Living in peace
A community is defined as a social unit of any size that shares common values. And Irene certainly falls into that category. With loads of history and interesting stories to tell, some members of our community have generations of value added to our village so it was with excitement that I recently received an article from Lisle Caromba after her visit to the gardens of High Cloud. For those of you who have often walked past the property (through the golf course) and wondered what is behind the stone walls - Lisle has managed to give us a glimpse of the maganificent gardens inside. High Cloud must rank as one of South Africa’s most beautiful gardens. I hope that you find this feature of interest. Lisle says she was quite intimidated by the magazine space restrictions she was faced with photographs of this garden could easily fill a glossy coffee table book. To squash it into a page was impossible so you can see more pictures on the website www.tlgpublishing.co.za under Irene Town Crier, High Cloud. The recent rains have certainly made our village beautiful and perhaps some of the images captured by Lisle will inspire our many neighbours with green fingers. At the end of each year the Irene Association who manage our Village Hall host a Tea for our Senior Citizens . This year the Tea will be held in the Village Hall on Wednesday 26 November at 09H00. We rely on donations from our local community. We will be serving cocktails, tea, coffee and a delicious array of snacks . We are in need of hostesses to host a table of ten. All food is supplied by the committee, hosts just need to set a table for 10. We try and give each person (about 130) a gift to take home, normally a box of biscuits or a box of chocolates. We also need gifts for lucky draws eg : plants, biscuits, chocolates, sweets, gift vouchers etc. We appeal to the incredible generosity of the community to make this a very special day for these very special people. Crisis? What crisis?
I recently wrote an article about the state of our Hennops River but wanted to ensure that we remain informed of the issue and also that we are aware of how our lack of resolution impacts on those downstream of us, so am writing again. I want to be clear upfront that I am no expert and have no qualification in the assessment of this problem but have gleaned information from interviews with those who are, in addition to online research and attending meetings where information is on hand. I agree that we remain the “victims” of the pollution upstream, while contributing knowingly or unknowingly as the river flows through Centurion, but at some point there has to be a concerted, collective movement to change the tide. It is also easier to point a finger and say that it’s the informal settlements or industry that should carry the blame but the poor in this country do not have access to sanitation or, in many instances, education or awareness about the problem and the real danger it poses. The rich build on the wetlands alongside the rivers and contribute to the erosional activity of the riverbanks too so everyone is responsible and accountable but frankly, when you’re literally fighting to put bread on the table daily there’s little interest in the environment no matter how dire the consequence so it’s up to those who have bread on the table to care! The Hennops River is terrifying BUT according to an interview with Sibusisu Mabasa, City of Tshwane Director of Water, it is a diluted version of what we receive upstream from the Olifantspruit and Kaalspruit tributaries. These two wind through Ekhureleni and Johannesburg City Councils respectively and join the Hennops just outside of Irene. Mr Mabasa noted that a CSIR study in 2009 revealed a few common pathogens i.e. cholera and salmonella in these two rivers. The Hennops comes from Rietvlei, which is our drinking water resource and is therefore treated and cleaned, and as such dilutes the filth coming in upstream so what we see daily in the Hennops River is only a portion of the pollution going into the other rivers. This is an enormous crisis! Let’s review the identified causes of the pollution (ref. 702 interview with City of Tshwane Director of Water): -
Upstream litter, both garbage and dead animals etc.
-
Illegal dumping of garbage near to water resources and poor waste removal in low cost housing areas in Ekhureleni and Johannesburg.
-
Informal settlements with no access to sanitation dumping raw sewerage into the river.
-
Purposeful blocking of the sewerage system to sift through sewerage for valuables and to access water to irrigate their vegetables.
-
Destruction of our wetlands by developments that build along the rivers and force the water into the rivers rather than filtering through the wetlands that naturally clean the water.
-
Extreme delays by DWAF in declaring the issue an emergency and giving “permission” for our Tshwane Council to work on the problem.
-
A lack of political will to get Ekhureleni and Johannesburg City Councils to work with Tshwane City Council.
Think of the water being used to irrigate your fruit and vegetables. Think of the water that you rely on to come out of your taps clean to drink. Think of how you can make a difference whether financially or politically to change this lifethreatening scourge. What can you do? First, SMS “Hennops” to 45341 at a cost of R1 to add your name to a petition by AfriForum who are engaging in litigation on the issue. Next, consider making a donation to AfriForum to fund this cause. And then, place pressure on your political structures and tell everyone you can about what is happening to our water resources. Civil awareness and pressure are powerful tools when the topic is relevant to every living thing on Earth. As a little more motivation, see the images taken recently at a once idyllic spot downstream around Hennops River Valley near Hartebeesport. The filth and pollution in the river flows unabated downstream, destroying everything in its wake. The fish, some very good sized carp, are suffocating in the water. They are dying in large numbers. Dear Residents and ILA Members The December Festive Season is finally here and we are sure that many of you will be relieved to experience a bit of holiday time with family and friends or to have the chance to spend time away or just enjoy a slow wind down at the end of the year. Driving at this time can also be hazardous so please be careful on the roads should you be driving and come home safely to us after your holiday break. Criminals, sadly, never go on holiday so we’d like to give you a few pointers when heading off over this time to ensure that you and your homes remain safe and undisturbed. Protecting your perimeter The perimeter wall is your first line of defence. Should you have an electric fence on the wall, ensure that the system is maintained and in good working order. Stop intruders gaining access over your wall. This will stop criminals from getting into the property to tamper with doors and alarm systems. Your second line of defence can be outdoor beams - these are normally only used in conjunction with the alarm system when residents are at home. Lastly you should have a good alarm system with zones and an audible alarm. If you have an alarm system in your home, make sure it is working at all times. Test it regularly, especially after heavy storms, power disruptions and before you go on holiday. The system’s guarantee and your insurance cover may be compromised if your alarm system is found to be out of order at the time of the claim. Always switch on the alarm system when you leave home. If your alarm is not switched on at the time of an unforeseen break-in, an insurer can refuse your claim. Make your neighbour a friend If you have any friends in your street or neighbourhood that you can trust, give them a copy of your key and put their phone number on your list of emergency numbers. Advise your neighbours if you are going away and provide them with a contact number should they observe any unwanted activity at your home while away. If you are going away, please send EBS and the ILA your holiday dates,

Explain each emergency number to them and make sure that they know the best procedure for any crisis situation. Strangers can easily mislead children. Allocate a “trust word” and give this word to an adult as a form of password to let the children know that you gave them permission and that it is safe to trust the stranger in an emergency. Junk mail Try to ensure that your post box is cleared on a regular basis should you be going away so that your piled up mail does not make your unoccupied house a target to criminals. Pets Please ensure that you have made alternative accommodation arrangements for your pets if you’re not going to be at home or consider taking your pet with you on holiday. Lonely pets that escape or pets that get lost cannot be held by the ILA and will not be held at the EBS Security office at the Oval so will have to be taken to the local SPCA for safe keeping until claimed and costs will be incurred for the owner. Please ensure that your pets have a collar and ID or chip to assist us in returning your animals. If you have arranged for a pet sitter, please ensure that they have your pets’ vet contact details available and that they are advised what to do when a pet goes missing. Electricity Remember to turn off your stove, TV and your geyser – apart from the safety hazard it will save on your energy account. Recycling After unwrapping the mountains of gifts that are packaged in everything from paper and cardboard to plastic and polystyrene, please keep the paper items separate for collection by Ronnie Recycling or sign up with one of the wonderful recycling offerings we have available in the village. “What we do today, right now, will have an accumulated effect on all of our tomorrows” – Alexandra Stoddard

A visit to High Cloud... by Lisle Caromba Inheriting a vast and awe-inspiring, but sadly neglected garden would daunt anyone. But Michelle van der Byl is not anyone. She comes from a gardening family. Her mother, Gaynor Hildyard, worked for Keith Kirsten for many years, and has taught and inspired her daughter over the last 30 years. So Michelle took on High Cloud, a garden of about 6 acres (including the paddock), with zest and energy.
What makes High Cloud the envy of any gardener – is the trees. The van der Byl’s started farming in Irene in 1895 and the property boasts many mature and beautiful trees. Michelle has treated them with great respect. New trees are constantly being planted. In total some 300 have been planted over the last 18 years. Michelle has added her personal touch, with some blossom trees and a wonderful selection of Japanese maples. Their frothy foliage ranges from purple, to reds and oranges, to the freshest of lime greens.
Thus one walks in the garden from areas of dappled shade into sunlight, marvelling at the interplay between casual meadow areas to semi-formal Italian style focal points. From vast spreading trees which must have been the joy of their children’s lives, to secret spaces; which must have provided the children with many hours of hide and seek. I smilingly wondered whether hide and seek might have been forbidden – for the huge difficulty in finding children who did not want to be found! Michelle thinks big! She was inspired by a dear garden friend, Jan van Bergen, who envisioned the boldness and drama of two huge scale water features. These have matured, and become more restful and beautiful over time. Near the entrance of the house is a dam, with a sunken stone folly, which is enlivened by the antics of the resident ducks and swans. Further on, is a large pond, spanned by a classic arched stone bridge. This is the domain of the black swans, which I skirted with care, on my visit. On the hillock next to it, are three gigantic gum trees. Gums are nowadays scorned as water guzzlers, yet one can only stand in veneration before these huge trees, which seem to be straight out of a Tolkien novel!
Their peeling bark is a natural artwork. Placed between them is a large bronze: “The Rape of the Sabine Women�, the original of which is in Florence. From their home, the family has a lovely view of the rose garden. The planting is wonderfully naturalistic, with old fashioned flowers like hollyhocks and poppies allowed to ramble between the roses. The design of the rose garden is classic, with an arbour in the centre and statuary before it. The arbour is covered by a mixture of creepers. Wisteria gives early spring beauty, while star jasmine flowers through most of summer and provide some shade during winter.
Slowly one moves towards the woodland areas. In the sunlit areas, surely fairies dance between the joyful mix of English style flowers. Fox gloves, Giant Delphiniums, Cleome, Shirley Poppies and Iceland Poppies, Columbines, Penstemon, Arum Lilies.

Forget Me Nots self seed happily and Clematis rambles wherever it can. In denser shade, a sense of mystery and awe prevails. Here green dominates, with ivies and ferns. The dogs quieten, and poke their noses with caution. Statuary is all over, growing slowly more mossy over the years. I so admired the clever way she has disguised the “nuts and bolts” of a garden. One would never dream that a crumbling stone wall covered by creepers is in fact a water tank. One notices the gentle sound of water in the garden – but does not notice the pumps which keep the system going. They have been cleverly disguised as discreet focal points under stone. Even the compost area is attractive. I smiled at the way that old garden tools find a resting home in “the graveyard” garden. The family’s swimming pool has also been tucked away, into their private fun area. Michelle, I salute you!

The tale of the Irene Middle School library... It’s a classic tale of a community in need and a local volunteer who, through dedication, determination and a drive to do good, has improved the lives of our local children. When Luisa Wood of Irene, set out to find a project that would enable her to give back to the community two and half years ago, little did she know that her efforts would be so rewarding. On 3 September 2014, Irene Middle School officially opened their new school library. When Luisa first visited the school her intention was to find out what their needs were and how she could help. She soon discovered that although the school had a ‘library’, the dedicated room was being used as a storage facility! She rounded up some volunteers and together they managed to sort, clean, paint, decorate and fill the library with interesting books. Coupled with this, some of the regular volunteers (including Luisa) started reading with the children once a week to help the teachers boost the reading interest and skills in the school. Irene Middle School are clearly grateful to Luisa and all the volunteers who made this project a sucess as was seen at the opening ceremony. With thanks
