CHAIRMANS REPORT Tena Koutou Katoa On behalf of the Ngati Tuwharetoa Genesis Energy Committee, welcome to the Annual report for the period 1 July 2017 to 30 June 2018. This report is an overview of the applications which the committee has supported during this reporting period. This was an exciting year for the committee as it marked implementing the Variation to our Mitigation agreement. That being Genesis Energy representatives coming off the Committee and Ngati Tuwharetoa now making up 100% of the Committee, as well as the mitigation funds being transferred to the Tuwharetoa Maori Trust Board who will hold the funds on behalf of the Committee. On behalf of my Committee and indeed Ngati Tuwharetoa I want to acknowledge Genesis Energy for their leadership and confidence to be open to having a conversation around these changes and then agreeing that the changes occur. In our view, these changes certainly set the bar high for other power companies. Another key change we saw occur this year was the Annual General Meeting of the Ngati Tuwharetoa Mercury Development Group and the Ngati Tuwharetoa - Genesis Energy Committee hold our hui on the same day. From our perspective holding the AGM on the same day was a great initiative as it meant our whanau only needed to attend one hui and given the similarities of the committees it made sense. This was an extremely well attended event and left the Committee feeling excited for the coming year ahead. Your committee members are: Te Reowhakakotahi Wall (Chairman) Heemi Biddle Maria Nepia Te Ngaehe Wanikau Mandie Brown

I would like to thank my fellow committee members and our awesome project manager for their ongoing efforts this year. A total of 94 applications were received with 73 approved. Some of the significant projects which the Ngati Tuwharetoa Genesis Energy Committee supported this year were: • • • • • • • •

We thank all those applicants who have reported back to the committee this year. It is always great to see the progress made and achievements gained through these reports. We urge those who have received funding to ensure a report is submitted. During the reporting period we noticed an increase in applications for Rangatahi program’s, education applications decreased from previous years and it was good to see more quality Environmental Applications coming through. As discussed at our AGM the Committee are trialling a new criteria to allow for Marae support for infrastructure that specifically supports an environmental outcome. The Committee will make an assessment from the applications received and report back at our next Annual General Meeting on the outcomes. A workshop for all Tuwharetoa whanau who wish to submit project applications was held at Otukou Marae on the 23rd of August 2017. The purpose was to go through the application process by outlining important aspects of the form and sharing examples from previous projects which have been approved. Our guest speaker was Moira Loach from Safety Specific Solutions. She presented on the Health and Safety regulations as well as a step by step tutorial on how to complete a Health and Safety Plan. We encourage those who are looking at applying next year to ensure they have all the information required or speak with our project manager for assistance. We look forward to another year of supporting Ngati Tuwharetoa whanau in their initiatives in helping us to achieve our objectives.

OVERVIEW The Ngati Tuwharetoa - Genesis Energy Committee was formed after an agreement was reached between the Tuwharetoa Maori Trust Board (on behalf of nga hapu o Ngati Tuwharetoa) and Genesis Energy in 2000. The purpose of this agreement is to mitigate the impacts of the ongoing operation of the Tongariro Power Scheme (TPS) on Ngati Tuwharetoa, and to establish a forum whereby a meaningful, positive and balanced working relationship is developed. This agreement came about after two years of consultation with hapu that involved discussions around complex and difficult issues. The Committee is now made up of five members, all elected members from Ngati Tuwharetoa. The Committee meets every two months to assess applications and look at the progress of current projects. The Committee convenes a Hui-a-Iwi every November to report back to Ngati Tuwharetoa on projects and finances. The next election year for the Ngati Tuwharetoa representatives will be in 2020.

KEY OBJECTIVES OF THE COMMITTEE ➢ To progress environmental/cultural projects involving waterways and adjacent lands influenced by the Tongariro Power Scheme; ➢ Undertake activities and promote projects to support the kaitiaki role of Ngati Tuwharetoa generally; ➢ Promote projects to facilitate the education, health and well-being of Ngati Tuwharetoa youth; ➢ Involve Ngati Tuwharetoa people in monitoring activities undertaken by Genesis Energy as required by the resource consents granted; ➢ Facilitate the protection of waahi tapu that may be affected by the operation of the Tongariro Power Scheme. ➢ Key to the success of this Committee and the progress of these objectives is the sharing of information between Ngati Tuwharetoa and Genesis Energy. This two-way process allows each party to better understand and work through new and ongoing issues.
