How sad would be November if we didn’t have knowledge of the Spring?
Edwin Way Teale The year is racing by, Halloween is upon us and Christmas is only just around the corner! I have spent several days in October accompanying my son as he visits University Open Days. It has brought back many happy memories of my own time at University. Many aspects of campuses remain the same as they were in the 90’s although it has been apparent everywhere we have been, that huge investment has been made in buildings and facilities – not least the student accommodation, where ensuites are now the expected norm! I mentioned last month that we had been shortlisted for four business awards at the 2015 National Magazine Publisher’s Awards. If you follow our facebook page you will already know that I was thrilled to come home with 2 awards that night. Our newly redesigned website won ‘Best Website’ and the cartoon video that features on the website also won an award in the ‘Best Promotional Video’ category. It is lovely to receive some recognition within the industry that we are doing something right, and spending time with so many other fabulous magazine producers, many of whom have become my friends is one of the highlights of my working year. The December issue will be delivered to you late November. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 13th November. The December magazines always contain the most community content of the year, and as levels of submissions are already at a record high, I must urge you to get your items to me on time, so that I can ensure that sufficient space is available for everything. This does apply to advertising bookings too!

Certificates and Rosettes were presented to each of the winners. Apple Identification by Fruitscape and an Apple Pressing demonstration by Lou Hartshorne kept the visitors attention. Bawtry WI Firstly, I must apologise for the last edition, I omitted to say we were not meeting on 21st October as normal, due to the fact it was our 3rd birthday and we went out for a meal. If anyone turned up at the Bawtry New Hall, I do apologise. In September we were all enthralled by Kim Sutton from Blythe Craft Studio who came along and demonstrated a number of ways to decorate a variety of household objects. Kim showed us Napkin Art, Brush Stroke Painting & Crackle Glazing. On WI Day, 16th September we held a Treasure Trail around Bawtry where teams followed clues and ended up back at the Library for refreshments. There was the usual array of buns & cakes. A tombola raised over £20. Our next meeting is the AGM on 18th November. We meet in the New Hall Bawtry on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 7.15pm for 7.30pm. A warm welcome to anyone along who would like to visit or join. T

Tradition and Excellence Combined at South Axholme Academy's Sixth Form South Axholme Academy offers a traditional school 6th Form provision, building on the excellent teaching and learning record achieved with students through Years 7 to 11. The recently opened 6th Form at the Academy is managed by Vice Principal Andy Driver an established science practitioner, and A level physics teacher with a wealth of educational experience. In addition to this, we are pleased to have secured the appointment of Maria Rock who led an outstanding Doncaster school. During her headship, 6th Form numbers increased greatly. Maria’s expertise is being utilised to ensure that 6th Formers at South Axholme Academy enjoy a similarly excellent level of teaching and provision. Dedicated 6th Form pastoral staff complement Andy and Maria in caring for and managing students on all levels. In its infancy, South Axholme 6th Form offers a unique personalised A level experience, with small numbers of students and dedicated staff to take care of academic and pastoral issues.
South Axholme 6th Form is able to offer everything a traditional school 6th Form can, with students at the heart of everything that we do. If you are looking to continue your studies in a fully supported, carefully managed, local, friendly environment, with professional, experienced staff South Axholme is for you. Transport available from Doncaster, including Branton, Auckley, Blaxton, Finningley and Bawtry. Don’t leave your future to chance. Make a positive choice and join the team at South Axholme Academy. Misson Memories With support from Lafarge-Tarmac Limited, Misson Parish Council is celebrating the rich history and heritage of the village. The Landfill Communities Fund grant will enable two new pictorial village signs to be commissioned using images suggested by villagers and Misson Primary school children. The signs will illustrate Misson in bygone days and also represent Misson in current times. In addition, the grant will fund two large floral planters, an information lectern on the village green and pamphlets to promote the village heritage linking to parish footpaths and bridleways.
As part of the project, on the 26 August, a successful Misson Memories event took place in the community centre. Anyone who was interested or had memories of old village life was invited to attend. Over 30 villagers past and present shared their cherished photographs and memorabilia. It was clear that so many people enjoy and feel it is important to remember the past, whether the memories are of family, friends, village life, or as often the case, all these combined. In the coming months the conversations, which were started on that day, will hopefully continue as old photographs are scanned and archived on paper and digitally. We hope this will prompt even more memories as the intention is to establish the beginnings of an oral history project to ensure that the voices and stories of old Misson are preserved. Of particular interest is to hear and record stories and memories of living a rural working life, leisure time, childhood memories, village characters, activities at the Crop Dryers, and even of the Cold War and bombing range activities at the Rocket Site in Misson Springs We hope that even more villagers past and present will search out their old photographs and items that they feel are interesting, relating to life in Misson. The aim is that all the material the Parish Council currently possesses on Misson heritage, any new items and our oral history recordings will be available for everyone to access on the ‘Misson Hub’ and ultimately archived at Bassetlaw Museum in Retford. Did you know that Misson’s heritage can be traced as far back as 9000 BC? Neolithic and Mesolithic flints, Roman, Anglo Saxon, Medieval remains and artefacts found in the parish are held in Bassetlaw Museum archives.
If you can, please take the time to look at the village blog ‘Misson hub’ where you will find interesting old photographs and current village news. For further information or if you have any specialist skills that may help us please contact Sue Scott, Misson Parish Clerk at missonparish@tiscali.co.uk or Cllr Julie Watkins at julie@hobsonhague.co.uk
FIXED FEE Family Law
Do you need advice about a family problem but worry about the cost? We understand that costs are a significant concern. We offer fixed fees for family law services wherever possible. This may cover either the whole of an agreed plan of action, or dealing with a specific stage in the process. Even if your case is not suitable for a fixed fee we will give you a realistic estimate of the fees to be incurred. If you are on a low income or certain benefits, you may be exempt from paying all or part of any Court fees. Legal aid is still available for some family problems involving domestic violence, where social services are involved with children or where an agreement has been reached in mediation. Legal Aid is also available to cover the cost of attending mediation, and will cover the costs of BOTH parties, even if only one party qualifies for Legal Aid.

An active family agenda in Greece. Lee Jackson Report from
Our first experience of a family holiday the Mark Warner way had come pretty late. With our children now 13 and 14 years of age we would not benefit from their highly acclaimed childcare and entertainment but our thinking was that there could be just enough activities to keep our teenagers entertained for a week. It was the activities that drew us to Mark Warner’s Levante Beach resort on the popular Greek island of Rhodes. Our holidays in the past have mostly been driven by the destination and a desire to explore the local region. But this time around we were entirely set on the opportunity to holiday amongst like-minded families and to follow a more active family agenda. We had no designs on travel beyond our resort although there would be lots of opportunity to do so. On arrival it was crystal clear that we would not be short of something to do all week. These days the idea of attending a welcome meeting from the tour company seems a dated and unnecessary task but with a “to do” list as long as our arms we needed to know where and when to take a full part. After the warm welcome to the resort we were given briefs on opening times and protocol for water-sports, tennis and biking, and details of when and where the children could join the respective club for their age group. Our 13 year old daughter had within an hour of arrival created a day one schedule more appropriate for an Olympian decathlete! For me the main focus of the week would be on the tennis courts, including a 4 day group academy course with a private lesson and evening drills. On the first day following introduction to the
of Bliss Travel
academy group we all share our respective abilities so that the coaches can tailor the coaching to suit our grade. The camaraderie amongst the group develops quickly and the first academy session is quickly followed by games with newly found acquaintances. With social tennis and an evening drill also in the schedule all in all the first days ball hitting effort is an energy sapping five hours. For someone who has long dreamed of spending a week hitting tennis balls in the sun the aches and pains are merely testament to great start to the holiday. As I make my way down to the beach to cool off in the waves it is evident that there is plenty of relaxation taking place in between the sporting activity. The choice of three pools offers family, adult and children’s bathing options and just beyond these is the beach with the aquamarine water of the Mediterranean Sea. On checking progress with the family it seems that my daughter’s high intensity workout prompted a rethink on the activity schedule and a diversion to the water-sports centre for a slightly more holiday friendly training regime. Not that this reflected any reduction in her determination not to waste a single minute. Windsurfing, sailing and scuba diving soon follow and with the help of the small army of Mark Warner experts she soon has a grasp of the various techniques. In fact my daughter’s confidence on the water is clearly on show when she takes out a small dinghy to introduce
herself to sailing. Earlier in the day I arrange a lesson for my son, wife and I so that we can learn the basics of the sport. My wife decides to watch from the instructor’s motor boat, and my son handles the boat with ease. My progress is not so straightforward as it is only after five capsizes of the dinghy that I find the required technique. Not that in all of this adventure there is any real risk of danger. The sailing section of the water is completely patrolled by sea and shore based Mark Warner staff who reach any capsized craft in seconds, most of the time with the error prone learner laughing in the water in the safety of their buoyancy aid. As the week proceeds we work our way through mountain biking trips, water skiing, kayaking and my wife is inspired to keep up her gym sessions in between a more relaxed but equally popular regime of sunbathing. My Tennis gets better then worse with each session but the evening social games bring the enjoyment of competitive games and greater confidence. Meanwhile down on the beach my daughter is warmly acclaimed as a natural sailor and then rounds off a week of non-stop activity with the ladies first position in the weekly resort triathlon.

DRAWN TOGETHER AGAIN he took up the challenge of opening up his gallery in Bawtry, where he is only too willing to give assistance and offer information, not only his own work, but that of many leading artists in the vast range of traditional, contemporary and affordable art he has on display. It was here where he met up with artist Margaret Clarkson who, although born in Rotherham, moved into Doncaster some forty five years ago teaching art in Doncaster schools.
Doncaster has featured predominantly in the working lives of two Yorkshire born artists, John Bird and Margaret Clarkson. They are drawn together yet again at the John Bird Studio in Bawtry on Saturday November 7th. John Bird is a Doncaster born local lad who spent four years at Doncaster Rovers before moving on as a player and then as a manager. After leaving his football career behind, John pursued his long term interest as an artist. He had previously set up his own gallery whilst in Newcastle which he ran successfully for eight years. He returned to Doncaster and many will remember his unit at the Doncaster Corn Exchange. A few years ago
She has been involved in art education for over fifty years. Teaching art, giving demonstrations to a wide variety of groups, where her sense of humour and ability to involve an audience, made her illustrated talks very popular. She set up and ran her own gallery for ten years and eventually started publishing her own work and having it distributed nationally. Her work has been featured in many national, regional, and local magazines and book illustrations. Margaret’s work, by way of original watercolour paintings and limited edition prints is reminiscent of life spent in and around her Yorkshire home during the 1940s / 50s and every picture certainly does tell a story. Whilst she considers her work is not strictly autobiographical, it is certainly based on her childhood memories. “I think the reason the paintings are so popular is they bring back happy memories. I feel I have been successful and achieved so much, particularly in times like we live in today, if I can bring humour and fond memories with my artwork,” she said. Margaret’s art work is always on display and each year they have a successful Open Day at the John Bird Studio on Dower House Square, Bawtry. She is looking forward to this Year’s Open Day on Saturday November 7th between 10am and 4pm. T

ZZZzzzzzzz… Following on from last month’s article on mattresses, here’s what you need to know about pillows to add the final ingredient for a good night’s sleep… The purpose of a pillow is to keep your head, neck and spine in line. The thickness of your ideal pillow will depend on the size of your frame and the position you sleep in. If you sleep on your back you will only need a slim pillow just to prevent your head and neck from tipping back. Side sleepers will need a thicker pillow to fill the space between your shoulder and the side of your head. The bigger your frame, the larger this gap will be. Sleeping on your tummy is best avoided as it is impossible to keep your head and neck in a neutral position. It’s actually quite difficult for us to accurately determine the position of different body parts so the best way to judge a pillow is to adopt your usual sleep position and then ask someone else to look and see if your head, neck and spine are still in line. Pillows generally last 3-5 years, but there is a quick test to see if it’s still up to the job. Fold a feather pillow in half, squeezing out all the air. When you let go, it should spring back into shape. Fold synthetic pillows in half and place a small weight on it (decent paperback or a trainer). The pillow should fling off the weight as it springs back to shape! Sleep well!

Colin (The Power) Bower The team at Bawtry Gym would like your help in raising funds for our young friend and colleague, Colin ‘The Power’ Bower, aged 24, who sadly lost his fight to Hodgkin’s Lymphoma during October at the age of just 24. Those of you who have trained at Bawtry gym, will remember Colin as a younger teenager always working out, eventually going on to become a personal trainer helping members at our gym. As a former rugby player for East Retford RUFC, and a local resident, Colin was a valued part of our community. Colin had a keen passion for health, fitness and natural bodybuilding, and prior to his diagnosis just a few months ago, was the fittest, strongest, cleanest-living 24-year old you could meet. Not to mention the humblest and gentlest. Which makes his diagnosis of this extremely rare and fast-growing “Hepatosplenic T-cell” lymphoma all the more tragic. Forget GBBO! Forget Strictly! As the evenings draw in, curl up on the sofa with a good book instead and wrap yourself in the mystery of the Entanglement trilogy by Chris Brookes. Chris is a local author who came to talk to us at our September meeting about his writing and the inspiration for his novels and left us all wanting to hear - and certainly read - much more. It was an excellent evening and we can thoroughly recommend him if you are looking for a good speaker - and can recommend his books if you are looking for Christmas presents! Our meeting on 28th October will give us an opportunity to learn some new skills when our sister group, Thimbles of Misson, will demonstrate and encourage us to make Japanese folded patchwork, Suffolk puffs for napkin rings and various other craft items to appeal to our creative sides and motivate us to make beautiful gifts for Christmas. Anita Love, from Phoenix cards will further motivate us to think about the approaching festive season as she displays a range of beautiful gift wrappings and she will also be selling Christmas cards. As always, our activities will be accompanied by an endless supply of refreshments, including homemade cake. We always have time for a chat and would love you to join us. We meet on the last Wednesday of every month at 7.30 pm at the Community Centre, Vicar Lane, Misson; don’t hesitate to turn up, or phone our secretary, Lynda Redfern on 07796975578 for any further information. Misson Pre School is a good Pre School – OfSTED celebrations. Children and staff at Misson Pre School are celebrating the official release of their latest OfSTED report that recognises the Pre School as a ‘good’ Pre School. During her visit on 17th September the inspector concluded that ‘the manager utilises the strengths of the highly qualified staff team, in order to promote good outcomes for the children.’ They went on to say ‘Literacy and mathematics are very well taught and children have good opportunities to extend their learning due to the consistently high level of teaching.’ She was so impressed by what she saw during the inspection that at the end of her visit she added that the Pre School was in a strong position to become an
outstanding Pre School. She noted that ‘children’s confidence and emotional well-being are given high priority.’ The manager, Sarah Taylor, was praised as she ‘demonstrates clear motivation to continually develop the pre-school.’ Sarah praised all of the staff after the inspection saying, ‘The staff and I work extremely hard to ensure that pre-school is a wonderful place that the children will enjoy. The staff’s tireless dedication has shone through and we are all thrilled with the result.’ Misson Pre School is a charity run, committee led Pre School who have been operating for 30 years and the whole team and community are extremely proud of this latest achievement. Pastor’s Page Are you feeling impoverished yet? It is now a month since we have been subjected to an extra cost in our lives; that of 5p for a throwaway plastic bag. On Monday 4 October the media made it sound like our society was about to collapse under a chaos of debt and confusion. Given the amount of bags full of bags accumulated in a corner of my kitchen I think we should be able to cope, provided we remember to take a few with us to the shops. The fact that a supermarket bag will probably rip open before you’ve got it to your car somehow doesn’t stop it taking over 500 years to decompose. Each one of us gets through 216 of these things a year which adds up to a billion or so in England clogging up landfill sites or hanging off trees with dog poop in them (why do people do that?). And we know that hundreds of animals choke or are otherwise killed by plastic bags, so any measure to get rid of them has to be a good thing all round. But to think that the bag I carried my baked beans and sliced bread home in last week will still be around in 500 years is quite frightening; imagine digging your garden and finding a bag used by contemporary of Oliver Cromwell, and one from the time of William Wilberforce, and one from a patient of Florence Nightingale. In the year 2515 someone could well be digging their garden and find that bag I brought home
from the corner shop; they will probably imagine it was one used by Winston Churchill or someone equally influential. Rubbish accumulates not only in the corner of the kitchen but also in the corners of our lives – I’m thinking of when we’ve lost our temper and hurt someone, the times when we’ve said something so stupid it still invades our mind decades later, when we’ve deliberately hurt those closest to us, or when we’ve been at the receiving end of these things. How long do these memories take to decompose? Like the carrier bag - a lot longer than we’re comfortable with. But they can still be dealt with/ put in their place/ held in perspective. We need to remember that the vast majority of people we come across are pleasant and respectful, that we are more likely to say pleasant things than negative things, that we generally treat people well, etc. And, more importantly, we need to remember some of the wonderful promises God has made to us, promises like; “Come to me, all of you who are tired from carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest.” and “I am the God who forgives your sins, I will not hold your sins against you.” Every time a bit of rubbish comes into our lives we need to deal with it, not store it up in a corner, else our minds will end up like the ¼ million square mile drifting island of plastic in the Pacific Ocean – and that is not a pretty sight. Tickhill Music Society - Tickhill Music Society Friday, 13th November 2015 at 8.00 p.m. Concert Review St. Mary’s Primary School The first concert of the Winter season was held in the airy spaciousness of St. Mary’s Parish Church. Our guest artist was the Sub-Organist from Leeds Parish Church, David Houlder. He began with Suite Gothique by Léon Boëllmann (1862-1897) a four movement work with an Introduction of stately chords, a jolly choral, a placid third movement and a march-like Toccata to end. Next came J.S.Bach with a tuneful Cantata 156 and the popular ‘Sheep may safely graze’
Master Tallis’s Testament by Herbert Howells (18921983) had three verses starting quietly and getting louder. Rondoletto by the Lancastrian Ernest Tomlinson was a Country Dance tune in the Light Music tradition. The first half ended with the theme tune from ‘Songs of Praise‘ commissioned by the BBC in 1980. After the Interval more theme music from more recent ‘Songs of Praise’ programmes. This was a lively piece by the aptly named Robert Prizeman and has been used since 1986. The Prelude and Fugue in C Minor by Vaughan Williams was not in his popular pastoral style but a much more robust affair, the Fugue being a complex double fugue. Departing somewhat from the Western music tradition, the piece by the Nigerianborn Fela Sowande, “Obangiji” had a bold introduction followed by some complex harmonies. The contemporary composer Derek Bourgeois wrote his Serenade for his own wedding. It had a jaunty tune followed by some intricate variations rising to a climax and then fading away. Mr Houlder explained that parts were in complex 11/8 time. In fact, several times Mr Houlder gave us some helpful comments about the music. The concert ended with Fantasia & Ground Bass by Sir George Dyson. This had free-flowing variations which climbed to a real mountain of sound giving a triumphant end to a splendid concert. The season has got off to a splendid start! Philip Mottram T

A Message for Everyone Interested in the Piano Learning how to play the piano can be a very lonely process, taking years of dedicated study.
All types of music will be welcome (Classics, Modern, Popular, Folk and Jazz).
Often when progress is made and a repertoire is beginning to develop, a pianist finds it difficult to perform in front of any type of audience because of nerves and lack of confidence.
The essential message is that it is the members who perform and present the music.
We propose to start a club to provide a small friendly group of people of all ages, with an interest in the piano, to encourage and support performance, and a venue at which pianists of all levels can meet people with a similar interest. Everyone is welcome, it does not matter if you are unable to read music, have passed a Grade 1 exam or hold a Diploma or Degree in Music, or simply have no interest in gaining qualifications and just like to play the piano or keyboard. Members may elect not to play but just to listen and provide moral support. However, the number of members wishing to play will be strictly limited to ensure all have an adequate opportunity to play.
We also hope to have a social aspect to the club, and to arrange club visits to various venues, possibly to play some music at hotels, piano manufacturers, restorers and large retailers. The Club membership will play a major role in determine the activities and interests of the piano club, and when, where and how often we meet. So it is important that you attend this first meeting and have your say if you are able to. If you can’t or haven’t received your magazine in time, then don’t worry simply contact David Kay on 01302 538537 for more information and to register your interest. Please come and join us at the first meeting of our club: 7:45pm on Tuesday 27th OCTOBER 2015 At St Wilfrid’s Church, Church Lane, Cantley T
Tickhill & District Lions Club This year’s bonfire display will be held on Saturday 7th November at the Tickhill Cricket Club on Alderson Drive, with the evening organised jointly by our Lions Club and the Cricket Club. Entry is free but the Lions will be rattling buckets with all the proceeds going towards deserving causes within the local community. Your donations are greatly appreciated. The bonfire will be lit at 5.30pm with the fireworks let off in 2 sessions, the first starting at 6pm. The firework display will be on the playing area with excellent visibility all round the boundary so young children will be able to find somewhere with a good view. Novelties and glow sticks will be available but health and safety rules do not allow the lighting of sparklers, and with the cricket club
bar open, the bringing of your own cans etc. will not be allowed. We would ask everyone to respect the hallowed turf of the cricket field and to please use the litter bins. There will be a barbecue selling locally supplied burgers and sausages. Lions Christmas draw tickets are now available with a wide range of super prizes on offer. Tickets will be available on our stall at the Tickhill late Night Shopping event on Thursday 26th November and a number of retail outlets round the district. The draw will take place on Tuesday 15th December, by which time the Christmas float will have transported Santa round Harworth & Bircotes and will have started on his visits to Rossington. Make sure you don’t miss him. A full list of float dates and start times will appear in next month’s magazine. T

Garden Bonfires November seems a good month to talk about bonfires. I’m not actually a huge fan of the garden bonfire; I think that generally there are better ways of disposing of garden waste. Most green waste, such as leaves or grass can be recycled. Woody waste can be shredded and either composted or used as mulch, though it may be more cost-effective to hire a shredder rather than buy one outright if your garden is small. But if wood is diseased a bonfire may be the best way to deal with it. So what are the rules regarding garden bonfires? Rather surprisingly there are no specific laws against having a bonfire, or when you can have one. There may be local by-laws though: laws made by a local authority and applicable only in a defined geographical area. Phone your council or check their website for further information. If you rent a property you’ll need to check under your tenancy agreement too, in order to find out whether bonfires are permitted. Laws about bonfires are generally concerned with their potential nuisance value. So you can’t burn
plastics, or painted household waste which may produce toxic fumes or thick smoke harmful to asthma sufferers. Also, the Highways Act states that it is an offence to light a bonfire near a road if the drifting smoke may cause a traffic hazard. Mostly though bonfires are all about common sense. The smoke and smell from a fire might annoy your neighbours, especially if it prevents them from opening their windows or hanging out their washing. It’s polite to warn your neighbours beforehand; they may have an outdoor party planned or want to spend the afternoon pottering in their garden. Light your bonfire at a time least likely to cause a nuisance – remember on a warm sunny day people are more likely to be out in their garden, enjoying it. Only burn dry material because damp material creates a lot of smoke.
Bonfire Safety Check-list • Build the bonfire away from sheds, fences and trees • Don’t build it too large and make sure it’s stable, so it won’t collapse outwards or to one side. • Check the bonfire for hibernating wildlife. • Don’t use petrol or paraffin to start the fire as these accelerate the flames and may cause the fire to burn out of control. • Keep a bucket of water or a hose handy—just in case • Don’t leave the fire unattended. • Keep small children and pets out of the way. • Once the fire has died down, pour water over the embers to stop them re-igniting.

Remembrance and Memorials
Dear Friends, November is a month of memorials and remembrance. It includes All Saints’ Day, All Souls’ Day, and Remembrance Day, among others. Memorials help us to connect with our past. Remembering the past can help us or haunt us. It depends on what part of the past comes into our memory and how we have lived with it. Some of the memories can be very unpleasant and may need us to attend to them in order to move on with our lives. On the other hand, some memories encourage us and help us to rekindle the hope we have for the future. These memories mostly strengthen us in our endeavours. In my local dialect, the month of November is called ‘ ’ (pronounced ‘o-ba-re-fiw’), meaning ‘a life of beauty’. Talking about lives of beauty reminds us of people who have sacrificed their lives for our good. Such lives motivate most of us. In Christianity, we are encouraged to remember Jesus Christ, who died to save us from sin. As part of remembering Jesus’ death on the cross, Christians frequently meet to share the ‘Eucharist’. Other people call it the “Lord’s Supper” or ‘Holy Communion”. It is a time when we share bread and wine together. It is also a time when we are reminded of God’s love for the world. He loved us to the extent of sacrificing his son, Jesus Christ, for us. Moreover, the Lord’s Supper reminds us that each of us is united with God through his love. Hence, we are to love one another as God has loved us. 46

Talking of loving one another, I wonder if I can suggest that you make the following prayer yours. Bruce Prewer wrote it and it says: “God of Jesus and our God, mindful of all those choice souls who have gone on ahead of us, teach us to follow their example to the best of our ability: • to feed the poor in body or spirit, • to support and comfort the mourners and the repentant, • to encourage the meek and stand with them in crises, • to affirm those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, • to cherish and learn from the merciful, • to be humbled by, and stand with, the peacemakers”. This month, as you celebrate the events of remembrance and memorials, I wonder if you can take a moment and pause to reflect on how the examples of those who have gone before us can encourage you to love another person. Have a blessed month. Yours sincerely, Rev. CHRISTMAS IS COMING! We know that you all have so much to do as we build up to the festive season but we’re very excited to tell you of our plans for another super Christmas event this year. Our Christmas Time Event is to take place on Sunday 22nd November from 1pm until 8pm and will be a great event for all the family. There will be fairground rides including a traditional carousel, market stalls selling a range of gifts, live music, Hog roast and food and drink stalls, performances by Harworth Colliery Brass Band and a visit from Father Christmas who has managed to fit us in to his busy schedule as well as appearances from Doncaster Rovers and Doncaster Knights players. And Christmas in Bawtry wouldn’t be the same without the legendary unveiling of another iconic ‘Womack’s Christmas Window’. There will be a FREE Park and Ride shuttle bus service and details can be found at www.visitbawtry.com or our Facebook page /bawtryretailassociation. We hope to welcome as many of you as possible and don’t forget it will be business as usual for all our shops, cafes, bars and restaurants so you can have a really great afternoon with us. On Saturday 7th November local artist John Bird will be joined by Margaret Clarkson at his gallery in Dower House Square where you can meet and chat with them both about their work, their mutual love for art, education and Yorkshire. And, we send our warmest congratulations to the team at Robinsons of Bawtry. Their annual fashion show took place in October and they raised a massive £35,000 for Yorkshire Cancer Research, taking the total raised to just under £320,000 over the past 23 years. Next year
So, as we all start our preparations for the forthcoming festivities, remember to shop local, eat local, spend local and enjoy local – we’re lucky to have a great selection of businesses that can all help to make this a Christmas to remember. Bawtry Town Council - SEPTEMBER 2015 Newly elected councillors have undergone training to understand the roles they undertake, the councillors’ code of conduct and the workings and responsibilities of local government. Our new Ward Councillors representing Rossington & Bawtry ward attend BTC meetings and assist with dialogue with DMBC. Ward Councillor Rachael Blake in particular has been very active in pursuit of S106 monies promised to the BARS project to replace the old pavilion on the Memorial Sports Field. This money will support a number of much higher grants from various bodies to ensure that this project goes ahead in 2016. Rachel has also been very active in support of action for speed reduction on Station Road and we have a promise of 20mph limits during the time when children are travelling to and from the School The petition regarding Station Road has gathered momentum and we thank residents for their support on this very important issue. Following efforts by DMBC, the Mayflower School and the town council there is now a crossing warden back in post which should improve the situation. Speed reduction on all the major routes through the town is an important issue for the town council. As part of this initiative we will continue dialogue with DMBC regarding the extension of the 30 mph limit on Doncaster Road as far as Bawtry town boundary. Community Policing PCSOs attended the meeting in July along with their Inspector and reassured BTC that they will try to attend council meetings on a regular basis. There was a useful exchange of information and views and we must be mindful that the police service have had cutbacks in funding as with many DMBC areas. We are also to receive a visit from our Police and Crime Commissioner at our October meeting which we look forward to. DMBC Local Plan
Planning Officer, when she outlined the purpose of the plan and how our Neighbourhood Plan would inform the plan. This forms planning activity in the DMBC area and takes account of the needs to each community in the area. The information she brought to the meeting, along with further information on the DMBC website, will help us with the formation of our own Neighbourhood Plan. Comments on the Local Plan proposals have to be with DMBC by early September. The town council will be making a submission but we would also encourage all residents to make their own individual comments to DMBC. Neighbourhood Plan The group tasked by the council to develop a Neighbourhood Plan has started the work and will be working hard to bring it to fruition, hopefully towards the end of 2016. Many thanks to the residents who have already responded to the questionnaire and it is not too late to join in. The group has produced a short questionnaire which can be found in the community library and residents are encouraged to complete it with their views and submit it to the group via the library. If you are interested in becoming involved with this plan please contact David Kirkham at davidkirkham@gmail.com. Litter and Dog Fouling Litter and dog fouling is becoming a particular issue in Bawtry. It has recently come to the attention of the council that the matter of dog fouling on both the MSG and the Wharf Street Play area is becoming a problem. Both of these areas are used by children and dog owners must take responsibility to clear up their dog’s mess in these areas. As such we will conduct a campaign to address this poor behaviour from some of our residents by improved signage and activities which will change the culture of dog fouling and litter in general in our beautiful town. We would encourage all residents to be vigilant and report any known offenders.
BTC had a presentation from Teresa Hubery, DMBC 54

community Traffic We are working with DMBC to restrict the number of HGVs coming through the town and presenting the clear risks to our residents, businesses, and visitors alike. The proposed link road to the M18 should improve the position but this will not be soon enough for safety to be maintained. Residents and businesses are welcome to attend BTC meetings and there is a 15 minute time frame for specific questions from you to be put to council. Please come along and get involved. If you have any problems with the roads or pavements around Bawtry you can contact highways at DMBC.

Update from Councillor
Rachael Blake A lovely busy month, meeting more residents and groups, getting a number of long standing problems sorted and having the pleasure of spending a few hours with Year 6 pupils to discuss the Neighbourhood Plan. Firstly a few updates from last month. I shared the offer to provide a bus for Austerfield with the Parish Council, which was warmly received, but had funding implications due to the previous small numbers of passengers that used buses in the village. My discussions to find funding are ongoing and I will keep you updated. Another funding issue that I mentioned last time was the Section 106 contribution for the Community Sports Pavilion. After further meetings with DMBC officers, I was pleased to meet with Matthew from BARRS and provide him with a letter detailing the funding that will be available from S106 monies. Further funding bids are being put in and there is still a long way to go but it has been good to be involved in helping the building of the Community Sports Pavilion move forward a little step. The tree issues in the town haven’t been resolved to my satisfaction at the time of writing, so this is going to be one of my priorities for the month ahead.
Attendance at Bawtry Town Council and Austerfield Parish Council Attending these meetings every month is something I enjoy and it is always good to be able to report back when problems that have been brought to my attention have been resolved. The Parish Councillors give their time voluntarily to running the Council and helping to improve the area and members of the public are always welcome to attend their meetings. Issues raised at the last meeting were the sign on Station Road which is nearing its 1st year anniversary for not being in situ and cars using roads in Bawtry as rat runs as well as the ongoing problem of speeding. The latter is something often raised and there has been some confusion about the planning application to extend the 30mph further along Thorne Road for a very short distance. This is because of the advisory 20mph limit that will be in place on Station Road but I share the views of the resident who contacted me that 30mph should be the limit throughout Bawtry and Austerfield. I know our MP Caroline Flint worked hard to reduce the limit between the two and I know the Residents Group have this very high on their list of priorities and I will continue to work on moving this forward.
Neighbourhood Plan and Year 6 at Mayflower I was delighted to accompany a member of the Residents Group when we went to talk with Year 6s about their thoughts and wishes on how Bawtry should be developing as part of the Neighbourhood Planning process. Imagination, creativity, care and concern for others as well as excellent behaviour were what we experienced when we spent the morning in the school. I was able to report back to a recent meeting of the Residents Group and share the children’s’ idea which the group were very impressed with. All these ideas will be included in the planning process and will be available for residents to see when the Group have their “Have your say day” in early 2016 when we hope all residents will come along to, to help the group develop the
Neighbourhood Plan further. I have been asked to see how we can capture teenagers views in the process so will let you know how this progresses.
Health and Care Scrutiny In addition to my ward work, I am also a member of various DMBC committees including Adults Health and Care scrutiny. These meetings are open to the public and it is where Elected Members scrutinise current adult care and health issues. At our last meeting we had a long discussion on direct payments and we will be discussing a range of different topics at future meetings. If you currently use Adults services, or are perhaps a carer I would be interested to hear you views.
How to Contact Me Please call in anytime to my 2 surgeries, but the rest of the month, just give me a call, or a text if it is easier and I will give you a call back. I am happy to visit you at home if it’s easier than coming to my surgery. Last Saturday of every month – Austerfield Centre Community Shop from 10am – 12pm 2nd Friday of every month - Bawtry Community Library from 10am – 12pm Tel: 07976896563/01302 710251: Twitter @CllrRachaelB : Email: Rachael.blake@doncaster.gov.uk Thank you for reading this and I hope to see you at the Bawtry Christmas event on the afternoon of Sunday 22ndNovember. I know the Retailers Association are putting a lot of work into organising this event so it no doubt will be bigger and better than ever. A great afternoon and evening for residents and visitors of all ages. Kind Regards
Rachael

Co-operative SANTA DASH, Local Forums Tickhill We are currently Piloting a new strategy in the Doncaster area, where we are going back to the roots of The Co-operatives values and principles, and supporting the local communities in which we serve. To do this, we have set up a Co-operative Local Forum in the Doncaster area, encompassing: Armthorpe, Auckley, Bawtry, Bessacarr, Cantley, Rossington The Co-operative Local Forums (CLF) will be at the heart of communities, working hand-in-hand with our food stores and funeral homes. The aim of the CLF are to: • Provide a sounding board for any community ideas you have • Bring local Co-operative members and colleagues together to make good things happen in their local areas • Provide opportunities for members’ voices to be heard by The Co-operative Members’ Council and our businesses We are looking to engage with local people, Cooperative Members and local community groups to see how we may best support the community, and wondered if the CLF would be of interest to you or if you know of anybody who would like to be involved? We are holding our first meeting at Cantley Community Centre, Goodison Boulevard on November 25th at 7pm and would love as many people to attend as possible for us to work together for the good of our local communities. Refreshments will be served.” T

Children’s disability charity, Brainwave, is organising a 5k Santa Dash taking place on the morning of Saturday 5th December 2015 from Tickhill Cricket Club. As a fun run, it is not a timed event and runners of all abilities (including walkers) are welcome to take part. The Santa Dash is the first fundraising event that Brainwave has undertaken in Yorkshire. Brainwave helps children living with disabilities and special needs to achieve greater independence. The children have a range of conditions such as cerebral palsy, Down’s syndrome, autism, genetic disorders and developmental delay. All proceeds raised from the event will support local children. Amelia Poppy, is aged two and lives in Tickhill. She lives with a genetic condition known as Koolen de Vries Syndrome. Brainwave has developed an exercise programme tailored for Amelia. According to mum, Claire, “Amelia has benefited greatly from the brainwave programme; she has made amazing progress with her mobility, communication skills and overall development. Through attending Brainwave we, as her parents, felt assured that Amelia was receiving the right therapy to optimise her potential.” Richard Clarke of Brainwave enthused about the event, “The Santa Dash will be brilliant fun. There will be Christmas music as people gather for the run. There will be a special appearance by the ‘real Santa’ to hand medals to all the runners. Afterwards there will be refreshments in the Cricket Club. It is a brilliant way to help local children, like Amelia.” Runner registration is £15 per adult and £10 per child (up to 13). Santa Suits and runner medals will be provided to all participants. Team packages are also available for local businesses to take part. Runner registration forms are available at KSM Dry Cleaners & Card Shop in Tickhill, and also available online via the Charity website: http://www.brainwave.org.uk/yorkshire-santa-dash/ T
