Welcome to

the December 2015 edition He who has not Christmas in his heart will never find it under a tree.

Roy L. Smith The Christmas issue already and the last magazine of 2015. It doesn’t seem like a year has passed since I was last writing my Christmas magazine introduction! Once again I am totally disorganised, not a present has been bought, nor a card written, and although I bought my Christmas cards back in August, I have no idea where I put them! Never mind it will all get done, it always does. As always I will be trying to support my local shops in the run up to Christmas. Details of many such shops and services can be found within these pages and I am sure that all of them appreciate you considering local companies not just at Christmas but all through the year. Finding ways of diverting even just a tiny bit of your spend to Independents is an excellent way of ensuring that our local communities retain their individuality and that we have a large choice of local shops and services for years to come. I am looking forward to relaxing and spending some quality time with my family for a few days between Christmas and New Year, and I am very lucky that I am able to do this. I know that there are a great many people who will be working hard throughout Christmas keeping our hospitals open, caring for our elderly, serving in our armed forces, keeping public transport running and providing numerous other essential services. The January 2016 issue will be delivered to you late December. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Thursday 10th December. December is the month that I squeeze a month’s work into 3 weeks while also preparing for Christmas and my calendar for December is already filling up with extra social events and annual commitments, so once again I do ask that you endeavour to get your items to me on time. Wishing you and your family and friends a very Happy Christmas. Enjoy the seasonal festivities and I will be back in a months’ time with your first magazine of 2016!

Best wishes, Paula x

Are you choosing your primary school? Come and visit us at Misson Primary before you make your choice… ...we are a small school with a big offering and a warm welcome. th

With the deadline for Primary School Applications fast approaching on the 15 January, we invite you to come and view Misson Primary School and consider us as a choice for your child. We welcome families from a wide area and we have an open door policy, visit us at a time that suits you and see the school in action. With small year groups averaging 15, Misson offers a unique small school setting for your child. Rated consistently Good by Ofsted, we focus not just on teaching and learning, but on those other ‘special things’ that make up childhood. Pantomime visits, swimming lessons, music and gardening club are all part of our school life and just as important to us as formal education. But don't take our word for it, come and see for yourself. Step through our doors and feel the warmth of our school. See the older children nurture the youngest and experience the happy place that is Misson Primary School. We look forward to seeing you soon. John Birch, Headteacher

THE PLANS ARE IN CALLING ALL MISSON RESIDENTS – HAVE YOUR SAY ON THE MISSON MILL REDEVELOPMENT. Influencing the redevelopment of Misson Mill During the past two months members of the Misson Neighbourhood Planning Steering Group have met with Bassetlaw District Council Planning Department, the current Misson Mill Landowner and his representatives to discuss a joint approach to the redevelopment of Misson Mill. Members of the Steering Group outlined the conclusions that had arisen from the consultations with Misson School, Misson Young People and the local community including; • Retain and enhance business opportunities – particularly small businesses • An opportunity to improve the approach to the village when travelling from Austerfield • Make the corner of the site safer for traffic and pedestrians – create a landscape feature, wide landscape and the pavement set back into the site • Incorporate Retail/Café/Community Hall to serve businesses and general public • Groups of Housing plots to be set back from the road maintaining a rural density • Create a central green space – breaking up the housing plots and different styles – avoid one large mass of similar design of housing • Ample car parking for more than one car per residential plot Following the meeting the architect attended a Steering Group meeting and presented three proposals for discussion. A further proposal was tabled by the Steering Group that also incorporated all of the requirements summarised above

An opportunity to influence the new development

developed further and to comment on all of the options presented. An open day has been arranged for Sunday 6th December 2015 between 11am and 3pm in Misson Community Centre. Members of the Steering Group will be there to answer any questions and to describe each of the options. Over 80 people attended the last meeting and as it is such an important section of the Neighbourhood Plan we are hoping more people will attend and vote. It has been agreed with the landowner that whichever option is preferred will be worked up further and form the basis of redevelopment.

Are we there yet? The Steering Group has been working on the plan for over twelve months and during that time has consulted with as many people as possible resulting in a basis for future planning policy for the parish of Misson. During the next six months the draft plan will be presented to Bassetlaw District Council to be examined and then the conclusions put to each business and Parishoner in Misson to vote upon its implementation and set the planning framework for Misson for the next twenty years. At a time when Government is setting so much new legislation it is a welcome opportunity for the local community to determine their own future for the evolution of Misson. If you would like any further details contact David Hobson on 01302 710680 or dhobson@hobsonhague.co.uk

“The Oven Gloves Are Off!” The Misson Community Action Group welcomed the Lancashire Nanas on October 24th for a peaceful rally held the proposed fracking site in Misson Springs in support of the community’s fight against fracking. The Nanas later gave an inspiring presentation at the village Community Centre. A recent survey showed that 82% of Misson residents are against the development. The gathering was well represented by Frack Free groups from all over Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire, South Yorkshire and Lancashire. The Nanas are a determined group of people that stand up for what they believe in and visibly object to projects and industries such as fracking that could harm communities and the environment.

from the traffic, drilling noise, vibration and lighting. If the site eventually develops into full scale fracking and gas production then there are major concerns regarding the safety of the principal aquifer nearby that provides a large area of the East Midlands and Doncaster Borough with its drinking water. Air pollution and the possibility of leaks and spillage of contaminated wastewater may have drastic effects on the surface groundwater supplying the aquifer and surrounding agricultural farmland. There is increasing evidence emerging in research and reports that fracking represents a significant risk to public health and the environment

There comes a time in many of our lives when the need for care in our old age becomes a reality. If you have assets exceeding £23,250 the cost of care will need to be met by yourself. For some, this means selling the family home. However, many people who are in this position are not aware that funding may be available for them.

Will the NHS pay for my care? If the need for care primarily is a health need, YES In these circumstances the NHS are obligated to meet the care costs of the individual in full. This funding is known as continuing healthcare, and is sometimes abbreviated to CHC funding.

How can I receive this funding? It is difficult to secure continuing healthcare. Providing this funding to individuals is incredibly expensive for the NHS, in the same way it is incredibly expensive to pay privately. As a result it is regularly the case that the NHS attempt to apply a higher bar to satisfy than is set out in law and in the Department of Health literature pertaining to continuing healthcare. Many people who should be receiving in full to meet the cost of their care are not. It is estimated there are 100,000 in the UK presently paying for care when these costs should be met by continuing healthcare.

What can I do to find out if I am eligible for this funding? At Guardian Continuing Healthcare we have a high success rate of securing continuing healthcare for our clients. If you or your relative is paying for care and you believe there is a health need, perhaps because they suffer from Parkinson’s disease, dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, then contact an expert member of our team today to discuss your options and find out how we can assist.

Misson & Springs WI The clocks had gone back and the long winter evenings were already setting in, as we met up for our October meeting. This has traditionally been a members’ evening and this time we had decided on a craft theme, giving an opportunity to share skills and think about ideas for Christmas. As always, it was a most agreeable way to spend a couple of hours, and we were all able to take home something we had made - a small felt reindeer to hang on the tree, a napkin rink with a festive theme, a small beautifully decorated gift box and plenty of ideas for turning our Japanese folded patchwork square into quilts or bags, and one member was able to teach another the beginnings of crochet. Anita Love from Phoenix cards had her excellent display of cards and gift wrappings and she joined in with our activities with her usual enthusiasm. On 25th November, we shall again be having a craft theme, when Sue Hawkmoon from Hawkmoon Crafts in Brigg will work with us demonstrating feltmaking. We do not meet in December but will be ready with a new programme in January, starting with Margaret Byrne from Bawtry talking about her travels in India. As always, our activities will be accompanied by an endless supply of refreshments, including homemade cake. We always have time for a chat and would love you to join us. We meet on the last Wednesday of every month at 7.30 pm at the Community Centre, Vicar Lane, Misson; don’t hesitate to turn up, or phone our secretary, Lynda Redfern on 07796975578 for any further information. community 2015 will be remembered for good and bad reasons. We have seen an increase in animals requiring help and re-homing for various reasons. This could be that family’s situations alter and they can no longer take care of their animals. Marriage breakups, people going into rented accommodation, losing their jobs when finances then become difficult. Also people going into hospital. All can contribute to the reasons why we are full to overflowing. However this is becoming really hard for us as we only have so much kennel space If you are considering adopting a family pet please consider your life style and the costs involved, obviously life changes and no-one knows what is around the corner. This is why for some people it is important to take out pet insurance. There are some good companies out there, but always check the small print, and always ask if the policy you are interested in is a life policy. At our Sanctuary we have some beautiful dogs, puppies, cats and kittens, various breeds and cross breeds all looking for their forever loving homes. Previously I talked about Roxy and Bruno the inseparable dogs that we needed to re-home together, well they have now found 2 special people to love and take care of them. Our staff were very emotional when they went to their new home together. We are told they are doing well and looking forward to their Christmas dinner. We have quite a few fundraising events going on over the December period. We will be in Doncaster town centre on the 5th and 20th December please come along and say hello. We love to listen to all the stories you have about your pets. We will have some of our residents with us, so we are hoping for dry days. We are also collecting outside Pets at Home over the North Bridge in December (if it’s cold we will be

Finding a forever home inside) the staff are always lovely and very welcoming. A big thank you to the lady that arranged a Pampered Chef Party for us, this was a huge success and a really fun night. There was lots of tasty food to sample and we raised money too which was a bonus. We hope everyone has a very special fun Christmas, and a big thank you to everyone that donates to our Sanctuary. If you would like to contribute to help keep our Sanctuary open please just look at the website on the first page just click donate, every penny is greatly appreciated. Or if you would like to pop extra black bags, wash powder or washing up liquid in your trolley when you are shopping these are the things we use the most off. It takes £600 per day to stay open and our vets bills for a year are in excess of £40,000 unbelievable I know but these are the facts. Can I say a big thank you to our Managers, kennel staff and volunteers that give up most of their Christmas to make sure all our dogs and cats are fed and enjoy their Christmas too. All it takes now is to wish everyone a Happy Christmas and Peaceful New Year. Bye for now

She is a little cat with a huge personality. Extremely affectionate but with a naughty streak ! She loves to play and is always purring round your feet for a fuss or a game. Unfortunately she doesn’t like to share and wouldn’t tolerate another cat or a dog in her new home. If you would like a cat that’s loving but with bags of character then look no further. Here she is !!!!!

Good with cats: Only Lucy Lived with children: Yes Both male , 18 months old, Eric and Ernie originally came into care as babies with their Mum and were adopted as youngsters. They have lived a very happy life with their owners and existing cat, Lucy. Unfortunately their Mum has had an accident which means that she is unable to care for them any more. It was a heartbreaking decision but one that was best for the boys and Lucy. Eric and Ernie are very close so a home together is essential. It would be a dream come true if they could all go together. Could you offer these guys the home they deserve? TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 744278

Pastor’s Page One of the downsides of living in South Yorkshire is that we are a long way from the coast, the nearest beach being at Cleethorpes which is over an hour away. However, come Christmas Day I am very thankful that we are so far from the sea. As a church pastor I know I would be bullied if we were in Redcar (100 miles from Bawtry), Lowestoft (165 miles) Brighton (225 miles) or Porthcawl (230 miles). I say bullied because each of these places have a tradition that I would very much not want to join in with; a swim in the sea on Christmas morning, and ministers are often “encouraged” to do that sort of thing. Now, I know that everyone who takes part in a Christmas Swim says it feels great, not nearly as painful as the thought of it, and that it’s really energising. They also talk about the happy, community-minded atmosphere with everyone enjoying not only the experience but also the presence of the other crazy people; apparently there is a lot of laughing. Some people find themselves hooked and the early 22

Christmas dip becomes one of their festive traditions. As I say, we live a long way from the sea and so I can be confident that my church will not be daring/ bribing/ dragging me to go and join the swimmers. I will be quite happy sitting in my woolly jumper next to a log fire and with a glass of something in my hand. However, I shall not be doing that before taking part in our most important family Christmas tradition – going to church to celebrate the birth of Jesus. For some people the idea of going to church (I say “church”, in our case we meet in the New Hall) fills them with dread – “How do you dress?” (however you’re comfortable) “Will I look silly?” (no more than anyone else) “Isn’t it really formal and antiquated?” (no, definitely not) – but, almost without exception, visitors leave saying they were very pleased they came; they received a warm welcome, got to sing along to lively, contemporary music and listened to an interesting and engaging talk. Some of them enjoy it so much they come back again and again. So, this Christmas morning you are excused from swimming in the sea but I encourage you to go along to church – it’s not nearly as cold as you think. I wish you a joyful Christmas and a peaceful 2016.

TIS THE SEASON TO GO SKIING!... There can be a seasonal slant to the work of a Physiotherapist and the winter months see an influx of skiing related issues. But hitting the slopes doesn’t have to lead to trouble. Here are some tips for a happy trip… Get SKI fit Even if you are usually fit, it’s important to recognise that you still probably only ski for 1 or 2 weeks a year and you will need to tweak your normal fitness routine accordingly. If your baseline fitness is poor, you really must address this 12 weeks before your trip.

Call on 01302 511755 or email info@blizardphysiotherapy.co.uk Blizard Physiotherapy Limited, Bircotes DN11 8DE

Poor fitness leads to fatigue and fatigue leads to injury. Most skiing injuries occur after 3pm on the 3rd day of a trip – when fatigue reaches a peak. You need to work on your cardiovascular fitness by doing exercises that increase your heart rate (running/cycling) and on your lower limb strength by doing squats/lunges/step ups. Treat pre existing injuries If you have any pre existing complaints it is a good idea to deal with these before your holiday. Skiing is unlikely to help! Equipment Don’t borrow ski gear – it isn’t tailored specifically to you and could well be past it’s best! Buy or hire your equipment where your height, weight and ability can be taken into account (and no fibbing!) Apres ski Skiing holidays really aren’t the best place for a booze up. Alcohol affects your ability to assess risk accurately and leads to dehydration making it difficult for tissues to function and recover properly.

Farewell and Moving Forward It was with real sadness on the 16th of October 2015, that parishioners bade farewell to father John MacNamee who retired as Parish Priest after 27 years’ service within Christ the King, Rossington and Holy Family, Finningley. The occasion was marked by a Celebration Mass and presentation, followed by a buffet in the Rosary Hall. The evening was well attended by parishioners, priests, friends, family, staff (past and present) of St Joseph’s Catholic Voluntary Academy and also the Rt Rev Ralph Heskett Bishop of Hallam. We all had a wonderful evening and it was a fitting way to wish Father MacNamee a long and happy retirement. Moving forward the people of the Parish would like to make everyone aware that even though Father MacNamee has retired it is still ‘business as usual’ within our churches and mass times continue as normal: 6:00 p.m. Saturday Evening Mass at Church of the Holy Family, Finningley. (The church and parking for parishioners can be accessed through a security barrier which is situated on Fountains Court, Second Avenue, Finningley. – Please be aware that the area surrounding the Holy Family Church is designated as being ‘High Security’ and as such parking is strictly prohibited other than within the designated area for the church). 11:00 a.m. Sunday Morning Mass at Christ the King, Skipworth Gardens, Rossington So if you’ve been away for a little while, or are interested

Season for soup

by Feast of Bawtry

Butternut squash soup with crispy sage leaves (Gluten Free) As autumn is fading and winter is approaching we see a distinct change in our customers eating habits! A sandwich for lunch just won’t cut it anymore, everybody wants something warm and comforting....everybody wants soup! This is a wonderful time of year for seasonal vegetables which make the most delicious soups. At little cost and with minimal effort soups are low fat, low calorie option for stuffing our bodies with those vitamins and minerals we need to see us through the long winter nights. Try the recipe for our butternut squash and sage soup, it is simply devine. Warming and flavoursome

you can make a batch and if there is any leftover you can use a good quality plastic container, which is clearly labelled with the date and contents, and freeze it. Butternut squash are a favourite of ours. They can be added to stews, pasta, risotto, soups and curries. To ensure your squash is ripe and ready to use select one which is firm to the touch. If stored in a cool but not refrigerated place, they will keep for up to two months at a time. When scraping the seeds from the squash save them and lightly toast them in the oven for a delicious snack. Add salt or cajun spice if you prefer a little flavour. Mums tip...Butternut squash, cooked plainly makes a great weaning food for babies.

You will need... 1 tbsp olive oil 1 large onion 1 garlic clove 1 butternut squash (approx 1 kg) desseded and chopped 3 tbsp dry sherry (not essential...don’t panic!) 500ml vegetable stock (Gluten Free if necessary) 1 tsp chopped sage A handful of small whole sage leaves

1

Heat the oil in a large pan and fry your chopped onions for approximately 5 minutes or until soft

2

Add your garlic and squash and cook for 5 more minutes

3 4

A hand blender or food processor

Pour in the stock and the sherry (if you have it) add in the chopped sage and place the lid on the pan, leave to simmer for 20 minutes or until the squash is tender. Using a hand blender blitz until the mixture is completely smooth.

method

5

Add boiling water and blitz again if you need to thin the soup a little.

6

Cover the base of a small pan with oil and heat. Drop the sage leaves into the oil and fry until crispy. Cook them in small batches, removing each one to drain on kitchen paper. These can be made in advance if you require and will keep crisp for several hours. To serve ensure the soup is piping hot and ladle into bowls, arranging the sage leaves on top and seasoning with black pepper

Tickhill and Bawtry Probus Club 20th Anniversary Luncheon On Thursday 29th November approximately 60 members of Tickhill and Bawtry Probus Club enjoyed a rather long lunch at the Millstone to celebrate the club’s 20th anniversary. Probus nationally was founded in the 1960’s but did not come to Tickhill until 1995 as a result of a chance remark overheard by Dennis Healey that there were several clubs for ladies in the town but none for men. Dennis set up a meeting to gauge interest and advertised it in several local papers. Over 40 men turned up and as a result Tickhill and Bawtry Probus Club was founded. 9 out of 10 of the remaining Founder members attended the lunch. In his speech after the meal, President Bas James said that, unlike some other Probus clubs Tickhill had been successful over the years with a current membership of over 80. Whilst many factors contributed to its success Bas said he thought the main one was that the club had always been a friendly one, always ready to welcome new members, always ready to support members during periods of illness or other difficulty. The members present heartily endorsed this. Altogether a very successful day made possible by the efforts of Steve Payne and his team together with the Millstone staff. We thank them all. T

Bonfire Night It was great to see so many people attending the bonfire and fireworks at the Cricket Club on 7th November. The record crowd responded brilliantly to the quality of the fireworks and with superb support from the bars, the barbecue and the novelty sales outlets a good time was had by all. Many thanks to the Cricket Club, the volunteers who helped in the running of the event and everyone who supported the evening with kind donations. We apologise to any local residents who may have had difficulty getting their car off their drive due to poor parking on the road outside – this will be considered in our plans for next year, though there may be little we can do. Royal British Legion Wreaths were laid following Remembrance Day Services in Tickhill, Wadworth, Harworth, Bawtry and Rossington. Christmas Draw Tickets for our Grand Christmas Draw are on sale in many shops and pubs around the area. As usual there will be at least 50 prizes including a Wilfreda City Break for 2, a flat screen television, a £100 food hamper and a £100 fuel voucher. The draw will be made at Tickhill Cricket Club at 9pm on December 15th. If anyone wishes to help on the Christmas Float please contact us via Facebook or our website. We are also selling Magic Reindeer Food for the little ones to leave out on Christmas Eve. It will be available in Tickhill at KSM, Fentons Butchers, the library and a number of other outlets and look out for it in other local areas!! President Steve Radford and all the members of Tickhill and District Lions Club would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 744278

Update from Councillor

Rachael Blake Alcohol, footpaths and voting with a difference have been just three of the areas that I have been working on this month – more about this later on, but firstly an update on issues that I mentioned in last month’s update. The tree issues that I mentioned last time, following discussions with DMBCs tree team, work to improve certain areas is progressing, with some work scheduled in for the spring for crowning and lifting work.

Bus services in Austerfield and Bawtry

Footpaths at Market Hill

To progress the lack of a bus service for Austerfield residents, I have met with DMBC’s Cabinet Member for Transport and Highways. Also, a very important consultation has been launched this month by South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, who are looking to form a Doncaster Bus Partnership. The proposals for routes do not affect the current service in Bawtry, or the 127. All bus users are encouraged to complete the questionnaire but is particularly important for Austerfield residents to respond. The questionnaires can be completed online at travelsouthyorkshire.com/dbp or paper copies are available from the Interchange. I have paper copies of the questionnaire and will have them at my surgeries, or I am happy to deliver you a copy if that would be easier. Bus services are important to many people, therefore could you please take the time to complete a questionnaire. There are drop in sessions taking place in December; 9th at the Civic Offices from 2-5 and 10th from 3-6 at Rossington Miners Welfare. The consultation closes on 18 December and paper questionnaires have to be returned by 16 December.

When I was out canvassing before I was elected, the poor state of footpaths at Market Hill was a concern that was raised by many residents. Who has responsibility for maintaining them has been the problem that has not been resolved for many years so I was pleased to join Bawtry Town Councillors and DMBC Highways to agree the process for bringing the pavements up to a proper standard and then agreeing ongoing maintenance. I will keep you updated on how this progresses.

DMBC Funding for voluntary groups Doncaster Council is delighted to announce the creation of the Doncaster Voluntary & Community Support Fund, offering grants up to £30,000 to eligible organisations within the borough of Doncaster. Up until March 2018, the Programme will support the delivery of the Council’s Corporate Plan priorities by funding suitable third sector projects. For further information please look at the DMBC website or call 01302 736000.

Reinstatement of PACT meetings PACT meetings are residents’ opportunity to meet with South Yorkshire Police (SYP) and partner organisations to raise their concerns and work with the police to agree priority areas for the ward. In our ward, unlike other wards we haven’t had a sit down meeting, instead it has taken the form of a drop in sometimes in a venue other times at Market Hill for example. I was pleased to receive information last week from SYP that a sit down monthly meeting will be held once a month in different locations throughout our policing area. I hope to have details of the meetings in the near future, so will include them in my next update.

Cumulative Impact Policy for Bawtry This has been included in DMBCs Licensing Policy and is awaiting ratification at Full Council at the end of November. I will provide further details of what this means in my next update.

Year 6 at Mayflower - Democracy Session This month I spent a lovely few hours with the wonderful years 6’s talking about elections. Some children were candidates, others took on the task as counting agents counting the votes, and another group were the allimportant electorate. Prior to announcing the results the atmosphere was tense, the children and teachers said they had thoroughly enjoyed their experience and the newly elected Councillor and his supporters escorted the grown up Councillor back to the office to say goodbye. Thank you Year 6 for being so interested, interesting and enthusiastic.

My surgeries 2nd Friday of every month - Bawtry Community Library from 10am – 12pm (in the back room) Austerfield – I attend every Austerfield Parish Council meeting and can arrange to see you before or after the meeting and in my next update I will provide information about additional surgeries at the Austerfield Centre. Tel: 07976896563/01302 710251: Twitter @CllrRachaelB : Email: Rachael.blake@doncaster.gov.uk Thank you for reading this and thank very much for all your support in 2015. I hope you have a happy and peaceful Christmas. Kind Regards

garden view

By Rachel Leverton

Which Christmas Tree? When we were kids my brother christened our rather sorry old artificial tree the Silver Lurch, on account of its colour and list. Artificial trees have improved enormously since then but most gardeners do prefer the real thing. There’s something magical about bringing a bit of the outside indoors at this time of year. Unfortunately trees were not meant to live in centrally-heated sitting rooms. It puts them under a lot of stress. So which trees survive Christmas best? Well there are several species available to the British public. The main choices are between pines, spruces and firs. The traditional Christmas tree is Picea Abies, the Norway Spruce. Most popular they may be but they are actually least suited to the conditions inside the average home. Spruces are much more prone to shed needles than firs or pines. Pinus Sylvestris and Pinus Contorta are respectively better known as the Scots Pine and the Lodgepole Pine. Their longer needles hold well but do make hanging decorations a bit tricky for small fingers, which is worth noting if your children like to help. If that’s not an issue the widely spaced branches show off larger baubles very well. The Corsican Pine (pinus Nigra Laricio) is not as common but has similar properties. Firs are the best choice for a British Christmas. If you want the best, and you can find one, plump for Abies Noblilis, the Noble Fir. In its perfect form it’s hard to beat: uniform in shape with more open

branches on the top, its flat, short needles have amazing retention properties. It’s trickier to grow well than most other trees so expect to pay a bit of a premium. The Nordman Fir (Abies Nordmanniana) runs the Noble Fir a close second. It is easily available now as many tree growers invested heavily in the species. They are generally cheaper than the Noble Fir so a good choice if cost is an issue. The Fraser Fir and the lemon-scented Douglas Fir are also worth seeking out. Once you have your tree, make a fresh cut across its trunk and give it a good drink of tepid water before bringing it inside. Secure it properly in a specially made base which is the right size for your tree! A toppled six foot tree, a couple of gallons of water and a hundred or so baubles make a seriously large For true eco-friendliness mess...I know buy British-grown trees. this to be true Most councils offer a Christmas because several tree shredding service. The Christmases shreddings are then composted. ago I was the person clearing Artificial trees are generally non-biodegradable. it all up at two in the morning... don’t make my Christmas tree farms act as a carbon sink, fixing mistake! Merry environmental carbon dioxide Christmas!

Christmas Lost for words!

Dearr Friends, December is a month of celebrations that are centred on Christmas and New Year. As much as the celebrations continue into the night and sometimes for days, I wonder if we sometimes find time to reflect on the reason(s) for these celebrations. My local dialect has named December ‘Mumu’ which can be translated as ‘dumb’. In other words, the events that bring reasons for the celebrations may amaze us to the extent that we may be lost for words or ‘dumb’ for hours or even days. Lost for words? Yes! Imagine you being Mary, the mother of Jesus. How would you have treated the news of the birth of your firstborn from an angel you have never seen or met? What about Joseph? An innocent bachelor who only wanted to marry the girl he loved but had to be dragged into the mystery of the virgin birth? Lost for words? Yes! If you were the innkeeper, how would you feel after realising that the couple you disregarded and handed them your sheep pen to sleep in, instead of a bed and breakfast room, was the couple God decided to use to bring the Saviour into the world? Lost for words? Yes! Imagine that you were a shepherd who had been written off by society and are only needed when it was time for the temple sacrifices. You are only important for the time when someone wants to buy your sheep or goat and sacrifice it at the temple. I wonder how you would have felt when an angel of God appeared to you in the bright sky on Christmas morning and asked you to hurry and visit the newly born babe, the Saviour of the world. Lost for words? Yes! If you were a wise man how would you have felt when you realised that upon all your wisdom and knowledge you needed the visit of God’s angel and a guiding star to lead you to the baby who had been born as Saviour of the world. 46

Lost for words? Yes, Herod was! Imagine how Herod felt when the wise men told him the news about the birth of the king of the world who will save us from our sins. I wonder how he would think about his authority in the province of Judea in the coming days or years. Lost for words? Yes, I am! I am lost for words because God loved me so much that he brought his only son into the world at Christmas to live and die for me. I wonder how you feel as well realising that the nativity plays, carol services and the celebrations are not all about shopping and parties but God sending his only son into the world to save you from sin. As part of the celebrations of Christmas, the church in your local community, which is always lost for words because of what God has done for this world, is putting up services and nativity plays in December to celebrate the mystery of Jesus’ birth. It is also celebrating the birth of a new year as we look forward to experiencing new things and growth in our lives in the coming year. I wonder if I can use this opportunity to invite you, as well as your family and friends, to look out on your local church notice boards and in the local magazines for where and when you can join in our celebrations. You are always welcome. Have a merry Christmas and a happy New Year celebration. God bless you. Yours sincerely,

TMVC Vulcan report On Friday 29th October 2015, Tickhill & District Male Voice Choir had the honour of performing at Hangar 3, Robin Hood Airport (the home of the only airworthy Vulcan bomber) in association with “Vulcan to the Sky Trust”. Standing in front of XH558 “Spirit of Great Britain” (whose final flight was recorded two days earlier), amongst members of Mexborough, Thorne and Rossington Male Voice Choirs and alongside members of Doncaster Ladies Choir, members were proud to perform with the joint male voices singing 11 items, the ladies singing six items along with two items performed jointly with male and female choirs. The concert was concluded with a “Last Night of the Proms” section involving the joint choirs and the audience of 400. Our conductors for the evening were Gwyneth Platts and Allen Mason and we were accompanied by Elizabeth Cooke, Geoffrey Cox, Neil Platt, Delyse Rockliff and Janet Skinner. The event was compered by Peter Hannam. Members and followers of the choirs were treated to the history of the Avro Vulcan bombers, which despite having a very long service life were only used in anger once, during the Falklands War. At that time they were brought out of recent retirement and used to bomb the runway at Port Stanley, making it inoperable to the Argentine forces. Also, during the interval and after the conclusion of the concert everyone was given the opportunity to get a close up view of the aircraft. Our sincere thanks go to the “Vulcan to the Sky Trust” for their cooperation in hosting this concert which was brought about following the Music Workshop with James Sills, organised by ourselves in March of this year. Having invited other local male voices to join with us in the workshop it was decided to arrange a joint concert of the choirs involved and also involve Doncaster Ladies Choir. What a privilege it was to line up in front of the mighty aircraft, especially as she has just been retired from flying so recently. Our apologies go to any of our supporters who were unable to obtain tickets for this event, but numbers had to be restricted and demand was high, including from members of the Trust. We will be kept extremely busy over the coming Christmas period. The choir will hold their Christmas Concert on Saturday 5th December at Tickhill Methodist Church commencing at 7.30pm, tickets are available – get yours now! We will also be performing at Doncaster Golf Club on Saturday 12th December (private function), the Nine Lessons and Carols service at Bassettlaw Hospital Chapel at 7.00pm on Wednesday 16th December and singing carols at Doncaster Tesco Extra on Saturday 19th December from 10.00am to 12.00noon.

Retford Ramblers Do you know someone who likes to walk or perhaps is looking to take up a new hobby? Then why not give them a Ramblers Gift Membership for Christmas. Ramblers Membership gives access to hundreds of led walks not only in the local area but across the whole of Britain. The Retford Group of the Ramblers Association is small and friendly and are always pleased to welcome new members. The current Programme of Walks will end with the Boxing Day Walk which will be a leisurely morning walk in the local area. Other walks in December are 6th 7 miles around Clayworth, Gringley and Wiseton 13th 6 miles around Shireoaks and Rhodesia 20th is a Wander around Wheatley Further details from Mike (The Secretary) 01427 880984 Or email retford.ramblers@gmail.com T

Prospective new members are always welcome to join us at our practice sessions on Monday evenings in the Schoolroom, Tickhill Methodist Church. No experience is necessary, ability to read music is optional. Tickhill & District Male Voice Choir would like to wish everyone a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. T 48

With this community ethos in mind we are also proud to support ‘Small Business Saturday’ which takes place on 5th December. Please spread the word and invite friends and family to pop along to our town – it’s a great opportunity to finish off the shopping that you didn’t manage to do at our fantastic Christmas event. On that note, sincere thanks must go to Bawtry Town Council for their support and their donation to provide the traditional Carousel that so many enjoyed. And thanks also to Rebecca Dickenson (Bawtry Retail Association Chair), Tori Oldridge and all members of the BRA Christmas steering group who worked hard to put together such a fantastic event. We are delighted that a further defibrillator has been installed at China Rose restaurant and staff recently received training from Yorkshire Air Ambulance. This means that we now have several defibrillators in the town so should the need arise we are well placed to offer vital, early medical support.

As a retail organisation we have had another great year. We now have over 70 members giving us a real depth of experience and variety of businesses. We would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Don’t forget that you can find out lots of information from our website www.visitbawtry.com, follow us on Twitter @visitbawtry and like us on Facebook / bawtryretailassociation T

Bawtry Phoenix Theatre Company. Our Next Production is: ‘Spring and Port Wine’ By Bill Naughton From December 5th to December 12th 2015. Set in the 1950’s the play concerns the Crompton family and the attempts of the father, Rafe, to continue to assert his authority and influence as his children, Florence, Hilda, Harold and Wilfred, approach adulthood. His wife Daisy continues to be the mainstay of communication in the family as they live in an industrial town which is in transformation while helping their wastrel neighbour Betsy Jane and welcoming Florence’s suitor Arthur into the household. A finely written play, it continues to entertain and illustrates the beckoning future and fears of young people growing into adulthood, their questioning and rebellion and their place in the lives of their long suffering parents. Tickets are available from the new Box Office on 01302 710825 or visit www.bawtrytheatre.co.uk The Box Office will be open every Monday and Thursday 7.30pm to 9.30pm. Outside these hours an answer machine will be in operation. T

China Rose will also once again be inviting everyone to buy a wooden heart tree decoration this Christmas for just £2.00, write a message on it to a loved one and hang in on their ‘Remembrance’ tree in their car park. All proceeds will be split between PACT (Parents’ Association of Children with Tumours and Leukaemia) 54

Bawtry Town Council - DECEMBER 2015 Once again the council finds itself defending its actions from within. The council takes decisions as a corporate body in a democratic manner. It is also the law as it applies to local government. To reaffirm regarding the council changing the charge periods for Market Hill. This is being negotiated with our partners Excel Parking Services, which is only right and proper so that we are not in breach of contract. We are in negotiation with Excel Parking Services as to how we implement the councils wishes, within the existing contract, and we will agree the date of implementation in due course.

Remembrance Sunday There was an excellent turnout for the service at the Methodist Church which was attended by Councillors Young, Winter and Lukey. Following a parade through the grounds of Bawtry Hall to the War Memorial where many wreaths were laid including one from the council and the people of Bawtry.

Neighbourhood Plan The Town Council has now received funding from central Government to progress the plan. Consultation with residents continues; many thanks to the residents who have already responded. A further major consultation exercise is planned for early next year. In the meantime, questionnaires remain available at Bawtry Community Library and may be completed there.

Litter and Dog Fouling MSG (Memorial Sports Ground) and the Wharf Street play area is becoming an ongoing problem. Both of these areas are used by children therefore dog owners must take responsibility to clear up their dogs mess. As such we will conduct a campaign to address this poor behaviour from some of our residents by improved signage and activities which will change the culture of dog fouling and litter in general in our beautiful town. The council intends to work with others to improve this situation in the near future. We would welcome any suggestions from Bawtry residents as to how to improve this situation.

CIP

MSG (Memorial Sports Ground)

We have applied to DMBC Licensing Committee for Bawtry to have a designated Community Impact Policy (CIP). We asked for this so we can ensure that Bawtry remains as it is – a great town! This was agreed and now goes to full council for approval. If approved, it will mean that the licences will be subject to more stringent scrutiny in the future.

We have changed the contract for grass cutting on the MSG and have now awarded it to the Cricket Club so that the area is more suitably treated and fit for purpose.

Planning

Residents, businesses and members of the public are welcome to attend our meetings and there is a 15 minute time frame for specific questions to be put to council. Please come along and get involved.

The council has been active in responding to many planning submissions with local knowledge to DMBC.

Market Hill Market Hill will be the site for the Town Council’s Carol service on Christmas Eve which is a very well attended event and enjoyed by all. There has been a site meeting planned with DMBC regarding the pavement outside the Crown Hotel regarding possible funding for maintenance. We will publish the outcome in due course

Both the Cricket Club and Bawtry Junior Football Clubs are growing and now have girls teams involved which we applaud.

If you have any problems with the roads and pavements around Bawtry you can contact highways at DMBC on 01302 736000.

The council wishes everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
