Living in peace

Although it seems hard to believe, Spring is nearly upon us. The recent evening thunderstorm and the few days of rain was a gentle reminder of what’s to come and our gardens certainly enjoyed the welcome little bit of water - just enough to awaken the plants and clear away some of the Winter dust. I’m sure it has inspired the many garden enthusiasts we have living in our community - the Irene Garden Club have just two get togethers left this year, so be sure to see if you are able to join them, details on page 29. The CPF are also getting into the swing of things and you will find their latest fund raiser details adjacent to this article. If you are a golfer then do try to support them as they are working hard to ensure our continued peace of mind. It seems our diaries will be filling up fast as the silly season has arrived early this year! Halloween will the first of many events and this is one the children always love. You can read all about the spooktacular details on page 9. Things are certainly starting to warm up all round and I for one, am looking forward to a fun filled wind down to the end of the year. I hope you are all enjoying the slightly warmer weather and I look forward to seeing more friendly faces out on the streets of Irene as we spur Spring on. Till next month

Dear Town Crier

“Concerned Irene resident“

Irene - a place of peace? It’s the last week in July and with Spring just around the corner, the birds have forgotten about our peaceful Irene. While working in the garden, I hear doves cooing non-stop, other doves telling me to “work harder, work harder!” and yet others constantly reminding me that “I’m a red-eyed dove”; as well as toppies chattering, weavers chirring, white-eyes twittering, grey louries telling me to “go away!”, bou-bou shrikes calling, and many others twittering and tweeting, and last, but not least, that spookvoel! (I saw a pair of them in my garden today, much to my joy!)

I LOVE LIVING IN IRENE!

Dear Editor I am appalled at what is happening to the old Irene Post Office building. This is an historic building and I believe that it is being desecrated and certainly detracts from the Irene that was. The fencing and canopies are unsightly and degrade the building and area. I would like to appeal to all Irene residents to not allow this to continue and to express your opinions.

Halloween At the last few Halloween evenings, parents expressed how difficult it was to walk around the whole of Irene looking for participating homes. This year we are trying something different! The Irene Association has kindly donated the use of the hall for a fun Halloween community event. We are asking the members of our community who normally participate and decorate their houses would come and rather decorate half a trestle table with their own Halloween things and put out candy for the kids. This way the kids can safely walk around and have fun seeing all the different tables! We are asking for a small table decor fee of R10 for half a table or R20 if you want a whole table. This money will be used to get a prize for the Best Decorated Table, help with cleaning the hall and buying small prizes for the kids.If you are interested in booking a place, please email me at amanda.comrie@gmail.com. We can only fit in 20 tables in the hall, so book fast! We will also be holding a Best Costume competition for kids of different age groups on the evening sponsored by Scrooge and Marleys, who will also be there selling exciting Halloween goodies! So please join us in this spooktacular community activity: Friday, 1 November 6:00 to 7:30 pm Irene Village Hall. Please note we ask you not to park near the hall as it is dangerous for young children walking, please park a block away and walk down. see you there !!

Only for the brave!

The Annual Irene Winter Solstice Polar Bear Party was held recently at Martin and Zani Teubes’ home. Friends and family descended from as far afield as Witbank to have a swim in the fresh Irene winter air. The evening started with Springbok rugby against Samoa on the big screen and there was great applause as the 30 strong gathering watched Bryan Habana score his 50th Test try as South Africa beat Samoa 56-23 to win the quadrangular tournament final in Pretoria. This was followed by a delicious Wildebees Curry and Rice prepared by Zani – some liked it hot in preparation for what was to come but others preferred not to test their refluxes! The guests ensured they had sufficient Dutch Courage before 23 of them plunged into the water which was sitting at a brisk 8,9⁰C. When they heard that the Irene air temperature was actually 4,9⁰C, some of the intrepid swimmers elected to rather stay in and do two more lengths! Certificates of Foolishness were presented to those who had completed two lengths, signed by Captain Martin Teubes and Expedition Leader Malcolm Fawkes. A great time was had by all and it was agreed that next year’s event will take place on 21 June 2014 at Johan and Carien’s house. See you there! Malcolm Fawkes P.S. “Fear is temporary, regret lasts forever” was the theme for the event above! (Only Thinus has regrets as he didn’t take the plunge!)

Dear Residents and ILA Members Spring seems to be coming early this year with Irene experiencing rain in August, which is unheard of in most quarters. Our gardens are just as confused with trees sprouting new buds and some even beginning to bloom! Not that any of that has limited the enthusiasm of many of our residents, led by Amelia Wolmarans, who got stuck in and assisted with the project to beautify the area around the railway bridge. This will be an on-going project and hopefully will inspire many to be involved in preserving the beauty of our village. The graffiti on many of our substations has also been removed by a few willing residents. One of which has a stock of Heritage Green paint and is willing to continue in the removal of evidence of vandals roaming our streets. Perhaps there is some unsightly graffiti outside your home and perhaps you’d like to do the same? Another wonderful initiative would be to ask our families who walk their dogs at the Oval to take along a bag and pick up their dog faeces so that everyone can enjoy spending time there. Security All incidents of crime have remained low since May 2013. Until recently we had experienced a 30-day crime free period! Two vehicle break-ins have since been reported, both on Pioneer Road. Unfortunately, the non-ILA member did not allow further investigation into the incident. Contact details Once again, just a reminder of our emergency contact numbers -

Power failures and our EBS Guards Power outages and general power failures at the access gates have led to a

lot of frustration. Once the power supply to booms is suspended the booms automatically stand in an open position until power is restored. To avoid damage, guards have been instructed not to tamper with the booms. It is not only rude but also highly inappropriate for residents to be abusive toward the guards due to procedural issues. We, once again, re-iterate that the ILA contracts EBS and that there is a standard operating procedure for everything, including complaints. Should you wish to make a complaint please follow acceptable protocol by contacting Jan Swanepoel, our ILA Village Manager. Your complaint will be heard and dealt with accordingly. We would also like to sincerely thank our residents who have made donations of tea and coffee etc. to our guards who work outdoors over the winter period. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. Closure project All of the eight gate LPR cameras have been installed and by the printing of this issue the remaining cameras will have also been installed. The video images are recorded and forwarded to EBS on-site monitoring. The perimeter fence upgrade is currently underway and will progress northwards around the village, from the Village Hall. The project is expected to take approximately three months. A number of private gates will need to be fitted with new ‘in-line’ contacts but residents will be called beforehand to arrange access. We do apologise for any inconvenience that the upgrade may cause but we are confident that it will vastly improve the efficiently of the fence and our security. Building contractors We appeal to residents to please inform the Village Manager whenever building work is carried out on their property and to provide him with full details of workers, including those sleeping on site. This will enable Jan and EBS to more effectively manage our security. Recent evidence in criminal activity points to contract workers on a building site being responsible and so it is vital that we have details of all workers to hand. Please also be advised that only two workers may sleep on site. Speeding We continue to see motorists fly through Stop streets and over circles with barely a glance to the left or right or any attempt to stop. Residents witnessing such behaviour should note the registration number and pass it to the Village Manager.

We are also seeing under-age children driving various unlicensed vehicles around the village. Parents are reminded that this is illegal and will cost them dearly should their children be involved in an accident - it does not bear thinking about! Please do not allow your children to drive any motorised vehicle on our roads. Membership Should you wish to join the ILA and contribute to the ongoing security in the village, please contact Alyson Lea-Cox (Cell: 072 714 3740). It would also be appreciated if any homes that are on the market could ensure that new owners are made aware of the ILA and the contributions that keep our village secure. Wishing you a safe and good month

Electrical contracting comes to the heart of Irene! Greetings Irene residents, I would like to introduce myself to my fellow villagers. My name is Graham Finbow and I’ve lived in Irene since February 1996 when my wife, Jenny, and my then two young children moved from Oxfordshire on a 2 year contract with an American Telecoms company to establish a local office. Uncle Sam was very successful but in 2001, I yearned for something new so set up my own company, also in Telecoms and Electrical Equipment. However, having time on my hands and also a background in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, I decided to embark on the process of gaining my Electrical contracting certification, otherwise known as the South African wireman’s licence. Now almost 2 years later I am registered with the Department of Labour and can work on any electrical installations (excluding specialised installations like petrochemical plants, operating theatres, etc). I can issue Certificates of Compliance (CoC’s) which you

084 742 7689

may have come across as a requirement when you move house. A CoC is also required if alterations/extensions are made to the premises’ wiring.

In the light of the current power interruptions here are a few words on the safety and regulations about portable generators sold at Makro, Builders Warehouse, etc. Bit of a long discussion but I’ll try and keep to the point. Having no power for up to 18 hours is quite frustrating. No TV, computer (unless you have a UPS), electric cooker and worst of all that frozen food slowly defrosting. No

wonder it’s very tempting to get a generator installed into the house to provide emergency power. However, there are certain rules that need to be complied with under the Electricity regulations. This is the exact clause from the South African National Standard for the Wiring of premises which I will now translate: 7.12.2.7 A 230 V generator with a V-O-V earth connection (centre tap on winding which is earthed), shall not be connected to a fixed electrical installation. Amdt 6 NOTE Such a generator may be used as a free-standing unit to provide power to specific appliances. Small petrol generators (i.e. A 230V generator with a V-O-V earth connection) are primarily designed for portable applications like at construction sites, fairgrounds, school sports days, etc where connecting to a local mains supply is not possible. You can run a 230V appliance from these generators. They are designed with safety in mind and as such they are wired differently to the system used in our houses. The supply coming from them is effectively ‘split’ into 2 sections with an earthed centre tap (V-O-V). This means that there is only about 110V between the Live or Neutral wires and earth. So if you are unlucky enough to get a shock because a cable gets cut into you will only (yes it is relative) be shocked with 110V not the normal 230V. Still nasty but slightly less lethal! Because of this ‘earthing’ configuration though, they must not be wired directly into your DB board in the house. It is perfectly safe to use them with an extension lead to the fridge/freezer or standalone plug in appliance like the TV but it cannot be wired directly into the house wiring. Circuit Breakers and Earth Leakage Units are not designed for this type of power delivery and the safety in your house will be compromised. So standalone is fine – wired direct into the house wiring/DB board is a 100% no-no! There are generators available for backup but they are specifically designed for purpose and they must be used with an SABS certified changeover switch. Remember, these regulations are there for the safety of all of us. Any questions on anything electrical please feel free to contact me for advice. Graham Finbow 084 742 7689.

Irene Train Bridge gets a facelift

In the year 1995 to 2000 the Irene Train Bridge was one of my main concerns in my Ward because the Irene Middle School children and other pedestrians had to walk on the road under the bridge or cross the railway line further up with no protection at all in order to get to the other side. One of my goals was to get funding from the Municipality to build a pedestrian footpath under the bridge and in 2000 my dream was realized, but it has since become one of my worst issues in the Ward. Maintenance at the bridge is a problem, simply because 4 different departments are responsible for keeping the area clean. It is an ongoing struggle to keep the entrance to the Irene Village clean and neat. Amelia Wolmerans, a resident from Irene, approached me earlier this year with a proposal to develop a Gorilla Garden (rockery, shrubs, aloes and succulents) with low maintenance on the sidewalks at the bridge. I welcomed her initiative and contacted Mr James van Rhyn, Urban Manager for Region 4 for his assistance. All the role-players had a meeting to discuss the way forward for this Community/ Municipal combined effort. The Municipality agreed to provide the plants and new swivel bins for the project as well as assist with the removal of rubbish, etc. On 26 and 27 July 2013 Amelia and her team did the necessary preparation and on 3 August 2013 all the parties will come together to do the actual planting. Residents from Irene also assisted by doing the actual planting as well as donating plants and fertilizer for the project. BP Irene kindly donated drinks for the morning and they have offered to help keep the area watered and clean. PMSA (Professional Medical Scheme Administrators) the administrators of Keyhealth will sponsor the labour for the project. I hope that this initiative will be the first of many such projects where the residents and the municipality take hands to make our environment a better place to live in. Regards Cllr/Rdl Christa Spoelstra

• DO NOT WAIT 24 HOURS BEFORE REPORTING YOUR CHILD MISSING!!! • Basic safety tips: know where your child is at all times, with whom they are and always make a mental note of what your child is wearing. • Always keep a recent photograph of your child in your purse/wallet or on you cell phone. In case of an emergency, then the photograph would be readily available. • Know the names, addresses and numbers of all your child’s friends. Be cautious of every friend they make and make an effort getting to know your child’s friends. • Be involved in your child’s live. Build a trusting relationship, but do not over-do it. Spend quality time with your children. Make your house a place where your child WANTS to be and also where he/she WANTS to bring his/her friends to. This way you will most of the time have your child right under your nose and your child will feel confident to share information with you. • Teach your children their own names, addresses as well as your name and telephone number. • Keep your children (especially the small ones) close to home and teach all your children to NEVER EVER walk alone, but always take a friend with them. (The Buddy System) Never ever send your children to the shop or anywhere else alone. • Get ID bracelets or other means of identification with your phone number on it. If you do not have an ID bracelet or something similar, when you go out to public places, make sure to write your telephone number on your child’s arm or somewhere visible. • Take your children to the nearest police station/hospital/clinic and show them how to get there. Point out land marks, to prevent them from getting lost. Teach them to take the same route to and from places (school, shopping centers, friend’s house). This way when your child is missing, you can start looking on the discussed route. • Teach your children to make loud noises, to scream in order to attract attention when they are in trouble. • Back to basics: teach them that they should not trust a stranger, should not accept anything from strangers or go anywhere with a stranger. Get a CODE WORD… when your child is approached by the stranger and the stranger does not know the CODE WORD, the child should know not to trust the person. • Parents who allow their children to have MxIT or Facebook, get a way to monitor it. Know who your child is talking to, show you are interested, familiarise yourself with the technology, the networks, slang language and always be one step ahead. • Teach your children other important numbers for:     
