LIVING IN
Peace
O
ur walks through the village these past few weeks have been met with some very chilly mornings and the lovely sound of crunching leaves beneath our feet. The Autumn colours are spectacular and there are many streets in our little village that could quite possibly be some of the most beautiful streets in South Africa.
on the continued progress of this project. If you would like to help in any way, please give Luisa a call as she would love to hear from you.
Many of our fellow villagers take great pride in their gardens, sidewalks included, and it shows. Neighbours have started covering their delicate plants for the anticipation of frost in the coming weeks and some verges are boasting the most beautiful roses. It’s lovely to see a community go to great lengths to enhance the village but of course, it doesn’t go without some shame!
‘Till next month Tracey
I receive many letters each month with complaints of pet owners walking their dogs and not picking up after them. Please bear in mind that we are extremely fortunate to be able to walk our pets in such a lovely environment where people have put care and effort into making it what it is. A poop scoop would go a long way towards ensuring a poop free pavement. It’s always great to receive news on various organisations/groups and volunteers working towards improving our village for the better so the article placed in this issue on the Lions Club clean up was one we were pleased to feature. There are many residents within our village who give up much of their time to help those around them. You may remember our article on the opening of the Irene Middle School library last year – in this issue Luisa Wood has given us an update

You’ll notice a whole new look and feel from this issue which I believe will go a long way towards enhancing our magazine – hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

YOU SAID IT
D
ear Editor
Gosh if it’s not one thing it’s another… both good and bad, but of late the bad, bad, bad wicked people in and around Irene. Some actually don’t even live in the village but are rotten to the core by their actions.
Who’s killing the hadedas? Yes, found dead in Irene, with pellet shot wounds, plus one with a leg shot off. Shameful. Who’s tipping their rubbish in the open veld on Irene Village borders? Who’s actually taking their dog/s for a walk on The Oval with the specific intention of letting them ‘crap’ (and I make no excuses for my language, because you are causing said frigging c-- -, there is no polite way of saying it! ) on the grass of The Oval? You are not too keen to actually be a conscientious dog lover. You are witnessed as being a miserable, unsmiling, non-communicative and generally sour person. The only excuse anyone has is the very elderly and their equally ageing, beloved pet. They cannot bend and pick up the poo. In those instances, the kinder persons of the village pick up after their doggies. No problem. The most wonderful thing about The Oval in these present times is that is becoming a true community spirited meeting place and its lovely. On any night you will see dogs socialising with glee, walkers stopping to chat, runners and exercise parties in bright, healthy colours, elderly perambulating, mothers with babies and children
Irene Town Crier | May Issue 2015
playing and/or on blankets enjoying a picnic or sharing conversations with other mums, all manner of ball games, teenagers for the most part enjoying The Oval with their friends, young people chatting, oh one could wax lyrical for another couple of lines. But I won’t use your imagination and keep the bloody Oval clean of dog poo, bottles and bad influences. Who’s ramming our expensive, necessary, work most the time, gates? Possibly not paying the bill for any damage caused. If these gates are not working fast enough for you, or are for a while inoperable (check your cell phone because if you are an ILA member, you will have received a message), check it’s not the irate persons actual phone itself? This is directed at you irate personage. Also, if there is a queue at the gate and/or it is not operating at the time, and you start hooting and fuming at the gills, get out your car, kick one of your vehicle’s wheels, walk in a clockwise direction around said vehicle then again anti-clockwise, realise how stupid you look, laugh and resume back to being a normal, healthy, accepting life’s quirks individual and continue your day with great gusto and mirth. We won’t even go into how many ridiculous calls, messages etc the ILA receive because you need to vent your spleen, so why not take it out on the gates? Darn silly isn’t it? Mishaps happen. And what is more, we need our gates - they are performing equally well as your own gates. They break down as many times as your own, does one need to even add the ubiquitous “relatively speaking”? Do we need to name and shame some of the despicable behaviour? Maybe. Think about it?

PANCAKES,
PANCAKES,
2
0 years after our daughter was admitted to Irene Homes, we’re still making pancakes for the Annual Irene Homes Fete (ably assisted by a team of volunteers). Many people over the years have asked us for the bulk pancake recipe and how many pancakes it makes; we’ve always been unsure, so this year we noted exactly how much and how many. Here then are the amounts:
Recipe for 1 220 pancakes 35 kgs flour 10 litres sunflower oil 275 ml vinegar 18 doz jumbo eggs 500g salt 4 x 2,5 kg pkts sugar
P
lease help to keep our guards warm this winter. The nights are very cold now! We would appreciate any donations of tea, coffee, hot chocolate, creamer and sugar. Knorr Cup o’ Soup, rusks and cookies will also be most welcome. Your donations may be delivered to Jan or Dawie, at the Oval. Thank you The ILA Team and EBS Management
Pancakes
1 box (catering size) cinnamon 200g baking powder 12 sm pkts Holsum fat (for pan greasing) Mix in batches comprising 4 cups water, ¼ cup vinegar, ½ cup oil, 4 cups flour, 4 eggs, 2 tsp salt and plenty of elbow grease when stirring. Add 1½ tsp baking powder to each batch the morning of the fete (this thickens the mixture) and then water the mixture down to the correct consistency just before ladling into the greased frying pan. It amazes us that several customers grumble at the cost of R5 per pancake, but consider: 150 paper plates (for multi-pancake orders), 275 sheets (65cm x 42cm) greaseproof paper each cut into 8 pieces (which a printer charges R60 to guillotine), massive amounts of gas for cooking, a box of rubber gloves for the wrappers, serviettes, replacement cost of new pans, utensils, plastic tablecloths, cooker tops, sugar shakers, etc. added to the cost of ingredients and you are already in excess of R1 100 in costs… Also bear in mind that a minimum of 12 people work for 5 or 6 hrs in the hot sun AND that it is a 3-day labour – the batter-making and assembling of utensils the day before, and a full day of cleaning and packing the day afterwards… so R5 for a lovingly made pancake is pretty good value! Special thanks to all those people who bought our pancakes at this years fete – we enjoyed making them and adding to the success of a wonderful fete for Irene Homes! Cilla and Lionel Taylor

DEAR
IRENE RESIDENTS &
ILA Members
T
he Annual ILA AGM, held on 13 May 2015, was a successful event with an attendance of 59 members – 14 less than last year and 67 less than the year before which is a little disappointing but is hopefully an indication that our security is working and that our membership has fewer concerns than the previous years. That said, there is no room for complacency as there is still much to be done in addition to the compulsory re-application for closure every two years. Indeed, we have already identified several projects for this year. There is a lot to do and we need volunteers to be involved to retain the momentum gained over the past few years. It is interesting to note the shift in the dynamics within the village with the influx of growing young families. This welcome addition to the village however was not represented at the recent AGM with a glaring lack of attendance by those in the under 50year old category. Irene has always been a community driven village and the call for engagement is being made to attract the younger members to carry the torch and be involved in taking Irene forward. If you would like to be involved in any capacity, please email your details to ilamanager@irene.co.za with a subject line: Volunteering.
Irene Town Crier | May Issue 2015
Communication It’s difficult to identify a member by only an email address and as such we would ask our membership to please always provide their full name, address and cellphone number in addition to making use of the subject line when communicating by email. Many emails received in reply to a bulk communiquÊ make timeous response difficult. Signage and house numbers Once again, we would ask our membership to ensure that they have an ILA sign and that it is mounted on the wall close to your main entrance or on the gate itself. If signage is missing, please contact Alyson or Jan. Houses without numbers are very difficult to service when responding in an emergency. Please ensure that your home is easy to identify with a clearly visible number that is visible by day and night. Potholes Please report potholes by emailing pothole@ tshwane.gov.za with a copy to Alyson ilamanager@irene.co.za and DA Ward Councilor Christa Spoelstra mwcspoel@ mweb.co.za.

Recycling Should anyone be aware of any free recycling points for tin or plastic, please advise Alyson. On-site staff: Domestic workers and gardening staff Please ensure that you have communicated your domestic and gardening staff details to Alyson (I.D. number, cell phone number and day/s of employment). EBS Security needs this information when an alarm goes off to ensure that the individuals on the property are authorised to be there. On-site staff: Builders and contractors Also, please remember that it is important to let Jan know of any builders working on your property. Please provide their names, copies of I.D. documents or work permits, as well as contact details of the contractor, for your and your home’s safety. Should you not currently be a member and would like to contribute toward the on-going security of our village, please contact Jan or Alyson at the numbers above. Your support is welcomed and greatly appreciated.
We hope that you enjoy the change of season as our village presents a new, more stark and very beautiful face to our villagers. Your ILA

LIONS CLUB
CENTURION CLEANS UP
O
area in Irene
On Saturday, 11 April 2015, 10 people from the Lions Club of Centurion together with 13 of the Sytze Wierda Voortrekkers (varying from ages 7 to 15) took it upon themselves to focus on cleaning up the area around Nellmapius and Main Streets in Irene as well as the Irene train station. This year Lions around the world have been encouraged to participate in various Global Service Action Campaigns, one of which is awareness of protecting the environment. The walkway under the train track on Nellmapius Street has already been beautified by a project in conjunction with Irene residents, the City Council and Councillor Christa Spoelstra where they had dustbins placed and the walls painted
Irene Town Crier | May Issue 2015
with bright and cheerful murals. The idea to further her intention to improve the environment was extended into a clean-up project by the Lions Club of Centurion. The Lions and the Voortrekk ers got together to pick up litter with protective gloves while placing it in municipal refuse bags that would be collected by the municipality. Full of energy and enthusiasm, the two groups were at the area outside the Irene train station cleaning when hawkers and other members of the community asked for refuse bags in order to help clean up the area - they also began to sweep the pavement out of their own with pride. Once the clean-up project was completed, the pavement on Main Street was so clean and beautiful, lined with tall trees and layered with grey stones with not a bit of litter in sight.

IRENE MIDDLE FARM SCHOOL COMMUNITY PROJECT - LIBRARY
A
group of volunteers worked hard for two and a half years before the library at the Irene Middle Farm School officially opened in September last year. In the last eight months we have achieved a lot. Thanks to the generosity of many amazing people, we now have about 5 000 beautiful books in the library. We have colouring-in books, puzzles and games. A good carpet and a few little plastic tables and chairs have been donated. We keep making the library as beautiful as possible so that the children want to be there. We have a small but committed group of volunteers who help the many children who come to the library during their long break from Monday to Friday. The children love coming to the library. As soon as the break bell goes, they come running to the library with big smiles on their faces. It is difficult to get many of them out of the library when their 30 minute break period is over. Some learners write stories at home and bring them to the library for correction of their English grammar. The progress the children are making is just amazing! They follow the library rules and are eager to do the right thing. The teachers are continuously commenting on how positively the children keep talking about the library.
We need your help We still need lots more volunteers to help with the reading between 12:00 noon to 12:30 and we spend an extra fifteen minutes or so tidying the library afterwards. That is 45 minutes of your time once a week if you wish to only go in once a week, but you are very welcome to give 45 minutes more than one day a week, or every day if you wish! If you would like to donate money, we would be very grateful. The money mostly gets used to buy cards, labels, laminated tape and sticky tape from a library supplier for the new books that we are continuously receiving. These library items are very expensive. Other requirements at present that you may want to donate are: Pencil sharpeners and pencils; punch; laminating machine; guillotine; heaters for Winter; fan for Summer; little plastic tables in different colours (Game R129); little plastic chairs (no armrests) in different colours (Game R55, Plastic Land R50); a flip chart stand; flip charts and markers; a good globe of the world; an updated atlas/s of the world; fiction and non-fiction books for children (in good condition). If you would like to help us, please contact Luisa Wood on 012 667 5390 or 082 491 4959. May Issue 2015 | Irene Town Crier
