Winter is certainly creeping up on us. As I write this the wind is howling outside and my gardener is collecting a driveway full of leaves that were cleared just a few days ago! The mornings are dark, the kids are battling to get out of bed and when my toddler takes his afternoon nap I’m tempted to curl up next to him! Time to stock up on the fire wood, get the blankets out and enjoy the warmth of the midday sun whenever we can. I hope you enjoy reading through this issue as much as I have enjoyed putting it together. With the aim of creating more village interaction, I was so pleased to receive so many letters this month - from concerned residents, to births, a spider survey and the celebration of 80th Birthdays, Irene certainly is a busy little village. Requests have been made for me to continue Arlene’s tradition and include articles on various residents of the village again. I have a few individuals in mind whom I will interview for the upcoming issues but if you have anyone you would like me to approach or if you yourself would like to take part in a ‘Get to know your neighbour’ exercise, then please contact me on info@tlgpublishing.co.za. It’s holiday time again and April always seems to pass me by in a flash. I can’t keep up with all the days off but I have so enjoyed welcoming family and friends who have stayed with us during this time to our wonderful suburb. And Irene never dissappoints - our guests always leave feeling like they have had a good rest. How blessed we are to live here. ‘Till next month

Thank you A big thank you to the lady who rescued our dog, Yoda, at the end of Krige Lane last month. We were out for a couple of hours and didn’t know she was missing until we got a call from security when we got back home. Thanks to the guard as well. Even though Yoda is an old dog she is very wily and somehow managed to slip out the gate. She is deaf and I don’t think she would have lasted long in traffic. Thank you again to our two good samaritans. We really do appreciate the trouble you went to. With grateful thanks Harry and Nancy Bingham
Dear Jan, Dawie and CPF A word of sincere thanks for the quick response and great service we experienced from Dawie, the EBS manager in Irene. On the morning of 7 April we discovered that one of the wheels of an outdoor trailer parked on our property was taken. It was a surprising target for the opportunistic night visitors we have had before on

our premises. After reporting it to Irene CPF, Irene Village Manager and EBS Irene Manager, Dawie from EBS was on the scene within 5 minutes. He did some quick investigation and organised SAPS to come to our place to open a case of theft. Great was our surprise when Jan and Dawie pitched up at our front door with the missing tyre a few days later. The individual that took it had difficulty smuggling the heavy tyre out of Irene and didn’t manage to get it out through the perimeter fence on Botha Avenue. It was left in the garden of a perimeter property, discovered by the owners who then notified EBS. This case is a testimony to the winning formula I believe we have in Irene of close cooperation between the Village community, CPF and the security service provider. We wish to extend a warm word of thanks to Dawie and others committed to fighting crime in Irene. We also applaud the efforts of the CPF in promoting community involvement and awareness. Because we should have zero tolerance for crime in Irene, even something as simple as a trailer tyre! Regards Wim and Jean van Schalkwyk
Residents in community: Friend or Foe?
caused the widespread fly problem of this past summer.
I was very saddened to read “A shameful time for our village” in last month’s issue. In every family, community, village, school, office, department, etc, there are one or more who are self-centered and controlling, to the detriment of all around them. The nuns at school called them “the rotten apples – they spoil everything around them”. Sadly for themselves and the communities they live/work in, these people don’t know the value of positive interaction rather than negative and aggressive reaction.
I wonder why the writer of “A shameful time for our village” felt it was not possible to put their name to the letter?
In respect of the number of flies we had this summer, we did have exceptional rains and this definitely played a role. Irene Dairy Farm takes exceptional measures to reduce the flies and have always done so. Their animals are important to them and limiting the flies contributes to the health of the animals. Also the success of their restaurants would be negatively impacted if the flies were not controlled. In the summer of 2004/2005 we had excessive flies, probably the worst I can remember and it was caused by circumstances at ARC. The problem was so bad even homes in Doringkloof were affected. This summer has not been as bad but certainly was worse than usual. Certainly a couple of animals on an open stand in Irene would not have
Anonymous correspondence makes me feel nervous about putting my thoughts on paper, am I “leaping in, where Angels fear to tread”? If I had known the names involved would I have risked this letter? Maybe… maybe not! Courage in hand, the following are my thoughts: • With regard to the controversy surrounding the issue, my personal opinion is that only action will result in some sort of positive resolution. • A threat to poison or destroy the property of another is a criminal offence. If the threat was made anonymously then a police investigation of telephone records will reveal the caller’s identity even if the call was made from a “private” number. • I wonder why no names are mentioned? In South Africa our law allows one to publish details, including names, provided they are true and/or in the public interest. Every pet owner in Irene has a right to be warned of residents who are prepared to poison their neighbour’s pets.
• I would not hesitate to make an official complaint/criminal charge to the police. Imagine the message to all should the person who made a death threat be dealt a criminal record. A great example to any others who feel they have a right to employ similar tactics and deny others their rights. • If Irene residents, who feel strongly about this are willing to make a joint and public statement, addressed openly, by name, to the protagonists, in the Town Crier and on the village Facebook page it would be meaningful support for the family on whose behalf we feel outrage.
• The protagonists then have a choice to respond/react to the feeling of the community or not as they choose. • The protagonists might find the residents of Irene are worse than the summer flies! • It is easy to talk, but action… do we care enough? I do wish that if this saga is the only reason for leaving Irene, Ina and her family would reconsider as they are well loved and would be surprised at the amount of support they have from many Irene residents. Helen Lachenicht.
To all the Irene Library clients It is with a heavy heart that I must bid you all farewell . I have been part of your community for six years now and every day has been an absolute pleasure to assist you. I have been offered the position as head of the Rooihuiskraal library and it is an opportunity that I cannot pass up. I leave this library in Justice Baloyi’s very capable hands, knowing that he will continue to take very good care of you. I wish to thank you all for making each and every moment in this wonderful library a positive one and for helping me to gain the experience to be the librarian that I am today, I could not have done it without you. Gratefully yours, Kathryn

Dear Residents and ILA Members
There has been substantial activity around Nelmapius Road, improving the functionality and the appearance of the subway. Our local council, with the help of Councillor Christa Spoelstra and a few local residents, have been and will continue to focus on this project until the subway represents a beautiful welcome to our village. Our sincere thanks to all involved to date as the clearing of the drainage and the addition of the paving makes a daily difference to all who commute in that direction. Should anyone want to make a donation toward the community project and upkeep of the subway or want information on the plans, please contact Heather on 083 4988 777. Security The trend in criminal activity has shifted from theft out of vehicles to theft from houses and outbuildings. Four incidents were reported from 28 February to 24 April. All incidents occurred inside the village with laptops being the core focus. There is evidence that two different individuals or groups committed the crimes with access being gained via unlocked doors or through open windows. We remind our residents to please be aware of valuables being accessible in this way and being vigilant on their own properties.
13
The response time from EBS, within minutes of one particular incident and immediate lock down of the village, would indicate that the perpetrators either live in the southern part of the village or associate with someone who does. Once again we would ask all residents to consider who they have living on their properties whether permanently living in or newly occupying the property or visitors to tenants etc. No one likes to believe that someone they know and trust could be involved in crime but we need to be cognisant that it unfortunately sometimes is the case.
We urge residents to report all incidents, however trivial they might seem. This will enable us to link these incidents with other crimes committed elsewhere in the village. False alarm signals We currently experience 500 false alarms per month, many of which are panic alarms. This is a substantial waste of resources and we appeal to our membership to please immediately call the EBS Control Room at the number below to cancel false panic signals. Closure update We are most pleased to advise that zoning of the perimeter electric fence is complete. Two communicators have been installed that will enable the EBS Control Room to be advised of a break in the fence. This will further enhance our ability to react speedily when necessary. Membership Our services are only delivered due to our membership’s support. Should you not currently be a member and would like to contribute toward the on-going security of your village, please contact Jan or Alyson and join your neighbours in securing the village. Reminder of our emergency contact numbers: EBS Control Room – 012 667 6337 or 071 576 5904 Irene Village Manager (Jan Swanepoel) - 083 607 6600 / jan.swanepoel@ila.co.za ILA Administration (Alyson Lea-Cox) - 072 714 3740 / ilamanager@ila.co.za
14 We also encourage our membership to attend our ILA Committee meetings and where possible offer assistance by volunteering on the committee. The ILA is a community initiative and all input is welcome. For meeting dates and times please contact Alyson at the number above. Street lights Darkness provides the cover criminals need and in a suburb like ours we need all of our street lights operational. Residents are requested to report faulty street lights directly to Council. Email: streetlights@tshwane.gov.za or tel: 012 358 9999. The following information is required: • Your name and telephone number • Suburb • Street • Pole number • Nearest corner to faulty light(s). Residents are asked to please follow up with Council but if after two weeks the lights are still faulty, please forward your mail to Alyson with your reference number and she will follow up. Speeding Speeding remains an issue in our village and we have for many years appealed to our residents to please observe the speed limit of 30km/h in order to ensure the safety of our children, pedestrians, runners, cyclists and pets. It has been noted that the speedsters in our village are not only non-residents which makes the issue a sensitive one. As we all live in a community that seeks a quiet and quality village life, we ask that everyone not only slow down but also highlight the problem with visitors, driving family members and staff to ensure that our roads remain a safe place for all. Kind wishes

Spring Garden Competition winner Congratulations to the Maynier family of 3 Queen Street who recently won our Spring Garden Competition. Their prize included a Voucher from Plantland where they can go and buy some more plants or garden equipment and also a Spur voucher so that the family can go and celebrate their hard work with a nice meal! This was really a hard decision to make, since Irene residents all have such beautiful gardens.

Dear Irene I was again reminded about our failure as humans to take ownership of what we have been given to protect and look after. Driving over the Hennops this morning was a stark reminder for me that I need to get more involved in the solution to this problem. I would like to know if there are any other Irene members who feel the same and also don’t really know how they could contribute in finding a solution to rectify the destruction and pollution of our rivers. I would like to see if we could find some old pictures of what the river looked like 20-30 years ago. I believe people in this area where fishing and swimming in it? At this stage it is unthinkable. What is it going to look like in 5 years time? I think it is time to start an action campaign to if can mobilize decision makers to assist in rectifying the problem. Pictures taken 08h15 on 14 April 2014. Kind regards, Concerned Irene resident.

Where oh where has our pretty bird gone? Each time I have sat down to write this particular story, I have burst into floods of tears. Some might say, “pathetic” but we have such an affinity with this little guy and his ‘wife’, offspring and many antics. Look closely and you will see only one claw (his left). The other (the right) we saw hanging by a thread about 3 or 4 years after he entered Irene Village itself. We would often see him at Smuts Koppie from the 1990’s onwards, but then in about 2005 he started coming into the village more and more. Shortly thereafter followed by his female. So it was in August 2009 that we were woken, as we were almost daily, by his or her tap tapping on our bedroom windows - only to find him in this agonising state. We duly humanised him even more by naming him Pegleg (because I so wanted to take him to a vet and ask them to mend him thus). He struggled with it hanging, drying out over weeks before falling off. As time went by he showed us and we marvelled like two proud parents, at his ability to not only manage bravely, but also start raising a family of one or two juveniles every year. He managed valiantly on his stump. Remarkable, brave and determined all these years. And bear in mind, that when his female goes off from the start, to lay her eggs and then stay with the youngsters for a good 2 months, he has to feed her and then them for all that time. You see, she goes into her nest (a hollow trunk) and sheds all her feathers for nursery comfort and she seals herself in with mud leaving a little slit for feeding. This he has done annually around Christmas each year since that 2009. Well in Irene Village anyways, before that he was elsewhere. Now for the crunch part of this letter - he is no more coming to our ‘smorgasbord’ of bird delicacies. In fact he has not since about early February. Every time we hear her plaintive cry we rush out, give her extra food, hoping, hoping, hoping, for his wayward return. So far it is not to be! You will see from the few photos featured here, that he is quite a character. Perhaps we have habituated him to his disadvantage and perhaps someone has caught him. At our home here in Arnold Road, should the 1/2 coconut shell be empty of food, he would firstly come and perch on our front doors. Then if we still had not noticed him, fly his way onto a chair, coming all the way into the kitchen or dining chairs, the coffee table or our central light as you can see on the photos. In a way I am hoping that if a person has ‘caught’ him, perhaps
21
thinking he was maimed and couldn’t manage, I can appeal to him/her/them to please let him loose once again - this is the best of the worst scenarios.
The natural course of nature is that he could have been old and gone to his feathered heaven; or our annual visit by the Western Morph of the Forest Buzzard (as identified by Dr Gerhard Verdoorn) has finally nabbed him. The past two autumns we have actually chased the Forest Buzzard away as it bore down on our hapless one-legged Grey Hornbill when in our vicinity. Who knows what could happen to him elsewhere. We have recently been spotting this Forest Buzzard for about two weeks or more now, so who knows. But if anyone has any news of our/Irene’s Male Hornbill, it would be lovely to read about him and keep his memory alive, as he will always be inand ourCraig minds, Tim Donkin Herbst hearts and photo album, along with all our animal and avifauna friends. With love Ros Male Grey Hornbill’s have the large ‘trumpeter horn’ and are actually a larger bird than their female counterparts, who have a smaller bill and also faintly red tipped. They both have the yellow section midway. Juveniles have a shorter and very black bill until about 6 months old.
Congratulations Colleen and Val

had much to celebrate at our February meeting this year. Not only did we enjoy a morning in the garden but we also celebrated the 80th Birthdays of Colleen Newton (Chairperson) and Val Greef. They were born on the same day in the same maternity ward and have known each other ever since. They were both Irene residents until a few years ago.

Spider survey of Irene – Nov 2014
As time marches on, Irene, which was once a small rural village in the veld between Pretoria and Johannesburg, is losing that country feel as more and more large developments appear on the skyline over our boundary fences. Good or bad, with development comes work, people, traffic and pollution. For the nature lover the saddest of all is the loss of pristine grasslands that surround us. Home to many species of mammals, butterflies, a million other amazing insects, beautiful wild flowers and the tall proud grasses. Fortunately Irene is a mature suburb with many of its residents having taking the planting of indigenous plants seriously, some time back. This decision over the years has created an amazing environment of its own; similar to what has surrounded us for many years but far from identical. Different trees and vast expanses of open grassland attract different insects as opposed to our densely treed gardens, but yet we have created a unique serene environment which serves as a haven for its own unique wildlife. It is for this reason that we as residents should get to know what is in our village. A lot of us know our birds and know what can be found here, and oddly enough have seen the influx of different species over the years. For the purpose of this survey let me ask you; how many of us know what spiders we are sharing Irene with? How many species do we have? Are any venomous? Do any of us know what used to be here 20 years ago, compared to today? I doubt that anyone has the answer to these questions, not even the experts. From a scientific point of view, these are questions that need to be answered, and it is for this reason that I would like to propose that we (Irene residents) start the first Spider Monitoring in Cities project (SMIC) in South Africa. Only then can we say categorically that this is what we have here in Irene 2014. This survey will be followed up annually or every few years (to be decided), so that in future if an environmental disaster should occur, or the impact of garden insecticides on our insect life needs to be measured, as an example, we will then without hesitation, be able to produce known numbers and species, enabling us to make an informed assessment of the impact on our wildlife here in Irene. Our own Irene spider expert Prof. Ansie Dippenaar – Schoeman and other experts would like to invite all residents young and old to take part in this first of a kind ground breaking project. It will take place in November 2014. Please register early. You do not have to break a sweat , it will be gentle strolling and making use of your observational and capturing skills in your own garden.
If you would like to take part in this project please email me, Peter Webb, on peter@iconc.com or call me on 082 327 2090 and I will send you all the required details. There will be a talk on Spiders prior to the event (to be announced). A list of all spiders collected or photographed will be published. All records will be captured into the SANSA (South African National Survey of Archanida) data base. To read more about SANSA go to : http://www.arc.agric.za/arc-ppri/Pages/Biosystematics/SANSA.aspx In addition to a prize giving there will be an open forum discussion around the results, post the survey.
