TMC’s Driver of the Quarter designation is one reserved for professional drivers that go beyond the call of duty. They embrace the lifestyle and live the TMC motto, Destination: Excellence. Joe Ingram came to TMC looking for a new work environment with a familiar setting: the open road. After doing his research, he discovered the Black and Chrome and decided it would be the perfect place for him. After officially joining the team in May 2010, Joe quickly discovered that he found the right place. “I have always felt at home here, and it’s been a great fit from the very beginning,” he says. In August 2015, Joe felt it was time for him to take on the training role. “I believed that I had a lot of

However, Joe’s not here for the accolades. He also emphasizes the importance of camaraderie in what can be an unforgiving industry. “I think it is important to lend a hand while you’re out on the road. I never stray away from helping out other drivers.” He also stresses the value of drivers seeking help in situations big and small. “Never try to be in too big of a rush, and never be afraid to ask questions.” After nine years with TMC, Joe looks forward to continuing his career with the Black and Chrome Family while assisting in its growth and success through training.

Like Joe, Mike Pennington also utilizes the training role to give back to the company. A 15 year veteran of the trucking industry, Mike started his professional driving career with TMC in May 2004 and went on to become a driver trainer four years later. Mike says he knew TMC was a good fit from day one. “I’ve always liked the job and work that I do, and it’s continued to be something I enjoy and look forward to each day,” he says. In June 2018, Mike was named TMC’s Trainer of the Month for his outstanding efforts in shaping the future of TMC. “I wanted to make a difference in the company and make sure new guys were getting things done the right way,” he says. When it comes to his training,
the Bluefield, W. Va. native keeps safety at the forefront of everything he does. “Drivers should always focus on operating the truck safely first, and pay extra attention to load securement,” says Mike. “If you take your time and do these things correctly, everything else comes together pretty easily.” “Mike is one of the cornerstones of my fleet and also for TMC,” says his Fleet Manager, Pat Barr. “He is ranked in the top 10% of all drivers at TMC for revenue, has 1,764,119 safe miles. Mike often has a trainee with him that he spends the needed time with to ensure they know the job when they get their own truck. Mike cares about his co-drivers and doing the job right, and does so in a low key, get the job done without fanfare sort of way. It is a privilege and honor to get to work with Mike day in and day out.” Congratulations, gentlemen, on this well-deserved distinction!
Criteria for Driver of the Quarter recognition includes years of service with the company, safe driving record, excellent customer service, professionalism, and overall quality performance. Once a driver is recognized as a Driver of the Quarter they are eligible to receive the prestigious Wheel Master Award.
TMC Transportation Earns Top Ten Military Friendly® Employer Designation for 2020 TMC is once again recognized as a Top Ten Military Friendly Employer. Institutions earning the Military Friendly ® Employer designation were evaluated using both public data sources and responses from a proprietary survey. More than 200 companies participated in the Military Friendly ® Employers portion of the 2020 Military Friendly ® Companies survey. Methodology, criteria, and weightings were determined by VIQTORY with input from the Military Friendly ® Advisory Council of independent leaders in the higher education and military recruitment community. Final ratings were determined by combining an organization’s survey score with an assessment of the organization’s ability to meet thresholds for Applicant, New Hire Retention, Employee Turnover, and Promotion & Advancement of veterans and military employees.

was thrilled to have two professional truck drivers representing the company as top ten finalists in two separate award programs this past weekend at the Great American Trucking Show in Dallas, TX. The annual programs, Trucking’s Top Rookie and Transition Trucking: Driving for Excellence, celebrate drivers new to the trucking industry. Chris Bacon, who was named a top ten finalist in the Transition Trucking award program last month, was among three other drivers from various carriers announced to advance to the next phase.

Chris, a 31 year-old native of the St. Louis, MO area and a United States Marine Corps Veteran, served two combat tours. He worked as an Anti-tank Missileman during his time in Afghanistan and Iraq. After an honorable discharge in 2010, Chris worked as an automotive technician and service advisor before deciding to fulfill his dream of becoming a truck driver as his grandfather and great grandfather had done. Chris earned his Class A CDL at MTC Driver Training and went to work for TMC Transportation as a professional flatbed truck
The program serves as a platform to inspire the hiring of more veterans, National Guard members, and reservists. Deserving veteran drivers who have made a successful transition from military service to the trucking industry are recognized and awarded for their success.

driver. Chris traveled to Washington D.C. in December where the winner of the Transition Trucking: Driver for Excellence was announced. While Chris did not take home the top prize, he was the third runnerup and took home $5,000 and memories to last a lifetime.

industry, Tyria spent two years as the Assistant Coach of the McNeese State University women’s basketball team. She then turned her attention to shaping the young minds in her community as a high school U.S. History teacher and student counselor. In October 2018, Tyria decided it was time for a change of pace and enrolled at Diesel Driving Academy where she obtained her CDL. She didn’t know much about the trucking industry, but she saw it as a challenge she was determined to take on. Upon joining the Black and Chrome fleet, Tyria quickly made a name for herself in the male dominated industry. Coupled with a patient and encouraging trainer, Tyria quickly mastered the art of flatbedding.

weekend at Iowa Speedway! We had a fantastic turnout for our annual TMC at the Track employee outing.
Over one thousand TMC employees and their family and friends filling the stands for Michael Annett’s, a Des Moines native, home game. Race day kicked off with a lively pre-race tailgate, and everyone got to enjoy lunch from our very own Chrome Café and Baymont Inn banquet staff. Burgers, brats, and other tailgate staples were served up next to a shiny Black and Chrome truck. Michael Annett and his crew chief, Travis Mack, made a special appearance at the TMC
tailgate tent to greet the crowd and answer questions alongside Lou Sipolt, host of IowaLive on CW Iowa 23 and track announcer at the Iowa Speedway. Michael rounded out his visit by taking time to sign autographs and take pictures with his biggest fans. New at the tailgate this year was a raffle run by a few of our Family Assistance Fund (FAF) team members. Sponsored by our gracious partners, raffle prizes included Yeti coolers, Cabela’s gift packs, Lucas Oil detailing kits, and race memorabilia autographed by JR Motorsports team members (including Dale Jr. himself!). All proceeds from the raffle went towards FAF, which was created to provide assistance and support to employees in times of

need. As engines revved and the Xfinity Series U.S. Cellular 250 was ready to begin, fans took their TMC pride to the stands. A sea of charcoal gray t-shirts with the orange and gold TMC logo provided the loudest applause during driver introductions as Michael stepped onto the track. Michael started the race in 9th and fell to 10th for most of Stage One while trying to switch from the inside lane. Before the end of Stage One, a crash moved him back up to 9th in the restart. During Stage 2, Michael moved up to 7th after falling briefly to 11th. He held that spot for the restart of Stage Three. Michael saw quite a few position
changes during this final stage, even encountering a minor spinout, which he quickly recovered from thanks to his quick thinking pit crew. When it was all said and done, Michael finished the race in 10th. This was his 13th top-10 finish in 19 races this season and eighth in the last 10 events.

This year’s TMC at the Track held the largest attendance
NASCAR XFINITY SERIES PLAYOFF RECAP Michael Annett was the first driver to qualify for the NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs by winning the opening race of the season at Daytona International Speedway. This gave Michael and crew chief, Travis Mack, plenty of time to plan for the playoffs. The first race was at Richmond Raceway on September 20. Michael drove his Pilot Flying J Chevrolet across the finish line in 4th place, his 16th top-10 finish of the season. This put him in sixth place in series points and put more distance between him and the cutoff to the Round of 8. The following playoff race on the Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval on September 28 didn’t go as well as the first race in Richmond. Despite suffering front-end damage on an early restart, Michael was able to finish the race in 15th place. Even though it wasn’t the top10 placement the team was looking for, they still finished the race ahead of three other big contenders. The third race on October 5 at
Dover International Speedway was Michael’s best performance in the postseason so far. He drove his black and gold TMC Transportation Chevrolet into 6th place, punching his ticket to the Round of 8. The top-10 finish was also his 17th of the season, which tied his career-best season total from 2012. On October 19 at Kansas Speedway, Michael drove to a fourth place finish. This moved him up a spot in the point standings with two races left to determine the Championship 4. The following races in Texas and Phoenix resulted in 11th and 9th place finishes. This lead to a season-ending race at Homestead Miami Speedway on November 16, where Michael placed in 11th. The year 2019 turned into Michael’s most successful season in the series. Along with his victory at Daytona, Michael tied his career best six top-five finishes and set a new personal record with 19 top-10 finishes. He ended the season ninth in series points.

Appreciation Week Driver 2019 was another one for
the books! We proved again this year that nobody does DAW like TMC. We truly have the most dedicated and professional drivers on the road, and we applaud them for the hard work they bring forth to keep America moving. New this year, we hosted a Kickoff Cookout at our Des Moines terminal. Dozens of drivers got to begin festivities early and enjoy burgers and brats before heading out on the road for the week. On Monday, the fleet received a message from TMC founder and CEO, Harrold Annett. He said, in part, “Each year Driver Appreciation Week comes and goes, but one thing remains constant all year long. Appreciation. TMC drivers continually prove to be the best and most professional truck drivers in the industry. All of us in the office and shops have nothing but utmost respect for the job that you do day in and day out. We appreciate the hard work, dedication and loyalty you bring to the company, as well as the manner in which you carry the TMC name.” Just as we did last year, the name of every TMC driver was put in a raffle for a chance to win some awesome prizes throughout the week. Each day we went LIVE on our Facebook page to draw names and announce the winners. Among the items given away were Yeti hopper coolers, a variety of gift cards, multiple TV’s, TMC apparel, barstools, and more!
Along with having goodies at all of our terminals, we had several TMC representatives out on the road bringing DAW to our drivers! Many representatives were out at customer and shipper locations to prepare meals, give out our custom 2019 TMC Driver Appreciation Week t-shirts, and lend a helping hand in tarping and strapping drivers’ loads. Our Executive VP of Operations, Travis Johnson, even spent a week on the road, hopping in to ride with multiple drivers across the Midwest. One driver woke up to a surprise during DAW and shared his gratitude on Instagram. Galen Kaylor posted, “I’m in Virginia just sleeping in my truck and someone from TMC rolls up in a car and gives me a shirt, hat and goodie bag. I can’t believe they are going through this much trouble to show the love. Thank you to the TMC family!” No Driver Appreciation Week is complete without FREE FOOD at all of our terminals. Each location had delicious items on the menu throughout the week to keep our drivers fueled up and ready to go! From breakfast to BBQ, grill-outs and sweet treats, there was plenty everywhere to go around. To all of our drivers, there are never enough THANK YOU’s to go around to show all of our gratitude and appreciation for what you do. You continue to work hard and make sacrifices every day to keep TMC the best in the business. You all take Destination: Excellence to the next level, and it never goes unnoticed! Convoy for a Cause TMC once again had
the honor of participating in the annual World’s Largest Truck Convoy to benefit Special Olympics Iowa on Saturday, October 5th. This was a milestone year for TMC, as it was our 15th year participating in the convoy. The rain couldn’t put a damper on the pride of the Black and Chrome! We had 17 TMC drivers participate in the convoy, and there were 112 trucks total for the event. TMC’s Recruiting Department provided coffee
and donuts at registration near the starting point, which was on the SW Connector off of Veterans Parkway in Des Moines.

Love for NASCAR Inspires a Vision on Two Wheels

It’s no secret that TMC has
history on the race track. We love when we can share stories of how racing has influenced someone’s life or inspired a hobby. For TMC driver Brett Niebuhr, embracing a love of racing is helping him stand out in the crowd. When Brett isn’t driving his Black and Chrome Peterbilt (and of course, if the weather is permitting), he can be found riding his 2015 Harley Davidson Ultra-Classic motorcycle. After he initially bought the bike, Brett was constantly asking himself, “What can I do that’s going to make my bike stand out and be unique to me?” The answer came to him when he saw a friend’s bike decked out in a hand-painted Star Wars theme.
“I knew immediately that I wanted to do something similar,” he says. The next question was; what would he have painted on his bike? “I’ve always been a race fan and an Earnhardt fan, so I decided to put Dale Sr. on one side and Dale Jr. on the other,” he says. It all came full circle when Michael Annett, son of TMC CEO Harrold Annett, moved over to JR Motorsports to drive on Dale Jr’s team. “I heard that and thought it was pretty neat, and the paint scheme became even more fitting for my bike.” Tony Sims of Dana, Iowa, did the artwork on the motorcycle. He has his own business titled, Middle of Nowhere Studio. “Tony does amazing work, and I knew

he was the guy who could make my vision come to life,” says Brett. He airbrushed the entire bike by hand, and it took about a month and a half to complete. Sure enough, the bike has gotten plenty of attention. “Race fans especially love it, and there are always people who come up and ask questions about it and want to know more,” Brett says. Pictures of the bike have made their way around TMC, and Kelly Earnhardt (Dale’s sister) has even seen it. “I’m really proud of it and how it turned out.” The ultimate dream for Brett would be to meet Dale Jr. and show him the bike in person. “It would be amazing to show the bike to Dale, and I would love to get his autograph on it.”
