Don't forget to tour both AT&T Stadium and Globe Life Field while you're here! The newest sports team to call Arlington home are the Dallas Jackals, a professional rugby team of Major League Rugby.
Choctaw Stadium hosts both the Dallas Jackals and the North Texas Soccer Club games. When there's not a rugby or soccer game going on, make sure you check out other concert and events hosted at Choctaw Stadium.

Moonshine & Poker: Arlington’s History as Vegas Before Vegas TOURING TOP ‘O HILL TERRACE! By April Luter, Decima Mullen, & Casey Mallory
Flanked by two stone walls, a guard house, and heavy iron gates, the entrance to Top ‘O Hill Terrace looks like something out of a 1920s mystery novel.
The expansive views of the surrounding area make it easy to understand the meaning behind the name, Top ‘O Hill Terrace. If these aged walls could talk, they would whisper all the secret passwords that armed guards would demand from the notorious gamblers, gangsters, and entertainers who poured through this entrance. Now a Baptist University, it’s no wonder the place is listed as one of the Top 4 Attractions in Arlington on Trip Advisor, in the same breath as more wellknown attractions like AT&T Stadium, Globe Life Field, and Six Flags Over Texas. Curator and historian Vickie Bryant has spent the last 20 years collecting memorabilia, photographs, and stories to
22
pull Top ‘O Hill visitors back in time to the days of moonshine and poker, or as she likes to say, from “Poker to Preachers.” The rich history began with a simple tearoom and evolved into illegal gambling, moonshine, brothels, and murder. The elite found themselves here rubbing shoulders with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Ginger Rogers, and John Wayne. Rumor has it that Bonnie & Clyde hid here on their crime spree and photos prove that Sally Rand performed here to the guests in the tea garden. In this age of prohibition, Top O’ Hill offered liquor brought in by bootleggers, and a basement was built to house a high stakes casino. As guests high rolled and reveled their way through the days, the
2022 / Arlington.org
occasional police raid had them fleeing their roulette and poker tables through underground, hidden tunnels that led to the tea garden—where they could pretend they had been enjoying their tea and sandwiches among the “real” guests the whole time. Rumor has it that the tunnels were also used to discretely carry out the bodies of those who were shot during brawling gambling escapades. Arlington native and Top ‘O Hill’s owner, Fred Browning, was not only the mastermind behind the casino, but he also brought his passions for racehorses and boxing to the property. Just beyond the legitimate tea garden, Royal Ford Stable housed award-winning thoroughbred
racehorses. Only the best expert jockeys, trainers, and grooms attended to Browning’s horses, which led to the foal of his prized horse, Royal Ford, defeating the infamous Seabiscuit in 1940. Horses weren’t the only thing being trained on the property. Browning trained professional boxers in his own mini gym, sparing ring, and 50-foot swimming pool (a rarity for this time). For years, Top ‘O Hill thrived, with both legal and illegal activity, until a massive raid by the Texas Rangers in the late 1940s began the slow decline and ultimate foreclosure of Top ’O Hill. A local pastor, known for his outspoken opposition to the events that occurred at
23
Top ‘O Hill, saw the foreclosure as an opportunity to purchase the property and turn it into what is now known as Arlington Baptist University. The stories of Top ‘O Hill live on today through recovered paraphernalia and the restoration of tunnels that lead to yet-to-be-uncovered secret rooms. Step back into time and explore the underground tunnels, the still standing stables, the once grand swimming pool, and the tea garden where countless illicit activities occurred, with fascinating artifacts and stories along the way. Schedule a tour at TopOfHillTerrace.com.

Holiday Cheer All Year! WELCOME TO DECORATOR’S WAREHOUSE By Decima Mullen
A wise elf once said, “The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear!” and I couldn’t agree more. However, I would add a bit more to that wondrous advice: “The best way to spread holiday cheer is singing loud for all to hear and shopping at Decorator’s Warehouse!” Every holiday season, we happily jump into the car and head on over to the #1 largest and most beautiful, happy, and jolly holiday décor store in the world: Decorator’s Warehouse. (All while giving Mariah Carey a run for her money with my ‘car’aoke version of “All I want for Christmas is You.”) Insider Tip: If you just can’t get to the physical location or you visit Arlington at a time when they’re restocking, you’re in luck! They offer shopping online at DecoratorsWarehouse. com and ship anywhere!
If you still need some convincing, here are five reasons you should make Decorator’s Warehouse a priority visit RIGHT NOW:
1. D ECORATOR’S WAREHOUSE IS THE LARGEST CHRISTMAS STORE IN THE LONE STAR STATE. Not only is it the largest in Texas, but it’s one of the largest in the world! Make sure you’re wearing serious shopping gear and leave plenty of time to roam all 60,000 square feet of holiday magic. It’s pretty easy to get lost among the beautiful, themed spaces while being immersed in an absolute wonderland of glitter, glam, woodsy, frosty, candy cane, and colorful ribbon-swirled world that will have you feeling like a kid on Christmas Eve!
2. I F YOU’RE LOOKING FOR IT (AND EVEN IF YOU’RE NOT), DECORATOR’S WAREHOUSE HAS IT! Their expansive inventory includes thousands of products— Christmas trees, tree accessories, garland, ornaments, wreaths, candy canes, gingerbread houses,
28
ribbon, stockings, candles, Nativity sets, table runners, centerpieces, figurines, and more. You name it, they have it. It’s truly a one-of-a-kind shopping experience with the largest collection of holiday décor you’ll ever see. They’ve also added “Everyday Collections” featuring items from Cottage Florals to Urban Farmhouse vibes.
3. D ECORATOR’S WAREHOUSE TREE BUNDLES! If you struggle with how, where, what, and OMG HELP ME! when it comes to holiday decorating, take a deep breath, and let me introduce you to a Christmas miracle: DW Bundles. How does this magical holiday unicorn work, you may ask? Easy as 1, 2, 3…and a 4. First, you’ll choose the size of your tree. Then, you’ll select one of their designer-created themes from choices like: Santa’s Sweet Shoppe (it looks just like you would imagine a bakery at the North Pole would look), Midnight
2022 / Arlington.org
Ice, Winter Wonderland, and— my personal favorite—Natural Elegance. Next, they give you everything you need to decorate your tree. Everything. You can leave the store with it, or have it shipped to your door. But you might be asking, “But what do I do with it”? Well, DW also provides step by step video instructions on how to easily assemble the pieces to decorate and place everything on your tree. Voilà.
4. THERE ARE MORE THAN 20 THEMED AREAS THROUGHOUT THE STORE. You read that right—more than 20 different themed areas! Rustic, classic, religious, glam, woodsy, champagne, whimsical, and fun are just some of the
numerous themes your eyes will be treated to as you explore this Christmas playground. Remember how Charlie felt when he walked into the Willy Wonka Chocolate Factory for the first time? It’s like that, but the chocolate is Christmas.
5. ALL THE PHOTO OPS! Take advantage of the stunning set ups and themed photo opportunities scattered throughout the store. Don’t forget to post those photos and use the hashtag #dwchristmas and #ArlingtonTX to share your Gram worthy moments. For more on Decorator’s Warehouse, visit DecoratorsWarehouse.com.
