Welcome to the

September 2016 edition

“Your life is your story. Write well. Edit often”. Susan Statham

Whatever you have been up to this summer I hope that you too have managed to enjoy the many dry, bright and sunny days, long may they continue into September. In particular in September please keep your fingers crossed for dry weather during the weekend of 17th and 18th September when the Clumber Park Food Festival will be taking place (find details of how to win tickets inside this magazine) and also T-Fest will be taking place in Tickhill on the Saturday. The October issues will be delivered to you late September. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 9th September. Enjoy September and I will be back in a months’ time with your October magazine.

Best wishes,

Arts Review & what’s going on - September 2016

I know I am not alone in this, I get pretty annoyed when an exhibition dresses itself up in intellectual twoddle in order to justify its existence, cost and your attention. The last exhibition at the Harley gallery, for me, was one such show, (well, actually there were two of them). Two shows about vases, one was a vast number of large red vases. It’s a joy in itself to get a huge number of human sized red objects in a room, but this exhibition was a discussion about Chinese production. And the other, which had the amusing title of the ‘Arms of the Portland Vase’ again should have been all about the artists wit and skill with image, but got tangled up in Greco-Roman architectural theory. For me this exhibition showed the skill of the exhibition team at the Harley Gallery in their ability to display dull stuff really well. The real joy at the Harley this summer has been the new Portland collection galleries and all they contain – but all is not lost the next two shows look like a reason to journey down the road again. Harley Gallery Welbeck k until 23 October GARDENS FOR THE DUCHESS In celebration of the ‘Year of the Garden’ and exhibition of rare stereoscopic autochromes of the Edwardian gardens at Welbeck, dating from 1911-1928. And NEW THREADS by NORA FOK. The artist has been exploring the interaction between art, science, mathematics and the natural world. She has combined her longstanding techniques of crafting fine nylon microfilament, which she knits, knots, plaits and weaves by hand to make jewellery with new technologies. This has resulted in an exhibition that will include pieces that range from bodywear to sculpture. This looks like a fascinating show of beautiful made objects www.harleygallery.co.uk Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery y Wed to Fri 10.00 – 16.30, Sat & Sun 10.30 – 4.15 Exhibition: until 11th September Doncaster Art Club: Annual Exhibition and until 18th September ‘Chris Moss: Sculptures’ sculptures in wire depicting various animals including greyhounds, horses and sheep. The exhibition also includes items from the Museum Service’s Natural History and Fine Art Collections. In this lecture we look at images of horses, both on and off the racecourse Lectures take place at Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery on Chequer Road, starting at 10.30 am and lasting for an hour and a half. Each lecture costs £5 to be paid at the museum reception and includes refreshments. Also you will find some wonderful beadwork by Tom Davis, the proceeds from the sale of Tom’s work are going to DASH – Depression and Anxiety Self help Group. Open Monday - Saturday 10 am - 4.45 pm. They have been resident at the Butchers Arms for around 20 years now and play a great selection of well known jazz standards and pride themselves on the variety of music covered. Many of the band members play in other bands but get together every Monday evening at the ‘Butchers’ to play the kind of music that they and the small but enthusiastic audience enjoy. TFEST T - Tickhill 17 September is happening again with lots of bands and music and fun www.t-fest.co.uk CAST in Doncasterr Tue 6 Sep-Sat 10 ‘Dead Sheep’ The dramatic inside story of Margaret Thatcher’s downfall. In 1989 a seemingly invincible Margaret Thatcher ruthlessly sacked Geoffrey Howe, her Foreign Secretary. She foolishly thought she had nothing to fear from her one time friend and political ally. After all, his speaking skills had famously been compared to ‘being savaged by a dead sheep’! But, inspired by his wife Elspeth, Howe destroyed the Prime Minister’s career with one of the deadliest political speeches ever made. Dead Sheep mixes tragedy and comedy in an entertaining tale of loyalty, betrayal and revenge. This acclaimed witty new drama enjoys its national tour première at Cast and stars Spitting Image’s Steve Nallon as Margaret Thatcher, Graham Seed (Nigel Pargetter in The Archers), Paul Bradley (Eastenders, Holby City) and Carol Royale (Life Without George, Heartbeat and Casualty). Hello from Mayflower Sanctuary, we hope you are all enjoying the holiday break and taking your much loved dogs for long walks on the beach. We have had some beautiful sunny days and hope everyone is remembering not to leave dogs and cats in hot cars, its surprising how hot a car can get g in 10 minutes. In the Sanctuary at the moment we have a really pretty German Shepherd his name is Theo he is really stressed in kennels and needs a foster home urgently. It would be ideal if you had experience with this breed, however even if you haven’t come along and speak to us anyway. y y Flynn and Bailey are two lovable little dogs that can do no wrong. Bailey has an undershot jaw and is so funny and cute a really adorable puppy we think he is about 4/5 months old and both came from Cyprus for a better life. The situation there is really horrible for some dogs and cats, so we like to help when we can. Flynn is a bit of an escape artist again really cute with one ear up and one down. Both are small dogs with beautiful temperaments. These dogs are both in foster at the moment and have fit in really well with other dogs in the household. But p permanent home are required. q Molly is a pretty little girl that came from Romania she was a street dog, bless her she has at some point broken her foot and it has healed in a strange way, obviously she wasn’t in a position to have a vet present ! Poor little thing is frightened of everything so she will need a lot of love and patience to make her into a sociable little dog. With the right home and loving gp people p i am sure she will shine. Would you believe there has been 2 cases of kittens dumped over the last few weeks. One was in a box in a wood

Finding g a forever home and another was left at our gates. We didn’t have any room however our cattery manager Penny has taken them home and they are all doing well. Realistically they were left where they could be found. But really that isn’t the point. If people don’t want their cats to have kittens there is financial help from various organisations including cat protection also some vets carry out neutering schemes. So check it out before y your cat is pregnant p g again. g Big thank you to people that have bought things from our wish list with Amazon, there are some very generous people so thank you. y We have for sale a lovely Poetry Book it’s called Poetry Book For Little Paws, printed by AKS Print & Design. Members of the public contributed to the poetry book including Lisa Turner and Helen Slater. Big thank you to Peglars who funded and published the book. You can get a copy from reception at the Sanctuary for just £3. All proceeds p to our Sanctuary. y

She is a lovable little girl but is a little confused by the situation that she finds herself in at the minute. Once she gets to know you, her true personality will come shining through and you will be rewarded with purrs, head-bumps and the loudest oude meow in the Cattery.

Life Saver Tesco bring us a home delivery of dog and cat food every week which is amazing g so manyy thanks. Has anyone got a few spare hours to spare, we need a gardener/handyman. Update from Councillor

Rachael Blake Another busy month working on a variety of different issues, all of which will make a different to residents. I was pleased to attend meetings with David and John from the Town Council with a range of DMBC officers to help us take forward the aspirations of the Neighbourhood plan and address many of the problems affecting the ward such as increased traffic and in particular lorry movements. I have provided updates on a number of other areas which I hope ensures residents are kept up to date with what is happening in Bawtry. Increase in crimes I am in regular contact with the SYP Inspector who is responsible for Bawtry and Austerfield so as soon as I was contacted about what appeared to be an increase in burglaries and attempted burglaries I asked him for information. He confirmed that there had been a sudden increase in crime In Bawtry and Tickhill with 2 burglary dwellings, 8 burglary of sheds/commercial premises, 1 theft of motor vehicle and 16 theft from or interference with motor vehicles ( July 2016). As a consequence, patrol officers were deployed into Bawtry during their night shifts over the weekend in marked and plain vehicles, together with additional resources from our Joint Services Operational Unit as well as increased PCSO patrols. This activity and a call from a resident about suspicious activity resulted in an arrest being made. He also asked me to urge local residents to report any offences to enable SYP to build up an accurate picture of the problem which will support his request for more resources to visit the area at the most appropriate times.

Improved broadband access “Superfast South Yorkshire (SFSY) are preparing to roll out fibre broadband in the Rossington and Bawtry Ward. Nearly 200 postcodes will be able to access the next generation internet connection through existing phone lines as a direct result of the SFSY programme. Once the works are complete, you will need to contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and upgrade to take advantage of the fibre technology. Visit www. superfastsouthyorkshire.co.uk for more information.” As an update, we have 1 cabinet live in Bawtry now, please see below for “live” postcodes. 26 BAWTRY TODAY

DMBC Councillor

Grass cutting and encroachment I am continuing to meet with the Street Scene team on a regular basis. They have additional staff, now working in Bawtry, but please continue to contact me about particular concerns that you want to see addressed.

Post Office – proposed move to new premises As residents may be aware there is a proposal, with the Postmaster’s agreement to move the Post Office to Today’s Local (14a Station Road). As a Councillor I have received a detailed proposal, including all the services that are provided now and how this compares to services in the new location. I have put a copy of this letter on the desk at the library and sent it to Doug for inclusion on the Residents Group Facebook Page. The consultation concludes on 20 September so I would really like to hear your views on this so I can include them in my response.

McCarthy and Stone – application number 16/01920/FULM McCarthy and Stone have now submitted their planning application to develop 34 retirement living apartments, comprising one and two bedrooms. Everyone I have spoken to thinks that this will be good for Bawtry, but again I would like to hear your views on this so that I can include them in my response to the planning application.

My September Surgery I will be at the Bawtry Library Coffee Morning on 9 September from 10am. I will be attending the Austerfield Parish Council meeting as well. Please call in or contact me in any of the different ways. Tel: 07976896563/01302 710251: Twitter @CllrRachaelB: Email: Rachael.blake@doncaster.gov.uk I realise that as a Councillor I am sent lots of information that residents may be interested in, and I don’t have space to cover everything in this update. To enable residents to read this as well, I am going to ask in the Library if I can have some space in there to have a notice board, or have a file available on the desk, so I can display more information – further details will be provided in my next update. Kind regards

0LVVRQ 3UH 6FKRRO The children at Misson Pre-School have been very busy indeed this Summer! In late June, there was D JURXS YLVLW WR &DSWDLQ -DFNȇV 3OD\ $UHD LQ 5HWIRUG where children could socialise and explore, whilst parents browsed for bargains amongst local sellers’ stalls. Later on in the month, the children took part in a much-enjoyed Sports Day, followed a few days later by a Dance Show choreographed by a local dance instructor! Some of the older boys and girls have recently visited Misson Primary School for a Teddy Bears’ Picnic; in addition, all the children had the chance to produce a piece of artwork on canvas, supported by a local artist, which was displayed during an evening of celebration at Misson Primary School. The artwork was stunning, and available to purchase, raising funds to spend on more resources for the children back at pre-school. :LWK ȴ QDQFLDO VXSSRUW IURP 5RELQ +RRG Airport, our little horticulturalists have also worked to plant some beautiful hanging baskets as an end-of-term project.

Don’t put up with

Domestic Violence For many people, both men and women, the very place where they should feel safest is precisely where they are in the greatest danger. This is because they are suffering abuse and violence from their partner at home. Too often the victims are afraid to speak out because they are worried either that there is nothing which can be done to help them or that it might make the situation worse if they try to stand up to the abuser

If you are the victim of domestic violence or you are concerned about your safety or the safety of your children, our family and domestic violence solicitors can take fast and effective steps to protect you.

What Can the Court do? The family court can make Orders preventing your partner from being violent or abusive towards you or the children, and, if necessary can make an Order removing gy your p partner from the family home and preventing them ffrom coming within a speciified distance of it. If you have already left the hom me because of violence o or threats of violencce, the court can m make Orders enab bling you to return n safely. The police e will usually work k with us to protecct you further and a any breach of a Non n-Molestation Order or

For more details

Occupation Order is treated very seriously by the courts.

What other help is available? There are a number of organisations who specialise in providing support and practical help for the victims of domestic abuse. They can help you find a safe place to stay if you can’t stay at home in the short term, and provide advice about benefits and financial matters. We can put you in touch with these organisations.

What about the cost? Legal aid funding is still available for those on a low income or receiving certain state benefits. We can assess your entitlement to funding quickly and if necessary make an emergency application to protect you. You may also be able to use evidence of domestic violence to obtain legal aid for other family proceedings such as divorce, financial matters or children disputes.

Please contact any of our family solicitors.

Bawtry Town wn Council - September 2016 New Pavilion at the Memorial Sports s Ground Matthew Brearley and his BARS colleag gues have worked for years to put a new pavilion building on the MSG, by winning grants from sporting and other bodies, including the Town Council. It looks ooks as if WKHVH HÎ? RUWV KDYH Č´ QDOO\ VXFFHHGHG ZLWK EXLOGLQJ likely to commence in September this year. The new facility will include four changing rooms, and a function room with adjoining kitchen and toilets which will be available for hire. The land is owned by BTC, so we have been in the process of agreeing a lease between the Council and BARS. This will be a fantastic facility for all of Bawtry to enjoy. Boundary Signs After consultation with residents and businesses, a design for the new signs has now been selected, and the Council is now advertising for sponsors from the business community. Our ad looks like this. These signs will be erected at the 5 entry points to the town – on the A638 Great North 5G QRUWK DQG VRXWK %DZWU\ 5G WR $XVWHUČ´ HOG Gainsborough Rd, and Tickhill Rd. They will replace the Bawtry “12th century portâ€? signs that meant VRPHWKLQJ WR KLVWRU\ EXÎ? V EXW EDÉž HG PRVW SHRSOH

Gainsborough Rd toilets Because of the long history of vandalism and anti-social behaviour, and the DVVRFLDWHG HVFDODWLQJ FRVWV WKH &RXQFLO ȴ QDOO\ GHFLGHG to close the ladies and gents toilets – leaving the disabled toilet accessible. These facilities are replaced by free public access to some local business outlets in the town – look out for stickers in their windows. Market Hill improvements We are still in discussion with Excel, our car park operator, with a view to introducing a revision to the charging hours on Market Hill. The Council’s working group has continued to seek to identify ways to achieve long term improvements to the car park area, to make it safer (pavements!) and attractive. Excel is contributing to that discussion and the Council has commissioned 56 BAWTRY TODAY

DMBC to provide a design. Bringing the Market Hill car park up to modern standards and introducing a “green spaceâ€? will involve a loss of spaces – so we are also looking to identify other areas in Bawtry ZKLFK ZRXOG EH DÎ? That would also help us if we succeed in persuading DMBC to remove the parking on Tickhill Rd, which we think is dangerous, and it will help to reduce nuisance parking throughout the town. Establishment of a Bawtry Community Forum We are ambitious in how we want to improve Bawtry, and we think that what we do is what the community want us to do – but we want to ensure we get it right. We do invite the public to Council meetings, but their ability to make substantial contribution to policy and decision making is limited. Therefore, we want to establish a Community Forum, which will bring together the Council with all the other groups in Bawtry – residents, business people, retailers, land owners, churches etc. – which will hold the Council to account for what it does and how it spends Bawtry’s money. The Forum might challenge what we do and suggest new policies and ideas. It is hoped that we might have WKH Č´ UVW PHHWLQJ RI VXFK D IRUXP ODWHU WKLV \HDU Grant Awarding Policy Each year, BTC makes grants of about ÂŁ5,000 to individuals and organisations in the community. That is a completely proper Council function, but it has been done in a rather haphazard way to date. We have now made a Grant Awarding Policy, which we hope will make the process fairer, more transparent and more objective – the essential criterion being that the award of a JUDQW PXVW EULQJ GLUHFW EHQHČ´ W WR WKH UHVLGHQWV of Bawtry. A copy of the new policy is available on BTC’s website – www.bawtrytowncouncil.co.uk New Council website We don’t think our website works very well. We’re therefore looking to have a new one created for us, which will be easier to use and provide more and better information. Police and Crime Unfortunately S Yorks Police did not attend our July meeting as promised – they have now agreed to come in October. Neighbourhood Plan Work to develop our Neighbourhood Plan is ongoing, with a major consultation event with retailers, business people and landowners being planned later in the year. A Bawtry Neighbourhood Plan website is now live – visit www.bawtryneighbourhoodplan. co.uk, where you can complete our questionnaire online and/or make comments. TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 969696
