WELCOME TO THE NEWLOOK, BETTER-THAN-EVER, TOBACCO FACTORY THEATRES. Our building has been critically important to Bristol for over 100 years, first as a factory and latterly as a cultural landmark, and we feel the sense of community ownership keenly. We often talk about the importance of our theatres trying to work with and provide for as wide a range of people as possible and I think that this is exemplified by this excellent season. For example, we are proud to be programming one of Bristol’s leading non-professional theatre companies, Kelvin Players (P7), for the first time and the week after that to be partnering with Mayfest (P12) to bring one of the best theatre companies of the last decade, National Theatre of Scotland, to Bristol. We have superb family work, especially from New International Encounter (P20); great comedy (P24-26); brilliantly vibrant new work from Le Navet Bete (P14), FellSwoop Theatre (P15) and Spitz & Co (P18); and we welcome stars of the future from Bristol Old Vic Theatre School (P10, P16, P32). Further ahead I am delighted that the Bristol Festival of Puppetry, which we co-founded in 2009, is returning (P28) and that we will create a new production of Living Quarters (P29) by one of the greatest ever playwrights, Brian Friel, and directed by the mighty Andrew Hilton. As we work with an ever wider range of people, our work with Children and Young People is expanding (P34). And finally, I’m thrilled that we are working closely with the Tobacco Factory building and with partners across the city and country, as we present our brand new look to show more clearly that we are a proudly independent theatre. Through all of our history, the people that we work most closely with are always our audiences. We wouldn’t last a month without your support and I hope we see you here often through this season. Ali Robertson, Director

TARTUFFE KELVIN PLAYERS THEATRE COMPANY By arrangement with Nick Hern Books
A dark contemporary translation of Molière’s original comic satire.
Running Time 2hrs (inc. interval)
When low-life conman Tartuffe weasels his way into the life of Orgon and his family, no one is prepared for the chaos he will cause. Orgon, blinded by his admiration for the outwardly pious Tartuffe is taken in. He happily consults Tartuffe in all his affairs, even offering the hand of his daughter, Mariane, whilst the conman slyly seeks to seduce Orgon’s beautiful wife. As the family unravels, mayhem ensues. Will Tartuffe get what he wants, or what he deserves?
Tickets Full £14 / Concession £11
Tartuffe, banned in its day, still has the power to shock, despite our contemporary sensibilities. It is the presentation of unchanging human nature which has ensured it has amused and disturbed audiences in equal measure for over 350 years. The world moves on, but human beings remain the same – driven by the same needs, desires and wants as countless generations before them. The Kelvin Players, established in 1929, is one of the largest and most respected non-professional theatre companies in the South West. From its base on Gloucester Road, over 100 company members from all ages and backgrounds present a variety of productions each year. We’re delighted to present them as part of our season this spring.

THE SCHOOL FOR SCANDAL BY SHERIDAN SHAKESPEARE AT THE TOBACCO FACTORY AND TOBACCO FACTORY THEATRES Directed by Andrew Hilton
The scandal-mongers of eighteenth century London seem extraordinarily close to home in this, possibly the greatest comedy every written. Lady Sneerwell, Sir Benjamin Backbite and the unctuous Mr Snake are horribly – but deliciously – familiar. In our own time they could well have found themselves alongside Andy Coulson in the Old Bailey dock. Into this scurrilous world Sheridan weaves an affecting romance between a moral young woman and a warmhearted but spendthrift young man on the point of bankruptcy. Linking the two elements is his duplicitous brother – the aptly named ‘Surface’ – whose capacity to deceive is finally exploded.
Lunchtime Talk Sat 02 May 11am - 1pm Tickets £15 Join Director Andrew Hilton and members of the cast as they talk about working on this British theatre classic. Tickets include a deliciously sourced buffet. Please note that this is not an introduction to the season’s shows; we ask that everyone attending them has already seen the production in question, as this allows the discussion to be both deeper and more wide-ranging.
Following the sell-out success of Tom Stoppard’s Arcadia last year, we are thrilled to be matching Romeo and Juliet with yet another great non-Shakespeare classic.

LITTLE ONE
TREATS
Written by Hannah Moscovitch Directed by Laura McLean Designed by Sam Wilde
Written by Christopher Hampton Directed by Josey O’Neal Designed by Lizzy Leech
In a sleepy suburb of Ottawa, Canada, adopted siblings Aaron and Claire recount tales from their turbulent childhood together. Weaving together a narrative that touches on mental illness, mail-order brides, and taboo sexuality, Little One is both humorous and hauntingly dark. Questioning the limits of love, family and selfsacrifice it asks how much are you willing to give for the ones you care about?
Dave returns home to find the locks changed and his girlfriend living with another man. In an attempt to win her back, he begins to insinuate himself into their lives. Under the surface of this witty, urban love triangle is an unsettling examination of the cycles of power and abuse.

“...even more raw and “Beautiful, brilliant heartbreaking because and powerful enough it is entirely true.” to break into people’s The Sunday Express on Glasgow Girls hearts.” directed by Cora Bissett The Scotsman on Roadkill
Rites is a powerful and provocative new production from the extraordinary National Theatre of Scotland, exploring the deep-rooted cultural practice of Female Genital Mutilation. Tobacco Factory Theatres is delighted to be partnering with Mayfest to welcome the return of the inimitable National Theatre of Scotland (The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart – Mayfest 2012) with this bold and inspirational new project. The ritual of enforced cutting has been performed for centuries and millions of girls worldwide, often as young as five years old, are still subjected to it. The reasons are complicated. It depends who you are, and it depends what you’ve been taught. Some things are simple though: FGM is still happening across the world. FGM is happening in the UK, here and now. Rites is based on recent interviews and true stories from girls affected across the UK; mothers who feel under pressure to continue the practice, and the experiences of midwives, lawyers, police officers, teachers and health workers trying to effect change in communities. The show weaves different perspectives into a multi-voiced production exploring the complexities, misconceptions and challenges involved in trying to change, what is to many, a fundamental rite of passage.

CURRENT LOCATION FELLSWOOP THEATRE
Presented by Tobacco Factory Theatres at the Trinity Centre Written by Toshiki Okada Adapted by the company
Having presented FellSwoop Theatre’s fantastic Belleville Rendez-vous and Ablutions in the last few years, we’re delighted to present their brilliantly successful Current Location at Trinity Centre, Bristol this season. Three women stand on a cliff-edge overlooking their village; a village which is soon to disappear. "Sometimes we need to do things like this; we need to step away from our daily lives, and look at them from a distance."
IMAGE: BEN GOODMAN, FELLSWOOP THEATRE
Current Location was originally written by Japanese playwright Toshiki Okada in the direct aftermath of the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011. Set in the intimacy of a choir rehearsal room, an all-female cast presents this immersive piece of theatre with live music by Ben Osborn, which explores how rumour and the fears associated with climate change disrupts families, friends and communities. Returning from its UK tour and sell-out run at Edinburgh Festival 2014, the award-winning FellSwoop Theatre (Ablutions, Belleville Rendez-vous) present Current Location; an allegorical response to the ongoing and ever-increasing number of ecological disasters. A site specific production, developed specifically for Trinity Centre, Bristol, Current Location will immerse and enlighten audiences in the significant issues and questions surrounding climate change.

As word spreads among the locals about what Simeon is planning to do, the vultures begin to circle. One by one, a string of grotesque characters, who would not be out of place in The League of Gentlemen, visit Simeon in the hope of turning his suicide into a grand and noble gesture that will further their own particular cause. Premiered by Northern Broadsides in 2013, The Grand Gesture toured nationally to great critical acclaim. We look forward to seeing the next generation of theatre makers and performers bring it to our Factory Theatre stage.

GLORIATOR SPITZ & CO
A hilarious new show revealing just what happens when a glamorous French actress and her hapless assistant stage their version of the Hollywood blockbuster Gladiator... Gloria Delaneuf is well-versed in mime, mask and the mysteries of stage-craft. Her UK tour manager Josephine Cunningham is not. Together they have created Gloriator - an awe-inspiring production of bravery, honour, and costumes made out of cardboard. Russell Crowe may not be available, but they are determined it will be a show you’ll never forget. Inventive, physical and very silly, Gloriator was created by the French/English female comedy duo Spitz & Co. with the help of Spymonkey’s Aitor Basauri and Publick Transport’s Angus Barr. It won the Critics’ Choice Award at Exeter Ignite in 2014 and was originally developed as part of Bristol Old Vic’s Ferment.

THE VERY THOUGHT OF YOU SONGS AND SOUVENIRS OF AL BOWLLY THE MINISTRY OF ENTERTAINMENT
A new production of Tony Staveacre’s play about the life and songs of Al Bowlly.
Running Time 1hr 40mins (inc. interval)
In his heyday, Al Bowlly sold more records in the UK than Bing Crosby. When he sang with Lew Stone’s band at the Bristol Coliseum, shop-girls and debutantes mobbed the stage door. A lady from Worle sent him hand-made silk knickers through the post...
Tickets Full £12 / Concession £9
In this musical play by South West author Tony Staveacre (Jigsy), Al’s second wife conjures up memories of the heart-throb crooner through the songs he made famous before he was tragically killed in an air-raid in 1941. From the sweetshop in Bournemouth where she ended up after the war, Marjie recalls a hectic musical journey that links Raffles Hotel, Berlin in the Depression, the Rainbow Room in New York, the Grand Canyon, the Kursaal at Scheveningen in Holland, the night-clubs of the West End and the variety theatres of the North. This is a play about a singer, played by a singer, Kate McNab, whose oral history shows (Doodlebugs & Bogeymen, Normal Service Will Be Resumed) have been much-loved in Bristol since 1997. This new production welcomes fellow actor and maestro musician John Telfer (previously BOV Company, Bergerac and The Archers) to provide a musical accompaniment and a narrative commentary on the Bowlly legend.

SARAH KENDALL
A highly regarded young standup and comic performer, Jimmy McGhie performs on the UK and international comedy circuit to great acclaim. He is also a highly sought after TV warm-up, working for Channel 4’s Deal Or No Deal and ITV’s Loose Women.
Brand new show from multi award-winning Australian storyteller Sarah Kendall. Exploring themes from her childhood, she recalls a pool party in 1989 that was so disastrous, the ramifications are still being felt today. It was a bad pool party.
"A delightful turn of phrase, instantly likeable stand-up." Chortle

PHIL HAMMOND SUSAN CALMAN GAMES TO PLAY WITH YOUR DOCTOR
LADY LIKE
THE COMEDY BOX
THE COMEDY BOX
Medicine is jolly serious, life and death, pain and suffering, pills and needles. But wouldn’t a trip to the doctor be much more fun if it was a game? In his new show, Dr Phil Hammond puts the fun back into being ill!
Award-winning comedian Susan Calman is currently on her first ever UK tour.
Dr Phil takes you on an incredible journey of political stupidity into the Heath Robinson monster of the NHS ‘reforms’. Only patients can save the NHS now. It’s yours. You pay for it. You decide what to do with it. But see this hilarious show first. Phil Hammond is an NHS doctor in Bath, a writer, broadcaster, campaigner and comedian. He has been Private Eye’s medical correspondent for over 20 years and has appeared on Have I Got News For You, The News Quiz, The Now Show, The One Show, Countdown, Long Live Britain, Celebrity Antiques, Road Trip and BBC Radio Bristol. "One of the most entertainingly subversive people on the planet." The Guardian
If you’ve seen her before, Lady Like will be a reassuring couple of hours spent with the woman her neighbours call "the mad cat lady". If you don’t know who she is, Lady Like will, at the very least, make you feel better about your own life. A show about being older, wiser and liking yourself whatever anyone might say. Exquisite comedy from Susan Calman, as seen and heard on The News Quiz, Calman is Convicted (Best Radio Comedy 2013 – Writers Guild Award), QI, Have I Got News For You, Fresh Meat and Would I Lie To You. "Susan Calman exudes a cheery joie de vivre, but behind it is a steely Glaswegian defiance" Chortle "Confident, compact... cracking." London Evening Standard
"If Dr Phil was a linctus, you should swig him by the litre" The Times

Some people wear their hearts on their sleeves, Nutty Noah wears his pants on his head... with pride!

WEAR YOUR PANTS WITH PRIDE
FLY IN A PIE PUPPET THEATRE
IMAGE: MARC PARRET T
Nutty Noah is back and so are his pants! It’s been some time since he was here at Tobacco Factory Theatres and while he was gone he’s won the Primary Times Party Entertainer of the year award. OOOOooooo Fancy! We’ve let him loose in the Brewery Theatre this time where he’s allowed to make as much mess as he likes and he promises to do just that. There is much more than magic in the show, there’s lots of music and silly original songs, crazy juggling and audience participation. If you don’t cry with laughter he has some chopped up onions available to help you out.
A real must see for children over four! "I wear my pants with pride" William, aged 5 "He made Mummy snort laugh through her nose" Freya, aged 9 "Pantastic" Oliver, aged 6 "Nutty Noah was sooooo funny, I wee’d on the floor" Megan, aged 3n, aged 3
Lock up your cheeses! The Mice on Skates are heading your way. No manky old cat is going to stop these rodents; they’re on a mission to discover the world’s greatest cheese!! It’s a risky business but luckily there are lots of friendly mice all over the world eager to help them in their quest. But will they find what they are looking for? Surely no other cheese could be as good as home cheese? Directed by puppeteer and object artist Marc Parrett, Mice on Skates is a wonderfully eccentric blend of physical theatre, songs and puppetry. It’s a show about trying new things, meeting new people and finding out what’s really important to you. * * * * * "We would absolutely recommend the show to others with young children" whatsgoodtodo.com * * * **"This all singing all dancing piece is perfectly crafted to fit as much fun as possible into a child friendly fifty minute run time." BY BRIAN FRIEL TOBACCO FACTORY THEATRES AND SHAKESPEARE AT THE TOBACCO FACTORY
We are delighted to announce our new production of Living Quarters, by the Irish playwright, Brian Friel, celebrated author of Translations, Faith Healer and Dancing at Lughnasa. This is a major step in our ever increasing repertoire as a producer (see P36 to find out more). We’re thrilled to build upon our flourishing relationship with Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory as we co-produce with them, with the inimitable Andrew Hilton directing. An ordinary army officer suddenly becomes a hero in middle age. He returns in triumph to his battalion base in Donegal, to his family and to his young second wife. But a day of celebration will soon turn to tragedy. The heart-rending story is fascinatingly told as a perpetual reconstruction, presided over by a master of ceremonies, referred to only as ‘Sir’. The characters break from the narrative to plead with him to allow them to alter the course of events, but he ensures that they follow on remorselessly to the moment that has changed all their lives. This captivating play, from one of the greatest playwrights of all time, has only ever been professionally performed once in England before, when it was directed by Andrew Hilton for Show of Strength in Bristol over 20 years ago. We’re excited that Andrew will return to direct a new production of this underperformed masterwork.

FALSTAFF BY VERDI OPERA PROJECT AND TOBACCO FACTORY THEATRES
IMAGE: MAT THEW WILLIAMS-ELLIS
Verdi’s great opera Falstaff explodes onto our stage this autumn in a coproduction between Opera Project and Tobacco Factory Theatres.
Running Time 2hrs 40mins (inc. interval)
When the mischievous, lecherous Falstaff sets out to seduce the beautiful Mrs Ford and Mrs Page to get at their husbands’ money, he feels sure to succeed. But will the women let him get away with it? And what will happen when their husbands find out his plans? Much trickery, hilarity and humiliation ensues in Verdi’s Falstaff; not only one of the greatest comic masterpieces, but also one of the supreme challenges in all opera with its hair-raising ensembles and breakneck pace.
Venue Factory Theatre (Reserved Seating)
Under the shadow of Herne’s mighty oak, a stunning cast headed by the inimitable Simon Thorpe (Tosca) will perform this wonderful opera. Boito’s masterly libretto takes inspiration from Shakespeare’s Merry Wives of Windsor and Henry IV. With Verdi’s exceptional score, Falstaff is universally regarded as the finest of all Shakespeare-based operas. Following last season’s sell-out Madam Butterfly, Verdi’s final farewell work, and his only comedy, is bristling with energy and awash with fabulous melodies. We can’t wait!

THE LIGHT PRINCESS TOBACCO FACTORY THEATRES IN ASSOCIATION WITH PEEPOLYKUS
FROM CINDERELLA: A FAIRYTALE, IMAGE BY FARROWS CREATIVE
Hot on the heels of our exceptionally well-received 101 Dalmatians last year, The Light Princess is Tobacco Factory Theatres’s latest creation for Christmas, inspired by George MacDonald’s beautiful original fairy tale. In a kingdom far away, lives an extraordinary princess; a princess strikingly different to any you’ll have ever heard of. Strikingly different, in fact, to anyone who has ever lived. Because, you see, she has no gravity. Now you might be thinking, what fun - to fly and float and bound around weightless in the air! But of course, it’s not as simple as that. Her windows are forever closed, she can’t run free and forever light-hearted; she can never take anything or anyone seriously. Especially not the prince who falls in love with her... We can’t wait to bring this startling, bewitching fairy tale to life using exceptional choreography, theatrical magic, original music and a lot of love. George MacDonald’s story will be adapted for the stage by Thomas Eccleshare (Dancing Brick and Helen) and Director John Nicholson (Peepolykus and Santa’s Little Trolls), with music from the divine Verity Standen and design by Phil Eddolls. Join us this Christmas at Tobacco Factory Theatres, as we tell the incredible story of the Princess who just can’t keep her feet on the ground.

If there is a show scheduled on a Sunday or during public holidays, the Box Office desk will be staffed for 2 hours prior to the performance and staff will be contactable by email, but the phone lines will not be open. At certain times of the year e.g. summer or Christmas, our opening hours may vary. Please check the times on the website before you make a special trip. Don’t forget – you can book online anytime!
Posting Tickets We can post out orders of up to 10 tickets, up to 5 days before the performance (excludes unreserved performances and tickets which require proof of ID). There is an admin fee of £1 per transaction. If you require posting of 10+ tickets, please contact Box Office.
Payment We accept all major credit and debit cards except American Express. We no longer have booking fees! No booking fee applies whether tickets are purchased in person, over the phone or online. We cannot offer refunds, but tickets can be exchanged up to 48 hours before the show, for another performance of the same production (subject to availability). An administration charge of £1 applies.
Seating Shows with Reserved Seating will be listed as such on the show pages in this brochure. Due to the flexible nature of our spaces, seating plans differ for each production. For more on seating plans see P44.
Groups/Schools For certain performances, for every ten tickets bought by a school or group, the eleventh is free. Other group and school discounts may apply. Please ask the Box Office for further details.
Access We are pleased to offer one free essential carer ticket for customers who require a carer to accompany them for the performance. Both our theatres have tiered seating with only a certain number of seats on floor level. If you have any specific access requirements please contact the Box Office and we will be happy to discuss your visit in more detail. Where possible we aim to BSL interpret certain productions in each season and provide relaxed performances to ensure a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere for individuals with additional needs. Where they are available, BSL interpreted and Relaxed performances will be listed on show pages, the calendar in this brochure and on the Access page of the website. We also know it’s hard to get to the theatre when you have a little one under the age of one, so there will be a Baby Friendly Performance of one of the shows this season (P18). It’s the same as any other performance but the lights will be on and no one will mind if your baby cries, or if you want to feed them or walk around during the show.
Concessions Concessions may be available for children (16 and under), over 60s, registered disabled, equity members, students and benefit claimants. Concessions are available at the discretion of the producing company, so may not be available for all productions. When collecting concessionary tickets, proof of concession must be provided.
