egardless of how much I love travelling, there is nothing quite like going home. Walking through the front door to be surrounded by the familiar is always a comfort, whether I’ve been gone one day or two weeks. The cool thing about homes is that you walk in and within minutes, you have a pretty good idea of the person who lives there. One step in the door of my house and you will quickly take notice of the fact that, 1) I love animals (this is evident from the presence of my actual pets and the amount of animal related décor), 2) I love colour, 3) I’m a bit of a nerd, and 4) My tastes swing towards the eclectic side (and I guess this translates to my actual personality too). As a sanctuary and space where we can truly be free to express ourselves, our homes are a true reflection of who we are and what motivates us. Ever since buying my first home, I’ll admit, I’ve become a bit obsessed with the décor side of things. I’m constantly thinking of ways to add a bit
more gold, improve the feng shui, and make the space a little more…me. I’m never all that caught up in what’s trendy, but I’ll admit that I definitely do read about what the Jones’ are up to and get a little pang of satisfaction if something I’ve recently done matches up to “what’s in”. And when I don’t have the budget to acquire the latest object of my fancy I lapse into my default D.I.Y. (page 47) mode. While trends come and go, chances are if I’m going to invest time and effort seeing the latest obsession come to life, it’ll have my personal brand on it, extending the shelf life. Not to mention the ego boost when someone says, “where did you get that?” and I can reply with, “I made it!” For me, home is where my most recent crafty creation is. Happy reading, and I hope you enjoy the latest issue of Today Magazine!

CREATING MY
DREAM
KITCHEN By Lynn Ogryzlo
I was sitting in a coffee shop with some of my dearest lady friends: a real estate agent, a professional buyer (what a dream job!), an actress, a retiree and me, a food writer. Somehow the conversation came around to designing our perfect kitchens.
W
hile the theatre buyer wanted the most unique and quirky look, the actress was a minimalist and wanted very little in pure white. The retiree thought that investing in high quality materials made for a solid kitchen, while the real estate agent was married to the open concept trends that are so popular with the younger homebuyers today. So what’s your ideal kitchen look like? I think it’s interesting that not one of my friends talked of the kind of cooks they are. Not one of them talked of designing a kitchen that worked for their cooking style. I cook in my kitchen more than I eat, so my ideal design would be a place where the process of cooking is easy, efficient and yes, even enjoyable: it has a window with a view and natural light; plenty of countertop space, nice things to cook and work with, a few friends always on call, laughter, music—and a big island. For it all to really work, the kitchen would need to be part of an ensemble of spaces that would include an equally wonderful dining area. >>

Kitchens are fundamentally about a lifestyle around good food and if it’s the heart of the house, then design it with heart. Does your kitchen have all of that? I find it disheartening that homebuilder’s work with a one-size kitchen fits all approach. Some allow for a bit of alterations, but the ideal scenario would be to design a kitchen from scratch, to customize it so well, it becomes a part of you and your lifestyle. Kitchens are the soul of the house and yes, their primary function is all about cooking, but they’re about so much more. They’re also a place we congregate, where the kids do their homework, where we teach our children to cook. Kitchens are both a workspace and a casual space for dining and entertaining; it’s where we cook with a glass of wine in hand surrounded by friends and a place where family nibbles while we put the final touches on a holiday meal. Kitchens are fundamentally about a lifestyle around good food and if it’s the heart of the house, then design it with heart. Here are a few thoughts to get you going in the right direction.
Budget
If you’re thinking of renovating your kitchen you probably have a budget already drawn up. There are a lot of line items on it and you need to pick and choose where you spend those limited dollars. Prefab cabinets are beautiful these days so I would spend my money on a double wall oven or good induction range. I had a gas range for many years until I got my induction cooktop and now, I would never go back.
Layout
Don’t be restricted by yesterday’s kitchen triangle layout. Instead, think ergonomically, the refrigerator and the sink need to be linked with lots of workspaces in between but the cooking section can be a little more independent.
Light
Besides all the bells and whistles, the most desirable element in a kitchen is light! There is a real benefit to a sink with a view and one that fills your workspace with daylight. It's really pleasant when that can happen. If not, then face the sink to the people that might congregate in the kitchen with you.
Kitchen Islands
Todays kitchens need a set up that separates the wine-drinking guests from the dinner action and an island is the perfect way to do this. Depending where your island is, it can include a stovetop or sink. If your kitchen table is on the other side of the island, plan on your stovetop fitting there. That way you can chat with guests, face-to-face while cooking. Islands are perfect for extra storage as well. Hide the unsightly microwave in the island.
Kitchen Appliances
Everyone’s kitchen needs appliances but the size and kind you have will be different from one cook to another. For example, serious home cooks are opting for commercial, sliding glass door refrigerators and a separate upright freezer. If you’ve got >>

need to be coordinated. It’s a great opportunity to show off your collection of teapots or antique plates. You can use frosted glass but don’t be fooled, you can still see the collection of mismatched mugs behind it.
Range Hoods
Some people go all out for those manly range hoods that dominate the visual appeal of a kitchen. Resist this big toy. As long as it does its job, pick one with small, simple lines that will blend into the kitchen design. Proper ventilation is imperative in the kitchen and a quality hood will extract cooking smoke and smells without making much noise.
Microwave the space, go for it. Double wall ovens are popular but you’ll need counter space on at least one side of it. Don’t forget small appliances. For a well-designed kitchen, keep your counters clear of lots of little appliances. My heavy Kitchen Aid stand mixer is on a rollaway butcher block so I can roll it in and out of the pantry.
Countertops
If you like to cook, you’ll want a good amount of countertop space to make cooking easier. One of the best places to maximize countertop space is between the cook-top or stove and the sink. This area is commonly used for prepping dinner and storing pots and pans and should be as large as possible. It matters less what the countertop is made of and more about its uses. For kitchens that serve as an eating place as well as a cooking place, multi-level surfaces ensure that kids and adults alike can easily access eating spaces without getting in the way of hot pots and pans.
Kitchen Sink
I work in the kitchen with a sink full of hot soapy water and I clean as I go. I prefer a traditional, double, undermount sink and a commercial extendable faucet. My dream is for a built-in drain board on the other side of the faucet. Building it back there means my washing area is compact and not overflowing on prime prep areas. Resist the urge for a square, deep sink. They don’t drain properly, are difficult to clean and take a huge amount of water to fill for dishes.
Glass Doors
Glass doors on your upper cabinets give a sense of depth and openness to the kitchen. To pull it off well, the glasses and plates inside
Let’s talk microwaves – my pet peeve. I hate the look of them and even more, I dislike the use of them. I may use a microwave once a week and yet, it has wormed its way into my kitchen as a major appliance. If you need a microwave, build a small one into the island or have electricity built into a pantry and put it in a pullout shelf. Consider one of those in-wall speed ovens that serves as a second oven and microwave.
Corner Cabinets
There’s no perfect storage solution for corner cabinets but I was leafing through a magazine and discovered a tall garbage pail in the corner cabinet that had a second access from the outside of the building for removal – brilliant! I somehow don’t think it would work in our cold Canadian winters but I love the idea.
Pantry
A pantry is like a one stop shopping centre for the food you have on hand and if it’s big enough, for kitchen equipment as well. If you’re storing kitchen equipment inside a pantry or cupboard, plan on installing an electrical plug so you don’t have to keep pulling out your equipment to work in the kitchen.

the sticky side of sweet making it your way
Written by Lynn Ogryzlo | Photos by Jon Ogryzlo
The first memory I have of my mother’s sticky buns is from when I was just a little girl. Hot bread from the oven was a regular treat in our house, everything from raisin buns to braided bread. My favourite though, the one I longed for the most, was her famous sticky buns. I remember standing at the counter on my tiptoes, fingers grasping the countertop waiting for permission to pull one from the tray. Just at the
critical moment, my brothers would arrive and we’d fight for them, pulling one from the tray, the hot sugar burning our fingers and seizing on our teeth. It really didn’t matter much; they were such a heavenly treat. Sticky buns may look like Chelsea buns or cinnamon rolls because they’re all made with a rich yeasty dough stuffed, rolled, sliced and baked but they’re a world apart when it comes to flavour. Sticky buns can be a dessert, breakfast treat or an anytime snack as my mother would serve them. The dough is rolled into a flat rectangle and spread with melted butter, brown sugar, pecans and cinnamon. Then it’s rolled up jelly-roll style and sliced into thick spirals of yeasty, sugared dough. Before they were put in the pan I remember my mother would melt lots of butter with brown sugar and chopped pecans on the stove. She’d bring it to a boil and the sugar would dissolve into a syrupy mass. Then she’d add her secret ingredient, a little bit of maple syrup or honey to ensure the stickiness and gooeyness of the finished product. Still warm, the sweet and sticky concoction was poured onto the bottom of a large baking dish and that’s when she’d place the slices of rolled dough on top. It was sheer agony to watch her cover the pan with a clean dishcloth and set it in the warmest place in the kitchen so the dough would rise just enough to make the dough light and airy when baked. Once risen, they’d crowd each other in the pan and the flavour of the syrupy bottom would be infused into the dough. When they came out of the oven, she’d flip the sticky buns onto a large platter and hold the baking pan overtop so the syrupy sweetness could drizzle over the buns. I suppose the smart thing to do would be to wait until they were cool, but we couldn’t. Pulling them apart when they were hot made them deliciously dangerous. The dough was warm and fluffy, the nuts soft and cinnamony and the sticky syrup yummy and messy. We’d be licking our fingers forever after eating them: they are the ultimate treat! >>

Contrary to what some bakers use, the best sticky buns are not made with white bread dough, but an elegant yeasted dough, rich in butter and eggs with a delicious flavour that lies somewhere between bread and pastry. Technically speaking, the recipe is a cross between a brioche and challah bread. Add to this deliciously decadent dough, a sweet inside that is sugar laced with any flavours your mind can concoct and a sticky outside that can include dried fruit, nuts, chocolate or anything that allows you to put your own personal twist on them. I think everyone should have a sticky bun tradition in their family where you add your own favourite ingredients to make them truly personal. After all, if sticky buns are made in three parts; dough, sweet insides and sticky, gooey outside, then you’ve just been given lots of opportunity to change up the flavours in an infinite number of ways. Using the brioche dough recipe below, pick a sweet inside and sticky stuff for the bottom and bake at 350°F for 20 to 35 minutes. Here are some ideas to get you started.
the dough Brioche is an elegant yeasted dough, rich in butter and eggs, a cross between bread and pastry. It is difficult to make without an industrial bread mixer so here is an easy, cheater recipe that works well. Whisk 1 ½ tablespoons of active dry yeast into ½ a cup of water. Add a pinch of sugar and set aside for 5 minutes. Meanwhile, melt ½ cup of butter with 1 cup of milk until hot. Pour into a large bowl of a mixer fitted with dough hooks. Add 1/3 cup of sugar, a tablespoon of honey and 2 teaspoons of salt. Mix
on low to dissolve the sugar. Add the creamy yeast and 4 eggs. Add 5 cups of all-purpose flour and beat on low speed for 3 minutes. Continue to beat on medium low, adding an additional cup of flour, maybe more. Knead on medium low for 8 to 10 minutes. Let rise for at least 2 hours.
Maple Whisky Bacon: Add ½ cup of butter, 1 cup of packed brown sugar, a tablespoon of whisky and ½ cup of maple syrup in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring until the mixture is bubbling. Add 1 ½ cups of crunchy bacon bits.
the sticky stuff
the sweet insides
This is the magic of all sticky buns. Make on the stove top and pour into the bottom of a prepared pan, tilting to coat the bottom evenly. A 18 x 14-inch rectangle pan works well. Set aside to make the buns. Traditional Melt: one stick of butter in a saucepan with 1 ½ cups of packed brown sugar. Add 1 to 2 tablespoons dark corn syrup and 2 tablespoons of heavy cream. Cook until bubbling. Maple Walnut: Add ½ cup of butter, 1 cup of packed brown sugar and ½ cup of maple syrup in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring until the mixture is bubbling. Add 1 ½ cups of chopped walnuts. Salted Caramel Pecan: Combine ½ cup of butter and 1 cup of packed dark brown sugar in a saucepan over medium heat. Cook until sugar dissolves. Stir in 3 tablespoons of heavy cream and ½ teaspoon of salt. Stir and cook but don’t allow it to boil. Add 1 ½ cups of chopped pecans. Cinnamon Melt: ½ cup of butter with ¾ cup of packed dark brown sugar over medium heat. Stir until sugar dissolves and add ¾ cup of heavy cream, 1/3 cup of honey, a pinch of salt and ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon. Simmer until golden brown and glossy, about 4 to 5 minutes. Add 1 ½ cups of chopped pecans.
Always baste the rolled out dough with plenty of warm, melted butter before sprinkling the sweet insides overtop. Roll, slice into equal rounds, place in the baking pan over the sticky stuff and let rest for an hour. Nutella Spread: 1 ½ cups of Nutella evenly over top of the dough, leaving a half-inch border on one long side. Sprinkle with half a cup of chopped hazelnuts. Roll. Works well with traditional sticky stuff sprinkling a cup of roughly chopped hazelnuts overtop. Classic Cinnamon: Stir together 2/3 cup of packed light brown sugar with a tablespoon of ground cinnamon. Sprinkle over rolled out dough. Works well with any sticky stuff. Apple Pie: Mix together 1 ½ cups of applesauce and ¼ teaspoon of nutmeg. Spread evenly over top of the dough, leaving a half-inch border on one long side. Works well with cinnamon sticky stuff or salted caramel pecan sticky stuff. Apple Honey: Caramelize 2 cups of peeled apple slices in ¼ cup of honey until the apples are soft, about 5 minutes. Spoon the filling overtop of the dough and sprinkle with a scant amount of pecans. Works well with cinnamon sticky stuff or salted caramel pecan sticky stuff.

TRENDS
all’s well that
TRENDS WELL With each new year, comes new trends, and while it’s not advisable to jump on every bandwagon that rolls on by, check out these trend selections for 2016, and hopefully you’ll find a couple that suit your style. The most important thing when it comes to home decor is that you enjoy the piece, not that it’s trendy, but hey, if the two happen to match up, then all the better! Pieces that you really truly enjoy, never go out of style, and you’ll be able to continue enjoying them even as other trends come and go. >>

have RESERVATIONS? It’s no secret that the kitchen is the most popular and most expensive room in the house. For this reason we tend to be a bit reserved when it comes to incorporating trends or remodelling. This year’s trends make it easy to keep current as it’s all about classic elements and colours. Cool sedate colour palettes are elevated with natural wood finishes, warm metals and mirrored tile, making this room the hottest room in the house.
TEXTURES
Adding different textures throughout the room can add visual interest and some depth to the room. This is easily achieved through incorporating a textured tile or backsplash. Other easy ways to incorporate texture are on fabrics on chairs or benches.
APPLIANCES
Popular colours for appliances seem to change every few years, and this year the trend is predicted to be black stainless steel. Sleek, sophisticated and functional. Source: Kelly Deck via Home Adore
COLOUR
Although white will always remain a popular kitchen colour choice, soft muted colours are becoming popular for kitchens. Charcoal, gray, pale blue, green gray, offwhite are all popular alternatives to just plain white. Lighter wood tones are also becoming popular such as walnut, whitewashed woods and white oak.

mirror, mirror ON THE WALL It might be apt to say, that this year, the bathroom is fairest room of them all. Utilitarian in nature, this room often gets cursory consideration. That’s about to change – in a big way. Give in to your opulent side with plush homey accents, ornate fixtures and details to really make this room shine.
COLOUR
On trend colours for the bathroom are all cool and calm. Blues and emerald greens are great for achieving this kind of feel. When paired with white, it makes for a fresh, uplifting environment. These colours also look good with wood accents, metallic accents and different rustic elements.

METALLICS
Metal just continues to become increasingly popular, and it’s not slowing down for 2016. Metallic items are great at adding a little glamour to a room, whether it comes in the form of a towel rack, shower rail, fixtures for the faucet or on a larger scale, sinks or bathtubs. HOMEY BATHROOMS
Not everyone has the room to implement this, but adding some homey items to the bathroom is popular this year. Plush chairs, fresh flowers: a room you feel comfortable hanging out in basically.

Historically known by many names, it has evolved over the years from the parlour room to the drawing room to what we currently call the living room – whatever you want to refer to it as, it remains the most adaptable room in the house. This year, the flooring takes centre stage creating a solid foundation to showcase this year’s textured trend, once again restoring this area to a Great Room.

FANCY FLOORS
Floors are going to become a focal point for 2016. We are talking bold colours, patterns, heirloom rugs and industrial style flooring. Make your floor a focus by getting something that contrasts with the rest of the room.

Groove IS IN THE
HOUSE this year are leaning towards more muted and T rends subdued, so it’s great to add a little quirkiness in
some spots in your home. These D.I.Y’s are both useful and nice to look at, and while you won’t want to incorporate them everywhere, they are great for integrating pops of colour and grooviness. >>

Sometimes the grout in our house ends up looking a little dingy, and it’s not the easiest thing to clean, but never fear, there is an easier solution than retiling and it doesn’t require as steady of a hand as you might think-grout painting! Grout paint (called Polyblend Grout Renew) is available in several colours. You don’t ever need to match it to your old grout (because it will completely cover it), it just needs to match the tile.
YOU’LL NEED º º º º
Polyblend Grout Renew A toothbrush Paper towels/rags Small dish
beckyclarkeinteriors.files.wordpress.com
STEPS Start by pouring some of the paint into a dish and use the toothbrush to spread the paint on the grout (don’t worry if it gets on the tile, it will wipe off easily with a paper towel or rag). It’s probably easiest to let the paint dry a bit on the grout, then wipe off the tile. The paint dries quite quickly on the grout as it just soaks right in. Continue to do this throughout the entire room. It can be time consuming, but the end result is worth it.
Tip: If you are feeling fancy, you can get coloured grout paint
(groutshields.com/), which can be matched to any paint chip from any of the most popular paint manufacturers. Coloured grout works great for small tiled areas such as backsplashes to add that little pop of fun colour. effortless-style.com >>

These are super cute and extremely easy to make. These can be good for your desk at work, on a windowsill at home, or in a kids bedroom to add a little greenery.
THINGS YOU’LL NEED º A plastic or foam dinosaur º Spray paint (these tend to look really cool painted white or gold) º Utility knife º Succulent plants º Soil º A drill
STEPS 1. 2.
3.
4. 5.
Once you have found the perfect dinosaur, spray paint it in whatever colour you like. Cut a small circular portion out of the top of the dinosaur using the exacto knife. This is the spot the plant will sit in, so the hole needs to be large enough to allow for the plant to grow. Use the drill to make two holes in the belly of the dinosaur. This is necessary to allow the plant to drain when you water it, which will prevent moldiness. Fill the dinosaur up with soil and add the plant. You can also glue the dinosaur to a small tray, which will help catch any water or soil that ends up falling out. Just make sure to spray paint the tray the same colour as the dinosaur.
Note: it’s easy to make a planter out of pretty much anything that you are able to make a hole in. As long as there is sufficient room for the plant to grow roots, and there is a drainage system at the bottom, it should work just fine. Other ideas for creative planters include: old books, chandeliers, rubber boots, teacups, teapots, driftwood, etc.)

If dinosaurs aren’t your style, try converting old books into planters. Same idea as the dinosaur but once you’ve made the hole in the pages be sure to line it with wax paper to protect the rest of the book from moisture.

Influence UNDER THE
BY
JILL THAM
DIFFERENCES IN DESIGN TRENDS Over last the decade, the rules of design have slowly changed. Not only can you wear white after Labour Day, you can also select the accessories for a room before the paint colour. In 2016, the traditional hard and fast rules of interior design may no longer apply: leaving design to be an open book of personal preference and personality. Niagara College Instructor and Interior Designer, Lisa Kelley-DiPalma from LKD Interior Design, teams up with Professional Organizer/Stager, Colleen Donovan at CMD Home Staging, to lend their expertise regarding the different influences in design, how these styles blend together, what types of design to consider when selling your home, and hot trends for 2016.
HOW HAVE THE RULES OF INTERIOR DESIGN CHANGED OVER THE YEARS? “In the past, design styles were definitely more black and white. Now, there is a grey area. The guidelines are softer, more flexible, and a lot less rigid, but certain design principles like scale and proportion are still maintained.” says Kelley-DiPalma. There is also a tendency to see a “mix and match” approach to interior design styles. “It is simple to use a certain element of one aspect of a style even though you don’t like the taste,” she says. “You can incorporate grandma’s heirlooms into your design, even if you are not into antiques. For example, painting a French Bergere chair gloss black.”
COUNTRY Warm and comforting, white and pastel colours like light green, lavender or primrose yellow, fit nicely with a country themed room. Although the country look is less cluttered than a Victorian room, the use of florals is still predominant in the design. Checkered patterns, floral chintz, polished oak finishes, or a simple walk in the garden can inspire this theme. “Country often overlaps with rustic as there is a wood feel to it,” says Kelley-DiPalma. “We may see a herringbone pattern of the floor in the mud room,” says Kelley-DiPalma. “It is also easily mixed with traditional.” adds Donovan.
ONE OF A KIND
2. TUSCAN Are you feeling like you need a getaway from the hectic pace of everyday life? Perhaps an escape to the hills of Italy will help. Tuscan design includes terracotta, marble statues, and the sound of water flowing from a fountain. With high ceilings, sturdy wood furniture, and lots of greenery, this rustic feel makes a warm and inviting design. “Tuscan designs are very popular in restaurants,” says Kelley-DiPalma. “We see a lot of clay floors and wrought iron accessories in these commercial designs reminiscent of a winery in Italy.”
3. ZEN Peaceful, tranquil, and natural are three words that embody a Zen interior design. The use of calm, neutral colours, and clean lines are a few of the design principles associated with the harmonious Zen Philosophy, “A Zen look is popular in bathrooms where you can bring in a spalike feel by using natural plants and stones. Woods like teak give the bathroom an earthy look and work well with moisture,” states Kelley-DiPalma.
4. ART DECO Art Deco was introduced at the 1925 Exposition in Paris, France and the bold and colourful design quickly became all the rage. Deco, short for decorative, uses bold decorations, mirrors, and circle motifs. “Art deco uses wood, metal, glass, and marble. Heavy molded plastics and strong lines mixed with curves are also used,” explains Kelley-DiPalma. This style, mostly found in office spaces, was a very influential style in its time period. “We tend to see a lot of buildings with the Art Deco appeal in larger cities like New York.” >>
TODAYMAGAZINE.CA 59
5. MODERN
6. CONTEMPORARY
Modern design is influenced by the machine age and incorporates steel and concrete elements into the design. “Traditional modern design has an uncluttered look with clean and sophisticated lines,” says KelleyDiPalma. Open floor plans, oversized tiles, sanded wood floors that reduce the appearance of grains, and bookcases built into the walls are features of a modern design. Painting a brick wall white can easily assist in achieving a modern look. “It is usually not functional for families, as the design of the furniture may have sharp edges and less storage for children’s toys. However, with help there is a way to work in storage with a modern home,” adds Kelley-DiPalma. “A modern look pairs well with contemporary as contemporary is a softer version of modern,” states Donovan.
“Contemporary design refers to what is popular or used right now, at the moment. It is ever changing and encompasses a range of styles from different eras,” explains Donovan. A contemporary look features smooth furniture, minimal accessories, open concept, and natural light. Neutral colours adorn the walls and a splash of colour may enter the design in the accessories or art work. “Simple geometric elements such as waves or circles are used on throw cushions, centrepieces, blankets, or large wall art,” adds Donovan. “There are few rules in this causal and comfortable design.”
7. ANTIQUE Spending hours at an antique sale searching for the perfect find is a popular pastime as heirlooms and artifacts are the inspirations behind antique designs. “Antiques can be
from any period, but a true antique is a piece that is at least 100 years old,” states Kelley-DiPalma. The craftsmanship that is engrained in the detail of these frames and mahogany or rosewood bureaus further define the design style.
8. SHABBY CHIC “Shabby Chic is a spin-off of the Vintage look from the 50s, 60s and 70s,” says KelleyDiPalma. “The colours are mostly pastels and it uses neutral slip coverings and has a pretty feel to it.” Features of the low cost design can be easy to acquire. “Shabby chic incorporates those flea market or estate sale finds like a tea cup,” adds Kelley-DiPalma. Antique frames, chandeliers, and feminine vintage knobs are all ways to create a shabby chic look. “In this design the wood of the furniture has a worn look to it,” adds Donovan.
“Vintage and Shabby Chic are in the same family and both have an eclectic look,” concludes Kelley-DiPalma.
9. VICTORIAN Tapestries, brocades, and velvet defines the ornate and extravagant style of the Victorian era. “Victorian style reflects the period of Queen Victoria’s reign, from 1837 until 1901,” states Donovan. It can be suggested that Victorian design has had a long reign because people are more comfortable recreating the past; especially a theme of the wealthy. This design often includes floral and striped wallpaper, patterned furniture, wall scones, and draperies. “Victorian décor can be perceived as cluttered unless it is strategically placed to create a romantic atmosphere. When tastefully and skillfully embellished, one can create an elegant and sophisticated space,” concludes Donovan.
WHAT IS NEW FOR 2016? “Grey was the new black, and although it is still really popular, we are trying to break away from it by keeping it neutral and matching it with new colours,” says Kelley-DiPalma. The grey will be mixed with the Pantone colours of the year which are a rose petal
pink called Rose Quartz and a blue called Serenity,” says Donovan.
WHAT SHOULD HOMEOWNERS THINK ABOUT WHEN DECORATING? “Knowing the needs of the individual or family is an important aspect in planning your design. I recommend that my clients go on-line and get an idea of what they like. The next biggest aspect is their budget. I suggest they add 15% to their budget for contingencies,” explains Kelley-DiPalma.
THINKING OF SELLING YOUR HOME? “When staging a home to sell, it is important to keep things neutral in order to appeal to the masses,” states Donovan. “A contemporary look with soft colours on the wall and pops of colour are the way to go.” Donovan always explains to her clients that although personal items have sentimental value, they limit the buyer’s pool. “Designers like Lisa accessorize and fill the space. In staging to sell, we want to empty it,” laughs Donovan. “It’s not about what I like, or what the homeowner likes, it’s what the majority of buyers like,” concludes Donovan.

PAINTING THE TOWN
Sometimes the smallest invitations lead to the grandest opportunities. In 2012, Photech Environmental Solutions, a company that collects and recycles hazardous waste, was requested to greatly increase their recycled paint processing from Stewardship Ontario; the organization which operated the paint program at that time. Photech Environmental Solutions quickly found a way to revitalize the donated and unwanted paint into a fresh, new middle-grade paint guaranteed to impress with its good quality and affordable price. “It was a new opportunity for us and we welcomed the challenge, states Jillian Berswick, Marketing and Sales Manager at Loop Recycled Products.
FROM THE BOXES TO THE LABELS, IT ALL COMES FROM
recycled PRODUCTS.
It wasn’t long before Loop Recycled Products was launched. “We amped up production of the paint, designed a label, and pitched it to Walmart,” says Berswick. The popularity of the eco-friendly paint took off and shortly thereafter, Loop Recycled Products acquired a second facility for processing the paint. Recently, Loop Recycled Products and Photech combined their three facilities into one location on Chippawa Creek Road: the previous PolyOne building. “By amalgamating, we have been able to improve productivity. We now have more space and capacity to make production more efficient and meet the demands of our growing business,” says Berswick. For the past four years Loop Recycled Products has been turning your leftover paint into an intermediate level product. “In terms of quality, it is a combination of low-grade and high-grade paints,” says Berswick. “Recycled products are sometimes met with criticism. Not with Loop, the quality will exceed your expectations. For the first time you will get more than what you pay for in the recycled world.” Their first brand, Port Weller, is named after their old stomping grounds and has a, “small town craft brew sort of a feel.” It is available on-line through Amazon.ca for the price of $34.99 and $36.00 through Lowes.ca. The Blue Moose Label is exclusive to Giant Tiger customers and offered in five different colours. One gallon of Blue Moose retails for $15.00. Lastly, the Loop brand of paint, their signature, is available in 11 different nature inspired colours and sells for $17.88 at Walmart locations across Canada. A five gallon tub of Loop contractor’s white paint retails at $63.00. A significant difference when compared to the big box retailers whose prices range from $80.00 to $92.00. Along with these three different brands of paint, Loop Recycled Products also produces paint for private and exclusive clients. During full swing production, Loop Recycled Products Inc. employs 60 individuals. As the paint enters the facility, it is assessed for quality and sorted. From there, the paint is made into
feed stock and undergoes approximately 30 specifications during a quality control process. Every colour and batch is approved by the president, Josh Wiwcharyk, before it is packaged, labelled, and distributed to retailers. Loop Recycled Products has an ample selection of paint colours they manufacture, however, availability depends on what is donated at the time of fabrication. “If we receive pinks then we can produce more taupes,” says Berswick. “This season our grey colour is very popular.” “We work closely with municipalities to collect the paint. This year we are excited to be working with the Regional Municipality of Niagara and keeping Niagara’s waste management within the Region itself,” states Berswick. The Region of Niagara is taking steps to make hazardous waste disposal easier and more convenient for citizens of the Niagara Region. Instead of the previous method of holding hazardous waste drop off days, three new depots will be opening soon across the Region where residents can bring paint and other household hazardous materials. One of the interesting things about Loop Paint is that it is premixed as opposed to the traditional way of adding tint to a base and then it is mixed together. This “grab and go” paint eliminates the need for long lineups at the paint counter and assists in keeping final costs down. From start to finish, everything Loop Recycled Products does in terms of production, considers the carbon footprint as their mission statement focuses on being environmentally sustainable. “From the boxes to the labels, it all comes from recycled products,” says Berswick. “We also crush the used paint cans and ship them out to other recycling facilities to be made into recycled products.” Loop Recycled Products works with a variety of organizations including: universities, industries, and municipalities to ensure their waste is disposed of properly and turned into a new product. Community involvement is a key aspect of the Loop Recycled Products motto. “We often donate paint to community groups and non-profit organizations including: Red Roof Retreat, David Suzuki Foundation, and the City of St. Catharines,” says Berswick. From creating local jobs to giving back to the community, Loop Recycled Products demonstrates the good that can be achieved when household hazardous waste is properly disposed of. “We easily show the life cycle of your waste. In a few weeks to months the paint you disposed of is made into a new product and it is back on the shelves,” says Berswick. What started out as a small company recycling hazardous waste has grown into a booming success. A success story that not many are aware of. There are no other facilities in the area that can master what Loop Recycled Paint has done in a short period of time. “We are always looking for more ways to divert hazardous waste from our landfills,” says Berswick. Stay tuned, Loop Recycled Products has more good things to come. For more information on Loop Recycled Products visit looppaint.ca.
