Living in peace

Wow, summer has arrived! What happened to spring? Now all we need is a bit of rain and our lovely Village will come to life... I’ve noticed a quiet stirring of activity amongst fellow residents during the past two weeks. Neighbours are enjoying working in their gardens, clearing out the winter doom and gloom, whilst others have taken the opportuinty to do some renovations/maintenance before the summer rains arrive. Hence the inclusion of the ILA rules for building contractors in this issue. Please note that these rules are there to ensure safety and security in our Village as well as the aesthetics of our surroundings. Although the Festive Season is a few months away, I’m feeling the ‘silly season’ madness starting already! Calendars are filling up quickly, weeks are passing by and all the lovely Christmas markets are here - begining with the Christmas Decor Expo at the Irene Village Hall from 1 - 3 October 2014. Be sure to pop in... This issue is filled with lovely events and activities to help you and your loved ones enjoy the warmer weather. A concert at Irene Homes, the IDS Wild West Show, SPCA Wag-a-walk and the Irene Primary School annual Moonlight Fun Run and Carnival. This is the third year that Irene Primary School have had their Carnival and it’s a wonderful event. Take the kids along to enjoy the rides whilst supporting your local school. We are so blessed to be living in a village where it is easy to take a breather when life gets busy. Take time out this month to walk around the Village, meet your neighbours and let the ambience of Irene remind you of how grateful we should be for every day of life. ‘Till next month

Dear Town Crier...

Around 1980 a door-to-door salesman came around Irene selling sets of crockery called The Presidential Collection. The sets consisted of dinner, side, soup, dessert plates, cups, saucers, salt and pepper sets, coffee and tea pots, large serving dishes, serviette rings, vegetable serving dishes - 8 of each which were available in either gold or silver. I still have three-quarters of my silver set. The salesman was enormously successful and in the months following his visit we knew of at least eight other families in Irene that had bought a set. We would like to sell the remainder of our set at R1 an item, price negotiable. Any takers? Cilla Taylor Tel: 012 667 4924, confplan@iafrica.com

At the end of each year the Irene Association who manage our Village Hall host a Tea for our Senior Citizens . This year the Tea will be held in the Village Hall on Wednesday 26 November at 09H00. We rely on donations from our local community. We will be serving cocktails, tea, coffee and a delicious array of snacks . We are in need of hostesses to host a table of ten. All food is supplied by the committee, hosts just need to set a table for 10. We try and give each person (about 130) a gift to take home, normally a box of biscuits or a box of chocolates. We also need gifts for lucky draws eg : plants, biscuits, chocolates, sweets, gift vouchers etc. We appeal to the incredible generosity of the community to make this a very special day for these very special people. Please contact Barbara Tanton on 0828992550 if you are able to assist financially or as a hostess. Our bank details are Irene Association, Standard Bank, Lyttelton, branch code 010945 account number 011719362. Receipts will be issued on request. Yours sincerely Barbara Tanton Chairperson Irene Association

“Earth laughs in flower ” Ralph Waldo Emerson I love that quote! Since I was little I always felt that flowers are nature’s expression of joy and affection. Working with flowers makes me happy, and I think that is communicated in my arrangements. We may think of flowers when wanting to send something to somebody special and when words fail us, a thoughtful bouquet can be an eloquent translator - but flowers can do far more than that. They are the glitter that finishes off a table at your dinner party, they add the differential touch to a show house, they make your clients and guests feel welcome and physically demonstrate your appreciation of beauty. For those who would rather spend a little more but have an arrangement last up to 6 months, I also offer the amazing long life roses and foliage. These natural wonders of nature come in a variety of a surprizing colours and allow us to be more conscientious environmentally. I’ve lived in Natal my whole life and recently relocated to Irene. I have decided to turn one of my favourite hobbies into a business: Madison Flowers delivers fresh, interesting arrangements for corporates, the hospitality industry and private homes in the Centurion area. Did you know that flowers are not just pretty faces, they really are eye candy for the soul. A scientific study done by Professor of psychology, Dr.Haviland-Jones proved that being exposed to the magic of flowers physically benefits humans. Instant rewards came in the form of lifted moods and the long-term participants reported feeling less depressed, anxious and agitated after receiving flowers. They even demonstrated a higher sense of enjoyment and life satisfaction. Flowers were also found to contribute to increased emotional bonds and connections between friends and family. I want to make beautiful arrangements accessible to everybody because I believe that flowers are such a large part of feeling happy and enhancing interiors. I would rather tailor my flower selection than say I can’t work within a clients’ budget. Simple blooms and creative supporting foliage and décor items can work as effectively as pricey exotic flowers. I’m enjoying meeting the friendly people of Centurion and hope that I can bring some beauty into your world too. Dear Residents and ILA Members Our village is on the verge of blooming into the gorgeous village that we know and love. Trees are budding and avid gardeners can be seen watering and planting up for another beautiful season. We live in a truly beautiful place! Irene has a rural ambience, is located close to good schools, shopping malls, medical care with easy access to highways and it is therefore unsurprising that it is a much sought after place to live and to raise a family. We appeal to our residents to strive to maintain the peaceful and rural character of our suburb and contribute to the safety of all. Here are a few suggestions that would help in achieving this goal. Security Irene is now known by Tshwane as IRENE SECURITY VILLAGE. The hard work of our committee (past and present) and the support of our membership have paid off! Security has improved, crime is down, property values enhanced and we are all reaping the benefits. The ILA, EBS and Irene CPF strive to safeguard residents from crime and other social ills. Please report any suspicious activity, illegal activity, noise disturbance or misuse of drugs and alcohol in our public spaces. These all negatively impact on our well-being. We must work together to keep our village safe! Membership Our membership stands at 78%. To sustain and further improve Irene’s security means we need 100% support. If you are not an ILA member, please give serious consideration to becoming a part of the community that is paying to keep our beautiful village safe. Your Village needs you! If something is holding you back, please tell us - call us for a chat and share your concerns. You may call Jan (Cell: 083 607 6600) at any time or meet privately with our Chairman, Jaco van der Westhuizen. We value your input and any suggestions you may have.

ILA Meetings

13

When things are going well attendance is low and when things go wrong we receive a flood of complaints! Without your involvement at meetings, we can only second-guess your thoughts. The directors have decided to hold open meetings every quarter or as required - open to members and non-members alike. Join us and share your ideas or concerns - as they say, ‘a problem shared is a problem solved’. Businesses Irene is a Residential 1 township and, therefore, only a business that falls in the category of a “home undertaking” is permitted. However, what may sound like a good plan for one may have a negative impact on others as well as the character of our suburb. Neighbours and the community at large have a right to either support or object to these activities. Businesses attract more traffic, increase sidewalk parking, increase the movement of people or may be deemed too noisy for a residential area. All those who run businesses or plan to run a business from home, are urged to ensure they have the necessary consent to operate in Irene. The Tshwane website: www.tshwane.gov.za provides information on home-based businesses as well as information on crèches, nursery schools, after care, B&B’s and letting of rooms etc. Selling & Letting Please be mindful of who you sell or rent your property to. Potential criminals increasingly buy in upmarket areas in order to conduct illegal activities. When buying, selling or letting a property, make use of registered and reputable estate or letting agents. To verify an agent, contact the Institute of Estate Agents of South Africa (IEASA) Tel: 012 804 8316 or visit www.ieasanorth.co.za for more information. Please do not sell a property with the promise that it can be re-zoned or used for business purposes. Irene is a Residential 1 suburb and no re-zoning will be granted in the foreseeable future. When renting out a property check your tenants’ credentials thoroughly. It is becoming more difficult and costly to evict unwanted tenants.

Building This is an issue that causes the most distress amongst our residents! Noise, trucks, weekend building, materials spilling in the road, workers sleeping on site, rubble left outside for months on end and, very often, concerns whether owners have the necessary approval or not - these are all issues residents worry about. Owners planning to carry out any building work are asked to be mindful of their neighbours and keep them informed of progress or delays etc. Please note our building guidelines printed in this issue – they are based on Tshwane bylaws. From a security point of view, residents can be assured that EBS regularly visits all building sites. In conclusion, your support in keeping Irene safe, law-abiding and helping to maintain its residential character will ensure that our village remains a desirable place to live and one that will provide you and your family with peace of mind, both now and in the future. Damage to Krige Lane Booms Krige Lane booms are once again being vandalised, seemingly due to road rage! We appeal to residents and visitors alike to respect the fact that Krige Lane is the one safe road where children, health enthusiasts and pedestrians can walk without fear of being struck by a fast moving vehicle. Your assistance in the preservation of this “safe zone would be appreciated. Once opened, please close the boom behind you. Residents are reminded that securing the booms with bolts will place our closure in jeopardy. Notices Please do not stick notices at the gates and booms for lost/found pets etc. The ILA is willing and able to distribute the information to 78% of the homes in the village. Please email ilamanager@irene.co.za. Visitors Procedures at the booms should be communicated to visitors to our village. Aggressive, dangerous and rude behaviour toward the security staff and infrastructure should be immediately reported to Jan at jan.swanepoel@irene. co.za. Please provide registration details and names where possible.

15

Overactive Alarms

There are homes in the village that experience alarm activation between 10 and 40 times per month! This unnecessary drain on EBS and the armed response unit impacts on our ability to respond timeously to real emergencies. Please ensure that any and all technical faults are resolved and that your beams are not set and activated by pets when you are not at home. In conclusion, your support in keeping Irene safe, law abiding and helping to maintain its residential character, will ensure that our village remains a desirable place to live and one that will provide you and your family with peace of mind both now and in the future. Wishing you a bountiful and safe Spring.

Quirky Irene by Lisle Caromba The first one is in Laurence Lane. It is, for the ignoramuses like me: a missile nose cone!

Second one: Just amazing. In Lotus Lane.

Number 3. Also in Lotus Lane. The little black Friesland cow in the corner, is iconic Irene.

Number 4. Not sure if this counts as quirky. But anything hand painted is unique and interesting.

Rietvlei Nature Reserve turned 85 years old on 2 September 2014 Some interesting information on Rietvlei Nature Reserve: The Munro family from England stayed on Rietvallei from 1925 to 1929. This was the northern section of the farm Rietvallei, on which the “Historic homestead” stands (The part that originally belonged to Stephanus Petrus Erasmus). It was bought by the government on 2 Sept 1929 as Rietvallei (Extent 1), from DM Munro, in order to build the Rietvlei Dam. When the City Council of Pretoria acquired the farm on 2 September 1929, it was not open to the public. The Rietvlei Nature Reserve was thus established on 2 September 1929. However, biological and infrastructural planning of the area went ahead and the game (67 blesbuck from General Jan Smuts’ nearby farm to the East) were introduced by Mr. A. Weyers in August 1938 (Fauna and Flora, 1950). This was done by chasing the animals from his farm, Doornkloof, onto the reserve with horses. Subsequently, a nature reserve was proclaimed. The reserve had a small heard of 12 springbuck and other small game species like oribi, grey duiker, steenbok, mountain reedbuck, etc. In 1935 the reserve, which covered an area of about 3 500 ha and was located at an altitude of 1 525 m above sea level, was known as the Rietvlei Reserve. In an Administrator’s Notice of 1937, the reserve was declared a game reserve and was subsequently known as the Rietvlei Game Reserve. Later, in terms of Administrator’s Notice 205, on 1 September 1948 it was proclaimed a reserve for indigenous flora and for the next six years it was called the Rietvlei Reserve for Game and Indigenous Flora. Certain areas of the reserve were lost or cut off from the rest because of newly built roads. Re-proclamation of the present nature reserve (west of the Delmas Road) as the Maria van Riebeeck Nature Reserve was published in the Provincial Gazette on 24 November 1954. In the 1980’s a portion of the farm Witkoppies was acquired by the Pretoria City Council to protect the water inflow and it was added to the Reserve. In 1992 the name was again changed back to the original and is today known as Rietvlei Nature Reserve.

How well do you know your village? So you think you know the village. Here’s a fun challenge for you. I will publish three photos taken inside the village fence, per month, June to Dec, with questions. All you have to do is answer them correctly. If you know the village as a result of long walks you may find some very easy, some on the other hand, will be extremely challenging and of course if it is your postbox or gate you will be one step ahead of the pack. If you think you know the answers or can hunt them down, send your results to me in an e-mail and I will let you know how you did. My address: peter@iconc.com. The full results will be published in February 2015 with the names of those individuals who got them all correct or came close. Good luck! Peter

Be Heart Healthy in September by Lauren Sackett, Registered Dietician

With spring in full swing, more sunshine, warmer weather and longer days are upon us, along with the familiar scent of the braai wafting in the air. Braais will be the heart of Heritage Day this month and with September being Heart Health Month, it’s a great chance to make our braai not only mouth-watering, but healthy as well. Here are my top tips for a heart healthy braai: 1. Pick healthy fats: Fats are often named the bad guy, saturated fats can worsen cholesterol and heart disease risk but poly and monounsaturated fats offer great health benefits. These are found in oily fish (trout, salmon, mackerel, sardines and tuna), avocado, olive oil and nuts. Try switch up the regular chop braai for a fish braai, make marinades with olive oil instead of butter or sunflower oil and swop creamy dips for guacamole or fat free cottage cheese. 2. Choose meats wisely: Avoid fatty cuts of meats like ribs, chops and sausages like boerewors. Rather choose lean cuts like fillet and sirloin and white meats, trimming of excess fat and skin. Keep red meat for twice a week. Very lean, low cholesterol game meats like ostrich are a great alternative to beef and lamb. 3. Don’t go hungry: Ever heard of the eyes are bigger than the stomach? Going to a braai already hungry will almost always lead to overeating and over-indulging. Make sure you have regular meals that day and try snacking on fruit, a yoghurt, lean biltong or some avocado before you leave. 4. Veg out: Packing a big nutritional bang for a few kilojoules, veggies are so versatile to use, from roasted to salads and raw. Make ½ your plate veggie rich. Full of fibre, they will help fill you up as well as cutting your heart disease risk. Make use of interesting salads and ingredients like strawberries and apple along with a green salad or pineapple in a carrot salad. Roughly chop veggies to cook in a pan over the fire. Make skewers to change up the way you eat your vegetables. 5. Un-refined carbs: Research has shown that refined carbohydrates can increase cholesterol more than saturated fats. So change starches to wholegrain products, like brown rice, whole wheat pasta and couscous, barley, baby potatoes with the skin, mealies, oats, bran, low GI seed bread to name a few. Wholegrains have minerals and fibre that refined foods lack, these help keep the body, heart and digestion happy and healthy. For the braai swop the mealie pap for corn-on-thecob with tomato relish, baby potatoes and whole wheat couscous salads. 6. Portion sizes: Portion distortion is a reality in this day and age leading to excess energy intake resulting in weight gain. Work on the general rule that vegetables

25

and salads should make up half your plate, proteins a quarter and starches the remaining quarter.

7. Cut the salt: Salt or sodium increases blood pressure if eaten in excess, increasing heart disease risk. Instant sauces, soup powders, Aromat, spice mixes are all high in sodium. Replace these with homemade sauces and marinades using olive oil, pepper, balsamic vinegar or lemon juice, garlic, onion and herbs. 8. Moderate is key: If drinking, drink in moderation as drinks are an easy way to add extra kilojoules to meals without even trying. Opt for sugar free mixers like soda water, light beers and wine spritzers. Add lots of ice and have a glass of water between each alcoholic drink. Red wine is rich in anti-oxidants such as resveratrol, which are inflammation and chronic disease fighting. Drinking in moderation means 1 drink for women and 2 drinks for men- 340ml beer, 125ml wine, 1 tot spirits. 9. Fabulous fibre: Fibre found in fruits, vegetables and wholegrains improves cholesterol, blood pressure and risk for diabetes. Include fibre rich lentils or chickpeas in salads, keep skins on potatoes and use homemade popcorn as a snack in place of crisps. Choose whole grain products like low GI seed bread, bulgar wheat, provitas, brown rice, and whole wheat pasta and couscous. 10. Sweet side: Opt for fresh and light desserts to suit the warm spring evenings. Try fresh fruit salad with plain yoghurt and mint. Low fat frozen yoghurt or sorbet instead of ice cream, to reduce saturated fat intake. Make use of the braai to grill pineapple or banana to bring out the natural sweetness without adding extra

Halloween It’s that fun time of the year again - HALLOWEEN! Last year was a fantastic success and so we are looking to organising another fun community event this year. The Irene Association has kindly donated the use of the Village Hall again. We are asking if the members of the community who normally participate in Halloween and decorate their houses would rather come and decorate a trestle table with their own Halloween things and put out candy for the kids. This way the kids can safely walk around and have fun seeing all the different tables! Last year we had a wonderful response and hope for even more participation this year. We would love you to book a table, decorate it and put out some sweets for the kids. If you are interested please email me on amanda.comrie@gmail.com. We can only fit in 20 tables so book fast! If you can’t book a table then please support us with sweets donations. Those who are doing the tables go to great expense to make it fun for the kids and would really appreciate some extra candy to make sure all our kids get a treat or two! Bring your donations on the night or email me and I will organise where to drop them off. We will be holding a Best Costume competition for different age groups on the evening sponsored by Scrooge and Marleys who will also be there selling exciting Halloween goodies. So please join us in this community activity: Friday 31 October 2014 18h00 – 19h30 Irene Village Hall Please note we ask you not to park near the hall as it is dangerous for young children walking, please park a block away and walk down.
