It’s been a month filled with busy days and the month ahead doesn’t seem to be any quieter! I’ve just sat down to arrange a get-together with friends we haven’t seen in a while and realised that our first available weekend is three weeks away! How did life become so hectic? One of my ‘to do’ list activities is a visit to the 25th Birthday celebratory Irene Village Market on Saturday, 31 May. Alongside this page is an archived advertisement used to promote the very first market back in 1989. Whilst this market has grown in leaps and bounds since it first started, it’s lovely to see that some things never change. The tea garden with live music, the handmade items at the stalls and yummy food to name a few. Happy Birthday Irene Village Market - we look forward to many more. Thanks to all the residents who took the time to respond to Ros’s call for help in spotting her beloved Pegleg. The sms’s, emails and phone calls received are testiment that our little magazine is well read and enjoyed by all. Ros was very excited to welcome him ‘home’ as you will read in her letter on page 6. We love to brag about past (and present) Irene residents who are actively making a change for the better and so I was very excited for Barbara Tanton when she sent me the article on page 23 about the 4040 new energy leaders. Barbara’s son, Mark has been selected as one of the members of this group (you may recall an article published last year with regards to Mark’s wind farm). Congratulations! To the residents who will be partaking in the upcoming Comrades Marathon, we wish you a good down run and a safe return to Irene. ‘Till next month

Pegleg returned! He visited! Yay. It was Good Friday (in more miraculous ways than one), 18 April. We were so over-the-garden-wall happy. Funnily enough, he was actually in the empty house of our neighbour’s little courtyard with his ‘wife’. Pegleg, as we have dubbed him since his loss of leg, was reluctant to come over to us in his normal fashion, so we made little balls of meat and tossed them onto the ground below his perch. He was on the gutter and looking a bit worse for wear and bedraggled. We wondered if it was age ... and don’t cherish the thought of that! We want him to stay forever young. Then he disappeared for a few days again, reappeared again a week later, on Friday the 25th. And so we put out his special bonemeal in his special coconut bowl and waited some more. But at least we are no longer sorrowed by the plaintive cry of the female, we hear their duet and hope to for some time to come. Will keep you posted. Of course this bowl of meat is visited by the raucous Redbilled Hornbill (now called the Green Hornbill - go figure) which we also love to bits. I have to admit though that we chase the unwanted Indian Minor away regularly. In fact, since our repetitive ‘chasing’ of this unwanted little wretch, we find our regular birds have also found the courage to chase these fast overtaking unwanted feathered aliens. I remember when they were only lurking in Durban-by-the-sea and a time when there were none in Irene, in fact nowhere to the north of say Pinetown. We were brought up in Hillcrest and there were certainly none there during my youth. So it has taken the Indian Minor a good 150 years to venture northwards. I best find out from my Zimbabwean cousins if they are as far north as them yet. And, if so, where? Kindest regards Ros Town Crier May 2014

Comrades Marathon 2014 The Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) launched its campaign for The 2014 Ultimate Human Race in Johannesburg on Thursday, 29 August 2013. The tough conditions that characterized the 2013 Ultimate Human Race served as a reality check to many Comrades Marathon runners that this is still one of the toughest endurance events in the world. This was the inspiration behind the 2014 campaign: ‘Hard Is What Makes It Great!’ South Africa’s top runners, sporting personalities, stakeholders and media joined in the celebratory launch of the nation’s best loved ultra-marathon for its 89th edition.

The CMA is all set for another amazing race, come Sunday, 1 June 2014. Being a ‘down-run’, the starting gun will fire off outside Pietermaritzburg’s City Hall at 05h30 and go off again 12 hours later at Durban’s Sahara-Kingsmead Cricket Stadium to signal the finish of the 89km road-running challenge.

Awesome news for those runners aiming for the top positions is that the overall 2014 Prize Money has been increased by a whopping 14%. The total prize money for the 2014 Comrades Marathon has increased to R3.159,000; up from R2.653,000. This means that this year’s Male and Female Winners will receive a first prize of R350,000 each as opposed to the R300,000 awarded last year. As part of its Amabeadibeadi Charity Drive, the CMA’s six official charities are the Community Chest of Durban and Pietermaritzburg, PinkDrive, The Sports Trust, Starfish-Greathearts Foundation, Wildlands Conservation Trust and World Vision South Africa. The charities’ focus are on issues of community development, care for the aged, health and wellness, AIDS care and support, the environment and sports development. Through the amazing Amabeadibeadi Charity initiative, they gain significant resources to effect the intended meaningful change to those needy communities across South Africa. Further to that, the CMA prides itself in giving the less fortunate athletes an opportunity to compete by putting the humanity into The Ultimate Human Race by making the dreams of approximately 800 disadvantaged runners a reality every year. For over a decade, the Underprivileged Runners Programme has provided resources and moral support to these runners who would normally be unable to compete in the world’s biggest and oldest ultra-marathon and join in the camaraderie and enjoyment associated with it. CMA Vice Chairman, Macdonald Chitja says: ‘It is with a great sense of pride and pleasure that we unveil our campaign for the 2014 Comrades Marathon. The 2013 race proved to be one of the most difficult races for our runners and the 2014 campaign speaks directly to that.’ Chitja adds, ‘As we direct our prime focus on the Comrades Marathon runner, we also make provisions for supporting the greater good of South Africa through the CMA’s Amabeadibeadi Charity Drive. We are grateful to our generous runners, sponsors, partners and supporters who contribute to the overall success of our charitable outreach. Dear Residents and ILA Members A special thank you to all the Villagers who attended the AGM on 21 May. As promised, we kept it short and we hope that we answered all your questions. What follows is a brief summary of the key issues discussed at the meeting and how we go forward in the year ahead. Security in Irene The primary purpose for the existence of the ILA is ensuring that the village provides a safe environment for all its residents and we believe that we have been very successful in achieving that objective over the course of the past year. Richard Schuster, one of the founding members of the ILA and a past chairman, reminded the meeting of where we’ve come from. When the ILA was established in 2000 the village was not a safe place to live. Crime levels were in the order of 70 incidents per month, including car hijackings and armed robberies, which unfortunately lead to more than one fatality. The picture in 2014 is completely different. There were a total of 35 incidents reported for the period June 2013 to May 2014. This compared to 128 incidents for the same period in the prior year and a similar number the year before. Crime is down by 73% year on year and this really is something to be celebrated. So how do we improve on 2014? The objective has to be zero crime! The crime we are seeing in Irene is now largely opportunistic in nature but the problem is that every incident has the potential to escalate. One incident where someone gets hurt is one too many and would destroy any sense of security that we have. The directors and our security providers are literally doing everything we can to secure the village. The nature of our environment is such that certain risks can only be managed at an individual property level. Any further improvement in our crime statistics it is going to require a concerted effort on the part of every resident. With this in mind we would ask the following:

1) Do a risk assessment for your home and property and address any weaknesses that you identify. A risk is anything which exposes you to potential loss, damage or harm. If you need assistance to do this Jan and Dawie would be happy to assist. 2) Avoid risky behaviour. This would include things like: leaving valuables in vehicles or on display close to open windows, not setting your alarm when you go out, leaving gates and garages unlocked etc. 3) Develop a security mind-set. As they used to say on police file – “keep ‘em peeled”. Rather be safe than sorry, call the control room if you have any concerns. Membership and Finances The success of the ILA is dependent on our membership for their financial contribution. Membership numbers are still a challenge. In spite of the successes achieved the membership is down from 80% last year to 77% currently. Of the 575 households in Irene, there are 116 non-members that reap the benefits without contributing. Non-members can be broadly divided into three groups: 1. Those that have an issue with the ILA and refuse to join. In the spirit of community we would encourage anyone in this group to contact the directors for a confidential discussion to see if we can resolve the issue. Mistakes get made, people are offended but let’s try and move on from that. 2. Residents who have a financial challenge affording the levy. Special arrangements can be made to assist. Please contact Alyson in this regard. 3. Free-loaders. All communities have them unfortunately. If you’re reading this and fall into this category we apologise if you are offended but some introspection would be appropriate. The finances of the ILA are in good shape but will it always be that way? The ILA is its members and we succeed or fail together. We need every member to continue to support the ILA and to challenge your non-member neighbours to do the right thing. The crime statistics speak for themselves, we are successful in offering good value for money and delivering on what the ILA was set up to achieve. The AGM approved a 5% increase in the levies across the board. This will allow us to pay for what is needed from an operational point of view and to replenish the reserves required to maintain the security infrastructure in the years ahead. The 2014 financial statements and the budget for 2015 as circulated by email before the AGM was presented and were approved by the meeting. 2015 – A focus on community All the serving directors accepted reappointment at the AGM, with the exception of Mr Andre Visser. We’d like to thank Andre for his efforts over more than 10 years as a director on ILA, his contribution has been invaluable. Mr Stephen Marshall accepted his nomination to join the directorate. Our theme for the year ahead is “Authentic Community”. Irene has a long history of “community” and we want to actively foster and promote that. What does “community” mean? One could look at the dictionary definition but in essence it’s about “doing life together”. We’re not all friends largely because we’ve never met. A strong safe community is one where people know one another. We know each other’s children and we look out for one another. An informal group including some of the ILA directors are driving initiatives in the village where residents can get to know one another, have some fun and make a difference in our community. The CPF is also an active part of this. There are going to be lots of opportunities to get involved and we’d encourage anyone who has ideas to join us. Facebook We would also like to remind you of the Facebook page, www.facebook.com/ irenevillage. A resident took the initiative on this and as the ILA we’ve given it our full support. Feel free to share anything of interest to the village but please refrain from using it as a complaints department. It’s also not the place to report crime or security concerns, the control room is still your first contact for that. His favourite pastimes are watching Hadedas, listening out for Bush Babies at sunset and playing hide-and-seek amongst the grasses and agapanthus plants. Cornwall Hill College Pipe Band

Any birth is at once both exciting and daunting and typically involves a lot of wailing. Nowhere have these characteristics been better displayed than with the birth and steady growth of Cornwall Hill College’s pipe band. Having been no more than an idea in 2011 when Paul Ross, the band leader, arrived as a new teacher at the school, the band started competing in earnest this year at various piping events. With many years as active piper under his belt Paul believed that the Cornish heritage of the school demanded a pipe band and he started engaging with pupils at the school to gauge interest and to start recruiting members of the band. The five founding members of the pipe band reflect laughingly at their first piping experience, when expecting to get straight into the bagpipes they encountered nothing more than a flute like piece of plastic known as a chanter. Their first basic notes had none of the musical power of the doodle sack in full cry and left them all with serious misgivings about having volunteered for the band. Moving from an infant to a toddler takes perseverance and the pipers continued to practice on their chanters, while a fledgling group of side drummers started learning their craft on a piece of wood with a roundel of rubber stuck on it. Again, none of the majesty of a taut side drum, just the promise of practice, practice and more practice. The seed at that stage was firmly planted though and chanters gave way to a few tentative notes on the real McCoy, while the drummers got some opportunities to test their mettle on borrowed drums.


21 The results have been astonishing and the wailing infant is now a teenager as the band has grown to 6 pipers, 3 side drummers, 1 tenor drummers and a bass drummer all resplendent in their Cornwall Tartan kilts, sporrans and brogues. The band now plays at events such as the 1st has competed at the Lyttleton Manor, Amanzimtoti and Celtic gatherings with promising and encouraging results. The Cornwall Hill College gathering will be held on Saturday, 28 June 2014. From 9 till late the hills will be alive with the sound of Bagpipes, while spectators listen to the bands compete they can also enjoy the Highland and Irish dancing, see the South African Guild for Medieval Combat Studies in action while enjoying the food and other stalls, beer garden, kiddiesTim area and much more. Donkin and Craig Herbst Few things stir the soul like a pipe band in full flight and the CHC band will no doubt continue to grow into its rightful place as a mainstay activity at CHC. Recharge announces 4040 new energy leaders May 12, 2014 15:39 BST

Recharge has today announced the final selection for its 4040 initiative, which will bring together young new-energy pioneers in a unique forum. The 40 are made up of a diverse group of individuals from across the globe, from the worlds of renewables technology, finance, development, social engagement and advocacy. The list includes people from major wind and solar companies, banks, investment funds, crowd-funding platforms and governments. “We were delighted to receive nominations from companies such as Google, Solar City, Vestas, Jinko, NRG Energy, DNV-GL and many others, and from everywhere from Brazil to South Africa to China,” says Recharge Editor-in-Chief Ben Backwell. “The really inspiring thing has been to see how many young people from a diverse range of backgrounds are in leadership positions in our sector,” he adds. The 40 were selected by Recharge after extensive consultation with the industry, after almost 100 people had been nominated. Full profiles of the 40 will be published on the Recharge4040 website and in a special edition of Recharge magazine in July. Over the coming months, Recharge4040 will carry out a series of activities to highlight the work and projects of the different members of the group. A fourperson committee of 4040 ambassadors will be set up to promote the initiative, leading to a high-profile networking event to be held on 2 October at a unique location.
