CAPTAIN’s report I would like to start off by thanking those of you who attended the Golf AGM held recently. This was the opportunity to give you feedback on the last year, as well as vote in the new office bearers. Hayley Mendes stepped down after a number of years as Lady Captain and her place has been taken up by Tilla Janssen. I would like to, once again, thank Hayley for her time and input into ladies golf and wish Tilla and her new committee everything of the best. After the first weekend of dates for the Club Championships being called off due to the floods, I am pleased that the reserve dates went by without any incidents. The Men’s Champion for this year was Jacques Blaauw on +3, closely followed by Calvin Ferreira who ended up one behind. For a minute we were looking at a play-off which would have been interesting. Following the end of play, all the golfers were treated to a wonderful lunch and the customary prize giving. What has been very pleasing is talking and listening to our members over the last couple of weeks, and hearing the appreciation that

Yes, there are some issues that they will now be able to sort out during winter, but we can rightfully be proud of our course. Even the pro’s from the Big Easy event were very complementary of our course! As many of you are aware, we launched a “SOS” appeal to raise funds to get new sodding down in the area’s that we have seen take major stain following the floods and I would like to thank those of you who have contributed to the fund. We have managed to sod 1 000m2 so far. I have been approached by Flip Diedericks who is in the process of planning a golf trip to Las Vegas next year. The dates will be between 30 March and 10 April 2015. The plan is to be in Vegas for 5 to 6 full days, allowing for 3 rounds of golf and some sightseeing such as a helicopter flip to the canyon, shows, etc. Due to the amount of travel involved, the total trip will be around 9 to 10 days, and the approximate cost will be

around R25 000. Anyone interested in joining the tour party can call Flip on 082 930 2367. The Next Captains Challenge sponsored by Hokaai will be on 28 June in the afternoon.

So much has happened since I was appointed as Ladies Captain on 30 April taking over from Hayley. May I take this opportunity to thank everyone for your trust in me and for your support. It is an honour and privilege to be able to assist with this section on the golf committee. I am also proudly supported by Florence Vermeulen and Emma du Bruyn who have both made themselves available to serve on the golf committee. Welcome on board ladies.

My duties started on the first weekend in May by assisting Jannes at the Men’s Club Championships very early on a chilly Saturday and Sunday morning. Thanks to Hayley and Tanya for supporting and assisting me as well. I was tasked to be a marshal out on the course and to encourage our gents to avoid slow play during their tournament. The championship was well supported and a very successful event. Well done to Jannes and his staff. Our CCC Thursday Ladies League Team played in the Semi Finals at Irene on 8 May against the ladies from Waterkloof. Thankfully, our ladies won 3-0 which put them in the finals! The finals were played at Wingate on 15 May against the ladies from Woodhill Country Club. Waving the Centurion flag very high, our league team won the finals too in a nail biting finish and brought home the trophy! Sincere thanks and congratulations go out to the entire team. Amazing contributions from Sue Smith, Anne-Marie van der Bijl, Joey du Toit, Debra Arroya and Helga Engling! You ladies have made us all incredibly proud.

May has been a very busy month and the Ouma Smuts Golf day at Irene Country Club on 14 May was well supported by a number of the Centurion ladies. On 17 May our Saturday Women’s League kicked off and I was tasked in getting a team together. Our league team consisting of Ilze Brits, Elizma Swart, Tanya Hechter, Piret Vilborn, Joey du Toit and Helga Engling headed off to Blue Valley Golf course to face the ladies from Pretoria Country Club. The incredible news that Tanya Hechter had a hole in one on the 8th hole during her round of golf was delivered to me. Tanya recons that her playing partners did not even know that her ball had gone into the hole. It was a super excited Tanya that jumped up and down and screamed out… my ball is in the hole! Well done to Tanya. I am so proud of you! But that was not the end of the good news. Our amazing Saturday Women’s league team beat the PCC ladies 2-1 so came home victorious. The next league game was on 31 May at Silverlakes vs Els Club. By the time you’re reading this, we would have already hosted our Centurion Ladies Open. Please be reminded that our Mixed League starts on 22 June. Hope to see all of you at our weekly Thursday ladies games. Remember that we tee off from 11am in the winter field starting on 5 June.
