Charity Seeks Volunteer Engineers/Craftsmen
T
WANTED: Practically Minded People With A Flair For Simple Ingenuity Remap is a very special charity, working through a nationwide network of dedicated volunteers. These inspiring people use their ingenuity and skills to enable people with disabilities to achieve much-desired independence in some aspect of their lives, or to enjoy leisure opportunities previously closed to them. Although charities have problems raising funds, and REMAP is not alone in this, Doncaster REMAP panel is looking for volunteer engineers/craftsmen to design, manufacture and commission aids for clients.
Ten per cent of us will have a disability at some stage. It may come on with the onset of old age, it may be congenital or it may be the result of an accident. There are many products on the market designed to make life easier for people with disabilities but if these don’t provide the solution, REMAP can step in and make a gadget or a special piece of equipment, sometimes proprietary equipment, tailored to the individual person’s specific needs. Some are very simple, others are more elaborate, but each one is unique, and all are given free to the people who need them. Each year in Doncaster and Bassetlaw areas

Special thanks to Lesley and her team at Tickhill Community Library for their contribution in selling the flat pack boxes and providing a drop off point for them, it makes a tremendous difference that we have a central location.
REMAP needs engineers/ craftsmen with their own workshops where the devices are made. Our engineers need to be able to solve problems, design and manufacture their designs and commission them to the satisfaction of the client and where appropriate the Occupational therapist. Our engineers really enjoy making things well, whether it involves welding a joint, turning a piece of wood, putting together a toy car, upholstering a chair or helping with administration. Expenses are paid to the engineers for any travelling or for any materials purchased.

Basic hygiene is about dignity. No-one should be left struggling to wash their hair, brush their teeth, change their baby's nappy or afford sanitary protection because they are blighted by low wages, high housing costs, benefit cuts, illness or bereavement. Hygiene poverty is shaming, excluding and isolating and the work of The Hygiene Bank directly benefits those in crisis. LIFESTYLE
Dazzle this Christmas There’s nothing like glittering sequins, sparkling diamantes and shiny precious metals to give you instant glamour and brighten your spirits through the winter nights. The party season is fast approaching so it’s SEQUINS of course! “Sequin” originated from the Arabic word sikka, meaning “coin,” later becoming the Venetian word zecchino. In the late 16th century, it morphed into the French word ‘sequin’ as we know today. In 1922, archaeologists opened the tomb of Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun, revealing splendid garments embellished in gold metal discs. Western fashion later reflected the dazzling artefacts in King Tut’s tomb and 1920’s Flappers’ dresses were often embellished with hundreds of metal sequins. Christmas Party Dresses fall in to a number of categories: 50’s and 60’s retro style for those who love to look lady like; 70’s Disco Queen for those who want to sparkle; minimalist for those who love that understated look; and of course, not forgetting the Little Black Dress. The Little Black Dress is hard to resist, but is it really flattering? For decades the LBD has been
8
the failsafe garment of choice for women everywhere. It’s simple, slimming, chic and above all a ‘safe bet’ - but the colour black does not flatter most people. The majority of British women will not look young and healthy with black worn close to their faces. In fact, it can be dramatically ageing. Many women have relied on their trusty LBD for years, but before you buy the new black dress, here’s a useful tip to tell if black really suits you: Hold black up against your face, stand in front of the mirror and look for dark lines under the chin, shadows around the eyes or lines on the face that are highlighted. If there are no dark areas or shadows, you can probably wear black close to your face and look great. Another sign that black suits you is if you have dark “crypts” or “spokes” in the iris of your eyes. Those who fit into that category will be able to wear their LBD to their hearts’ content, but the rest of you take care!
in anything else - particularly with the party season approaching the LBD will once again dominate the scene. But finding a dress in YOUR right colour is the most flattering thing you could do for yourself this season. The Christmas party season is perfect for a dazzling dress and a great alternative to black. If a sparkly dress is not for you then you could try interesting accessories which are the easiest way to add sparkle to winter outfits whether for daytime or evening. Attractive accessories can really set off a very simple outfit. The sequin clutch bag is still a popular choice for Christmas and there are lots more new designs to enjoy this year.
Black is a highly controversial subject. It gives the illusion of Sue Burton making women look slimmer. Designers will have us believe Award-winning Stylist & Image that it’s THE colour of this Consultant season and you mustn’t be seen www.colourstyleanalysis.com

Harworth Colliery Football Club December T
Hello all and welcome to the Football Clubs December update and may I take this oppurtunity to wish you all a very merry Xmas and may the New Year be kind to everyone. November was a very stop start month for us, and to be honest it feels like the season hasn’t really taken off, as we have had no run of games and with the awful wet weather we had we now are looking at a potential back log already, at the time of writing our 1st team have played just 8 league games, reserves just 4 and Ladies 5 so lets hope for a mild month and we can get on with getting these games played. We currently sit in 3rd position having lost just the one game to current league leaders Newark Town, so we are well placed for the push for promotion in the New Year but we have some very important games coming up in December too, mainly the Bassetlaw Derby away to Retford United on Friday night the 13th, be great to have plenty travelling down the Great North Road and supporting the lads in what will be a very tough evening. At home we have Renishaw Rangers on the 7th and then Collingham away on the 21st and then Phoenix away on the 28th so a tough month for us but one where if we get the results we will be very much in the mix. As ever the club is working hard with its fundraising and December is a crucial month with the Annual Xmas draw so please if you can dig
10
deep and purchase them off your Niece/Nephew, Son/Daughter or just in general, we ask for very little in subs but do ask that all our players sell their share. Our Sponsors are as pivotal to the club as anyone and we thank Ray Moulds from IBS Engineered Products based locally who have kindly taken out an advertising board and Transdek who have sponsored the club in a number of different ways over the past few seasons. Pictured is MD Leon Butler along with brothers Dean and Matt Healey who are also committee members at the club, the Company have very kindly sponsored the U12 girls tracksuit Tops seen here when they were Mascots for a recent home game. There is always plenty of things going off at the club and we do try and keep our social media pages upto date so keep a look out see what’s happening over the Xmas months and if you can make any then we would be delighted to see you, whether that’s a Juniors game or any of our senior fixtures. Many thanks as ever for your support and I hope you have a blinding Xmas.

Dear Friends
T
As we approach the season of Christmas surrounded as we are by the distractions of sparkly decorations, late night shopping, and the latest Christmas ‘must haves’ (last year a pre-lit tree, before that a Christmas jumper) and the pressure of endless to-do lists, relentless ‘special Christmas offers’, the reality of spiralling costs and smaller family budgets, and longer and longer present lists, it is hard to hold on to - in fact in some quarters we have lost sight of - what has become known as the real meaning of Christmas. Sadly, Christmas no longer means angel and Mary, stable and baby, shepherd and star. I am reminded of the old, favourite hymn: ‘Who is He, in yonder stall, at whose feet the shepherds fall?’ I genuinely believe that we are becoming increasingly unable to answer this question. All the preparations for, and the celebration of, the mainstream, marketing- led Christmas (which seem to start earlier and earlier every year) are now so far removed from real reason for the season that the story of Jesus has become practically invisible and perhaps to most, irrelevant. Replaced by a trashy, tinselly commerce driven nothing, a no-thing. But Christmas is not just stable, baby, and star: it is much more. As the hymn writer says: ‘’Tis the Lord! O wondrous story! ‘Tis the Lord! The King of Glory! ‘At his feet we humbly fall; crown Him, crown Him Lord of all.’ Christmas celebrates the coming of God amongst us, the beginning of the path to our Salvation and our eternal destiny in the heavenly kingdom and the nearer presence of God. And this has to be worth celebrating. But could I suggest a radically different, alternative way, with carol singing, nativity plays, Christingles, midnight Mass? All of which put the Christ back into Christmas. We cannot go on allowing ourselves to be manipulated by marketing. It is time to stop the shopping (does granny really want a two-foot high panettone?) And it is time to change our focus and priorities from getting to giving, from me to my community and from commerce to Christ Jesus. May the joy of the angels, the wonder of the shepherds, the richness of the wise men, the love of Mary and Joseph, the peace of the Christ Child be yours this Christmas. Every blessing

Harworth & Bircotes Tenants & Residents Association
The group held their monthly meeting on Tuesday 5 November, and this was, as usual, very well attended. The meeting was addressed by Lucy, from Nottinghamshire County Council, and supported by Bassetlaw District Council, about Wellness and Weight Management. If you have a BMI of 25+ you could be eligible for a free 12 week weight management programme, which would include nutritional advice, physical activity sessions, ongoing support for up to 12 months, and these would be free in our local area. The number to ring to get involved is 03330 050092. There is also support for pregnant women both pre and post natal, in order to give the healthiest start for baby. Following on from the letter which had been sent to Severn Trent Water, and copied to Notts County Council, and Bassetlaw District Council, a letter had been received from Notts County Council, which was in effect quite dismissive of our concerns regarding the problems of infrastructure, and in particular the drains and sewage systems, which had been inadequate for many years, and will come under even more pressure as further housing is being built. Concern was expressed at the way the
16
planning application for 650 houses opposite the sewage works on Tickhill Road had been passed, after Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council withdrew their objections after being told that they would have traffic lights installed at the junction at Tickhill Spital. It was acknowledged that Town Council had objected strongly against this development but all concerns were, disappointingly, swept aside. A raffle will be held over the Christmas period, starting from this following Thursday, with the proceeds going to Bassetlaw Hospice. Members learnt about the “Give a Gift of Dignity at Christmas”. Details can be seen at the Town Hall, and anyone can purchase a bag, whether it be a shopping bag, handbag, toiletry bag, or any bag, and fill it with items such as deodorant, sanitary products, toothbrush and toothpaste, soap etc. Members were urged to pay for the Christmas lunch as soon as possible, and also deposits required for the pantomime at Retford, so that we can allocate unwanted seats to those on the reserve list. The next meeting will take place on Tuesday 3 December, at the Devonshire Road Community Centre. As always, everyone is welcome to attend.

Are you taking on a Commercial Lease? If you’re thinking of becoming a commercial property tenant it is vital to understand what you are taking on. Signing up to a commercial lease is very different from renting residential property, with a range of responsibilities that can come as a big surprise if you’re not prepared. Here are some questions that every prospective commercial tenant should ask before agreeing to any tenancy: 1. What am I actually leasing? Is it an ‘eggshell’ lease/whole of property/surrounding land? This is relevant to repair obligations too. 2. What have I agreed to ‘keep in repair’? In a lease, ‘keep in repair’ actually means ‘put and keep in repair’ - you could be asked to carry out works to rectify disrepair that existed even before your lease. The phrase ‘keep the property in good repair and condition’ is even more onerous - be aware of the wording. 3. Can I terminate the lease early? Break clauses can give flexibility, but take note of any conditions limiting your ability to use this. 4. Do I have security of tenure? You may have the right to renew your lease at the end of your fixed term – this can depend on the wording in
your lease and the circumstances of your occupation. A legal adviser can assist you with assessing what your position is. 5. Can I transfer the lease or sublet? Many commercial landlords allow tenants to transfer/ sublet their lease, but only with their consent and subject to certain strict conditions. This could involve you being a guarantor, and paying the landlord’s legal costs when you look to deal with your lease in this way. 6. What other payments must I make? Insurance, service charge, VAT? Do you have to pay the landlord back for the buildings insurance premium? Is the landlord charging you for any services supplied, for example for the repair of any common parts? What amount/percentage must you pay? Can the landlord incur any expenses or are there restrictions? 7. Is the rent fixed for the whole of the term? Can the landlord review the rent? If so, when and on what basis? What happens if there is a disagreement? All of this should be set out in the lease itself. Make sure you know how and when rent review kicks in, so there are no nasty surprises later down the line.

Hello from Mayflower
This is the story of our dog Kimmy that we rescued at the beginning of the year. I am 6 years old and lived in Romania for most of my life. My owners were very cruel to me and my life was dreadful and harsh. I was made to live outside on the concrete with no shelter or bedding in all weathers sun, rain and snow. The people I lived with would not let me indoors and would hurt me by kicking and beating me if I tried to get past them into the warm dry house. A very kind lady witnessed their cruelty to me on a regular basis and asked my owners if she could have me. Luckily they agreed and my saviour fostered me until a place became available at Mayflower Sanctuary in England. When I arrived at Mayflower I was scared of everything and everybody. Jennie the owner decided I was too stressed to be put into the Sanctuary so I stayed with her and her dogs. She said I needed to learn to trust people but this took a long time. I had never had a bed of my own and now I was allowed on Jennies bed, so I felt I was in heaven. I didn’t move far from this bed for a long time though, I think I was frightened my new friends would steal my spot. Eventually Jennie went on holiday and some other people moved in to take care of us all. They were very nice to me and I felt safe and a little more confident. When Jennie came home they asked if I could go to stay with them and their dog and cats for a little while to see how we all got on together. From that day my life began, I now have a forever home with my new mum, dad and sister called Heart she was a street dog in Cyprus (we did struggle with the language barrier at first but we now get along fine together) I also have great fun with the cats Tizzy, Cleo and Milly they like to lick my face to say hello. My mum takes us both for walks which we love, but we both hate the cold and rain so our mum makes us wear a warm jacket, we probably have
bad memories of another harsh life. We also have lots of treats from people we meet on our walks as well as treats at home, but our nice vet said we are both getting a little podgy, (I am not sure what that means ) but mum says we need to walk more and cut down on the treats for a while.. I now have a bed of my own which is very cosy (but mum and dad’s bed is even better). I have my own food bowl and toys and lots of love. I am loving my cosy new life, however it will take a long time to forget and trust completely again. I am looking forward to my first Christmas curled up on the sofa in the warm with my new mum, dad, sister and furry friends. I am hoping Santa will visit me for the first time in my life too. Happy Christmas and love from Kimmy. I hope you all enjoyed Kimmy’s story which is not unlike many of the dogs we bring in from Romania. Jennie the Sanctuary manager was there to rehabilitated her when she first arrived and without that one to one help Kimmy would not have grown into the dog she is today.
Pacha was rehomed from Mayflower as a youngster and has spent 2 wonderful years in her home. During this time she has shared her home with another cat. Unfortunately, several months ago, he was involved in a car accident and had to spend a couple of weeks in the hospital. Fortunately he recovered and returned but this wasn’t good news for Pacha as he started to attack her at every opportunity. Things got so bad that Pacha was afraid to come into the house and her owner was having to feed her outside and ‘sneak’ her indoors Pacha was becoming depressed so, although her owner loved her deeply, it was arranged for her to back into our care. She has settled well and, although still a little nervous, she is a treasure to have around. Pacha was able to go outside in her former home so a secure garden to explore away from busy roads is required for her new home.
There are lots of dogs that have nowhere to call home that need our help, the lucky ones are in our rescue centres and will hopefully be given a second chance of a family life. We shall continue to do our utmost and rescue as many dogs as possible both locally and further afield. The Sanctuary need more home visitors to check potential new homes for families that have chosen a dog, making sure that the dog and family are a good match, training will be given and petrol paid if required. Interested ? Please call us on 01302 711330 for a chat. A huge thank you to everyone that has supported us throughout the year, both staff, kennel carers and the many volunteers. Best Wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Peaceful New Year

We didn’t get along so it wasn’t an option for me to move with her. I have found it difficult to settle here and preferred to hide away in my bed. It was all so scarey but its not so bad now. I quite like to sit on my chair and watch the world go by – especially when the sun is shining. Perhaps I could do the same from your windowsills. All I need is a little time and patience for my true personality to come shining through. The wait will be worth it. My carer says that there’s a cuddle cat hiding in here somewhere, it just needs a little persuasion to come out. In the meantime I’ll just sit here and wait. Please don’t make me wait too long.

Next May I will have been a competitive swimmer for 6 years. My favourite part about swimming is the competitions we attend together: not only is it a day to race against your own times and get amazing personal bests, it’s also about being able to spend time with friends you have met through swimming, who will be there for you no matter what. A few weeks ago, Bircotes Swimming Club attended the Peter Jervis meet in Retford; all the athletes who took part in the competition had been training hard in sessions so they could go in with the best possible chance of getting a personal best. That hard work payed off since 60% of all the swimmers got personal bests and came away very pleased with themselves. Over the October half term our Head Coach arranged three extra training sessions, to improve the stamina and speed of the athletes ready for the Remembrance meet in Scunthorpe, on the 10th of November (pictured). We had 30 plus swimmers at this meet, three of them achieving above and beyond! Leon and Jake achieved County times for next year (50m freestyle for Leon, and 50m backstroke for Jake) and Liam managed to achieve a sub-30 s time in his 50m freestyle. What great achievements! Our Club did so well that every single athlete walked out with either a personal best or a medal. Massive well done to all the swimmers. On the 16th of November, Bircotes Swimming Club are holding two events, a Sponsored Swimathon and a Triathlon to raise money for The St Giles school in Retford and for our Club. The Swimathon will take place over 3 hours and the swimmers will have to swim as far as they can in that time. We are estimating that the top swimmers will do around 5-6 miles. The triathlon is also taking place at the same time. This event entails a 600m swim (30 lengths), a 6km bike ride using the gym bikes and then a 2.4km run around the sports hall. These events are for having a bit of fun whilst doing the sports we love and raising money for great causes. If you would like more information about the Club and would like to attend for a trial please email our Club Secretary on bircotesswimclub@gmail.com

TO CONTACT NOTTINGHAMSHIRE POLICE DIAL 101 for Crimestoppers 0800 555 111 For a more detailed list of crimes and incidents, members of public can look on www. police.uk website which will enable members of public to filter down to street/area level you want to look at for detailed list of incidents/crimes in that particular street or area. The easiest way to search is to put in any postcode for Harworth/ Bircotes in the main page where it should then come up with a page listed Harworth with a crime map of Harworth & Bircotes, and the number of incidents reported in a month (usually 2 months behind). You can then click on the interactive crime map which you are able to zoom down to street level where incidents that have been reported are plotted on the map. You can then click on the circle of any incident where it will then show you the type of incident, current status of the crime/incident if under investigation or finalised. You can also search back over any month period over the previous 5 years. POLICE WARN PUBLIC OVER RECENT ONLINE SCAMS :Lockdown Your Online Accounts With 2Fa The easy way to keep hackers out of your online accounts. Whether it’s your Amazon or Netflix account, the explosion in popularity of online apps and services means more and more of us need to remember a seemingly endless list of passwords. Sometimes that leads to shortcuts that are bad for our online security, such as using the same password for multiple accounts, or creating a simple password that can be guessed easily. You should secure your important online accounts, such as your email, or any account that holds personal or financial details, with a password that’s strong and unique. For further protection we recommended enabling two-factor authentication (2FA). Accounts with 2FA enabled require you to verify your identity using your password (first factor), and a randomised code (second factor) that’s delivered to your smartphone. That way, if your password is stolen, fraudsters still need your phone. If your phone is stolen, they still need your password. For instructions on how to enable 2FA on popular online services, visit www. telesign.com/turnon2fa If you think you’ve been targeted or want to report a fraud incident, please call Action Fraud as soon as possible on 0300 123 2040 or via Action Fraud website www.actionfraud.police.uk

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - DECEMBER 2019 sure some people need food much more than I need a card. If you would like to do this, you can drop off items at the Town Hall – I will happily deliver them. Primary Care in Harworth and Bircotes: I know your concerns about accessing G.P. services, and I have met with Idris Griffiths, Chief Officer of Bassetlaw Clinical Commissioning Group, and Dr Victoria McGregor-Riley, Director of Primary Care. G.P. surgeries are well aware of the difficulties – the shortage of G.P.s is a national problem – and it is difficult attracting them to this area. However, local surgeries are taking steps to improve the situation: 1. Patients can book appointments or get advice on-line; practice staff can tell you about this 2. Providing more appointments at evenings and weekend 3. New skills in the workforce e.g. Physicians Associates – these are staff who are health professionals or have a bioscience degree who then undertake further training, before providing a higher level of patient care under the supervision of a G.P. This approach will enable patients to get the right care at the
right level, so that those who urgently need to see the G.P. can do so.

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - DECEMBER 2019 To Make You Smile: A Visitor in the Night I learned the importance of home security the hard way, so now I have alarms on my bungalow (and shed), C.C.T.V. and security lights, though the lights are sometimes triggered by four-legged creatures of the night. At 4am one morning recently in November – yes, I am an early riser – I followed my usual routine: put on the kettle, put coffee in my cup, and then slightly opened the back door whilst waiting for the kettle to boil. I looked at the night sky – if I can see the seven stars in the Plough I know there aren’t any clouds (did you know these are the brightest starts in the constellation Ursa Major?) I then checked if the hedgehogs had eaten the food I had put out, because I’m watching for signs of hibernation. Suddenly, the security light switched on. I stood perfectly still, frozen in amazement as a creature walked straight past me, staring determinedly ahead at the 5ft fence it then so easily jumped over. So, what was it? A cat, a dog? No, it was a fox, something I certainly didn’t expect to see in my back garden!
34
This is the closest I have ever been to this creature, and his bright coloured coat and white tip on his tail could be clearly seen. Though I suspect he was out to create trouble, I had to momentarily admire this smart ‘night bandit` who can wreak such havoc…but then, maybe we should expect to see more ‘urban foxes` in our Town as their natural environment continues to disappear under housing sites!
