In which case head for any one of South Africa’s shopping centres where you will be guaranteed world-class shopping, entertainment, the latest movies across all genres, and a delicious array of food in conveniently situated and safe surroundings. Its comprehensive offering of unique and traditional shopping elements attracts both locals and tourists. According to Anil Ramcharan, Fourways Mall’s Operations Manager, the redevelopment of Fourways Mall will allow not only for increased shopping space, but for more office facilities too, as well as extended parking which is planned for further down the line. Research findings show that visitor and shopper numbers are expected to increase by 20% to 30% – a telling indication of Fourways Mall’s reputation and appeal. “We are determined to keep ahead of the coming trends, and with a completely new look and new shop fronts – in effect a brand

as The Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site, and Sterkfontein Caves. Despite the recent economic backdrop, Fourways Mall’s continuing popularity and success may surprise some. South African retailers in general however, have emerged relatively unscathed from the recession that seems to have now bottomed out, and much of the increase in sales and profit came as a result of retailers’ continued expansions. Leading names stuck to investment plans for new stores and locations. Truworths’ 12% increase in sales was in part a result of opening 38 new stores in the 12 months to December 2009. Woolworths was in a similar position. On a same-store basis (looking at stores open 12 months or longer), turnover grew 4.4% in the six months to December. New stores during the period lifted the total increase in turnover for the period to 9.3%. Another surprise was the fairly aggressive store roll-outs, uncharacteristic of previous downturns. The roll-out of new space –

stronger among the clothing retailers than the food sellers – seems to have happened at a faster rate than two to three years ago when market conditions were stronger. “Competition with other major Joburg shopping complexes is extremely sharp,” says Ramcharan. “So our continued aim is to attract customers to Fourways Mall and, with what we have to offer, retain them.
