There have been numerous power failures in the last few months. In some cases the electricity flow was insufficient; in other cases the copper cables were stolen. The areas that suffered the most from power failures were Gem Village and Doringkloof because of the copper cables that were stolen there. More failures were due to work being done to the new Power Station which is being built next to Cornwall Hill. The upgrading in our area will bring great relief in our ward and I truly hope that we will have fewer problems after the completion of this project. Irene road closure: The application for the Irene road closures should be on the agenda of the SDLT (Strategic Development Land Tribunal) very soon. This is a new committee consisting of MMC’s only (Members of the Mayoral Committee). It used to be the City Planning Committee that made decisions regarding these types of applications, but the CPC has now been replaced with the CDPC which only comprises officials. These changes have delayed the applications after the elections. The SDLT has to decide on the Irene application but has not started with these meetings as of yet. The MMC of Economic Development and Planning will keep me updated with the placing of our application. The K105 road is currently of great concern to Irene’s residents. The ILA, myself and all persons concerned will meet shortly to discuss the plans on how the K105 will connect to Olievenhoutbosch Road and Botha Avenue. There are a lot of rumors about my involvement with the project, but I can assure residents that before any decisions are made, all factors will be taken into account and considered carefully. I don’t like to comment about a matter until I have all the facts, which is why I have not given any comments to the press yet. The Olievenhoutbosch road, which is currently being built, is initially done at the expense of M&T, with the Town Council responsible for the repayment of the loan over a period of three years. I would like to call on all Irene residents to become part of the | SEPTEMBER 2011 | pg 6

Doringkloof waterpipes: Shortly after the elections I received numerous calls from Doringkloof residents about the poor water pressure or no water whatsoever. After research on the matter I found that upgrading of the water pipes would definitely have to be done. The road works in AlexandraRoad have caused many water pipes in Doringkloof to burst because of faultywater pressure. The officials have been very accommodating in that they are transferring funds from another area, thus Doringkloof has received R20 million for the first phase of upgrading the water pipes. I ask that the residents please be patient during the installing of the pipes, as it will cause some inconvenience. As I mentioned previously, Doringkloof has really suffered from cable theft, but the Town Council has brought a security company in to monitor these thefts and it has definitely improved. I would like to call on residents to get involved with the Doringkloof Residents Association. The development of 5 O’Clock site (M&T) east of the railway, affects both Irene and Doringkloof. The FODS committee has given valuable comments regarding the Doringkloofspruit that will be affected by the storm water originating from this development. We would have to look at the bridges crossing the ‘spruit’ to ensure that it will be wide enough to handle the water that will be coming down at a higher level. In my first term as councilor from 1995 to 2000, I was directly involved with the canalizing of the ‘spruit’ because of the flats that flooded. I have already had discussions with some of the engineers to take a look at it and take it into consideration on the IDP. Security areas within Ward 65: The ward has seven security areas within its borders. The areas are all run very well and I have met with the managers thereof. Of course there won’t be as many problems with security issues, but we have had quite a few incidents in the past across all spectrums because all systems are fallible. The intersection at Alexander Road and Jean Avenue would also need some attention again as residents from Centurion Estate as well as from Irene have been complaining about the noise levels and the slippery surface of the intersection. I wish you all the best and please don’t hesitate to contact me if you experience any problems regarding service delivery. Kind Regards Councilor Christa Spoelstra 082 880 5300 mwcspoel@mweb.co.za

Boodskap

Die K105 pad is tans ‘n groot bekommernis by Ireneinwoners.

CAPTAIN’S REPORT golf. The field albeit it sadly small, did include members who brought along their wives who had very limited golfing experience to participate in the spirit of the day and a great, true Quarrelsome Cup it turned out to be. Thanks guys for joining us.

Dear Golfers For the last few months the Golf Committee and the Management Committee have been researching the nature of our golf membership in earnest and the main problem that arose is the lack of new young members. The reason for this is that golfers just starting out or younger than 35 years old are enticed to join virtual clubs giving them the opportunity to play on affiliated courses of which we have opted not to be one. After looking into the problem it appears that while embarking on new careers, starting families and setting up homes, joining a club is lower on the priority list and therefore a non-obligatory, no sense of commitment virtual club at a nominal fee suits their present needs. Research proved that many wish to enjoy the benefits of Golf Club Membership such as unlimited or discounted green fees. The opportunity to enjoy reciprocity at other clubs. More opportunity to play in tournaments, league and social events with the club highlighting up and coming golf events. This encourages getting to know other members which eliminates the problem of not having a golfing partner available and becoming more familiar with your local golf professional and pro shop. We started investigating other clubs and noticed that many have offers to entice younger golfers to join their clubs. Scrutinizing our members list was startling. We have only 5 members under the age of 35 that are active at our club (this of course excludes students and Juniors). The management currently have a revised intermediate membership plan on the table and it will be for members to join from the age of 25 to 30 and a slightly increased rate for 31 to 35. After 35 they will fall in line with our normal fees. Keeping in mind that while membership fees will be less, green fees will most probably be slightly higher.

Many of the bunkers have now been completed and you will notice that the sand is very soft however we are wetting them daily and they should firm up soon. Once again it is a privilege to welcome Mr Godfrey Ntoele and the 7th Annual Telkom PGA to Centurion from 5 to 9 September. It’s always such a great opportunity when this Sunshine Tour event graces our greens and we are spoilt for great golf on our doorstep. Hope you find some time to enjoy the golf with the pros. Summer is close and after such a cold winter I cannot wait to enjoy our green fairways. With summer comes rain and since we are all one team it would be great if we could all be involved in ensuring that our course is maintained. So in wet weather stay on the paths as long as possible, fix divots and pitch marks and remember to keep up with the field. Any transgressions should be dealt with in the most gentlemanly of manner. Our Junior League team have done us incredibly proud and by the time you read this they will have played the finals against Services. We’re rooting for the guys and are happy to include a random picture of some of the boys that proudly represent the club at Junior League. Looking forward to the Invitational diarised for 23 October 2011. This promises to be a great day on a course you will not forget, so hopefully you will have confirmed your spot by now. See you on greener fairways very soon! Barry

We, as members, must understand that if we want the club to survive we have to apply a strategy to get younger members to join. The future of our club depends on depth. The fees for the ladies have also been amended and all ladies that join the club will now pay the standard fee for spouses either resident or non-resident. Hopefully this will strengthen our ladies section since we have far too few active lady members. While I may be jumping the gun, this process has been under discussion for two years already and a decision has only been reached now so I am very excited at the prospect of implementation and it is my wish that the younger members of our society embrace the opportunity and become proud members of Centurion Country Club. Nicola should have all the information in the office soon and by the end of September we hope to be inundated with applications ready to take on the summer fairways so please spread the word. The past weekend we enjoyed the Quarrelsome Cup and huge thanks to Marianne and Jannes for a great morning of foursomes | SEPTEMBER 2011 | pg 13

The facilities of the clubhouse are available according to the rules and regulations pertaining thereto. All upcoming events taking place will be advertised on the board at both main entrances to the clubhouse. Please come along, bring the family and enjoy the facilities as you are so very welcome to do. Flyers are also distributed to each and every household advertising take-away menus, Sunday lunches and food served on the patio. Spring is almost here so this is the time to come out of hibernation and enjoy a meal on the patio or the Friday night special at a very reasonable cost of R50 per adult and R30 per child. We would like to initiate special evenings for residents and invite suggestions from residents. We are working on the refurbishment of the clubhouse considering the fact that all the furniture and fittings are almost 15 years old. We intend raising money through special days and events – your interest and participation in this worthy cause would be most welcome needless to say, sponsorship could be used in the nicest way.

1st Barry and Karen Robinson

There are also a number of very talented and gifted people living on the Estate so we could start up a directory of services on offer. This directory could be sold for a nominal fee and at the same time advertise the services available on your doorstep.

BLESHOENDER On the 13th of May 2011 the Blessies took flight to the Rustenburg Golf Club for their 10th annual tour to new pastures in a quest to make small fry of a golf course in the North West Province. On arrival, after the longish flight, it was quite a sight to behold, with great excitement and expectancy the Blessies chirped and chattered over coffee, other beverages and snacks while waiting for those who used new GPS technology to find the battle ground. Divided into four colour coded flocks (Blue, Red, White and Striped), different combinations were tried over the next two days of fierce battle in an attempt to sort out the pecking order in the Blessies group. On day one “Oom” Jan as the leader of the pack, being a master in the art of creating competition, handpicked the different groups in a four ball competition format and sent them off to battle. Ken Roux, Henriette Roux, Gerrie van Vuuren and Piet Greyling were victorious in the four ball alliance while Barry Robinson and Pat Mulligan made sure they were closest to the pins on 7 and 14. Pierre Lombard took ownership of the longest shot on 18 after a marvellous put. The after battle get together was marked by laughter and groans while the Blessies discussed good and bad shots over a few drinks, naturally taking some Blessies much longer than others. This merriment was followed by a flight to the nesting area at the Orion Safari Lodge. The Blessies dinner party was marked by wine, well feathered ladies, good food and song till well into the night. Our entertainer for

RUSTENBURG TOUR No 10 the evening was also supported by some of the very talented Blessies. Pat (Darren) Mulligan re-launched “Los Lappie” in a new format of Afrikaans, Peter (Presley) Roberts with some version of Blue Suede Shoes, the Wim and Anna Skinner medley as well as Barry Robinson in various interjections. Day two started in great expectation, from some expecting to play better to some expecting to retain form. “Oom Jan in his stall-ward manner sent the Blessies off in an “each to his own format” teeing off in strict pecking order. Despite the previous evening’s jollification, Pieter Fourie managed to beat the field with Barry Robinson second, Wilma de Wet was closest to the pin on 7 and Rudy Koekemoer “Mr Cool” on 13. Anna Skinner rounded her day off with the Longest Shot on 18. Fun and laughter was had by all at the Gala Dinner. The Red flock, Willie vd Lingen, Wim Skinner, Andre Smuts, Pat Mulligan Willem de Kok, Elna Fourie and Henriette Roux, proved to be unbeatable followed by the Blue, White and Striped flocks. The overall competition was won by Jannes Sik followed by Rudy Koekemoer 2nd and Henriette Roux 3rd. Peter and Myra Roberts secured the most golf position. Insisting on watching the soccer broadcast on the big screen while the rest of the Blessies wanted to see the Rugby, earned Peter Roberts the ”Stirrer Of The Tournament” award. Andre Smuts, as the fines master, assisted by the Angel of Death (who looked very much like Jannes Sik) managed to collect a handsome sum from the naughty ones. A special thanks to Jan Schutte, Tobie Adelaar and Willie van der Lingen for once again excelled by pulling off another very successful tour.

GOBI 2011 – My Story

GENERAL INTEREST

By Dirk Cloete

“When I run, I feel HIS pleasure” What is Racing the Planet? Racing the Planet is a unique category of rough country footraces that take place over seven days and some 250 kms in remote and culturally rich locations around the world. Competitors must carry all their own equipment and food, are only provided with water and a place in a tent each day but are supported by professional medical and operations teams. Racing the Planet is International, the events typically involve competitors from over 20 different countries who are able to mingle around the campfires and in their geographically mixed tents. Currently the events consist of the 4 Deserts, a series which encompasses the Gobi Desert in China, the Atacama Desert of Chile, the Sahara Desert in Egypt and Antartica and a 5th event which roves to a new location each year. Time magazine has named the 4 Deserts challenge as the second toughest human challenge on Earth. The events get coverage on all major international as well as national TV stations, magazines, newspapers and other electronic and printed media. I’ve completed the Comrades marathon 13 times since 1998 and run more than 100 standard marathons and ultra-marathons during this period. I have also run the Washie 100-miler which I did a couple of months before my 40th birthday – a feat I wanted to do before I turned 40. In 2008 I entered the 5-Day Cape Odyssey Trail Run which spans over 220km with Heleen Joubert and this started a new era of running for me. This year I was blessed with the opportunity to take part in the 7-Day Gobi March in China. The race officially started on Sunday, 26 June 2011 and Camp 1 was just outside Gaoyachem Village. With 147 of the 150

permitted competitors lined up for the start of Stage 1, there were at least 12 potential race winners with significant pedigrees at the start line. My heart rate was between 110 and 120 bpm from the start and although this pointed to trouble I hoped that it was only nerves. Many competitors shot off at a very fast pace that day and I settled in to my own effort whilst trying not to lose touch with the front bunch. The first 2 stages to Checkpoint 1 were a steady climb of 700m over a distance of 15km and I hooked up with Juan (Jaume Tolos) of Spain, as we ran together in unspoken agreement. But I soon realised that my chest was closing up and I was lacking ‘power’. My heart rate had now escalated to between 180 and 185 bpm confirming that I was working much too hard and Exercise Induced Asthma was on my back. At Checkpoint 2 I stopped to let the doctor check me over and although my lungs were clean, the Asthma attack had caused a lack of oxygen, increasing my heart rate and slowing me down. From this point I basically walked/shuffled home for the next 20km trying to keep my heart rate at 170 bpm. I completed this 35km stage in a slow 4h34, 33 minutes behind the leader and in 6th position. I started the 2nd day off slowly again as I struggled to keep my heart rate down but about an hour into the race it started raining and at that time I felt how my chest was opening up and I started to run more competitively. By day 3 my Asthma was gone and I was running relaxed managing a fast race over the technical terrain of this stage. But another obstacle stood in my way and at 42km into the race that day I realised I was lost which added an extra hour to my time and left me finishing in 16th position,

slipping back to 8th overall and leaving me completely dehydrated from spending the extra hour in the sun without water. Before the start of day 4 I decided to try and enjoy my run after the challenges of the first 3 days. Just 2 hours into this stage, the desert sun became ruthless and I used my previous experience of being in the dessert under these conditions to strike a balance between not wasting time and recuperating for a while when needed. My strategy worked and just before Checkpoint 3 I could see all 4 of the leading competitors ahead of me in the distance. Within 3km I had caught 3 of the guys in front of me and managed to finish this 37km stage in 2nd place. Stage 5 was the longest stage – 81.6km. The weather was kind to us for the first part of that day and I ran the first 41km to Checkpoint 4 trailing the leader by 3 minutes. But the next few stages proved to be challenging, leaving us literally stumbling from one step to the next and the intense desert sun was taking its toll. This stretch took 10h47 to complete. Although the last day was a short run of just 14km the desert was not finished with us yet. Only 112 of the original 147 competitors lined up for the final stage. I managed a good run that day and finished 1 minute behind the winner. Completing an event like this is not just about successfully finishing a race, it’s an epic journey which lasts for months and culminates in 7 final days where you push your body and mind beyond all limits. I thank my sponsors, friends and family for giving me the strength and encouragement to complete this race. I felt proudly South African amongst competitors from all over the world. | SEPTEMBER 2011 | pg 23
