AND THAT SAYS IT ALL! With a great start to the first quarter of the year, Woodhill Residential Estate and Country Club is soaking up all that 2018 has to offer. From enticing golfing specials to fabulous resident evenings, the clubhouse is always on hand to welcome golfers and residents alike – one of the many reasons you chose to live on this wonderful estate. In this our first issue for the year, we meet the new Golf Director, Rosh, we get to know a little more about Summit on Site’s function offerings with Laetitia and we learn about how our Course Superintendent, Hugo, is maintaining the Poa grass on our greens. We feature Monate Game Lodge who so generously sponsored the prize for the Facebook competition which took place late last year and we meander a little through the Magaliesberg. Both are fantastic

options for a quick weekend getaway which we are sure all of you well deserve. Women’s golf is a growing trend and so a feature on the First Lady of the golf course, Sally Field is apt for this issue. The Battle of the Sexes editorial gives us more insight into why women should and are not only taking up, but loving the game. Whether your idea of exercise is the relaxation of yoga or getting your heart rate rising, we explore both regimes in this issue. With people being more aware than ever of their surrounds, health and wellness, it’s become important to find what your body loves best. A few added extras of text lingo for us ‘oldies’, birding and Fibre to the Home, we do hope you enjoy reading through this issue. It’s great to be back in your homes via Woodhill Magazine and we look forward to more exciting issues ahead. ‘Till next time

The Woodhill Golf Course greens work! Even with the high percentage of Poa Annua growing, our greenkeeping team manages it to perfection. In an article posted on www.grounds-mag.com, Dr David R Huff is quoted as writing: I once overheard a turf professional say to another, “Our bentgrass-management techniques must be good for Poa, because all we have is Poa.”

Although considered a pest, most greens at Woodhill consist more of Poa Annua than Bentgrass and we are continuously working towards making sure the strains of this species that have excellent properties for greens use are cultivated. Being a very different species to Bentgrass and without a uniform supply of the strain that we could call ‘greens-type’, our greenkeeping experience is all we really have to ensure the Poa on our greens is managed properly. Often treated as a weed, Poa is defined as a widespread low-growing turfgrass in temperate climates. As mentioned before, we can find many different strains of Poa on one green giving it a patchy appearance if not managed properly. With Woodhill already being nearly 20 years old, our green-type Poa has adapted over the years as a result of close cutting. The success of our Poa management at Woodhill has resulted in greens that are uniform in appearance and playability. The Poa produces very few seed heads as growth regulators are used and are an essential part of the maintenance program. Poa seed heads can detract greatly form puttingsurface quality. Fungicides are applied for disease and the greens are aerated as well as dusted as often as possible.

MOW, MOW, MOW… Part of the maintenance of Poa at Woodhill is mowing. Being the strongest selective factor on a green, our Poa seems to have adapted to the mowing height of our greens. The Poa isn’t growing vertically much above the height of the cut. FERTILITY… Liquid fertilizer is primarily used on our greens. Small granular fertilizers routinely leave ‘freckles’ on the Poa. IRRIGATION… Light, frequent applications seem to work best on our shallow-rooted Poa. Maintaining our Poa greens at Woodhill is a rewarding challenge for our greenkeeping staff. Our aim is to maximise the quality of the existing Poa on our greens, making the golfers experience an excellent one. Poa is our friend, for now… Hugo van den Berg Course Superintendent

I would like to thank our Turf consultant, Johan Jansen van Vuuren in helping to compile this article.

HAVE YOU MET ROSH? After achieving his PGA Diploma, Rosh headed for Kloof Country Club in Durban where he taught many a golf lesson. From there he moved on to Durban Country Club, again giving lessons as well as running the pro shop.

Recently appointed Woodhill Country Club Golf Director, Rosh Schoeman is no stranger to the Estate! Having moved in when he was just 12 years old, Rosh not only enjoyed playing the course from time-to-time including the odd 9 holes at the end of school day, but he also got to experience the secure lifestyle which bought about a sense of freedom during his teenage years.

10 | WH | ISSUE 1 | 2018

Once their kids arrived, Rosh and his wife, Janique, decided that a move back to Pretoria, where his parents still enjoy the Woodhill life, would be best. The support system far greater outweighed raising their family so far away. Rosh joined The Pro Shop where he got to know many of the golf clubs and their shops over two and a half years as he worked closely with each one ensuring their shops were well stocked with the best brands. He then took up a management position at the Golfers Club store in Menlyn Retail Park before moving back to his roots as Golf Director of Woodhill Country Club. Having played many rounds of golf and knowing the retail industry behind the scenes for so long, it’s safe to say Rosh is a golfing guru! His background has also allowed him

the opportunity to already know many of the members of Woodhill Country Club, adding a personal touch to the club experience. With little extras like a weather update, personal greetings and getting to know the group regulars, Rosh hopes that all members will feel right at home. His short term projects include the re-construction of the greens on the Driving Range and upscaling all the caddies to A-grade. In addition to this, he is continuing with the caddy training sessions and is looking to change things around in the pro shop a little to make for a better shopping experience. Rosh comments on the great condition of the course, thanks to Hugo and his team. He hopes to entice more kids into the game, welcome more lady golf members and create a vibrant club for all to enjoy. So, if you spot Rosh running around the club or you have a moment to spare, be sure to introduce yourself – he’s looking forward to providing many successful rounds of golf for years to come… Golf Director, Rosh Schoeman

BATTLE OF THE SEXES

WH | FEATURE

Golf is one of the few sports where brute strength doesn’t automatically put men in a league of their own. And, for that and many other reasons, more women are taking up the sport. Here’s why they should be encouraged... With the global economy under pressure, most business sectors are trying new ideas, changing old thinking styles and looking to new consumers to buy into their product. And golf is no different. The consumer target? Women.

Last year, the PGA of America launched an industry-wide initiative to get more women into the game - only 19% of golfers are currently women, says the American National Golf Foundation. In the book Why She Buys: The new strategy for reaching the world’s most powerful consumers, author Bridget Brennan says women should love golf - at least theoretically. “The sport requires finesse instead of brute strength; it’s social; it’s played in some of the most beautiful settings on earth; it’s co-ed; the fashion is great; and cocktails and conversation await the end of every game. (But more women aren’t playing because) they don’t feel

welcome. They haven’t been invited.” But women are the world’s most powerful consumers, and are key to the next generation of golfers, she says. WHY WOMEN? In a massive study by Boston Consulting Group, 90million people worldwide expressed an interest in taking up golf - and 42% of them were women. That means there are 38million potential new golf customers out there, who aren’t being directly catered to at the moment. And in all sectors, women represent the largest market in the world. Globally, they control $20 trillion in annual consumer spending.

Furthermore, women aren’t only the biggest spenders, but are quickly catching up to men when it comes to earning - 51% of managerial positions are held by women. Women are also graduating with degrees at every level of higher education at an increasing rate, out-pacing men - 56% of college graduates are now women. Globally, 1billion women are a part of the work force, and their incomes are rising at 8.1% versus men’s 5.8%. That’s a massive untapped market that will only get bigger in the years to come. CHANGE AT HAND But the scene is changing. Golf courses

are catching on and providing more social opportunities that appeal to both genders, such as ‘nine and dine’ offers (nine holes followed by dinner) or sixhole challenges geared more toward players of all ages and genders who want to have a fun outing instead of the traditional male-oriented and timeconsuming 18 holes. And women are inching themselves into the men’s games. In 2003, Annika Sorenstam became the first woman to play in a PGATour event since 1945. Then, in 2006, Michelle Wie made the cut for the Asian Tour SK Telecom Open - her first successful attempt after 13 fails.

While women may lag behind men when it comes to the power shots, many experts agree that they often make up for it with their short game - where women often play as well or even better than their male pro counterparts. There is, however, no gender battle for the top spot. Most women, it seems, are happy to play in a league of their own, as long as that league and its supporting businesses caters specifically to them. Since the amount of female annual consumer spending is expected to rise to $28 trillion in the next five years, any golf business will do well to sit up and listen. FIRST LADY OF THE GOLF COURSE Born in Cape Town in 1951, Sally Little started her love for the golf course by earning pocket money caddying for her father, Percy. At 12 years old she decided to take the game of golf on and she hasn’t looked back since… Maturing quickly in the game, Sally had claimed more than a dozen regional and national amateur titles by the time she was 17. In 1971 she was the low individual in the World Amateur and won the South African Match Play as well as Stroke Play titles all in one week! Playing in her first professional event in the United States, Sally finished fifth in the amateur group of the Lady Carling Open. It was then that Sally Little decided to turn professional.

20 | WH | ISSUE 1 | 2018

1971 Sally qualified to play on the LPGA tour (after playing in only 7 events) and is named LPGA Rookie of the Year.

After a successful 30 year career on the LPGA Tour, Sally wasn’t finished yet!

1976 Her first victory on the LPGA tour at the Women’s International held in Moss Creek.

2000 She joins a group of her peers and founds The Legend’s Tour (the women’s senior division of the LPGA Tour). She’s competed in as many events as her schedule allows.

In a spectacular finish Sally holed a 75 ft bunker shot on the 72nd hole to edge out Jan Stephenson by one shot. 1979 to 1982 Sally wins 12 titles including her first major win, the LPGA Championship in 1980. Consistently ranked in the top 5 in the world, Sally wins 2 major championships during this time, the last being the Du Maurier, the Canadian Women’s Championship, in 1988.

2014/15 She’s named Captain of the World Team vs the United States in the Handa Cup competition. 2005 Sally’s interest in golf course design is utilised when she’s asked to consult with Kingswood Golf Estate, her signature course, located on the Garden Route. A female’s perspective integrated into a male master plan.

namaste Growing in popularity over the past few years, many people have found yoga to be beneficial in many facets of their lives, whether it be for physical, mental or spiritual reasons. With historical origins in ancient Indian philosophy, the yoga community grew rapidly in the West towards the end of the 19th century. Derived from the Sanskrit root ‘’yuj’’ meaning to yoke or join together, i.e. the union of the mind and body incorporating breath, there are many styles

26 | WH | ISSUE 1 | 2018

of yoga practiced today. With various styles combining physical postures, breathing techniques, relaxation and meditation, some styles are more dynamic whilst others are more subtle. Hatha yoga is the most frequently practiced in the western culture – ‘’Ha’’ meaning sun and ‘’tha’’ meaning moon, hence masculine and feminine. This style is a gentle introduction to the basic postures of yoga allowing even the most novice of yogis to enjoy it. With the ultimate goal of attaining tranquillity in the mind and spirit, profound

changes take place within the physical body as the movement of physical postures are done with a focus on the breath. Releasing blockages and pent up stress, yoga brings about a sense of freedom and lightness. And you don’t have to be the most subtle, flexible person on the block to give it a go! Yoga is for everyone, regardless of age, infirmity and inflexibility. “Yoga is not a religion. Yoga is a science, science of wellbeing, science of youthfulness, science of inter grating mind, body and soul” - Amit Ray.

PRETTY & PRIVATE

WH | HOME

We use curtains and blinds to make a space warm and cosy as well as to make the space more private and intimate. There are various types of linings that we can use from sunrise to sunset and midnight, depending on your requirements. To help with the cold, we can also line the curtains either permanently or with a detachable interlining (almost like a blanket). What is the difference between curtains, roman blinds, shades and blinds? CURTAINS Curtains are fabric panels that are often sold in pairs and they hang from a rod. Curtains are very versatile - you’ll find a wide range of lengths, widths, fabrics, patterns, as well as various colours. The shorter curtains that are used in bathrooms and kitchens are called ‘Cafe curtains’. Bedroom curtains are made of lightweight fabrics, which makes them very light and they don’t keep the sunlight blocked out. Therefore, it is better to use blinds or shades at the back of the curtains, which also helps the colour or pattern of the curtains to ‘pop’. It is always good to use a colourful curtain or one with a pattern to add a pinch of contrast to your bedroom or living room space. Sheer curtains add softness and femininity to a room. DRAPES Drapes are fabric panels that are often sold in pairs, just like curtains. Drapes are lined with fabric that is heavy enough to block out light from outside, which makes them

good for bedroom use. They help for when you are, for instance, working night shifts and need to sleep during the day. Drapes are long enough to reach the top of the window to the bottom of the floor and hang from a rod on rings, hooks, or fabric sleeve at the top or back of the panel. The materials used for drapes are heavy somewhat stiff fabrics, which include luxury materials such as velvet, silk and damask, and they are more often solid colours than patterned. FABRIC OR ROMAN BLINDS A roman blind is a soft fabric panel attached to a rod or frame at the upper edge and is normally sold individually. It fits within the window frame. To let light in, you can raise the shade using a cord, roller or lifting mechanism which is inexpensive. There are various types of styles for shades and they can be used together with a curtain for colour or patterns. BLINDS Blinds are not a solid length of fabric. They are usually made of wood, bamboo, aluminium or vinyl slots, which are also known as louvers and they are tilted to let light in. By using a roller or lifting mechanism, the blinds can be lifted up or down. It is not necessary to lift them up unless the window needs to be opened or closed. The length and width are sized to fit within the window frame and they come in various colours and woods, and not in patterned fabrics. Blinds block out the light from outside effectively therefore they are a good choice for bedroom use.

DIFFERENT KINDS OF CURTAIN HEADERS Pinch pleat Pinch pleat curtains are curtains that have the pleats sewn into the top of them. They come as either double or triple pleated curtains and can be used on a track system, or on a rod or pole with rings (they both use the same hooks). Pinch pleat curtains normally hang on a track or rod with rings. Wave curtain A wave curtain is a neat and stylish curtain heading system that is created through combining a specially designed heading tape and wave glider cord to get a soft and simple continuous wave effect. This is a very simple and modern sleek look. Pencil pleat A pencil pleat curtain is a traditional heading for curtains and valances. Tape is used with three hook positions to suit all types of track and pole. The curtains are gathered to the required width. Eyelet curtain An eyelet curtain is a contemporary curtain heading for use with curtain poles. It gives large, even, soft pleats and are so called because they have metal rings at the top of the curtain in place of a normal header top. If you need any curtaining please feel free to contact us for advice. Keep decorating Michele

WHATEVER GETS YOUR HEART RATE RISING!

CARDIO It’s the buzzword of exercise that we’ve been hearing about for years but why exactly is it so good for us? Let’s break it down:

Your heart is a muscle. Making it work makes it stronger. A stronger heart = a stronger cardio-vascular system = more capillaries delivering more oxygen to the cells in your muscles. So, ‘cardio’ is large muscle movement over a sustained period of time keeping your heart rate to at least 50% of its maximum level – mission complete! How would you know what 50% of your maximum heart rate level is? There are various on-line tools and some medical aids have tables available where you can determine what your heart rate should be during your cardio session in order to obtain the maximum cardio workout. The American Heart Association recommends the following: For overall cardiovascular health at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity cardo at least 5 days a week or at least 25 minutes of vigorous cardio activity at least 3 days a week. Alternatively, you could do a combination of the 2 and moderate to high-intensity musclestrengthening activity at least 2 days a week for additional health benefits. If you’re having

32 | WH | ISSUE 1 | 2018

trouble talking during your workout, you’re pushing it too hard and if you’re having no trouble talking, you need to speed it up – it’s all about finding the balance. Ok, so how do you track your heart rate? There are various devices on the market that you can use to track your heart rate during your cardio workout. From fitness watches to heart rate monitors strapped to your waist, it’s pretty easy to get hold of the equipment needed. Right, you’ve determined your heart rate goal during your cardio workout and you have your heart rate monitor sorted, now to decide exactly what cardio busting exercise works best for you! Some of the best cardio workouts include: • Walking – the easiest and safest way to get started. • Elliptical – minimal impact on the knees and hips, available at most gyms. • Running – whether it’s distance or sprint, running gets your heart pumping. • High intensity interval training – short intervals at maximum intensity followed by short periods of rest. • Cycling – indoors or out, this one can double up as family fun (kids love racing mom and dad). • Stair climber – more intense than walking as you use more muscles. • Skipping – exhausting as an adult! • Swimming – different strokes whilst completing your laps. • Rowing – low stress on the joints and

ligaments whilst working both the upper and lower body. Circuit training – a high intensity workout.

And why exactly should cardio become a part of your weekly routine? • Weight loss – the number one goal why most of us taking up exercise. • A stronger heart – who doesn’t want their heart to work more efficiently? • Lower blood pressure and cholesterol – those 2 dreaded tests we do bi annually. • Increased bone density – decreasing the risk of osteoporosis. • Reduced stress and depression – endorphins are a natural pain killer. • Better sleep – tired body = better rest. • Maintaining muscle strength into old age – keeping us independent longer. • More energy – increased stamina and less fatigue. • Reduces the risk of heart disease – need we say more? • Strengthens lungs – better lung function. • Live longer – who wants to die young? • Less likely to get ill – your immune system is activated. But you can’t just jump off the couch and run a marathon! Please check with your health care professional on your limitations, if any, and start slow increasing your time and intensity as your body gets used to the idea of going cardio… Become a part of the cardio revolution – your heart will thank you later!

THE NEED FOR SPEED! Anyone else remember the days some 15 years ago when highspeed broadband access had just come onto the market replacing the then very slow dial-up option? Wow, we could suddenly download a song in 10 minutes! What once was considered a luxury has now become an essential part of life! Faster, more reliable, blink our eyes and we have what we want at our fingertips… Not only has it reached our computers, but our phones, iPads and televisions too. One has to wonder, how much faster can our internet connections get! At Woodhill we are fortunate enough to

have access to Fibre to the Home (FTTH). The installation and use of optical fibre from a central point directly to our homes, the clubhouse and security room provides us with unprecedented high-speed internet access. It’s the ‘gold standard’ of internet connections. Superfast speeds and enough bandwidth to get loads of gadgets online at once – it’s heaven for any large household. Computers, iPads, phones, televisions and anything else using data will thank you when they can be used uninterrupted. Not to mention the users themselves! For the businessman its downloading files in a fraction of the time, for the teenager it’s watching a video without it buffering

and for other members of the household it’s streaming their favourite TV series whenever they want. Although it’s not a necessity, FTTH is highly recommended if you have three or more people in your household, you have loads of gadgets connected to the internet, you like streaming movies/series, you’re a gamer and you work from home. That pretty much applies to every household with access to FTTH! So folks, FTTH is a must for most. And right now it’s the best on market. But who knows what developments are still coming… Fast forward 15 years and your kids will be probably be chatting about the internet when FTTH was the best there was!

WH | BIRDING

WHEN WE NO LONGER SEE THEM FLY! The 2015 Eskom Red Data Book of Birds identifies 10 critically endangered bird species in South Africa. Mankind’s impact on the environment reaches for the sky as we take a closer look at why these birds are under threat. 1. Tristan Albatross (globally critically endangered) Occasionally spotted off the west coast, threats to these birds include plastic and South African fisheries. 2. Wattled Crane (regionally critically endangered) Found in the eastern grasslands with the core population located in the KwaZuluNatal Midlands, a few pairs can also be found in the grasslands of northern Eastern Cape and the Highveld grasslands of Mpumalanga and the eastern Free State. The threat to these birds is the loss and degeneration of wetlands due to agriculture, forestry and mining. 3. Southern Banded Snake Eagle (regionally critically endangered) With habitat loss due to forestry,

agriculture and tourist developments, this species is found in northern KwaZulu-Natal. 4. Taita Falcon (regionally critically endangered) Restricted to the Drakensberg escarpment in Mpumalanga and Limpopo, the threat to them is the transformation of productive woodlands into open habitat. 5. White-winged Flufftail (regionally critically endangered) With the loss of wetland habitat due to mining activities, erosion and the construction of dams, this species can be found at two sites in KwaZulu-Natal, four sites in northern-eastern Free State and two sites in eastern Mpumalanga. 6. Leach’s storm petrel (regionally critically endangered) With only two confirmed breeding locations in South Africa including Dassen and Dyer islands, this species is under threat from avian predators, domestic cats and disturbance of breeding sites due to tourism. 7. Crozet shag (regionally critically endangered) Found on Prince Edward and Marion islands, they have poor breeding success, reduced food availability and are threatened by Antarctic fur seals.

8. Blue swallow (regionally critically endangered) Threatened by forestry, the invasion of alien eucalyptus, pine and wattle trees as well as inappropriate farming methods, this species is restricted to grasslands in the eastern escarpment, Ixopo district in KwaZulu Natal. 9. Damara tern (regionally critically endangered) Found at the Alexandria dune fields east of Port Elizabeth, this species battles off-road vehicle disturbance causing direct fatalities due to crushed eggs and chicks. 10. Bearded vulture (regionally critically endangered) Poisoning, collision with power-lines and a reduction in food supply have culminated in this species being under threat. Found along the Drakensberg escarpment of eastern KwaZulu-Natal as well as the north-eastern Eastern Cape and north-eastern Free State. Avid bird watchers could plan a rather interesting road trip around South Africa in pursuit of catching a glimpse of these endangered birds. In the meantime, we should all probably do a little bit more for our immediate environment in the hopes that one day not all our bird species will be under threat.
