LIVING IN
Peace
T
he early morning calls of spring are finally here. I have been eagerly watching the birds returning to their nests in our garden and building new ones for the arrival of their offspring. Warmer and longer days are promising that this spring is going to transform our village into the beautiful surrounds that we all so enjoy… Our front cover is proof of this – whilst the grass is still dry, the flowers are starting to bloom. And this year there are many new families in our village that will get to enjoy this time of year for the first time too. More and more young families are seeking homes in Irene – a testament to our lovely village – and we welcome them. As such, we put together a page of some of the social clubs in our village which will hopefully help should you be wishing to become an active member of our community. We’ve also included an article on the benefits of playing games with our kids. We are so fortunate to live in a village where our gardens are big enough to play backyard soccer or cricket, our kids can climb our lovely big trees and find places to build their forts. Take advantage of the space we have and encourage your kids to play outside. There aren’t many places left where they can ride their bikes on the street (under your supervision, of course) or take the dogs for a walk. Irene Town Crier | August Issue 2015
Some fun events will keep the family entertained in September. Irene Primary School welcomes everyone to their Carnival on Saturday, 5 September 2015. It will be on the whole day and apart from the rides, which the kids will love, they have market and food stalls too. Come along to support our local school, it’s a beautiful school and you will be surprised at all it has to offer. Another event you won’t want to miss is the St Martin’s church annual Cultural Jamboree on Saturday, 26 September 2015. With numerous other markets happening as the weather warms up and we speed towards the end of another year, make sure you keep your weekends open and diarise the ones you simply have to go to. Of course, for the rugby fans in our village, the World Cup starts in a few weeks so we will expect to see some South African flags flying high! We hope our team fairs better than expected and we look forward to the spirit such a great sporting event brings. If you wish to venture out of our side of town, we’ve included an article on the Antique Route through Pretoria North. It’s a fun day out for the whole family. ‘Till next month

THE GAMES
Children play
As we all know, with today’s fast paced, technology focused world of TV, Internet, computer games and hand held video games (to name but a few), our kids are asking for gadgets before they can even talk!
I
often receive emails referring to the ‘good old days’ when we had no TV, no contact other than a Telkom telephone and when we were bored at home the standard instruction was to “go outside and play”. Although the ‘old days’ are outdated and I remember sighing whenever my parents would lecture me on how lucky I was as a child as they didn’t have half the options available to them as kids as we had, now being a parent myself, I have to wonder if my kids are at a disadvantage with today’s technology as opposed to being at an advantage? Given the chance, most children love to play outside. Climb trees, ride bikes and chase after each other but, unfortunately, in today’s society with so many of us working long hours and with our gardens becoming smaller, they don’t really get the opportunity to just be kids. We, as parents, need to make an effort to ensure that our kids get the time needed to just play – no matter what the game is. Playing games is an important activity for their social and mental development not to mention learning about teamwork, sportsmanship and fairness. Games can create courage, inspire your child to prove himself, teaches him to make quick decisions
Irene Town Crier | August Issue 2015
and how to work well under pressure. So whilst we may think that playing hide and seek for the 100th time is just silly, our kids are learning vital skills which we may not even realise. It’s time to think back to your childhood and get your kids to play the games that we used to play out in the back yard. Physical games such as hopscotch, followmy-leader, and hide and seek all improve on personal and social development for example, working with others and taking turns. These games also improve muscle development and co-ordination. Party games such as pass the parcel and musical statues teach our kids how to be part of a group and, again, taking turns. Their creative development is stimulated by their movement to music which in turn develops strong muscles and hand-eye coordination skills. Board games such as snap, scrabble and monopoly improve on mathematics as your child is counting, matching and sorting. Language and literacy is improved through communication with others and perhaps even learning new vocabulary. Once you and your child have decided on a game to play, allow your child some freedom under your supervision so that he can learn what his limits and the outcomes of his actions are. Ensure that the rules and boundaries of the game are explained so that he understands how the game works from the start.
9
So, I challenge you to take some time out once a week, get out into the garden or park with your child and teach them a ‘good old days’ game. They will benefit from the many advantages simple childhood games have to offer and they will love the interaction they have with you.
Let’s play...

O
DEAR IRENE RESIDENTS & ILA MEMBERS
ur members will have received the most recent ILA Security Report. Being informed about the movements of criminals in and around our Village is an invaluable insight into ensuring that your own behaviour does not expose you to falling victim to the same type of approach, so we encourage our membership to keep up to date with the information circulated in this regard. Membership New residents to Irene are encouraged to support the security initiative that makes Irene an attractive place to live and raise families. We have found that our membership becomes eroded when existing ILA members sell their homes to new residents who either do not sign up to support the Village security or who indicate a willingness but then take months to actually come on board. Please remember that the ILA needs the support of ALL non-members to maintain our current security infrastructure. Without the community support, our village will become more prone to crime. Keep your family and Irene secure – join the ILA and make a difference. The more members we have, the more we can do! Membership in the Village stands at 78%, which is good, Irene Town Crier | August Issue 2015
but we venture to say, not good enough. For membership information call: ILA - Jan Swanepoel: 083 607 6600 ILA - Alyson Lea-Cox: 072 714 3740 Security As with all business related engagements, the interaction and management of our security staff via EBS Security follows a strict and very efficient protocol. Should you witness or experience any inappropriate action by a security official within the Village, we request that you not confront the officer directly but rather report the incident to EBS (Dawie: 071 476 4110) or our Village Manager – Jan Swanepoel – immediately and the appropriate action will be taken. Communal areas On several occasions it has been observed and complaints have been received that youngsters are driving around the Oval for several laps on small and very noisy off-road motorbikes! On being approached by security personnel the behaviour did not cease. We appeal to our residents to take children to an offroad venue where they can ride to their heart’s content, without disturbing their neighbours and fellow residents.
13 In addition to this, we have received reports that young children are playing in the streets, overturning bins and ringing intercoms late at night, especially around the Oval. GrafďŹ ti is another addition to the area (see the picture below). We are pleased that our efforts in the Village make children feel safe enough to be out at night but would ask that parents please warn their children against this kind of unsavoury behaviour.
Speeding cars and man’s best friend This is an issue that we have raised on numerous occasions. In a short space of time we have sadly had two dogs killed in the Village! It is not always possible to see a small dog that darts into the road but driving more slowly will enable you to hopefully avoid it. We are aware that dogs should be kept secure inside a property, but no one can guarantee that a dog will not escape. To those who allow their dogs out in the street to exercise and smell the roses, please keep your dogs inside to avoid the inevitable! Should you accidentally knock down a cat or a dog, please take it to Lakeside Clinic, 97 Jean Avenue, where Ina will provide emergency treatment and check if there is a chip or not - at no charge to you. She will also keep the animal overnight until the owner is found. Please inform Jan or Alyson and they will send out an email to the community.
CONTINUES ON NEXT PAGE >>> August Issue 2015 | Irene Town Crier
14 TrafďŹ c circles Near misses abound in Irene, as so many motorists continue to negotiate our circles the wrong way. Please set an example, especially to our young - it is NOT COOL to disobey the rules of the road. Cutting in front of oncoming trafďŹ c at a circle can cause accidents - even more so when using a cell phone! Maintenance of Electric Fence We have a contractor that maintains the perimeter electric fence, on a weekly basis. They can only clear brush and branches that are within their reach, on the outside of the fence. We would appeal to our perimeter residents to please check on overhanging branches etc and assist us by pruning inside their boundary wall. Once again, thank you to all of our loyal members who enable us to continue to work toward a crime free Village. Stay safe Your ILA

LITTLE OAK MONTESSORI PRE-SCHOOL - PROUDLY SINCE 1999
A
s parents, the most valuable things that you have, are your children. You want to give your children the best in life, and that includes schooling. Little Oak Montessori school share that vision that you have for your children. In the heart of the beautiful Irene, is Little Oak. A hidden gem at 5 the Oval. Our aim is to create a home away from home where children can learn, play and develop themselves as individuals, with passionate teachers to guide them. We have been part of the Irene community and many children’s lives since 1985, first as Busy Bees playschool, then Village Montessori for a few years and then as Little Oak Montessori since 1999. Montessori education is a child centred, individualized approach that allows children to reach their potential and meet their developmental needs through using real, everyday objects. It is a holistic approach, stimulating and developing all the aspects of the child – physical, intellectual, language, emotional and social. Children are encouraged and work at their own pace, using their strengths and interests as a starting point. Little Oak proudly follows the Montessori Method of education and helps children create the best version of themselves. We make use of a ‘favourable environment’, prepared for the needs of the learning child. Through ‘vertical grouping’ children of different age groups can learn from one another and be an example for other children, forming a community of children. Our classes are small, with 12 children per adult in the pre-school, and 8 per adult in the Toddler unit. The teachers are all
Montessori trained with combined experience of 50 years. These teachers are keen facilitators who observe the children in order to prepare relevant and interesting activities, keeping the child’s developmental levels and interest in mind. Dr Montessori called the hand ‘the instrument of the mind’. Through the attractive materials the children are encouraged to manipulate them and absorb information, gaining a concrete experience of abstract ideas through concentration. Montessori called this ‘materialised abstraction’. Through this the child not only gain information and a love for learning, but is creating his/her mind. Through all of this, the child has a huge advantage when facing abstract work in the primary and high school, as s/he has already had concrete experiences to utilise. Drawing on concrete experiences to understand abstract ideas make learning much easier and a smooth process. Children are given the tools and skills to be independent, self-motivated, self-disciplined, self-confident and well-balanced. The children that have attended our school are adaptable and well prepared for life, with a love for learning which will greatly benefit their future learning experiences. We are very proud of all our past pupils and what they have achieved in school as well as in their personal lives. For more information and parent references, please visit our website www.littleoak.co.za or contact us on 012 667 2426, littleoak@ vodamail.co.za. Applications are open for 2016. Alluring Marico ghosts, countless bottles of mampoer and elusive romances – both funny and enthralling - this is undoubtedly South African storytelling at its best! Herman Charles Bosman’s hilarious stories are brought to life by the comical veld maiden herself – Barbie Meyer. Herman Charles Bosman (1905-1951) was

a South African writer and journalist who became famous for capturing the rhythms of backveld Afrikaans speech even though he wrote in English. He is widely regarded as the greatest short story writer to come out of this country. His books are some of the finest in the field of South-African literature. This is Meyer’s 5th show on Herman Charles Bosman’s work and as with her previous shows; she has been able to bring to life a balanced and highly palatable assortment of this famous author’s short stories, essays and poetry. Tasty titbits about Bosman’s Bohemian and rather controversial life have been woven into the work and the show is suitable for all ages. So expect comical and witty storytelling through the mouth of an attractive blonde khaki boer as well as through the eyes of a veld maiden. A little romantic, a tad sensual but of course touched with Bosman’s unmistakable twists in the tail… and tales!
