Mother Jones ‘Visits’ Green Hills
Heritage Resident Peggy Orner recently put on a one-woman show on the life of firebrand Mary Harris, also known as Mother Jones (1837-1930). Peggy has been touring and performing the role for over a decade, portraying the challenges Mother Jones faced as she traveled all over the US fighting on behalf of poor workers and educating them on the benefits of belonging to a union. She was an organizer for the United Mine Workers but never took orders from anyone. Over 15,000 came to Mother Jones’s funeral in Mt. Olive, Illinois.
