and creativity brought it all together. I didn’t realize it at the time, but at that very moment the well laid career plans I had made for my life would be thrown out the window to make way for my love for weddings. Fast forward many years, and while my passion for weddings has never changed, my career path in the wedding industry certainly has. I was lucky enough to meet and marry someone who is just as crazy about weddings and events as I am, and after planning hundreds of destination weddings together, we founded Aisle Planner in 2013 to fill a need for online planning and business management tools for wedding professionals. In 2017, we launched The Aisle Guide as an online wedding magazine and planning resource to inspire couples and showcase our community of talented wedding pros. While we’ve come a long way over the years, I’ll never forget how this journey started—with a magazine and the excitement sparked from its pages. This year, The Aisle Guide turns five and we couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate than to bring our online magazine to life in a print publication filled with beautiful weddings and helpful planning advice from our community of wedding pros. I’ll never forget the first stack of wedding magazines I brought home. I was young, single, and despite the fact that I had never planned a wedding before, I had agreed to help a friend plan her destination wedding in Hawaii. I cleaned out our local bookstore of all wedding magazines on the shelf—every single one of them—drove home, made myself a cup of coffee, and settled into my couch to dive into

beauty and intention behind every photo, and I was even more enthralled with the wedding professionals whose talent

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Marrying the old with the new.

As a teenager, I lived and breathed magazines. I loved flipping through the carefully curated pages and finding beautiful inspiration, cutting out my favorite pieces to create something uniquely mine. Before Pinterest, we taped the prettiest wedding pictures on our walls or gave them a home in our binders. We all yearn for the connection and nostalgia of a time past. Trends circulate but nothing ever truly goes out of style. Like the magic of taking a Polaroid picture even if we have our high-resolution cell phone cameras, or visiting a library even if our Kindle can hold hundreds of books. There’s something incredibly special about the tangible feeling of getting to hold endless possibilities in our hands. So we decided to create the best of both worlds by marrying the old with the new! It’s an absolute dream come true to present our debut print magazine, The Aisle—an extension of The Aisle Guide, our premier digital platform for gorgeous inspiration, pro tips, and the connection to leading event experts across the globe. Volume 1 of The Aisle is full of awe-striking beauty

ach year brings a fresh crop of wedding trends to excite wedding professionals and couples alike—and with their arrival

comes the exodus of those styles and fads that have definitely run their course. While some have been overused and could make your day look cookie-cutter, there are other trends that are no longer in play because of the events of the past year. We asked The Aisle Guide’s community of wedding planners which trends should be left behind in the new year—and what couples can replace them with to still make their big day stand out.

Even before the pandemic, couples were seeing the benefits of a smaller guest list. “Engaged couples now more than ever are seeing how cutting your guest list down to the essentials can help their wallets and improve their experience on the wedding day,” says Kay Northrup of Kay Northrup Events, who adds that couples are now able to call the shots because many are paying for their own

Instead of champagne glasses on a wall, consider crafting a unique cocktail and have servers greet guests with an artisan beverage that can then be used to toast the bride and groom, suggests Samantha Leenheer of Samantha Joy Events. O U T: F I R E WO R K S IN: UNEXPECTED SURPRISES

There’s always something magical about fireworks, but sadly, most fireworks are illegal. As for the commonly used sparklers, those can also be dangerous when you’re mixing fire and (often) inebriated guests. Instead, Garibay recommends showcasing smaller unexpected surprises as the event unfolds, so all the guests can enjoy the experiences—not just those who stay until the end. Examples can be special entertainment, a balloon drop, or confetti cannons to kick off open dancing. O U T: D E S S E R T B U F F E T IN: WEDDING CAKE

While couples opted for dessert buffets in an effort to be different, the wedding cake is definitely making a comeback—but not just a plain buttercream cake or small cutting cake. “A tiered cake that tastes as good as it looks with an intentional design in line with the aesthetic is the centerpiece of the reception,” explains Garibay. “It should complement the overall event design and tie in details from other aspects of the wedding.”

only reflect you, but bring to life your entire event environment through the colors, hues, and textures of the season. Here, the founder of To Be Loved Events, Samantha Kin, looks at one important piece of design: the perfect reception tablescape. When designing your reception tablescape, first analyze your selected wedding date, season, and location. These factors can help you navigate the design of your wedding theme and color palette. Most of your tableware—including plates, napkins, glassware, and flatware—will be highly dependent on your menu. Whether you choose to be formal or casual, simple or elaborate, options abound. Let's explore four different tablescape options based on classic seasonal colors: 1

SPRING

For spring, Samantha shows a brighter color palette with orange, pink, peach, and yellow tones. Mixing greenery, gold accents, and more blush tones, she created a simple yet elegant table. This option would be beautiful outdoors in April or May. 2

/

SUMMER

Here’s a fun example of soft pastel florals with greenery and blush, gray, and gold accents. It was paired with a simple ivory menu and hanging napkin fold. Place cards would be a welcome addition as well. This could be wonderful for an outdoor wedding during the summer months. 3

/

FALL

The autumn color palette is much more muted. Samantha went deeper with the greenery and included soft touches of ivory, gray, and lilac. Paired with gold vases and flatware, these touches give the table some extra pop while

WINTER

For winter, Samantha chose a darker palette with deep maroon, wood, and greenery. The bare wooden farm tables with deeper colors make the tableware stand out. This would be perfect for a rustic reception, possibly for a barn or winery wedding. THEAISLEGUIDE.COM

When you’re planning a tented wedding, you’re starting from scratch. Additionally, you’ll need to look at access to water, power, and a place to use as a kitchen. S PACE R EQU IR E ME NT S

The amount of clear open space needed grows with the number of guests and what activities are being hosted under the tent. Here’s a quick guide to common uses and space requirements. SAFETY FIRST

allroom weddings are popular for a reason—they can be pretty darn seamless to plan. You have a seasoned on-site staff to work with, a connected hotel can host

your out-of-town guests, and they can easily accommodate nearly any size wedding. But we’d be lying if we said the everyday ballroom wedding was dripping in personality. Adding character and energy to typical ballroom spaces can take some serious strategy, but these design tips can help.

knowing what makes a perfect wedding venue can be tricky. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer to that question, but there are a handful of things you should consider when choosing a venue that’s a perfect fit for you and your wedding day vision.

L O C AT I O N

You likely have an idea of where you want to get married. Maybe it’s in the forested mountains of Lake Tahoe or on a chic rooftop in New York—if you’ve always pictured your wedding taking place in a certain location with a certain aesthetic, you obviously want to see that vision through when venue shopping. Remember, though, along with location come some logistical considerations—like parking—so don’t forget about those!

All Photography by Lucy Munoz; Venue by The Guild; Planning by Amorology

FEASIBILITY FOR GUESTS

While your own desires for your venue should come first, you also want to weigh those against the feasibility of the venue for your guests. If you want to have your fragile 85-year-old grandmother at the wedding ceremony, but the venue you’re looking at is only accessible by a set of 500 steep stairs that lead to a sandy beach, you’re going to have to decide on which is more important—having Grandma there or saying “I do” at that venue. Likewise, if it’s important for you to have many friends and family there, you don’t want to choose an across-the-globe location that will require your guests to book expensive plane tickets and accommodations, as this will cut your guest list down significantly. lanning a destination wedding is no easy feat. From language barriers to cost differences, there are quite a few

details to consider. But with the right team of professionals, you'll be sure to pull off an unforgettable event! Here, Valentina Ring of The Stars Inside shares her top 10 tips for planning a wedding abroad.

CHOOSE A M E A N I N G F U L L O C AT I O N .

One of the joys of destination weddings is getting excited about the location. Think about choosing a place that's important to you in some way—somewhere linked to a fond memory, a bucket-list location, or an embodiment of the passions and hobbies you share as a couple. Enjoying that travel experience with your loved ones will make the celebration all the more memorable! While brainstorming locations, try not to set your heart on anywhere too specific until you’ve had some time to find out whether it's within budget, safe for travel, and

The cost of a destination wedding depends on the location you choose, the style of wedding you want, and the value-for-money of the specific elements that are priorities for you. For example, you might find that a particular European country has very cost-effective catering and

understand if covering their expenses for multiple days isn’t something that is (or should be) part of your wedding budget. Tactfully layout expectations by setting up a helpful website where you can provide recommendations or explain the cost of rooms and meals. This is also a great way to give tips and advice for arranging travel, activities, and accommodations without feeling like you need to help every single guest book their plane ticket!

BE SAFE.

This tip goes for all weddings and is even more important for destination weddings—make sure you have wedding insurance well ahead of time. Investing in wedding insurance will protect your financial investment and also give you some emotional peace of mind. Not to mention the fact that many foreign venues actually require it these days anyway. Make sure you know exactly what coverage

Attention-Grabbing Accents That Won't Break the Bank W H E R E T O C R E AT E F O C A L P O I N T S I N YO U R W E D D I N G D É C O R

From an attention-grabbing entrance to reception lighting, here are a few things worth splurging on to create focal points in your wedding décor.

E Y E - C AT C H I N G E N T R A N C E

Invest in a wow moment as wedding guests enter the ceremony space. Whether it be an illustration, welcome sign, or a statement floral arrangement, you want to create something that will grab their attention and set the tone for your wedding's color story. Follow that up with a structure that will frame the two of you as you exchange your vows and highlight the theme of your special day. DOUBLE DUTY

Once you've created two attention-grabbing elements, make them work for multiple aspects of your wedding day. An elegant, eye-catching ceremony structure can be used as an excellent backdrop for your formal photographs and can be repositioned over your sweetheart table or cake table for a brand new reception look! Other elements of the ceremony décor, such as urns of flowers or lanterns, can be moved to the reception space and placed on anything from a gift table to a dessert station. LUXURIOUS LINENS

Linens can bring gorgeous pops of color and texture to your wedding reception in a reasonably affordable way. By adding unique linens to your sweetheart table and cake table, you'll create a detail everyone will capture in their photos. Even selecting a different colored napkin will create a splash of excitement at your guests' tables—an easy way to add interest to your otherwise classic display. LIGHT IT UP

Never underestimate the power of lighting! Uplighting can change the color of a neutral-colored blank canvas, while pin spots can draw the eyes to the centerpieces or wedding cake you're focusing on. And, a warm glow of candles at table height not only makes all of the glassware and charger plates shimmer, but also adds romance, and after all, who doesn't look good in candlelight?

hen it comes to wedding photographs, not all images are created equal. Different photographers offer different wedding

photography styles that may (or may not) speak to your aesthetic preferences. As you work to nail down a photographer for your big day, it’s important you spend some time studying each photographer’s style to figure out if it’s right for you. Three distinct wedding photography styles to consider are traditional, photojournalistic, and fine-art photography.

TRADITIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY

Traditional photography is what you probably think of when picturing classic wedding photos, like the ones your parents have framed in their house. Typically posed and shot straight-on at eye level, traditional photography isn’t particularly creative, but its simplistic nature ensures your photos stand the test of time. All photographers will likely incorporate this style into your big day when shooting portraits of you, your family, and your wedding party. PHOTOJOURNALISTIC PHOTOGRAPHY

Photojournalistic photography is all about telling a story with images, the same way a journalist would tell a story using words. A wedding photographer who specializes in this style will typically work to capture candid shots that weave together the narrative of your wedding day. This style is perfect for documenting the real, heartfelt moments that happen on your big day—you and your partner buckled over in laughter, your mother wiping a tear from her cheek during the ceremony, the flower girl raising her hands in joy on the dance floor. FINE-ART PHOTOGRAPHY

Fine-art photography is less about creating an image that documents a moment and more about creating an image that stands alone as a piece of art. Often shot on film, this style takes an artistic approach as your photographer stages images that express the emotions swirling around your big day. Picture a striking, upclose silhouette of your hands, or a faraway landscape shot of you two standing on the edge of a cliff with a saturated sky overhead. THEAISLEGUIDE.COM

O F YO U R W E D D I N G DAY PHOTOGRAPHY

here are many different ways to maximize what you get from your photographer. Some main points to

start with are to share inspiration, create a plan together, and then just focus on being present and engaging with your guests. The following tips from Stetten Wilson Photography will help you get more from your photographer, and also enjoy your wedding and your photos more thoroughly.

SHARE THE LOVE

Part of what makes the best photographers excel at their craft is pulling inspiration from their clients. Because every couple is unique, if you share your story and what you love about photographs, the more in tune they’ll be with you. Some clients may love an editorial portrait more than a slow-shutter candid moment, and if your photographer understands that, then they’ll know what to pursue given the limited time they have with you and your event. Sharing inspiring images with your photographer (no matter who took the photos) can help them draw inspiration for your wedding day photography. STETTEN WILSON PHOTOGRAPHY Stetten Wilson is a boutique photography studio serving clients around the world. Devin and Skylar specialize in luxury destination weddings, interiors, and commercial photography. The studio was founded in 2007 and has been named one of the Top Wedding Photographers in America by BRIDES magazine. Follow them on Instagram @stettenwilson

Communicate your photo priorities to your photographer. To do this, think about what you’d like to see in your gallery. Do you value seeing the real, not-so-perfect candid moments that unfold naturally more than the perfectly posed and styled moments? Look through your wedding day timeline and ask yourself, if two things are happening at the same time, where would you prefer the photographer be? Whether your priorities are photos of the small décor details, guests at cocktail hour, your stationery suite, the signing of the marriage

he design team of RMBO Collective and Heather Kincaid Photography created an intimate, thoughtful wedding scenario for a post-Covid world. They stripped away the fanfare of weddings of the past in favor of intimate moments for the couple to share, like getting ready together, sharing a meal, cutting their wedding cake, enjoying their first dance, and toasting to their union. The design aesthetic is a

study of contrast—bringing softness into a hard space, letting light dance in the shadows, and creating joy amid the challenges of our present. The Revery LA provided the perfect backdrop for the neutral color palette with faded winter hues of sand, bone, and shades of gray. The dramatic fringe curtain installation set an ethereal tone while creating a translucent divider to bring intimacy to the large studio. Geometric shapes, from lines to circles, made multiple appearances, from the dining chairs to the stunning yet simple cake. The floral installation hanging above the dining table added whimsy, and the collection of hurricane candles cast a romantic glow. This styled editorial aspires to help couples feel inspired by love, hopeful for the future, and excited to see the magic that can be created in a small setting.

Behind the Scenes with RMBO Collective HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE D E S I G N O F T H I S E D I TO R I A L? The concept for the shoot came from our simple desire to study the deep shadows cast during wintertime. From there, the idea of light/shadow, positivity/negativity, and hard/soft evolved. The design aesthetic is a study in contrasts: bringing softness into a hard space, letting light dance in the winter shadows, and creating joy amid the challenges of our present. W H AT WA S YO U R FAVO R I T E D É CO R D E TA I L? W H Y ? The fringe curtain served an important purpose, from framing the space to providing a whimsical detail to explore. It created a strong visual moment, provided incredible movement, cast shadows, and allowed the models to flow between it. We’ve got to give a shout-out to the incredible dining chairs! They truly inspired so much of the shoot, from their arched form to their metallic spindle base. The fringe detail was also repeated throughout. From there, the paper goods mimicked the chair and fringe shapes, and the cut outs within the paper goods helped to cast shadows and light, which were big design themes as well.

them into a paste to add to the buttercream and spread between the layers. We also chop up crunchy praline pieces, so you get praline three ways. The finishing touch is the caramel syrup that we add to our brown sugar vanilla cake. It’s perfect for someone who wants a lighter flavor with some rich elements. My personal favorite is our blood orange olive oil cake. This cake was inspired by my time spent studying abroad in Italy at the height of the blood orange season. The cake itself is a citrus almond cake made with olive oil instead of butter. The texture is light and spongy, and the flavor could stand on its own as a coffee cake. We layer it with blood orange curd and citrus praline buttercream and the result is divine. W H AT A R E YO U R M O S T REQUESTED WEDDING CAKE D E S I G N S ? To prepare for a tasting, I’d spend some time looking at design inspiration so you can give your cake designer direction about your wedding style. We recommend not only taking inspiration from cakes but from other items like textiles or stationery. Flavor is the second

My best advice is to stay true to yourself. You know what you love. Your wedding is an expression of who you are as a couple. I wouldn’t worry about other people’s tastes or expectations. We hear all the time that our more adventurous flavors or designs aren’t really “wedding cake” appropriate. Honestly, there are no rules anymore. Just be yourself and have fun with it!

INGREDIENTS: – 1 cup all-purpose flour – 1/2 cup blanched or natural almond flour – 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder – 1 tsp. kosher salt – 3 large eggs – 3/4 cup granulated sugar – 1/2 cup plus 1 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil – 1/2 tsp. pure vanilla extract – 1/4 tsp. pure almond extract – Grated zest of 1 ½ medium lemons – 1/2 cup orange juice DIRECTIONS: 1.

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan or springform pan and set aside.

2 . In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, al-

them lightly to break up the yolks. Add the sugar to the bowl and whisk thoroughly until combined, about 30 seconds. Add the olive oil and whisk until the mixture is a bit lighter in color and has thickened, about 2–3 minutes. Whisk in the extracts and zest, followed by the orange juice, and whisk to combine. 4 . Add the dry ingredients to the bowl and whisk until

it’s thoroughly combined and you have a smooth, emulsified batter. Do not overmix once you’ve added the dry ingredients. 5 . Pour the batter into the prepared pan, and bake

Groom’s cakes can be a fun way to surprise the groom on the wedding day. These cakes often deviate from the general style of the wedding and celebrate the groom’s interests in a playful way. We’ve made everything from sports-themed cakes to a life-size replica of the groom’s dog. D O YO U H AV E A N Y C A K E D I S A S T E R STORIES TO SHARE?

Back when I was first starting out, one of my employees and I made a cake as a gift for her sister. Because the wedding was closer to my parent’s house than the bakery, we decided to finish decorating the cake there. The house was full of other guests going in and out so the air conditioning wasn’t working very well and the cake got too warm. We stacked the warm tiers fully before transporting the cake down my parent’s gravel driveway. Within 20 minutes, the middle tier of the cake had collapsed. I had to rush home and salvage the remaining cake. Luckily, I was able to bring it to the venue on time, piping frantically in the back of the car as my mom drove me to the venue. The couple loved the cake, but I was crushed that it wasn’t as spectacular as we had originally intended. Now we always make the cakes in our well air-conditioned bakery, and we never deliver them fully stacked. THEAISLEGUIDE.COM

How to Prep for Your Wedding Tasting 10 PRO TIPS TO CONSIDER BEFORE YOU DIG IN

1

S TA R T W I T H YO U R B U D G E T

Knowing what you can (and can’t) afford will save you heartbreak in the long run. You’ll probably end up falling in love with a ton of delicious options at your tastings, but if you’re on a tight budget, you likely can’t serve your guests everything you tasted. Keep a solid number in mind and talk to your partner beforehand about FOOD & DRINK

how flexible (or inflexible) it may be. 2

/

DO YOUR LEGWORK

You want to start by working with a professional planner to nail down the top caterers in your area. From there, collect sample menus and pricing information from each, and be sure you understand what they offer when it comes to tastings—some may allow you to do a tasting without signing a contract first, while others may only offer a tasting after you’ve booked their services. Either way, you’ll want to have your research done first. Know what the caterer’s or restaurant’s strengths and signature dishes are—read online reviews, check out their website, etc. If, for example, tons of past clients are saying their tuna tartare is to-die-for, you might want to make sure it’s included in your tasting. Knowing a caterer’s background and strengths will help you know what items to focus on as you work to craft the perfect wedding menu. 3

his pretty-in-pink unconventional elopement by the sea is blooming with possibility. The aim of this editorial was to inspire creative, non-tra-

ditional, and innovative couples who are drawn to the idea of having an elopement near the sea. The Beacon House is a lovely historical home by the beach in Whitstable, Kent, England. Built at the turn of last century, the Beacon House stands above a natural promontory that stretches out to sea—with a twinkling view that changes with the tides. The house has a New England feel to it with its wide wooden frontage, distinctive veranda, and wraparound decking. The owners of the house still live in it, looking after it and curating all the beautiful details that tell the story of the property's past. The delicate seashell name cards and coral intertwined with the florals are some of the many ocean elements that invoke joyous imagery. Full of energy, this is a celebration centered around a couple who chooses to fill their elopement day with meaningful luxuries, and plenty of time for adventure too! The palette is playful with a tonal wonderland of pink, framed by crisp black lines—colorful, while still being refined. Pink isn't often a color associated with the sea, but it complements all the whites, blues, and greens of the landscape in a refreshing way. Everything from the sugar wisps on the cake to the translucent vellum of the stationery tells the story of the contradictions of the sea: the immense power of waves crashing on a cliffside, bubbling over the quiet haven just below the surface. The design inspiration is marine and summery, but still fresh and new—a contemporary interpretation of beachy, boho vibes. An intimate day like this can be all the more magical!

The most important advice us wedding pros can give to engaged couples is to embrace why you’re making the choices you are. Wedding days are about telling your story, with all the little quirks that make you “you”—the things that you love, that excite you, that you’re proud to invest in, and that you want to share with your loved ones. Whenever you feel like you're making a decision with the pressure of expectations, preconceptions, or Pinterest overwhelm, take a moment to step back, breathe deeply, and remind yourself of the marriage that this day is actually all about.

Love is in the Hair I N S I D E W E D D I N G DAY BEAUT Y WITH HAIRST YLIST DJ QUINTERO

HOW DOES A CLIENT GO ABOUT CHOOSING A HAIRSTYLE FOR T H E I R W E D D I N G DAY ?

On your wedding day, you should look like yourself! You don’t want to look back in a year’s time and think “why did I do that?“ Your wedding day hair should be the best version of you. Trends will come and go, but your wedding pictures won’t. HOW DOES THE WEDDING DRESS S T Y LE IMPAC T H A IR FASHION & BE AUT Y

AND MAKEUP?

It’s all about balance. You should take the neckline and shape of the dress into mind. For example, if there’s a lot going on with your dress, keep hair and makeup a little more simple. Or if the dress is simple, you can be a bit more dramatic with the hair. If the dress has a high neckline, consider wearing your hair up. Ask yourself, what do the proportions of the dress do and how can you balance everything out? HOW CAN A CLIENT HELP THEIR ST YLIST ACHIEVE THEIR DREAM DJ QUINTERO DJ Quintero is a NY-based hairstylist. After working extensively in New York and assisting hair icon Serge Normant, Quintero has established himself as a favorite with celebrity clients such as Katie Holmes, Amanda Seyfried, Lily Collins, Julianne Moore, Blake Lively, Sarah Jessica Parker, Mariah Carey, Charlize Theron, and Mick Jagger, to name a few.

WEDDING LOOK?

Definitely do a trial! Someone who already knows your hair and what you like is more likely to get it right for your wedding day. Bring a lot of pictures with you to your trial appointment and play before the big day. You don’t want your wedding day to be all about your hair, you want it to be about the person you’re marrying.

H OW D I D YO U G E T S TA R T E D IN THE BRIDAL FA SHION INDUSTRY?

I had a ready-to-wear collection, Korovilas, from 2010 to about 2018. The brand focused on dresses, incorporating artisanal and novelty techniques into casual and event looks, but customers also came to us for special occasions. We didn’t want to cloud the original concept, so we started a new bridal and event spinoff. FASHION & BE AUT Y

BHLDN had been buying from the line before that second collection started, but the new focus further fostered our relationship. Now, I work with BHLDN to create the same kinds of artisanal novelties for their own-brand collection. I love the latest collection with BHLDN. W H AT WA S T H E I N S P I R AT I O N B E H I N D B H L D N B LU E L A B E L?

This latest collection started as a series of vignettes inspired by different facets of the Regency period. We looked at writers, popular colors, artwork motifs in linens, antique fabrications we love today, and even wallpaper. I broke that inspiration down through various lenses, then put it back together to capture versions that would suit the many sides of our customer. That overarching concept shaped a very cohesive collection. I love bridging the gap from ready-to-wear to the bridal market MARIA KOROVIL AS Maria Korovilas is a fashion and textile designer and a brand creative visionary. After receiving her MFA in fashion and textile design, she launched her dress-focused collection, k o r o v i l a s, which was sold at Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom Via C, Anthropologie, Free People, BHLDN, and independent boutiques. She now lives in Atlanta, creating capsule collections for BHLDN and maintaining a professorship at SCAD, Atlanta.

She’s a cool girl with a fashion point of view, even for her wedding dress. She’s open to options beyond the traditional—not afraid to go out on a limb and wear color, or print, or a statement-making 3D pleated organza mini! This bride wants to fall in love with the “concept” of the gown, and that’s hard to do unless you’re adept at vintage shopping, or sourcing with a keen eye from the readyto-wear/luxury market. BHLDN is building out this own-brand collection to capture the true artisanal design process, and that really sets the gowns and their wearers apart. WHO IS YOUR ST YLE ICON OR ST YLE I N S P I R AT I O N ?

I’m a Francophile to the core, so my list goes something like: French New Wave, Anna Karina, Lou Doillon, Clemence Poesy, Vanessa Paradis, Francoise Hardy, Charlotte Gainsbourg . . . plus a dash of Talitha Getty, Anita Pallenberg, Jenny Lewis, and a lot from Freddie Mercury. Those bohemian rock ‘n’ roll vibes find their place with me constantly, even if it’s just the music in my studio. I call them all my “ever inspirations.” For me, these muses are so eclectic, so unique, and have a way of taking the unusual and putting it together to

The team was captivated by Bridgerton, so we dug into fashion history from the Regency period for BHLDN Blue Label, particularly how casual fabrics like lawn cottons and organdies were made to look so luxurious. We wanted to put those fabrications through the filter of luxe techniques for a high/low mix. BHLDN Blue Label offers a range of fairly classic shapes paired with fabrications that make them unique and interesting, yet still totally wearable. There are some riffs on architectural pleating and fashion-forward silhouettes, but it’s really all about color, technique, fabric manipulation, and the fabrics themselves. You’ll discover faille, taffeta, chiffon, organdy, cotton voile, organza, and a range of tulle qualities that go beyond the expected bridal tulle into more cotton gauze-y textures. There are, of course, variations on ivory, but this collection also plays with prints, blushes, and tea shades for the bride who wants that “golden” moment.

I’m very hands-on in my design life, but my wedding dress was different. I found some insane Art Nouveau tablecloths at an antique fair, threw them on the form, draped them into a look, sketched the look, and sent it to my factory with six weeks to go. I don’t know what I was thinking, but it arrived four days before the wedding and fit perfectly! The gown was cotton-y gauze (my first foray into casual as fancy) with antique brass and ivory cutwork. Our wedding was Art Nouveau-inspired, so that brass detailing became a threadline with my gown as the anchor. Don’t think about your dress in a vacuum; think about the “story” of your wedding and build into it with your dress as the most aspirational portion. Always ask yourself “is this cohesive with my wedding concept?” Build a vision, an experience, not just a “bridal look.” W H AT C H A N G E S WO U L D YO U L I K E T O S E E I N THE WEDDING FA SHION INDUSTRY ?

Decoding Wedding Dress Codes LEARN ABOUT EACH T YPE

1

/

BL ACK TIE

This dress code is pretty straightforward for men, as the name tips you off to wearing a tuxedo. Preferably black with a classic bow tie. However, in recent years there have been FASHION & BE AUT Y

many variations on the classic black shawl collar tuxedo. For women, it's a little less specific. Usually, this formality is an event for a formal floor-length gown. Sometimes, if the wedding is a little less formal, a cocktail dress or pantsuit can be on point. 2

/

BL ACK TIE OPTIONAL

OR FORMAL

This dress code can be a little less formal than black tie. For men, while a tuxedo is always a great choice, a dark suit works too. For ladies, black tie guidelines still work—if you’re opting for a cocktail dress or pantsuit, add some elegant accessories to ensure your outfit falls within the formal category. 3

/

C O C K TA I L

Cocktail attire is the most common dress code people will encounter when it comes to weddings. Traditionally, cocktail attire is less formal but not in any way casual. For men, a suit is still appropriate, however colors like charcoal or navy will work. For women, choose a pantsuit or dress that is still below the knee but not necessarily floor-length. Think tea-length or knee-length. Today, more and more creative clothing options are becoming acceptable—so have a little fun with your cocktail fashion!

SEMI-FORMAL , SMART CASUAL , OR FESTIVE

When figuring out this dress code, look at the time of day. For an evening event, choose darker colors and lean a little more to the cocktail attire side. For a daytime event, choose lighter shades and pick more understated accessories. Festive attire is usually associated with a holiday wedding, especially New Year's Eve. It refers to cocktail or semi-formal attire with pops of holiday color or accessories. 5

Know Where to Start

This dress code blurs lines the most. Casual attire refers to informal and com-

of the wedding will give you many silent clues.

You should dress differently for a ski lodge wedding than you do for a beach wedding. Think khakis or nice jeans, light button-downs, and sundresses, all depending on the climate.

– The Date: A weekday or Friday night

wedding may be slightly less formal than a weekend event. Additionally, a holiday wedding may, depending on the invitation's style, give you a nod to some more festive clothing options. – Time of Day: An evening wedding is

usually considered more formal than a daytime wedding. – Location: A wedding ceremony inside

a house of worship will likely be more formal than a ceremony at a beachfront resort where the wedding ceremony could occur outside. Keep in mind that some areas of the country may dress more conservatively than others. – Occasionally, black tie or black tie

optional may be included in the lower right hand corner of a formal wedding invitation. – Look to the couple’s wedding website, if

they have one, for additional information on the dress code. If you’re the couple getting married, this is the perfect place to share those helpful details. – If it’s an outdoor wedding, ladies should

consider flats and wedges over heels that might get stuck in the grass. – A beach wedding might require a

different dress code than a beachside wedding.

CUFFLINKS

Cufflinks are a simple way to express your personal style in your

Eliz

wedding day look—select a design that speaks to you! Make sure your shirt can accommodate a cufflink because most regular dress shirts don’t. When inserting your cufflinks, make sure you get the correct side facing out (yes, there’s a front and a back). With your arms hanging down at your side, the front of your cufflink should be facing outwards, not inwards toward your body. FASHION & BE AUT Y

POCKET SQUARE

There are dozens of different ways to fold pocket squares, but for your wedding day, go with either the Presidential or the Puff. The Presidential is simply a square fold with the visible part straight across. You just fold the square into a rectangle and make sure the top is straight once it’s in your pocket. The Puff is even easier because it doesn’t have to be perfect. Lay the square flat and pinch the center with two or three fingers before stuffing it into your pocket. The part you pinched is the part that shows at the top—just fluff it up a little bit and you’re good to go. Pro Tip: Pocket squares can be slippery and sometimes fall

Jen

down inside your pocket. Get a small wad of tissue or toilet paper and put that down inside your pocket first, before placing it in the pocket square. The tissue takes up space at the bottom of your pocket so your square stays at the top. TIE BAR

Clean and classic is best. The tie bar should be positioned at your upper sternum so it’s visible if you’re wearing a vest. It JOHN GALFANO John Galfano is the founder of 40OverFashion.com, a men’s lifestyle site and YouTube channel catering to grown-up men. 40OverFashion offers style inspiration, product reviews, lifestyle topics, and fresh ideas for guys who believe first impressions are important. should only span about ½ or ¾ of the width of your tie, never wider than your tie. Make sure to match your metals. If you’re wearing a silver watch or silver cufflinks, go with a silver tie bar. JACKET BUT TONS

This is a biggie. If you’re wearing a two-button jacket, do not button the bottom button—ever! This rule dates back to King Henry VIII and still holds up today. Always leave the bottom button undone; it’s just there for looks.

aniel and Brittany’s love story began much like a romantic comedy— at a rooftop party above a noodle factory in Chinatown. They talked the night away while enjoying the incredible views of Manhattan and Brooklyn, and they haven’t looked back since. After 10 years, Daniel proposed to Brittany in the fall of 2019 by tying the ring around their

miniature poodle, Stella. Brittany came home to the surprise of a lifetime, Daniel on one knee and an engagement dinner with all of their loved ones at their favorite restaurant, Bowery Meat Company. Like many engaged couples, Daniel and Brittany had to push their wedding date due to the Covid-19 pandemic. They took the delay as a gift in disguise because it changed their wedding season to spring and inspired the bright addition of fuchsia to the sand and saddle-brown color palette. The weather was perfect, guests were vaccinated, and the outdoor venue made their special day safe and enjoyable for everyone. The wedding design inspiration was Hill Country meets NYC glam, so naturally the couple fell in love with Mae’s Ridge because of its rolling hills and modern aesthetic. Brittany’s goal was to marry her love of NYC sophistication with her country roots. Daniel and Brittany’s favorite part of their wedding day was after they were pronounced husband and wife and they walked down the aisle hand in hand as a married couple for the first time. Another highlight was the surprise sparkler cannon exit! Such a magical way to end the night.

to press or dry their bouquet after their big day is over, ensuring they can hold onto those precious petals for years to come. But, with so many styles to choose from, how do you know which best complements the overall aesthetic of your wedding? Get to know

Pageant Bouquet or Presentation Bouquet W H A T I T I S

This bouquet style typically has longer stems and is designed to fit into the crook of a bride’s arm (rather than held in her hands like with traditional bouquets). WHO WILL LOVE IT

Pageant bouquets are gaining popularity in modern boho weddings. They’re perfect for the bride who loves the look of long stems and wants a bouquet that’s out of the box, super lush, and extra dreamy. THINGS TO CONSIDER

Presentation bouquets make for stunning photographs, but they’re not as practical for walking down the aisle.

Cascading Bouquet W H A T I T I S

Cascading bridal bouquets are just what they sound like: arrangements that cascade downward (like a waterfall). Think wispy, long vines spilling forward in front of your hands. WHO WILL LOVE IT

If you’re the queen of all-things whimsical and dreamy, this bouquet is for you! The waterfall shape can feel quite feminine and fairytale-like, so they’re perfect for charming garden weddings, stunning ballroom weddings, and classic cathedral weddings alike. If you’re using lots of vines and greenery throughout your other florals, a cascading

bouquet might just be the perfect option to tie everything together. THINGS TO CONSIDER

Cascading bridal bouquets are a sight in and of themselves—so they don’t typically pair well with super elaborate wedding gowns, as they can be overpowering. Instead, they’re the perfect way to complete a simple, understated bridal look. THEAISLEGUIDE.COM

Round Bouquet W H A T I T I S

Round bridal bouquets are just that: round! Round bouquets either consist of a single type of floral or varying types of florals in a single color arranged in a perfect dome. Stems are typically wrapped tight with a silk ribbon. WHO WILL LOVE IT

Looking for the most timeless and elegant of all bridal bouquet styles? This is it. Round bouquets have been popular in weddings for years—and they’re not going out of style anytime soon. If you’re rocking a princess ball gown or going for a classic, formal wedding aesthetic, this bouquet is your best friend. THINGS TO CONSIDER

A round bouquet is a true classic, so you’ll want to make sure it fits with the overall aesthetic of your wedding. Keep in mind round bouquets typically make the strongest statement when they’re monochromatic or consist of all one type of flower. They also look best kept to a moderate-to-small size.

FLORALS

Posy Bouquet W H A T I T I S

Think of a posy bouquet as a round bouquet’s younger sister. Typically meant to be held in one hand, posy bouquets are often PHOTO CREDITS This page, from top: Emilie Olsen Photography; Cat’s Lens Photography Opposite page, from top: Feather and Stone; Annie Elizabeth Photography

given to grandmothers, mothers, or bridesmaids for their walk down the aisle. Just like a round bouquet, they’re arranged into a round dome. WHO WILL LOVE IT

Brides looking for something small and petite that won’t overwhelm their gown will love an elegant posy bouquet. THINGS TO CONSIDER

Because these are smaller and typically used as bridesmaids bouquets, you might want to consider a floral mockup first to ensure a posy bouquet isn’t too tiny or underwhelming for the look you’re going for. 128

Aisle_Chapter_Final.indd 128

Hand-Tied Bouquet W H A T I T I S

Hand-tied bouquets are typically tied off by ribbons or twine, with stems left showing at the bottom for that "fresh-pickedflowers" feel. They’re usually chock-full of an assortment of both flowers and greenery and are meant to feel less constricted and “looser” than round bridal bouquets. WHO WILL LOVE IT

Brides looking for something wild and free will love a hand-tied bouquet. This style is perfect for bohemian affairs and outdoor ceremonies set in a garden or forest. THINGS TO CONSIDER

These bouquets can get heavy! Because a hand-tied bouquet is meant to look lush and often contains an abundance of both greenery and flowers, they can be a little burdensome to carry for long periods of time.

Nosegay Bouquet W H A T I T I S

A nosegay bridal bouquet is like a posy bouquet, only it contains more greenery. While a posy is typically focused on all florals, a nosegay will have leaves or greenery that peep through as well, with the focus being on just a few floral stems. Just like a posy, a nosegay bouquet is small and hand-tied. WHO WILL LOVE IT

If you want something small and understated but with a stronger focus on greens, this bouquet is for you! THINGS TO CONSIDER

These are usually given as gifts to bridesmaids for their walk down the aisle, but they can work well for petite brides or brides who want to opt for a smaller bouquet and keep the focus on their gown instead of on florals.

aylor and Bray met at Berkshire School in Massachusetts in 2011 but they didn’t date until 7 years later when they were both living in Southern California. Bray took Taylor to the Marine Corp Ball, which led to their first official date in Ven-

ice, California. They went surfing and ate PB&J sandwiches on the back of Bray’s pickup truck. On January 25th, 2020, they got engaged during a sunset picnic at El Matador Beach. Just as the sun was about to set, they walked down to the water and Bray got down on one knee. Both of their families got to witness this beautiful moment at the top of the cliffs. They got married on May 1st, 2021, at the historic French Huguenot Church in Charleston, South Carolina. Cocktail Hour was hosted on a boat sailing through the harbor from downtown to Daniel Island for the reception. Local musician Josh Hughett performed on the boat, and guests sipped cocktails from custom mugs as they cruised the harbor. The reception was hosted at the Daniel Island Club on the back lawn overlooking the marsh and a breathtaking sunset. The wedding had a coastal theme with an elegant yet laid-back vibe. The design included neutrals and blues with wood, rattan elements, and seagrass accents. The reception showcased an assortment of medium and large bamboo-wrapped lanterns that illuminated the night. The tablescapes featured a honey rattan charger, blue swirl dinner plates, and geometric salad plates with wood gold flatware. Each setting had a hand-calligraphed wood napkin ring with each guest's name. They incorporated some military traditions like cutting the wedding cake with Bray’s Marine Officer Sword. Taylor and Bray shared their first dance to Ray LaMontagne’s “You Are the Best Thing” under a stunning canopy of fairy lights. They continued to dance the night away to the tunes of the Atlanta Party Band with all of their family and friends. It was the happiest day of their lives, and they couldn’t stop smiling. Love truly filled the air that night.

nspired by autumn, this styled shoot is a modern and elegant interpretation of Spanish Colonial style. Held at a stunning estate in Woodside, California, the venue’s layout is so versatile it offers a space for a ceremony in the courtyard, a cocktail hour by the pool, and the most perfect greenhouse reception! It’s the attention to detail and special touches, like the rounded chairs that mirror the arches in the architecture, that really marry the organic décor to the minimalistic design. The yellow, orange, and tan hues in the color palette, the textures, and the unique boho pieces complement the natural beauty of each space in the estate. Draping lush greenery meets

fall-inspired vibrance and romance with the beautiful florals. Flowers were innovatively woven through the chairs for an extra pop of color. Best of all, the shoot features a real-life couple whose love really shines through in every gorgeous moment captured.
