I’d like to welcome you to a wonderful season at Tobacco Factory Theatres.

101 Dalmatians (P06), in rehearsal now, has a stunning cast and creative team and is looking set to be one of our most spectacular Christmas shows ever. I’m also thrilled that we will be co-producing with Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory for the first time. Exciting director Polina Kalinina is only the second guest director ever for this company and will bring freshness and vigour to Romeo and Juliet (P16) and its excellent that Andrew Hilton is tackling another nonShakespeare, Sheridan’s The School for Scandal (P24), after the triumph of last year’s Arcadia. We have three other shows at Christmas featuring some of Bristol’s favourite performers and companies: Kate McNab and the Ministry of Entertainment bring us another Mrs Gerrish instalment (P09), Peter Clifford bamboozles us with his Magical Mythologies (P09) and Pickled Image will keep younger children enthralled with Santa’s Little Trolls (P08). We have our strongest season ever in the Brewery Theatre in the New Year with sensational shows Fleabag (P10) and Fat Man (P23) coming from triumphant London runs, a welcome return for our production of Infinite Lives (P23) prior to a national tour, exciting emerging companies Flintlock (P15) and Bucket Club (P27) and the world première of a new Philip Ridley (P20). All this plus lush music, excellent children’s shows and fantastic comedy (plus our lovely new Factory Theatre Café during the daytime). I hope we see you down here soon.

MMM HMMM VERITY STANDEN IN ASSOCIATION WITH TOBACCO FACTORY THEATRES

Composed and directed by Verity Standen In collaboration with performers Ellie Showering and Dominie Hooper Choreography by Dan Canham Additional creative input from Emma Williams and Ira Brand Produced by Tom Spencer

Mmm Hmmm is a playful, poignant musical journey shaped by three exceptional female voices jumping between sound worlds and lyrical styles. Using intricate vocal techniques and rich harmony, Mmm Hmmm holds a magnifying glass up to snapshots of everyday life. One moment a fragile apology, the next a perilous trip to the First Great Western buffet car; Verity Standen’s original a cappella songs evoke the awkward, heart-breaking and hilarious moments that characterise what it means to be human. Verity Standen’s compositions for Living Structures, Bristol Old Vic and Tobacco Factory Theatres (amongst others) have been widely enjoyed in the UK and Europe, including her immersive choral piece Hug, which surprised and enchanted Bristol audiences during its sell-out run in 2013. Now she brings her own original work to Tobacco Factory Theatres after a high-profile run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Mmm Hmmm undertook original development here as part of Prototype, so we’re delighted to have it back. “Mmm Hmmm blends a cappella music, theatre and movement to create something brand new and utterly thrilling.”  Broadway Baby “Standen’s surprising, ingenious compositions force us to hear the human voice in ways not previously imagined.”  Exeunt Running time approx. 1hr Age recommendation For all ages ANNA GIRVAN, Juncture Theatre

Verity’s seminal production is beautifully honest, humorous and human. I defy anyone not to be moved by this show.

DALTON TRUMBO METAL RABBIT

Adapted for the stage by Bradley Rand Smith

A stunning, intense testament to the power of the human spirit in the most terrible of circumstances. Nothing is bigger than life. Nothing. When the call came, idealistic Joe Bonham eagerly volunteered for the trenches of World War One. But as he wakes in a strange world and attempts to piece together the fragments of his past, he realises he has paid a price he never expected. Metal Rabbit brings this scorching adaptation of Dalton Trumbo’s award-winning novel to stage in the form of Bradley Rand Smith’s Obie-winning adaptation, starring Kaffe Keating and directed by Evening Standard Outstanding Newcomer Nominee and Fringe First winner David Mercatali (Dark Vanilla Jungle, Tender Napalm). A stunning performance about one young man’s fight for life, the extraordinary strength of the human spirit, and the sacrifices the military asks of those who serve it. Nominated for four Off West End Nominations, Johnny Got His Gun has astounded audiences and critics alike. “A stunning tour de force”  The Independent “An entirely gripping account”  WhatsOnStage “I was uplifted and grateful for the experience”  Everything Theatre Running time 1hr 15mins Age recommendation 12+

101 DALMATIANS TOBACCO FACTORY THEATRES AND TRAVELLING LIGHT

Some dogs look like their owners, or is it that some owners look like their dogs? And who really owns who – do dogs secretly think that we’re their pets? Mr and Mrs Dearly love dogs, especially their two dalmatians, Pongo and Perdita. Cruella De Vil loves fur and doesn’t have much time for anything living. When Pongo and Perdita’s fifteen new-born dalmatian puppies go missing it doesn’t take a genius to work out who has kidnapped them – and now the clock is ticking before they’re gone forever. Based on Dodie Smith’s much loved book The Hundred and One Dalmatians, this is the latest collaboration between Tobacco Factory Theatres and Travelling Light especially for Bristol audiences at Christmas. 101 Dalmatians will be warm-hearted and playful, told with creative storytelling, original live music by Benji Bower and a lot of laughs. Join the inventive and nationally renowned director Sally Cookson and the team that brought you the Olivier Award-nominated and Off West End Award-winner Cinderella: A Fairytale, plus Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves and The Ugly Duckling, as they take you on a canine caper to find the missing dalmatians and deal with the dastardly De Vil once and for all! “A funny, heart-warming, beautiful piece of stage craft”  The Independent on Cinderella: A Fairytale “A terrific family night out that will have everyone leaving the theatre with a spring in their step”  The Guardian on Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves Age recommendation 6+ Running time approx. 2hrs (inc. interval)

SANTA’S LITTLE TROLLS PICKLED IMAGE

Directed by John Nicholson Performed by Dik Downey, Nikki Warwick and Vicky Andrews Written by Adam Fuller Puppets by Pickled Image

A magical extravaganza from Pickled Image, especially for the festive season. Jeremy really, really loves Christmas. All he wants is for each Christmas to be perfect; mince pies, stockings, mistletoe and especially, (and this is the icing on the Christmas cake)…lots and lots of SNOW! But, who exactly brings the snow? Santa? Rudolph? Jack Frost? No, it’s the one job left in the heavy hands of the Trolls of Winter. However, the trolls are fed up with never getting any of the credit. It’s always those cheery, little elves and that red nosed reindeer celebrated at Christmas, while the hard working trolls miss out. Not once have they been on an advent calendar or featured in a carol, so this year, unless they get their ugly mugs on at least one Christmas card, there will be NO SNOW! With silliness, laughter, stunning puppets (and maybe a humbug or two), Pickled Image (Fireside Tales with Granddad and Wolf Tales) present a magical Christmas extravaganza – Santa’s Little Trolls. “A delightful show for the whole family.” Isobel Smith on Travels with Granddad “a smattering of killer lines for all ages and one fine comic creation” Venue on Wolf Tales Running time approx. 45mins Age recommendation 2 – 6 year olds and their families MEGAN FARROW, Farrows Creative

By popular demand, Mrs Gerrish is back to spend Christmas with us! The waspish ‘50s seaside landlady may have bitten off more than she can chew this time though. Maybe the slapdash Barry can keep up but will he be eaten alive by the ferocious Mrs Gerrish Snr? Perhaps Mrs Gimlet could peel a few sprouts... FLEABAG

DRYWRITE AND SOHO THEATRE Written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge Directed by Vicky Jones Starring Maddie Rice

DryWrite and Soho Theatre present the multi award-winning and Oliviernominated one woman show Fleabag – winner of an Off West End Award and Critics’ Circle Award. Today I am going to be a new person. No more slutty pizzas. No more porny wanks. Lots more lovely threesomes. GO. Welcome to the world of Fleabag, where the rules are out the window and she’s getting confused. She’s angry, pervy, cruel, forgetful, unforgiving, flippant, capricious, but undeniably honest. And you can’t help but love an honest person. Or can you? For one hour only, Fleabag lets us see the world through her eyes as we follow her quest of rediscovery over a fraught and frenzied 48 hours. It may not be pretty but it’s funny as hell. The Fleabag bites back. A rip-roaring account of some sort of a female living her sort of life. Following its smash hit, sell out runs in Edinburgh and London, Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s award-winning play returns. Directed by Vicky Jones, whose play The One won the 2013 Verity Bargate Award for best new play. “Penetrating, pitch-black and nastily brilliant.”  Metro “Devastatingly good.”  Times Running time 1hr 5mins Age recommendation 16+ (sexual content) ALEX BYRNE, New International Encounter

Shockingly honest and shockingly funny, Fleabag was a real solo tour de force when I saw it at the Soho in 2014 – I’d thoroughly recommend it.

PETER AND THE WOLF

KATE DIMBLEBY SINGS THE DORY PREVIN STORY AND OTHER WILD MUSICAL TALES Performed by Kate Dimbleby and Naadia Sheriff Written with Amy Rosenthal with excerpts by Dory Previn from the autobiographies Midnight Baby and Bogtrotter Directed by Cal McCrystal

Acclaimed singer and storyteller Kate Dimbleby accompanied by Naadia Sheriff on piano and vocals, explore the extraordinary songbook & life of cult ‘70s songwriter Dory Previn. Dory was the queen of ‘70s confessional songwriters, married to composer André Previn who famously left her for a young Mia Farrow. She died on Valentine’s Day 2012, following a 40 year career. From a traumatic childhood to Hollywood scandal and her subsequent mental breakdown, Dory used music to write herself sane and sought solace in uncompromising tales of love and loneliness.

LITTLE WOLF GANG

A spellbinding live performance of a well-loved classic, brimming with sumptuous storytelling and musical delights… Little Wolf Gang brings together accomplished storyteller Martin Maudsley with virtuoso musicians Eddy Jay (accordion), David Adams (bassoon) and Fiona Barrow (violin) in a brand new show that translates the enduring brilliance of Prokofiev’s masterpiece into a thrilling theatrical interaction between classical music and spoken word storytelling. Their Peter and the Wolf sparkles with vivid imagery and performance panache and will enchant both adults and children and their families, introducing a new generation to this gem of musical characterisation.

Including Lady with the Braid, Beware of Young Girls and Did Jesus Have a Baby Sister?, this tender look at Dory’s fascinating life, and the music that marked it, showcases her little-known musical legacy of stunning songs that will resonate with all who hear them.

The show’s title story – a brave little boy’s adventurous encounter with a wild wolf – is delightfully complemented by two other marvellously musical tales from Old Russia: A daring fiddler meets a devilish stranger at the crossroads and A foolish woodcutter discovers a magical wishing tree.

Kate and Naadia have performed on Jools Holland, Woman’s Hour and Radio 3’s In Tune. Directed by the award-winning Cal McCrystal (One Man, Two Guv’nors).

“Martin Maudsley’s storytelling is masterful – engaging, witty and suitably scary, he brought each human and animal character in the story to life and had the audience spellbound.” Dorchester Arts

“Left the audience visibly shell-shocked – or laughing out loud” The Independent “A touching, raw-voiced storyteller brings us back home to what many subconsciously yearn for – authenticity.” The Stage Running time 1hr 30mins (inc. interval) Age recommendation: 12+ (contains adult themes)

ROMEO AND JULIET SHAKESPEARE

SHAKESPEARE AT THE TOBACCO FACTORY AND TOBACCO FACTORY THEATRES Directed by Polina Kalinina

My only love sprung from my only hate, Too early seen unknown, and known too late! This is a story of boy meets girl. But it is not a simple love story. These children’s lives are fuelled by mistakes, hatred, violence and exquisite pain. They are entangled in the infamous family feud without a hope of getting out alive. And yet…and yet…we cannot help but hope. Shakespeare’s timeless masterpiece proves that love is a force to be reckoned with. Romeo and Juliet will never grow old and neither will this story; this is a love story that was, is and will be again. We are delighted to welcome the young Russian director, Polina Kalinina, as the company’s first guest director since Jonathan Miller directed Hamlet in 2008. “An enchanting staging…I’ve seen brasher, bigger productions of this play that never came close to the sense of discovery and joy that this offers”  The Times on As You Like It “Another feather in Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory’s cap”  WhatsOnStage on As You Like It “This is a jewel of a performance; I cannot recommend it highly enough.”  StageTalk Magazine on As You Like It

ELIZABETH I:

FORCED ENTERTAINMENT PRESENTED BY IN BETWEEN TIME FESTIVAL AND TOBACCO FACTORY THEATRES

We’re delighted to present this unique and compelling production by Forced Entertainment as part of IBT15 Bristol International Festival at Arnolfini. What is morality in a time of war? Set during World War II, The Notebook is an unsettling story of twin brothers evacuated to their grandmother’s farm. These unnamed children are social outsiders, mavericks who understand the world by a harsh private code. As war deepens, how can the brothers live by consistent principles in a world crumbling into cruelty and opportunism? The Notebook is an unravelling knot of naïve logic, weaving dark and subversive humour from wartime hardships. For 30 years Forced Entertainment, a group of six Sheffield-based artists, have been questioning and collaborating to make theatre which speaks about the times we live in. In The Notebook, performers Richard Lowdon and Robin Arthur stand side by side to tell their story in an unsettling and uncanny double act that traps two people in a single voice and a shared perspective. “What a corker of a story, a reflection of the terrors of war, staged with stunningly beautiful simplicity” Total Theatre “Britain’s most brilliant experimental theatre company” The Guardian Running time 2hrs Age recommendation 16+ The Notebook is based on Le grand cahier by Ágota Kristóf, Éditions du Seuil, Paris, 1986. English translation © (1988) by Alan Sheridan.

VIRGIN ON THE RIDICULOUS LIVING SPIT

Written & performed by Stu Mcloughlin & Howard Coggins Directed by Craig Edwards

After an incredible sell out three week run in our Brewery Theatre this autumn, Living Spit are back due to popular demand. 1558. England. A country divided by religion and politics. The hopes of the nation lie with one woman. 2014. England. A country divided by those who enjoy plays featuring men in dresses and those who don’t. The hopes of the nation lie with two Bristolian actors. But Howard Coggins and Stuart Mcloughlin can no longer rely on apparent physical resemblances to Tudor monarchs. They’ve done Henry VIII, and the truth is neither of them look like anyone else. Things are bad. But they won’t be deterred. They’re just going to have to dig a little deeper. Act a little better. Live a little dangerous-er, as they attempt to tell the story of the greatest Monarch that ever lived – Elizabeth: The Virgin Queen. But will these two theatrical sons of Bristol be up to the challenge? Can Stu take the heat? And will Howard get jealous that he’s no longer playing the main part? With more original live music, silly songs, smutty shenanigans, perfunctory props, and hysterically historical horseplay, this promises to be (another) poorly researched lesson in Tudor history that you’ll never forget. “A hoot – go see it” StageTalk Magazine “A glorious celebration of silliness, fully appreciated by a packed home crowd.”  The Stage Running time 2hrs (inc. interval) Age recommendation 12+

RADIANT VERMIN METAL RABBIT AND SUPPORTING WALL Written by Philip Ridley Directed by David Mercatali

The world première of the latest fascinating and powerful creation from prolific writer Philip Ridley (Dark Vanilla Jungle). Ollie and Jill want to tell you about their dream home. Some of the things they did to get it you might find... shocking. But they want you to know – whatever they did – they did it all for their baby. A wickedly comic satire about a young couple offered a way out of the housing crisis, and just how far they’re prepared to go to get everything they’ve always wanted. Playful and provocative, Radiant Vermin is the showstopping first comedy by internationally acclaimed Time Out, Evening Standard and Critics’ Circle Awardwinner Philip Ridley. Directed by Evening Standard Award-nominee David Mercatali, it reunites the team behind the acclaimed premières of Tender Napalm and the Fringe First-winning smash hit Dark Vanilla Jungle, which astounded audiences in our Brewery Theatre in early 2014. “Riveting...audacious” The Independent on Dark Vanilla Jungle

INFINITE LIVES

BC SEE P03

TOBACCO FACTORY THEATRES Written by Chris Goode Directed by Nik Partridge

We’re thrilled to be starting our national tour of Chris Goode’s Infinite Lives here this March. So you fall to your death. But you don’t die. You just come back to life and you’re falling. You’re falling and dying and coming back to life and falling. And you’ll never die. You have infinite lives. John’s cat died a year ago. Now he’s quit his job and is trying, somewhat unsuccessfully, to write his new gay science fiction novel. He’s also become obsessed with an internet chatroom model. Called Carlos. He thinks. As the bit streams of data fly past and reality becomes ever harder to define, John is forced to question how much he is still in control of his own life. Written by the critically acclaimed Chris Goode (Monkey Bars and The Adventures of Wound Man and Shirley) and directed by our Director in Residence, Nik Partridge, Infinite Lives is an unsettling yet tender journey into a world which is increasingly using the virtual to define itself. It utilises a stunning sound and projection design by Timothy X Atack (Sleepdogs) and Alex Wright (Limbic Cinema) and is designed by Linbury Prize Finalist Rosanna Vize. Performed by Ray Scannell (Mimic), it is an honest exploration of what it means to be lonely in an age when we have more means to connect with each other than ever before. “Chris Goode’s play is like a beautiful thorn. It’s witty, heartbreaking and painful too. [An] enormously confident production.”  The Guardian

MOVE TO STAND IN ASSOCIATION WITH LITTLEMIGHTY

In a wickedly funny version of the Greek myth, a grief-stricken Orpheus becomes a doughnut-obsessed comedian. Orpheus is doing stand-up for the gods. A sharp new take on a classic myth, this is a bitterly funny story of love, loss and eating your way out of grief. As the audience are transformed into the gods of legend, will Orpheus ever escape his past? The award-winning Move to Stand presents a black comedy that bridges the everyday with the celestial, first performed to great acclaim at Ovalhouse in 2014. Martin Bonger (New International Encounter’s North North North, The Plasticine Men’s Keepers) delivers a gripping solo performance under the direction of Bush Theatre Directing Award-winner Alex Swift, whose previous work includes Caroline Horton’s Mess. Fat Man is an intimate and moving experience, with music specially composed by Philippe Nash providing a haunting backdrop to Orpheus’s trials through the underworld and the real world. It’s a piece about the strengths and weaknesses of the human condition and how we face our own personal gods and monsters. You don’t have to know about Orpheus and Eurydice to enjoy and understand this show, you just have to have lived. “entertaining” and “extremely moving”  Everything Theatre Running time 1hr 10mins Age recommendation 14+

SHAKESPEARE AT THE TOBACCO FACTORY AND TOBACCO FACTORY THEATRES Directed by Andrew Hilton

The scandal-mongers of eighteenth century London seem extraordinarily close to home in Sheridan’s famous comedy.

SHAKESPEARE AT THE TOBACCO FACTORY

SATURDAY MORNING WORKSHOPS Sat 17 January – Sat 09 May SATTF’s Workshop Director and actors from the company with wide ranging experience in theatre, television and film, will work with a group of young students over fifteen Saturday mornings. This will culminate in a performance in the Factory Theatre before an invited audience on the final day of the season of Shakespeare and classic drama. Suitable for ages 13 – 19. To book please email katemansbridge@sattf.org.uk or call 0117 963 3054.

Lady Sneerwell, Sir Benjamin Backbite and the unctuous Mr Snake are horribly – but deliciously – familiar. In our own time they could well have found themselves alongside Andy Coulson in the Old Bailey dock. Into this scurrilous world Sheridan weaves an affecting romance between a moral young woman and a warmhearted but spendthrift young man on the point of bankruptcy. Linking the two elements is his duplicitous brother – the aptly named ‘Surface’ – whose capacity to deceive is finally exploded. Following the sell-out success of Tom Stoppard’s Arcadia last year, we are thrilled to be matching Romeo and Juliet with yet another great non-Shakespeare classic. “the intimacy of the proceedings thrills in this unaffected revival”  The Guardian on Arcadia “Brilliant directing from Andrew Hilton is supported by terrific acting from all the cast…SATTF has become a must-see company for many theatregoers in the southwest and beyond” Plays International on Arcadia “yet another unmissable production. DERBY THEATRE

Written and performed by Caroline Horton Directed by Lucy Doherty

BUCKET CLUB

A tender, urgent and often hilarious contemporary adaptation of The Odyssey.

A humorous and poignant retelling of a Scottish myth with song, electronic sound design and hundreds of plastic bottles.

Welcome to Ithaca. Island paradise and home to Penelope. She’s married to a world famous war hero and she’s had enough of waiting quietly. Made with input from soldiers and military spouses, Penelope RETOLD is an irreverent collision of classic myth, The Odyssey and contemporary rage. Get ready for a theatrical storm that sweeps through poetry, songs, comedy and YouTube clips towards a poignant and furious conclusion. Penelope RETOLD was the first in Derby Theatre’s Retold programme, a series of newly commissioned onewoman plays. Olivier Award-nominee and Stage Best Solo Performer, Caroline Horton (Islands, You’re Not Like The Other Girls Chrissy and Mess), presents an epic, heartbreaking and fiercely playful tale of love, loneliness and the need to be free. Lucy Doherty is the BBC Performing Arts Theatre Fund Fellow for Derby Theatre where she was assistant director on The Odyssey. As co-director of Milk Presents Theatre Company, Lucy has directed A Real Man’s Guide to Sainthood (National Tour) and Bluebeard: A Fairytale for Adults (Total Theatre Nomination). “A compelling monodrama”  The Guardian “Comes perilously close to genius and announces Horton as a major talent.”  Time Out on Mess Running time 1hr Age recommendation 13+

Alan. 23. Recent graduate in Marine Biology. (High 2.2.) Son of Blakeney, Norfolk. Bedroom dweller and seal tour guide extraordinaire. When Alan discovers a mysterious young woman lying amongst the seals their lives become irreversibly entwined. But who is Lorraine? Where does she come from? And why does she take so long in the bath? Lorraine & Alan is a modern re-telling of the Selkie myth with a live soundscape and is winner of the Brighton Fringe Award for Excellence. It is about co-dependency and how those we love shape who we are. It is about moving out of your parents’ house and the sleepiness of little England. It is about delicious salty peanuts and a woman who eats them. Bucket Club are a collective of artists from Bristol and the South. The company make work that is, above all, playful. In May 2013, Bucket Club was awarded a fortnight’s residency at the Lyric Hammersmith Studio where they created Lorraine and Alan. Later that year they became an associate company of Farnham Maltings (alongside Little Bulb) and won The Pleasance’s Charlie Hartill Award for Theatre. “A very lovable show with buckets of charm” The Guardian “A triumph of layered, lo-fi storytelling and unexpected poignancy” Fest Magazine Running time 55mins

CASTING THE RUNES:

TWO GHOST STORIES BY M R JAMES NUNKIE THEATRE COMPANY

Robert Lloyd Parry returns with another thrilling one man show based on two of the greatest ghost stories ever written. Montague Rhodes James wrote his ghost stories to perform to Cambridge friends in the years leading up to World War One. Today they have lost none of their power to terrify and amuse. In Casting the Runes we meet the unforgettable Abbot of Lufford, a Mr. Karswell; magic lanternist, historian of the occult, and scourge of the academic establishment. The story is perhaps best known for being the source for the classic 1950s horror film Night of the Demon. It is partnered here by one of James’s most neglected masterpieces: The Residence at Whitminster in which a dark shadow is cast over the precinct of a peaceful English church… “Lloyd Parry’s beautifully modulated performance is perfectly judged to send an enjoyable chill down the spine.”  Metro on Oh, Whistle… “Wonderful, magical storytelling. A pleasing reminder that the spoken word can be as spine-chilling as anything in the cinema.”  The Daily Mail on A Pleasing Terror

TOBACCO FACTORY THEATRES NEWS As well as what appears in this brochure, we also work across the city and country in ways that we don’t always shout about. So, we wanted to take this opportunity to tell you a bit more about some other things we’re doing.

MAKING WORK ELSEWHERE HANSEL AND GRETEL

MACBETH

Our 2012 co-production with New International Encounter, Hansel and Gretel, toured the UK in 2013 and plays in Norway in Christmas 2014. In the translation, the unforgettable stepmother character, who screamed angrily in Norwegian throughout the play, will scream only in English!

DRACULA

Our 2014 co-production of a brand new Macbeth with Filter Theatre goes out on a national tour this spring, including Vault Festival, London; Oxford Playhouse and Citizens, Glasgow.

This autumn, our co-production of Dracula with the Mark Bruce Company completed a very successful second UK tour to incredible audience responses and press reviews.

OUTPOST Green Ginger is a Bristol-based theatre company who make internationally recognised puppet theatre. We have co-produced a new work, Outpost, with them and Nordland Visual Theatre. The work played in Norway in Autumn 2014 and will tour the UK, including Tobacco Factory Theatres, in 2015.

GIVING BACK

Here’s what our Associate Artists are up to: Filter Theatre’s brand new Macbeth fascinated audiences and critics alike when it premiered here in September and is now being developed further before touring nationally in 2015. The Paper Cinema and dancer Joêl Daniel spent time here over the summer developing their ideas and they will embark on further research and development in the spring. Jennifer Bell Company’s Bread & Butter performed at RWA, Bristol, this autumn and Jen is now starting work on her new project, MouthPiece, which will be developed over 2015.

CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE We’re embarking on an exciting new phase of our work with children and young people, which will see us offering an inspiring, accessible and coherent year-round programme of opportunities. This will include a new youth theatre, Young Theatre Makers, summer schools and monthly masterclasses. To find out more see P37.

INFINITE LIVES ASSOCIATE ARTISTS We’re delighted to be taking our fantastically received production of Chris Goode’s Infinite Lives out on a national tour in 2015, including dates here at Tobacco Factory Theatres and London’s Tristan Bates Theatre.

And finally we’re delighted to report that Wattle & Daub Figure Theatre were successful in gaining Wellcome funding for The Depraved Appetite of Tarrare the Freak, which will complete development in summer 2015, to be followed by an initial tour.

Every season we aim to give one night in one of our theatres free of charge to a local charity for fundraising or other purposes. This season, we are hosting a staged reading of a new comedy by Frances Butt – Appetite (see opposite page) with proceeds going to two excellent local charities: Unseen, working with today’s survivors of trafficking and slavery, and One25, helping women escape street sex work and build new lives. We also donated over 400 complimentary tickets to events last year to community groups and charities, a value of £5,000.

FOR ARTISTS AND AUDIENCES Tobacco Factory Theatres has always been a place of creation, development and learning, as well as performance, and over recent years we have been proud to host workshops and residencies, work with associate artists and run courses, learning opportunities and other events. We have also radically increased the amount of work we commission and produce, believing that one of the most developmental things for theatre artists to do is, quite simply, to put a show on. From 2015 we will be refocussing our support in these areas. We will continue to run Prototype (see below), where great ideas get their first outing, and in the future we intend to increase the opportunities to meet and learn from artists, such as our Lunchtime Talks below.

£15,000 commissioning fund for emerging companies and directors, details of which will be announced in the New Year. We will also commit to producing at least three pieces of new writing per year from Autumn 2015 in partnership with Òran Mór through the a Play, a Pie and a Pint scheme. We have been proud that our programming and producing polices have been influential in the growth of companies from Mark Bruce to Living Spit. We will now be consciously programming and producing with artist and company development in mind to ensure that we support artists at all stages of their career to make work and get it seen.

We will run a vastly expanded programme of workshops, courses and other activities for Children and Young people (see opposite page).

HOW TO BOOK

THEATRE STAFF

Box Office 0117 902 0344 Online www.tobaccofactorytheatres.com Email enquiries tickets@tobaccofactorytheatres.com No booking fees apply however you book!

BOX OFFICE

Opening Hours 10am – 6.30pm Monday to Saturday (exc. Public holidays) On days when performances are scheduled, the Box Office will be open until the start of the performance. If there is a show scheduled on a Sunday or during public holidays, the Box Office will be open for 2 hours prior to the performance. At certain times of the year e.g. summer or Christmas, our opening hours may vary. Please check the times on the website before you make a special trip. We can post out orders of up to 10 tickets, up to 5 days before the performance (excludes unreserved performances and tickets which require proof of ID). There is an admin fee of £1 per transaction. If you require posting of 10+ tickets, please contact Box Office.

PAYMENT

We accept all major credit and debit cards except American Express. We no longer have booking fees! No booking fee applies whether tickets are purchased in person, over the phone or online. We cannot offer refunds, but tickets can be exchanged up to 48 hours before the show, for another performance of the same production (subject to availability). An administration charge of £1 applies.

SEATING

We have now moved from unreserved to reserved seating for many productions in the Factory Theatre, but some productions will remain unreserved, including most productions in the Brewery Theatre. Shows with reserved seating will be listed as such on the show pages in this brochure. Seating plans differ for each production and can be found when booking online or at the Box Office.

GROUPS/SCHOOLS

For certain performances, for every ten tickets bought by a school or group, the eleventh is free. Other group and school discounts may apply. Please ask the Box Office for further details.

ACCESS

We are pleased to offer one free essential carer ticket for customers who require a carer to accompany them for the performance. Where possible we aim to BSL interpret certain productions in each season. Where they are available, BSL interpreted and Relaxed performances will be listed on show pages, this calendar opposite and on the Access page of the website. A relaxed performance is a slightly adapted performance to ensure a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere for those with a learning disability and their families. We also know it’s hard to get to the theatre when you have a little one under the age of one, so there will be a Baby Friendly Performance of one of the shows this season (P11). It’s the same as any other performance but the lights will be on and no one will mind if your baby cries, or if you want to feed them or walk around during the show. Both our theatres have tiered seating with only a certain number of seats on floor level. If you have any specific access requirements please contact the Box Office and we will be happy to discuss your visit in more detail.

CONCESSIONS

Concessions may be available for children (16 and under), over 60s, registered disabled, equity members, students and benefit claimants. Concessions are available at the discretion of the producing company, so may not be available for all productions. When collecting concessionary tickets, proof of concession must be provided.
