Dr Karl and Waiting Room strut their stuff

Best of the best The winners have been announced for TNT’s annual Golden Backpack Awards, celebrating backpacking’s best Down Under WORDS ANDREW WESTBROOK

If you spotted a mistake or two in last week’s magazine, we apologise. We had a big (ahem, read boozy) week you see, as TNT Magazine hosted the cream of the Australian and New Zealand backpacking industry at a fancy do in Sydney (with none other than Dr Karl Kennedy providing the entertainment), as we were announcing the winners of our prestigious Golden Backpack Awards. If you’re new to the country, you might not be too sure what the Golden Backpacks are, but we can guarantee you’ll find their results useful. The reason for this is that they’re kind of like the Oscars for the budget travel industry (only with a couple of 8

TNTDOWNUNDER.COM

extra goon stains on the red carpet). However, unlike the Oscars, the Golden Backpacks celebrate the best hostels, tour companies and travel agents Down Under and, most importantly, they are voted for by you, our readers. Indeed, over a 10-week period between July and September, we received almost 20,000 votes from your good selves, so thanks to all those who took the time. We love you. And that’s what makes the results you’ll find over the next few pages so important. These aren’t some mutual appreciation back-slapping industry gongs handed out by the travel industry to itself. These are Australia and New Zealand’s only consumer-

voted awards for the independent travel sector. Afterall, when looking to book anything from a bed to a tour, who are you going to trust more – the travel agent who will earn a commission from your booking, or your new-found buddy who’s just got back from where you’re heading? Word of mouth is king, which is why we decided to set up these annual awards a few years back, to give you a helping hand. Aren’t we nice? So read on and check out the names on the following few pages, as these are the companies deemed the best of the best at what they ›› do, as chosen by you.

ANONYMOUS FILM review by Alex Harmon STARRING: Rhys Ifans, Joley Richardson, Vanessa Redgrave | CERT: M | 130mins

IN TIME FILM STARRING: Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried, Cillian Murphy | CERT: M | 109mins

The saying “time is money” takes on a chilling literal meaning in Andrew Niccol’s latest sci-fi thriller. In the future, rich people can buy themselves immortality while the poor have built-in use by dates. Against this backdrop, Will Salas (Timberlake, further beefing up his acting CV) finds himself accused of murder and on the run from the insidious Timerkeeper police. His only hope is to bring the whole corrupt system down.

Did he or did he not write, that is the question. This film looks at the conspiracy theory that William Shakespeare did not write a single line of verse in his entire life. There has been much speculation over this for hundreds of years, but this is the first film to boldly put a name to the 37 plays and hundreds of sonnets. Pointing the finger at the Earl of Oxford, Edward De Vere, Anonymous is as compelling and dramatic as a Shakespearean drama – whoever he may be. Set in the steaming, foggy depths of London’s south bank in the 1600s, we see Shakespeare as a bumbling, womanising drunk who’s main passion is acting. He is also a cunning business man who sees an opportunity and jumps on it. The film actually portrays him as “the village idiot” and a sub-par actor, which of course strengthens the argument that an illiterate man who hadn’t travelled further than London could not have writen the most brilliant and celebrated plays in the world. Edward, on the other hand, we meet as a talented young poet who, at the age of 12, captures Queen Elizabeth’s heart and goes on to become one of her advisors (and then her lover). For Shakespeare buffs, note the comparisons to Hamlet in their relationship. It’s hard to know what to believe, but based purely on entertainment, this film had me hooked. And for history fans, the background story of Queen Elizabeth’s succession and her incestuous relationships are almost as interesting as the Shakespeare conspiracy theory itself. GOOD FOR: An open discussion on the Bard or an epic drama on the Elizabethan monarchy

PICASSO ART EXHIBITION

BAR

ART

A hidden gem in the middle of corporate Sydney, this small bar is kind of tucked away in a basement. Take the astro-turf stairs underground and order a cup of punch. They change the flavours every day and serve it in an old tin mug. Or if it’s cold, try the Hot-Buttered Rum or the mulled wine. They do faded granny glamour well.

The Musée National Picasso has closed for renovations and so sent its artwork all the way Down Under. This is likely to be the only opportunity to see Picasso’s work on this scale in Australia. These are ‘Picasso’s Picassos’ – the works from his own collection that he left to shape his legacy. On display until March 2012.

Back to the dancefloor With a fourth chart-topping album out and an Aussie tour looming, the Arctic Monkeys are still kings of the indie jungle WORDS ANDREW WESTBROOK

You could say that Nick O'Malley (pictured far left) is one of the luckiest men in music. You see, back in the heady days of 2006 when Arctic Monkeys' first album was becoming the fastest selling debut in British history, he had to be content with watching his childhood friends becoming international superstars while he worked in a supermarket. Within six months, however, original bassist Andy Nicholson decided to quit the band. O'Malley got the call. "When I first started, I felt quite a bit of pressure because I’d never played to more than like 50 people at a time and we were doing some big festivals," explains O'Malley. "However, I think because I’d known them all for a long time, it wasn’t like I’d just been drafted in to play bass because I was supposed to be good at it. It was more like my mates wanted me to play with them. A lot of the pressure lifted because of that. It wasn’t like, 'if you fuck up, you're sacked!'." Since then, the Arctic Monkeys have gone on to secure their position as one of the UK's biggest musical exports, releasing three more chart-topping albums, the latest of which, this year's Suck It and See, is seen by many as a return to form after 2009's more experimental Humbug. And they're now eagerly awaiting their first Aussie tour since 2009, with tickets for their second Sydney show going on sale this morning. "Yeah, the winter campaign!" said an excited O'Malley. "Last time, when we did Big Day Out, we went down a couple of weeks before and had a bit of a holiday at Whale Beach, so we’re planning to do a similar thing but at a different place. Obviously, it’s much better than being in England in January! I’ve never been outside of Sheffield on Christmas Day before so it’ll be great, just completely different." So he's not worried about all the sharks, spiders and snakes, I ask? "Well, I know it’s highly unlikely and you’re more likely to win lottery and stuff, but I watched that Shark Week thing. You should never do that, because you just think that if you stick your little toe in a puddle somewhere you’re going to get your leg bitten off." Speaking on the phone from Pittsburgh, at the end of the band's recent US tour, O'Malley seems relaxed, funny and keen for some time at home. For example, when I ask if he was ever compared to a celebrity before becoming famous

himself, he replies, "Rik Mayall. I don’t know if you can even lie to yourself that that’s a compliment". Despite the a-list status and meteroric rise to fame, he's refreshingly grounded.

You think you'll get your leg bitten off if you stick a toe in a puddle

"It’s never seemed as crazy to us as it looks from the outside I guess," he explains. "Because we’ve all known each other so long it’s helped us keep our identity. We’ve all got the same groups of friends and all our parents are friends. I think that must help in not getting a big ego or thinking you’re amazing." So does he still feel nervous playing shows with newish material? "Definitely when it’s first come out. I feel really comfortable with it now, as we’ve done 60 or 70 gigs since the album, but definitely the first five to 10 gigs. You’re concentrating more because it’s not songs you’ve been playing for years, and when you’re concentrating when you’re playing you look like a bit of a dick!" And what about the rumours the band will take a bit of a break from recording after the current tour? "I think we’re just going to take it as it comes," he replies. "We’ve not said we’ll record an album straight away, but we’ve got no plans, we'll just see what happens naturally and not put any targets on it." However, fans impatient for album number five will be buoyed by O'Malley's final comment about what the Monkey's songwriter Alex Turner has been up to. THE KK+K HONEYMOON IS OVER

[USA]

Kim Kardashian has the credibility of a Qantas plane flown by Ryan Giggs right now. Does she really think we’ll believe anything that comes out of her mouth about her “marriage” to Kris Humphries? I think she put more thought into finding a man who spells his name with a ‘K’ than anything else. The first claim: that she did not make any money off her 72-day marriage. Ha. The second: that she married for love. I’m sorry but she lost me at the statement she released, “contemplating whether to even film my wedding was a tough decision to make”. No, no, wait, she lost me at: “This is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to write.” Her surname is about the hardest, and only thing, she has ever had to write.

USHER’S GOLDEN CAR WASH

[USA]

Usher was reminded that rich superstar RnB wankers still have to obey parking laws last week. TMZ released video footage of him being sprayed with beer by an enraged woman after he attempted to park in a disabled parking spot. What I love is that the woman didn’t just give him the bird, she actually got her hands on a can of Bud Lite, shook it up and sprayed it into the window of his SUV, grabbing his hoodie and screaming, “you don’t belong here”. She went all street on his ass and what did he retaliate with? A bottle of Evian. It just goes to show that Usher isn’t as tough as he looks. What is this saying? Beer is thicker than water? Crazy parking space lady: 1. Usher: 0.

Pussy whipped: Johnny Depp’s new film, The Rum Diaries, has bombed on its opening weekend, making just $6 million, which doesn’t even compare to the Shrek spin-off Puss in Boots 3D which made $38 million. The film based on the novel by Hunter S Thompson follows a journalist, played by Depp, who heads to Puerto Rico in the 1950s. little Justin “Billy Jean” Bieber got hit with a paternity scandal. According to a 20-year-old woman named Mariah, he is the baby daddy to her threemonth-old son. Before he could cry “but the kid is not my son”, Mariah went to The Star to sell her story and photos. She claims that she met him backstage at one of his concerts and he begged her to have sex with him, promising her tickets to all of his future concerts. She said they did the deed, which lasted “30 seconds”

and he never spoke to her again. But now his reps are saying that it’s impossible because he wouldn’t have been alone with the girl backstage. Although, given the time it takes to impregnate, she may have just brushed past him on the way to bathroom. Either way, she wants his financial support and the Biebs isn’t having a bar of it. He tweeted, “So I’m going to ignore the rumour and focus on what is real an opportunity to help by doing what I love. Judge me on the music! What’s scarier than Liz Hurley boning leather-skin man Shane Warne? Having them knock on your door dressed as Middle Eastern women, that is. Oh I’m sorry, they dressed as ninjas. Right... I know it’s Australia and we don’t go to the extremes that the northern hemisphere do, but with all their money you’d think they’d do better than this. The “ninjas” roamed the streets of Melbourne trick-ortreating in what was clearly a last minute attempt at a costume. Either that or they’re part-time cat burglars, in which case, Crime Stoppers now have an identity match. The only person with some sense was Shane’s daughter, who thought to hell with that shitty costume and dressed up as a pink princess. She kind of stood out, though.

What do Demi Moore and Benjamin Button have in common? Something... but I can’t put my finger on it. The scoop: Demi Moore was having some fun of her own with a guy who was even younger than Ashton. According to a friend of Demi’s who told In Touch magazine (surely a reliable source), Demi had an affair with one of Ashton’s friends – 27-year-old Canadian actor Ben Hollingsworth. The source said that they regularly had sex in the back of her car (I suppose Ashton had dibs on the spa) and only stopped when Ben became good friends with Ashton. So maybe the secret to Demi’s everlasting youth really is in bedding young boys. Justin Bieber look out, Demi is coming for your mapleflavoured youth juice.

THE CRASHING OF THELMA AND LOHAN

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

[USA]

Michael Lohan has a serious case of jealous parent, always trying to out-do Lindsay in the criminal offence stakes. The latest – he was arrested for contacting his ex-girlfriend, the one he beat up about a week ago, who got a restraining order out on him. But it gets better, because anything Lindsay can do, Michael can do 10 times better. By better I mean better for the cameras. He tried to escape from the police by jumping off his 3rd story balcony. As he’s not Superman, no matter how much he felt like he was at the time, he crashed hard onto some wooden chairs. The fall was 34 feet to the ground. He then tried to hide in some bushes, as you do. Whatever invincibility-inducing drug he’s on, he’s going to need a lot more of them in prison. But for now he’s resting his broken bones. No one has sent flowers.

The pictures were sent to my husband. It’s not like I was shooting a porno. Scar-Jo has a logical explanation for those leaked nude photos

King Cannons The Melbourne-based Kiwi rockers are about to hit the airwaves hard with their debut album, so we caught up with the band’s frontman Luke Yeoward INTERVIEW LEIGH LIVINGSTONE

enough to have a go at the overseas market. The England thing didn’t work out and I’m really thankful that it didn’t because now we’re in Melbourne and things are going well for us. Why didn’t it work out? To be honest it was because half of the band didn’t make it over there. Our guitarist and keyboard player both got denied their visas, after me, our bass player and drummer were all over there setting up. Everyone just threw multiple thousands of dollars down the toilet with that.

King Cannons: plenty of colour

What can fans expect from the album? There is a lot of storytelling. It’s a very honest album. A lot of rock and roll, some soul grooves. It’s a pretty heartfelt, honest sort of record. It’s still in the process of getting the finishing touches on it, so I haven’t heard the whole thing. I need to sit down with it, I’m not even sure what it’s about myself yet. We haven’t thought of a title yet. It’s all still being worked on.

You’ve a fair amount of body art going on. When did you get the first tattoo? Yes, we are all pretty colourful. I got my first one when I was 16. I’ve slowed up a bit now and don’t really give a shit about the tattoos anymore. To be honest, I almost wish I had nothing at all. You kind of reach a point where you’d really like to walk down the street and completely blend in to everybody else’s skin.

How would you describe your sound? It’s whatever we feel like at the time. At the moment it’s just rock music with a bunch of different influences tied in there, whether it be old rhythm and blues, rock and roll, or soul, and there’s little bits of Jamaican music still in there. It’s a crazy mix. Just honest rock music, with a bit of melody and stuff.

Are there any you regret? I’m married now and I’ve got my ex-girlfriend’s name tattooed on my arm. I also have “hate” on one side of my neck, which is not the best. Things like that are a little bit annoying to live with. I see all these young kids going around, getting crazy tattooing, which is awesome and funny at the same time, because it means a whole bunch of kids are going to get a whole bunch of funny stuff they are going to regret.

How was touring with The Living End? That was awesome. Really, really cool. Great band, really good guys, just fantastic crowds. We were really honoured. Meet any crazy fans? There is always some interesting people in every audience that kind of do their own crazy things, but I’m pretty boring. I just drink a cup of tea, do the show and try to hang out a little bit after the show. I try and take it easy. 26

How come you all moved to the UK? The want to get out of New Zealand pretty much. We had all been playing in bands for most of our lives, you just get sick of repeating the same process and getting the same results. Which is playing the same three venues every few weeks in the town that you live in and not getting anywhere. We had something to offer with King Cannons and we were confident

It’s good you stuck together... The thing with King Cannons is that we are all really good mates and there’s a magical kind of balance between people. From my previous experience in bands, that doesn’t come along very often and when it does you’ve got to make sure you nurture it. We’ve got six friends that are more than happy to spend time with each other and make great music together. Have you got a dream tour rider? Now we are talking way too far in advance. I haven’t given that a thought. Some wankers say things like 100 white towels or bullshit like that. Then you make some poor person run around like a mad person trying to find you some ridiculous item so you can feel comfortable for an evening. What a bunch of wankers. Food and water, that’s it. Which is the biggest party, Australia Day or Waitangi Day? People in Australia celebrate public holidays differently. There seems to be a lot more BBQ and drinking in Australia on that day than there is in New Zealand on Waitangi Day. I’ve had more fun on Australia Day in Australia over the last two years than I’ve ever had on Waitangi Day. That said though, I don’t like the celebration of Australia Day, it’s weird, but I do like a day off. I don’t think an invasion is anything to be celebrated. King Cannons play Maroochydore (Nov 10), Byron Bay (Nov 11) and Brisbane (Nov 12). kingcannons.com

SYMMETRY

WIN

Symmetry and patterns can make for great, eyecatching images. The beauty of these types of photos is they’re easy to find – symmetry is everywhere, or you can set up the shot yourself. The key is to maximise the impact. The more symmetry you have in one shot, the more prominent the effect of the outcome will be. Strong, straight and diagonal lines along the frame play a strong role. Architecture uses repeated patterns and symmetry so often that is often goes unappreciated. Before shooting, look around to see if there’s a way to bring symmetry to the shot. It doesn’t have to be a mirror image, even though this is visually pleasing. Another great technique is to break the symmetry in some way, introducing tension and a focal point to the scene.

are the best places near Q Where Sydney to escape for a day or two? Sally Fray, USA as Sydney is, sometimes you just A Great need to get out of the city. Luckily, there’s heaps of options within just a few hours. For the biggest change from the bright lights, go west to the Blue Mountains, either to Katoomba, or better yet, venture to a smaller town like Leura or Wentworth Falls. Once there, go bushwalking, try canyoning or just sit back in front of a log fire. Alternatively, head north for a boozy wine tour of the Hunter Valley. The scenery’s great, but you probably won’t notice after a few tasty chardonnays. Just an hour on the train south of Sydney is one of the area’s best kept secrets – the Royal National Park, where the beaches are plentiful and the people sparse. Another great option is to explore the Hawkesbury River. Get a group together and hire a river boat. You could even go further north to Newcastle for a different kind of weekend – beautiful beaches and a rough and ready nightlife.

Despite their name, they’re equally happy wallowing in fresh water, making most waterways up north potentially deadly places to swim. However, there are a few places where you’re guaranteed to see a few. Queensland’s Daintree River is home to some big ones. Real-life Crocodile Dundee (only funnier) Bruce Belcher has been working the river for over 20 years and knows where the biggies are. Salties are found all over Kakadu National Park, and around Cahill’s Crossing you’re bound to see a few. Just don’t get too close to the water – crocs love to ambush prey (yes, that includes you) along the water’s edge. WA’s rugged Kimberley region is another great croc hang out. You can spot them in numerous places, but your best chance is on a river cruise around the larger coastal towns such as Derby or Wyndham.

DESTINATION: HICKSVILLE

While trying to drive across the Simpson Desert, LIZZIE JOYCE and her partner were forced to hitch a ride with some dodgy truckers. My boyfriend Dan and I were attempting to cross the Simpson Desert on our way to Alice Springs from Sydney. We set off in our 4WD loaded with equipment, including 60 litres of water, a double swag and a laser beam. After 10 hours of driving, watching the landscape turn from highways and tall buildings to red earth and eternal horizons, we glided past an old mining town called Cobar, stopped for a wee and drove on through, thankful that this ‘Hicksville’ town was not our destination. But while driving at an average speed of 120km per hour, the trusty car (which I was assured had “just had a full service and was made for driving across such terrain”) was disintegrating and the entire wheel was about to fall off. Suddenly the brakes started to fail and smoke started pouring out of the front passenger tyre. We were 120km from the last town and with at least 100km to the next, Dan decided

Airlie:

we should drive on (without brakes) and see if we could make it to our destination. Luckily it didn’t last long anyway as the car stopped in defiance and we were forced to pull off the road in the middle of nowhere. Within minutes two semi-trailers ,driven in convoy by brothers, pulled up to offer us help. They weren’t exactly the knights in shining armour I had hoped for, these two ugly truckers. Freaky Brother One began to undress me with his eyes, almost frothing at the mouth at coming in such close proximity to someone of the opposite sex, while Freaky Brother Two was pretending to be a mechanic, baffling Dan with his bullshit. It was turning into Wolf Creek. Nothing could be done with the car, and we had no choice but to accept a lift from Freaky Brother One to the nearest roadhouse 13km up the road. But then he said there wouldn’t be enough room in the cab so Dan should travel with his brother and I should hop into his cab by myself. I was close to hysteria. There was no way I would be getting in that lorry by myself. So we both hopped in with Brother

Number Two. Dan settled in the middle of the very spacious cab which had enough room to house a small Albanian family! I thought it would be plain sailing from here. But after a couple of minutes, Brother Number One starts becoming agitated – he thinks he has lost his keys as he can’t use the radio to contact his brother. He pulls onto the side of the road and asks me to hop out to see if he had left them in the door lock. This forced me into ungraceful acrobatic maneuvers in order to hang myself out the door and reach round to grab the keys, with Freaky Brother One more than enjoying the view of my ass in the air. The keys were there, so off we set again in stilted silence. Finally we caught sight of the roadhouse and saw our escape was only minutes away – we made a sharp exit from the freaky brothers. The roadhouse turned out to be a petrol pump and a shop that was about to close. They had a phone though and we arranged for a tow truck to pick us up and take us back to the nearest town: Cobar (the Hicksville town we’d previously scorned) where we would have to wait for the next three days for the car to be repaired. How ironic that the town we were laughing at turned out to be our refuge.

Mush! Mush!

Both Quebec and Ontario offer countless chances to travel in a dog-drawn sleigh in the winter months. A childlike sense of wonder envelops you as you race by snow-sprinkled pine trees at a surprising pace and the pungent smells of a pack of dogs attending to business as they run only increases the juvenile giggling. Dog sledding encounters can last anything from an hour to a week and, if sitting back to enjoy the scenery seems a little tame, you can seek out the chance to try your hand at mushing a pack of dogs yourself. In Ontario, head to the Algonquin Provincial Park, midway between Toronto and Ottawa. In Quebec, combine a trip to the Ice Hotel with a dog-sledding stint or seek out an operator at one of the major ski resorts. See canada.travel

City beats Regularly touted as being Australia’s coolest city, Melbourne has an independent, live music scene not to be missed WORDS ANDREW WESTBROOK

Ever heard the one about Melbourne being Australia’s coolest city? The most European, cultured metropolis of the southern hemisphere? Me too. But I’m always suspicious of such labels. They sound a bit too much like a tag invented by a marketing team, kind of like an awesome-sounding school nickname for yourself that you casually drop into conversation, in the hope that others might start using it. So, I needed to test just how trend-settingly chilly the Victorian capital really is. Well, there ain’t much cooler than the groupie-infused, skinny jeaned world of music, so that’s where my search began...

LIVE MUSIC As day turns into night, it’s time for amps across the city to start a-buzzing, and there’s no shortage of venues to find some great live music in Melbourne. Many decent-sized visiting bands will most likely be found playing the Forum, but what this city does best is the smaller, slightly scuzzy little basements and back rooms where for just a few bucks you can get right up close to some up-and-coming acts. Most venues play such a variety of genres that it’s best to just see who’s playing where whenever you’re in town, but great places to start your hunt are the Northcote Social Club (High St, Northcote) and The Workers Club (Brunswick St, Fitzroy). A Melbourne institution well worth checking out is The Tote (Johnston St, Collingwood). Don’t believe in its status as a genuine city landmark? Well, when authorities tried to have it shut down last year, thousands of people took to the streets in protest and succeeded in keeping its doors open. Want more? Other options include The Old Bar (Johnson St, Fitzroy), Wesley Ann (High St, Northcote) and St Kilda’s iconic, if slightly tired feeling Espy (The Esplanade).

GET SERVED BY A ROCK STAR Melbourne doesn’t just boast a lot of live music, it’s got stacks of musical heritage, and there’s plenty of bands now running bars, cafés and restaurants. In many of them, the one-time rockers have even switched their mic for a glass and can actually be found behind the bar pulling the pints. One of the quirkiest spots to stop for a flat white is Handsome Steve’s House of Refreshment.

Tucked away, through an unmarked door in St Hellier’s Street in Abbotsford, you’ll find quiff-laden Steve Miller, once of 80s post-punk band The Moodists. With its time warp feel and Geelong Cats memorabilia, the House (houseofrefreshment.com) is near impossible to find but, being regularly rated one of the city’s best cafés, it’s well worth the search. As Steve himself says, “If you’ve got a good place, you don’t send out a message to get wankers coming in. Squares and yummy mummy’s downstairs, hipsters upstairs.” Next, head to Americana-styled Yellow Bird (Chapel St, Windsor), for some munch and an early beer, where you’ll most likely catch a glimpse of Clint Hyndman, who could previously be found playing drums for 11-times Aria awardwinning rockers Something for Kate. Fully fuelled, stop off for a quick jar at the Post Office (Sydney Road, Coburg), where Shan Vanderwet from alt rockers Dallas Crane will most likely be the friendly face behind the bar, before heading into the city and, where else but AC/DC Lane. There you can soak up some sticky-floored classic rock in Cherry Bar, run by one time Cosmic Psychos punk Bill Walsh. If you’re in the mood for something a little more fancy, carry on down to the bottom of AC/DC lane to 24 Moons, where DJ Simon Digby has taken time out from playing the decks alongside the likes of Armand van Helden to mix up some sublime cocktails.

RECORD STORES Many an old school music fan will swear blind that vinyl still plays a vital part in keeping the music scene alive and fresh. And if you’re a vinyl lover subscribing to that point of view, you’re in for a real treat in Melbourne. Whether you’re on the search for a lost nugget, just fancy browsing the racks of classics or simply want to hang out in places where the passion and enthusiasm for a good tune is literally beating against the walls, there’s no shortage of opportunities to take your own trip up to High Fidelity. “I would say Melbourne has the most record stores in the world per capita, except maybe for Tokyo,” says a crazyhaired and grinning Chris Gill, who runs Northside Records in Fitzroy (Gertrude Street), where many of the stores TNTDOWNUNDER.COM

are clustered. “It really is one of the biggest collecting cities. The hidden treasures you can find are huge,” he adds. Indeed Chris, who advises that “disco boogie is massive at the moment,” is so proud of the city’s record store scene that he’s actually produced a free map which shows where you can find Melbourne’s 37 second-hand stores. You can pick up a copy of the map in most record stores, otherwise head to digginmelbourne.wordpress.com for more info. One store really worth a visit is St Kilda’s Pure Pop Records (Barkly Street). Once you’re done perusing the records, head out the back to find one of the city’s coolest small bars. Turn up on a Sunday night to catch the live Brazilian jam session. Another sign that Victorian vinyl is thriving is the number of bars and cafés which play it. Many, such as Fitzroy’s Colombian café Sonido (Gertrude Street) even let you sift through their collection and stick on what you want to hear.

HEARD IT ON THE RADIO INDEPENDENT MUSIC Perhaps one of the surest signs that a city loves its music is the success of community, rather than commercial, radio, and Melbourne has one of the biggest independent stations in the world. If you’re keen to escape the endlessly-repeated chart-toppers and seek out what’s new and upcoming, tune into Three Triple R on 102.7FM. With no commitments to record companies, and funded entirely by listeners subscribing, at least 40 per cent of the music played on Three Triple R is local content.

So, does Melbourne live up to its tag? No question. Whether or not it’s down to lacking the all-year climate or attention-grabbing buildings of other Aussie cities, there’s no doubt that culturally, Melbourne is in a league of its own, with a music and street art scene more akin to European or US cities than its neighbours. So yeah, maybe Melbourne is kinda cool. But what’s it to you? ❚

As day turns into night, it’s time for amps across the city to start a-buzzing

AC/DC LANE A ROAD FOR ROCK ROYALTY Australia’s biggest and most successful band, AC/DC even have a street named after them in Melbourne. Corporation Lane, off Flinders Lane, was renamed in honour of the rockers in 2004, partly because the video to their song “It’s A Long Way To The Top” was filmed in nearby Swanston Street. Despite not being from Melbourne, Acca Dacca did live in St Kilda during the early years of their career. In case you’re unsure of the band’s status outside of Oz, how’s this for a fact? Their 1980 album Back in Black is the planet’s second highest selling album of all time (behind Michael Jackson’s Thriller), selling 49 million copies worldwide.

MELBOURNE MUSIC WEEK NOVEMBER 18-26 Back for a second year, Melbourne Music Week is billed as nine days, 170 acts, 40 locations and one city. Created as a way to celebrate and support Melbourne’s thriving independent music scene, the festival sees acts ranging from the up-and coming to the likes of Cut Copy and Midnight Juggernauts, playing shows everywhere from the established venues to more surprising spaces, like Old Melbourne Gaol. Ticket prices vary, with some events being free. See thatsmelbourne.com.au

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

NED KELLY To some, Ned Kelly and his gang were nothing more than a bunch of murderous bastards terrorising Victoria. However, to many Aussies, he’s a folk hero, a man that epitomised the true blue spirit of sticking two fingers up at the prejudiced authorities. Either way, Kelly was clearly no angel. His father was an Irish convict who died when Ned was 12, leaving his son as the family’s main breadwinner. While still a teenager he was in and out of jail, notably for sending a pair of bullock’s testicles to a woman and another time for overpowering and riding like a horse a copper who tried to arrest him. When four heavily armed policemen went looking for Kelly in 1878, three of them ended up dead. He was finally captured in 1880, despite wearing his trademark homemade armour, after a plan to derail a train full of police went wrong. After reportedly quipping “such is life”, he was hanged, but not before 32,000 Victorians signed a petition against the sentencing. Nowadays you can check out where he was executed (and gawp at his death mask) at the Old Melbourne Gaol. However real Kelly enthusiasts should head to Glenrowan, 175km north of Melbourne, which was the scene of his final bloody stand. There you’ll find a museum and, of course, the Big Ned Kelly (pictured).

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

TARONGA ZOO ZooPass (ferry ticket and zoo entrance) $50.50 at Circular Quay. The animals are as good as any top zoo, but it’s the journey there and the views as you walk around that make Taronga one of the world’s best. Make sure you arrive in style by getting the ferry over from Circular Quay and then taking the cable car over the animals to the entrance. You can even spend the night in the zoo doing Roar and Snore, at a cost of $275 each. taronga.org.au

TALL TIMBER COUNTRY Test your nerve in the middle of Tall Timber country at Walpole, where the Tree Top Walk is suspended 40 metres above the ground in the canopy of giant tingle trees. As the walkway sways gently from side to side, you get a one of a kind bird’s eye view of the region. After that, head on to Denmark and Albany, a great place for whale watching, surfing and four wheel driving.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

DARWIN The rains might be due to start any day now, but that hasn’t stopped Lonely Planet just naming the NT capital the world’s 10th best city to visit next year, gushing with praise in a way that we’ve been doing for years. Darwin is a truly tropical capital and one of Australia’s most exciting. Rough around the edges and bloody miles from anywhere it might be, but it genuinely oozes the real frontier spirit that so many other places claim to have, yet ultimately lack. Perhaps it’s due to the crocodiles, cyclones and all-round insane climate that sends the locals “troppo” about, well, this time of year, but Darwinians drink twice as much as the average Aussie (which is a fair bit to start with), so you’re unlikely to get bored. It’s also got stunning sunsets, a great waterfront and a nightlife that will leave you on your knees. If you make it there before the rains hit, get ready for the most spectacular lightning storms you’ve ever seen.

OZWORK

Nursing Nurses are in high demand across Oz, so get registering... First things first. To get a job you must be registered with the nursing board. Luckily, from July last year all of the state’s boards merged into one, meaning nurses now only have to register once to work anywhere in Australia. There are five criterion for registration. They are: Establish your identity; meet the English language proficiency criteria; meet current Australian nursing and midwifery education standards; prove you have practised as a nurse and/or midwife within a defined period of time preceding the application; and finally, demonstrate you are ‘fit to practise’ nursing and/or midwifery in Australia. Nurses are in demand around the whole country. Major cities have the biggest opportunities but there is also a demand in rural areas. Depending on experience, a registered nurses can expect to earn up to $55 per hour.

OF THE Why does Aussie chocolate WEEK taste different? We’ve witnessed one too many travellers pulling offended faces after biting into an Aussie Dairy Milk, so we just had to know. All global brands are made with the same ingredients but it’s the source and proportion of them that affects taste. Aussie choccy must contain no more than five per cent vegetable oil, but UK choccy contains a lot more. The balance is made up with milk fats, because Aussies like their chocolate really milky and creamy. Also, different cows eating different grasses make different kinds of milk. So now you know. Take a break.
