Roberto Cavalli’s daring designs are rarely out of the headlines. His distinctive style is characterised by wild prints, high slits, plunging necklines and flamboyant embellishments, combined with Florentine craftsmanship. His clothes have been spotted on numerous celebrities including Christina Aguilera, Beyoncé, Sharon Stone and Jennifer Lopez. Founded in Florence in the 1960s, the Cavalli brand is now distributed in more than 50 countries. In addition to the signature womenswear collection seen on fashion catwalks, the company now designs and produces menswear, childrenswear, underwear, eye glasses, perfume, shoes and jewellery. Roberto Cavalli was born in Florence. He comes from a relatively modest family with a strong artistic heritage – his grandfather was an impressionist painter, whose work can be seen at the Uffizi gallery. While he was a student at art school, he discovered a way to make flower prints on knitwear. In the early 1970s he patented a technique for printing on leather and moved on to make patchworks with different materials that caused a sensation in the fashion world. The business expanded rapidly in the 1990s, aided by the strategic positioning of monobrand boutiques. The label is also available at upmarket department stores worldwide. Cavalli is vivacious, hospitable and cordial. He’s known for his lavish lifestyle, owning several villas and a luxury yacht and hosting spectacular parties. He has been married for almost 30 years to Eva Duringer, a former Miss Universe contestant. She is also his business partner and has played a key role in developing the company.

Did coming from an artistic background and growing up in a town so rich in art inspire you in any way to be a designer? Of course it did. Even though we are all individuals with our individual characteristics, I believe that the environment has a huge influence in shaping our personality and tastes. I was exposed to beauty and art since I was born, both in my family and in my hometown. I come from a family of artists, my grand-dad was a macchiaioli painter – the Italian impressionist school. Florence, on the other hand, is a beautiful place. Not only is it full of art and history, but also its surroundings, where I now have my house-studio, form one of the most striking spots of countryside in the whole world. For me, growing up was all about beauty, color, craft and expression, and in fact I arrived at fashion from an artistic route. I studied at art school and initially planned to be an artist. Later on, I channeled my love for painting into prints, started experimenting with clothing and it all grew from there. So, to answer your question, growing up in Florence has been fundamental in my being a designer. To be honest, I am a very proud Florentine. Do you think that fashion design can be described as an art in the same way that painting or sculpture can? It can, of course. Art is all about beauty and I see fashion as the purest expression of beauty. I don’t care about commerce when I create, and this is why, I think, I touch a chord with my audience. They see and feel the honesty and creativity in what I do. This said, fashion must also consider a few parameters, like use and the human body, while pure art – painting and sculpture - is limitless. This is very important, otherwise clothes get too abstract and fashion looses its mission. There is nothing that I like more than seeing my dresses worn by real women not by dummies in a museum.

24

experience

How can you best describe the beginning of your fashion house? How have your first designs evolved into today’s recognized brand? It was by pure accident – a bunch of t-shirts, some leather pieces. Later on, I developed a unique method of printing onto knitted garments, something that at the time was totally unheard of. The industry went crazy for it and I immediately started working on a larger scale. It was a magic moment: the late 60s youthquake; freedom in the air; barriers that kept being broken. It was all very energetic and I felt up to the challenge of building my fashion house. I experimented with jeans and washes, and turned jeans – then a workwear garment – into an haute couture, arty item. I kept defining a lively, eccentric and sensual recipe, and it all evolved organically over the years. I think I succeeded because I managed to keep the enthusiasm and freedom of the beginnings intact along all these years. And because I truly love women and it shows in what I do! The Cavalli fashion house has successfully expanded into accessories and other fashion items. Where do you see leveraging your brand in the future? My strength, as a designer, is that I have created a lifestyle not just a style. An optimistic, lively, joyous and positive one. Thereafter, I might expand my brand in every direction. It can be furniture, or food, or entertainment. We already make vodka and I run the Cavalli clubs. For me, creativity is absolutely limitless.

How have you taken advantage of business opportunities and where is that reflected in your collection or your overall growth structure? Believe it or not, my successes are a lot less planned, in terms of business, than you can imagine. It’s all very spontaneous and direct. I don’t believe in marketing, it’s just soulless planning. I am a man of emotion and action. How has your organization benefited by being located in Italy and more broadly Europe? I rely on the best craftsmen around and the best quality of work. I don’t want to compromise on that, so this is why I keep my base here. Where do you see the trends in your industry and how will the Cavalli brand capitalize on them? Trends? What trends! I just believe in instinct. I’m one of those designers who march at their own speed, ahead of the pack. I’m an original, not a follower. How have you planned for success given the cyclical nature of the fashion industry? I understand and love women, and women love and understand my work in return – that goes way beyond any fashion cycle. How do you think Italy will be able to maintain its position as the design centre of the world in the face of cheaper copycat production from Asia? The only way Italy can survive is quality and creativity. Remember, copycats would be nothing without creators. I also think we have to invest in young talents, in order to survive.

How does using a Bombardier business jet help you and your organization better compete? Quickness is success, it’s just as simple as that. A Bombardier business jet can help me get to where I need to be very fast, saving me time and money, while making the engine of my business run smoothly. Where do you find the inspiration for your collections and your motivation for continued design innovation? Nature, women and my urge to express myself are the fuel of my work. It’s always been like that. I still feel the same energy and creative rush that I felt when I started. You’ve often courted controversy – is this something you relish? What creates the rebel in you? I have non-conformism in my DNA. It’s the 60s of my youth, you know. It’s just that I want to be myself and express my ideas of women and fashion and glamour. It’s not controversy for the sake of it. That’s pointless. Have you identified any new and upcoming talented designers that you would like to work with? Not yet, but I’m endlessly scouting, believe me. Have you achieved everything that you dreamed of in the early days, or do you still have a burning ambition that you want to realize? I’d like to be able to fly! It’s the same dream that Leonardo da Vinci had. A Bombardier business jet helps, but I’d still like to grow wings!

TV

MAXIMIZE YOUR ENTERTAINMENT EXPERIENCE. TRANSFORM YOUR LIVING ENVIRONMENT INTO A PERFECTLY TUNED SPACE, WHERE IMPRESSIONS ARE INTENSE AND IN TOTAL HARMONY WITH YOUR WISHES.

In just over 80 years we've gone from tiny, black-and-white screens that you would have to squint to see, to mind-bogglingly huge displays, capable of showing pristine high-definition pictures. Today’s TVs offer viewers a total sensory experience; watching at home can really be better than going to the movies.

BY JOHN STEWARD

THE PIONEER KURO (KRP-600A) At just 64mm thin and with a separate media receiver, the Pioneer KURO KRP-600A is a high-definition television that is clean and contemporary in design; a centrepiece complementing almost any interior. KURO means black in Japanese – and a KURO flatscreen TV is 60 inches of black tones of such depth and purity that every detail, every color, every shade becomes brilliantly alive. If you're searching for the perfect picture, this set delivers it. The vibrancy of colour and smoothness of movement you'll experience are simply fabulous – and those svelte, stylish looks won't be out of place in any viewing room.

PHILIPS AUREA For pizzazz, colour and movement, Philips offers us the Aurea II 42PFL9903. This TV boasts a clever bit of technology called Ambilight Spectra with Active Glass Frame and sensorial halo, which projects light onto the wall behind it, in keeping with the colours displayed on the screen. The Aurea has a high-quality design with a unique edge-to-edge front cut from a single piece of crystalline glass. It's also a sight to behold – the TV picture seems to spread across the whole room, drawing you right into the action. The Aurea has a Perfect Pixel HD engine that matches each pixel with its surrounding pixels for a more natural image. Spin the Blu-ray disc of Apocalypto, with its vivid blues and greens, and you won't fail to be wowed.

PANASONIC 103IN PLASMA TV For an even larger screen experience, take a look at Panasonic's monolithic TH-103PF9. The screen is a massive 103 inches and, according to some studies, the world’s largest plasma display. With a wireless presentation board and advanced multi-screen capability, it has many commercial applications – but make no mistake: this is a serious television, and it serves up a seriously good picture.

SIM2 CSX LUMIS HOST The Italian manufacturer, whose striking high-performance HD home theater projectors are known worldwide for their pristine video and dramatic cabinet designs, delivers the goods with the SIM2 CSX Lumis Host projector. This display is ideal for watching the world's best soccer teams battle it out in the upcoming 2010 World Cup – it's a 1080p full HD projector capable of throwing an image up to 25 feet diagonally. That’s larger than some full-blown movie-theater screens. Whether you're seeking a high-tech approach to watch your favourite movies in their full aspect ratio, or to show your collection of high-definition Blu-ray discs to an audience, there's a TV out there for you.

BANG & OLUFSEN BEOVISION 9 Bang & Olufsen, renowned for producing ultra-stylish, high-end audio-visual kits, has something for the modernists. The 50-inch, 1080p Full HD BeoVision 9 is a masterpiece of design. Its striking diamond-cut square frame houses advanced picture and sound engines to optimise performance for any conditions, and it’s fully expandable to accommodate set-top boxes and other B&O kits. The real star, though, is its center speaker, which pumps out a huge 2x250W – and is claimed to produce the same sound quality wherever you sit in the room. Trust B&O not to hold back on the audio.

GET MOBILE Gone are the days where you were tied to your sofa to watch TV. Now you can take shows and movies with you wherever you go. Apple's iPhone – the king of portable media – can access a galaxy of online TV content, and Archos's 5g will let you store around 40 fulllength movies on its 250GB hard drive.

Whether you're seeking a high-tech approach to watch your favorite movies in their full aspect ratio, or to show your collection of high-definition Blu-ray discs to an audience, there's a TV out there for you. experience

After admittance by the gatehouse, this peaceful world-renowned retreat presents a deceptively simple and secluded appearance, with the guest rooms well hidden from curiosity seekers. The driveway is bordered with seasonal wildflowers or the golden grasses for which California is famed. An array of solar panels provides electricity for the inn and shade for wandering wildlife; deer, turkeys, quail and the occasional bobcat. Blue heron stalk frogs in the pond while hawks and condors soar overhead. The resort’s organic architecture embraces the dramatic beauty of the Big Sur coastline. Created with bio-structure architecture using natural materials of glass, wood and stone, the design was intended so onlookers feel a part of nature, not just observers of it. Every environmental aspect was carefully considered; the earth-sheltered guesthouses capture passive heating and cooling, and the stilted tree houses protect the fragile root balls of the ancient redwood trees. Within the hotel, a number of conservation measures are in effect – solar electricity reduces the carbon footprint, an on-site plant purifies and bottles the inn’s own water, and bed linens and towels are from organically grown cotton, as is most of the clothing sold at the Post Ranch Mercantile Shop. In this world of its own, nature meets nurture with the chef’s garden providing organic herbs and edible flowers, a source for on-site culinary creations and essential oils and products exclusively blended for the Post Ranch Spa. Guests are encouraged to fill their time with whatever their heart desires. There is plenty to do, with yoga in the morning, spa treatments, nature walks, stargazing or simply relaxing – perhaps the best pastime of all at the ranch. In keeping with the retreat atmosphere, cars are parked away from the rooms and guests are transported around the property and to other destinations in Big Sur via Lexus hybrid SUVs. A luxurious amenity is the loan of high performance hard-top Lexus convertibles for tooling around the coast.

Sierra Mar Restaurant serves world-class cuisine in an awe-inspiring setting. The architecture is in service to nature, drawing the eye to the ocean through floor-toceiling glass walls which showcase the ever changing panoramic scenery and the horizon’s meeting of sea and sky. At dinner, after the sun sets, the perspective changes from the vast glory of the California coast to an intimate dining experience with sparkling reflections from wine glasses, flickering candlelight and beautifully set tables. Under the artful direction of executive chef Craig von Foerster, the innovative four-course prix fixe menu features delicacies fresh picked from the Post Ranch’s organic garden. The restaurant supports small producers and the regional economy by serving all-natural free-range beef and poultry, sustainable seafood and locally grown seasonal organic vegetables and fruit. The cuisine borrows from many cultures, fusing California fare with Asian, Mediterranean, Hawaiian and Pacific Rim influences. Each dish is distinctly its own force of nature.

Within the setting the enjoyment is enhanced, not just for the palate and nose, but in the context of the experience. Since its inception in 1992, the wine program has received a vast amount of awards and recognition for the depth and uniqueness of the cellar. Wine Director Dominique DaCruz is responsible for the overall direction and buying for the cellar. Unpretentiously passionate about wine, his philosophy is evident throughout the list: glad to be part of the new world wine industry while keeping a strong emphasis on old world wines. Selections range from wines made through sustainable methods, vertical vintages from top estates, First Growth Bordeaux, Grand Cru Burgundy and Cult Estates of California, without leaving aside eclectic artisans from all parts of the world. Excellent wines are offered from producers whose wines may not be household names but are highly sought after within the industry. The stature of the wine list provides the opportunity to offer wines with very limited availability to most of the public.

Every year the program adapts to changing world events, and 2009 was no different. Topic A, of course, was the global economy – from housing and credit markets to corporate restructuring. But there was still plenty of interest in related topics: how to reduce our dependence on oil, what we can do to reduce health-care costs and how to reform our K-12 education system. More than 500 speakers on 130 panels inspired this year’s attendees with panels that offered a wide range of topics focused on the most current circumstances. How good was it? Monday morning opened with four panels that spanned financial recovery; global health; a look at opportunities available to companies, investors and local economies from the Build America Bond Act; and an in-depth look at current business opportunities and challenges in Russia. Speakers included Mohamed El-Erian, CEO and co-CIO of PIMCO; U.S. Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA); John Lechleiter, Chairman, President and CEO of Eli Lilly; and Steve Forbes, Chairman and CEO of Forbes Inc.

Of course, as most attendees will tell you, nothing compares to actually being there, having the opportunity to network with such an influential audience. The conference brings together a unique crowd of top global leaders who are willing to engage in discussions, not just provide canned pitches. It’s a gathering of independent thinkers who are not only aware of the significant changes that are taking place in the world today, but who want to be a part of solutions that – true to the mission of the Milken Institute – build a future of broadly shared global prosperity.

And that was just for starters. The next time slot gave attendees eight sessions to choose from, including a panel of three sitting governors (Arnold Schwarzenegger of California, Ed Rendell of Pennsylvania and Jon Huntsman of Utah) addressing the economic situation in their states, Sam Zell speaking on commercial real estate, and Duke University basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski and USC football coach Pete Carroll discussing leadership strategies.

The Global Conference is the largest gathering of the capital markets in North America – perhaps the world. Its attendees represent public companies with a market cap of more than $2 trillion. More than half of the attendees are chairmen, presidents, CEOs, directors, partners, vice presidents or CIOs – in fact, it’s estimated that the crowd contains representatives from organizations with at least $11 trillion in assets under management.

And just to make sure no one missed anything, this year, for the first time, the Milken Institute posted videos from the 2009 Global Conference sessions on its website – www.milkeninstitute.org – which proved a big hit as tens of thousands of viewers from around the world went online to get a small flavor of the event.

More than one-third of the attendees come from the finance community, mostly asset managers, from venture-capital firms and banks. There is also a significant number of attendees from large pools of public and private funds with assets of almost $4 trillion. More than one-quarter come from the business community, mostly from the fields of real estate, technology, health-care and entertainment.

Walking through the hallways, bumping elbows with Steve Wynn, Deepak Chopra or Rupert Murdoch, it’s easy to get caught up in the glamour, but this is truly a working conference. Sessions start as early at 6:30 a.m. and late-night sessions, which tend to be lighter fare to let everyone’s overworked brain relax a bit, can go on until 10 p.m. Every nook and cranny of the hotel is brimming with networking, deal-making and engaging conversation. Larry Brilliant – an advisor to Google, President of the Skoll Urgent Threats Fund, and a speaker on several panels—put it this way: “I can hardly go 10 feet through the audience without meeting somebody very interesting, who has something really important to say. So I’m finding it an intellectual feast and I’m very glad that I came.” The Global Conference is the Milken Institute’s largest event of the year, meant to raise money for its ongoing research, build new partnerships and ignite new ideas for improving living standards around the world by creating a more democratic and efficient global economy. TOP// "THEY DON'T CARE IF YOU'RE RED OR BLUE; THEY JUST WANT YOU TO GET IT DONE," SAYS GOV. JON HUNTSMAN JR. OF HIS UTAH CONSTITUENTS. WITH HIM ARE CALIFORNIA GOV. Despite the tremendous challenges faced by most of the attendees in the past year, a strong sense of optimism pervaded the 2009 Global Conference. There was a sense that the economy had finally turned a pivotal corner. In fact, because of the need for good information and new ideas, this year’s event proved more valuable than ever. Whether they were financiers and CEOs or Nobel laureates and leading philanthropists, the 2009 Global Conference attendees found a renewed sense of hope that there are, indeed, many innovative new ideas out there that can have a tangible impact on people’s lives. “The Milken Institute does intellectually what the old trade fairs in Medieval Europe did hundreds of years ago – bring together people who not only do business, but who come up with and discuss ideas,” said Steve Forbes. “The Milken Institute is a fantastic global asset – and at a time like this when brains need to be stimulated.” The 2010 Global Conference will take place April 26-28 at The Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. INTRODUCING

THE GLOBAL

SHOWER Already known worldwide as the leading-edge design business jet, Bombardier’s Global Express XRS ultra-long range aircraft now offers its passengers another first-in-class: a deluxe stand-up shower to complement its luxurious cabin.

What’s more, the Global aircraft’s shower is fully integrated in the appointed aft lavatory space, therefore it won’t affect the overall cabin volume or size of the baggage compartment. The wet/dry zone design means no lost space. An ingenious dual configuration divides the “open space” in the lavatory into two zones: wet and dry. When in dry-configuration, the shower’s aft door slides open, and the rear baggage compartment is easily accessed. Removable carpeting on the shower floor protects that area as baggage is moved in and out. The Global Express XRS is the productivity tool of choice for long distance travelers who need to get to their destination and hit the ground running. The jet’s stately cabin is a 13-hour plus environment where high-tech business tools and ultimate comfort fuse to provide maximum in-flight productivity. With the new stand-up shower option passengers are assured to land ready for their next engagement, be it the executive boardroom, a meeting with customers or a high profile event. Designed with input from current Global Express owners, the Global shower features superior design details one typically expects only at home. The Global Shower is more than simply refreshing. Every function is user-controlled through a softly illuminated wood-paneled console within the shower, which also allows passengers to monitor their shower length and water supply levels last for up to 40 minutes of shower time. The 74-in (188-cm) tall shower is encased in lexan, which allows the natural light from the lavatory windows to filter through, creating an unmatched expansive feeling. Additionally, wash lighting in the shower floor and control console infuses the lavatory with a relaxed ambiance. Features such as the recessed rain showerhead, which offers three water flow rate settings, were carefully selected to ensure the best shower experience at all altitudes in this amazingly steam-free environment which can also include an optional heated dry towel compartment. The first Global Shower is scheduled for delivery on a Global Express XRS aircraft in 2011.

ENDS OF THE

EARTH BOMBARDIER CHALLENGER BUSINESS JETS CHOSEN FOR DEMANDING SOUTH POLE MISSION When it was time to inspect the navigational aids (Navaids) at the National Science Foundation’s McMurdo Station located near the South Pole, as well as other South Pole airfields, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) chose their Challenger 601 and Challenger 604 aircraft to peform flight certification of the navigational aids. Life at the bottom of the earth is hazardous and it is a necessity that the scientists and researchers located there have their supplies delivered. Toward that aim, the FAA regularly inspects the Navaids at three antarctica locations: Pegasus Airfield, Williams Airfield at the McMurdo Station and the South Pole Station Airfield. Usually, inspection teams use American military transport planes, C-130s, to transport the necessary gear and crew and to conduct yearly inspections of the equipment used to help pilots land in inclement weather and under poor visibility. MISSION PILOTS BRETT VANMETER (LEFT) AND BILL GEISER.

50

experience

THE CREW STAYED AT MCMURDO FOR A WEEK, WHICH REQUIRED THAT THE AIRCRAFT REMAIN WARM, DRY, ICE-FREE AND READY FOR TAKE-OFF AT ANY MOMENT. IT WAS QUITE A FEAT CONSIDERING THAT THE MAINTENANCE CREW HAD TO OPERATE IN THE AVERAGE SUMMER TEMPERATURE OF AROUND -20˚C. The decision to use a business aircraft was two fold – first, the cost savings in using a business jet instead of a military aircraft and – second, freeing resources, thereby enabling the military aircraft to be used for its primary mission of supplying the South Pole. It took two years of research and planning for project lead, Master Sgt. Kirk Babcock to establish this mission. Initially, it involved a test run with the Challenger 604 aircraft in November 2007, which enabled him to prepare the pilots and crew and determine the functionality of the equipment under the harsh Antarctic conditions. Once the feasibility flight was determined successful, the primary mission was conceived. The Antarctic summer begins in late October / early November, providing a small window of opportunity for this type of operation. In November 2008, the Challenger 601 business jet successfully completed its mission to certify the new instrument approach proceedure to the South Pole.

The FAA has a long history of flight inspection, from as early as 1924, with various aircraft in its fleet to help with this task including Learjet 60 and Challenger 600 Series business aircraft. In 1991 the FAA incorporated the US Air Force flight inspection mission into its mandate and in so doing established an International Flight Inspection Office in Oklahoma City to oversee worldwide FAA flight inspection missions. Today, the FAA performs thousands of navigational aids and instrument procedures inspections worldwide. For the many scientific expeditions and science centers located at the South Pole, the FAA must inspect the navigational aids for the three landing zones. Despite the harsh environment, the engineering and maintenance requirements and the immense logistical detail involved, the Challenger business aircraft’s robust design and safety systems clearly responded well to the task of operating at the ends of the earth.

This Relais & Châteaux resort offers world class eco-adventures, kayaking, white-water rafting, grizzly bear viewings, cultural visits of the Phillips River Estuary, glacier helicopter tours, ocean fishing, fly-fishing, a spa and wellness centre, and cooking classes. Just a short (but very scenic) 50-minute private helicopter ride from Vancouver, British Columbia, you’ll comfortably hover above the Pacific Ocean, along the famous Inside Passage. With a view of the snow-capped mountains in the distance, your breath will be taken away with your first glimpse of this fabulous resort. Nestled away in an otherwise road-less paradise, Sonora offers adventures in a part of the world that very few ever have the opportunity to experience. Partnering with the local Homalco First Nation, Sonora offers guided grizzly bear viewings on the Orford River. The voyage to the bears begins with a 30-minute eco tour aboard a Polaris vessel, passing trough the Yuculta rapids and stopping to see the Steller sea lions on Jimmy Judd Island. The underwater hydrophones give you the opportunity to enjoy the sounds of killer whales and other marine wildlife. Upon arriving at the old village site, a knowledgeable Homolco First Nation guide escorts you on a tour through a lush rain forest. Suddenly, the open river bed appears before you. Although there are many viewing towers, we provide you with the opportunity to quietly wait right down on the bank of the river and before long the focused, elusive grizzlies appear before you, sometimes just meters away. For only a few months a year these magnificent animals visit the Orford River to feed on salmon before returning to hibernation.

experience

55

To really get away from it all, Sonora’s helicopter will whisk you to the top of a local glacier. With a never ending view of white, untouched snow and bright blue glacier lakes, you are literally on top of the world. This day wouldn’t be complete without a tour of the area, where you can see a family of white Billy goats gracefully balance on what seem like inch-thick shelves on the side of a steep, icy, glacier mountain. If you’re lucky, your pilot may help you spot the wolverines but you better have a quick eye, since before you know it these smart creatures will burrow themselves into a snow cave and disappear. Landing on a local rocky river bed and suiting up in fishing waders, you will then bask in fly-fishing country. These rarely fished secluded streams are teaming with salmon and your guide will be sure to give you the pointers you need to hook your very own. The Resort’s Tyee Restaurant offers 5-star cuisine by Executive Chef Matthew Stowe. Chef Stowe prepares avant-garde cuisine with a focus on local products, modern techniques and the traditional systems of the kitchens of France. Every night the Chef devises tasting menus, paired with fine wines from British Columbia and the major wine regions of the world. Menu highlights include Pemberton beef cooked sous vide, and butter poached lobster with black truffles. The sea air and spectacular sunsets add to an unforgettable dining experience. 56

Sonora’s Island Currents Spa was inspired by the nearby Arran rapids, identified as one of the fastest moving tidal currents on the coast of British Columbia. Island Currents also offers a local, natural spin on luxury. The spa features a therapeutic circuit, taking advantage of the resort’s outdoor warm and cool mineral pools, and indoor hydrotherapy tub. Signature spa treatments such as sea salt and kelp body scrub complement your private treatment room’s view of the Pacific Ocean. With a state-of-the-art conference centre and a traditional cedar built longhouse, Sonora is a unique and exciting destination for business retreats. The resort is able to accommodate groups of 10 to 150, and provides team building activities such as cooking classes and fishing tournaments. The business centre offers the full amenities and conveniences of your own corporate office but in a much more inspiring atmosphere. Simply put, there is no place like Sonora for meeting planning, incentive travel or executive retreats. The resort attracts international travelers from as far away as Germany, England and Japan, as well many locals from the mainland also take pleasure in visiting Sonora Resort for a quick, relaxing getaway.

MOSCO

MU DASHA ZHUKOVA IS BRINGING CONTEMPORARY ART TO THE PEOPLE OF MOSCOW, AND THE PEOPLE OF MOSCOW TO CONTEMPORARY ART.

A city has a way of living up to our collective expectations. Think Moscow, and for many it’s images of the Kremlin, red coats and fine vodka that first come to mind. Think Moscow and contemporary art, and you’re likely to draw a blank. The rich collections in Moscow’s art museums mostly feature works pre-dating the 20th century. And until very recently, Moscow’s contemporary art scene was accused of being some 50-years behind the times. A stimulus package was in high order.

Enter Dasha Zhukova. The Russian-born, American-raised socialite and art-passionista has been likened to nobleman Sergei Diaghilev. Ballet Russe founder and patron of the arts, at the turn of the 20th century, he inspired Russian artists of every stripe, stimulating a creative tsunami across Moscow. Some hundred years later, Zhukova is instigating a Moscow-art-scene-renaissance, by way of the non-profit Garage Center For Contemporary Culture (GCCC).

What Zhukova adds to the mix – and why she has the art-world by the ear – is the boldness and savoir-faire of her Y-Generation.

58

experience

OW’S

USE experience

59

A GREAT START: SOME 300 “WHO’S WHO” MEMBERS OF THE ART WORLD AND HIGH SOCIETY FLOCKED TO THE GCCC’S SOFT OPENING LAST YEAR. THE SPACE WAS LEFT BARE SAVE FOR A CHANDELIER-LIKE INSTALLATION BY ARTIST RAFAEL LOZANO-HEMMER THAT ILLUMINATED THE ROOM AND AN OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY AMY WINEHOUSE.

60

experience

Dasha thought Moscow should have a large space like the GCCC for contemporary art. There is a huge thirst for knowledge among the younger generation, but most of them learn about it by surfing the Internet. She herself acknowledges being an art enthusiast more than an expert. Zhukova didn’t study art history but likes imagery and has a keen interest in art. That admission in and of itself no doubt invites Russian youth, who might otherwise be intimidated, to visit the space. Zhukova was inspired to found the GCCC when she happened upon the building that now houses the center. An architectural landmark near the Olympic Stadium on Moscow’s northern side, today’s GCCC was formerly the Bakhemetevsky Bus Garage. From the outside, the red-brick Constructivist-era landmark appears nothing out of the ordinary. Walk through the doors and you enter into a new world. Such was Zhukova’s feeling when she first chanced upon the space, a vast parallelogram spanning nearly 92,000 square feet (8,500 sq m), with an uncommon array of vertical and circular windows. Designed by leading Russian architects and engineers of the day (Konstantin Melnikov and Vladimir Shukhov respectively), the building is much loved by architects. Completed in 1927, it is among the early examples of avant-garde architectural methods as applied to industrial facilities. Its unorthodox floor plan later influenced many industrial designers. London-based architect Jamie Fobert redesigned and renovated the space, which now includes a theater, lecture hall, café, bookshop and education center.

Contemporary artists want to work outside the confines of gallery-sized walls, and the conversion of abandoned warehouses into contemporary art spaces is a natural fit. Old factories with expansive floor space and high ceilings are ripe for recycling into artistic showrooms. With the right space readied, an experienced staff hired, and the leverage of Zhukova’s powerful social networks, the GCCC is now bringing contemporary art to the people of Moscow, and the people of Moscow to contemporary art. Renowned collectors such as French luxury goods entrepreneur François Pinault have exhibited their collections here. And in true modern style, the GCCC has also brought art into the Soviet streets. One project, Moscow on the Move, featured large-screen videoinstallations topping the buildings adjacent to the Kremlin. They showcased work by leading Russian and international artists, among others Artavazd Peleshan, Doug Aitken, Fischli & Weiss, Douglas Gordon, Alexander Kluge, Sarah Morris, and Pipilotti Rist. With her continued frequenting of the world’s A-List art events the world over, Zhukova’s own collection grows quietly at her Moscow home. Her artistic imprint on this city is only likely in its infancy. Like Sergei Diaghilev before her, she’s awoken Moscow’s collective expectations to a new artistic sensibility.

The ultimately goal was to create a place where artists would want to show their work.

Bilbao effect BY KATIE EACHUS

ICONIC BUILDINGS IN SPAIN HAVE TAKEN THE WORLD BY STORM IN THE PAST TWO DECADES, SPARKED BY THE PICASSO OF MODERN ARCHITECTURE, FRANK GEHRY. EXPERIENCE MAGAZINE HIGHLIGHTS ITS PICKS FOR GEHRY’S MOST BRILLIANT AND AUDACIOUS DESIGNS Beautiful buildings have long attracted visitors to Spain – from the Moorish Alhambra palace in Granada to Gaudi’s surrealist Sagrada Familia church in Barcelona. In recent years, a new generation of contemporary buildings has grabbed the world’s attention and added yet another layer of interest to this fascinating country. The man who kick-started the revolution is Frank Gehry. His 1997 Guggenheim museum building in Bilbao challenged everyone’s perceptions about design and arguably did as much for Bilbao as Jørn Ortsen’s Opera House did for Sydney. It transformed an industrial port town into a tourist destination, and led to the regeneration of the city. It also prompted other cities to bring in big-name architects to transform their centers with an emblematic building, a trend referred to as “the Bilbao effect”.

The Guggenheim design began a new trend of bold, modern buildings sprouting all over Spain, including Jean Nouvel’s geyser-shaped Torre Agbar in Barcelona (2005), Santiago Calatrava’s water-inspired Arts and Sciences centre in Valencia (2006) and Sir Richard Rogers’ vividly-coloured Barajas airport in Madrid (2006). Gehry has since designed a host of other buildings throughout the world, including the Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles.

WORK. THE STORY GOES THAT, AS A YOUNG BOY, FRIDAY, AND KEEP IT IN THE BATH OVERNIGHT FASCINATION WITH FISH AS AN ARCHITECTURAL

Born in 1929, Gehry started designing buildings as a child, playing with building blocks with his grandmother on the floor of their Toronto home. At 11 years old he was told by a handwriting expert that he would grow up to be a famous architect. When he was 16, he was inspired by a lecture by architect Alvar Aalto and decided that the handwriting expert had been right about his career path. He has always loved to experiment with materials – in the 1960s he designed furniture from corrugated cardboard, and in 1978 his design for his own home in Santa Monica, California, involved chain-link and corrugated metal. However, it wasn’t until his spectacular design for the Guggenheim in Bilbao that Frank Gehry became a household name – at the age of 68. The Guggenheim’s architectural flamboyance and huge, curving, gleaming sheets of titanium immediately caught the world’s imagination. The 24,000 m2 (258,334ft2) building, which houses a changing collection of modern art exhibitions, pushed the boundaries of modern architecture with its mathematical complexity. The museum attracts millions of visitors from all over the world, many of whom come to see the building itself as much as what’s inside. Frank Gehry’s designs constantly challenge people’s perceptions of what is attainable. His buildings are both powerful and playful. Gehry also pays great attention to context, so although his buildings stand out, they have a relationship with their surroundings. “When people take pictures of buildings out of context, they look weird,” he says. “They make a lot more sense when seen in that space.” Appropriate to its riverside location, the billowing design of the Guggenheim evokes the image of a ship gliding majestically into dock. Light reflected on the building’s titanium finish also calls to mind a fish’s scales, in keeping with the city’s long fishing tradition. At a time when post-modernists were reacting to the straight lines of the Modern movement and encouraging architects to look back to their classical roots, Gehry decided to look back even further. “If you’re going to go back to the beginning, why not go back past the beginning to prehistoric times?” he says. He also wanted to put enjoyment back into architecture. He was struck by the advice of the Roman architect Vitruvius, who said that architecture should be based on three qualities: strength, usefulness and delight. While the first two weren’t that difficult to achieve, he found the third was the tricky one. Although he admired Modernist architecture, he wanted to add something extra. “But because I was a paid-up Modernist, I didn’t want to do this with decoration. It had to be with essential form.”

STEEL ARCH AT PORT OLYMPIC, BARCELONA. ©

His Fish sculpture in Barcelona illustrates this perfectly. The 3.5m x 54m (11.5ft x 177ft) steel lattice structure was designed in 1992 to mark the Olympics and has become a landmark of the city. Copper coloured light dances off its scales onto the ground, creating a sense of movement. The Fish is located at the base of the Hotel Arts, owned by Ritz Carlton and designed by Bruce Graham. The luxurious 44-storey hotel is housed in an elegant steel and glass tower. It’s the tallest building in Spain at 154m (505ft) high, and is a prominent feature of the Barcelona skyline. The views from the rooms are breathtaking, especially from the spa at the top. It occupies a spectacular beachfront location in the Olympic port area, near many of Barcelona’s finest shops and restaurants, and is only a ten-minute metro ride from the town centre. It’s a great place to stay for anyone wanting to explore the city’s architecture. Another building that is essential viewing for Gehry fans is the abstract Marques de Riscal hotel in La Rioja, south of Bilbao, designed in 2006. Rising out of ancient vineyards in the traditional Basque region, its sculpted metallic roof in shimmering colours is simply extraordinary. Despite its brilliant audacity, this building makes perfect sense in context. The curved sheets of titanium which appear to float above hotel like twisting grapevines are coloured red, silver and gold to mirror the shades of grapevines as they mature. Built on the site of a 150 year old winery, and aimed at designconscious and gastronomic guests, the hotel has been described as “a temple to wine”. The Marques de Riscal commissioned the building to give visitors to his winery a unique experience. There are 43 guest rooms, a winetasting room and a spa which even offers a “wine therapy massage”, using products made from grape extract. From the terraces, guests can enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding Medieval town of Elciego, the vineyards and the mountains beyond. At 80, Frank Gehry has achieved more than most architects would dream. He says he never set out to create a landmark building. His advice to young architects is simply to “take what comes your way and do your best with it.” It certainly worked for him. 68

Mioffers ssio n Hi l s a wide range of facilities for golfing enthusiasts and non-golfers alike. The courses reflect the style, skills and design philosophies of each player, and, like nowhere else in the world, offer golfers of all levels unique and diverse challenges to hone their game or match themselves with the world’s best. Among the 216 holes, 36 are equipped with floodlights, which allow golfers to play until 2 o’clock in the morning. Mission Hills offers a wide range of facilities for golfing enthusiasts and non-golfers alike. The resort’s Country Club hosted the Centennial Davis Cup in 1999 and features a tennis academy with 51 floodlit tennis courts. Three golf academies, including schools from world renowned instructors David Leadbetter and Cindy Reid complement the courses. This award-winning 5-star resort features three of Asia’s best spa facilities and luxurious residential developments that have earned international recognition for their environmental and quality standards. Awarded the “Golf Resort of the Year” by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators in 2005, Mission Hill is building upon its success. Domestically, it is listed as one of the Top Ten Sights in Shenzhen and is a nationally recognized AAAA-rated tourism resort. Since its establishment 15 years ago, Mission Hills has hosted over 100 international events. Today, it is the undisputed leader in China’s golf industry and is best known for its pioneering role in developing the game in China and bringing some of the world biggest tournaments and players to the country. THE MISSION HILLS EXPERIENCE With the completion of the Jack Nicklaus course in 1994, China had its first PGA-accredited course and was ready to host events of a global stature. A year later, Mission Hills became the venue for China’s first televised golf tournament by hosting the 1995 World Cup of Golf. The event brought some of the biggest names in golf to China and is credited with helping to bring golf to a wider audience. 72

experience

Mission Hills is also interested in growing the sport at the grassroots level. It’s the home of the Faldo Series Asia Grand Final, the Mission Hills Jack Nicklaus Junior Championship and many other initiatives. The club hosted the Mission Hills Tiger Woods China Challenge in 2001. This was Tiger’s first trip to China. He played the Nicklaus course and was pitted against three top Chinese professionals. A perfect match-up by bringing the world’s biggest golf icon to a Chinese audience and showing that China had its own rising stars. The event was a huge media success and helped inspire the Chinese people. It can perhaps be correlated with the significant increase in the popularity of the game within the Chinese population. In 2006, Mission Hills and the Asia Pacific Golf Confederation jointly developed the annual Mission Hills Asia-Pacific Open Amateur Championship, the first Asian amateur tournament to offer exemptions to major professional tournaments, and a precursor to the Asian Amateur Championship which will see its inaugural edition at Mission Hills in October 2009. The winner will be awarded a spot in the 2010 Masters Tournament, arguably the sport’s most-revered championship. The Asian Amateur Championship joins the United States Amateur, British Amateur, United States Amateur Public Links and United States Mid-Amateur as the only amateur tournaments in the world granting exemptions to vie for the coveted Green Jacket. Arguably the most important development for China’s golf industry in recent years occurred when Mission Hills secured the World Cup of Golf for an unprecedented 12 editions. With its rich tradition, unique team format, the event promotes golf’s long heritage and international

goodwill, building on the momentum created by the Beijing Olympics in cementing China’s reputation as a host nation of global events. The 55th edition of the 2009 Omega Mission Hills World Cup from November 26–29 will be held on Mission Hills’ Olazabal Course. AN ANNUAL TRADITION The Mission Hills Golf-a-thon is an annual tradition and a wonderful opportunity to experience all that this remarkable resort has to offer. Thousands of avid golfers from around the world vie to record the best score for 180 holes across 10 of the club’s 12 different courses. The competition is open to young and old, novice or single handicappers. Besides being able to claim participation or victory in the foremost test of golf endurance, there are great prizes to be won and unforgettable experiences to be shared with family, friends and fellow golfers. This year’s overall Champion will earn an exemption to October’s inaugural Asian Amateur Championship. Mission Hills is an international golf community combining the love of the game with relaxation, recreation, business facilities and real estate ventures. Your love of the game will draw you to the world’s premier golf resort and its various offerings will make you stay. For more information: www.missionhillsgroup.com

THE VANCOUVER 2010

OLYMPIC TORCH THE LONG WHITE AND CHROME TORCH REFLECTS THE UNDULATING BEAUTY OF THE CANADIAN WINTER LANDSCAPE AND THE CARVED LINES LEFT BEHIND IN THE SNOW AND ICE BY THOSE WHO ENJOY IT. Creating the 2010 Olympic Torch was the opportunity of a lifetime for a team of engineers and designers from Bombardier Aerospace and Bombardier Transportation. Working in collaboration with the Vancouver 2010 Organizing Committee, their mission was to create an iconic symbol that represents Canada and its people – a torch that will allow the Olympic flame to burn brightly through snow, rain, sleet, hail, sun, wind and subzero temperatures as it travels across the vast regions of Canada. From an idea on a sketch pad, to wooden model, to prototype and finally to reality, the 2010 Olympic Torch came together through the inspiration of the smooth, fluid lines left in snow and ice after playing winter sports. It measures 94.5 cm and weighs 1.6 kg. It can operate in extreme temperatures from -20°C to +40°C with a fuel blend of propane, iso-butane and hydrocarbons. The torch is made from a white composite finish, stainless steel burner and an aluminum core The Olympic Torch Relay has a rich history that is deeply rooted in the ceremonies that were once a part of the ancient Olympic Games. For the ancient Greeks, fire had divine connotations, and during the first Games, in honor of Zeus, additional fires were lit at his temple and that of his wife, Hera. The torch relays of modern times always begin at the site where the temple of Hera used to stand with an ancient ritual where, using the light of the Sun and a parabolic mirror, the Olympic Flame is lit and begins its journey from Olympia, Greece to the host country. The Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay will be the longest single-country relay in Olympic history. The 45,000 km voyage will see the flame transported by land, air, and water and will link over 1,000 communities across Canada’s beautiful scenic backdrop.
