GOV. RICK PERRY / REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE / TEXAS GOVERNOR Governor Perry took a stand on one of the most important women’s health issues to cross the political pathway by executive order, although the effort was rescinded in the Texas State Legislature. His order, to mandate an effective and economical immunization for adolescent women to receive the HVP vaccine that could reverse the spread of deadly cervical cancer. The Center for Disease Control has confirmed that HVP is the most commonly transmitted viral infection in young adults and that it is the number one cause of cervical cancer in young women, while men have few symptoms their is a link established to genital warts which the vaccine is also effective in preventing. Before the availability of this vaccine physicians could only diagnose, and annually monitor a women’s condition after the virus had been detected, awaiting an incidence of one out of ten of his female patients ultimately acquiring cervical cancer from the exposure. With over half the population exsposed, and with a particular concern for women’s health,

Perry made a wise decision for women of Texas that will, in the end, be looked at as a practical political decision rather than as a political opportunity. It is kind of like the Nixon checkmate in China. Who expected a conservative anti-communist to open the door to China and advance capitalism at the same time. That initiative also brought Soviets to concede on strategic neuclear missle talks of the 1970’s. But was it something a conservative would do? No. It was an act of wisdom. The same goes true for Perry. As it sinks in Conservatives will get the picture and realize that the vaccine could ultimately, prevent billions of dollars in hospitalizations and deaths, and enable our reduced health care funds to be redirected, once newer research shows that the onset of the disease and incidence is probably sooner and higher. Odds are that some young woman they know personally, someone who they never thought could be exposed to it, gets it. And then, that should convince the last few conservatives who don’t see eye to eye with presidential political candidate, Gov. Rick Perry. This is the mark of a true statesmen and enhances Perry’s political posture going into a general election, making him more “electable”. It also demonstrates great foresight since it will be imperative for the Republicans to nominate a fiscal conservative with moderate social leanings if they want to beat Obama.

National Hispanic Heritage Month “Many Backgrounds, Many Stories… One American Spirit”

Rita Hayworth– Latina Film Star of the 1940’s Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heri-

tage Month from September 15 to October 15. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. This year’s theme, “Many Backgrounds, Many stories... One American Spirit” emphasizes the broad diversity of culture represented by Hispanic Americans. The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. Born as Margarita Carmen Cansino in Brooklyn, New York, Hayworth was the daughter of Spanish dancer Eduardo Cansino, Sr. and Ziegfeld girl Volga Hayworth who was of Irish and English descent. She was raised as a Roman Catholic. Her father wanted her to become a dancer while her mother hoped she would become an actress. Her grandfather, Antonio Cansino, was the most renowned exponent in his day of Spain’s classical dances; he made the bolero famous. His dancing school in Madrid was world famous.

H

ayworth was a top glamour girl in the 1940s. She was a pin-up girl for military servicemen and a beauty icon for women. At 5'6" (168 cm) and 120 lb (55 kgs) she was tall enough for her height to be a concern to dancing partners like Fred Astaire. Hayworth got her big motion picture break because she was willing to change her hair color whereas another actress was unwilling. She reportedly changed her hair color eight times in eight movies. In 1949 Hayworth's lips were voted best in the world by the Artists League of America. She had a modeling contract with Max Factor to promote its Tru-Color lipsticks and Pan-Stik make-up.

Embassy Suites Hotel Hosts 2nd Annual Top Chef Competition

The RGV Top Chef competition has become one of the premier culinary events in the Rio Grande Valley, and a supportive fund raiser for the research and programs of the March of Dimes that benefit premature infants who suffer from birth defects. For more than 65 years, the March of Dimes has been leading the fight against premature birth, birth defects and infant mortality. The RGV Top Chef fund raising efforts will allow the March of Dimes to have a significant impact in the Rio Grande Valley and the surrounding communities by funding research and programs that are working to give every child a healthy start in life. This year’s event helped to improve their quality of life in the Rio Grande Valley and assist the March of Dimes in addressing a variety of issues related to premature births, leading to healthy children and families here in our area.

page 22 ContempoMag.com

Over 250 supporters attended this year’s event, held at the Embassy Suites Grand Ballroom on Wednesday, August 31st. Guests sampled culinary delights from El Divino, Jaber’s, Santa Fe Steakhouse, Remington’s, Zushi and others, while Fiorella captured first place followed by Remmington’s taking second place. Joe Brown did a particularly good job working the crowd as the public auctioneer. Like Mr. Sharmin, he is a squeezer and helped make the fund raising a lot more dramatic!

If you have questions regarding the event, or would like to make a donation call the March of Dimes office at (956) 682-7114.

VERONICA GONZALES / DISTRICT 40 DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE / DISTRICT 41 TEXAS HOUSE REP. Rep. Gonzales is extremely well grounded in the issues that effect the Upper Valley and took the brunt of the Republican assault of redistricting district rep. seats to favor republican candidates. She has served four terms as a moderate democrat in a district that kept re-electing her for her sensible policies and her open door approach to government. Gonzales has an impressive track record that includes hands on attention on border security issues as the chairwomen of the Border and Intergovernmental Affairs Committee of the Texas House of Representatives. She is a successful business women at her law practice in McAllen and she is supportive advocate for women’s and children’s health issues. But, most importantly, she spends a lot of time in her district seriously listening to her constituents. She would have been easily re-elected for a fifth term in District 41, and now readies for a first term campaign as state rep. for District 40 since the redistricting left only her home within her old district lines.

She is positioned to take on more leadership roles within the Democratic Party ranks if elected to the District 40 seat next year.

MICHELE BACHMANN / REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE / MINNESOTA CONGRESSWOMAN Bachmann really blew it big time when, during the republican primary debates, she blasted Perry on the HVP issue as an immoral decision and tried to get glossy with a false reference to mental retardation being linked to the HVP vaccine, all the while, not looking Perry in the eye. Can you imagine her negotiating with the Chinese one day as president, while she stares off into space with a blank look on her face, the way she did in that debate exchange?

BARACH OBAMA / DEMOCRATIC PARTY CANDIDATE / U.S. PRESIDENT The President is running out of wiggle room and it is time for him to make a swift pivot towards the center. Drafted as a quick fix, the Stimulus Package put too much money in too few hands. Much of it for infrastructure, like his current proposal, it stimulated too few sectors of the economy and two few in each sector. Funded projects were determined by politicians not by the established needs of the marketplace and it’s consumers.

Pioneer

ANTONIO NAIM by Ralph Magaña

They ascended from the crossroads of civilization where the likes of Julius Caesar, Alexander and Cyrus the Great once traveled. Phoenicians dominated maritime trade in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea over 5000 years ago and colonized outposts as far away as the coast of Spain. People of Lebanese decent have settled all over the world, including Central Mexico, where they established close bonds with familiar Latin cultures. Today, we find a significant population of their descendants settling into the Upper Valley like Antonio Naim Jr. and his family who came here from Mexico City, Mexico a little over ten years ago. Tony came to America with a fresh attitude about business opportunities and has been busy in the Upper Valley applying his creativity. He and his brother have started a dozen area entertainment venues and eateries beginning with Blue Aquarium and Umai Sushi Bar. Their “game changer” start-up TAO in north McAllen celebrated an avant guard and sophisticated look that set a new standard in . With further collaborations they later opened Le Rouge, Love, Pasha and other establishments in Downtown Entertainment District of McAllen. Like many immigrants who have lived under less democratic societies, Tony enjoys supporting the election of qualified local candidates such as Sheriff Lupe Treviño and county judge, Ramon Garcia who have distinguished themselves in a productive and ethical way in office. He is also very proud of his family heritage as are they. The closely clustered characteristic of Mexican family lifestyle is most evident in his daily routine and at special events like Tony’s birthday party on August 10th. page 32 ContempoMag.com

Tony celebrated his 26th birthday at his home in Mission with family and friends in traditional Lebanese custom with ethnic foods and even included a little “Hookah”. There, about 50 people comprised mostly of family and close friends converged at their home in Cimarron to celebrate and enjoy the good company. What a warm welcome and great time I had mingling and talking to them all about their unique experiences and

how they adjusted to Valley life. It is exciting to meet the many people who come to the Valley from distant cultures and the Naims are no exception. Probably the most notable take-away one has after getting to know them beyond their sincere hospitality is an unwavering sense of optimism they all project and share–It’s quite contagious. We warmly congratulate Tony on his 26th birthday milestone and further for his endeavouring optimism about our Valley future. the Valley’s No. 1 On-Line Magazine

HOME PROJECT HOME FACE-LIFT FOR VALUE & COMFORT with OUTSLATION by DRIVIT By Ralph Magaña

W

e all have given some thought, from time to time, about what we can do to make our homes more livable, attractive, resource efficient and more valuable. Here, we present some simple projects that address all of the above in a economic way and that offer, for a short time, the benefit of federal tax credits for doing so. Ultimately, these improvements will also leave you with a way to dramatically lower your home energy usage and bills. For the average home in the Valley residents are spending 25% more for utilities than they did just five years ago and there are high expectations for this allocation to rise. The world is getting busier, regardless of the economic decline, and the cost of power will continue to rise as well, leaving us with only conservation alternatives in hopes of reducing the expense of powering our homes. The government knows this and encourages us to invest in home improvements that help reduce energy demand by continuing to offer substantial federal income tax credits. The use of EIFS, short for Engineered Insulation Foam Systems, to resurface your exterior wallswhole or in part, will greatly improve your wall insulation and at the same time, give your home a beautiful face-lift with a multitude of surface effects and colors to select from. Although many other new surfaces have entered the industry, EIFS represents the most economically feasible method for a home improvement application. This is because of it’s speed of application and because it requires no additional footing support below grade. It’s other advantages are many as it improves exterior appearances in a variety of ways. EIFS, when applied to an exterior remodeling situation, is fast, long lasting and can be applied over existing brick or traditional stucco. The process consists of an application of polystyrene (foam) panels that are typically 2’x 4’ by any thickness you prefer with a base coat of special cement as an adhesive. The second layer of fiberpage 34 ContempoMag.com

mesh material and more base coat makes the wall cohesive and perfectly level. A finish coat that usually consists of cement, elastic materials, sand and color give the wall texture tone, and a shield that is impervious to water penetration. Things to consider: All exterior receptacle outlets and hose bibs will need to be projected out to the newer, raised surface. You will also need a roofer to replace the parapet caps (the galvanized metal tops over flat roof walls). These are simple and easy to achieve with minimal cost, time, and effort. UNIVERSAL FEATURES of EIFS -EIFS leaves a exterior wall free from unattractive wall indulation, since the EIFS wall is screeded perfectly level before the base coat is applied. Therefore, it shows less noon time shadows vs. traditional stucco surfaces. -EIFS improves the wall insulation by a factor of 30%, depending on selected thickness. This will reduce A/C workload and your electrical bills

without sacrificing comfort. It also is a great material for sound insulation if you live near a busy highway. -By thickening the walls it improves the overall exterior appearance where wall penetrations, like windows and doors openings, without the need for mouldings. -EFIS is highly flexible and does not respond to climate extremes. It can be applied over cracked traditional stucco walls without incident and weathers well in humid climates to reduce mildew, keeping EIFS walls fresher looking over time. -Considering all it’s advantages over other surfaces for producing an exterior face-lift it remains one of the most economical to choose from. COSTS and SAVINGS This is where the big advantages are apparent versus other available options. Using the high performance DRIVIT systems at a thickness of 1and a half inches, overall you might spend about $3 to $4 per square foot including labor and materials. Adding EFIS to your mix of home improvements

is assuring that you are not only beautifying, but also reducing your routine energy bills, particularly in the summer months when South Texas energy demand and costs rise. Other incidentals may include roofing and electrical services to remove and then replace wall mounted light fixtures after the EIFS surfacing is complete and trash removal. The impact of these can be estimated at about $0.25 per square foot of wall surface area. In addition to the wall application, window and door mouldings can be built up over the EIFS wall to add architectural styling impact. At a local DRIVIT showroom you can see different many versions of decorative pieces molded from EIFS, lightweight concrete or more traditional materials like cantera or travertino.
