Late 2015 brought the news that the Tour De Yorkshire would be winging its way through this area on Saturday 30th April. This could be a huge opportunity for our local communities, drawing people from other parts of the area and much farther afield to watch the race. If you are planning activities on that day do please keep me in touch so that we can include a full list of local events in the March and April issues and ensure everyone knows where the action is taking place!

It doesn’t take much to show someone you love them, and it’s the thoughts and efforts that go a long way. Random acts of kindness, however small, have the power to at the very least put a small smile on someone’s face. In the US they will be celebrating Random Acts of Kindness day on 17th February, but maybe this is something better carried out every day, whenever the opportunity arises? If everyone was kind to the people around them what a different world we would live in. So even if you don’t have a special someone in February perhaps you could have a go at extending some love.

Village raises money for lifesaving kit Villagers in Misson have raised enough money to purchase a lifesaving defibrillator. This is all the more amazing as it has been achieved without the need to apply for any grants, all funding coming from within the village itself. The true meaning of community spirit was exampled by organizations and individuals giving of both money and time in order to enable the defibrillator to be purchased and fixed to the wall of The Angel Inn. The Misson Community Association coordinated the operation. Whilst in an emergency 999 should be dialed immediately, in addition residents are now within easy reach of this lifesaving equipment. In addition to actually having the equipment, when the call went out for volunteers to be trained in its use a number of villagers quickly put themselves forward. On a dreary November night 16 people attended at the Community Centre and were successfully trained in both CPR and use of the defibrillator by Learoy Fox of East Midlands Ambulance Service. Learoy later commented on what a great turnout we had had and what a great night it had been for him to see so much enthusiasm in a village of this size. However residents do not need to have taken part in the training event to be able to assist in the event of an emergency. The type of defibrillator which we were able to purchase is fully automated with clear voice instruction being given on how to use it once it has been opened. If further support is required a list of trained volunteers together with their contact numbers is stored in the defibrillator cabinet. There is also available a DVD which residents can borrow if they so wish which explains very clearly how to operate the equipment. Misson should be thrilled to bits with what residents have achieved. It shows what a local community can do when there is a focus. Everyone has pulled together. T TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 969696

Bawtry Residents Group News Firstly, can I wish all members of the Bawtry Residents Group (BRG) a happy New Year and thank you all for the support you have given the BRG since it began over twelve months ago and hopefully your continued support. Secondly, I thought I would take this opportunity introduce myself to you (Doug Cartwright) as the newly elected chair of the BRG. I have lived in and around the Bawtry area all of my life and over the past 30 years have held a number of senior roles within both local government and the transport industries. I hope that by combining my professional experience, personal family ties and local knowledge that I can help develop and take forward the BRG agenda. Finally, I would be more than happy to hear from you with regards any specific issues/concerns you feel the group should be discussing and pursuing. Bawtry Residents Group Meeting News

• Produced a list of issues of concern which are being worked on in conjunction with BTC and the Ward Councillor, Rachael Blake who is extremely supportive; • Helped to achieve the speed improvements on Station Road with the 20 mph zone • Established improved dialogue with BTC; • Encouraged the Town Council to agree, in principle, to the idea of a regular Community Forum - where residents could be updated on the work of BTC, and have the opportunity to discuss issues with Council members. Meetings will continue on a bi-monthly basis on the last Thursday of the month starting at 7:30 pm in The Crown Hotel. The next meeting being on Thursday 31st March 2016. If you care about your town then please come along to the meetings. Regards

Doug

The BRG held its first AGM at the end of November 2015 and agreed that the group would continue until the Neighbourhood Plan had been produced and also until Bawtry Town Council (BTC) have established a meaningful community forum for residents to engage with the council. Because of their successful election to BTC, both John Linsley and David Kirkham stood down from their officer positions (Chair and Vice Chair), but agreed to remain on the committee. The Vice Chair and Secretary position remains vacant and any resident with a little bit of time on their hands is encouraged to put their name forward for the vacant positions. The group has had a successful first year. The key success points being: • In May, it helped to force Town Council elections, which had not happened in Bawtry for many years, and 4 of its members were elected; • Encouraged the Town Council to produce a Neighbourhood Plan - the process for which is now underway; 6

EVERTON VILLAGE PLAYERS Everton Village Players are taking to the stage in February with a comedy, My Friend Miss Flint, by Donald Churchill and Peter Yeldham. In a plot full of twists and turns Tom Lambert a botanist and TV gardening personality, has an unexpected one-night stand with Lucy. Shortly afterwards he receives a call from the Inland Revenue. As the plot unravels and a Picasso vanishes from the wall, it seems that his ex-wife and accountant, Sarah, has been rather economical with the truth about his earnings. He is not helped by pub entertainer Albert, his part time char-person, who has been equally cavalier about his own tax affairs. The arrival of Mr Dodds and Mrs Lens from the tax office causes panic. How Tom attempts to extricate himself from this financial tangle provides sparkling moments of bluff and double bluff in this highly entertaining comedy. The play will take place in Everton Village Hall from Wednesday 17th to Saturday 20th of February at 7:30pm. Tickets can be obtained from the Box Office (01777 817275) or via the Players web site (www.evertonvillageplayers. co.uk) , where there is more information about the play. Tickets are £6 (£5 for students). In conjunction with the Everton Village Players the Sun Inn in Everton are offering a discount off a pretheatre dinner to playgoers. If you are interested in this please mention it when you book your tickets. T

Luncheon Club. Help for Parents of Disabled Children Brainwave, a children’s charity, is reaching out to offer assistance to local parents of children living with special needs. The charity has identified South Yorkshire as a territory that is currently under-represented within its service, and it aims to help more children from the County. Brainwave helps children living with disabilities and complex needs to achieve greater independence. It helps children living with a range of conditions: cerebral palsy, Down’s syndrome, autism, developmental delay and rare genetic disorders. According to Rebecca Earp of Maltby, “Brainwave doesn’t set limits. They see past that and focus on what your child CAN do. It is a really positive place to go.” Richard Clarke, Head of Regional Fundraising tells us, “What is special about Brainwave is the range of mainstream therapies provided, to help with everything from posture, strength, mobility and communication skills, and the amount of time spent with each child to ensure they have the greatest hope of improvement.” The Charity held a Santa Dash in Tickhill, Doncaster during December that raised £7,000, and funds have been allocated to support local children. The Charity works alongside the NHS as an enhancement to the standard medical provision. To find out if this programme is suitable for your child, please contact your closest Brainwave Centre: Tel. 01925 825547 Email enquiries@brainwave. org.uk Web www.brainwave.org.uk T 10

community Hello everyone, it is snowing as I am writing this so I am hoping everyone is warm and safe. The weather is really cold at the moment but luckily all our dogs and cats are kept warm in their houses and cat pens. All our new kennel block is now up and running and we are so proud of our new buildings. A big thank you to Adoption for Pets who funded this project for us. We have an appeal on Face Book at the moment for a little cross breed puppy called Tim he was a litter of 7 and it transpired that he has a heart condition. The little chap will struggle to reach maturity without this operation. After a specialist vets appointment that cost £800 we decided to go ahead with the operation, however the operation will be £2000 which we know is a lot of money but we think this pup with a steely character deserves a chance. So we are now asking for donations to get this little pup back on track and give him a bright future. If you would like to make any small or large donation please either call us or take a look at our Face Book page.

Finding a forever home

arrange this for you at our Sanctuary, we charge £12.00 for this service. We have recently reunited a cat with its owner after going missing for quite some time; this was in fact because it was Micro chipped. So the process does work. We are arranging a fundraising evening at The Ship at Newington it will be a Race Night on the 25th Feb first race to start at 7.30. The tickets are £5 and pie and peas will be included. Tickets available from the venue and the Sanctuary or you could just pay on the door. However it would make life easier if they knew how many people would want pie and peas. Please support us it will be a fun evening and you may make your fortune. Look forward to seeing you there. We will also be arranging a Body Shop party in our reception area in March and I will let you know all about that in the next issue so watch this space!

At the moment we have 50 dogs in our Sanctuary, lots of cross breeds and even pedigrees. They are with us for various reasons, but they all need that special someone to make them part of a loving family life. We had lots of dogs abandoned over the New Year period. There were at least 6 dogs tied to our gate at the bottom of the lane during this period. All with no history at all. However better tied to our gates than let out on a motorway as one little dog was. A kind motorist stopped on the A1 as he had seen a dog running and causing serious havoc. He did manage to catch it and put it in his cab. We were called and came to the rescue of this lucky little dog. He was only with us a couple of weeks before a lovely family adopted him. Micro chipping is law from this April, so if you do have a dog you will need to arrange for this to be done. Apart from anything else if you do become parted from your beloved pet you will be able to be reunited quickly. It is a very quick procedure and we can

Last but not least, we have amazing news. Pipers Garage in Tickhill have donated a van to us that they have also paid to have sign written. We were absolutely desperate for a new van, without transport we cannot function. They came to our rescue and a very BIG thank you from us all. Please come and see us, whether it’s to take a look at our Shop Pet area that we have in reception or to look for a pet that will share your life. Maybe you would like to drop off old towels, blankets, black bin bags, wash powder, washing up liquid or long lasting treats. All of these will make life so much easier for the Sanctuary. Items like this still need to come out of our funds.

That is how they came into the care of Mayflower. Since then a lot has happened to these little guys and as you can see they have grown (a lot !!) Two of them have found new homes and have settled brilliantly but the remaining 4 are still patiently waiting. Black cats are always overlooked which is a shame as they are just as loving as the ‘prettier ones. They are a little nervous when you first meet them but are very loving once they have had time to adjust.

What happens when you’re hurt? At some point in our lives we will all sustain an injury – cuts, sprains and bruises are all familiar problems. Few patients really understand what is happening to their body at this time and yet understanding the process can help manage these problems effectively.… Incurring an injury means that the tissue fibres are disrupted and bleeding occurs. The amount will depend on the severity of the injury and the type of tissue affected. Quickly following on from this, inflammation will build, typically over a 24-72 hour period. Chemicals are released into the area causing blood vessels to enlarge and become leaky. Several types of cell can then enter the area which will create a clot to stop the bleeding, clean up toxins and debris to prevent infection and begin the rebuilding and repair phase. As you can see, in the context of an injury, this inflammatory process is absolutely essential to the healing process even though the resulting pain, heat, swelling and redness are unpleasant. As the inflammation subsides, the repair process continues with the laying down of scar tissue and the delivery of oxygen and nutrients via newly formed blood vessels. This scar tissue will strengthen and be refined over the ensuing months. This amazing series of events means that in most cases a natural recovery occurs following injury. However, there are many factors that can have a negative impact on healing and act as barriers to recovery. Although the healing process can’t be accelerated, physiotherapy can both eliminate any barriers to recovery and work to promote ideal conditions in which the repair process can occur effectively.

Pastor’s Page After the death of David Bowie on 10 January the media was awash with his music, celebrations of his creativity, discussions about his continual reinventions of himself, admiration of his early adoption of new media, etc, etc. and it seemed that everyone was enthralled by him. Grown men who never met him were in tears. Perhaps I should confess that I wasn’t all that impressed by David Bowie or his music; don’t get me wrong, I will hum along to Space Oddity, Under Pressure and Little Drummer Boy just like everyone else but his music didn’t engage me as much as it seems to have done others. I never understood or appreciated Bowie’s various personas, his early attitude towards relationships, I never felt inspired by him to do or be something daring; to me he was just one pop singer among many others; albeit an influential one, granted. As with many people in the music industry, Bowie embraced what is known as the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle in his 20’s and 30’s but as he aged he grew to regret some of the things he had done and he settled 18

down to being a devoted, loyal husband and father. His widow, Iman, has said that the man she married in 1992 was just David Jones from London, a man who preferred staying at home reading to going to parties -not the chameleon showman David Bowie. Bowie stated that he regretted not heeding advice given to him when he was young; particularly not to take drugs regardless of who told him it was a bad idea. Of course, when his son hit his teens Bowie gave him the same advice he himself had ignored. This aspect of David Bowie I can relate to; the wisdom and experience gained over a lifetime makes us look back and regret some of our younger attitudes and actions. We long for our children to learn from our mistakes, our experience, what we have learnt, but we have to admit that we cannot control them and they will make their own decisions, both good and bad. As I watch my children (20 and 16) grow into adulthood I long for them to heed my advice but I have to stand to one side. As a Christian, I do not feel helpless in this but rather I can continue to entrust them to God’s care and protection knowing that, no matter what they may do, He will always be willing to forgive them their trespasses when they confess them. As Iman said just before her husband’s death: “The struggle is real, but so is God”. T TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 969696

Tickhill and District Lions Our January report was written to meet magazine deadlines inn early December when Santa’s sleigh runs had hardly started. Looking back we are happy that with the responsible and cheerful help of Scout Explorers and their leaders and a number of ‘Friends of Lions’ we were able to let as many people as possible know that Santa was on his way if they had not already heard him in the distance. Many thanks to everyone who joined us, especially those on the Clay Flat Lane area route on Saturday 12th December when it poured with rain. Many thanks also to Trevor Reeve and the Pentagon Group for the loan of the Jeep Grand Cherokee which pulled Santa’s sleigh around in fine style. With chocolate Easter Eggs already ordered we will have time during January and February to consider where we can provide financial support for worthy causes and projects which may improve the lives of others, especially in our local area. On Friday 5th February President Steve Radford and Lion Bryan Winslow will be joining Michelle, the landlady of the Oak, and eighteen others attempting to walk on hot coals to raise Sponsorship in aid of Little Heroes Cancer Trust. Look out for sponsorship forms, there is bound to be one in The Oak, or turn up for a beer on the night and see who gets blisters! Date for your diaries. On Friday 24th June we are holding our second ‘Summer Bash’ in a marquee behind the Scarbrough Arms, featuring live music, good food and real ales served in a private bar. An evening for music lovers and Lions supporters not to miss. community He said “The incentive offers people of all abilities and ages the chance to join scheduled events or dedicated clubs that will help them achieve their fitness goals whilst supporting those fighting cancer. I believe that not only does staying fit and healthy improve your well-being, but doing it for such a local, worthy cause makes it a win-win scenario.” The charity, which raised over £1.8 million last year to support vital projects within the hospital, has 3 dedicated ‘& Raise’ clubs where those raising funds for the cancer charity can do so alongside other fundraisers as part of ‘Team Weston Park’.

Former referee urges region to embrace fitness for cancer charity A former referee, who was awarded an MBE for his services to football, is supporting Weston Park hospital by urging people to support a charity ‘New Year, New You’ initiative. Howard Webb, from Rotherham, who is Patron of Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is encouraging people to think of the charity and offer support through various sporting activities across the year.

Charity Fundraiser, Sarah Cross said “From our annual Run in the Park event to public events, we want everyone from beginners to experienced fitness fanatics to join Team Weston Park this year and vow to support our work.” “The charity and hospital are facing a growing challenge with the expectation that by 2020, 1 in 2 of us are expected to be affected by cancer in our lifetime. It is only with the support of our dedicated fundraisers who take on selfless challenges for us that we can continue to support the hospital’s vital work and ensure more patients in our region can fight this disease. ” To find out more about joining the cancer charity’s dedicated ‘& Raise’ clubs and for tips to get fit visit the website at: http:// wphcancercharity.org.uk/run_and_raise.html T

Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity raises funds to support world-class research, treatment and care for cancer patients in South Yorkshire and beyond. This year with Howard’s backing, the charity is urging people to pull their trainers on and run, walk or ride to help raise vital funds for the hospital whilst simultaneously improving their own fitness levels. Howard, who got together with the charity’s Mascot, Westie, a few weeks ago, has filmed some short video clips to encourage people to take part in a sporting activity or challenge during 2016. 24

Update from Councillor

Rachael Blake It’s been a busy and interesting January dealing with current concerns, opportunities to think about how we celebrate some of our past as well as being involved in our future.

with DMBC. Some residents had voiced their concern that neighbouring authorities were doing more to celebrate their connections so the purpose of the meeting was to highlight this. I have asked the DMBC officer to attend both Austerfield PC and Bawtry TC to talk about possible plans – the meeting last week in Austerfield was well received with the councillors suggesting events that could be arranged – I will include more details in future updates. Finally on the past, it would be remiss of me not to mention the Flying Scotsman, the legendary locomotive which was built in Doncaster in 1923 which has been overhauled and will be at the National Railway Museum for some of the year as well as making a number of journeys including on the East Coast Main line in February. Another part of our great heritage and whilst many of the journeys are sold out already, it will be spectacular viewing for steam train enthusiasts of all ages.

Firstly the current concerns………

The Neighbourhood Planning Event which is being held in Bawtry is a fantastic opportunity for residents to influence the future of Bawtry. I am delighted that I have been involved in the planning group with the residents and businesses that have worked really hard to put the event together. Please take the time to pop in and have your say.

The lack of bin collections after Christmas and in particular for Bawtry, the recycling has been a concern and an inconvenience for residents. The delays were due to a number of problems that the contractors, SUEZ (formerly SITA) had, but I and many councillors voiced our concerns very loudly to our cabinet member, with an expectation that this situation will not happen again. If your bin/box is not collected, please report it to DMBC on 736000 or the Doncaster Council website. The concrete posts on Doncaster road ( just before the Kingswood estate) are going to be removed, and reseeding and planting taking place in the spring - this has taken longer than expected but I contact the tree team on a regular basis to check on progress, as I do about the trees on Gresley, which I was informed had been cut back, but when I went to look, only some had, so the problem with the sweeper not being able to clean the road, as well as the overhanging trees being a hazard still remained. I have been back in touch with DMBC and this work is going to be completed. Re-lining on South Parade, the flashing 20mph signs on Station Road at school times and the 20mph road markings on South Avenue are just 3 of the issues that I am regularly in touch with Highways on to get an update. I was pleased to see the 20mph sign on the road. The flooding problem on Station Road outside the surgery has also been reported and will be looked into, along with the similar problems between Bawtry and Bawtry Paintballing. Anything else of concern? Please get in touch. Now to the past….. William Bradford and his connections to both Austerfield and Bawtry were the subject of a recent meeting I had 32

community 2008 (BAWTRY) SQUADRON Well 2015 was a busy year for our Bawtry Air Cadets. They paraded, marched, climbed, swam, abseiled and flown through 2015 and they have become better Cadets for it. Their experiences will be great memories for them in the future. Some of our Cadets have been lucky enough to travel abroad on International Camps and experience something very special. Other cadets have also had unique experiences such as meeting and having a very close encounter with the fabulous Red Arrows, abseiling down the side of cliffs in the Lake District, sailing in Scotland or learning all about the intricate workings of the wonderful Avro Vulcan. With the help of one of our staff CI Victoria Aldridge, we chose to donate Christmas items for the homeless and also children from poverty stricken families. With the help of ST Oswald’s Primary in Finningley, we collected many items that our Cadets then used to create giftboxes, these were delivered to Hallam FM to use in their Mission For Christmas appeal. Items collected for the homeless such as food, toiletries and warm clothing were being stored in CI Aldridge’s vehicle over night. Sadly her van was broken into and many items were taken including all the food and toiletries. Once reported to the local area on Facebook and the Doncaster Free Press

Successful Pet Food Collection in Austerfield Christmas 2015 saw another wonderful pet food collection from the people of Austerfield. Willow Hartshorn from Austerfield and her school friend Alice organised a leaflet drop 1 week prior to Christmas asking people to help the Mayflower Animal Sanctuary, Bawtry, by donating food, blankets and toys. On the date of the collection people were to leave their donation on their doorstep and it would be collected by the girls. 34

Bawtry Today

more donations poured in and the items were replaced 10 times over and the huge delivery took place a few days before Christmas and their reaction was over whelming. CI Aldridge would like to thank the Air Cadets, the children of St Oswald’s as well as the surrounding community for all their donations and support. To end the year the cadets were treated to a night of bowling and also some fun and laughter at the annual Christmas party. And so now we look forward to events of 2016 and the extra special 60th Anniversary of 2008 Bawtry Squadron as well as the 75th year of the Air Cadet Corps. T

Willow and Alice were overwhelmed by the generosity. 2014's collection was huge but was topped by 2015. Willow said, ''I'm very grateful to all the people of Austerfield who helped me and contributed to the pet food collection. This means so much because not only we but the animals need a Christmas too. As young people we are responsible for future animal welfare. Let’s make Christmas 2016 a massive one for the Mayflower Animal Sanctuary. Its easy to arrange a collection, even if you only do your street or your class. Together we make a huge difference and if the Animals could say Thank you they would. Thank you!'' T

garden view

By Rachel Leverton

What to get the gardener in your life this Valentine’s Day? Want a romantic gift for your gardening Valentine? For a gardener a real romantic gesture is one that will last longer than cut flowers, and many gardeners are eco-friendly, so when you think of all the paper, yards of cellophane, and airmiles clocked up by exotic blooms, a living plant suddenly seems like a good option. Potted plants are more suggestive of permanent affection, and on a purely practical level, they give much better value for money! Jasmine, stephanotis and gardenias are fragrant and glamorous, or try a passionflower vine, wound round a heart-shaped support. What could be more romantic than that? We think of red roses as being the bloom of romance so what better than an entire bush of them that promises years of pleasure ahead. One problem with rose bushes is that they are not at their best in February, and will most likely resemble a bunch of thorny twigs in a pot! But if your Valentine is a keen gardener I guarantee they will not mind. In fact they will enjoy the anticipation of the future blooms. 38

Bawtry Today

Myrtle is another plant you might like to consider. It’s been associated with love since Roman times and is still used in wedding bouquets. With its neat glossy evergreen leaves and clusters of fragrant, fluffy white flowers followed by purple berries, Myrtis communis is a plant of quiet good taste. If planted in a sheltered spot it can eventually grow into a tree up to 5m tall. If you want to give a flower in bloom at the moment try a potted camellia, winter honeysuckle, violas, or an orchid. These plants are all associated with love and longing. Most florists will stock a range of flowering plants so you won’t need to head off your high street to find something suitable. If you simply must hand over a bunch of cut flowers, try to choose blooms grown in the mild climate of the Scilly Isles as environmentallyfriendly alternatives to exotic species flown in from the other side of the globe. ‘Paperwhite’ narcissi are beautifully scented and available now. With just a little thought you can come up with the perfect gift for the gardener in your life. TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 744278 969696

Bawtry Town Council - FEBRUARY 2016 MEMORIAL SPORTS GROUND

GAINSBOROUGH ROAD TOILETS

We have again suffered a break in at the pavilion on the field by cutting a hole in the roof which could contain asbestos and is a potential health hazard. We are taking expert advice from an environmental company to make the site safe and then we can undertake repairs.

Once again the Gents toilets have been vandalised and defaced. The council has supported this facility as it is seen to be an asset to the town. We must consider though if we can continue with the facility if this mindless vandalism continues to take place. If anyone has seen any inappropriate activity here we would be grateful for any information received.

MARKET HILL Christmas Eve saw over 500 people attend the Carol’s around the tree event organised by Bawtry Churches Together and despite the cold was enjoyed by everyone. It was pleasing to see how well Bawtry looked this year with lights and decorations by the council and Businesses alike. Many compliments have been voiced.

PLANNING The council has been active in responding to many planning submissions with local knowledge to DMBC. Residents and Businesses are welcome to attend BTC meetings and there is a 15 minute time frame for specific questions from you to be put to council. Please come along and get involved. If you have any problems with the roads or pavements around Bawtry you can contact highways at DMBC on 736000.

SPEED LIMITS 20 mph signs are now up on South Avenue and flashing 20 mph signs are due to be erected on Station Road. Police and Crime We have asked for a more regular attendance of Police officers at BTC meetings. Pact meetings are now to be held once per month on a rota basis around the region.

NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN There will be a major consultation event at the Crown Hotel in Bawtry concerning our plan on 11th February 2016 from 2pm to 9pm. 44

Do you love Bawtry? Are you happy with the state of the town? Do you agree with the way it is developing?

HAVE YOUR SAY ON THE FUTURE OF BAWTRY

EXHIBITION AT THE CROWN HOTEL Thursday 11th FEBRUARY 14.00 – 21.00 Planning decisions are made by the Local Planning Authority – in our case, that’s Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council. They do consult, but their decisions don’t always appear to reflect residents’ preferences. A Neighbourhood Plan – if there is one - obliges the Local Authority to take those views into account. Once a Plan is made and ratified (via a referendum) it becomes part of planning law. The Plan can also include other, non planning, issues that are important to the residents. These could include such things as traffic, parking, footpath and highway problems etc. Bawtry Town Council agreed that a Neighbourhood Plan should be 46

made, and a Steering Group has been working on it for several months now. We distributed a questionnaire to all households and businesses in Bawtry, and we have consulted with the Town Council, Bawtry Residents’ Group, and other bodies. We think we’re succeeding in identifying what matters to Bawtry residents, but we need to check we’ve got it right! So we’ve organised an exhibition to display our work. Everyone is invited! We’ll have tea, coffee and squash and will be delighted to meet you and to see what you think.

Misson decides

Options ranged from retaining the Mill and building on the land along Bawtry Road to demolishing the Mill and building on the whole site including new premises for the existing businesses Following a view of each of the options and conversations with the Group everyone was handed a voting slip and asked to state their preference. Votes cast were anonymous and confidential by placing in a voting box especially created for the occasion The local community has voted overwhelmingly on the preferred content of any future development of the Misson Mill site with the demolition of the Mill and the construction of around 50 residential properties, new business facilities, retail with cafĂŠ and parkland at the core of the scheme The Misson Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group threw open the doors of Misson Community Centre on Sunday 6th December to give everyone an opportunity to vote on the redevelopment of Misson Mill with four options being presented and nearly two hundred people attended and cast their vote at this busy time of the year Following consultations with children, students, businesses and the local community and discussions with the Owners and Representative of Misson Mill, there were four options presented around the room with plans available and members of the Group on hand to answer any questions. There was also the option of doing nothing and leaving the Mill as it currently exists.

Of the votes cast 88% voted for the option that comprised approx 50 dwellings, a new employment zone for existing and new businesses and Misson Mill demolished. The option also had an area of parkland and open public space for the use of the community with the opportunity of a retail unit and cafĂŠ for the benefit of the businesses and the community The principles of the preferred option will be translated into policy and included in the Neighbourhood Plan. Following evaluation by Bassetlaw District Council the Plan will be shared with the local community at a public meeting and finally a referendum will be held in the Spring of 2016. The referendum will give everyone within the parish of Misson an opportunity to decide whether the Neighbourhood Plan should be adopted as policy and form the basis of any planning decisions for the next twenty years The Steering Group would like to thank everyone who took the opportunity to attend the meeting on a busy weekend before Christmas

Dear Friends,

The New You

I am writing this article in mid-January so I’m still thinking about things we have resolved to do to make us ‘new’ or ‘fresh’ in the year 2016.

suggest to you that spending time by meditating on the Holy Scriptures and praying to God will help you to think about your behaviour or thoughts.

Some of us are still evaluating our past and wondering what we can do to achieve the best for this year. Others are thinking of how best we can do things differently in order to maintain the best we have achieved so far.

These will help you to consider what you do or say and change the direction of your life in a positive way this year.

Some facts come to my mind and they are based on the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Romans in the bible. Chapter 12 versus 1 and 2 from ‘The Message’ translation state, “So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life - your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life - and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you”. The Apostle encourages us first to be ‘original’ as we engage with our culture. We are not to copy what we do not understand. Or, we are not to think that because every person is doing it or says so it is the right thing for us to do. Rather, it is best to ask God to help us in our decision-making. As God reveals to us his plans, do have the will to adjust in order to free our minds of any difficult issues. He can reveal his plans through the good books we read, the good conversations we have with other people, the programmes we watch or listen to, and so on. We all need a bit of transformation and God does it best for us. He will help us to change by the way we think. In addition, as a Christian, I wonder if I can 48

Bawtry Today

The following prayer was helpful to me a few days ago and I wonder if you can own it and use it as often times as possible. God, I praise you with all that I am, knowing that my strength comes from joy in you now and always. I praise you for your mercy, for forgiving my sins. Remind me that mercy always triumphs over judgment and that only you, the God of all grace, will restore me and make me strong. Renew my heart and let your gentle Spirit lead me down the right path. Please grant me peace in my heart. May my burdens lead me to rest in you as I grow closer to you each day. Let me fill my mind with truth, righteousness, beauty and all things worthy of praise. Thank you God for your promise to watch over me always and to hold me up with your victorious right hand. Thank you God for giving me a hope and a future. Let me take every action in the coming year fixing my eyes on Jesus. Amen. (Written by Melody; http://www. dayspring.com/articles/a-new-years-prayer) Have a blessed month. Yours sincerely,

A THANK YOU As indicated in the last newsletter, I retire officially at the end of January as Clerk to Bawtry Town Council after 37 years. I would like to place on record my grateful thanks to those residents, members of the Sports groups, press representative, ward councillor, and long standing councillors, who have been kind enough to contact me with words of appreciation and thanks, all of which have been greatly appreciated.

Bawtry Phoenix Theatre Company.

The British Heart Foundation is one of the most supported charities in the UK and it’s ‘Wear it, Beat it’ campaign, which takes place each February, is one of its most supported fund raising events. Once again, lots of retailers from our town are donning red for the day and doing special promotions in their shops, businesses and eateries. It takes place on Friday 5th this year and we hope that, as you are going about your business, you’ll do your bit to help raise vital funds for the valuable work this charity does. Staying with hearts it is of course Valentine’s Day – the perfect occasion to show the one you love what they mean to you either in person or anonymously! There is a great range of gifts available from gorgeous underwear from & She Knows, fashion treats from anyone of the myriad of boutiques in the town, or just treat them from a night off from cooking with dinner at one of our fantastic restaurants. Or, you could treat the whole family and enjoy lunch or dinner with all those that you love! This year is the “Year of the Monkey’ when the Chinese New Year takes place on Monday 8th February. ‘Monkey’s’ are considered to be witty, intelligent and have a magnetic personality so if that applies to you make sure you organise celebrations at the China Rose restaurant. Looking ahead it’s the fourth Bawtry Fashion Week between 10th and 17th March. Lots of fashion, hair and beauty retailers will be supporting the week with events, shows and offers so be sure to keep your eyes open as more details are confirmed.

Tuesday 12th April 12.45 – 3.30pm & 4.30-7.15pm

NOT ALL DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IS PHYSICAL THE EMOTIONAL INJURIES CAN BE JUST AS DAMAGING It is a sad fact that many people, both men and women are the victims of domestic abuse from a partner who is never physically violent to them. This abuse takes the sinister form of controlling, often verbally abusive behaviour which completely undermines the other person’s self -confidence, making them feel stupid and worthless and constantly afraid to do or say anything

which might upset their partner. Very often abusers work hard to isolate their victim from family or other people who could support them. Fans of the long running radio series “The Archers” will know that pregnant Helen Tichener is being controlled and abused emotionally by her husband Rob, who is steadily cutting her off from her family and old friends. The good news is that the Family Courts now recognise this type of abuse for what it is and can act to protect victims and their children by means of a Non-Molestation order or, if necessary, an Occupation Order requiring the abuser to move out of the family home. Legal Aid is still available for this type of case, subject to financial assessment, and once the court makes an order against an abusive partner, it is possible to apply for legal aid to deal with divorce and finances too.
