Living in peace

It’s a topic of much discussion and the Irene Town Crier is no exception. The constant complaints about speeding in our village are a dissappointment as one would expect that the educated, respectable drivers on our roads would be sensible enough to know the potential consequences of speeding... And it’s not just the pedestrians and animals in danger when one speeds. The driver and passengers in a vehicle are just as much at risk of injury or worse should a speeding vehicle crash. Please be vigilent and remind your visitors that our speed limit is 30 km/h in the village. On a happier note, the recent rain has resulted in our gardens coming to life. As this front cover depicts, and our You said it letter confirms, Spring is certainly in full swing. There are a few more events to add to the calander before the year is out such as the Senior’s tea, the Liqui Fruit Vitality Irene Road Race and the bird walk at the Smuts House Museum. There are also many Christmas markets for you to browse and stock up on your gifts. This time of year always calls for a good Spring clean, so please keep Barbara Tanton in mind when doing so as all your old toys in good condition will be most welcome. Barbara does an excellent job of distributing our unwanted toys to the children at Garankuwa Hospital every year making their Christmas a little more special. Till next month

Tracey Beloved , now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be , but we know that when He is revealed , we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. 1 John 3:2 Town Crier October 2013

An ernest cry out to please obey our road rule It’s there for your safety and not to be cruel Speed kills not only our wildlife and pets But our children and pedestrians lest not we forget Please take our plea to heart and ask visitors too Although the really wreckless ones are very few It only takes a split second to cause a fret Let’s not take the chance that could end in regret

New residents A pair of Dikkops flattered us some months ago by settling in our garden in Queen Street. Their distinctive nocturnal calling made a pleasant change. We were delighted, therefore, when the female produced an egg which, after 30 days of being diligently sat on and protected by both parents, hatched into a confident little chick. Below is a photo of the chick, aged one day, with its parents. Regards Richard Schuster

IRENE ASSOCIATION PO BOX 1 IRENE 0062

At the end of each year the Irene Association, who manage our Village Hall, host a Tea for our Senior Citizens. This year the Tea will be held in the Village Hall on Wednesday 27 November at 09H00. We rely on donations from our local community. We will be serving cocktails, tea, coffee and a delicious array of snacks. We are in need of hostesses to host a table of ten. All food is supplied by the committee, hosts just need to set a table for 10. We try and give each person (about 130) a gift to take home, normally a box of biscuits or a box of chocolates. We also need gifts for lucky draws eg. plants, biscuits, chocolates, sweets, gift vouchers, etc. We appeal to the incredible generosity of the community to make this a very special day for these very special people. Please contact Barbara Tanton on 082 899 2550 if you are able to assist financially or as a hostess. Our bank details are Irene Association, Standard Bank, Lyttelton, branch code 010945 account number 011719362. Receipts will be issued on request. Yours sincerely Barbara Tanton Chairperson Irene Association

It’s MOVEMBER time... During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of millions of moustaches around the world. With their “Mo’s” men raise vital funds and awareness for prostate and testicular cancer and mental health. As an independent global charity, Movember’s vision is to have an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health. HOW IT WORKS Movember challenges men to grow a moustache for the 30-days of November, thereby changing their appearance and the face of men’s health. In October, Mo Bros sign up at Movember.com, and on the 1st of Movember, with a clean-shaven face, start their Mo growing journey. Then for the entire month, these selfless and generous men known as Mo Bros, effectively become walking, talking billboards for 30 days. Through their growing efforts they raise awareness for the often ignored issues of men’s health, by prompting conversations wherever they go. Another crucial part of being a Mo Bro is to raise funds for men’s health. Men donate their face, and much like taking part in a run or a walk for charity, ask their family and friends to sponsor their efforts. Movember’s not just for men. The women of Movember, are known as Mo Sistas. They play a vital role in the success of Movember by supporting and encouraging the men in their life to get involved. Mo Sistas also get involved by signing up at Movember.com, and participate by raising funds and awareness themselves. Essentially, Mo Sistas do everything that Mo Bros do, without a Mo. At the end of the month, Mo Bros and Mo Sistas celebrate their Movember journey by throwing their own Movember parties or attending one of the official Gala Parties held around the world.

9 THE MOVEMBER EFFECT Movember supports world class men’s health programmes that combat prostate and testicular cancer and mental health challenges. These programmes, directed by the Movember Foundation, are focused on awareness and education, living with and beyond cancer, staying mentally healthy, living with and beyond mental illness and research to achieve our vision of an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health. MOVEMBER - A GLOBAL MOVEMENT Since its humble beginnings in 2003 in Melbourne, Australia, Movember has grown to become a truly global movement inspiring more than 3 Million Mo Bros and Mo Sistas to participate across 21 countries worldwide. In addition, Movember is aware of Mo Bros and Mo Sistas supporting the campaign and men’s health causes across the globe, from Moscow to Rio de Janeiro, and everywhere in between. In 2012, over 1.1 million Mo Bros and Mo Sistas around the world joined the movement, raising ZAR 1.2 billion. For more information go to http://za.movember.com.

Halloween FRIDAY, 1 NOVEMBER

6pm

Irene Hall

The Irene Association has kindly donated the use of the hall for a SPOOKTACULAR Halloween community event. We are hoping that people will get to meet and chat together while having some family fun! Instead paying for your own table, we will be placing out a few tables and whoever is interested in putting out decorations and making a Halloween table can do so. Please remember without each one of you getting involved in the Halloween tables, there will be very little for your kids to come and treat at! So, please come along and participate, even if you remember at the last minute come and place some sweets and a few decorations on the tables! (Don’t forget tablecloths!) We will be holding a Coolest Costume Parade and competition for kids of different age groups (Babies, ages1-3, ages 4-7 and ages 7-14) on the evening sponsored by Scrooge and Marleys, who will also be there selling exciting Halloween goodies! You are also welcome to wander around Irene that evening to see which homes are trick or treating! Please note we ask you not to park near the hall as it is dangerous for young children walking, please park a block away and walk down.

see you there! (Any enquires: amanda.comrie@gmail.com)

Dear Residents and ILA Members Summer is upon us, although a little rain would be most welcome as the weather heats up to scorching temperatures. Gardeners, walkers, joggers are all out and about enjoying the warmth in the secure knowledge that they live in a designated woonerf where speed limits are a very leisurely 30km/hr and pedestrians essentially have rights on the road. That is, until a speeding car tests their agility in getting onto a sidewalk or facing injury. Speeding remains a serious problem in the village with dogs and cats being injured or killed by speedsters on a regular basis. Unfortunately, our pets sometime escape the confines of their properties (and cats are free roaming at their peril), but these incidents could be avoided if vehicles travelled at the recommended speed limit in the village or at least just slowed down! There is also an increasing trend in Irene to completely ignore road traffic signs. We even had a recent incident where someone in a golf cart drove up to the King North boom and demanded to be let out against the flow of traffic! On being refused by the guard, the person simply got out and swiped the pad to open the boom and left the village. This is truly unfortunate behaviour! The use of golf carts and mini motorbikes on public roads is prohibited and yet we continually have residents driving these vehicles around Irene, including under-age children. Please respect all road users by prohibiting these children from using the roads in this way as they ignore traffic rules and could have a serious accident, not to mention the danger to animals etc. being run over. Security We have been blessed with a relatively peaceful period in our village and crime remains very low at the time of writing this report. There was an attempt to steal a Toyota 4x4 in Krige Lane, but the attempt was unsuccessful. We would like to remind our residents that Toyota Fortuna’s and Hilux 4x4’s are very popular with the criminal element. In addition, there was an attempted housebreaking in Nelmapius Road. The suspects fled in a VW Polo with a partial registration number “BC” or “BSF”. The upgrade of the electric fence is also progressing very well. The contractor is currently busy in Nelmapius Road and we anticipate that the re-wiring will

soon be complete. On completion, a number of private gates on the perimeter will need to be fitted with new contacts. Suitable arrangements will be made with each homeowner to provide access to the property for this purpose. EBS has advised that they are experiencing a large number of false alarms. We request that residents test their alarms once a week to ensure that the unit is fully operational. There are incidences where the alarm appears to be operational but only sends a panic signal and not an alarm signal. Always phone the Control Room before testing as we need to ensure that EBS responds to real emergencies and not testing operations. Lost animals The ILA is constantly being called upon to attend to missing or found animals. Found pets are often brought to The Oval. Please note that we have no facility to house pets and residents should rather contact the SPCA unless they are able to look after the pet until the owner is found. Leaving Irene? Residents are kindly requested to let Alyson or Jan know if they are planning to leave Irene or sell their home. It is important that with the upgrade and implementation of infrastructure and new technology, we encourage all new owners to support our security scheme. We still find that newcomers are unaware of the ILA and we would appreciate the contact details of new tenants or buyers. Membership Our services are only delivered due to our memberships support. Should you not currently be a member and would like to contribute toward the on-going security of our village, please contact Jan or Alyson. Contact numbers: Alyson Lea-Cox

GARANKUWA HOSPITAL CHRISTMAS 2013 Once again I am appealing to the people of Irene to collect toys that are in good condition for the children at George Mukarhi Hospital. For the past 27 years I have collected toys to give to the children on Christmas Day. This will be the only gift that the child will probably ever receive. Toys can be dropped off at 19 Bruce Road, Irene. Barbara Tanton

Nearly 60 years later… Irene Primary opens new swimming pool

Thanks to an extremely generous and anonymous donation, Irene Primary School finally has a brand new facility, a full 25m short course swimming pool. The new pool replaces the old pool built in 1959 which faithfully served many generations of Irene and (now) Doringkloof residents as well as former pupils with the first school gala taking place on 25 March 1959. The old pool cost the princely sum of £1903 and the school had held extensive fundraising efforts to afford this, namely, a cake-icing demonstration, a dance, jumble sale and a fete. How times (and costs) have changed.

The good times in the old pool

An aerial view of the old pool on the school grounds

The new pool was officially inaugurated on 4 October 2013 to the great excitement of the learners and staff of the school and in particular to Irene’s rapidly expanding and successful swimming team. The principal, Mr Brian Davis, inspired the next generation of swimmers with his speech during the inauguration ceremony.

Meet the team that made it happen: left to right: Mr Brian Davis (principal), Karin Hillhouse (coordinator of swimming), Wynand Viljoen (Head of Sport), Fabio Balducci (School governing body member) and Mr Tim Lane (Chair of School Governing Body)

Leading from the front, the two swimming captains Jonathan Horn and Jessica Smit dived into the pool followed by members of the league teams to the applause of the proud principal, staff and parents.

Now more of the younger children (grades 1-3) will have the opportunity to swim with much more shallow end space with the fabulous Learn to Swim programme offered at the school during the school day. Watch this spot as the new pool is bound to inspire the latest generation of Irene swimming league stars. Karen Hillhouse: Coordinator of Sports and Swimming

Irene Primary hockey is thriving: 5 provincial players in 2013 After two terms of hockey in the 2013 season, Irene Primary School has had a great season. Five players were selected to play for Gauteng North, U12 Girls: Tamera Heslop; U13 Girls: Jemma Jolly, Jamie Gopaul and Sindi Sithole; and U13 Boys: Conley Joseph. There was a wonderful turnout this season with more learners coming to learn and participate. A coaching clinic in the third term proved very successful and the children applied their new found skills very well. There were about 10 teams playing consistently across the age groups with enthusiastic players playing on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings – even our Grade 1 players participated. The U8 and U10 girls teams won most of their informal league matches. The results of the formal league played by the U12 and U13s did the school proud with the best results coming from the U12 boys coming second in their league. We hope that next season many more boys will join. The season culminated with the Inter-house hockey which proved a fierce battle between the four houses. This was followed by the much enjoyed learners vs parents games and braai. Lots of fun was had at both events with many parents struggling to keep up with their youngsters in the latter. Well done players and their wonderful coaches Kevin Matos, Karen Radley, Philip vd Walt, Dylan Casey, Alitser Fritz, Chad Uys and Praticia Ameida Alves. Chloe Treble: Hockey coordinator

Irene Primary School’s Samantha Buchan rides supreme The Village has a new Equestrian star! Samantha (Sammy) Buchan, a grade 7 pupil at Irene Primary and resident of Irene, has excelled in the Equestrian sport in 2013. She is the daughter of well-known residents Jonathan and Margie Buchan, the latter a Springbok springboard diver. Sammy has been riding for Irene Primary School since 2011. With her exceptional riding during the 4 shows she ensured that Irene won the small school’s league (schools with 1 rider) out of 17 schools competing in this category.

She rides Angie Lessing’s pony, Sumersby and had done very well during the year at all the Gauteng North qualifying shows. Samantha received Gauteng North school league colours for the following disciplines: Working Hunter, Equitation, Competition show jumping and 2‑phase show jumping. Samantha also received Gauteng North provincial colours for Show Jumping (90cm) from The Horse Society. She further competed at the Gauteng Finals show where she was placed 4th in both her jumping classes and earned her Gauteng colours for the A team. Samantha competed at the SANESA National Interschool competition for Gauteng and was placed 4th in her individual Competition show jumping class and as part of the Gauteng A team that was placed 1st. She came 8th in the individual 2‑phase show jumping class and contributed to the Gauteng A team that was placed 1st. Keep an eye on this talented rider!
