Valley Marine, Reynaldo Leal, Captures Slot at Museum of Fine Arts War Photo Exhibit Just to Please His Girl..

On Reynaldo Leal’s second deployment

to Iraq, as part of the 3rd Battalion 5th Marines– specialized to conduct counterinsurgency operations along the Euphrates River an unlikely photo-opportunity occurred. “I had just come back from an ambush position with my squad and was taking photos of them back at our patrol base when I remembered that my then girlfriend, (now wife) wanted me to send her a photo. I had asked my fellow Marines to take some shots but none of them looked the way I wanted them to look. So, I calibrated the camera settings, propped it up on some MRE boxes and fired the camera shot with the timer. Otherwise. it would have never been taken.” This photo of Reynaldo will be on display in the War Photography Exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston next year.

Self portrait taken by Valley native Reynaldo Leal after returning from a patrol near Faluja, Iraq where his unit was conducting counter-insurgency operations. The self portrait (above) will appear at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston for the War Photography Exhibit and later in Washington D.C. page 16 ContempoMag.com

Out of all the photos Reynaldo took while in Iraq he never thought that this one picture would be among those selected to be showcased at the War Museum. “I have been told by the museum that it is one of only three self portraits taken in war and that the last one taken was during the American Civil War. It just goes to show you that great works are in the making when inspired by great love”, says Leal. The exhibit begins in November of next year and will travel to Washington D.C. in early 2013.

GONE HOLLYWOOD

Screening

CINE EL REY

Stars and crew of the Latin comedy GONE HOLLYWOOD at the Cine El Rey screening in March. Valente Rodriguez who appears in the film and Co-writer David Rice are top second and third from left.

Gone Hollywood, a movie that stars Fernando Car-

rillo and valley native, Valente Rodriguez will be shown in Austin Texas as part of the Cine Las Americas International Film Festival on April 24th at 4pm at Alamo Draft House on South Lamar. The movie was filmed last July in Elsa, Edinburg and McAllen Texas. The co-writer David Rice is from Edcouch and he and Valente were childhood friends who were able to bring the movie to the valley. Gone Hollywood was shown in San Deigo California on March 11th as part of the San Deigo Indifest film festival and is now making its way to Austin, but some of you lucky ones here in South Texas might have had a chance to see the film in McAllen at Cine El Rey on March 4th, where over 800 people attended. The response was good in the valley and it was good in San Deigo California. Lets see what Austin Texas thinks. We think they might like a taste of some valley humor too. Gone Hollywood stars Fernando Carrillo, Valente Rodriguez, Erlinda Orozco, Daniel Lujan, Saad Jafri and Andrea Garcia of Mission, Texas among several other local crew member. It was directed by Demetrius Navarro. Written by Demetrius Navarro and David Rice.

Sabina Peña

Pioneer

Sabina demonstrates a powerful and balanced golf swing driven by her strong shoulders and legs. Sabina is likely to be seated as the Valleys #1 women’s player for the next season.

Sabina finished-off the 2010 season with a 1st. Place victory at the South Texas Junior Golf Classic scoring 8 birdies in the final round! Sabina is also seeded in first position for the Junior Amateur Invitational with a score of 74.

Because of the higher level of competition on

the LPGA tour the popularity of women’s golf is on a steep accent worldwide. Once dominated by Americans, and later, by Lorena Ochoa, the sport and the players have seen a shift in the top worldwide rankings beyond our borders. Now, players from Europe and the Pacific Rim are in the lime-light. From Germany to Spain and from Korea to Singapore challengers are on the doorstep. But there is promising hope on the distant horizon, coming from our own backyard with Sharyland’s, Sabina Peña. Sabina is 14 years old, but already is considered a favorite contender for #1 ranking in the district as she enters high school next year as a freshman. She has assorted a number of titles in junior golf events in the Valley and around Texas–placing 4th at the 2010 STPGA cham-

page 24 ContempoMag.com

pionships and earning a spot at the Administaff Pro-Am championship at the Woodlands. Taking no prisoners, Sabina finished-off the 2010 season with a 1st. Place victory at the South Texas Junior Golf Classic scoring 8 birdies in the final round! Sabina has also qualified for the Junior Amateur Invitational and is seeded in first position with a score of 74. This next year’s freshman won the Cimarron Junior Championship, taking on the guys, with a two round score of 72-76! At age 11 Sabina was introduced to golf by her dad, Mexican professional golfer-Jose Peña and her mom, Luz Peña. Her home course is the Club at Cimarron where she can be seen working on her game everyday. Will Borowski, at the club, gives her day-to-day instruction to help

prepare Sabina for upcoming tournaments. Sabina has a strong and graceful golf swing that is powered by a fitness program and her love for swimming (she has won numerous competitive swimming titles). Her avg. driving distance off the tee is approaching 245 yards and Sabina consistently plays to a 4 handicap–not bad for age 14. There is no doubt that all eyes will be on Sabina Peña as she enters high school district competition for Sharyland this fall.

Sabina’s Goals:

To make straight A’s in high school, to perform well for the Sharyland Golf Team and to improve her short game. After that, it’s all about winning five majors on the LPGA tour! She has a super at-ease demeanor that I am sure will hold up, one day, in the most challenging of play-offs. We wish our new Contempo Pioneer, Sabina Peña, the best of luck as she launches into what will be a very exciting journey to the evermore popular realm of women’s golf.

When he saw the crowds, he went up the mountain, and after he had sat down, his disciples came to him. He began to teach them, saying: "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land. Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Life insurance premiums are near historic lows. Term life insurance premiums have dropped to levels not seen in years. Do you have enough coverage to support your loved ones? Now is a good time to provide more protection for your family. Call today for a free, no-obligation life insurance review. This review is not, in any way, intended as an invitation to replace your existing policy coverage. Such an exchange is often not suitable due to such factors as surrender charges on your existing contract, the surrender charge period on the new contract, transaction costs associated with the exchange, the values of the new contract versus the old contract, and the various fees and expenses associated with the new product. Mayor Richard Cortez dedicates groundbreaking

You really can’t see much going on be-

yond the berm to the east while driving along N. 2nd Street, but your in for a pleasant McAllen park surprise. Fireman’s Park, which starts at the southwest corner of 2nd and Business 83 in McAllen is in the process of a big facelift. The new expanded park houses the old water treatment plant facilities that are being incorporated into the park design. Fireman’s Park is a project that is funded by the City of McAllen and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department through a grant. The park will have a lake, fishing pier and pavilion, kayak and canoe rentals, a walking trail, picnic facilities, playground areas and a larger picnic reservation area among other features. The park is unique in that it will include the old water treatment plant facilities in the design and use of the park. The park will also incorporate the exsisting irrigation canal that runs along the west end. Construction is currently underway with a completion date of late fall 2011.
