It begins with a screening of an internationally acclaimed new film by American Director Paul Thomas Anderson called The Master which will be screened in the historical Turbine Hall. The hall was built in the 1940s for manufacturing turbines for boats has been refurbished into a state of the art cinema. You’re invited to the city’s biggest and best loved street party. The Valley Fiesta is back for another year, with a weekend long celebration of all things musical. Electronic musicians as well as live bands will have equal billing to strut their stuff.

One of the few proper “donation” festivals in Oz, this year’s Surry Hills Festival is bursting at the seams with live music, art and markets to keep you entertained. Catch local darling Alison Wonderland on the decks and heaps more Hill’s action.

Festivals: excellent for groping strangers

Festival fever Australia loves festivals. Indeed, the next few months are so crammed with them it’s hard to keep track. Here are the essentials WORDS ALEX HARMON

What do deadly snakes and festivals have in common? Australia has the more of them per capita than anywhere in the world. That’s Australia for you, life on the edge, full of thrills and spills and hey, what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger, right? The most common complaint I hear is that there are too many festivals and it’s too hard to decide on which one to attend, while over in the UK the most common complaint is in regards to all the mud. This just proves that people are whingers, no matter where they are. Complaints aside, the best thing about Aussie festivals is the atmosphere. Sure, we don’t always get the big names or Kate Moss rolling around in the mud wearing short shorts, but we do have the vibe. The sun is shining (well, usually), the clothing is sparse (always) and people are generally having a sweet time, all for the love of the music. 6

So whether you like to dance, mosh, skank, sway, shuffle or all of the above, there will be something for you. And it doesn’t matter where you are, the festivals move around so as long as you can get to a capital city or sometimes even a country field, then you won’t miss out. Hell, even Tasmania gets one of the coolest festivals in the country at New Year’s. Another great thing about festivals in Australia is the people watching. There’s the protein-shake, Aussie-flag loving blokes you get at the likes of Big Day Out and Soundwave, or the peaced out, bespectacled hipster girls at the likes of Harvest and Laneway. Then you’ve got your hardcore, diehard festival fan who lives for the music, forgoing showers and getting on the green for the camp-out weekender festivals like the Blues and Roots or Peats Ridge. Or the show-offs who don’t really care about the music

but want to be seen. They’re usually pepped up to the max, wearing their swimming costume (girls) or have their shirts off (guys) and want to be your best friend. Try to avoid them. I could go on and on about festival stereotypes, but I won’t, because it’s not just about them. Making their way over to these shores for the festival season this year are artists like The Chemical Brothers, Blondie, Alt-J, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Blink 182. It’s an action-packed time though and many festivals sell out before you can say “can I jump the fence?” (indeed, many have already sold out, but check eBay and Gumtree for last minute sell-ons, also Facebook is a great way to buy tickets, just go to the festival page and check out the forums). So, to help stop your head exploding trying to work out where, when and how much, here’s the low ›› down...

“A moustache is not beard”

What do you think of hipster beards? They’re fine, any beard is fine with me. What I don’t like is people growing a beard because it might be cool to do that. I don’t think that’s a good reason. I think you should grow a beard because you’re supposed to grow a beard, not because it’s currently in fashion. What do you think of Movember? I don’t like moustaches one bit. It really irks me when someone wears a moustache. I like beards. So you’re not into designer stubble? I don’t mind a styled beard, but just make sure it’s a beard. A moustache is not a beard. I don’t like things that aren’t beards.

Excited about your national tour? Yes, very excited. Every time we tour it becomes more and more likely that people will grow more beards, and that is what drives us. Is there a place in Oz with great beards? Australia is looking strong at the moment, it’s a constantly increasing rate for beards, which is great, but we find that Canberra is surprisingly filled with beards. Almost to the point that we feel we don’t need to play there anymore. But you don’t see many in politics? No you don’t, and I think that will be one of the last things to change. There are a lot of preconceptions that exist with beards. Basically a politician growing a beard is gambling with their whole career. That shouldn’t be the way it is, but unfortunately being a public figure with a beard is tough. But the tides are changing. Brad Pitt has a beard, for example. And I think that is a good benchmark. Why are bearded men better? Well they’re better because they have beards. I am not sure what the reason behind it is. But I have certainly noticed that bearded men are better looking, they are faster at running, they

have neater handwriting and they are better at writing songs about beards.

Does your dad have a beard, or do you have two mums? My dad has had a beard for his entire adult life. And so has his father and his father before him. I come from a long line of bearded men.

Would you get rid of the beard for a chick? There is nothing that would make me get rid of my beard. Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top was once offered $1m to shave off his beard and he refused. Me personally? I would rather die than remove my beard. I would rather be brutally murdered than remove even part of my beard.

What about chicks with beards? I like them. They’re not common enough. I appreciate seeing them, and often at gigs females will have a fake beard or they will have a drawn on beard and I often find that to be quite an improvement. I don’t like looking at a beardless face. It makes me angry and sick.

Ever been discriminated because of it? Oh all the time. I have faced much bearded hardship. I’ve been refused jobs, I’ve had girls tell me they’re not interested, I’ve had people cross the street because they think that just because I have a beard I must be a criminal or a rapist. The list of prejudices is a long list.

Best beard you’ve ever seen? I’ve seen some pretty good beards in my time. Probably the best beard I’ve ever seen belongs to a guy called Jack Passion. For four years he was the winner of the Beard and Moustache Championships. To be able to see and touch the best beard in the world, I felt some kind of magical power. It was a thick, luscious red beard that went down to his navel.

Has it changed at all? Yes, it’s definitely getting easier. Slowly but surely it is being elevated. I can certainly see a difference since when we started mid-90s. A man struggling to come to terms with life after serving in the navy meets a charismatic man and ends up joining a cult. This is the latest offering from director Paul Thomas Anderson (whose filmography includes the wonderful There Will Be Blood) well known for making films that are more works of art then pure entertainment. I, for one, am looking forward to it. HR

This is one of the most gripping, heart-wrenching, engrossing, funny buddy cop movies ever made and I absolutely implore you not to see it! I know that sounds like a massive contradiction but trust me, End of Watch will turn your stomach and break your heart in equal measure. It is a truly depressing and sad film. The beginning of the film quickly sets up the archetypal, cliched characters familiar to anyone who has seen a buddy cop movie; the two best friends who are a bit cavalier in their attitudes towards policing, the hard-as-nails sergeant constantly yelling at them, the nervous rookie and the grumpy older guy. Know that they’re all there, then forget about them because this movie is all about the two main characters – Brian Taylor (Gylenhaal) and Mike Zavala (Pena). The banter between these two as they cruise the streets of south central Los Angeles is brilliant, and when “shit gets real” (to borrow from Bad Boys) the two characters bring a real sense of camaraderie and love to some really trying, violent and horrible situations. The bond between these two characters, both as partners and best friends, is the beating heart of the film and sets it apart from all the others in the cop movie genre. Gylenhaal and Pena deliver outstanding performances. They seem like genuine, down to earth people whose job forces them into some shocking situations. And this is what ultimately makes the film so unbearably sad. GOOD FOR: People who always wished Bad Boys was written by a guy with depression

Giving it all up The trench coat wearing 80s pop sensation, Rick Astley, talks fame, flying, and how annoying it must be to be Rickrolled WORDS ALEX HARMON

You could say Rick Astley is the anti-pop star. He's scared of flying, he's been married for over 20 years (to the same woman), and most striking of all, he quit music at the peak of his career. After selling over 40 million albums by the age of 27, he retired, deciding that his family was more important and spent the next couple of decades largely out of the spotlight. Now, almost 20 years since he vowed he'd 'never give us up', Astley is back with a new album and tour. But whatever you do, don’t call it a comeback. “I wouldn’t say it’s a comeback because I am never going to go back to what it was before,” says Astley. “Part of me – my ego – says wouldn’t it be great to comeback and be in the charts again, but the reality of that is, no I wouldn’t.” The Eighties pop icon, winner of MTV’s ‘Best Ever Act’ in 2008 and accidental star of a viral internet meme, remains relatively humbled by his success, preferring to dodge the limelight, even when it's directed straight at him. “I did a gig at the Rewind Festival last weekend just outside of London with 30,000 people,” he explains, “everyone was singing along to my songs and then when I’m driving home and calling in for fuel and a sandwich, not one person bats an eyelid. That is pretty amazing to be able to do that. I count myself really lucky.” It’s hard to believe the baby-faced singer, so recognisable for his concrete ginger bouffant and swaying grey trenchcoat could go unnoticed. “Okay, If I have my glasses off, with my hair in a bit of a quiff then, yes. But if my hairs in a bit of a mess and I’ve got glasses on then nine times out of 10 I wont get recognised. Which is pretty perfect.” Astley is genuinely proud to admit that he does not regret what others in 1993 called 'career suicide'. “I’ve gotta be honest, I used to look in the mirror and say 'who the hell are you? I don’t know you anymore. I don’t particularly like you anymore.' And at that point you have to start changing things in your life, as amazing as it was. I’m a Dad, I want to enjoy that and I don’t want to be a nutter in a few years time. That’s why I left it all behind,” admits Astley. It may have been his family that motivated him, but he was also disillusioned with the industry ("the music business

is all about business") as well as the travel. The flying, which some would call a perk, became a burden, and eventually for Astley, it became a fear. “I have been to therapy about my fear of flying and one of the things I have come down to is that nobody wants to get on a plane to do something that they don’t actually want to do. Your subconscious is going to say ‘stop this, I don’t want to do this, how can I stop this? Okay I don’t want to get on that plane, I don’t like flying,’” he reveals. “Maybe that’s too simplistic, but I think there’s something in that. I still fly, but I don’t like doing it. I’m okay with it now. But back in the day I was getting on planes to go back somewhere that I was last week to go and mime on TV. I wasn’t even singing live or performing with a band. My brother Mike could have gone somewhere and done them for me. It seemed ridiculous.” Astley will make the journey to Australia in November to play a string of east coast shows and admits the long haul flights are easier “because I can take a couple of tablets and go to sleep.” It will be Astley’s first Australian gig in over 23 years. So what exactly has he been doing? "Well, I’ve never really stopped making music. I’ve been touring – that’s how I pay my gas bill. I’ve actually just written a new album and I’m doing it as a labour of love. I will do a little tour just before we go to Australia and I’ll be doing small venues where I’ll be performing my new songs. Venues where I’ll be able to look out into the audience and see my sister, which is the total opposite to what I did at the Rewind Festival. I am really enjoying that side of it and I like to mix it up a bit. I play drums in a little punk rock band. I’m

still just a 15 year old kid making music in a garage. Astley may feel like a teenager, but he's an over achieving one – he is the only male solo artist to have his first eight singles reach the Top 10 in the UK. Not only that but his classic Never Gonna Give You Up was a #1 hit single in 25 countries and the eighth highest selling song of 1988 in Oz. “There’s a certain magic to be able to perform a song like Never Gonna Give You Up that only I am able to do. I didn’t value it when it was a big hit and I was Captain Cheese. I didn’t really see it for what it was.” Indeed, Captain Cheese was prepared to serenade me on the phone, but a last minute change with the PR company meant that I was calling him earlier than planned. Astley was expecting a call from a girl called Sharon. “I thought I’ve gotta go and listen to My Sharona, I haven’t heard that song for ages. I’ve got it on YouTube right now and then you called me and said your name was Alex.” Speaking of cheesy tunes, Astley prefers to think of them as legacies to be carried with pride. “Here’s a classic example: I am listing to My Sharona and I’m looking at that guy who is older than me who has a rocking tune. That guy has something that no one in the world has, because he wrote the song, he sang it, and it’s one of those songs that everyone remembers. For the same reason I value that song [Never Gonna Give You Up] like I do photos of my family.” Perhaps part of the reason the song still lives on today lies in the Rickrolling phenomena of 2008. We've all heard of the viral internet meme, perhaps even been victim of it, but not

even Astley could have foreseen how big it was. “Well, obviously it was quite a big thing on the internet at the time, but for me personally it didn’t really exist. Because unless you are Rickrolled yourself then it’s nothing. I didn’t ignore it, but I just kind if left it alone. That’s the beauty of the internet, it’s owned by everybody. I’m sure it bored some people to death, especially the people who just wanted to click on their link but got Never Gonna Give you Up." As someone who carved out a career years before the YouTube-age, Astley takes a philosophical stance on the impact of the internet on music. “That’s the thing about the net, it has a freedom to it. Like I can punch in My Sharona and get that song in 25 different versions. Some kid in his bedroom covering it, then the original guy singing it. It’s given music a new lease on life. The music industry are probably shitting themselves. But for the rest of us, it’s great. We have access to music like never before." And Astley, ever the accidental star, just accepts that he is part of this greater being. “The Rickrolling thing is part of that, it’s something that people did and it could have been anyone, I just happened to be the Rick. It could have been Dave-rolled," he surmises. "That's if somebody found a video that was even cheesier than mine.” ❚

HOT TIPS: Wide angles In sports photography, for example, the common perception is to zoom in to get as much action as possible into one tight frame. In some cases though, if the action you’re trying to film is moving too quickly, this becomes impossible: chances are you’re probably too close to your subject or you don’t have the right kind of equipment. When using a wide-angle lens, the trick is to be creative so that your subject doesn’t become a tiny dot in the frame. Finally get the accessory that every single photographer loves to hate; a tripod. They might be fiddly and annoying but it’ll help keep things steady.

The bay area also features one of the only underwater dive trails in the region. With good visibility the trail marked by a series of chains, is approximately 700m in length and reaches to a depth of some 14m. Spotted goatfish, garfish and baby sharks are just a few of the species that you can swim with in this protected aquatic reserve.

English traveller PRIYAL DADHANIA looked forward to the picturesque Franz Josef glaciers. But all it took was one person in the group with a dodgy stomach to ruin the serenity. When you think of New Zealand it’s difficult to refrain from imagining mountains and lakes. These postcard worthy features are not be missed, especially not the glaciers with their crevasses and ice caves ready for us to explore. Franz Josef, on the west coast of New Zealand’s south island is continuously inundated with tourists in their 20-somethings as the Kiwi Bus pulls in for two nights at a time. The majority of people will partake in some sort of glacier related activity – whether it’s a hike or an ice climb. In my case it was an eight hour hike storming through the ice and snow. Waking up hangover-free, everyone on the Kiwi Experience was brimming with excitement. Unlike the usual hushed voices trying not to alarm anyone’s banging head the head cradling was thrown aside as there was no need to work out the antics of the night before. Instead, like mature adults we were in bed by 11pm and ready for this early morning start (well, most of us were – there’s always one!)

Bursting with energy we walked down in groups to check-in for the mission which lay ahead. The next step: the outfit. Shorts or swimming trunks were advised, and layering up was a smart move seeing as it was set to be freezing the further up we went. As we put on our gloves and hats, and packed our lunches in an orderly fashion it bought us back to the days of school trips. This was the last toilet stop for a large part of the day – where are you going to find toilets on a glacier? Marching around with our hiking boots we jumped on the bus and began the hike through the rainforest and on toward the glacier. Fast, medium, slow – we all split off into ability groups. The boys, wanting to show their manly abilities, bundled into the fast group. Similarly, the Essex girl – dressed with her fake lashes and full face of make-up (to attract who exactly?) bundled into the slow group. We began to make pace getting into the swing of things and stamping into the ice with the clawed hiking boots, better known as crampons, curiosity got the better of me. “Has anyone ever needed to pee on the ice?” I asked, slightly intrigued. While this wasn’t too bad for boys,

girls can you imagine having to get your tush out in the freezing cold while balancing in the squat position, it doesn’t sounds like fun does it? I was told that the number one rule of the hike was no pollution. If you have a chocolate, you take the wrapper with you. If you want a mandarin, you carry the peel around till you’re back on firm ground. Similarly, if you need to poo, you do it in a plastic bag and carry the stinking bag around with you the whole day. It’s definitely not an activity for a dodgy stomach – well, you’d think. This once in a lifetime opportunity got the better of someone in the group. Can you see where this is going? With a dodgy stomach due to some interesting Chinese the night before, a girl in our group couldn’t quite make it through the day without a toilet stop. And another. And another. Most people would have called it off, asked for a refund and curled up in the foetal position for the day. On a glacier you’ve got no privacy. Needless to say after the first couple of hours she decided, thankfully for the group, it was time for her to turn around and head home. Luckily I had a bit more control over my bladder. The only thing I had to complain of was a couple of aching muscles and a few stiff joints, which were well worth the views. Besides, it was easily cured later that night by relaxing in the hot pools, followed by a couple of drinks at the bar, of course.

Miners in Coober Pedy have become so proficient at making homemade bombs that a sign at the old cinema said, “Explosives are not to be brought into this theatre”. What a shame, everyone enjoys some light interaction during a movie. One especially opinionated letter to the editor at Coober Pedy’s oh-so-originally named Coober Pedy News even resulted in the blowing up of the paper’s office.

Who let the dogs out?

Our last stop in Coober Pedy, and perhaps the most breathtaking, was the Breakaways. This vast reserve gets its name from the various plateaus and massive rocks, which from a distance look as though they have broken off the main land. Actually formed from the evaporation of an inland, ancient Australian sea, the plateaus would have served as islands over 70 million years ago. After the continental shift, however, the climate is said to have changed, evaporating the sea and revealing these majestic formations for millennia of our viewing pleasure. After several minutes attempting to absorb this huge emptiness before me, I climb back onto the bus, marvelling at just how small I really am as we make our way back to town. It is a strange old place, Coober Pedy. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, out pops an expanse resembling the likes of Mars or a record-breaking fence. The next morning, we head towards Adelaide with Coober Pedy at our backs and the sunrise on our left and I quietly decide that Coober Pedy surely holds another record: single strangest town on the planet. ❚

Next stop was the Big Winch, where my hangover all but left me for dead at the face-meltingly hot lookout point. One of the town’s many trademark structures, the Big Bucket very nicely sums up the town’s spirit with an optimistic “if” painted on its side. Also here is Coober Pedy’s first, and quite possibly only “tree”, made from the remains of a burnt-out truck. Points for creativity, right? Just a few kilometres away from the town centre, we are back in the desert, watching in awe at a rainstorm far across the flat plain. It is still incomprehensible to me just how many miles of this harsh landscape spans Australia, virtually untouched by human progress. We came to a stop next to a rather unremarkable fence. I soon learned, however, as the old saying goes, not to judge this book by its cover. In front of me was the famed Dog Fence, erected as a barrier in the 1880s to keep sheep-killing dingoes out of south-east Australia. The 1.8 metre-high wire mesh Dog Fence is the longest fence in the world, stretching 5,500km from the Nullarbor cliffs on the Great Australian Bight, across South Australia, 28

Learning the tango From cobbled lanes in the eclectic barrios to ranch life with the gauchos, Buenos Aires will keep you on your toes WORDS XAV JUDD

What unites a famous female icon, a footballer almost as insane as the late ‘mad dog’ Gaddafi and an innovative magical realist writer? No, Evita Perón, Maradonna and Luis Borges respectively were not all covered in maple syrup and chocolate bits at one of my striped pyjama parties; rather, they all help to define Buenos Aires, as it is where these three greats were born or spent an important part of their existence. And, who would not want to while away the hours in the Argentinian capital, with its alluring Europeaninfluenced architecture, unbelievably lush climate and swanky, eclectic night scene. Originally founded in 1536 and situated on the southeastern coast of the South American continent, once I arrive in Buenos Aires, I really am the bull entranced by the matador. And it’s easy to see why, as this appealing metropolis is split into 48 barrios (neighbourhoods) that each have a distinct charm and feel. Whether it’s the district that is the geographical heart of the city, microcentro, which has a plethora of historic buildings and museums; the southeastern located old port region La Boca, with swathes of houses so bright and vibrant that you could believe it might have been the setting for the colour section of The Wizard of Oz; or Palermo, full of parks and exquisite gardens like Jardín Japonés, where it’s easy to find some of the this town’s three million porteños (locals) or sightseers strolling around tucking into delicious fried meat pastries called empanadas.

not stop there, as this extravaganza spills out into a more general bazaar along this neighbourhood’s main drag, the pedestrianized calle Defensa, and various other lanes. Here, I search for a bargain amongst mounds of clothes, knickknacks and souvenirs like flattened champagne bottles, as clowns with painted faces, old crooners with guitars and other artists and performers create an atmosphere to die-for. In the early evening, Plaza Dorrego even hosts a milonga (a weekly dance get-together) where whoever fancies can try their hand at tango until the sky fills up with stars. Snapping up a bargain When you observe something from the bottom upwards, even the most rotund pair of butt cheeks can often look rather different. So, being fed up of normal city excursions that present the usual postcard-pretty, sanitised landmarks – think Paris’s Eiffel Tower or the pyramids in Giza – I opt for an Urban Photo tour (foto-ruta.com). Run by two talented snappers, Becky and Jess, my outing offers up a more interesting angle of Buenos Aires by taking in the truly eclectic barrio, Villa Crespo. Although ostensibly a well-to-do

How bazaar I wonder if someone is a kleptomaniac whether they have control over what they steal or they just have to take whatever they can grab. Well, whatever any light-fingered fiend or even regular shoppers want to get hold of, they’d be spoilt for choice in San Telmo on a Sunday. Why? That’s when the quaint, cobblestoned roads of this bohemian barrio spring alive because of one of South America’s most happening street markets. It is centred on the 300-plus stalls that make up the antiques fair (Feria de Antigüedades) in Plaza Dorrego, where hordes of tourists and locals purr over everything from rusty pocket watches to timeworn clogs, to vintage gramophones and fine china. But the action does

area with trendy outlet stores and designer bars and cafes, derelict industrial buildings, twisted car hulks and boozeaddled vagrants highlight a gritty (but safe) underbelly. But, before I begin my escapades, the two girls go through a quick introductory session about taking images so that we can improve. Furnished with this information about how to get the best out of form, silhouette and texture etc, we set out in groups of three or four to comb the neighbourhood

and bring back the most engrossing shots. With the twist being, that these have to relate to ten oblique clues we are given, such as ‘driving me to distraction’ or ‘I’m a creep, I’m a winner’. Lots of my friends say that most of the pictures I usually turn out seem like they’ve been done by Stevie Wonder, but with my newly enhanced skills this is already not the case. The whole thing ends when we return back to base camp (a café-cum-antique shop, in this case) and view what we’ve produced on a large projector, over a glass of wine. The next day I visit a building constructed in the 1730s that served as a poor house before it had several stints as a

prison. Now a fascinating museum (Penitenciario), shanks – makeshift weapons utilizing razor blades and toothbrushes– in one display cabinet indicate a stay when it was a penal institution would have been about as much fun as a vegan being forced-fed a McDonald’s quarter pounder. This austere climate is further highlighted by the former convict’s stark accommodation: single cells no more than two metres across containing small metal framed beds, a thin dog-eared blanket and a simple wash basin and toilet. Yet, the men and women detained here undoubtedly deserved such miserable punishment. Indeed, one exhibit illustrates the lengths some of these reprobates would go to get hold of drugs, smuggling them in in a tennis ball. Yes, instead of smashing the small yellow spheres around the court, these buggers got whacked on its contents. Surely something that would prompt a legend of the aforementioned sport, John McEnroe, to utter his most memorable phrase, “You cannot be serious!” A grave imposition My other half often says that there’s more than a touch of the living dead about me when I wake up in the morning. But surely, that’s no excuse to be sniffing around others who have passed away in the early nineteenth-century built La Recoleta Cemetery. So, why am I here? To glimpse the tomb of this country’s most famous woman, Evita Perón. And what made her such an icon? Well, it definitely wasn’t because she had huge bazookas a la Dolly Parton or a fly wig like Tina Turner; no, she was the First Lady of the nation between

1946 and 1952 due to her marriage to the President, Juan Domingo Perón. During this time, this beauty endeared herself throughout the land by supporting the poorest citizens – though perhaps it is odd that a penchant for wearing extravagant Christian Dior outfits, Cartier jewellery and other similar bling was not seen as an oxymoron. Nevertheless, such popularity led to a grave in the aforementioned 5.5 hectare burial ground, alongside other notable Argentinians like various former heads of state. And at the time of day I am here, this place really is a site to behold: sitting aside wide tree-lined main walkways huge mausoleums are smattered with angelic marble statues, elaborate bronze crypt markers and noble crosses that seem to vie for attention under a light blue sky laced with strings of cloud. Horses for courses In Shakespeare’s riveting play Richard III the eponymous brute opines “A horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse”. Well, after many years of trying, I finally have one, well for half an hour at least. I am ninety kilometres outside of the town centre at the splendid 1,200 hectare ranch, Estancia Santa Susana. Red bricked and with white colonnades, this rustic colonialstyled Spanish mansion dates back to the 1850s. Now a museum, as with the nearby dining room (comedor), grill, gift shop and stables which are also in the same holding, it is immersed in a sea of green long grasses that are dotted with phone booth- thick palm trees. Back to my four-legged friend – it is also possible to get these lovely beasts to pull you about in a wagon – and the free ride; accompanied by a local guide, a gang of us head out into yonder across vast tracts of earth. Of course, during this thirty minute jaunt, I am über-kind to my horse, as I don’t want to be thrown into a puddle or, worse still, a pile of crap I pass by that is so huge it looks like it could only of come out of Godzilla. Later, I watch as real South American cowboys (gauchos) take over. They entertain everybody by demonstrating various skills in a traditional sport called carreras de sortijas (ring races). The art of this activity is to gallop on a steed and catch a wedding-sized ring that is suspended from a crossbeam. And all of the successes are granted with ‘viva, viva’. During my stay here, another treat is an authentic asado-barbecue (beef, chicken, salads, desert and coffee). And, of course, there’s a dance, tango and music show. In fact, you’ve guessed it, coming to Buenos Aires and not seeing a tango performance or actually taking some classes would be about as crazy as attempting to keep a great white shark’s jaws shut with a paper clip. Locals here really take this amazing type of dance to their hearts, because it originated in the area of the Rio de la Plata (which is between Argentina and Uruguay) in the mid-19th-century. There are various places to catch a glimpse of professional performers, such as the venue I choose, because it’s named after one of this crazes greatest exponents, (Esquina) Carlos Gardel. And, as I depart from this awesome metropolis, in a surreal way I almost feel like it’s actually been my tango partner: it/she embraced and then seduced me, I was left in a spin by its/her mesmerising beauty, and then swept completely off my feet. ❚

Australians are budget-conscious travellers who worry whether they are getting the best deal. Nearly half the 1,800 people quizzed by hotwire.com said they fret about not having enough spending cash when away. Men are more worried than women about missing out on the best deals by booking late. And 43 per cent of respondents are concerned they’re not getting what was paid for. In another survey by Skyscanner, one in five international travellers miss their flight, and traffic jams are the most likely excuse.

Drivers on an English country lane may have been forgiven for thinking they were Down Under when a wallaby was seeing crossing the road. The animal, native to Australia, hopped in front of a taxi on the A603 at Barton in rural Cambridgeshire. “This is the weirdest thing I have seen. I said to the girls I was sure we did not live in Australia. We spent 40 minutes searching for the animal,” driver Tomas Tarjan, 32, told Cambridge News. “As I had my hazards on, several taxis stopped. When I explained they just asked me if I was all right. The girls in the back called the police – they

did not believe us.” Passenger Jessica Wiltshire, 20, has caught the moment on her camera phone. When police saw the picture, they hunted the wallaby down and released it back into the wild. “I quickly got my phone out and took a picture of it because I thought no one was going to believe me,” she said. The wallaby is believed to be a descendant of a troupe that escaped from Whipsnade Zoo in Bedfordshire 60 years ago.

Cops in New Zealand receive hundreds of calls each day – some are more bizarre than others. Last week, an elderly lady called, requesting help to move her chest of drawers. Police central communications shift commander Marty Parker said: “The chest had fallen on to the bed and she had a son who could help but he was busy. “The informant said the chest had fallen over and clothes had come out and she didn’t want anyone to see the mess.” He’s also fielded calls from people looking for the closest petrol station.

ROBOTS TO WATCH HOTEL GUESTS SLEEP SWEDEN

A Swedish robotics company has teamed up with hotels to create a robot that uses guests’ sleep patterns for art. The Acne company and Ibis hotels will portray sleep data on canvas through a robot connected to bedding that monitors temperature, body movement and pressure on the mattress, sounds and vibrations. The Sweet Bed captures all this through 80 sensors, and the data is sent to a robot installed in the hotel’s lobby. The robot then transforms the sleep data into digital art. Only three Ibis hotels in Paris, London and Berlin will have the high-tech bedding.

Poor old Julia Gillard. Even when she’s not trying to she brings sexism to politics. This time it was when she took a stumble while on tour in India. The PM slipped in wet grass and landed spread-eagled in front of photographers. But Ms Gillard’s tumble showed a strength of character when she laughed it off – she showed the true Aussie spirit of being able to take the piss out of yourself. However she still managed to bring politic’s topic du jour into it: sexism. She said it was an occupational hazard for

Trouble with footwear seems to follow Ms Gillard – she lost a shoe as she was being whisked from the Australia Day riot in Canberra in January. Move over The Macarana, get to the back of the wedding reception playlist Nutbush and don’t even bother learning the Melbourne shuffle, there’s a new craze sweeping the world – Gangnam Style. Not since political fashionista Kim Jong-il has the world seen such a camp figure come out of the Korean peninsula. But unlike up north, the South Korean government is jumping on board and encouraging tourists to not just learn the moves, but see the city of Gangnam. In July, the music video for Gangnam Style was uploaded onto YouTube and received about 500,000 views on its first day and has since entered the Guinness Book of Records as the most “liked” video in YouTube history. The internet phenomenon is the brainchild of South Korean rapper Park Jae-sangknown commonly as Psy, a K-Pop sensation (although it took his arrival in Sydney for me to notice.) I know I’m a bit late to the party as even my two year old niece, who can’t remember what she had for breakfast, can sing the song and bust out the dance moves. But can a chubby middle-aged Asian man who gyrates like a long lost member of the Village People really boost tourism in South Korea? According the Korea Tourism Organization who is using the song to promote the country and its culture, it can. Adeline Goh, senior marketing manager of the Organization says the video has made people “sit up and notice Korea and especially the Gangnam area in Seoul.” I’m still at a loss to figure out how this plump man’s horse riding style dance moves can gain such a worldwide following, but it seems like I am alone. Psy has even broken into the indie music scene having been booked at next year’s Future Music Festival. Something tells me that by March when the festival hits the country, Psy and his “Oppa” dance moves will be past their used-by date. For South Korea’s sake, I hope I am wrong.

KING ISLAND Escape the mainland crowds and explore some of Australia’s quietest, cheapest and most rewarding dive sites. The Tassie waters maybe chillier, but that just means there’s different stuff to see, like towering kelp forests, sea dragons and plenty of seals. Great diving spots litter Tassie’s east coast, Flinders Island and Rocky Cape in the north. But to really get off the beaten track then head to former sealer station King Island, bang in the middle of Bass Strait. Over 60 shipwrecks fill the surrounding waters. Get there by flying from Melbourne or a number of Tassie towns.

The scenery and tranquillity are second to none in Australia. It’s just a really beautiful place to hang out in, although it can be quite cold, even during the summer. HIGHLIGHT OF THE TRIP? We spent the afternoon skimming rocks on Dove Lake and Ronny Creek at Cradle – the sun was shining, the birds were singing and the sky was blue – it was so peaceful.

The sites where we put our tents up, that was perfect for bbq and campfire. Just sitting out drinking beers, looking up at the thousands of stars, was wonderful. WHERE NEXT? GREAT AUSTRALIAN BIGHT When you think of Australia, you think of the unique shape the country is known for. The world famous underside of this shape is known as the Great Australian Bight, ironically due to the fact that it resembles a bite mark. The whole area (including the Indian Ocean) makes up this uniquely South Australian geography. The coast of the bight consists of cliff faces, surfing beaches and popular rock platforms for viewing the vast ocean. It would be impossible to explore every aspect of the Great Australian Bight in one lifetime but start with the great rock features along the coast and work your way across South Australia from there.

The legal sector is one such area with opportunities. The money on offer is good for funding your travels too. Legal secretaries can expect to earn $25-30/hour, while litigation support paralegals are looking at $24-$30/ hour plus superannuation. But are there actually any jobs at the moment, we hear you ask? Well, we put that question to Rosemary Galic, Law Staff’s senior consultant in Sydney. “We anticipate that opportunities for temporary staff and contractors will increase in February through to March,” she said. “Assignments that we are most likely to be briefed on are legal secretarial and 64

paralegal opportunities.” Law firms are looking for people who are flexible and free to move about, which is incidentally one of the best things about being a traveller. “Be flexible about the type of work you are prepared to do, the length of the assignments you are prepared to take on (whether long, very short or for an indefinite period) and the location in which you are prepared to work,” says Rosemary. “Also be ready to take on work at short notice as most temporary assignments come about with a very short lead time.” And just say you want to move about as you travel?
