COMMUNITY

Cause for a Cuppa Hello again from Cause for a Cuppa. Before I plow forward with what I planned to share, I wanted to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas. We would love to welcome you along to our Sunday services throughout December and on Christmas Day at 10:30. Remember it IS called CHRISTmas. Last month I promised I would share the outcome of the property auction in regard to the Methodist Church. If ever I could write a book, this would probably be the subject. For those who haven’t heard, sadly we were unsuccessful in the effort to keep the church in Rossington as a church and community centre. The auction was held on 30 October at 2:00. There was very little interest in it and went for £125,000. As best I know, a builder from outside the village bought it and I have no idea what their plans are. If you would allow me to fill in a bit of the back story. We started this whole process back in February (or thereabouts). Over the months, we’ve probably invested on the order of £2500 towards the effort, including an asbestos survey, advertising and fund raising materials and bank loan application fees and other bits and pieces. I would hate to try and figure out the man-hours invested … not from just myself but from people across the village and indeed around the world. We had money sent in from several different States in the USA, from churches, personal friends, a CEO, friends who are deaf and were part of our deaf church and Ukraine. We had a number of village groups do fund raisers. A dear lady led the charge to connect with people from St. Michael’s & St. Luke’s to help sponsor me in the Donny Half Marathon. We were on Look North, Radio Sheffield (2x), TraxFM and an hour long interview on SineFM. We had a 2 page spread in Messy Church (3:30-5:30) 17/18 Dec (Tues/Wed) £1pp donation *Child must have an adult

the Free Press and a story in the Gazette. We set up a text-to-give and crowd funding page and a 260 person following on Facebook. I wanted to thank EVERYONE. So many invested not just money but hours to help support an event or even take the lead on a fund raising activity. Thank you so much. I can truly say that it was not just a village effort … or a town effort but an international effort. When the auction happened, I was in Edinburgh with my son. “Eric … what?!!??” Well, I’d been promising him some time for just us two. We postponed one time before and just couldn’t do it again. The auction WAS set for 23 October but was pushed back. In the few days leading up to the auction and the legal pack was released, there was a flurry of activity. The guide price had been set to £100,000 which was £140,000 BELOW the asking price. I’ll be honest in that I was utterly gobsmacked. Because we were no where near the asking price, I didn’t want to spend additional funds engaging a solicitor and following through the with loan. But we did have £100,000 There’s been so many who have expressed their sadness. I can appreciate that. I was taken by surprise. I think I had convinced myself that I had no emotional connection to this and it was literally bricks & mortar. But over time I sensed that had changed. I THINK I’m having to go through a grieving of sorts. I don’t want to make light of anyone who is struggling over the grief of losing a loved one, friend or even a pet. But what I’ve come to realise is that grief (and loss) is part of who we are as humans. Anything that we develop a connection towards … if we would lose that, grief in some shape is real. I needed to recognise that and give myself space and time. Even with an article such as this, it’s not just reporting but hopefully something that will help. Anything we lose can result in grief. Like myself … give yourself time and space. Talk to someone. Everything will be OK. As always, the door is always open and the kettle on. See you in 2020!

Charity Seeks Volunteer Engineers/Craftsmen

T

WANTED: Practically Minded People With A Flair For Simple Ingenuity Remap is a very special charity, working through a nationwide network of dedicated volunteers. These inspiring people use their ingenuity and skills to enable people with disabilities to achieve much-desired independence in some aspect of their lives, or to enjoy leisure opportunities previously closed to them. Although charities have problems raising funds, and REMAP is not alone in this, Doncaster REMAP panel is looking for volunteer engineers/craftsmen to design, manufacture and commission aids for clients.

Ten per cent of us will have a disability at some stage. It may come on with the onset of old age, it may be congenital or it may be the result of an accident. There are many products on the market designed to make life easier for people with disabilities but if these don’t provide the solution, REMAP can step in and make a gadget or a special piece of equipment, sometimes proprietary equipment, tailored to the individual person’s specific needs. Some are very simple, others are more elaborate, but each one is unique, and all are given free to the people who need them. Each year in Doncaster and Bassetlaw areas

our volunteers make approx. 50 items. REMAP needs engineers/ craftsmen with their own workshops where the devices are made. Our engineers need to be able to solve problems, design and manufacture their designs and commission them to the satisfaction of the client and where appropriate the Occupational therapist. Our engineers really enjoy making things well, whether it involves welding a joint, turning a piece of wood, putting together a toy car, upholstering a chair or helping with administration. Expenses are paid to the engineers for any travelling or for any materials purchased.

ROSSINGTON GOOD NEIGHBOURS Would like to wish all our customers, old & new,

a Merry Christmas & Happy New Year We are a local charity that operates every Wednesday & Thursday serving a freshly cooked 2 course meal to eat in at Rossington Memorial Hall, McConnell Crescent or delivered to your door.

Participation in regular physical activity can increase our self-esteem and can reduce stress and anxiety. The main things to consider when choosing a form of physical activity is making time daily for exercise, is it the right type of fun activity that is going to be manageable moving forward and is it the right type of exercise for you? Our best advice is choosing something you like doing, start slowly and make it part of your daily lifestyle and consider making some short term goals that you can try to work towards. Break it into three sections of exercise you can do at home, at work and when out and about and you will soon start working on a program! Good luck

I would like to say a huge thank you to Ken Guest who has been collecting Celebration tub lids all year for the fantastic poppy display at the former water tower and the Styrrup roundabout. Ken personally funded the paint, netting, tie wraps and all his time – along with his grandchildren Sinead and Kane – for the display which he hopes will be even bigger and better next year. If you want to donate your red celebration lids just drop them off at the Memorial Hall. Well done Ken!

Hello from Mayflower

This is the story of our dog Kimmy that we rescued at the beginning of the year. I am 6 years old and lived in Romania for most of my life. My owners were very cruel to me and my life was dreadful and harsh. I was made to live outside on the concrete with no shelter or bedding in all weathers sun, rain and snow. The people I lived with would not let me indoors and would hurt me by kicking and beating me if I tried to get past them into the warm dry house. A very kind lady witnessed their cruelty to me on a regular basis and asked my owners if she could have me. Luckily they agreed and my saviour fostered me until a place became available at Mayflower Sanctuary in England. When I arrived at Mayflower I was scared of everything and everybody. Jennie the owner decided I was too stressed to be put into the Sanctuary so I stayed with her and her dogs. She said I needed to learn to trust people but this took a long time. I had never had a bed of my own and now I was allowed on Jennies bed, so I felt I was in heaven. I didn’t move far from this bed for a long time though, I think I was frightened my new friends would steal my spot. Eventually Jennie went on holiday and some other people moved in to take care of us all. They were very nice to me and I felt safe and a little more confident. When Jennie came home they asked if I could go to stay with them and their dog and cats for a little while to see how we all got on together. From that day my life began, I now have a forever home with my new mum, dad and sister called Heart she was a street dog in Cyprus (we did struggle with the language barrier at first but we now get along fine together) I also have great fun with the cats Tizzy, Cleo and Milly they like to lick my face to say hello. My mum takes us both for walks which we love, but we both hate the cold and rain so our mum makes us wear a warm jacket, we probably have

bad memories of another harsh life. We also have lots of treats from people we meet on our walks as well as treats at home, but our nice vet said we are both getting a little podgy, (I am not sure what that means ) but mum says we need to walk more and cut down on the treats for a while.. I now have a bed of my own which is very cosy (but mum and dad’s bed is even better). I have my own food bowl and toys and lots of love. I am loving my cosy new life, however it will take a long time to forget and trust completely again. I am looking forward to my first Christmas curled up on the sofa in the warm with my new mum, dad, sister and furry friends. I am hoping Santa will visit me for the first time in my life too. Happy Christmas and love from Kimmy. I hope you all enjoyed Kimmy’s story which is not unlike many of the dogs we bring in from Romania. Jennie the Sanctuary manager was there to rehabilitated her when she first arrived and without that one to one help Kimmy would not have grown into the dog she is today.

Pacha was rehomed from Mayflower as a youngster and has spent 2 wonderful years in her home. During this time she has shared her home with another cat. Unfortunately, several months ago, he was involved in a car accident and had to spend a couple of weeks in the hospital. Fortunately he recovered and returned but this wasn’t good news for Pacha as he started to attack her at every opportunity. Things got so bad that Pacha was afraid to come into the house and her owner was having to feed her outside and ‘sneak’ her indoors Pacha was becoming depressed so, although her owner loved her deeply, it was arranged for her to back into our care. She has settled well and, although still a little nervous, she is a treasure to have around. Pacha was able to go outside in her former home so a secure garden to explore away from busy roads is required for her new home.

There are lots of dogs that have nowhere to call home that need our help, the lucky ones are in our rescue centres and will hopefully be given a second chance of a family life. We shall continue to do our utmost and rescue as many dogs as possible both locally and further afield. The Sanctuary need more home visitors to check potential new homes for families that have chosen a dog, making sure that the dog and family are a good match, training will be given and petrol paid if required. Interested ? Please call us on 01302 711330 for a chat. A huge thank you to everyone that has supported us throughout the year, both staff, kennel carers and the many volunteers. Best Wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Peaceful New Year

We didn’t get along so it wasn’t an option for me to move with her. I have found it difficult to settle here and preferred to hide away in my bed. It was all so scarey but its not so bad now. I quite like to sit on my chair and watch the world go by – especially when the sun is shining. Perhaps I could do the same from your windowsills. All I need is a little time and patience for my true personality to come shining through. The wait will be worth it. My carer says that there’s a cuddle cat hiding in here somewhere, it just needs a little persuasion to come out. In the meantime I’ll just sit here and wait. Please don’t make me wait too long.

Love for Reading at St Michael’s T

At St Michael’s we are proud to call ourselves a reading school. Over the past few years, the staff have worked hard to raise the profile of reading for all children.

children are taking part in our ‘treehouse challenge’ where they are encouraged to read the 13 storey treehouse books. In year 5 and 6, children are participating in the reading club and Key Stage 2 children are loving our Roald Dahl book swap club. All of our topics begin with a key text and children are encouraged to read around the topic.

Reading captures the imagination of children. There are many benefits to reading, some of these include: reading sharpens your mind and increases your vocabulary; it lowers your stress and can decrease your depression; it improves your memory and focus and strengthens your writing abilities. Reading enhances your imagination, boosts your sleep and can brighten your day. Michael Morpurgo shares that, “Books are the most vital tool of education. They are more important than any other fancy resource. Stories give us knowledge and understanding. They teach us about our place in the world and we learn what happened in the past and how we can do better in the future.” At St Michael’s, children are given lots of opportunities to develop their love for reading. In year 3, the

We are very lucky at St Michael’s as our parents are incredibly supportive. We hold weekly parent morning reading clubs and parents have recently attended our parent’s reading workshops. We are always looking for volunteers to come into school to listen to children read. Please contact school if you are able to volunteer your time.

December is usually a time of reflection (in between the hectic preparations for Christmas!) and we look back on a very busy year. With your help we were able to inform DRI at the beginning of the year that we had the money for another CT scanner. The new CT unit should be operational by March 2020 and we will keep you updated. In April we launched our prostate cancer appeal for a £150,000 biopsy machine, which at the time of writing (beginning of November) had reached £40,000. We are very fortunate to have the continuing support of so many groups, organisations and individuals who fundraise and offer help in many ways. Also our lovely friendly volunteers (we have

Our annual Memory Tree event in the Frenchgate Centre continues during December until Friday, 20th December. We are downstairs outside Boots from 10am to 3pm Monday to Saturday. Brodsworth Way Pavilion Defibrillator

T

Rossington Parish Council is delighted to announce that the Race Night at the Memorial Hall raised a fantastic £627.00.

partner Michael Townsend at the Miners Welfare Defibrillator. Alongside Tracey and Caroline are Cllrs Carol Wileman, Bob Anderson and Ken Guest. They were also joined by Michael’s dad. Michael was a postman in Rossington for over 20 years and was very much loved and respected by all his customers.

So along with the £486.00 raised at the Summer Festival the total raised was a fantastic £1,113.00. This has paid for the defibrillator at Brodsworth Way Pavilion that Doncaster Council has kindly offered to install and light.

Michael was a keen cricketer playing for Rossington to a high standard, he was particularly known for being a good bowler. His other love was fishing, which he did right to the end. He would travel the length and breadth of the country fulfilling his passion.

Thanks must go to Cllr Ken Guest and Yvette, Cllr Carol Wileman and Derek, Cllr Bob Anderson and Debs, Cllr John Parkin and Jean, Cllr Gaynor Spencer and Sue and Shaun Cooper whose hard work and support made the night the success it was. Elected Mayor Ros Jones once again offered her invaluable support. Caroline Flint MP did a great job selling raffle tickets. Thanks must also to our Clerks Anne and Zoe for organising the event.

Sadly, Michael passed away suddenly at the age of 48, just as he was embarking on a new venture to foster children, something he’d been looking forward to doing for many years. His partner Tracey will carry on to fulfil his dream. Cllr Bob Anderson thought it was a fitting tribute to dedicate a defibrillator, that will hopefully save lives, to his much missed and esteemed colleague Michael. This was wholeheartedly supported by Rossington Parish Council.

In Memory of Michael Townsend Caroline Flint MP also attended the unveiling of the plaque in loving memory of Tracey Wood’s

December Newsletter Rossington Parish Council

Chairman’s Report Hello fellow Rossington folk Your Parish Council is a very active council in Rossington. Anne, the Clerk and Zoe the Responsible Financial Officer are at the hub of all the activities listed below and much more. Their contact details are: Tel: 01302 864731 Mobile: 07402206667. Email: anne@rossingtonparishcouncil.org.uk and zoe@ rossingtonparishcouncil.org.uk. Casual Vacancy At the Parish Council meeting on Tuesday 12 November 2019 Craig Nichols was co-opted onto the council. I’d like to welcome Craig Nichols and look forward to him taking a full and active role in our community. CHARITY OF THE MONTH Rossington Good Neighbours – Meals on Wheels The Parish Council, and I as a member of the management committee, is a big supporter of this fantastic charity for men and women over the age of 50 in the village. They provide a 2-course freshly cooked meal for just £3.50 at the Memorial Hall on McConnell Crescent on Wednesdays and Thursdays or you can have it delivered to your home for an extra 50p by one of their fantastic volunteers. If you wish you can play a game of bingo or curling plus you can book a 20 minute massage for just a fi ver. How good is that! Our first class cooks also offer savoury and sweet items to take away so that’s your tea all sorted! Just ring Zoe on 01302 864731 if you are interested. Rossington Marketplace Drew Oxley from Doncaster Council has put in a large bid to upgrade the marketplace in response to consultation with local residents and traders. It will probably be January 2020 now before we know if he’s been successful so watch this space. Firework Display Once again Fuse Fireworks put on an amazing 20 minute display top Pop Music on the Miners Welfare Ground. £1,698 was collected in donations which will go straight back into the Parish Council coffers for next year’s firework display. Let us know what you thought about the display.

Parish Race Night – 6.30 pm Saturday 26 October 2019 I would like to say a huge thankyou to my wife Yvette, Cllr Carol Wileman and Derek, Cllr Bob Anderson and Debs, Cllr John Parkin and Jean, Cllr Gaynor Spencer and Sue and Shaun Cooper who’s worked so hard to help us raise a whopping £626.99 at the Race Night. So, together with the £486.32 raised at the Summer Festival, the full cost of the Brodsworth Way Defibrillator has been paid for by local residents. Thank you to Joanne Child for making (and donating) the best pies in Rossington. Also thank you to Mayor Ros Jones, Caroline Flint MP and Phil Coles who also took an active role on the night and last if not least to Anne and Zoe for organising the event and for you for attending. Parish Panto - Aladdin All the tickets for this year’s panto have now been sold. We’re looking forward to everyone having a great day so get your vocal cords in gear – “Oh yes I will”. Santa says he’s looking forward to meeting all the good children in Rossington. Next year’s panto has already been booked for Saturday 5 December 2020. If there is a bigger demand we may consider putting on an extra performance in the morning. Let us know what you think. Bands for the 3 Day Summer Festival 2020 We’re now booked Dr Hackenbush for the Friday night. They are a welcome return to the festival as they went down a storm the last time they performed. We’re still looking for bands for Saturday afternoon and evening and Sunday afternoon so if you know of any bands that will ‘knock em dead’ let Anne or Zoe know. Also, on the Saturday afternoon will be Open-Mike for any locals to showcase their talent. Remembrance Day Parade The Remembrance Day Parade started at 10.30 am from the Ex-Service Social Club on West End Lane, then along Queen Mary’s Road, Streathfied Crescent, Queen Avenue to St Luke’s Church, returning to the Club afterwards for light refreshments. On behalf of the Parish Council I would like to thank everyone who organised and took part in this event, it was well attended with the church being full. It was an honour to take part. Well done to all the Rossington Schools for attending the service on Monday 11 November, presided by Mark Porter from St Michael’s School. Bye for now

UPDATE FROM COUNCILLORS

RACHAEL BLAKE AND MICK COOPER Your DMBC Councillors

A smaller update this month due to the magazine having lots of information for residents. We have provided only brief information about the work we are involved in and things that are happening in the village – If you would like more information do get in touch. Superfast Broadband coming to Rossington – Virgin Media Virgin Media will be bringing superfast broadband to the village. They will be siting 50 new cabinets. DMBC’s network services teams have worked closely with them to minimise disruption to residents. The cables will be put under paths but in many areas, this will impact on roads as well so there may be traffic management in place. To minimise disruption to residents 2 areas at a time will be done with the first two areas between around Littleworth and Yew Tree. Residents will receive information from Virgin when the work is due to start and what the impacts will be. It is expected that the work will start in November and finish in June next year. Included in the information to residents will be a complaints number to ring if people have complaints, but please do contact us if you aren’t happy with what is happening. After the disruption it will mean quicker broadband which will make a big difference to everyone who uses it.

Footpaths and Cycle Paths around Rossington – these have now been completed – if

there are hedges that still need cutting back please let us know. The hedges in St Michael’s cemetery have also been cut back. Hedges around Bankwood Crescent have been cut back – if you have an area that you think needs improving please contact us and we will contact street scene to get it sorted.

Bankwood Lane – residents in the area will have received details of an appeal from the landowner about using the area on the corner as a lorry park. As we have mentioned before Eco power (formerly Attero) have not done this – it is the landowner, so it is important that residents do respond to the letter and make their views known. If you need any help with this, please get in touch. Also, we have been

34

told that the much-awaited link road will be starting on 6 January even if the EA permission for increasing tonnage isn’t provided. We continue to complain on behalf of residents about the stockpiles of waste which are affecting residents who live close by and we are being told that many inspections are taking place so that the area can be improved

Iport and Lidl – due to our requests on behalf of

residents, Lidl have acted to address the overnight lorry parking that is affecting resident. Vehicle recognition is due to be installed to prevent overnight parking – this is to comply with the planning conditions that were put on the area when Lidl was given planning permission

Problems with the 205 bus – please get in touch as other residents have if you are being affected by the unreliability of the 205. We will provide an update next month about our meeting with First Buses. What we can help with – over the last few months we have helped people with housing moves; anti-social behavior; garden issues; disability access and ramps; dropped kerbs and many more things that matter to you. Come to our surgery or contact us and we can meet somewhere or visit you at home. Also, we don’t just deal with problems, we want to hear from you if you have ideas for how the village can be improved. Next surgery Friday 13 December from 1230 -2pm at the café in Holmescarr Centre and from 2.15-4pm at Miners Welfare on West End Lane. Please don’t wait for our surgery to get in touch. We are available any time and happy to meet to assist with any individual concerns that you have. Rachael Tel: 07976896563 blake@doncaster.gov.uk

Harworth Office

Make a Property Trust Will How do they work?

For Property Trust Wills to be effective you must own your property jointly with your partner. Most partners own their home as joint tenants. This means when one dies the home will automatically pass to the survivor.

All for

£300 inc VAT*

We will alter the ownership from joint tenants to tenants in common. This means you own a distinct share which you can then leave into the Property Trust which grants the surviving spouse/partner a life interest in the home for their lifetime. Should the surviving spouse/partner need to go into a care home then only their share of the home is taken into account not the whole. Should your spouse/partner remarry or make a new Will after your death then your share of the home is protected for your beneficiaries. With arranged Care Home costs currently in the region of £600 per week, the cost of £300.00 is a small price to pay for the severance of joint tenancy and Wills. Jones & Co is probably the best known firm of local Solicitors, having offered personal and business legal advice to people in the area for more than 200 years. Our team include members of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) and Solicitors for the Elderly. * Excludes disbursements.
