LIVING IN Peace

The past few weeks are proof that our weather patterns are changing! From a very wet week of constant rain, back to the hot balmy days and has anyone else noticed the odd strong wind every now and then? The rain was a welcome relief to our very dry summer and has helped ease the burden of the water restrictions for now. You will notice the Destination Irene logo adorning our front cover this issue. TLG Publishing are proud to be a part of this growing brand. Last year we assisted with the publishing of the Destination Irene magazine and this year we are pleased to be involved in the 2017 edition. Building on the brand, we are in the process of developing the website which features weekly blogs on things and places to visit in the area as well as some more information on other activities - all of which make up our beautiful area. Our front cover this issue depicts a building that often doesn’t get the recognition it deserves in our Village.

The Irene Village Hall has the most interesting history which you can read about in our Local is Lekker section. Thanks to the dedication of Barbara Tanton, the building is kept in pristine condition. If you haven’t already visited, then take a walk down to see for yourself. Whilst there also pop into the Library. It’s rare to have a community library on ones doorstep and if you have small kids, they will enjoy the visit too. We’ve included some more information on the Irene Library in this issue. Upcoming dates to diarise include the Irene Homes Annual Fete taking place on 1 May 2017. Please contact the Homes should you have any donations or if you would like to assist in any way. As the mornings and evenings get chillier by the day, I hope you enjoy the last few weeks of summer... ‘Till next month

2018 ADMISSIONS PROCEDURE All admissions for Grade 1 for 2018 must be done via the Gauteng Department of Education website: www.gdeadmissions.gov.za. Registration on this website should open soon. The Admission Checklist Form can be collected from the school reception once the GDE has announced the dates. 2017 bird of the year

BirdLife have announced the Lappet-faced Vulture as the Bird of the Year for 2017. The Lappet-faced Vulture (Torgos Tracheliotos) is an Old World Vulture and lives throughout Africa. Preferring to live in the dry savannah, thornbush, arid plains, deserts with scattered trees and open mountain slopes, they love undisturbed open country with minimal grass cover. Ranking as the longest and largest winged vulture in its range, the Lappet-faced Vulture is a huge species. Its bill can be up to 10cm long and 5cm deep – perfect for a scavenging bird. The black feathers found on the vultures back are lined with brown and their underside ranges from pure white to buff-brown. Synonymous with the vulture species, they have a bald head with colouration ranging from reddish to dull pink. A combination of a colourful head and fleshy folds on the side are distinctive in these birds.

it can tear through tough hides and knotty muscles. Solitary birds, they do not nest in cohesive colonies as do many smaller vultures. Nesting takes place from May to January and the huge nest is formed by a pile of neat sticks. Often lined with green leaves as well as animal hair and skin, they are almost always placed in the main fork or the top of an Acacia tree. One or two eggs are incubated by both parents for 54 to 56 days and young fledglings only leave the nest at 124 to 135 days old. In October 2015 the Lappet-faced Vulture IUCN status was updated to Endangered making its nomination as Bird of the Year for 2017 all the more important for its awareness. Information sourced from: Wikipedia.org and www.birdlife.org.za.

A scavenging bird, they feed mostly on animal carcasses which they spot themselves or by watching other vultures. Being such a large bird, they are the most powerful and aggressive of the African vultures which generally results in other vultures ceding a carcass to them. With its large beak

DEAR IRENE RESIDENTS & ILA MEMBERS The recent spate of cable theft has left many of us very frustrated over the past few months. Our ILA Chairperson recently met with the relevant Tshwane representatives in an effort to understand and develop a strategy to minimise the extent of the power outages experienced. Please understand that this is an ongoing process and will not solve the problem overnight. However, it is a step in the right direction and we believe there are ways to curb this problem in the long run. We trust our efforts will prevail. Power outages Please note that when the ILA is notified of a power outage, we then liaise with the relevant council members as to the estimated time of restoration. In the event that the power is not restored within the estimated timeline given, we will revert with an updated time as soon as it is received. We cannot be held responsible should restoration take longer than expected. All ILA members are on the ILA WhatsApp group and we will keep you informed as we receive updates from

Council. If you are not receiving Jan’s reports on the power situation, check that you have his cell number in your contacts. If you still do not receive his messages, call Jan before the next power outage, to ensure you are listed. We would humbly request that residents do not ask for too many updates during the day. Here are a few tips to help, in the event of a power outage: • Try not to open the fridge – this will help preserve your fresh food for as long as possible. • Keep a gas stove and gas lamp handy, as well as some long-life milk – to save you opening the fridge every time you need that cup of coffee. • If over a weekend, use the opportunity to take your family out for the day Rietvlei and the Farm are right on our doorstop - what a wonderful opportunity to spend quality time together. • If staying at home, go for a walk or a cycle and play games with the children - it will be a precious memory they will never forget!

Security Complaints against the guards should be reported directly to Jurie, EBS Site Manager, or Jan Swanepoel, Village Manager. Please provide date, time and the gate where the incident occurred as well as full particulars of the complaint. Please do not call the Control Room as our EBS Site Manager and Village Manager may not hear about the complaint until much later. Alternatively, you may email your complaint to jan. swanepoel@irene.co.za. Access control Should residents have any suggestions about the current access control system, please feel free to contact Jan directly. Please do not confront the EBS guards or Armed Reaction Officers. EBS cannot make any changes to our access control unless approved by the ILA. EBS access to properties Please note that should your home be inaccessible to EBS in an emergency situation, it is advisable to install a lock box outside your gate. It is

recommended that the code be changed each time the box is used. The code should be emailed to elsie@ebssecurity. co.za. Dogs Residents are reminded that when out walking or running with their dog(s), they must keep them on a leash at all times. Owners must also be able to control their dogs in order to prevent potential attacks on pedestrians, cyclists or other dogs. Every effort should be made to prevent dogs from running into the road, each time the gate is opened. We recommend a barrier between your garden, garage and driveway to safeguard young children and to prevent dogs from escaping. Lost and found pets Lost and found pets have increased significantly, since Christmas! Residents are asked to please take more care by putting identification tags on their pets. Please let us know as soon as a dog goes missing. Please also ensure that

14 your domestic staff calls you when Fido or Fifi has disappeared. Building and Renovations Residents planning to build or renovate, are requested to please follow our Building Rules. Irene is a peaceful suburb and with the fast pace of life today, residents really cherish and value their weekends. These rules are based on Council bylaws. All building should please stop by 13h00 on Saturdays and not commence again until 07h30 on Monday mornings. Please consider those around you and, where possible, let them know your building schedule so they can plan their days around it. We have many elderly residents who stay at home all day. Residents near you may be unwell or recuperating and then there are new Moms and those who work from home. This will be much appreciated and go a long way towards good neighbourliness in the future.

doing wheelies and scrunching up the gravel at St Martin’s Church in King St. Whilst this is a lot of fun, it is extremely time-consuming to rake the driveway level again! We would ask that children do not use the church grounds to ride their bikes, please. School holidays Members should please remember to send Alyson their holiday dates and who to contact, whilst they are away. Changes to personal data EBS Controllers are not permitted to accept any changes to personal data, over the phone or via email. If you have any changes to report, please email them to Alyson and she will update the ILA database and forward the information to EBS’ admin staff. The school holidays are almost upon us.To those who are going away, please drive safely - we wish you a safe and pleasant journey.

In 1923 a group of Irene residents raised 293 pounds to build a library and a village hall. The library was a west facing room, not much larger than a garage, and both became the responsibility of the local Irene Association.

The Hall was first used as a Post Office and also as a Circuit Court complete with holding cells. The MOTHS used the hall for dancers and actually wore out the floor from dancing! Ex-serviceman voluntarily installed improvements and carried out

extensive repairs to the building after the Second World War. In 1949 it became a depot of the Transvaal Provincial Library serving a village of less than 800 people. From its inception until June 1969 it was run by voluntary workers, and eventually it became a branch of the Verwoerdburg Public Library with paid staff appointed by the council. In the early 1960’s money was raised to build a modern library adjacent to the old library. All this was done by the Irene Association. As Peggy Peters wrote:

The people involved with building the Irene Village Hall

17 “It was indeed a family affair for the Irene community. Its members had purchased the bricks and cement, the wood and the steel, the windows and the doors for the library. They were their own contractors. It was no small wonder that Irene was proud of its new library building.

Sundays the hall is hired by The Wild Olive Christian Fellowship. The Pretoria Youth Theatre also put on performances throughout the year.

The library was officially opened on October 16, 1965, by the Director of the Transvaal Provincial Library Services. (Information obtained from the Nigel Helme book IRENE).

The Irene Association (a voluntary group) still continue to manage the Village Hall and are constantly carrying out improvements to the Hall.

Today the Village Hall and Library are as vibrant as ever. During the week the hall is used for ballet, Dancing Divas, belly dancing and ballroom dancing. Most Fridays and Saturdays the hall is hired out for parties, weddings etc. On

The library is still a very important part of Village life and it is used extensively by Irene residents.

Barbara Tanton is the Chairperson of the Irene Association and she can answer all enquiries about the Hall.

volunteers needed In 2012, Luisa Wood started a library at the Irene Middle Farm School with the help of some volunteers. Today the library has become a haven, an absolute attraction at the school, and 50 to 60 children eagerly go to the library during their long break from 12h00 to 12h30 daily, from Tuesday to Friday. They need MANY volunteers to help out with the demand. If you have, even if it’s just half an hour a week, to give to help these children with their reading and general knowledge, please contact Luisa on 082 491 4959 or 012 667 5390.

Flooring

- what can it do to your interior space? The advances in technology are increasing at an incredibly rapid rate – as most of us can relate to. This is happening in every aspect of our lives and now it even impacts on the flooring we use for our living spaces. The leader in flooring technology is a local company, Belgotex . Belgotex is a local manufacturer of carpets, vinyl and laminated flooring exporting its products worldwide. As we have experienced with all technology products, they become better and cheaper. This is the same with flooring products. Their vinyl products carry a 10 year warranty and some of their carpets are made from recycled products with manufactured cleaning and anti-allergen features.

It doesn’t end there! When your interior designer suggests that your living space needs to be ‘done’ from top to bottom, the bottom starts with the flooring. When they talk about starting with a clean page, they are absolutely correct. The first item they then need to add to their clean sheet is the flooring. Here they have the choice of carpeting, vinyl’s or laminates. This not only adds colour, but texture too. With the base or first layer sorted, the designer can then ‘colour in’ the rest of the picture. Here Belgotex, again, is a leader with the introduction of their Lifestyle Range. They have taken their old trusted and proven products and

a t y o w s o t

S w h u c l a r w c p

25

added new ranges that will compliment them into a range that will cover all your flooring needs. They have then organised them in colour ranges that will meet all personality types. Some say that you are either a ‘blue’ person or a ‘green’ person but they have taken this concept even further. Start by taking the personality test at www.inyourelements.com. This will help you decide which element you fall under. They have then organised their colours to compliment your personal likes. This will not only be carpets but also vinyls. It will provide options ranging from pricing and quality. This will make the choice of your base colours easier and more to your personal likes. And once you have the

base layer, your decorator can move forward with the rest of your living space. Remember, the right foundation will lead to the right finished product. We at Michele Fortune cc offer the full range of the Lifestyle Products and can help you get your project started off from the right base. We also offer tiling and wooden flooring for a difference in your homes. Please feel free to contact us at 083 461 6976 or 012 667 3787 if you need any help or advice on flooring or visit our showroom at 71 Jean Ave, Doringkloof.
