TCS MAITREE TOASTMASTERS CLUB, MUMBAI CLUB #616631 GLIMPSES JAN – JUN 2017 Dear Toastmasters and Guests, It gives me immense pleasure to open this door for you to walk down the memory lane of our amazing club sessions. Please go through this compilation of select session reports to revisit some of our special moments in this term of Executive Committee. As the Club Secretary, it has been my privilege of creating most of the session reports out of a total count of 28. However, it wouldn’t have been possible to maintain this consistency without the help of my fellow club members Nayan Jain, Bhageswari Sreeraman and Abhinav Korada who proactively lent a hand in making a couple of them. For the benefit of guests, Toastmasters International is a world leader in communication and leadership development. The organization has more than 345,000 memberships. Members improve their speaking and leadership skills by attending meetings at any of the 15,900 clubs in 142 countries that make up a global network of meeting locations. TCS Maitree Toastmasters Club is one of the busiest nodes in this global network and dedicated to the Toastmasters Club Mission: “We provide a supportive and positive learning experience in which members are empowered to develop communication and leadership skills, resulting in greater selfconfidence and personal growth.” Thanks and Regards, Vimarsh Jani Club Secretary Executive Committee: President

Sergeant-at-Arms – Abhinav always adds a different flavour to his role and this time he opened the session with a rhythmic succession of words. Presiding Officer – Faraz with full excitement invited the guests to introduce themselves on stage. Later on he handed over the control to TMOD by briefly mentioning her accomplishments. Toastmaster of the Day Shruti slowed down the river of time as the audience contemplated how they were identified with such objects which may have high survival value but low happiness quotient. She elaborated that the feeling of love is not necessarily romantic. Most importantly, there is self-love which is not narcissistic but a celebration of that part of the universe which we call ‘me’. The members of audience got a chance to say what they wanted to do and by when and hence learnt how they could put their happiness on top of their priority list. Some if not all did say ‘Cheers to me!’ during handshake on stage, as encouraged by the TMOD. She ended with the quote ‘Love yourself and then seek love outside.’

Prepared Speeches Jyoti took the audience on a journey to the beautiful Spiti valley and a distressing truth about tourist callousness and global warming in her CC #4 speech titled Beauty and the Beast. The members of audience were mesmerized by the beauty of the paradise that the Spiti valley is. The magnificent mountains and lakes were almost 3D as they came to life when projected on the screen. Although it wasn’t seen in the photographs, the speaker expressed disappointment on the acts of tourist callousness like spreading garbage around the area carelessly. The signs of global warming were clearly visible by the drop in snowfall. Human beings are but a speck of dust in front of splendid nature and yet they think of themselves in superlatives. The speaker urged that we need to stand up against the destruction of natural environment now or face consequences later. Her speech was evaluated by Nayan. Neeta opened the eyes of all the lazy and #5 speech titled Expect the Unexpected. Nilesh narrated a story about how suppression is not a solution but part of the problem itself in his ACB #1 speech titled Suppression Binds Liberty. He tempted the audience with a chocolate bar while denying it to them at the same time. The message was clear, the more you try not to think about an object, the more you get possessed by the same. He narrated a humorous story about Mulla Nasruddin and his friend Charkha. Nasruddin gave his expensive and attractive clothes to Charkha so that he can wear them and visit a few places in the village. They went together to a couple of houses in their neighbourhood. Nasruddin felt jealous of his friend’s handsome appearance in his own clothes! He was determined that he won’t pay attention or draw attention to his friend’s appearance but invariably did otherwise. In unguarded moments, he spoke of his friend as one who has borrowed his clothes, himself owns the clothes or that he doesn’t want to talk about the attire at all. The message was that one must explore life for all the suitable experiences and live them fully so that there is transcendence rather than perversion. His speech was evaluated by Deepak.

Table Topics Speeches Table Topics Master Sundeep came up with some quotes which were as interesting as their length and encouraged the volunteers to speak a few lines on them. All the speakers did a good job at giving their remarks on the same.

Evaluation

Fiza, the General Evaluator for the meeting, gave a report which was balanced between jovialness and strictness. She led the applause for the first time role players, Timer TM Manohar and Ah Counter TM Gopi. She highlighted the strengths of the role players and addressed specific areas of improvement such as time management of the speech evaluators and special mention of the minimum time limit during Table Topics for the benefit of guests. The speech evaluators gave an in depth report of how well the prepared speakers did and can improve further. The TAG Team - Timer, Ah Counter and Grammarian mostly comprising of first timers did a great job themselves to lead the evaluation of these fundamentals of any speech.

Meeting #442

TCS Maitree Toastmasters Club, Mumbai Friday, 17th Feb 2017, at TCS Neptune

Host: TM Sundeep Theme: Necessity is the mother of invention TM Sundeep, who has got a thing for pioneers of new technology, told the story of Hugh Herr, an American rock climber, engineer, and biophysicist who did the unthinkable by getting back to even more advanced level of climbing after having both his legs amputated below the knees in a snowstorm. He asked everyone to say where they wanted to be in 10 years, a question that reminded a few members of their MBA interviews.

What inspires you to be your best? Luxury is not a necessity - beautiful things are. Habit, if not resisted, soon becomes a necessity. A good opportunity you missed out on when you were younger. When the impossible became possible for you.

"Yesterday is but today's memory, and tomorrow is today's dream." - Kahlil Gibran (quoted by TM Ankit Dasgupta)

P1 (The First Time) Evaluator - TM Saikumar The speaker was a bundle of excitement as he broke the ice with his fellow Toastmasters with an open-hearted address. A dancer, rapper, blogger, and stand-up comedian, he talked of how the first time is always special. His speech was marked by self-confidence, effortless humour and effective body language - hardly the signs of a beginner!

TM Manohar

P2 (The Privilege) Evaluator - TM Rajeswary The speaker talked about gender equality because unfortunately it's something we cannot talk enough about. Hers was not a knee-jerk reaction - she spoke as someone who has seen the world, and she used her own example. The 'male privilege', she said, has to go. Her simple yet critical questions made the audience sit up and introspect. The gist of her speech - "talk about her achievements as a person."

TM Nisha

TM Neeta

P6 (Love Is In the Air) Evaluator - TM Deepak The speaker was clearly (and fondly) still nursing the Valentine's Day hangover. Two chief takeaways from her speech: (1) Love is eternal (2) TM Saikumar is single. She had tips to share on preventing love from fading away. Her love for loving came out so lovely, it was a surprise a few members were not seen holding hands by the time she was finished. After all there's a 'Neeta' somewhere in 'Valentine'.

Sergeant-at-Arms, Abhinav, was the curator of the Art Gallery for the occasion. Presiding Officer, Saikumar, upped the suspense quotient of the meeting room with the dramatic life events of the young inspirational role model before revealing her identity as Malala Yousafzai. Toastmaster of the Day, Radhika, brought to life the seemingly mundane murals that we see at airports and other such places. She touched upon the history and various types of art. The connoisseur of paintings, that the host is, made sure that the members of the audience also learn a thing or two about interpretation of art. The audience understood the nuances of paintings by attempting to interpret 2 paintings; almost analogous to a refined experience at one of the wine tasting festivals. The takeaways were that the art of paintings has evolved from Realism, Impressionism, Surrealism, to Modern Art.

Prepared Speeches Gopi inspired everyone to be patient and determined on their journey to success in his CC #1 speech titled Success is a Journey, not a Destination. The speaker opened his speech with an inspirational quote and emphasized that success comes at a price and the tag demands a lot of hard work and determination. He shared his story of how he hailed from a small village in Karnataka and set foot on the city of dreams, that is, Mumbai. His parents were wise not to go by the locally popular laid back attitude and got their son well educated despite hardships. The obedient son was not only sincere in his efforts but also sacrificed his love of arts for the technicalities of science. He graduated from a reputed engineering institute with the help of sponsorship and bagged his first job in TCS. He continues to romance with arts in his free time and aspires to help students like him to overcome barriers and succeed in life. The audience gave him a standing ovation, as is the custom for CC #1 speech. His speech was evaluated by Nisarg. Manju narrated and acted in a short and sweet skit where a cute little bear was consoled and encouraged by his Nana Bear in her ACB #1 (Story Telling) speech titled The Bear who lost his Boy. The stage was set, mood was tuned and the lovely emotional skit began. The speaker played a series of characters from the narrator, to Nana bear, to the little bear and others! Ted, the little bear, was deeply saddened by the fact that he was separated by Christopher. He poured his heart out in front of his Nana that he is devastated to have lost the best boy in the world! Nana bear, as all grandmothers are, was very compassionate and kind towards the little Ted. She consoled him, encouraged him by such gestures as lending her ear to the outpouring of his feelings and finally hugging him. She described how tears need not be looked down upon and celebrated the way they can cleanse and heal one’s innermost core. Her speech gives strength to someone with a heart ache due to the sudden loss of a loved one as it gives the assurance that the memories of the past can be cherished while looking forward to another chapter of unique and beautiful life experiences. Her speech was evaluated by Chinmaya.

Table Topics Speeches Table Topics Master, Saikumar, presented the volunteers with paintings and they were supposed to interpret the same. The participants who were already charged up with the suaveness of art performed very well while speaking their heart out about the paintings presented to them.

Evaluation

Raunak, the General Evaluator for the meeting, threw some light on the hues of the meeting and suggested how it could have been more colourful. He led the applause for the first time role players, Timer and Speech Evaluator 1. The GE was all praises for the efforts that TMOD and TTM had taken. One piece of advice that the future TTMs can take is to reiterate the minimum time limit for the benefit of the guests. The speech evaluators did an amazing job themselves, that of encouraging their respective speakers by highlighting their strong and improvement areas. The TAG Team - Timer, Ah Counter and Grammarian kept an eye on the temporal contours, speech-killer fillers and English-syntax cracks quite diligently.

“If you could say it in words, there would be no reason to paint.” ~ Edward Hopper Tip of the Day: Pace yourself. People tend to rush when they’re nervous, so practice keeping your speech at a calm, steady pace.

Presiding Officer, Saikumar, concluded the session by announcing dates for upcoming events:   

Sergeant-at-Arms, Bhageswari, gave a musical kickstart to the 450th Session. Presiding Officer, Nisarg, hosted a round of guest introductions who later handed over the control to the Toastmaster of the Day, Shruti. The health of the day was in the experienced hands of Dr. Shruti. She shot out rapid fire questions like the club number, venue for Session #447 – we arrived at the correct venue finally; after covering all the venues, TM Chinmaya’s latest laurels and treated the winners with chocolates!

Prepared Speeches Aparna broke ice with the quote “All the world’s a stage and all men and women merely players” in her CC #1 speech titled Miles to Go Before I Sleep. The speaker shared her journey of life, the transformation from bliss of student life to the overwhelming life of Mumbai. She gave a demonstration of positivity when she said that she used inner strength to turn the black ball which life threw at her to a white ball. She talked about the challenges that she had to face and how they made her a better person. She got a standing ovation not only because she gave her P1 but also because of the respect and admiration that she drew. Her speech was evaluated by Deepak.

Rajendher revealed the innovative aspects of his personality in his CC #2 speech titled Samosa, Ice Cream and Bicycle. Guess who broke the heart of every girl’s dream man? TM Rajendher, who amongst his numerous interests/hobbies also loves to cook! It was the samosa seller who didn’t give him the 50 p change and not being able to buy an ice cream provoked him to learn about inflation. Asking above age questions, urging his parents to earn a little by selling the extra vegetables, creating opportunity out of a challenge like inflation seems like a Dhirubhai Ambani in making. His speech was evaluated by Anand.

Table Topics Speeches Table Topics Master, Smriti, brought innovation to the table topics round by making members pick an object from her mixed bag and talk on the caption they read. Vishweshwar went a step ahead in revealing the secrets of Ankit Jain’s financial pursuits while speaking on “One Step Ahead”. Sukanta, who is fascinated by magic but relies on self-help, spoke on “Harry Potter”. DTM Lancy gave a piece of his mind on “Eat Healthy, Think Better”. The unsettling Guest Ankit spoke on “Never Settle”. Shriraj, who wouldn’t like to settle for anything less, spoke on “Heart Wants More”. Guest Sonam took a break and spoke on “Have a Break”. Gaurav, who claimed to pick good restaurants instead of working, spoke on “Irresistible Cravings”. Guest Ipshita argued about stains being good as long as they don’t land us in jail. Kannagi spoke on how she was “Bonded Forever” with her soul mate.

Celebration

Manohar, tried his hand at tickling our funny bone with his stand-up comedy act. Presiding Officer, Nisarg, welcomed long standing members of the club Anurag, Kannagi, Raunak and Ankit Jain to share their experiences with TMTC, Mumbai. These members recounted their journeys so far and of not having gone through but grown through the club.

“All is well that ends in a chocolaty cake.” ~ Confections of a cake lover Cake Cutting Ceremony: Perfect ending to the session – Cake cutting at the cafeteria abiding by all the safety norms!

Sergeant-at-Arms, Abhinav, raised the curtains with an exciting game: Chain story. Abhinav, Ankit, Chinmaya, Vimarsh, Deepak, Kannagi and Fiza spoke a few lines on the stage and crafted an interesting story sprinkled with humor. Abhinav started off with, "Every morning, I walk to Bombay to Barcelona Café for a glimpse of her. One day I gathered all the courage in the world, went to her and asked..." Toastmaster of the Day, Chinmaya’s, dream finally saw light of the day! The TCS Mumbai Toasties had gathered at Bombay to Barcelona Library Café and were enjoying every moment of it. The host lead the applause every time making the arena vibrant, only apt for such a special occasion.

Presentations Saikumar requested one and all to rise and raise a toast to Deepak for his decorated victory as District 98 Table Topics Champion – 2017. The speaker opened his speech by elaborating the significance of appreciation and recognition. He was referring to the winner almost as if his name was an open secret. He said that the special toastmaster has incredible humor and extempore speaking skills. The man himself, Deepak, was invited and warmly welcomed on stage. He was felicitated with a token of appreciation. There were joyous cheers of Hip Hip Hurray all around as the toast was raised in the honor of the victor. Deepak generously answered all the questions during the rendezvous. He said that he has got plenty of Facebook requests after Eloquence 2017. One learning that he implemented to increase his chances of winning was to add a message along with humor in his speech. Consistent practice during Club meetings has given him an edge in attempting Table Topics. He has always been a talented Toastie, in that, he was able to complete his Competent Communication manual in 6 months! His Stand-up Comedy shows outside the Club meeting have given him a different perspective and platform to evaluate his skills and grow. He says that it is much more challenging to deliver a successful Stand-up comedy act. On the day of Eloquence, he was absolutely confident and optimistic about his victory as others looked nervous while he was having a jolly good time. Raunak has made the Club proud, as now, the members can boast of a Division Director from amongst them. No wonder, such a charming personality has attracted a sea of friends on Facebook. Event Management and Organization has always been a forte of this former Club Sergeant-at-Arms, President and Area Director. His advice, especially to buddying Toastmasters, is to be consistent in their participation at various levels and keep taking roles. A lot of gratitude and emotions were exchanged with the members in the audience. Guest Gopala was invited on stage to speak a few words on the story behind Bombay to Barcelona Library Café. Eustace Fernandes, the man who created the iconic Amul girl, is also known to be the mentor of Amin Sheikh. Amin has had a troubled childhood. However, he was fortunate enough to get associated with Eustace as his driver. He got the opportunity to travel to Barcelona, Spain. He thought of opening a café that only employed individuals who grew up on streets. His dream became true sooner rather than later. The speaker left the audience awestruck with the life achievements of Amin. Yashwanth gave the session a musical conclusion with very aptly selected Hindi song: Chale Chalo from the Film: Lagaan (2001). Everyone enjoyed his melodious voice while getting infused with renewed enthusiasm.

Table Topics Speeches Table Topics Master, Kannagi, was prepared with a variety of topics for a lot of people. She had something special for everyone. The audience enjoyed a show wherein the speaker was given a picture or a book to talk about. In one of the acts, excellent salesmanship could be marvelled upon as a Spanish book was being sold to a non-Spanish speaker. Topics also covered distant places such as deserts and the fourth dimension i.e. time, esp. in its future and past states. The audience also heard about perspectives towards life while also pondering over the prospects of living on Mars. Cake cutting and snacks were awaited eagerly and relished upon with as much joy. The sandwiches, cakes, coffee, buttermilk etc. were exactly what everyone needed during the interval.

Evaluation

Ankit Jain gave valuable feedback to the speaker Saikumar. The evaluator appreciated the sincerity and content of the speaker. The recommendations included to follow the process of grabbing everyone’s attention by tapping on the glass in the opening, personalizing the toast by using anecdotes and so on. The toast had made the special meeting all the more special. Timer for the day, Abhilash, provided the timing report as and when required which enabled the members to vote for the Best Table Topics Speaker.

I hated every minute of training, but I said, ‘Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion’ ~ Muhammad Ali Tip of the Day: Use humor when things go wrong. If something goes wrong during your speech, tell a quick joke to help put you and your audience at ease. For example, if the lights go out, a good joke might be: “Who forgot to pay the electric bill?”

Presiding Officer, Deepak, concluded the session by announcing dates for upcoming events:  

Best Table Topic Speaker Reshma

Sergeant-at-Arms, Reshma, gave a perfectly fit start to the session giving an insight on importance of financial status. Presiding Officer, Deepak, invited the guests on stage and asked to share their expectations about the session. Toastmaster of the Day, Subramanyam, started with his own experience and transition of phases from Illiteracy to Ignorance and then to Informed. Ups and downs having pains and gains in life made him stronger and better every next time. He shared the importance of Peace, Protection and Prosperity. Along with keeping waist in shape, he advised to keep wallet in shape as well. Everyone has the right to be financially happy and that was the main motto of his presentation.

Prepared Speeches Shikha (Mumbai TM) started her CC #1 speech titled "Life from 14000 Feet" with an aesthetic description of nature and a question to herself - Who am I. She hails from Haryana and is proud to be a daughter of a brave man who was a part of Indian Navy and a woman who is epitome of love and sacrifice. She shared her experiences of college restrictions she faced. She expressed her love for Indian army by making a courageous attempt to go for it. She then landed in the city of dreams – Mumbai – after getting the courage to move on in her life. She told about her current profession as a Sales manager and her struggle in becoming successful in her life. By receiving the "Salesperson of the Year" award, she added another feather in the cap of achievements in her life. Her love for stage made her join Toastmasters so that she can influence others as well with her words. She got a standing ovation as is a custom for CC #1 speech. Her speech was evaluated by Saikumar. Manohar began with his CC #3 speech titled "Don’t Dare to Compare" with a wonderful story setting the theme for him. He told comparison started in our life in school for marks, income in adulthood and many other categories. “Comparison is the thief of joy" was one of the very well quotes used by him. He shared example of TM Fiza and TM Deepak inspires him to be so great in storytelling and humour. But it should not stop him from his own interest from giving motivational speeches. Comparison is something applicable only in front of a mirror. Speaker urged to concentrate on getting better every day and celebrate the little advancements of life. His speech was evaluated by Nayan.

Table Topics Speeches Table Topics Master, Abhilash, came up with topics completely aligned to the theme. Large number of guests participated showing great enthusiasm and interest towards this round.

Evaluation

Saikumar, the General Evaluator for the meeting, observed the meeting carefully and shared the aspects which went well and not so well. He focussed on importance of starting session on time and requested role players especially to strictly follow the same. He thanked the TMOD for spreading great awareness and hoping it will be useful to all. First timer: Abhilash did a wonderful job as a TTM and GE appreciated it. The Speech Evaluators along with the TAG Team – Timer, Ah Counter and Grammarian did justice to their roles and assisted in executing the Evaluation phase of the meeting effectively.

Best Table Topic Speaker Suhasini and Guest Laxmi

Sergeant-at-Arms, Abhilash, skilfully used the context of Bahubali to present the script of SAA. Presiding Officer, Saikumar, invited all the guests who had arrived in the palace to introduce themselves. Toastmaster of the Day, Yashwanth, enthusiastically introduced everyone with the theme. To many, it felt like preaching to the choir when he highlighted the acclamation that this blockbuster has received from all across the world. Such is the fan following of Bahubali series. He described the qualities of each character, which can be imbibed in us. For instance, his most favourite character, Devasena, exemplifies a distinctive personality with a balanced combination of aggression, beauty and intelligence. He rightly said that Bahubali is still in the nearby theatres and forever in our hearts.

Prepared Speeches Prashant (Mumbai TM) shared his personal story in a very vivid manner in his CC #4 speech titled: You don’t Choose Your House. The speaker narrated the dilemmas that he faced while he wanted to sell off his existing accommodation and buy a new one. When he wanted to sell his exiting house, he was approached by firstly a North-East Indian motherdaughter duo and secondly an old man who wanted to buy the house for his daughter out of his pension fund. When the speaker went to buy a house in the Western Suburbs, he had 2 choices for the same amount of money, a bigger house with skewed Vaastu features or a smaller house with proper Vaastu alignment. He, along with his better half, came to the decision of selling the existing flat to the old man and buy the bigger one. He reiterated the old man’s words: You don’t choose a house, the house chooses you. His speech was evaluated by Nisarg. Subramanyam shared a first-hand account, from Saudi Arabia point of view, of the Gulf War which shocked the world, in the late 1980s and early 1990s, in his ACB #2 speech titled: Expect the Unexpected. The speaker narrated his dilemmas, predicaments and struggles in the face of such a global adversity at a critical juncture. Being a newlywed couple, the speaker and his wife were horrified by the uncertainties caused by the geopolitical chaos around them. He mentioned of missiles getting fired and intercepted, many friends leaving, many preparing themselves for survival in such a hostile situation among many of the untold stories. His speech was evaluated by Raunak. Rajeswary elaborated her rendezvous with the mountains and sunrise at a trek in her ACB #5 speech titled: Climbing the Heights. The speaker went to the Prabalgad and Kalavantin trek along with her fellow Club members. She had an amazing time with the happening group lead by experienced trekkers like TM Ankit Jain. She highlighted the early morning adventure of rock climbing and reaching a particular spot to witness the beauty of sunrise. She had her ups and down during rock climbing, pun intended. Finally, she took it upon herself and mustered up the courage to reach the spot at the right time and witness the local star rising from the host planet’s horizon. Her speech was evaluated by Nayan.

Table Topics Speeches Table Topics Master, Anand, had stuck the pictures of various Bahubali characters on the wall. The volunteers were supposed to select any one of them and attempt the topic mentioned behind the picture. The Table Topics round could not have been more aligned with the theme!

Evaluation

Pramod, the General Evaluator for the meeting, aptly said that just like the movie, Club meetings have beginnings and feedbacks (instead of conclusion). He reiterated the importance of punctuality for the role players and advised the Speech Evaluators to support their recommendations with examples for the benefit of the speaker. The GE drew an analogy between the movie and the meeting by describing and relating various characters. It has always been pleasant to listen to his evaluations. The speech evaluators gave constructive feedback such as avoiding lesser relevant content and questions, reinforcing the speech with some more details and so on. Timer, Ah Counter and Grammarian performed their duties diligently and provided their reports for the benefit of role players and audience at large.

“Never throw the first punch. If you have to throw the second, try to make sure they don’t get up for a third.” ~ Brandon Sanderson, Steelheart Tip of the Day: Ditch distracting mannerisms. Sergeant-at-Arms, Abhinav, guided everyone present to the mysterious world of virtual filter bubbles. Presiding Officer, Deepak, cordially invited the guests to burst their bubbles and break the ice by introducing themselves. Toastmaster of the Day, Nisarg, had done an in depth research on the subject of advanced computer techniques used for customizing the virtual world experience on websites such as Google, Facebook and the like. Just as any technology has its pros and cons, this customization is also a double edged sword. The customer does get relevant content due to online filters but has to potentially compromise with privacy and exploring new possibilities.

Prepared Speeches Smriti reminisced about her childhood dream of becoming an astronaut and finding a different aspect to it now, in her CC #3 speech titled: The Fault in our Stars. The speaker shared her childhood passion of becoming an astronaut, with the audience. In her school days, she was inspired by Kalpana Chawla and she would buy books on Solar System and Universe without second thoughts. However, later on she realized that the convolutions of physics do not particularly attract her. Recently, she regained her zeal as she has discovered the domain of Data Analytics in IT. She hopes to work on astronomy related data as a Data Analyst in the near future. She is an inspiration to look up to for her indomitable and adaptable spirit. Her speech was evaluated by Anand. Nayan brought the wild into the concrete jungle and raised awareness about cheetahs and leopards in his ACB #1 speech titled: Time to Change our Spots? The speaker clarified the differences between cheetahs and leopards, for example, one dare not try to domesticate the latter. There have been many reports of leopard attacks, mainly due to deforestation, mistaking crouching humans as preys, and soft targets such as poultry outlets. He emphasized that it is time that we dream of man vs. wild to turn into a win-win situation. Therefore, we must correct our perception towards the wild life and resolve the conflicts amicably. His speech was evaluated by Deepak.

Table Topics Speeches Table Topics Master, Shriraj, was beaming with enthusiasm and thankfully, it was contagious! He came up with relevant topics well aligned with the theme which members and guests enjoyed to speak on. He summarized the speeches in a few words at the end and closed the Table Topics section gracefully.

Evaluation

Ankit Jain, the General Evaluator for the meeting, had something up his sleeves for every role player. He appreciated the efforts put in by the prepared speakers and TMOD. He emphasized on the POETS protocol for Prepared Speaker introduction. Also, being mindful of the handshake protocol is recommended. Presentation Slides should be sequential, coherent, relevant and precise. The TMOD had worked very well to achieve the standards of presentation; however he could make it more precise and purposeful. The speech evaluators appreciated the efforts put in for content research and recommended to use voice modulation to deliver the speech in a more convincing manner. Timer, Ah Counter and Grammarian used their past experiences of playing these roles and made them more effective.

“Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.” ~ Albert Einstein Tip of the Day: Keep your notes in check. If you need to use notes, be subtle and do not read your speech.

Presiding Officer, Deepak, concluded the session by announcing dates for upcoming events:  

Sergeant-at-Arms, Yashwanth, raised the curtains with a beaming smile and contagious enthusiasm. Presiding Officer, Deepak, rightly said that it’s time the Club celebrated in SoBo as it has entered its teenage! He had a popular and interesting game up his sleeves. He hosted a quick round of “First word that comes to mind” game. Master of Ceremonies, Kannagi, couldn’t help but notice that this was the closest Club anniversary celebration, to the actual anniversary date of June 2. The no. 13 has many connotations, good and evil. Similarly, Toastmasters also has a dark side, it tends to make some of our day-to-day activities awkward! The MoC and audience shared a couple of instances such as obsessive handshakes, tendency to over-applaud, counting fillers during client call and the like. Raunak and Fiza pumped gasoline in the McLaren of a meeting and got one and all into a tizzy as they ran helter-skelter to reach out for each other’s signatures! Yeah, you read it right! The idea was to identify the person as per the qualities given in a 5x5 grid. Just like the game of Bingo, you can claim a prize if you’ve got a complete line. For instance, the qualities were: The girl with the ‘Potter’ tattoo in our club, Sheldon Cooper of the Club and so on.

Presentations Nayan, the Roastmaster, gave a memorable farewell to Ankit Jain, the Roastee, in his ACB #3 speech titled: A Roast to Remember. The speaker dauntlessly chose this particular Roastee for the following reasons: plain ol’ deservingness, anyway he’d be gone to Indore by the next day and last but not the least, underestimating the power of keenly attentive and wittiest Grammarian of the Club. The speaker gave a humorous angle to the various incidents in Roastee’s life and his idiosyncrasies. Ankit had unfortunately lost the Tata Administrative Services final interview by a hair’s breadth, he is usually found in a conflict between the desire of getting married and the love of mountains and he does enjoy the royal usage of hashtags. Apart from hashtags, his other obsessions include the sun, trekking, running, Mumbai Airport, bike, playing an animal, himself and headstands! Having said that, it is evident that the Club has enjoyed the company of Mr. Jain and will cherish his camaraderie. Bon Voyage to Ankit Jain, for the journey from Bombay to Indore. Nayan used time generously to ensure a well-cooked recipe. His speech was evaluated by Deepak. Cake Cutting in such occasions is a necessity, isn’t it? Members and Guests enjoyed the ceremonial cake cutting event and enjoyed the chocolate delicacy which was available in abundance.

Nisarg and Yashwanth gave a melodious performance with their guitar and vocal skills respectively. ‘Dehleez Pe Mere Dil Ki’ was a soothing and delightful choice while ‘Saahore Bahubali’ echoed in the conference room and resonated with the recent success of the popular blockbuster.

(Clockwise): Nisarg and Yashwanth wooing with ‘Dehleez Pe Mere Dil Ki’. Nayan delivering ‘A Roast to Remember’. Nisarg, Nayan and Shruti grooving to ‘Ambarsariya’.

Guest Neha D’Souza introduced herself as a successful blogger and someone who likes to write humorous poems. She enchanted one and all with her rhyming skills as she recited ‘What’s that awful smell?’ and ‘Not so curious case of dogs and cars’. Nisarg, Nayan and Shruti presented a wonderful and mellifluous jamming session with their guitar skills, smooth voice and charming voice respectively. Nayan and Shruti took turns to mesmerize the audience with songs such as: ‘Gulabi Aankhen’, ‘Ambarsariya’, ‘Jiya Re’, ‘Suno Na Sangemarmar’ and the like. Nisarg did surprise everyone with an exciting guitar and vocal performance on ‘Badtameez Dil’ at the crescendo of the jam. Anurag, Anshul and Ankit Jain have contributed uniquely to the club and shared their thoughts as veterans. Ankit Jain took this opportunity to give his farewell speech and expressed his heartfelt gratitude towards his mentors and his affection for the Club.

Table Topics Speeches Table Topics Master, Raunak and Fiza, planned this section in 4 segments: For and Against, Brain vs. Heart, Topic from the Audience and ExCom Exclusive. For and Against: It was interesting when the speakers debated with themselves to discuss their fondness of opposite gender, effectiveness of lying and pervasiveness of gossiping. Brain vs. Heart: The duality was evident now and there were 2 speakers on stage debating each other on gym, dowry and marriage approaches. Topic from the Audience: The audience was interested to know what the Table Topic Speakers would do if they had Mr. India’s watch! ExCom Exclusive: Rest of the Executive Committee members had to convince Deepak to act on something. There were various suggestions ranging from choice of locations to hairstyles! Pressurised President dodged the comments hurled at him with his penchant for humor.

Evaluation

Deepak, in the interest of time, chose to give offline feedback to the prepared speaker and duly document the necessary comments in the Advanced Communication Manual. Timer for the day, Saikumar, kept a track of time to facilitate the transition of various segments from diminuendo to crescendo of the special rendezvous. Saikumar, on behalf of the entire Club, humbly expressed gratitude towards Bhageswari, Guest Sreeraman and Guest Dhruv for facilitating the booking of the special venue for the event.

“Celebrate what you’ve accomplished, but raise the bar a little higher each time you succeed.” ~ Mia Hamm Tip of the Day: Gain experience. Experience builds confidence, which is the key to effective communication. Joining a Toastmasters club can provide the experience you need in a safe and encouraging environment.

Presiding Officer, Deepak, concluded the session by announcing dates for upcoming events:  

Sergeant-at-Arms Yashwanth, our own Bahubali, welcomed everyone present to the world of pirates. Presiding Officer, Saikumar, invited the guests to introduce themselves and get ready to sail! Ahoy! That was the confidence with which the no longer shy Toastmaster of the Day, Abhilash, set sail to the ship. He connected with the audience right at the start by asking to help him with the order of the Pirates of Caribbean series which they happily obliged. He established an interesting link between the venue and the theme when he said that ‘Neptune’ was the name that ancient Romans gave to the Greek god of the sea & earthquakes, ‘Poseidon’. Not only did we ‘savvy’ what the TMOD had to say but we also savoured his newfound confidence.

Prepared Speeches ‘Woman of Substance’ Mugdha walked us through her life of being born and brought up in the City of Dreams, Mumbai in her CC #1 speech titled: Life is Full of Fun. She beamed with pride when she spoke about the reputed school that she passed out from and having a building named after her. This sweet and adjusting Maharashtrian girl embraced her husband’s benevolent religion of Jainism with open arms. An engineer, completed her MBA, a nature lover who loved gardening and expert at cake decorations; she sure has an interesting assortment of talents in her kitty. A poem about life being beautiful and we giving our best shot, come what may, asserts her vibrancy. Her speech was evaluated by Nayan. High Performance Leader Ankit Dasgupta gave his HPL speech which he initially suspected was something similar to IPL. His high energy speech began with John Maxwell’s quote ‘A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way and shows the way. He shared his experience and learnings from being the Logistics Head for the Disctrict Conference: Eloquence which was his HPL project. According to him ability to gel well, solve problems, work as a team, delegate and motivate were some of the important traits of a good leader. He also gave examples of how visionaries like M. K. Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King became great leaders despite being ordinary people. He draws inspiration from M. S. Dhoni when it comes to putting the team forward in success and putting yourself ahead in case of failure! His speech is reminiscient of Dr. A. P. J. Kalam. His speech was evaluated by Saikumar.

Table Topics Speeches Table Topics Master, Bhageswari, came up with relevant topics well aligned with the theme which members and guests enjoyed to speak on. Guest Nevathika sold the special pirate eye patch by saying donning it would attract the opposite gender. Interestingly, towards the end she had impressed the same gender as well. Shweta from Thane Toastmasters argued with Saikumar saying Robinhood was her hero since he stole from the rich and gave it to the poor, Saikumar defended the pirates saying we can’t be sure if Robinhood actually gave away what he stole to the poor. Guest Sahana was not interested in being Jack Sparrow for a day rather she reminisced how she idolized Kalpana Chawla. Manohar recalled his discussions with his dad regarding change of job while speaking on ‘All that glitters is…’ Guest Abhijeet said he would love to set off on his ship along with his friends and wouldn’t want to come back. Guest Yash was neither interested in talking about piracy nor privacy, instead spoke his heart out. Guest Pravesh saved nine by using the opportunity to speak on Pirates of Caribbean.

Evaluation

Nayan, the General Evaluator evaluated the meeting in his unique unmatched style. The session at Neptune, the farthest planet of our solar system saw a surprisingly large turnout of guests. GE aptly gave credit to the interesting theme that attracted the pirates just in time when we were getting lonely at sea. He appreciated the efforts put in by the prepared speakers, TMOD and the role-players. He emphasized on having the Toastmasters banner outside the room in order to avoid disturbances during the speeches. Speech Evaluators, Timer, Ah Counter and Grammarian used their past experiences of playing these roles, went the extra mile and made them more effective.

“The greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things. He is the one who gets the people to do the greatest things.” ~ Ronald Reagan Tip of the Day: Enter contests. Entering contests is a challenging and fun way to improve your skills. Toastmasters offers various speech contests throughout the year.

Presiding Officer, Saikumar, concluded the session by announcing dates for upcoming events: 
