Architecture is a social activity that has to do with some sort of communication or places of interaction, and that to change the environment is to change behavior. _Thom Mayne

Balancing Urban Ecological and Human HEALTH

5

Located in Clemson, SC STORMWATER REHAB began with an urban master-planning excercise that transitioned into building design based on assessed needs of the immidiate context. The proposal focused heavilty on stormwater drainage issues that developed into an eco-friendly micro habitat.

Butterfly roof funnels water into channel.

Dramatic roof articulation for rainfall.

Surface agitation of water begins cleansing process by increasing the oxygen saturation in the water. This helps with the release of noxious gasses such as carbon dioxide, methane, and hydrogen sulfide.

2_runoff reveal

To combat heavy rainfall volumes, each roof has a reflection pond for retention that slowly releases water into cleasing system at managable rate.

A series of terraces provide a long ‘S’ curve for water to pass through. The variety of plant species used each serve to help purify the water.

use it. 5_water collection

Once the stormwater is clean, it trickles into an underground pipe where it is pumped back up to the building.

6_re|use

Water collected is used for flushing toilets, irrigation, and keeping reflection ponds stocked with clean, naturally clear water.

process.

7_ecological health

1_collection

This system is designed to virtually eliminate stormwater runoff from this and adjacent properties. The proposed creek serves simply as a ‘backup plan’ in the event of extreme rainfall. The water retention in the creek provides natural habitat to foster health and biodiversity within the local ecosystem, resulting in a truly natural, and self-sufficient landscape that patients and visitors can enjoy visually from inside or experientially through immersion.
