Piano & Keyboard Tuition & Theory of Music You will be receiving this magazine sometime over the Easter period, and this year Easter Sunday coincides with the start of British Summer time. This brings with it the lighter evenings and the promise of warmer days. It does also mean that Easter Sunday is an hour shorter than it should be, but for me that is a small price to pay for the added daylight at the end of each day. Spring often seems to be the time that many of us start making plans for improvements to our homes and gardens. Whether it is fresh new soft furnishings, a spring deep clean, an improved garden ahead of the summer months or a much bigger renovation or extension project, this magazine is packed full of people who can help you with those plans. Don’t forget to tell them where you found them if you give any a call! The May issues will be delivered to you late April. We have brought the distribution forward a little so that the vast majority will be delivered ahead of the Tour de Yorkshire day on 30th April. This will allow us to include all the most up to date information for the events of the day within our pages. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 9th April (yes the closing date has to be early too – although actually still the 2nd Friday of the month as it usually is). Enjoy April and I will be back in a months’ time with your May magazine.
Best wishes, Paula x paula@todaypublications.co.uk | t: 01302 969696

Handing some of the money raised over to Bassetlaw Hospital
On 19th of January 2015 we found out our daughter had died at 37 weeks, she was born 6
Harworth Today
on 23rd January 2015 at Bassetlaw Hospital. The rooms at Bassetlaw Hospital are not really equipped to deal with stillbirths. We heard that they were trying to raise £35,000 to convert a room on the labour ward to make families as comfortable as they can while they go through this terrible ordeal. The staff at the hospital were amazing and doctors and midwives attended Evelyn’s funeral on February 5th 2015. My wife Emma spent several days in a room with no windows or air conditioning. I was sleeping in a chair and was generally uncomfortable and with it being so warm we could not spend as much time with our angel baby as we would have liked. The room that has now been fully funded will be used for stillborn families and will be kitted out with a cool cot, artificial day lighting, air conditioning, sofa beds, kitchen facilities and new ceiling and flooring. The past 12 months or so have been extremely difficult but we set about to help others. We have had families from all over the world offering support and many of our friends have donated money and helped us raise funds for this room. We also offer support to families that have suffered similar loses, through social media, web and over the telephone. We can’t bring Evelyn back but we can help others and this gives us comfort knowing that we are making a difference and we are supporting others at the darkest times of their lives. Stillborn babies are more common than people realise, 1 in 200 babies are born with their wings in the UK, years ago it was very different and over recent years things have changed for the better. More compassion is given to families nowadays but it’s still a taboo subject and people still find it hard to talk about it. Most suffer in silence but there are people out there willing to listen and support these families. Emma and I are always on hand to talk to people affected by stillbirth or child loss so feel free to contact us. We have now raised £4800 and we are going to continue to fund raise and are planning more events to donate to local good causes and we would like to thank our family and friends who have offered us support and donated time and money to the room project. Special thanks to Dave and Denise Challinor who have supported us from the start and have helped out with the fund raising events.

The curse of care fees! Many couples make standard ‘Mirror Wills’ which leave everything to the surviving spouse and then on the death of the surviving spouse everything passes to the children of the marriage. These Wills are perfectly acceptable and perfectly valid however have you considered the impact of care fees if the surviving spouse was to end up in care? Under the terms of a Mirror Will the surviving spouse inherits all of the assets of the marriage, the bank accounts, the car and generally the biggest asset you own – your home. If the surviving spouse then needs care and is financially assessed by the Local Authority, the assets (including the property) are then used to pay for their care until they have depleted the value of their assets down to only £14,250.
But what if you had prepared Property Trust Wills? The deceased spouse’s share in the property passes into a trust for the benefit of the children. The share of the property in this trust is not included as an asset for the purposes of a financial assessment – you have just protected half of the value of your home! Here at The Byrne Practice we can prepare your Property Trust Wills for a fixed fee of £303.00 including VAT and disbursements. Act now, call Katy Delaney at The Byrne Practice

Greystones Sunday 17th April Two concerts: 2pm and 8pm / £15. The Young Uns . I have seen these 3 lads from Middlesborough on a number of occasions. They are simply brilliant. Don’t expect and easy ride with them, their humour will cut like a knife . They come from a part of the country where the industry has vanished and unemployment become a way of life, this is very much a part of who they are. Their musicianship and 3 part harmonies are to die for. Multi award winning trio, voted Radio 2 Folk Awards Best Band 2015. One of the most sought after acts on the English folk scene. Harworth Colliery Football Club April 2016 Update Hello and welcome to our monthly update from Harworth Colliery with March having been an incredibly busy month.
the new Robert Needham Memorial Stand. Let’s hope the majority are still playing in front of it in a few years. The good news keeps on coming as well on the Juniors front and I am delighted to announce that we will have a new team next season in the Under 13’s, as Paul Coward has come forward and offered to coach along with a few volunteers. This is great news and the aim of one new Junior side a year is being maintained at present and long may it continue. Paul will, over the summer months be put through his level 1 coaching so come the new season be ready to take the new team forward.
Where elso would I start than our record breaking Under 14’s. They have finished their league campaign winning all 18 of their 18 league games, a feat I’m not sure a Colliery side has ever achieved previously! What a team effort from every single person who has been a part of the set up and I know the Manager Dave Guy echo’s those thoughts. Dave, you should be (and I’m sure you are) incredibly proud. Each person can savour this for the rest of their lives so a huge well done. You have done yourselves and Harworth proud. That leads me on nicely to our Under 15’s who have at the very least achieved Propmotion to the Premier League next season which was the aim, but if results go their way could also be crowned champions so we will just have to wait on what Stainforth do in their final two games. Well done Graham, Paul and all the lads.
March saw the arrival of the Robert Needham Memorial Stand something as a club and as a community we all should be proud have. It gives very mixed emotions as the sheer fact it is there is hard to take but then there is pride in the fact that it is a great tribute to a great man. The final Instalment of the stand is £2800 and we hope to have raised this by the time you read this from the Memorial concert so everyone will have played their part. Numerous updates to the ground are occuring also in the push for promotion, the lights are back in, we have procured a Toilet Block and various jobs have been done around the ground, thanks to Trev Challinor and Steve Hawkins for all their help with this. It is hoped all the hard work will pay off as the First team chase Promotion, the ground has to be up to scratch. We are sure it will be then its down the players to perform in a huge month for the club. Not since the hey deys of the 80’s when the mine was flourishing and players was getting paid have we been in the Northern Counties East Division. What an acheivement this would be but we will have to continue to work hard and with your support anything is possible. 3 of the last 5 are at home with games on 02nd, 23rd and 30th of April all 15:00 kick offs. I touched on earlier about the hard work done by some of the Volunteers and Coaches we have and I must say to everyone associated with the club thank you, sometimes you don’t get the recognition needed but be sure that your efforts are truly appreciated. I could do with an extra page really as I am yet to speak about the remaining sides but will do next month, for now thank you for your time and hope to see you at the Jones and Co Recreation Ground very soon indeed.
Here you can see them standing very proudly in front of 10

Let there be Light! Spring is round the corner – how welcome and wonderful! The daffodils are smiling, our afternoons are lengthening – let there be LIGHT! Light in our homes is an interesting but difficult topic. It is the most tricky thing to achieve good lighting throughout your home and in many respects it is a rather neglected subject because I think it can be a little daunting. I am not talking about the necessary standard lighting, more about ‘mood’ lighting, the type that adds an extra layer of interest within a room. Different heights of lamps can provide pleasing effects, for example if you place an uplighter close to the floor the mood immediately changes. ‘Pebble’ lights laid on the floor add interest, as do the charming paper pleated lights which come in many sizes and shapes and are inexpensive. The new LED lights are not always aesthetically pleasing and sometimes cast a cool look, but their efficiency and low level running costs are something to consider. So don’t dismiss them too quickly even though they may be more functional than ‘designer’. In modern interiors they are at ease in their surroundings, but in a more traditional setting the light can be harsh. 16
Harworth Today
However they do suit kitchens and bathrooms very well. Have you tried any of the new styled CURRENT lampshades? ...great patterns, new shapes and bold colours can make an exciting statement and update your look very easily. Make sure when you are doing any sort of revamp you consider the lighting alongside all other things and try some new ideas. It will make all the difference and provide both interest and impact. As daylight closes in and darkness follows….

Be Sure of a Warm Welcome!
The meeting of the Tenants and Residents Group was held on Tuesday 1 March 2016, and new members were welcomed to the meeting. Under discussion were the plans by the Town Council to celebrate the Queens 90th Birthday, by holding a tea party at the Town Hall, where music of the era will be played and some film footage is being obtained and will be shown throughout the event. Transport will be arranged to ensure all who are eligible and and/or their carers can attend. More details, such as the date, will be available nearer the time. Members were urged to let the Town Councillors present at the meeting know of the names and addresses of anyone who might qualify. Members were also told of ongoing plans to involve schools and businesses in preparations for the Tour de Yorkshire passing through our town. It is hoped to get the school children to do some sort of Sky Art, so that the filming from above will pick up our children on the Scrooby Road Recreation Ground, and/or the Church of England School field. A date for the Whitby trip was given (27 July), and the river cruise could be either May or early June. Members were asked to let committee know their preference. The Town Councillors present were thanked for their help in getting the hard standing at the end of Melbourne Grove done. It had made their situation a great deal better. Town Councillors said they would pass on the thanks to County Council. It is always good to get praise for jobs well done. A rubbish bin and dog bin were also requested at the same spot, as school buses stop there, which has resulted in littering. Members were reminded that the next meeting would be the Annual General Meeting, when members vote in a new committee, or vote for the present one to be retained. All are welcome to put names forward for election. It is also when the committee look back at their achievements over the past year, and think about what other issues can be addressed in the new year. The books have been closed ready for audit next week, and accounts will be presented at the Annual General Meeting, to be held on Tuesday 5 April 2016, starting at 10.30 am at the Devonshire Road Community Centre. As always, new members are welcome, refreshments are provided, and a raffle will take place. New friendships are often formed as a result of attending our meetings.

2008(Bawtry) SQUADRON SERVING OTHERS When we decide to join the air cadets its on a voluntary basis, we don’t get paid and we let our cadets take the glory. But our cadets deserve it. As well as achieving and experiencing new opportunities for themselves they also give up their time to help others. The cadets take time out to help with RAFA, SUE RYDER, THE POPPY APPEAL and now the BRITISH HEART FOUNDATION. Along with the usual school, college, university and work commitments our cadets have also volunteer for bag packing days at local supermarkets, bucket collections at the Keepmoat Stadium and even standing out in the rain for the yearly Poppy Appeal. The cadets also need to collect funds for their own squadron too. Since we try and be a presence in our area, and appear at many local events throughout the year, we are also beginning to try and raise donations and sponsorship for ourselves. We teach our Cadets First Aid and CPR, they walk for miles for the yearly Cosford Marches and finally they learn how to survive out side with the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and Adventure Training camps. All this enriches a teenager’s life in so many ways. To reiterate what the cadets is about, it’s an organisation that uses the discipline, respect and fellowship of the Royal Air Force. It creates determination, dedication and ambition in young 20

people. It can help create a career or at least access to one. It can help a young person build up their life skills, their confidence and give them experiences they would not necessarily ever have the resources to do. It can also give them the chance to go to places they could never imagine going to and create friendships that can last a lifetime. This year 2008(BAWTRY) AIRCADETS is 60 years old and a celebration day is being organized to commemorate this, we are beginning to hear from some Ex-Cadets and will be very interested to hear their stories and how the Air Cadets affected their lives.
If anyone is interested in sponsoring or making a donation to the air cadets please contact us, every little bit is appreciated. Question and Answer

How many appointments does each GP have a day? The answer is between 35 and 40 depending on how many home visits are involved as these require more time. This is equal to between 180 and 200 appointments per GP per week for a full time GP. During February there were 2583 GP appointments in the month but 62 patients did not attend their appointment with a GP. This wastes GP time and frustrates patients that struggle to see their GP. This is above the National average. The Practice had 9281 patients in December 2015. Not everyone requires an appointment every week or even every month but demand for appointments is high. This is common 22

By Rachel Leverton
Spring has Sprung Digging is really only something I do with ground that is being cultivated for the first time. Mostly I use a fork and work in fertiliser as I go along. I like to use an organic fertiliser and tend to go for poultry manure pellets. I sprinkle them round shrubs, roses and perennials. The application instructions will vary but generally it’s about three handfuls to the square metre. It’s magical stuff when lightly forked in. It gives the plants a boost and builds up the levels of beneficial soil bacteria. Now is the time I dig up my overcrowded border plants and split them into smaller clumps. These can be used to plug the gaps elsewhere in my garden, or given to friends to help plug the gaps in theirs!
How to… Plant a container-grown shrub. Soak the compost for an hour before planting. Make sure the root ball of the shrub is sufficiently moist. Check to shrub is suitable for the site. Dig a hole that is larger than the root ball. Work well-rotted garden-compost or planting mixture into the bottom of the hole and mix it with the soil you removed when you dug the hole. Plant the shrub o that the top of the root ball is just fractionally below the finished soil level. Firm the earth around with your boot. Water the plant in and spread an organic mulch on top.
Make sure you use a bit of fertiliser and water them in if the ground is dry. I spread a good 3 inch / 8cm layer of mulch around my border, between the plants. Choose from wellrotted manure or garden compost, chipped bark or cocoa shells. This seals in moisture and keeps the weeds down, essential at this time of year when they start growing like...well...weeds! If you haven’t already done so give your roses a prune taking care to remove any dead or diseased stems completely. 26

Service Dear Friends, Most churches prepare for Easter by organising lent courses. I was at one recently and we reminded ourselves that Jesus predicted his death and resurrection but his followers did not get it. Rather they were busy fighting amongst themselves about who would be the greatest after Jesus leaving them. Jesus found out and his response is as follows: So Jesus called them to him and said, “As you know, the kings and great men of the earth lord it over the people; but among you it is different. Whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant. And whoever wants to be greatest of all must be the slave of all. For even I, the Messiah, am not here to be served, but to help others, and to give my life as a ransom for many.”’ (Mark 10: 42 - 45) (Living Bible) In today’s world, a leader usually has special privileges and is treated better than everyone else. I wonder how you would feel if you arrive at work one day and find your boss cleaning the office. How about your husband cooking you a meal after you have spent a long day with the children or at work? And what if he did that often? Some of us may find these illustrations very unusual? This is because some people and cultures have a different conception of what leadership and service are. Some people even see service as a form of weakness. However, Jesus tells us and shows us that service is a sign of strength. It takes inner strength to serve those around you. I wonder if leaders who find it difficult to serve are simply afraid of their weaknesses.
different from what the world expects. I wonder if I can remind you that being a leader involves helping others. Leadership also includes being prepared to accept your fault when you are wrong. What about being honest and accepting that you do not know the answer to a problem? That is a sign of good leadership. It will even be prudent if you ask for help as you lead people. I wonder if you can pause and take a look at the leadership examples around you and at your own leadership style as well. If you’re a parent, how do you lead your children? As a husband, how do you serve your wife? Wives, how do you serve your husbands? What about being the boss at your workplace or in the community? How do you serve? Service is love as well. I want to remind my Welsh friends that in March you celebrated St. David’s Day. As at the time of writing this piece, my Irish friends were also preparing to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. These two saints are good examples of the fact that good leadership requires love and service. This Easter season, I wonder if I can remind you that Jesus served his followers and others even to his death. He rose from death and empowers us to love as he did. He is our servant-leader and wants us to follow him. We can only do so if we ask God to empower and guide our leadership and relationships with other people. He also entreats us to love and serve others as he did. May God bless you in all your endeavours especially, as you serve this month. Yours sincerely,

Tickhill and District Lions On Saturday 5th March our Charter Night Dinner and Dance, held at Doncaster Golf Club, Bessacarr celebrated 38 years of local presence after our club was formed out of North Notts Lions Club in 1978. With excellent food, music to get everyone dancing and a wide range of prizes in the raffle a good night was had by all.

The show based on the Christmas Classic – Scrooge was performed at Harworth & Bircotes Community Hall just before Christmas. Miss Helens School of Dance is an IDTA dance school offering theatre dance subjects of Ballet, Tap, Theatrecraft, Modern Jazz & Freestyle. As I prepare this report a fortnight before Easter it is pleasing to know that all sixty of our Giant Easter Eggs are with hotels, restaurants, pubs, shops and clubs for raffling off to customers. We are so grateful for the kindness of all the businesses and their customers in supporting the fundraising which enables us to maintain our help for needy individuals, causes and charities. Sunday 30th April will be a big day for Tickhill with the Tour de Yorkshire cycle races passing through on the same day as the Scarecrow Festival is being held. With more than five hours between the race for the ladies and the men’s race, Tickhill is keen to provide suitable facilities for visitors who may stay all day scarecrow spotting and watching the cycling. Lions will be running a barbecue stall alongside the Scarbrough Arms Beer Festival to assist with feeding the expected crowds. On Friday 24th June there will be another event in the Scarbrough Arms car park - our second ‘Summer Bash’, featuring live music, good food and real ales and on the Sunday of that weekend Thorne Rural Lions Club are organising an 11 mile walk from Doncaster to Thorne in aid of the Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust. Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - APRIL 2016 LET’S STOP THE RUMOURS! Councillors are frequently asked when the ‘pit tower’ will be demolished, and many rumours are circulating. A MESSAGE FROM HARWORTH ESTATES IN LATE FEBRUARY CONFIRMED THE FOLLOWING:1. Preparation work is underway. 2. The complete demolition and cleanup is estimated to take 26 weeks. 3. As yet, no date has been set for the demolition of the tower. Harworth Estates will inform Council when this is known; strict Health and Safety precautions will be in place… and yes, Council will let you know, provided we have the date before our monthly article is sent to the editor. Looks like a while longer yet, folks! TOUR DE YORKSHIRE: LATEST NEWS Meeting on Tuesday 29th March at 2.15 and 3.00 pm in the Town Hall: The race organisers are holding an open meeting for everyone interested in getting involved in the race – parents with children welcome. I understand people from Tickhill and Bawtry are invited, and I know Tickhill are busy making bunting. So what are we doing in Harworth and Bircotes? H&B Town Council is hoping to have banners made that feature Tommy Simpson – getting permission from Highways to use their lamp posts on Scrooby Road is not as straightforward as I had hoped – and we will be purchasing yellow jerseys, as well. Schools are working at Sky Art – which will be seen by overhead aircraft. T.R.A. is busy sewing and knitting bunting. Family Centre is busy organising a block viewing of the race along Scrooby Road, and will be serving refreshments. Yellow Bicycles: I have been asked if the Town Council can pay for the paint – I will do this using my District Council Allowance, so not a problem provided I get a receipt.

Race Times for both the Women’s and Men’s races will be confirmed shortly but are expected to be late morning for the ladies race and late afternoon for the men’s race. More details next month. If you want to get involved or have some ideas, please come along to the meeting or contact the Town Hall. (759037) UPDATE DEVELOPMENTS IN THE CEMETERIES In the Old Cemetery: work on the pathways has been undertaken to remove trip hazards. In the New Cemetery: I write this knowing the car park is to be extended in March, some landscaping will be done, and Council is negotiating an electricity supply so that the gates can be opened and closed automatically. We also intend placing a pole just beyond the pedestrian gate to allow entry for mobility scooters and prams but not to quad bikes when the main gates are closed. Thank you to the gentleman who has volunteered to make sure the gates are open daily. Town Hall Car Park: work began on 21st March – thank you for your patience whilst this work was in progress. Council didn’t have a start date when the previous edition of this magazine was published. THE QUEEN’S 90TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION: 21ST APRIL Harworth and Bircotes will be joining Retford and Worksop in lighting a beacon to celebrate this important event. Where: at the Sports Pavilion – thanks to their committee members for
supporting this event. Time: 7.30pm THE 2016/17 BUDGET FOR BASSETLAW DISTRICT COUNCIL 7th March saw me present the General Fund budget for the next financial year to Bassetlaw Council. I am sure you know all councils are facing yearly government cuts to their traditional income streams. Bassetlaw has to find another £2.7m by March 2018. Council Tax is the main concern for residents. Bassetlaw not only collects its own Council Tax, but also acts as the collecting agent for the County Council, the Police and Fire Service, as well as for Parish Councils (the Precept) – all set their own levy as part of the total sum. This year B.D.C. has set an increase of 1.9%, which for Band D properties is an increase of 6 pence a week or £2.99 a year. Band A properties will see an increase of 4 pence a week. County Council has set a 1.9% increase, plus a 2% Social Care Levy to raise £4m to pay for social care. The Police have increased their Levy by 1.99%, and the Fire Service increase is 1.95%. Interestingly, the Precept for Harworth and Bircotes is about £1 less this year for Band D properties, even though the total is marginally higher: this is because our tax base (the number of properties) has grown. THE FOOD BANK A committed group of local people are determined to raise the profile of our food bank, which currently is situated at the Town Hall in the Sure Start facility. Evidence shows that in H&B it is not well used; a recent survey proved that many people don’t

community know about this provision or how to access it, so don’t be surprised if you see posters and online information promoting this service. It can be difficult feeding a family when experiencing a sudden change in circumstances which affects your income…. for example, if made redundant. Yes, people in this situation notify Benefits, but the problem is that it may take 3 weeks before you receive the first payment, and how do you feed the children in the meantime? So a food parcel can make sure they at least get some breakfast before going to school. Can it be abused? No – a referral is needed, and the number of parcels per household is strictly limited. I will be selecting a few items to donate to the food bank next time I am in the supermarket; most items are welcome, ranging from nappies, baby food and dog food, as well as everyday food items. TO MAKE YOU SMILE: During the 1972 miner’s strike I was completing my midwifery training; this meant working on the District, being on 24 hour call, and living for 3 months in the Nurses Home – and that meant paying rent Barry and I could ill-afford in the strike. It was winter, snow was on the ground, and I was wearing shoes with holes in because I couldn’t pay for new ones. One night I was called out to a mining family; the wife had thought she was in labour but the contractions had eased off. I decided to stay, just in case. The husband was also on strike, there was no fire and very little food, but I assured the family I would be fine sleeping on the settee, and everyone settled down for the night. I expected a few cold, uncomfortable hours, but woke the next morning ‘warm as toast’ – the family Labrador had, I discovered, joined me on the settee and acted as a hot water bottle! Four days later I was back and delivered a fine healthy boy.
