Golden tickets The winners have been announced for TNT’s annual Golden Backpack Awards, celebrating backpacking’s best Down Under WORDS ALEX HARMON

If you spotted a mistake or two in last week’s magazine, we apologise. We had a big (ahem, read boozy) week you see, as TNT Magazine hosted the cream of the Australian and New Zealand backpacking industry at a fancy do in Sydney (with none other than Dr Karl Kennedy providing the entertainment), as we were announcing the winners of our prestigious Golden Backpack Awards. If you’re new to the country, you might not be too sure what the Golden Backpacks are, but we can guarantee you’ll find their results useful. The reason for this is that they’re kind of like the Oscars for the budget travel industry (only with a couple of 6

TNTDOWNUNDER.COM

extra goon stains on the red carpet). However, unlike the Oscars, the Golden Backpacks celebrate the best hostels, tour companies and travel agents Down Under and, most importantly, they are voted for by you, our readers. Indeed, over a 10-week period between July and September, we received almost 80,000 votes from your good selves, so thanks to all those who took the time. We love you. And that’s what makes the results you’ll find over the next few pages so important. These aren’t some mutual appreciation back-slapping industry gongs handed out by the travel industry to itself. These are Australia and New Zealand’s only consumer-

voted awards for the independent travel sector. Afterall, when looking to book anything from a bed to a tour, who are you going to trust more – the travel agent who will earn a commission from your booking, or your new-found buddy who’s just got back from where you’re heading? Word of mouth is king, which is why we decided to set up these annual awards a few years back, to give you a helping hand. Aren’t we nice? So read on and check out the names on the following few pages, as these are the companies deemed the best of the best at what they ›› do, as chosen by you.

Daniel Merriweather The RnB singer talks about living the high life in LA, returning home to Melbourne for Christmas, and why telling Jay Z to fuck off was actually a good idea INTERVIEW CAITLIN STANWAY

Who would be your ultimate artist to write for? There are some great, talented artists in the charts at the moment. I think Rhianna’s an amazing artist. The way she expresses her personality, I think is really cool, so I’d like to write something for her. Living in LA, have you been star-struck? The only time I’ve ever really been properly star-struck was when I first met Jay Z, that would probably be the only time. I don’t think you can walk into a room and not be star-struck, he sort of has this presence about him, but I’ve slowly gotten over.

“Jay Z was moving in on my girl”

So Dan, you’re in LA at the moment? Yeah, I’m living down here in LA and I love it! But Melbourne has to take the cake for places to live. It’s my hometown, it’s where my family is. Whenever I go back there I’ve always got a smile on my face. You’re back for Foreshore, where’s your first stop when you touch down? My friend is a designer so I usually see him and stock up on the new gear he’s been cooking up. Then hang out with my brothers and get a beer. Whose on the Foreshore must-see list? I’m just really looking forward to seeing everyone. I always discover new artists and get inspired to see everyone there, so it will be really good fun. I’m really looking forward to catching Sam Sparrow’s set at Homebake as well. Homebake is in December, will you hang around for Christmas? Yeah I’ll definitely stick around and hang with the fam. I haven’t seen them for a while so it will be good to hang out with them. What’s a Merriweather Christmas like? We’ve never been big into celebration you know.

12

TNTDOWNUNDER.COM

We enjoy each others company, so we’ll just hang out. Has living in the US changed your sound? Living in LA with the sun and fresh air, well not real fresh actually, it’s probably changed, if anything, my mentality. So you know, mentality is music, so who knows what this next album will sound like. Paint me a picture of your next album? I can’t. I really can’t, at the moment it’s a collection of songs in really rough forms. I’m definitely going to get into the studio soon and get a band together to try find a sound that fits these songs. I really wanna go back to the 90’s and early 2000’s influences like RnB and soul. Any collaborators for the new album? I’ve been working on other people’s music projects at the moment, so haven’t really got into the realm of collaborations for mine. But I’ve been working with this guy called Justyn Pilbrow who used to be in this band called LMNOP from New Zealand. He’s incredibly talented, so that would be the first collaboration for the album probably.

Any embarrassing celeb encounters? Yeah actually, I had a shocker with Jay Z. I went to Beyonce’s birthday a couple of years ago and Jay Z was there. It was this kind of intimate setting in the Hamptons and I got a bit drunk and thought Jay Z was moving in on my girl. So I sort of aggressively told him to ‘fuck off’, but in that kind of Australian way, you know? You don’t mean to sound rude, but it comes out as rude. Some introduction! How did he take that? He kind of just stood there absolutely shocked, and I stormed off. Then I walked back into the room and he was playing chess and I said something weird like ‘how can you be playing chess after four shots of Patron?’ and he looked at me again dumbfounded. Since then we’ve been actually a lot closer than we normally probably would have been because we went through this awkward introductory stage. You’ve done well, it’s gotta be hard to make an impression on Jay Z! [Laughs] I have, I have! Sometimes you’ve gotta get into arguments with people before they take you seriously!

Catch Daniel Merriweather at the Foreshore Festival in Canberra (Nov 24) foreshorefestival.com.au, and Homebake Festival in Sydney (Dec 8) homebake.com.au

THE INTOUCHABLES FILM review by Hugh Radojev STARRING: Francois Cluzet, Omar Sy, Audrey Fleurot | M | 112 min

MAN WITH THE IRON FISTS FILM preview. Released December 6 Russell Crowe, Lucy Liu, RZA | TBA | 95 mins

On the hunt for a fabled treasure of gold, a band of warriors, assassins, and a rogue British soldier descend upon a village in feudal China, where a humble blacksmith looks to defend himself and his fellow villagers. This looks to be a sort of neo-noir take on the classic outrageous Kung Fu movie. Looking forward to seeing director/actor/rapper DZA smashing fools. HR

This film became something of a cultural phenomena in France when it was released in 2011, and now it has begun to capture the hearts of audiences worldwide. It follows the heartbreaking, yet humorous, story of a disenfranchised Senegalese man living just above the poverty line on the mean outskirts of Paris who becomes the carer of a fabulously wealthy quadriplegic. While this description may not sound like a barrel of laughs, trust me when I say that this really is an amusing film. The humour oozes from the two main characters – the paralysed Phillipe (played wonderfully well by Cluzet) and the strapping young Driss (played by an equally magnificent Omar Sy). The genuine affection they come to have for one another plays out beautifully in their laugh-out-loud banter. The secondary characters, who also care for the invalid Phillipe, similarly play great supporting roles, particularly the fiery and beautiful Magalie (Audrey Fleurot) the object of Driss’ desires. Other reviewers have been less charitable to the film, some going as far as to label it a Driving Miss Daisy without the excuses for the black character being in servitude to the rich, white benefactor. Without going into the delicate race relations that exist within modern French society, the film portrays the relationship between the two men – black and white – in a sensitive and engaging way. Such a view might be grounded in post-colonial academic discourses, but it detracts from what is a very well made, and generally lovely film. GOOD FOR: Anyone in the mood for a laugh and a warm fuzzy feeling at the end

Band of brothers Yorkshire cult band The Cribs will soon be knocking on Aussie doors hoping to win over new fans with their punk-rock stylings WORDS HUGH RADOJEV

Photos: Steve Gullick, Getty Images

The Cribs have toured the world, released several critically acclaimed albums, and until recently, counted legendary guitarist Johnny Marr amongst their members. And yet, the Yorkshire band have always flown a bit under the radar here in Australia. Comprised of three brothers: twins Gary (vocals and bass) and Ryan Jarman (lead guitar and vocals) and younger brother Ross (drums), The Cribs have, for a number of years now, been a huge deal in the UK. In 2008, they were labeled “The biggest cult band in the UK,” after releasing perhaps their best known album, Men’s Needs, Women’s Needs, Whatever in the same year. The band started as a recording project for the brothers in 2001 when Gary and Ryan set up their own analogue studio in an ancient mill in the north of England and recorded and produced their first demos. This hands on attitude was inspired by the punk rock movement in the late 1970s and has, in a sense, come to define The Cribs sound. Yet as Ryan Jarman explains, it is not an image thing for the band so much as it is just a matter of convenience. “We absolutely do stick to that punk ethos still, but not for any dogmatic reasons, it just makes more sense that way. Those are the ethics that were instilled in us when we were growing up. Gary and I kind of grew up in that sort of Fanzine culture and we’ve always tried to eschew all that rock star bullshit.” This is a band who, at the very beginning, would pack all their gear into a van and drive up and down the UK offering to play warehouses and house parties for free just to refine their craft and spread the word. It is clear by talking to Ryan that he is a man without pretension and is very reserved when it comes to talking about himself. When asked how long he has been playing the guitar for he pauses and says “Oh, I dunno, maybe since I was a teenager. I never really learnt properly though, I try not to be too academic about it.” This from a man who has stood shoulder to shoulder on stages around the world with one of alternative music’s most celebrated lead guitarists – former Smiths legend Johnny Marr for four years. Combine that with the evidence of

Why can't a love song be short fast and loud?

Ryan’s work on The Cribs’ newest album In the Belly of the Brazen Bull proves – if nothing else – that the guy can clearly play a guitar. In the Belly of the Brazen Beast is arguably the clearest summation yet of what The Cribs are really about; this is guitar driven punk-pop laden with hooks and catchy choruses. Album opener Glitters like Gold has fuzzy distortion and rounded edges, whilst lead single Come on, Be a No-One struts and swaggers its way through two and a half minutes, pivoting unashamedly around the brash call to arms for the faceless proletariat that gives the song its name. It doesn’t matter that the verses in this song don’t really go anywhere – you could hang half a tonnes worth of prime steer carcass off the hook. Whilst the music might sound, at times, kind of shallow (if that’s the right word) the lyrical content of the songs, in some cases at least, came from dark places. On face value, the song Chi-Town is a fairly unremarkable three-chord punk banger, and yet on closer inspection proves to be much more than that. Written by Ryan, Chi-Town details a story of love lost that he had not felt comfortable discussing, let alone writing about, for the best part of a decade. “The song is about a very great regret of mine, I was supposed to move to Chicago a long time ago and marry this girl but it didn’t work out,” says Ryan, speaking honestly about the experience. “That’s what punk rock is though, it’s all about emotion. Why can’t a love song be short, fast and loud? Why does it have to be quiet and slow?” It is a very consistent and coherent record, remarkably so, in fact. Along with producing a song on the album

From the cradle to the crib: the brothers are glad to be a trio again

themselves, The Cribs ended up using tracks from sessions with two producers, Steve Albini of Nirvana and Pixies fame, and David Fridmann whose producing credits include Pinkerton by Weezer and The Soft Bulletin by The Flaming Lips. They also started session work with former Queen producer David Richards, sessions that, in the end, were abandoned. However, when asked whether or not working with so many different producers and in so many different studios

around the world was a concern for the band at the time Ryan Jarman insists it was a deliberate choice. “It was just good being back together as a trio and we thought to ourselves, why don’t we just do what we want? It was sort of a case of being like, we love Pinkerton so why don’t we see if we can work with Dave Fridmann? Or I’m a huge fan of Steve Albini’s so why don’t we see if he’s available? That’s kind of how it happened.” It was the sessions with Fridmann that seem to have proven the most fruitful as nine of the songs from In the Belly of the Brazen Beast emanated from the band's work with the American producer in New York State. “He’s very, very open,” said Jarman. “In the studio he’s just like 'do what you want.' It was all about using sounds that you never hear, using different pedals and stuff.” The freedom afforded to the Yorkshire lads in the studio does come across in the album, it is a slightly less sonically polished album than their last effort, 2009's Ignore the Ignorant, but it doesn’t suffer for it. If anything, it actually makes the album sound stronger and perhaps a little bit more honest. Armed with their new album The Cribs will be visiting our shores early next year playing the Pyramid Rock Festival in Victoria as well as a few shows on the east coast. With Come on, Be a No-One getting plenty of love on Triple J, The Cribs stocks are surely set to rise in Australia. So, if The Cribs haven't surfaced on your radar yet, it's best to take note now and get on board. ❚

The Cribs will play the Pyramid Rock Festival (Dec 29-Jan 1), Sydney (Jan 2), Melbourne (Jan 4). See: thecribs.com

WEEKLY WINNER INTO THE BLUE: Charmaine Blanch, UK CHARMAINE SAYS: “This is a photo I took at Turquoise Bay It’s a picture of the crystal clear waves crashing on a sand bar with Ningaloo Reef in the background!” WE SAY: “A lovely photograph of the crystal clear waters that give one of WA’s most visited tourist attractions its well earned name. The power and majesty of the sea wonderfully captured and juxtaposed against the serenity of the sandbank. Well done Charmaine!”

HOT TIPS: Wide angles Get a tripod! In sports photography for instance, the common perception is to zoom in to get as much action as possible into one tight frame. In some cases, this isn’t possible: perhaps you are too close to your subject or you don’t have the right equipment. When using your wide angle lens, the trick is to be creative so that your subject doesn’t become a tiny dot in a huge wide frame. A tripod will help you here, allowing the camera to either stand or pan steadily allowing you to keep your subject in focus without blurring anything or missing the action. Love them or hate them, tripods are a necessity.

DESTINATION: HICKSVILLE

While trying to drive across the Simpson Desert, LIZZIE JOYCE and her partner were forced to hitch a ride with some dodgy truckers. My boyfriend Dan and I were attempting to cross the Simpson Desert on our way to Alice Springs from Sydney. We set off in our 4WD loaded with equipment, including 60 litres of water, a double swag and a laser beam. After 10 hours of driving, watching the landscape turn from highways and tall buildings to red earth and eternal horizons, we glided past an old mining town called Cobar, stopped for a wee and drove on through, thankful that this ‘Hicksville’ town was not our destination. But while driving at an average speed of 120km per hour, the trusty car (which I was assured had “just had a full service and was made for driving across such terrain”) was disintegrating and the entire wheel was about to fall off. Suddenly the brakes started to fail and smoke started pouring out of the front passenger tyre. We were 120km from the last town and with at least 100km to the next, Dan decided we should drive on (without brakes) and see if we could make it to our destination. Luckily it didn’t last long anyway as the car stopped in defiance and we were forced to pull off the

24

road in the middle of nowhere. Within minutes two semi-trailers ,driven in convoy by brothers, pulled up to offer us help. They weren’t exactly the knights in shining armour I had hoped for, these two ugly truckers. Freaky Brother One began to undress me with his eyes, almost frothing at the mouth at coming in such close proximity to someone of the opposite sex, while Freaky Brother Two was pretending to be a mechanic, baffling Dan with his bullshit. It was turning into Wolf Creek. Nothing could be done with the car, and we had no choice but to accept a lift from Freaky Brother One to the nearest roadhouse 13km up the road. But then he said there wouldn’t be enough room in the cab so Dan should travel with his brother and I should hop into his cab by myself. I was close to hysteria. There was no way I would be getting in that lorry by myself. So we both hopped in with Brother Number Two. Dan settled in the middle of the very spacious cab which had enough room to house a small Albanian family! I thought it would be plain sailing from here. But after a couple of minutes, Brother Number One starts becoming agitated – he thinks he has lost his keys as he can’t use the radio to contact his brother. He pulls onto the

side of the road and asks me to hop out to see if he had left them in the door lock. This forced me into ungraceful acrobatic maneuvers in order to hang myself out the door and reach round to grab the keys, with Freaky Brother One more than enjoying the view of my ass in the air. The keys were there, so off we set again in stilted silence. Finally we caught sight of the roadhouse and saw our escape was only minutes away – we made a sharp exit from the freaky brothers. The roadhouse turned out to be a petrol pump and a shop that was about to close. They had a phone though and we arranged for a tow truck to pick us up and take us back to the nearest town: Cobar (the Hicksville town we’d previously scorned) where we would have to wait for the next three days for the car to be repaired. How ironic that the town we were laughing at turned out to be our refuge.

GUNNS PLAINS

CAVE

Hidden beneath the picturesque farmland of Guns Plains is a fascinating world of caves, sinkholes and underground streams. Located in the Gunns Plains State Reserve, the caves are around 30 kilometres south of Ulverstone in north-west Tasmania. This 10 hectare area was one of the earliest cave reserves in Tasmania, being proclaimed a State Reserve in 1918. The cave was discovered in 1906 by local Gunns Plain man, Bill Woodhouse during a hunting trip. It is reputed that one of his dogs fell into a hole that formed part of the cave. These days it is renowned for its magnificent formations, including calcite shawls and flowstones, and has a glow-worm display. The cave was formed by an underground river that still flows and contains freshwater crayfish, fish and eel. Platypus sleep and nest in the sandy banks along the river. Camping, accommodation and refreshments are also available nearby. If you’re wanting to enjoy this rare gem, see the stunning cave formations, the rich colours and the sparkling crystals which are all equally breathe taking then make sure to pack your most comfortable shoes. The cave consists of a series of caverns and short passages through which visitors are escorted along well lit concrete pathways. Upon entry a steep flight of 54 concrete steps are descended and from this point the pathway is fairly level apart from a short ladder to be climbed down. The tour route through the cave is some 275 meters long. The cave is renowned for its magnificent shawl and flowstone formations and the recent improvements will assist visitors to enjoy the cave experience. Interpretive guided tours of the cave are run daily at 10am, 11am, and 12pm, 1.30pm, 2.30pm and 3.30pm. See: gunnsplainscaves.com.au for more info.

THIRSTY WORK FOR SOME: SEVEN SHEDS BREWERY No road trip around the north west should be complete without a trip to a brewery (note: we do not condone drink driving, make sure you have a friend willing to play DD for the day!) Seven Sheds Brewery Meadery and Hop Garden in Railton Tasmania is not just perfectly placed for a postCradle Mountain refresher, it also makes for a great afternoon of beery history, where visitors have the chance to meet the brewers and try a few of the flavours. Owners Willie Simpson and Catherine Stark opened the Seven Sheds brewery in May 2008 and today their meadery and hop garden provides a purpose built tasting room, brewery tours and cellar door sales. The couple are one of the smallest beer producers in the country and thus have the luxury of being able to use 100 per cent estate-grown hop flowers. We stopped by during our Tassie road trip and were treated to a tour of the brewery, where they brew some of their beer in milk vats! We even went out into the garden and picked some hops in the sunshine. We were also treated to a few different tastings of ‘Sheds brew. I must say the ‘Razzamatazz’ was my favourite with its raspberry infused, happy, hoppy flavour. For more on Seven Sheds, head to: sevensheds.com

Shark tales Fiji might be famous for its perfect beaches, but it also boasts some of the most exciting underwater experiences on the planet WORDS ANDREW WESTBROOK

“Remember when sex was safe and diving Under the water it quickly becomes clear was dangerous?” reads one of the endless we’re no longer in the land of ‘Fiji Time’. WHAT TO DO: Beqa Lagoon dive stickers that dot our boat. I stare at it Brandan has plenty of troops and they’re shark dive with Aqua Trek in awe. After all, I’m about to jump in the well in control. A sight like that would often be the reputation for being one of the world’s most exciting dives. highlight of a dive, but here it’s just the sideshow, a circus That reputation is born out, it seems, by the inhabitants of my boat – all experienced divers hailing from as diverse a group as nations as the USA, Slovenia, the UK, South Africa, New Caledonia, Australia, New Zealand and Panama. The dives began back in 1999. They were started, as all such craziness seems to be, by a South African. “All the resorts thought I was mad and didn’t want to get involved at first,” the man himself, Brandan Paige, tells me. And, in a way, the so-called ‘shark whisperer’ is mad. But there’s also no denying the Beqa dive industry owes it all to him. “The other resorts entered the market a year and a half after me,” continues Brandan. “They’d decided it was safe. Aqua Trek customers had been the guinea pigs.” And with not a single incident in all those years so far, that analysis seems fair. However, edging towards the back of the boat, there’s only one thought going through my mind. “There’s a Found you! first time for everything.”

freak vying for a part amongst the lion tamers and acrobats. The running of the bulls Some of the stars, a few big bull sharks, have arrived. The giant ball of feasting sways left and right, every now and then dissected by a bull lunging in, prompting panicked flurries of escape in every direction. And the bulls are most definitely big. Without my phalanx of protectors, I wouldn’t stand a chance if they fancied a go. But they don’t seem bothered. They swim right past, only a couple of metres away, and pay no attention. Several times one emerges from the swarm and heads straight for me, its giant frame, with its hulking shoulders and mean, frowning face, a picture perfect example of an untameable predator. Each time it gives me a derisory sneer before veering off to terrify some other hapless creature. Strangely enough, however, it’s more exhilarating than terrifying. In fact, it really does feel safe, as well as absolutely mesmerising and engrossing. Indeed, having dived across the world, including having jumped into a couple of cages to see great whites, this is the best I’ve experienced. I simply don’t want to leave. Yet soon enough we hear the tapping on tanks that is the signal for our departure, which is also the most unnerving part of the dive. We head back up through the open water, and hover for our three minute rest stop, knowing that no small number of large sharks are very close. But that, we soon learn, was just the warm-up act. An hour on the boat to refuel, chatter excitedly and let yet more big sharks work out there’s food in the area and we’re back in, this time heading to a different location where we all perch behind a small wall. This, it soon becomes clear, is where the main show takes place. And soon enough, a dozen or more bull sharks have joined the party, ducking in from the sides, swimming straight at us once more. Movement is everywhere. Fins, teeth, flesh, fish heads. 36

There’s no doubt that danger is all around, but it’s never felt, the troops marshalling both the divers and sharks in a way that is under control, the maniacs even hand-feeding giant heads to the bulls before darting out of the way. The scene in front of us is nature at its most brutal and beautiful, hectic and somehow harmonious. There must be hundreds, if not thousands of creatures just metres away, all with senses on full alert, and yet from our position, I’m

surreally calm, as though David Attenborough’s soft tones are easing me through the experience in my head. No tigers show up (it had been a week since the last appearance), but I don’t even realise until long after the dive, when I can finally begin to comprehend what I’ve been lucky enough to witness. Meeting mantas It’s not just travellers who love visiting the paradise islands of the Yasawas, but manta rays too Bom, bom, bom, bom! The sound of drumming echoes through the trees as I stir in my bunk. That means either breakfast or manta rays. Both good options, but what to take – snorkel or appetite? Pausing a moment I hear the rubbery sounds of people scurrying past. Manta rays it is then. I’m on Nanuya Balavu Island, home to the cunningly-

named Mantaray Resort, having island hopped for three hours through the Mamanucas and halfway up the Yasawas. Here, almost daily during the right season (May to October), mantas are spotted in the channel round the corner from the resort. And each time that eyes are laid on one of these giant beauties, which can grow up to 7 metres wide, the drum call goes out and we’ve got a few minutes to get to the beach and make the departing boat. So on we get and off we go. A few swift minutes ride and we’re there. Almost immediately we spot the first small fin atop a large shadow and, splash, we’re in. And there it is, right below us. Massive, elegant, playful, it floats through the powerful current like a magic carpet. Flapping its wings, it mouth agape. It soars past at a speed impossible to compete with, dragging its long spear-like tail behind it. I try not to think about Steve Irwin. Having been lured into the current by our first sighting, we hitch a lift back to the top of the channel and go in search once again. We spot a few more, each several metres wide. One of them sits below us for a good five minutes, contentedly devouring the plankton which the current delivers straight into its mouth while I swim frantically above it, desperately fighting the current to stay in position. Once it finally decides to move on, I’m knackered, which means one thing – back to the beach.

getting to know the family is as important as sipping cocktails in a hammock. It’s also happens to offer experiences the larger resorts would be terrified of running – such as shark feeding snorkel trips. After about 15 minutes, with land a long way off in every direction, we come to a stop. Si suddenly strips off, grabs his spear (basically a metal rod with a big rubber band) and jumps into the water. It turns out we’re right on top of Mouya Reef. We wait several minutes until Si reappears, victorious, with a parrot fish skewered on his spear. The gleaming parrot fish is handed over and duly ripped in two. No sentimentality for beauty here, it’s once stunning body now a crushed mess. It’s now our turn to jump in. Skirting the edge of the reef, Fish soon points out the first whitetip reef shark. And then another. And another. They’re not big, perhaps 1-1.5m, but they’re sharks, sharks with teeth, and our guide Fish (this could get confusing) is carrying a dead fish. Paddling around above them, it’s hard not to feel vulnerable, unsure of what’s about to happen. They begin circling us, five of them in total. Starting a few metres below us, Fish gives them a sight of the bait, held close to his chest until now, and their interest steps up a notch. They’re suddenly at our level. I keep an eye on one as it passes me to my left, only to have a second bump past me on the right. Keeping track of them all is near impossible. Fish starts stroking them on the back of the neck as they pass, so I Fin fetish follow suit. The skin is leathery and the shark picks up speed, but seems to crane upwards like a cat. It seems to like it. The Fed up of crowds and, er, safety precautions? Escape the food gone, the sharks hang around, wondering if more will masses with a more hands-on shark experience. It’s straight after breakfast and three of us join our Fijian come. Either that or they’re just trying to work out what sort of crazy creatures we are, dropping out of the sky, useless in hosts Fish and Si to head off, straight out to sea. Behind us the water and giving them food in return for a sly grope. we’re leaving Wayalailai Island. Naqalia Lodge to be more Do they feel used? Do they feel dirty? Probably just a bit precise. It’s a small, family-run place, a lodge where the handful of bures were tents only a few years ago and where less hungry. ❚ TNTDOWNUNDER.COM

TRAVELWEEKENDER

Freedom city This is Perth in 48 hours WORDS MICHÈLE GIEBING

DAY 1: xGorgeous weather, loads of adventure, action and entertainment, an easygoing mentality and beautiful beaches. Perth really does have a perfect combination of big attractions in relaxed surroundings. 8:00: Start the day of adventure with a big breakfast in a teeny tiny place in trendy Northbridge: Little Willy’s. The food is simple, yet delicious and, unlike the name suggests, size does matter – the servings are huge! 9:00: Since you’re in the neighbourhood already, wander around the Art Gallery of Western Australia (artgallery. wa.gov.au) and check out the huge variety of work. It’s especially worth a visit from August to December, as you’ll be able to catch the annual WA Indigenous Art Awards entrants on display. What’s even better is it’s free to enter. 12:00: Whilst visiting a mint probably isn't high on most people's agenda when on holiday, The Perth Mint (perthmint.com.au) is surely the exception to the rule. Establish in 1899 the Mint is packed with a huge amount of things to see and do. Apart from watching legal tender being minted, you can design and make your very own coins, whether you'd prefer silver or gold is entirely up to you. 15:00: Ever wanted to give windsurfing a go? Try it at Port or Leighton beach. Rather stay high and dry? Hiring a bike is a good alternative to be active and explore the city and the beaches at the same time. 17:30: Make sure you head over to Cottesloe Beach for a magnificent sunset. Next to the beautiful beach, this

easygoing suburb is also famous for its cafes and bohemian lifestyle. With plenty of places to either eat, drink or just sit and watch the sun set over one of the West's great beaches. 18:00: Feeding time! Perth has one of the best new restaurant scenes in the country, so watch out Sydney and Melbourne! Indulge in a variety of unique restaurants but keep a close watch on the prices if you’re on a budget. Perth can be quite expensive when it comes to food. Red Teapot (redteapotrestaurant.com.au) might just be what you’re looking for. The broad range of Chinese food is reasonably priced and very tasty. 20:00: Greenhouse (greenhouseperth.com) is the only rooftop bar in town and definitely worth a visit. It’s not just the rooftop that makes it so special, it’s the herbs and veggies that actually grow there. As fresh as it can get – from the rooftop, straight to the kitchen. They didn’t call it the ‘Greenhouse’ for nothing, obviously. 21:30: The Amplifier (amplifiercapitol.com.au) is the place to go to for good live music. Great for catching the latest in local and international indie bands. DAY 2: 9:00: Head over to trendy Fremantle and explore the edgy and creative surrounds. You’ll know what I’m talking about once you set foot in Moore & Moore (mooreandmoorecafe.com). This café in Freo offers breakfast “that will fill you just fine and leave feeling dandy” – at least that’s what they say. Everybody deserves a treat every now and then, so go on and order one of their

tempting cakes “that will make you drool”. 12:00: The Fremantle Prison (fremantleprison.com. au) is a dominant feature in town. There are different tours you can take, varying from the Doing Time Tour, the Great Escapes Tour, Torchlight Tours and last but not least, The Tunnels Tour. Only taking a quick look? The Prison Gallery, gift shop and Convict café are free of charge. 14:00: Gino’s (ginoscafe.com.au) is Fremantle’s most famous café, attracting both locals and visitors. Gino’s is known for its delicious coffee, but it also has a good lunch menu, including focaccias, paninis, bagels and wraps. 15:00: Coffee buzz? Good! Let’s go for a walk. You can pick up some trail cards at the visitor centre or the library (or check fremantletrails.com.au) and choose from the eleven self-guided walking tours. 18:00: About time for a Perth staple – fish and chips – at Cicerello’s (cicerellos.com.au). You’re never too old to be fascinated by aquariums and this restaurant has quite a few. Hint: don’t forget to check the toilets. 20:30: Unwind and grab a beer at Norfolk Hotel (norfolkhotel.com.au). It’s a refreshing place for an ale and most nights they have gigs in their basement. 21:30: Don’t lose your mojo at Mojo’s (mojosbar.com.au), especially not on a Monday night. It’s open mic night after all! Don’t worry, you can just chill in the beer garden too. The small venue hosts local and national bands. Don’t forget to bring your dancing shoes.

The Perth Mint gives visitors the opportunity to share in the splendour of pure gold through its unique combination of dazzling attractions.

Naked ambition: Contestants in the Body Art Fashion bare all during the NZ Trotting Cup Day at Addington Raceway, Christchurch, New Zealand

Smelly haul: digested gems

MUGGLER SWALLOWS 220 DIAMONDS SOUTH AFRICA

A suspected smuggler swallowed 220 diamonds worth £1.4m before a flight from Johannesburg to Dubai. The unnamed Lebanese man, 25, was stopped at O.R. Tambo International Airport, and given laxatives to flush the valuable stones out of his system. Spokesman Paul Ramaloko said: “Our officers were tipped off about his activities and detained him at the airport. He was then taken for examination and we found around 220 pieces of diamond inside him.” The suspect was detained by the elite ‘Hawks’ investigations unit and is due to appear before a magistrate on Thursday.

BREACHING WHALE LANDS ON BOAT SOUTH AFRICA

Three men were injured after a breaching whale leapt out of the sea off South Africa, landing on their boat. The vessel was motoring slowly about 1km off Port Elizabeth when the mammal crashed into it. “The boat and all three men went under the water as the whale sunk back into the sea,” Ian Grey, National Sea

One, a 41-year-old man, was seriously hurt, with suspected rib fractures and injuries to his arm, leg and soft tissue. While the species of whale is unknown, Grey said breaching humpback whales have been spotted in the area. In 2010, a couple whale-watching in waters off Cape Town got a shock when a southern right whale jumped out of the water, snapping the mast on their boat. South Africa is on the humpback’s migratory route, with the ocean giants returning to Antarctic waters toward the end of the year.

50 SHADES OF DIVORCE

UNITED KINGDOM A woman has filed for divorce after her husband refused to recreate scenes from racy, novel Fifty Shades Of Grey. The 41-year-old banker, who earns £400,000 a year, wanted to spice up their love life after buying the book. However, her husband wasn’t up for it, so the woman filed for divorce. Lawyer Amanda McAlister said the couple’s sex life had deteriorated: “She told him he had a boring attitude to sex and she was fed up.” The husband’s “lack of adventure” and “unreasonable behaviour” counts as one of the five grounds for divorce.

Kiwis could soon be left to toke in peace as cannabis campaigners urge the government to relax weed laws. It’s an old-fashioned punishment (and one that has no proven merit), but public shaming is still alive and kicking in the US. A 32-year-old woman from Cleveland was caught driving on a pavement in order to avoid hitting a school bus last week, but instead of being slapped with a fine or a few points off her license, she was ordered to hold a sign on the side of the road with the words: “Only an idiot would drive on the sidewalk to avoid a school bus”. Now, we all know women can’t drive

avoiding the “busSurely is a positive ” (joke, relax!) but surely a driver avoiding onslaught with a bus is a positive outcome. And I’m no police officer, but one thing I did note was that the woman was caught out because the bus driver was filming her as she merged onto the pavement. Isn’t putting children’s lives at risk by using your mobile phone a crime too? Get that bus driver some cardboard!

They say you shouldn’t bite the hand that feeds you, even if that hand does belong to Alf Stewart. Melissa George, who you might remember as Angel from Home and Away, returned home last week and was doing her very best to shed her past. She launched a tirade on the Australian media when a breakfast show host had the audacity to reference her braided-hair character from Summer Bay. Although she was in town to promote her new BBC TV show, Hunted, the station thought she’d be best referenced by a montage of Angel (we’re not sure if it was the scene where she is carried down the aisle by her high school principal – who was also her Dad) but whatever it was, it was Nineties footage, so it was guaranteed to be tacky as all hell. Anyway, here is what George had to say on the introduction: “Right behind my head was [sic] pictures of Angel and on the montage they called me ‘Home & Away’ actress Melissa George. Now it’s because it’s Channel Seven so my next call will be to ‘Home & Away’ to ask them to pay me because nobody does more promotion for that fucking show than me.” And before you can say “flamin’ galah,” George continued her rant, so full of hyperbole and self-righteousness that the producers of the breakfast show actually thought she was playing out some sort of elaborate prank. “I’d rather be having a croissant in Paris or walking my French bulldog in New York City,” she said. “I’m not going to be a good Aussie anymore. I’m going to speak out. I’ve just had it. It’s disgusting. I’ve never spoken out about it because I have to be the loyal good Aussie who goes away and comes home but I’m really hard-working and people have to respect me for what I’ve done.” And if you don’t believe in karma, check this: it has just been announced that her spy drama has been canned after one series by the BBC. Enjoy your French pastries in hell, George.

BATTERED SA ATTACK STILL THE BEST: AMLA CRICKET

Even after taking just five wickets and copping a pasting from Australia’s batsmen in the first Test, South Africa’s superstar fast bowling attack is still “the best”, Hashim Amla has said. The world’s top batsman defended his side’s pacemen, which include the world’s two top-ranked in Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander, after Ed Cowan and Mike Hussey scored centuries and Michael Clarke an unbeaten 259 in their five for 565 declared. “In world cricket there are a lot of good attacks,” he said. “In my opinion, we have the best attack, and Australia and England are also up there.” South Africa has a chance to prove it in the second Test from Thursday on another batter-friendly track in Adelaide, where spinner Imran Tahir is sure to play after being left out in Brisbane for four quicks. The Saffas dominated day one but then the Aussies took over and nearly won after day two was rained out.

EPL CHELSEA V MAN CITY

HIGH-FLYERS HAVE EYES ON MAN U Most teams would be stoked to be in the top three, but not Chelsea and Manchester City. Their epic budgets demand they stand atop the Premier League table or perish. It took a penalty in the 83rd minute for Chelsea to snatch their last match-up at Stamford Bridge – now they meet as the teams chasing leaders Manchester United. Before the weekend’s match with West Bromwich-Albion, Chelsea has been hardly convincing of late: a 5-4 over Man U in extra time after their 3-2 Cup loss, and then EPL draws with Liverpool and Swansea. Man City haven’t fared much better, having drawn 0-0 with West Ham recently. Manager Roberto Mancini is under pressure from the money after his team only scraped past Swansea 1-0 and Tottenham 2-1, too. Encouraging in the Spurs win was the return of David Silva from injury. Since 2010, the sky blues have won 70 per cent of games with the Spanish playmaker and only 44 per cent without him. They also score more and concede less when he’s there.. November 25

JENOLAN CAVES In the heart of the Blue Mountains, stalactites and stalagmites line the walls of the Jenolan Caves. Huge geological structures plaster the walls and cave paintings give colour to an otherwise dark area. Just three hours drive west of Sydney, the Jenolan Caves attract over 250,000 visitors per year, making it the most popular tourist location in rural New South Wales. Offering guided tours, adventure caving and night tours, the Jenolan Caves also boasts great accomodation. There are even underground concerts – taking advantage of the amazing acoustics echoing through the many nooks and crannies of the caves. Make sure you check out the world-famous ghost tours and try not to get lost on your way through. This exciting tourist destination is a must-see for any tourist travelling through the mountains. The spectacular sights and sounds of this freaky cave will spook the fun right into you.

BAIRD BAY Whether it’s cuddling a koala, feeding a kangaroo or diving with sharks, meeting the locals is a big part of travelling around Oz. But perhaps the most overlooked and under-rated animal experience Down Under is swimming with seals. You’re unlikely to find a more friendly, sociable and fun creature in the sea. One of the best places to play around with them is sleepy fishing village Baird Bay, which is home to a large sea lion colony, plus plenty of dolphins. Named after an early settler who got speared by local Aboriginals, remote Baird Bay is also great for escaping the crowds. You’ll find it on the west coast of the Eyre Peninsula, west of Adelaide.

ROW, BRO!

Sarah Chare, UK WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN IN NT SO FAR? Katherine, Darwin, Kakadu, Alice Springs, Uluru, The Olgas and Kings Canyon. FAVOURITE DAY SPOT? Kings Canyon because it was so unexpected. I knew I was going to see Uluru but to find these rock formations that look like an ancient city blew me away. It was all just so beautiful but like no other place on Earth, if you understand what I mean? FAVOURITE NIGHT SPOT? WHY? Darwin’s Deckchair Cinema because you could never have that at home in the UK with the rain.

KAYAKING KATHERINE GORGE Sure, you can empty your wallet for a scenic helicopter flight, or you can join the masses of silver nomads on a boat cruise (especially when the Ghan train is in town), but the best way to really get a croc’s eye feel for the spectacular gorges of Nitmiluk National Park is to jump in a kayak and go for a paddle. It’s also the cheapest way to see them. Double score! Just be careful where you swim.

MAQUARIE ISLAND About halfway between New Zealand and Antarctica lies the south most Australian landmass on the planet, Macquarie Island. This island is the home to an incredibly diverse range of flora and fauna. Penguins, seals and birds are the highest populated animals on this island with numbers reaching well into the millions. The island’s human population usually remains relatively small however, with about 20 to 40 people living on the island at any given time. This is a fantastic tourist destination because the nature remains virtually untouched and if seclusion is your taste, you’re in good hands. It gets pretty cold here, but the island is home to some of Australia’s most adaptable plants and animals. In 1997, Macquarie Island was listed as one of UNESCO’s World Heritage sites, due to the fact that it is the only place in the world where rocks from the mantle are actively exposed at sea level.

Mixing up a job There are plenty of jobs in hospitality, and lots of money if you know a thing or two about cocktails. We chat to a mixologist

MEGAN WISKUS, 22 FROM CALIFORNIA What made you decide to come and work in Australia? A desire to get out, see the world and not jump into the normal 9-5 gig right after I graduated. Sydney was screaming my name! What job are you doing at the moment? I’m a mixologist (mixing cocktails) at the Observatory Hotel How did you get the job? My charm, wit, and good looks! Ok, I found the job by going on seek.com.au and then following up on my application and begging for an interview. What’s the pay like? Enough to let me have a social life and put a roof over my head – food in my stomach, but not enough to live like a queen (although tips are a huge plus!) What job did you have at home? I worked in pubic relations at Sea World and bartending at the West Inn. How does working here compare to back home? It’s way more laidback here and I’m allowed to hang out with my managers (which would be frowned upon back at home). Plus the pay is heaps higher in hospitality here! Any good stories to tell about your new job? On my second shift I dropped, spilled and broke a $30 glass of champagne on a guest. He was soaking wet and had broken glass all over his trousers.
