The Waves Between B Y J A M E S M I DW I N T E R

James Midwinter’s work isn’t necessarily about the act of surfing, but the time and space around it. It seeks to suggest rather than dictate. Midwinter attempts to conjure a sense of place and evoke an individual response. The viewer is invited to submit to the scene and step away from the distractions of modern life – observe, breath in and imagine themselves in this space, enveloped by the sounds of the rolling sea or the cool stillness. Midwinter says “I think the aim of my photography is to not only show the world how I see it, but also invite the viewer to hopefully begin experiencing the world differently.. taking time to absorb small moments, the way the sand forms, the way it feels under their feet and the way the air moves around them when they’re at the coast.” Midwinter’s work aims to show us that surfing is a way to intensely be at one with nature and the book is a reflection of this philosophy, a communion with nature, often free from other aspects of human life. Waiting for a wave is a meditation.

New Light New York B Y R O B M C CA RT H Y

Many dream of experiencing life in New York City, with all of it’s excitement and contradictions, it’s towering architecture and small personal moments. In this new book by photographer Rob McCarthy we see the city in a new light – a natural light. “I find inspiration everywhere in the city, from the kids on the street in Brooklyn to the tallest skyscrapers on Wall Street,” says McCarthy. “I set myself the challenge of using only available light several years ago. It lets me produce images that communicate a profoundly real New York. “McCarthy has a gift for juxtoposing larger than life cityscapes and individual narratives, and so this book features meticulously captured images, simultaneously awe inspiring and touching. The cinematic images appear “lit” drawing the viewer into his vision of one of the greatest cities in the world.

SWIMMING POOLS B Y M A R I A S VA RB OVA

We are returning to the world created by Maria Svarbova to deliver a comprehensive collection of her work around this photographer’s biggest concept – Swimming Pools. In the initial set of images, we see models frozen in the composition, the swimmers are as smooth and cold as the pools tiles. The colours softly vibrate in a dream-like atmosphere. However, despite the retro setting, the pictures somehow evoke a futuristic feeling as well, as if they were taken somewhere completely alien. We now observe different strands of thematic content stemming from this original concept. Female empowerment, a more intimate view and relationship between models and the space around them and also Maria’s artistic expression of movements in feminism and the BLM movement.

NEW BOOKS

Occupied BY BRIAN FOUHY

Occupied is a collection of urinals used and photographed by artist Brian Fouhy. Often unnoticed, Fouhy hopes to draw attention to the beautiful, odd, and sometimes funny forms urinals can take. By including information surrounding the use of the urinal, such as the meal eaten in a restaurant, the score of a game at a sporting event, or the miles travelled since his last pee break while driving; Fouhy adds another layer to the experience beyond just a standard visit to the loo. This book is full of fun, whimsy and takes a tongue-and-cheek look behind the closed doors of bathrooms. The second book from Brian, this collection of photography still maintains that distinct observational style of the artist.

MELLOW B Y S OF I E S U N D

«Mellow» is a collection of photography by the Norwegian photographer, Sofie Sund. Through carefully constructed still life images, Sofie captures the essence of what is usually perceived simply as normality. However, with a playful yet delicate touch, this series of images strives to elevate and capture the wonder of those little ‘in-between moments’; the moments that when pieced together make up everyday life. The notion of the ordinary is something which inspires Sofie, as well as the more purely obvious aesthetic details in the world around her. Experimenting with colour combinations and light is a big focus in this artist’s work. Sofie’s style is easily recognisable yet simple in its approach, with a light-heartedness that cuts through the sometimes emotionally oriented imagery. Using different textures and shapes, it is also clear that Sofie is fascinated by the smallest details – and now, with this ongoing photography project, this photographer wants to bring you into her creative universe.

PASTPRESENT BY JUSTINE TJALLINKS

Justine Tjallinks is a rapidly rising photographer, who uses less conventional models to capture scenes that are often other-worldly and full of mystique. With a strong use of tonal palates and colour references, this book showcases her very unique style. Justine combines the ‘old’ and the ‘new’ to create images that have a sense of nostalgia whilst the content and subjects are often firmly fixed in present day sensibilities. Taking inspiration from Dutch master painters for their use of light and colour, this is juxtaposed with remarkable, contemporary faces and figures seen in modern clothing designs. This aesthetic combination means that Justine’s reputation and work is growing quickly. Owing to this photographer’s growing success, her work has been recently been taken on board by the Kahmann Gallery, and they plan to showcase her work in numerous fairs and art installations worldwide over the upcoming years.

reverie B Y L AU R E N T CA S T E L L A N I

Between shadow and light, the grain of the skin, the slightest shiver is exacerbated. Laurent Castellani plays the close-up shot as an expression of its relationship to spacean. The macro-portrait is the art of exploring the beauty close at hand and creating intimacy, the image creation pushing us to whisper. This book, divided into emotional chapters, opens the doors to a singular vision of the portrait and the staging of each of these women whose secret Laurent Castellani has. They have been scrupulously chosen for their singularity, plunging us at the same time into the macro-portrait and cinematographic universe that he is particularly fond of, notably Lynch’s dreamlike universe. Laurent oscillates at the border of reality and imagination in his photos as in his films. Each shot is an emotion. Beauty emerges, natural and wild. Minimalist in the soul and in his approach, Laurent Castellani seeks above all the essential: a vibration.

“Through Objects dedicates most of its content exploring the notion of design as a narrative, and like narratives, objects offer different interpretations to users, according to their own references. By supporting various forms of interpretation, more personal and relevant ways of thinking about these objects arise. To enhance a growing creative involvement, Through Objects has been sharing an inspiring collection of stories and interviews from several designers around the world.” – Rita Trindade, founder of Through Objects. This first volume of Through Objects showcases a selection of 24 design objects ranging from furniture and lighting to textiles and home accessories. Each of the stories reveals captivating items from pioneering designers and creators, such as Nienke Hoogvliet, Kaja Solgaard Dahl, Studio David Pompa and GT2P. ”There are many dualities at play in photography. In my practice, I reflect over the tension between observing and engaging, to be distant and close, to contemplate and communicate – and my camera functions as a tool to explore those borders, and to search for a place in between.” Scandinavian photographer and designer, Daniel Zachrisson, composes images that create a sense of tension with one another whilst encompassing a variety of subject matter. This book features a series of photographs that are unconventionally connected through their disparate themes. With a carefully curated colour palette, this collection takes us from isolated landscapes to charismatic urban scenes. Along the way, there are a series of people who are caught in deeply personal or busier moments, yet, in either setting, there is a feeling of uncertainty around the situations and in what state the characters appear.

Herbarium Vitae is a collection of illustrations by artist, Phoebe Atkey. As part of NHP’s Collective Shorts series, this book sees Atkey produce a series of work in the style of traditional Victorian herbarium or animalium depictions, but re-imagined with a modern twist. The collection takes us through a set of exquisite floral images of Roses and Peonies. Atkey’s style is detailed and precise. However, when set against a minimal book design, this provides an alternative and fun way to showcase Atkey’s fantastic artistic abilities. In this book, alongside the whimsical and beautiful floral illustrations, Atkey also interjects the contents with fuller illustrations of the plants in situ and also scenes that draw on the key theme of this book. Laden with subtle and peaceful colour tones, each image touches on the beauty of Atkey’s floral subjects. “Herbarium Vitae” is part of an exciting new book series that NHP Publishing and Phoebe Atkey are developing together – Herbarium & Animalium. Whatever the season, it is always a good idea to sit back and relax with a cocktail. In our latest Collective Shorts series, graphic designer Nick Barclay has created a stunning anthology of cocktails. This book combines classic recipes with new drink ideas into clear and defined sections. After working on a bar industry magazine and being introduced to the world of cocktails, Nick realised that people love drinking cocktails but not many people know what goes into making them. The design for each cocktail breaks down the ingredients and measures and proportions these out. In this book we see a Nick’s signature style – clean, bold, yet minimal graphical design to showcase the drinks in an alternative and quirky way. The aesthetic for this book is well-designed and the book is the perfect accompaniment for any recipe book collection, art book collection or to have fun with your friends in making some new cocktails.

Lagom is a uniquely Swedish term that doesn’t have an English equivalent (Which I find to be pretty common, the Swedish language has denser words that the English language usually uses two or three words to describe.) Not only does it not translate perfectly but its just a very Swedish idea, or feeling. A popular etymological translation is “around the team” meaning enough food or drink for everyone at the table, this translation is said to go back to Viking times. Lagom is “Just enough,” “Not too much or too little,” “Just right,” “Enough to go around,” “Fair share.” It indicates balance. Lagom doesn’t have the negative connotation of “sufficient” nor does it claim perfection. SHARE LAGOM contains 50 inspired artworks carefully selected amongst the best up-and-coming first time published artists. Following the success of SHARE Vol. 1 & 2 this third installment combines the winning concept of high quality prints on perforated pages with the trendy theme of Lagom. BY AARON TILLEY In our latest Collective Shorts series, photographer Aaron Tilley explores the notion of narratives and storytelling through carefully constructed and captured still images. Executed in a manner that is playful, yet driven with tension, Tilley’s photography exacts an anticipation of the moment that is about to happen. Momentum is a collection of some of Tilley’s best work to date. His photography continuously captivates the viewer, leading us to something perhaps unexpected, out of context or that may cause us some unease but in a fun and highly-dramatic way. The aesthetic is bold and well-designed with each image portraying a story at a paused point in time allowing the narrative of the image to be interpreted by the viewer. With this, the viewer should enjoy the surreal element to the work and embrace this style presented throughout the book.

It is about small fuss, but big flavour food.”

Pathways L OD E S TA R S A N T H O L OG Y

E DI T E D B Y L I Z S C H A F F E R Lodestars Anthology: Pathways contains some of the best and most carefully selected paths and trails that we have traversed. This book explores and details those pathways, the people, the landscapes and the fascinating things we discovered along the way. The journeys we take have a start and an end point, but we, in this book, want to relish the bit in between. So whether this is a mountain pass in the Italian Alps where we meet highland shepherds, or sprawling, urban grids with a bevy of restaurants and contemporary design, we want to inspire the reader to follow these paths and take precious moments to engage in everything possible through their senses. The book is a guide to these pathways, but goes beyond this to capture and document the lives of the people we meet, the challenges of the trip and the culture and landscapes we find that inspire us to keep on adventuring. Lodestars Anthology is an independent magazine-meets-journal for curious travellers who long to be inspired, see the world and meet interesting characters along the road. Focusing on one country per issue, it is a scrapbook of place, getting to the heart of a location and uncovering its quirks, charm and splendour. Sketchbook of a Gentleman LONDON

B Y R O B I N L U CA S This is the first volume from a new series of illustrated books, tracing the life and times of a modern gentleman. Edward is a man about town. He is educated, cultured with an eye for beauty and he has a fascination with history and people. These books are a collection of whimsical illustrations of Edward’s adventures as imagined by the illustrator Robin Lucas. We will start with Edward’s adventures in London. Later in the series we will explore further afield, such as the rolling Tuscan countryside with its mediaeval hill towns, or the delights of India with its rich layers of history and magnificent wildlife. The aim of this project is to produce a series of small sketchbooks that give a real flavor of iconic places around the world through the eyes of Edward – our modern gentleman. The first book written by a new up-and-coming illustrator to the market. Introducing a new character of the modern Englishman to the market, he will appeal to a wide audience and make the perfect gift to a brother, sister, father, mother , son, partner. Feelings of Imperfection A V I S UA L E X P R E S S I O N OF T I M E L E S S N E S S

STYLING BY ANNA BJÖRKMAN AND P H O TO S B Y A N N A M A L M B E RG Through a series of starkly contrasting images, interior stylist Anna Björkman and photographer Anna Malmberg have created a melancholic world that celebrates the feeling certain spaces tend to evoke within us. Feelings of Imperfection examines the duality between two worlds: the old and the new, the perfect and imperfect, the present and the past. By applying subtle decorative touches to abandoned buildings, Björkman inspired a new dialogue surrounding their respective histories, the timelessness of which Malmberg captured with intimate photographs that encourage viewers to read between the lines. Malmberg and Björkman hope to elicit an emotional response that will allow you to connect to these Feelings of Imperfection in a personal manner that will further stimulate a conversation between the past and the present. Every wall has its own history, every window a different view – in this book the artists invite you along on their journey to uncover these well-kept secrets and shine a new light on them.

An collection of contemporary works from, by or inspired by the Norse region. This second edition in the SHARE collection possesses all the same attributes of the original – an extraordinary selection of 50 artist’s works printed in two-page format and meant for ripping out, for framing and for sharing. At New Heroes & Pioneers, we are very excited to present SHARE Scandinavia as the followup to the original. SHARE has been met with enthusiasm around the globe for lovers of art and design so SHARE Scandinavia is the next natural step in order to build on the concept. All too often we have connotations of art books being strictly for consumption at the coffee table. The SHARE concept enthusiastically abolishes this with a book that is meant to be held and deconstructed. Each featured artist presents a single piece of work along with a short description or text. The size is optimised and every page is perforated so that you can use the pages as individual works of art.

Collecting Words ( V E RY ) S H O RT ( V I S UA L ) S TO R I E S

B Y B R I A N F O U H Y – T E M PO R A R I L Y O U T OF S TOC K Brian Fouhy is a visual poet of the modern variety. Working in the medium of Instagram, this American captures words and phrases that are tattooed across the pavement and handwritten on the walls. He then puts them together to create short stories. The result is a visual compilation whose sum is quite different from the individual pieces. Over 30 stories are contained in this edition. In it, you’ll find humour and irony, often found mingling together. What unifies these contrasting images is their humanity, coupled often with a sense of loneliness. Brian’s work demonstrates the similarities between the capturing of a moment through the lens of a camera and through the spilling of ink upon the pavement. Both are feelings stamped in a single moment in time. The images themselves often feature forgotten corners in the urban landscape void of life. Truly a contemporary artist, Brian uses the breadth of modern technology to create a style completely his own. And you, have you ever told a story with pictures? Is there a photo-poet that stirs inside of you?

Who is Anna Andersson PO RT R A I T S OF S W E D E N ’ S M O S T POPU L A R N A M E

B Y M E R E DI T H A N D R E W S Thousands of Swedish women share the country’s most popular name – Anna Andersson. Besides their name and nationality, do they have anything else in common? In 2014, photographer Meredith Andrews travelled the length of Sweden to find out. From a tattoo artist to a priest, a child to a 99-year old, Meredith found astonishing diversity within this statistically significant group of women who all answer to the same name. Who is Anna Andersson? is a visual account of 50 women who, at least superficially, share the same identity. This collection of intimate portraits reveals what unites and distinguishes people with a common name. The photographs combine personal stories with a captivating glimpse of life in contemporary Sweden and offer a new perspective on a national character. Whether you’re interested in foreign cultures, naming conventions or simply love peering into the lives of complete strangers, this book will fascinate you, no matter how many times you flip through the pages.

5 HIDE IN PL AIN SIGHT You’re bound to be noticed as soon as you arrive in a new place. But the longer you stay in the same location, the less attention you’ll attract. You become a part of the scene; part of the environment. Everyone will be less aware of you and the fact that you are taking pictures.

A month-long trip around Sri Lanka was coming to an end. I stayed at the gigantic colonial Galle Face Hotel in Colombo. A very narrow strip of beach, no more than ten feet wide, stretched for miles alongside the stone wall. During the day it was empty, but when the sun was about to set, thousands of Sri Lankans gathered to play Don’t rush away from a good photo spot. Hang in the waves. I was amazed by the light and the around for a while until you become a fly on the scene and came back evening after evening. wall and it will be easier to capture the scenes I walked around among the families, couples and in front of you. You and the people around you laughing children until the sun was nowhere to will feel increasingly comfortable with each other. be seen.

8 BACKGROUND CHECK There are generally three main layers in every photograph: the foreground, the subject and the background. The latter could make your picture pop or flop. Before you press the shutter, take a moment to think about what the background look like. The camera transforms three-dimensional reality into a two-dimensional picture and if the background is not thought through, it can ruin a great shot. Pay attention to what’s behind your subject.

HIDE IN PLAIN SIGHT

I saw it from far away. The old, two-colored American car and the wall behind with the exact same colors, only inverted. It was so perfect I almost thought the driver had been aware of it and parked his car right there, just waiting for an attentive photographer to walk by. Sometimes the world’s colors come together in amazing ways. Pay attention to color schemes and you’ll be able to get great pictures.

In early 2013, New Heroes & Pioneers publishing house – based in Malmö, Sweden – was little more than the kernel of an idea in our minds. Our plan was to develop and publish a range of coffee table books containing a smart, interesting and eclectic mixture of art, culture and fashion. What made this concept unique was that we were, right from the beginning, dedicated to being a vehicle for discovering and promoting new and unknown artists whose singular styles and perspectives make them stand out. The concepts of ‘making human connections’ and ‘giving back’ were woven into the fabric of the corporate culture and have become a clear and conscious part of every project since the company’s inception.
