Living in peace
Where Arline started her last message in the Dec/Jan 13 issue of our Town Crier with a ‘sigh of relief’ as the end of the year sped near, I write my first message with a ‘gasp’ that we are already into the second month of this New Year. Hopefully the rejuvenation the holidays usually bring is still with most of you and those New Year resolutions are going strong... Of course returning to our beautiful village makes the transition back to reality all the more easier. February is notoriously the month of love. Valentine’s Day, which according to Wikipedia is the second most celebrated day of the year (the first being New Year’s Day), is a day of courtly love. It has evolved into a day where one gets to express their love by presenting flowers, gifts and greeting cards reminding those special people in our lives just how much they mean to us. Receiving priceless handmade cards of love from our children is my favourite part of this day. This year it’s going to be even more eventful as our eldest daughter is attending her first school social – she is beside herself with excitement. The hype around a new dress (and it has to be red!), shoes and voting for Miss Valentine has consumed our household and this is just the first of many Valentine’s Days to come! Nonetheless I hope that you are able to spend not only this day but many days with your loved ones celebrating your relationships young and old. Be sure to add a little love to everything that you do this month, whether it be booking you Valentine’s dinner at Bruno’s, supporting your local community or participating in the annual Shavathon. This issue might just inspire you. As this year forges ahead I trust that each issue of the Town Crier will bring with it something of interest to each and every one of you. Please feel free to inbox me with anything you think would be worthwhile sharing with fellow residents and neighbours – info@tlgpublishing.co.za. Contributions and suggestions are always welcome. Till next month,
Tracey

Love is patient, love is kind . It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud . It is not rude , it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered , it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth . It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails... 1 Corinthians 13:4–8a Town Crier February 2013

The No.1 Good Luck of being an Irene Resident... do we really know it? Having Irene Dairy on our doorstep. Maybe a few more steps away for those at the northern extremity, but still lucky nonetheless. David, my husband, and I must exclaim either to one another or every person we meet, with no apologies for the repetition, “Just how lucky are we to have such a luxury on our doorstep” as the dairy? Man oh man, boy oh boy, by jingers, whoa, what! a dairy within walking distance? Yes, yes, yes, a fully functional, beautiful, exquisite, green, meadow’d, black-swan’d, strutting-multi-hued cockerels and their harem of hens and baby chicks, treed (ancient oaks nogal), and dozens of black and white splattered healthy goodlooking cows too boot! To quote from their website: Do you remember when milk was delivered to your door and the cream rose to the top? Do you want to experience it again? (and more to the point allow your children the same experience, even if you yourself were deprived of this sheer luxurious treat). Then look no further than Irene Dairy Shop! It is Town Crier February 2013
still renowned for its certified raw full cream milk (as well as low fat and fat free if you must) homemade yoghurt and rich thick cream (beats England’s world famous Devonshire Cream hands down), and much more. Goats milk too I do declare. And we have it all right here on our doorstep. If you really don’t want full cream (a mere 4%) then empty the gorgeous cream laden top into another jar for cooking or where beaten cream is called for in a recipe, and bobs-your-aunty: you got 2% or 0% milk already. Also great for thinning down that extra thick creamy cream for extra whipping. A few important facts worth noting: raw milk is far more nutritious than that over-boiled, pasteurised, flavourless gunk you think is doing you any sort of good whatsoever, from the supermarkets. For anyone living away from raw milk availability, this is certainly necessary but not preferable. I think Irene Dairy is one of the few (if not the only) legal raw milk operations in the country. A mere trot or picturesque amble down the road. Raw milk is more easily digested. Even if one is allergic to dairy, try Irene Dairy raw milk just a time or two and test yourself. Don’t take the medical ‘tests’ for granted. A little at a time, obviously, at first. Mix it with raw carrot juice (via a juice extractor) too if necessary - yummy. And even then, if you are still allergic to the milk, try just a little of
the cream. I give you another fact: cream is more easily digested by the body than milk. Many folk are allergic not to the creamy content but the mucous content within milk, which is mostly eliminated in cream. I know, I have suffered from migraines for years from milk, but not from small amounts of easily digestible cream. Go figure? Best part though, as I have recently turned 60 I’ve apparently started to slow down on my dairy/migraine allergy - yay. My mum would raise my hopes with: When you pass adolescence? Didn’t happen! When you have your first baby? Noooo, 2nd? Nooooooooo! Menopause? Uh uh, still got headaches. She never did mention over 60... lucky for mum, hers ended with her first child. My grandmother, after menopause... me, I had to go the full gambit and wait to 60 years of age. But to flay the old adage ‘better late than never’. However, don’t take my word for it, go to any one of many reputable websites, eg: http:// www.raw-milk-facts.com/what_is_ in_raw_milk.html

And this little miracle is within our easy grasping reach and price. Besides the exercise of a good walk down there will do your body, psyche, eyes and nose an enormous amount of health-givinggood even before the first sip.
Now for the nitty-gritty of my tirade... do you want to loose this emerald jewel? I think not! But if we don’t support the dairy, who knows, we could lose this magnificent gift. Tell your friends and neighbours, spread the word, but don’t let our dairy sales go down enough to one day us being the cause of its possible demise. A horrific thought to behold. Irene Farm invites visitors to relax in the serenity of an old-style farmstead. The Irene Farm remains an unmatched and tranquil gem in the heart of Gauteng. At the risk of repeating myself unashamedly “and it is right on our doorstep” go enjoy it and keep it going. Ros Ambler Lindley

Urban Conservation Initiative: Part 2 Invader plants found within the Tshwane District
Why declare plants invasive and which species are declared invasive alien plants? Many of us wonder why any government would declare beautiful plant species we would like to grow in our gardens ‘Alien’… However, one should consider that each environmental biome evolves differently, and that some plants could have a destructive impact on systems that took centuries to develop. These species of plants were originally brought to South Africa from other countries for their beauty, economic value or an also ecological purpose. As they were imported singularly without their natural enemies present in the South African environment, they were able to reproduce and spread prolifically. The invader plants and their seeds were able to spread rapidly and took up much of the natural space of our indigenous plants. Invasive alien plants thus threaten indigenous vegetation as they use up valuable habitat and limited water resources. Most of them require more water than indigenous plants and contributes to the depletion of scarce underground water resources. Another sometimes underestimated attribute of these plants are their burning habit, as many of them contribute to veldt fires! They are responsible for causing exceptionally hot fires, which ultimately affect the makeup of the soil and contribute to erosion. Weeds and invader plants are associated with the following negative impacts: o
Invaders compete with the agricultural environment;
o
Impact negatively on natural vegetation;
o
Displace indigenous plants and animals from their natural habitat;
o
Increase the severity, intensity and impact of fire;
o
Consume more water than indigenous plants and thus lead to the depletion of water in catchment areas; and
o
Cause obstruction in natural waterways
Town Crier February 2013
9 o
Contribute to erosion, which in turn increase the risk of possible flood damage.
How can we assist in their control? •
Learn how to identify and control (remove) invasive alien plants.
•
Join or form a hacking team to remove invaders from your area.
•
Remove invasive plants while they are still small.
•
Plant indigenous (local) plants in your garden.
•
Buy only indigenous plants from your nursery.
•
Replace invasive alien plants with indigenous plants.
•
Tell people about the dangers of invasive alien plants.
Controls: We are obliged to control weeds and invader plants species in areas where they are not permitted in terms of Regulation 15 of the Conservation of Agricultural Resources Act (CARA). Special control methods are to be used which are appropriate for the specific identified species concerned, as well as in consideration of the ecosystem in which they occur. One or a combination of various acceptable control methods may be used: Methods used are uprooting, felling, cutting, burning, treatment with registered herbicides, also biological control or any other recognized and appropriate methods. Repetitive follow-ups are necessary to achieve control. Find out which herbicides are allowed in eco context. Biological control entails the use of host-specific natural enemies such as insects or disease-causing micro-organisms which destroy the alien plants. Before introducing agents, scientists first test these natural enemies in the plant’s country of origin extensively under quarantine conditions, as to ensure that they will not be detrimental to crops or other plants in South Africa. Invader species indentified within Tshwane Town Crier February 2013
10 Category 1: Declared weeds These are plants which must be controlled (removed) on land or water surfaces by all land users. They may no longer be planted or propagated and all trade in their seeds, cuttings or any other propagation material is prohibited. They are: Lantana, Pompom weed, Bug weed (Solanum Mauritianum), Azolla, Queen of the Night, Pampas grass, Cat’s Claw creeper, Red sesbania, Yellow Oleander, Yellow Bells and Water Hyacinth Category 2: Declared invaders with commercial value These are plants that pose a threat to the environment but they are also a source of fruit, fuel, medicinal extracts, animal fodder, building material or shelter, or they can be applied in order to stabilize soils also. These species are only allowed to occur in specific demarcated areas. If these plants are used for commercial purposes, land users have to obtain a special water-use license, as the plants consume large volumes of water. Where the plants occur outside demarcated areas they are required to be removed. Those are: Black wattle, Patula pine, Sisal, Red eye, Grey Poplar, Watercress, Port Jackson willow, Guava, cluster Pine, Honey locust, weeping Willow (not to be confused with the indigenous willow) Category 3: The declared invader species with ornamental value These are plants which can become invasive but are generally considered to have ornamental value. In terms of Regulation 15 of CARA, they are not allowed to occur anywhere except in biologically controlled reserves, unless they were already in existence when the regulation came into effect (30 March 2001). This implies that existing plants do not have to be removed by the land user. However, they must be kept under strict control and no new planting may be initiated by the owner, and the plants may no longer be sold: Jacaranda, Syringa, the Australian Silky Oak, St Joseph’s lily, Sword fern, Tipu or the Tipuana tree, as well as the New Zealand Christmas tree More information on these species and which herbicides to apply as per specific specie, can be obtained from: Town Crier February 2013

What is a massage candle? Ideal for massage and beauty therapists and anyone else who loves to pamper themselves, a massage candle is formulated specifically for use as a complete body product. Pure soy oil with selected botanical massage oils (such as: shea butter, arnica, marula, coconut and avocado oil) are combined to produce a massage candle. Additionally, essential oil blends are added and selected for their detoxifying or rejuvenating benefits. The soft textured oil when burning these candles makes for a unique, warm-oil massage experience. Because of their unique ingredients, a true massage candle will melt at just over body temperature. The candle is melted and it secretes butter oil and not wax. Soy Wax is 100% natural and derived from vegetables which is far better than paraffin which is derived from petroleum. Soy Wax holds more fragrance and releases it naturally, longer and faster where as paraffin has to be mixed with other chemicals to enable it to release fragrances. Spoil yourself or a loved one in February with a soy candle back massage which promises to relax pamper and rejuvenate!

Measuring up for “Vegas”
What would Marilyn Monroe say if she knew her famous white dress could be run up in a day for under R20? It’s thanks to people like Jan McGuinness that the Irene Dramatic Society stays solvent! Jan took over from Pam Mayo as wardrobe mistress in about 2000, but she has been involved in an off-stage capacity since the 1970s, serving tea, making posters, painting scenery, selling tickets, secretary, treasurer, you-name-it, including some 20 years on the social committee. Jan recalls that when she and Barrie first joined the Irene Dramatic Society, we had a huge wardrobe in Gordon and Pam Mayo’s four-car garage, which was packed to the ceiling with boxes and clothes racks. Pam was permanent wardrobe mistress and very meticulous, so there was little needed apart from minor fitting alterations and re-cutting from one show to the next. When the Mayos retired to George, most of the wardrobe was stored under the stage and a lot was ruined when the area was flooded by an underground spring. What was left was given into care of various places and subsequently lost or damaged and we had to start hiring and making again. In 1999 Macbeth was the set book for matric and Jan had to make about 40 surcoats etc for knights, soldiers and so on. She became even more involved with costumes when she retired from the committee in October 2000. She has also made umpteen costumes for local schools’ dramatic and hip-hop productions, various individuals’ productions staged in and around Irene. Most complicated When Jan made German officers’ uniforms for ‘Allo ‘Allo, the genuine German war surplus ordered for Jules Shop was detained by Customs, which meant that she had only ten days to make them all before opening night! Next down on her ‘most difficult’ list is a Cinderella ball gown, which had the most ‘bling’ of any dress she has ever made – every day she decided to add more. Town Crier February 2013
23 Then there were the ‘Blackadder’ Regency style costumes for the vampires and king in Discworld. Near disaster Another close call that Jan remembers involved the sailor and army shirts for South Pacific. The pattern measurements were wrong, with the result that the smallest man’s size was only big enough to fit a small woman. She had to insert pleats and gussets to avoid having to buy more material and starting again from scratch. A couple of Jan’s more memorable projects were Grease and Little Shop of Horrors for Cornwall Hill College. She has also made costumes for individual themed dancers, as well as charity shows to raise funds for the Friends of Smuts and St Martin’s Church. Next show Her current project is costumes for the musical production The Man who invented Las Vegas, which the Irene Dramatic Society will stage on 23 February and 2 March 2013 at the Irene Village Hall. All profits to go to Irene Homes. Enquiries to Adrian on 082-371-5488 or irene.dramatic. society@gmail.com. Patricia Pieterse is measured up for her costume as Virginia Hill in "The Man who invented Las Vegas" to be staged at the Village Hall on 23 February and 2 March 2013. This musical showcases many new faces, including Alison Ballard as Lana Turner. Many Irene folk will remember Alison's great-aunt Peggy Ballard who first joined IDS in the 60s. Shave or Spray at a Shopping Centre When: Saturday, 2nd March 2013 It’s our 10th Shavathon this year – come and celebrate the Shavathon of the decade with us – bring 10 family members, friends or colleagues along to shave or spray in solidarity with cancer survivors, on Saturday, 2nd March 2013. This year we are adding exciting colour hair gels to the mix! Where: Your local participating shopping centre You can find a list on www.shavathon.org.za. How much? Adults can shave or spray their head for a donation of R50 (or more) and children, under 12 years old, for R25. You can pay cash at the venue or to fast track the process you can make an online donation in advance and take your confirmation e-mail to the venue as proof of payment. Want to help? You can also volunteer in these ways to help make Shavathon 2013 a resounding success: •
At your local shopping centre’s Shavathon Event: assist with spraying, shaving, running errands, public registrations, etc
•
Organise a Shavathon Event in your workplace, school or institution
•
Raise funds by creating your own online fundraising project for Shavathon
Town Crier February 2013
25 What time will a Shavathon be held? A public Shavathon event, at a shopping centre, is usually open to the public from 09h00 to 15h00, but may be extended to 16h00. It is advisable to arrive early to avoid disappointment. Please contact the shopping centre beforehand to confirm the times that the Shavathon will take place, as this may differ from place to place, and confirm whether or not the Shavathon will continue on Sunday, 3rd March 2013, as well. (Not all venues will be offering the extra day). What happens after I’ve made a donation? •
After registration and making your donation (or producing proof of your online payment), you will be asked to move to the area where your head will be shaved or sprayed. You can choose the length of your shave or the colours to be sprayed.
•
Please take note that CANSA Shavathon will no longer do a ‘clean shave’ due to risk factors – the lowest number you can shave is a number 1.
•
If you would like to donate your ponytail, our volunteers are equipped to accept your hair donations – they will snip it and package it for you! Please remember that your hair must be 22cm or longer, clean, dry and free of permanent colour, bleach or other chemical treatments to be donated.
•
The process could take between 15 to 60 minutes depending on the queue.

26 Dear Residents and ILA Members A very warm welcome to 2013! We hope that the Festive Season was kind to you and that you are enjoying the challenges of the New Year. Firstly, a very big thank you to our residents who kindly stepped up to bless our guards with various treats as well as cash donations in December 2012. A formal letter of appreciation was sent out but we felt that their generosity of spirit deserved further notice and thanks. We would especially like to thank Ros Lindley for stepping in and making up packages on Christmas Eve. Irene is a beautiful place filled with generous, beautiful people! Phase 2 Technology Implementation and Pledge Update: Approximately 75% of the pledges have been collected to date. This does still leave us short on the original budget. That said, the delay in proceeding with the technology solution has allowed us time to gain insight into the impact of the closure arrangements. ILA committee members are meeting with the identified technology supplier and EBS on 24 January 2013 to revisit the plan we presented to the community last year. We believe there is potential to reduce the cost and to ultimately procure a solution that will achieve all the objectives we originally set out to achieve. We would anticipate presenting a revised proposal to the community within the next 4 to 6 weeks and subject to approval, to have it implemented with a further 6 to 8 weeks. We thank you for your patience in this regard. Gates and booms: Not surprisingly, it is necessary to highlight the on-going problems that we are experiencing with motorists not following protocol around the gates and booms in our village. Tailgating at these points is resulting in damage to vehicles and property that is highly costly to manage, in addition, the booms in Krige Lane are either being left open or are being maliciously damaged. Out of respect for the safety of our village and the security initiatives undertaken, we would request that our residents follow Town Crier February 2013
27 the required protocol at the gates and booms by not tailgating, as well as adhering to instructions from the guards manning the gates, and in so doing ensure that no damage is incurred. (As a side note, please be advised that the ILA does not automatically pay for damage to property but takes all necessary steps to claim damages from the guilty party to manage repairs). Guards: Should you have any issue with the protocols around the gates or the behaviour of any of our guards we request that you under no circumstances enter into an argument or abuse our guards. Please direct your communication to the ILA Village Manager, Jan Swanepoel at jan. swanepoel@irene.co.za or 083 607 6600 and your issue will be dealt with promptly. Crime feedback: We are pleased to report a downward trend in the incidents of crime. The vigilance and commitment from EBS, especially during the evening hours, along with the main gate closure from about 22h00 to 05h00, has resulted in the criminal element having to work a lot harder for easy pickings. We would remind our residents that negligence is the most challenging opponent in our village with many cars being left accessible with valuables on display. To ensure that we take advantage of the progress, please ensure that your home and your vehicles are secured and do not make our village an easy target for this sort of crime. Members: New members are invited to attend our monthly ILA meeting, the third Thursday of every month at Irene Primary School at 19h30. We would like to meet you and introduce you to what we do and answer any questions you may have. We are also undertaking an initiative to build community spirit and spend a little time getting to know one another and in so doing are having a ‘Bring and Braai’ on the Oval every third Sunday, with Sunday 17 February 2013 being the first gathering in front of the club house. We hope that our fellow
28 Irene residents will come out and enjoy some company and good weather with us. Marketing: The ILA is in need of a marketing volunteer. Assistance is required in the area of non-membership and we would ask any resident who is willing to be involved with the recruitment of non-member residents to contact us by making contact with Jan at the provided number or Alyson Lea-Cox at 072 714 3740. Once again we would like to thank our contributing members for their ongoing support and confidence. Together we are able to make a difference in securing our village.
