annual Wheel Master Meeting took place this past Saturday, April 1st at TMC’s headquarters in Des Moines, Iowa.
TMC’s
The recipient of the 2016 Wheel Master award was George Calore, who with nearly two decades of service and over 1.5 million safe driving miles, humbly accepted the award before a room full of his peers and TMC management.
The Wheel Master award was created as a way to recognize TMC’s best drivers. Each year a driver is honored with the Wheel Master distinction based on years of service with the company, safe driving record and overall quality performance.
“I’m still on cloud nine,” George said as he was presented with a plaque and ‘TMC Wheel Master’ ring. “This is such a great honor to be called a TMC Wheel Master.”
The meeting brought in Wheel Masters both past and present, and also served as a platform to induct the newest Wheel Master into the prestigious order.
“It’s always a great event we look forward to every year as we announce the latest Wheel Master recipient,” says Glen McCravy, Executive Vice President of Risk Management and Human Resources. “When you get 19 drivers in a room who represent

447 years of safe driving, totaling 52,255,137 safe miles, it is exciting and humbling to think about all that they have achieved. These drivers are not just great drivers, but they are great people. They excel in every area of their job with immeasurable professionalism, and Mr. Calore fits right in with this group of gentlemen. He is like an expensive watch, always on time and just keeps working.” In addition to the quality time together, we enjoyed a great lunch and plenty of laughter. At this meeting, there are no job titles, just a group of friends who respect one another and enjoy each other’s company. Once again, congratulations to George in receiving the most esteemed title awarded at TMC. ‹

TMC Wheel Master Transportation has named George Calore of Willoughby, Ohio as the recipient of the highest driver honor given by TMC, the Wheel Master Award for 2016. George has been driving with TMC for a collective 20 years. He is the epitome of an industry veteran, having had 17 years of experience as an owner-operator before joining our fleet. Though it’s not your typical nine to five job, George describes the trucking industry as his “bread and butter”.
that if I ever sold my trucks, I would go to TMC.”

“I am so humbled. When I first started at TMC, I heard about the Wheel Master title, but I never imagined it was really achievable for me. I’m just a regular driver, out there doing my own thing,” expressed George. Making the transition from an owner-operator to a company driver was surprisingly simple for George. He was trying to raise a family and it was getting difficult to afford fuel and breakdowns. In 1992 he sold his own trucks and began driving for fellow owner-operators, but he missed the

He soon chose to make the move to ‘company driver’, and it was one company in particular that caught his attention. “I used to load right beside these clean, new trucks in Cleveland, Ohio that said ‘The Mickow Corporation’ on the side of them,” George says. In the early eighties, TMC was still very small and operating under ‘The Mickow Corporation’. “I told myself
TMC has grown immensely since George first started here—but the one constant has been the hard work and dedication that it takes to be a successful driver and meet the company’s high standards. “To be a successful driver, you have to have the mindset that you’re going to get the job done right,” he says. “Trucking is a lifestyle. You have to not only enjoy it, but adjust your life to it.” “George gives 100 percent effort every day and is a true professional,” says Jeff Bleadorn, George’s Fleet Manager. ongratulations to Oscar Gore for being named TMC’s Driver of the Third Quarter for 2016! Oscar is a veteran of the transportation industry. He has been a professional truck driver with TMC for 17 years, and also has 20 years in the railroad industry under his belt. Based out of North Carolina, Oscar knew from a young age that he wanted to drive a big rig. He enjoys being able to see the country and has a goal of visiting all 50 states. Oscar has driven over 1.6 MILLION safe miles during his time here at TMC. “Every day I make the decision to be the best driver on the road.” says Oscar. “This job is not easy, but safety is at the forefront of success.” In the trucking industry, attaining the level of achievement that Oscar has is quite a feat. Oscar insists that his successes are due to his keen attention to detail, and that more drivers can be as suc-

ith over 1.2 million safe driving miles and 10 years at TMC, Tim Alford is a shining example of TMC’s motto, ‘Destination: Excellence’. Committed to doing everything right while out on the road, Tim is driven to be successful. “You have to want to do this,” he says. “Trucking is a lifestyle, not a job. Your truck is your house and you have to learn to live on the road. If you don’t want it, you won’t be successful. It comes a bit easier for me because I’ve always wanted to do this.” Though flatbed trucking can often be a challenging industry to conquer, TMC has been with Tim every step of the way to help him reach his goals. He credits his former Fleet Manager and current Operations Manager, Kyle Miller, with giving him the push he needed to succeed. “I struggled when I first started, but when Kyle became my Fleet Manager, he changed my attitude,” Tim explains. “That’s the thing I love most about TMC. I’ve got a great team of people to back me up. I know if I put in 100%, they will too.”
In addition to being one of TMC’s top earning over-the-road truck drivers, Tim also helps mold the future of TMC as a driver trainer. He shows rookie drivers the ropes to the flatbed industry while teaching them to be safe and efficient in their new career. Tim was named Trainer of the Month in January of 2016 as a result of his dedication. Chris York, former TMC driver and Tim’s Fleet Manager, has nothing but great things to say about him. “He goes above and beyond in every situation and makes sure that everything he and his trainees do is up to TMC standards. He has never said no to any favor we have asked of him. Tim is just an all-around fantastic person and what every driver at TMC should strive to be.” For Tim, safety comes first while he is
out on the road. “Pay attention and always expect other people’s actions to be a reflection of yours,” he says. One of Tim’s most memorable loads he hauled was a shipment of building materials that he delivered to the construction site of the Jacob Javits Center in Manhattan. “The places I get to see because of this job are incredible. I love being able to travel all over the country for a living. I appreciate the opportunity TMC has given me.” In his free time, Tim enjoys riding his Harley around his native West Virginia, working on his car and cheering on the Green Bay Packers. Criteria for Driver of the Quarter recognition includes years of service with the company, safe driving record, excellent customer service, professionalism and overall quality performance. Once a driver is recognized as a Driver of the Quarter they are eligible to receive the prestigious Wheel Master Award. ‹

ongratulations to Andrew Theobald, TMC’s Trainer of the Year for 2016! Andy has been a professional truck driver with TMC for nearly seven years, six of which he has been training new TMC drivers.
Training TMC’s Future
Andy enjoys being a driver trainer and helping to groom and build upon the future of TMC. “It is rewarding to watch my trainees get better and progress,” he says. “It is a fast paced process and they’re growing and changing every day. I feel like my hard work is paying off.” With perseverance and dedication, the earning potential at TMC is tremendous. This is a philosophy that Andy instills in his drivers. He advocates that driving your truck and securing your loads is only half of the business. Being safe, vigilant and making good use of your time is essential to being successful in the trucking industry. When a new driver gets in his truck to begin their training period, Andy takes a personalized approach. “I think it is important to cater to the individual needs of each trainee,” he explains. “Every one is different. I like to get on a personal level and relate to them so they feel comfortable in my truck. It makes it easier for them to focus on the task at hand.” “Andy does a great job for TMC as a driver and a trainer,” says Jeff Geist, Training Coordinator Manager. “He is level headed and thorough in his training. His success shows his dedication to doing things right and making sure his drivers are prepared for the job.” Andy lives in Michigan where he enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters. Congratulations to Andy on this astounding accomplishment. We are proud to call him a part of the TMC Family. ‹ Andy Theobald (center) with VP Driver Training, Jeff Wisgerhof (left)

imply put, TMC’s driver trainers shape the future of the company. They are the reason we are able to continue our legacy of having the best drivers on the road. That is why we’ve introduced a token of appreciation specific for driver trainers. All qualified trainers will be formally presented with a black ‘TMC Driver Trainer’ hardhat complete with a decal for each trainee the trainer had that graduated into their own truck. These hardhats will represent the hard work these trainers put forth every day by training our future drivers and helping to promote work safety. Congratulations, and THANK YOU, drivers for your dedication to training excellence. ‹

I
t’s that time of year when folks are tidying up, deep cleaning and making their belongings sparkle! At TMC, however, this isn’t just a seasonal task. We take pride in keeping our trucks and facilities in tip-top shape all year long. The value of appearance is one we take to heart, and our sparkling black and chrome Peterbilts are a shining example of that. Tony Beres ahas been with TMC for over 20 years. From driver, to Safety Manager to his current position as Special Projects Manager, Tony understands the importance of keeping equipment clean and presentable. “Over the years I cannot tell you how many hours/days/weeks of my life I have spent polishing and waxing our equipment. Anymore I generally do not even think about it, as it is just something that is part of what we do here at TMC. Twice in the last year and a half I’ve had the honor of assisting in moving
the Vietnam Veterans Memorial mobile half-scale replica, ‘The Wall That Heals’. Most recently in October of 2016 we hauled it from Richmond, Indiana to Living History Farms in Des Moines. Once we arrived at our destination and started to set it up, I overheard a couple gentlemen over my shoulder talking about how nice our truck was. One of them made the comment, “That is TMC. They are famous for having clean trucks.” That got me thinking about the Army of people it takes to keep our fleet standing tall and maintaining that reputation we have worked so hard to earn over many years. You have the guys up at Century Truck & Body that spend countless hours sanding, painting and hanging replacement parts. Our technicians in our shops that make sure our equipment is checked out prior to leaving a terminal to make sure that nothing hits the road until it is up to TMC standards. Not to mention all the folks that work in our Appearance Department. I cannot imagine how many trucks they have washed and how many wheels they

have buffed out over the years. Lastly, there are our drivers who maintain our appearance out on the road day in and day out. When people find out I work for TMC, it never fails. The first thing they say is “oh you are the folks with those clean trucks. You guys have some of the best looking equipment on the road.” To this day I still remember the first time I saw a TMC truck. It was in the summer of 1988 on I-74, mile marker 71 heading east bound going through central Illinois. I will never forget the sense of pride it instilled in me seeing that T-600 pulling an East trailer going down the interstate. I knew in that moment this is where I wanted to work. 28 years later I still have that same sense of pride when I see one of our trucks standing tall going down the road.” So as flowers begin to bloom and folks around the nation begin to dig into their Spring-cleaning duties, we’ll still be hard at work doing what we do best no matter the season; taking pride in our ride! ‹

Heard from the Road “In January, Darren Johnson, #10779, hauled the first load for a newly acquired customer. The manager called shortly after to compliment him on a job well done. He said Darren was very professional and when he pulled the tarp off the truck, the product looked pristine and securement was top notch. Congrats to Darren for making an excellent first impression!”-Justyn Hardy, Public Relations Manager
“A Shipper Manager from Owen Corp called in with a compliment, saying our drivers were very friendly and easy to work with. She said they really help make her job easy on days like today, and over all, she really appreciates TMC, our drivers, and how nice our trucks look.”
Kyle Bursey, #10395, gave a new customer a very positive first impression of TMC. Their VP of Operations called to say that Kyle was extremely polite and professional while he was on site. She continued on to say she would love to load TMC trucks daily based on this first experience and thanked Kyle for his great work.” -Chris Caudill, Fleet Manager
“The Traffic Manager at Kloeckner Metals, Tim, called to let us know that the driver of truck 11554, Jesse Beasley, was great. He checked in and then went and helped another TMC driver roll his tarps and finish up. Tim said that was not unique because a lot of our drivers do that, but said Jesse also helped his company drivers get their loads tarped. Jesse told Tim ‘the faster they get out, the faster I get in’. Tim was extremely impressed with Jesse and said to send him back every day.”-Jerry Adams, Regional VP, Business Development
“I just took a phone call from a gentleman who has been driving busses in Florida since 1974. He said he sees our trucks daily and can pick them out because they are so clean and neat, the tarp jobs are “snapped down tight” and our drivers are the most courteous on the road. He said our pride is obvious.” -Jannelle Kennedy, Safety Manager
“A customer in Kentucky called in to tell us that our driver, Tyler Ferrell, #11276, that delivered today was by far the most professional driver he has ever had to deliver to him. The customer added that he asked the driver to move the load to a specific area and our driver put the load exactly where he wanted it on the first try. I sent Mr. Ferrell a message thanking him for making such a great impression.” -Jerry Adams, Regional VP, Business Development “I was travelling to work on I-22 this morning in Hamilton and I had a tire blow out on me and I couldn't get over to a shoulder for about a quarter of a mile. I was so scared I was going to get rear ended, but one of your trucks slowed down behind me with his emergency lights flashing and followed me really slow to make sure I was safe getting to a shoulder before going on. I was hoping you guys could reach out to Joshua Richardson in truck #10265 and let him know I am really grateful for their random act of kindness on what was a terrible morning for me. Thanks!”-Andrew L., Motorist
“While at a rest stop on last Wednesday afternoon (1/13) (I-75 north near Chattanooga), one of your beautiful new rigs pulled in. I had to meet your driver and get a few pictures. It was Kevin Shipley in truck #10757. He lives in Atlanta and was on his way with a load to Columbus, OH. He was a very nice person and was so proud to be driving for you. I asked him how he liked driving the best rig on the road and asked if he got comments, etc. from other drivers. He said proudly "all the time".”-Gary Y., FCC Finance
“Tom Shirland in #10662 is a great guy and very helpful. He helped me secure a load and talked me through it. I asked him if he was a trainer, and when he told me he wasn’t I said he should consider it. He gave me his phone number and has called and asked me how I was doing. He told me if I ever need anything to give him a call. Tom is a great employee and has nothing but respect for the company and the people of TMC.”-Harold Hoskins, TMC Driver, #10662
“Nick Miller in truck #11245 was extremely helpful in teaching me how a dedicated load was operating day to day, product placement, as well directions to shipper, consignee, and routes back and forth. He always pitched in with the process of loading and/or unloading every time he and I were present at the same time. He is perfect example of a TMC professional driver. I was very impressed with his dedication to Destination: Excellence.” -Philip Summerville, TMC Driver, #10969
"Our own Jon Alo in #11604 was one of the first responders, along with three nurses and a military medic just returning from Iraq, at the scene of an car vs. bicycle accident on I-30 in Ft. Worth, TX on Monday, March 27th that occurred right in front of him. Jon has prior first responder training and was able to report the victim’s injuries to medical staff to ensure swift and proper care. Jon also used his truck and trailer to block the lanes of traffic as they were going to try to land a medivac to airlift the victim. We are so grateful for employees like Mr. Alo. Situations like this can happen at any moment’s notice, and while they are unfortunate events that no-one wishes to be a part of, calmly taking quick control of the situation can often mean the difference between life and death. We salute you, Jon, and thank you for representing TMC so greatly."
