LIVING IN Peace

Hello 2017! Just a few weeks into the new year and it already is proving to be as busy as ever! With the kids back to school and the everyday routines settling back in, it’s wonderful to be back to life as we know it in Irene. On our return from our December break we were thrilled to see that our village had it’s fair share of rain. The beautiful lawns, gorgeous gardens and flourishing verges are proof that the rain was most welcome. We do however, still have to be careful with our water usage as our dams are somewhat fuller but nowhere near where they need to be for the water restrictions to be lifted. This issue reflects on some of the wonderful events of 2016. In true Irene fashion, the first community fundraiser is just around the corner - please support the SPCA by popping into the Village Hall on 4 March to see what treasures you can find.

We’ve also included a reminder to diarise the Irene Homes Annual Fete 1 May 2017. For those who may be new to our village, or for those who would like to become more involved this year, we’ve repeated the local community club information. This year we have decided to feature the places of interest in and around Irene, starting with the Smuts House Museum in this issue. With each coming issue we will place a front cover picture of the place of interest for that issue - see if you can guess them before reading about them within the magazine. Irene has many hidden treasures and we look forward to sharing them with you. As always, please feel free to send me any editorials, pictures or information that you think is worthwhile sharing. You can email me on info@tlgpublishing.co.za.

‘Till next month

The (qualified and registered) Electrician’s responsibility in doing a CoC A short information article by Graham Finbow

So you’re selling your house in Irene and the Estate Agent says you must get an Electrical Certificate (CoC). You shop around and get the cheapest one. You may also have to get a gas and electric fence CoC. It is the law and it has changed in the last few years.

yellow form mean? And, more importantly, what did the electrician do and what should they have done?

However, just quoting the price of a CoC over the phone is a no-no. Without knowing the size of the property, how old it is, how many distribution boards it has, single or 3 phases and so on, it can be a nightmare. For example “The cheapest guy didn’t ask any questions or even ask to come round”. Bit of an indication that!

The electrician’s responsibilities: (This will depend on the type of premises.)

So you agree on the price, have a test and inspection and the person (or someone else) mends the broken things, labels the DBs, does all the measurements and so on in accordance with the CoC. He puts his name, address, phone number and 2 numbers (Wireman’s license and Department of Labour current registration number IE and GN numbers) on the CoC. You pay the electrician, sell the house and move to wherever, happy as Larry. But... the new owner moves in and things don’t work or the house trips! Other than calling your conveyancing lawyer what does that

Here’s what they should have done and what is their responsibility (remember, it’s the law).

• • •

• • • • •

Go round the premises and take photos, draw the rooms, count the plugs and lights and correlate them with the distribution board/s. Test up to and including the plugs, earthing mandatory. Test the bonding for shocks in the shower, kitchen, top of the stove etc. Check all the lights switch on and off. The electrician can agree with the owners to replace the bulbs/fittings or list them in the CoC. Check all the disconnectors work. Stove, geysers, motors, air-cooled hand driers, heat pumps, aircons etc. Check that all the DBs are labelled correctly. Check that the wire is the right type and the right size inside and out. Check that all the protection devices are correct and everything has been installed professionally. Check that the incoming power will

• • •

trip the main switch and the main earth is correct. Check that alternate sources of power are installed correctly and work. Check that at the time the CoC is done the Earth leakage unit worked. Check that all safety signs work and fire barriers are ok.

The new owner’s responsibilities: (Again depending of the type of premises.) •

They are responsible for anything plugged into the plugs. This includes lights, gate motors (plugged in), hairdryers; fridges tumble driers, kettles etc. They are also responsible for all fixed appliances. Kitchen stoves, geysers, fixed gate motors, fitted generators, fixed lights, aircons, heat pumps etc.

Finally... Call the number on the form (the electrician), then the ECB or the ECA if it’s a big job or the Department of Labour. P.S. I will always give free advice to anyone in the area and I do single phase or 3phase CoC’s. Plus all the other electrical stuff too.

DEAR IRENE RESIDENTS & ILA MEMBERS

We hope that all our residents enjoyed a restful and happy festive season. Thank you to all those who so kindly contributed to our ‘Christmas for the Guards’ initiative. All our EBS staff received a generous Christmas ‘box’ as well as a large bag of goodies and tinned food to help them through Christmas and New Year. The ILA sponsored a braai on Christmas Day and KFC on New Year’s Day with residents also delivering fresh fruit, muffins and other food items during the holiday, which was much appreciated! Perimeter electric fence We have experienced a lot of damage to the wires and poles due to falling branches during the recent heavy rains. Once again, may we ask our perimeter residents to please check trees and shrubs inside their boundaries on a regular basis? There should be at least 1m gap, please, between foliage and fence. Shooting wildlife

is illegal and can lead to prosecution. Please report these incidents and try to take a photograph and the Reg. No. of the vehicle involved. Power outages A reminder that as soon as there is a power outage, residents should immediately report it to Tshwane preferably via SMS, as within 10 secs or so you will receive a Ref No. SMS the word POWER followed by your municipal acct. no. to 44676. Use the same SMS to report future outages. The Tshwane SMS with Ref no., together with the time of the outage, should be forwarded to Cllr Gert Visser, preferably via WhatsApp, please, to Cell: 083 634 0301. Please do not waste time checking on Facebook or other social media to see if someone else has reported the outage! Gert needs many Ref nos and addresses to establish the extent of the outage.

Sadly, we received a report over December about the shooting of chickens Lost pets on Nellmapius Drive! There were also incidents in the village where rabbits and All dogs should have a tag with name, pigeons were shot. This is a reminder address and cell no, please. Pets are that shooting wildlife including any bird,

regularly dropped off at The Oval and we just do not have the facilities to care for them. If you find a dog in the street, please try to care for it or see if a friend can help until we can find the owner.

to a cell number. This is a scam! Please be wary of such calls - phone your employee first!

Building and renovations

We welcome all new residents to our beautiful village. Irene is Gauteng’s best kept secret and we hope you will be very happy here!

A reminder please, to send Jan details of builders or contractors working at your property. Most crime in Irene is builder-related, so we do need to keep a log of all building activity in the village. Violation of bylaws The ILA is unable to act on behalf of residents in respect of bylaw infringements. Residents should contact the relevant Tshwane Dept directly. Should you be unsure of who to contact, please email Cllr Visser for assistance gert.p.visser@gmail.com Spam phone calls We have had reports of spam phone calls again! Callers phone with news that your domestic worker or gardener has died and that a large sum of money is needed for the funeral - to be immediately transferred via cash-send

A little piece of history: tucked away, down a narrow road lined with beautiful trees, lays a piece of history on our doorstep. Smuts House Museum (the ‘Big House’) was home to General Jan C. Smuts (1870 to 1950), one of South Africa’s greatest sons. He bought the wood and iron building that had served as the officers’ mess for £300. It is believed that the building was originally prefabricated in Britain, taken to India by the British Army and later shipped to South Africa. It was then dismantled and brought to Pretoria by rail. It arrived at the Doornkloof farm by ox wagon, where it was re-erected at the substantial cost of £1000 in 1909. General Smuts was at sea, on his way to England as a member of the National Convention delegation, when Mrs Smuts moved her family into the house on 10 July 1909. The plan was altered on rebuilding and as the years passed, a kitchen and pantry (1918) and other rooms were added, as well as the verandahs were enclosed (front verandah, 1942). The Big House is, however, substantially as it was a century ago.

Town Crier February 2017

When you visit the museum, the unpretentious building strikingly illustrates Smuts's indifference to luxury and ease of living, and here he spent the happiest hours of his life. He found his peace at Doornkloof and it was here that he retreated from the affairs of State which occupied so much of his life. He found he could also indulge his absorbing passions for botany and philosophy. At Doornkloof he could enjoy the simple life of a farmer, father and grandfather. After his death in 1950, Mrs Smuts continued to live in the only real home she had ever known, until her death in 1954. Both General and Mrs Smuts died in the Big House. Their ashes were scattered, as were other members of the Smuts family, on the top of Smuts Koppie - the rugged hill behind the house The Smuts House Museum seeks to represent General Smuts’s lifestyle and multi-facetted career, as well as to promote the holistic vision on which he expounded in his life and writings. Ouma’s Tea Garden

When you visit the museum, be sure to take the time to visit Ouma’s Tea Garden. Amongst some of the famous guests whom Ouma, Smuts' mother entertained in her home were the British Royal Family, who visited the Prime Minister and his wife at Doornkloof while on the Royal Tour in 1947. With refreshments and lunch (or perharps some tea and scones or one of Ouma's favourite dishes!) on offer, you are guaranteed a peaceful meal located in the lush gardens of the Smuts House Museum.

Vanilla Shortbread Hearts

23

Ingredients 250g unsalted butter, room temperature 250g icing sugar, sifted 15ml (1 table spoon) ice water 15ml (1 table spoon) vanilla extract 500g cake flour 330g castor sugar Directions Preheat the oven to 180C. In the bowl of your stand mixer, use the paddle attachment to beat together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the ice water and vanilla. Mix well. With the mixer on low, slowly add the flour and mix until incorporated. Do not over mix. On a lightly floured surface, using half the dough at a time, roll the dough to 1cm thickness. Cut into desired shapes like hearts using a heart shape cookie cutter, but ensure that you cut as close together as possible. (The dough can be re-rolled once, but will become tough.) Place the cut cookies on parchment lined baking sheets. Bake for 13 - 15 minutes until the edges are lightly browned. Remove the tray from the oven and place on a wire rack. Use a fine mesh sieve to generously sprinkle with castor sugar immediately, while the cookies are still warm. Allow the cookies to cool before gently shaking off the excess sugar.

Build your own owl house

We are lucky enough to have large established trees on our gardens and so building an owl house in your back yard is quite possible.

You can construct an owl box from standard tongue and groove pine ceiling boards on a 30mm x 30mm pine frame. Purchase the wood in an untreated form as normally supplied wood is usually treated with poisonous insect repellent. You can either build a box with a restricted access hole – one small hole in the case of the Barn Owl – or with large access holes on all four sides – in the case of the Spotted Eagle Owl. In both cases, the access hole should be located in such a position that the baby birds cannot fall out of the box. A small landing area (15cm x 10cm) should be attached to the Barn Owl Box at the base of the access hole and the roof slopes should be towards the small front. The roof slopes for the Spotted Eagle Owl box should slope towards the large side of the box. Roof overhangs on the sides of 5cm would give more weather protection and the wood can be treated on the outside only with a good lead-free

preservative.

Pine needles are found to be the best nesting material with which to cover the base of the box. With any luck, an owl family will find your owl house and you will enjoy watching them nest. Information taken from www.birdlife.org.za.
