I do hope that readers have had an enjoyable Christmas and that many of you are still enjoying festive treats and time with family and friends. I had such plans to be organised well ahead for Christmas this year so that I didn’t find myself rushing around, missing things, working late and wrapping on Christmas Eve! Unfortunately, as I write this with just 10 days left to go and still with not a card written, 5 magazines to finish, shopping still to do and lots still to organise, it looks like I will be working and preparing right up to Christmas again! Fingers crossed that by the time you read this I will be enjoying a few days of relaxation. The February issue will be delivered to you late January. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 15th January. 2016 may be upon us by the time you read this, if not it won’t be far away, so I would like to take this opportunity to wish all readers and their families a very happy New Year, I hope the year ahead will be not only happy but a memorable one for you.

Dear Residents of Oldcotes & Styrrup
BIRCOTES LIBRARY NEWS HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
May I wish you all a Very Happy New Year, and I hope that you had an excellent Christmas and enjoyed your break from work.
Bircotes library would like to say a great big THANK YOU! to ASDA for supporting our children's activities and their continuous generosity.
I have, since May, continued to work as earnestly as I could for many residents and hopefully assist them to settle their queries and problems. I have been in constant dialogue with the Council regarding a number of issues that have been affecting the people of Styrrup and Oldcotes. I hope that they will have a satisfactory outcome in the very near future. However, as usual, there is yet another situation looming up which will affect people of both villages again – and further afield as well - with which I have been asked to assist, and I am happy to do so.
JANUARY
I continue to attend your Parish Council meetings when possible and so pick up on matters that I may be able to assist with. If anyone has any particular issues that they would like to discuss with me, or I may be able to help with, please pop along to your Parish Council meetings and I will at least be able to make arrangements to meet and discuss things. The meetings are well advertised in advance.
ANCESTRY
In my last newsletter I asked whether it was the wish of residents that I continue to hold Surgeries where you could come along and meet me. The overwhelming response was that it was felt that Surgeries are not needed in your villages, therefore I have stopped holding them but I am, as usual available to be contacted at any reasonable time. I will make arrangements to meet or call you at a convenient time and place. Thank you for your support. It is a pleasure to support and serve you. You live in lovely villages. Have a good Year. Regards,
Cllr. Barry Bowles Blyth Ward Bassetlaw District Council 01909 732121 barry.bowles@bassetlaw.gov.uk

Happy New Year to all and I hope everyone had a happy Christmas. Here at the Sanctuary we made sure that all of our residents had lovely Christmas presents to keep them occupied on Christmas morning. A big thank you to all staff that elected to work over the Christmas break keeping our dogs and cats fed watered and happy. We have been busy over the Christmas period fundraising. We have had 2 Doncaster street collections which were both a great success. We met the most interesting people that told us lovely stories about their dogs and cats. They were as always very generous. So thank you to everyone that volunteered to collect and also to everyone that came along and said hello. It is always a wonderful pleasure to collect in Doncaster Town centre. Yorkshire Caravans in Bawtry invited us to their Christmas event. They were happy for us to do a tombola and we had great fun. Again a big thank you to Yorkshire Caravans and to everyone that came to take part.
Finding a forever home We were really busy at the Sanctuary up to Christmas which was wonderful. Lots of dogs and cats went to their new homes in time for them to enjoy their Christmas lunch. We are at last coming to the end of our new kennel refurb they are looking brilliant and will make such a difference to our Sanctuary. We would like to thank Adoption for Pets who have made this possible, together with Councillor Grainger who contributed to our first refurbishment programme. If anyone has a few hours to spare and enjoy dog walking why not make a New Year’s resolution to keep fit and help us by volunteering to dog walk. Again a Happy New Year and we hope to see you soon.

Name: Peppa Sex: Female Date into care: June 15 Age: 2 Years Good with dogs: ? Good with cats: Some Lived with children: Yes Peppa has had to come into care with her buddy, Muffin, because the new baby in the family was allergic to them. She is a loving little cat but can be a little shy with strangers. All she needs is time to get to know you and you will see the cuddle-cat hiding beneath that tough exterior. She is best buddies with Muffin so a home together would be perfect but not essential if the right home comes along separately. Please don’t pass her by, ask to meet her and you will see the sweetheart within.
Name: Whisky Sex: Female Date into care: Feb 15 Age on arrival: 18 Months Good with dogs: ? Good with cats: Yes Lived with children: Yes When Whisky’s owner had to move she was unable to take her babies with her so contacted Mayflower for help. It was a sad day when she left Whisky and her buddy, Guinness, behind. Whisky is the more confident of the pair and is soon purring away and asking for cuddles. She has previously been a housecat but would possibly like to explore a secure garden. Although a home together would be perfect as they are best buddies, its not essential if the right home comes along separately. Please don’t pass them by.

Asked what it felt like to step into John Travolta’s (high heeled) shoes, Daniel said “I’ve watched John Travolta playing the role, but I want my Edna Turnblad to be very different. It’s a weird role to get, but it’s going to be a laugh… I’ve got to learn to dance in heels!” 7KH VXFFHVV RI KLJK SURÀOH productions such as Phantom and Hairspray forms part of the Elizabethan’s bid for Artsmark status.

Happy New Year! Firstly we would like to thank all those patients who have cancelled those appointments that they could not attend, over the past few months. The number of ‘Did Not Attend Appointments’ (DNA) had consistently reduced until October when they again increased. The latest figures available at the time of writing were Tickhill 63 DNA and Colliery 67 DNA. This is worrying as winter is the time of greatest demand for appointments and this waste of appointments cannot be absorbed, meaning more patients who need appointments cannot get them Secondly as a result of the multiple changes that have occurred at the Surgery over the past two or so years the PPG understands that some patients feel they no longer know who the staff are at the practice. We therefore intend in the next few articles to try to remedy this situation by sharing more information and introducing members of staff.

Here are a few facts and figures to start the process. The Tickhill and Colliery Surgery has 9225 registered patients of whom approximately two thirds are in Tickhill and one third in Harworth. The practice has the highest percentage of patients over 65 years of age in Doncaster and as such a greater demand on appointments It is a Training Practice which means as well as its own GPs it is registered to train registrars, who are qualified doctors doing their specialism in General Practice. At the time of writing the Practice has 4 GPS and 3 Registrars and is actively recruiting for a 5th GP. (The vacancy is covered by locum GPs in the meantime. This means our Medical Practice is fully staffed according to the numbers allocated by NHS England which puts them is a better position than many GP Surgeries in the country.

Tenants & Residents Association The Group’s last meeting before Christmas took place on Tuesday 1 December. Chair thanked everyone for their support and help at the Christmas Lights Event at the Town Hall on Thursday 26 November. Without the donations and the willing helpers it would not have been as successful as it was. A donation had been sent by the TRA to the Bassetlaw Hospice. The Group was particularly grateful to A1 Housing for providing Santa and his two elves, and the presents for the children. Photographs of the children with Santa were taken by A1 Housing staff, and these will be available for collection from Surestart Members were reminded of the Service of Dedication of the Memorial to the miners killed at Harworth Colliery, and the opening of the Memorial Garden, which took place on Sunday 13 December, after which refreshments were served in the Town Hall by members of the TRA. A member reported that his blue wheelie bin had been stolen in the early hours of that morning, and had been told that there were also a huge number of other wheelie bins stolen around Bassetlaw. It was thought they could have been used by burglars to get their haul away. Further instances of foxes being shot were reported, but it seems it is only an offence if they are shot in the throat, but not if they are shot in the chest, but no explanation as to why. The Group held their Christmas lunch at the Styrrup Hall Golf Club on 16 December. Coffee mornings will start again on 7 January 2016. The next meeting of the group will be on Tuesday 5 January 2016, at Devonshire Road Community Centre, starting at 10.30 am. New members are always welcome.

Forgive Dear Friends, and Forget! My two-month-old TV could not switch on for two nights so I had to call in the engineer. Interestingly, the engineer came in and just switched it on with the same remote control that I have used on many occasions to try to do the same. I was annoyed with myself and I had to explain to the engineer that it was the second experience in a month. Just after the engineer had left and I was trying to deal with my anger, I flipped the channel over and it landed on the ‘Victoria Derbyshire Show’. A news item ‘I forgave the driver who cost me my leg’ came up so I decided to sit on the sofa and watch. The comment was that, ‘a cyclist who lost her leg when she was hit by a skip lorry hugged and forgave the driver of the lorry’. Afterwards, as I was reflecting on the story, I was reminded of a similar story in Genesis in the bible. The story is told of a young man Joseph, whom most of us associate with his coat of many colours. His brothers sold him into slavery in Egypt because of his dreams. However, after many years, God helped him to become a prominent man in the political life in Egypt. Later on, these same brothers went into Egypt looking for food and by God’s doing, they found themselves in Joseph’s courtyard. Initially, they did not realise that they were in their brother’s house. Joseph had the chance for revenge and put them into prison but there was a twist. He introduced himself to his brothers, forgave them and later settled them in the best part of the land in Egypt. On Joseph’s part, reconciliation was achieved through his sincere and total forgiveness of his brothers for the evil they had committed against him. Forgiveness is a vital part of the Christian experience. It helps us to relate with God and become responsible to other people, even our enemies. I wonder if I can refer you to two of the many passages in the bible that talk about forgiveness. They are as follows: “For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins (Matthew 6:14-15). Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamour 20

and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you (Ephesians 4:31-32). Yes! God has forgiven you of your past because of Jesus Christ and he wants you to make a fresh start in 2016. The power is in your hands now whether you want to forgive whoever had offended you or not. Joseph forgave his awful brothers and Victoria Lebrec, the cyclist, forgave the skip lorry driver who took her leg off. She claimed in the news item that she has set herself free from bitterness and resentment and hence, moved on. Likewise, Joseph told his brothers, “Do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you” (Genesis 45: 5) God had been with Joseph in Egypt, and then God saved the lives of his whole family through him. I wonder whether you have realised that God may have taken you through your experiences so that you could lead other people to a better situation after forgiving the perpetrators. In doing so, you could have saved yourself and them from trouble. However, some situations may be very difficult and need time to heal. It may take months or years but forgiveness is still available. This year, may I suggest to you that you use the examples of Victoria Legrec and Joseph the dreamer, to bring reconciliation into your life and that of others so that you can be in a better position to make a great start. Have a blessed and prosperous New Year. Yours sincerely,

garden view
By Rachel Leverton
Gardening resolutions I
’m a sucker for resolutions. I make loads every year though I have to admit I break most of them too. But it’s January and time for a spot of gardening self-improvement. To this end here are my gardening resolutions.
1. I will take a daily walk around my plot and pull out a few weeds as I go. I will not wait until I can’t stick a pin between the dandelions. Let’s face it gardeners are great procrastinators. But by doing a little and often we can keep our plots looking spick and span.
2. I will not leave seed sowing until it’s too late! This is my personal nemesis. I get carried away by all the glorious seed catalogues, order dozens of packets then pop them in a drawer and forget about them.
3. I will plant all the plants I buy from a nursery as soon as a get them home and definitely before their flowers drop off and they turn up their little green toes. Plants bought from a nursery, especially those in cell pack, are already in less than ideal conditions and letting them dehydrate further will make for a sick, leggy plant more prone to disease. Preparation is the key here. I will make sure I have the correct pots, enough potting compost and the time to spare before I buy. 22
Harworth Today
4. I will clean my gardening tools at the end of each day spent gardening. This is sensible because dirty tools can spread disease. Mild bleach (one part bleach to 10 parts water) or an organic cleaner, which I prefer, will make sure they’re ready for use next time.
5. I will buy another water butt and water my plants faithfully, particularly my pots. Lack of water produces weak root systems. If I know I won’t have the time I’ll invest in an irrigation system. 6. I will start another compost bin. it’s not difficult and will help the environment as I’ll be able to recycle even more of my waste vegetable matter. There are small drums and bins which will suit even the tiniest spot. 7.
I will help wildlife by making sure I provide habitats for birds, bugs and beasties. Any effort I put in will be repaid tenfold. A garden is a little ecosystem. If it functions well there will be natural pest control, pollination and soil conditioning. Those are my resolutions. You may have different ones and that’s fine. I’m sure we’ll break a few along the way but no-one said the path to perfection, particularly gardening perfection was easy. TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 744278

Slimming World members lose an amazing 3,300 stone since January 2015! This New Year thousands of people in Blyth, Bawtry, Tickhill and Rossington areas will be embarking on a bid to lose weight and get fit. And Slimming World Consultants in the area are urging dieters to ditch the fad diets and choose a weight-loss plan they can sustain. New research shows that UK weight-loss organisation Slimming World is the most popular and easiest plan to stick to in the long term. Nicky who runs a Slimming World group in Bawtry, says faddy diets aren’t the answer: “Lots of people start January with the best of intentions but by the end of the month so many of them have given up, defeated by hunger, boredom or feelings of deprivation. I want people to know that losing weight doesn’t have to be that way, that not all slimming attempts are doomed and not all ‘diets’ are the same. It’s easy to be wooed by the plans that promise the fastest loss, but it’s really important this New Year that slimmers think sensibly about which plan they choose and look at which offer the most chance of long-term success. Diets based on deprivation can be very unhealthy and are almost impossible to keep up, meaning you’re bound to throw in the towel and will probably be left feeling like a failure by February!” Christine who runs the Tickhill Slimming World group says the key is to choose a realistic healthy eating plan and get support to make lifestyle changes. And Jackie the Rossington consultant is urging slimmers to choose Slimming World after research by Marketing Week magazine, published this January, found that the organisation is the UK’s most popular way to lose weight. A separate recent YouGov poll of 2,000 slimmers who had tried one of the two most popular UK weight-loss clubs in the past two years also discovered people found Slimming World’s Food Optimising plan easier to follow and simpler to stick with in the long run. The YouGov survey found that 92% of respondents who were attending a Slimming World group said they didn’t feel hungry and 88% enjoyed being able to eat normal every day foods instead of being pushed to purchase ready meals or convenience foods.
Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan encourages members to satisfy their appetite on hundreds of healthy ‘Free Foods’, including fruit and veg, pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meat, fish, eggs, pulses and fatfree dairy, freely without the need for weighing, counting and measuring. It means they can enjoy all their favourite meals just by making small changes to the way they shop, cook and eat and still eat the same healthy dishes as the rest of their family. The beauty of Slimming World’s plan is that it addresses the psychological needs of slimmers: “When people think about losing weight they expect to feel hungry and deprived, but since it began in 1969 Slimming World’s plan has always been about helping people to lose weight without feeling like that. Human nature means that the minute something’s forbidden you only want it more, so with Slimming World no foods, even high-fat snacks and alcohol, are banned, they’re just limited. Because you can satisfy your appetite on ‘Free Foods’ you don’t ever have to feel hungry and it’s easier to reduce the amount of unhealthy foods you’re eating so, over time with the right support, this new balanced way of eating becomes second nature” said Dani the Blyth consultant In fact getting support is as important as changing eating habits: “There’s no denying that changing the habits of a lifetime can be challenging and there will be times, perhaps when your weight loss slows down or a ‘bad week’ leads to a temporary gain, when it can be tempting to give up. That’s where getting support week in, week out to make changes and keep them up comes in. At Slimming World members develop the skills and tools to overcome the psychological and emotional challenges that every slimmer faces at some point, including learning to be kind to yourself and get ‘back on the horse’ when you do have a blip. Anyone who wants to lose weight this New Year will find a world of support at the their nearest Slimming World group” continued Christine. To join a Slimming World group near you, see the advert in this magazine or alternatively visit www.slimmingworld.com for more information. T

Speed Detection Operations The Neighbourhood Policing Team have continued to work with pupils and staff from the local schools on active speed detection in the area, where the team have carried out active speed detection dates with the local schools in November 2015. The project is aimed at educating motorists however if circumstances meet the criteria prosecutions will also take place. The project has already shown benefit to the area, between January and November 2015 approximately 2,400 vehicles have been monitored with around 14 warnings issued for motorists exceeding the speed limit. This equates to around 0.7% of vehicles monitored were shown speeding in the area. Some motorists have also attended the All Saints School where the pupils have carried out a speed awareness presentation and completed survey questions with the motorists to educate them on the dangers of speeding. The
feedback from the pupils and motorists has been very positive in relation to these classroom presentations which focus on education and awareness of speed rather than prosecution.
Fatal Four Nottinghamshire Police have other the past few months been carrying out fatal 4 and speed enforcement under operation Drosometer in the East Bassetlaw area including Harworth and Bircotes. As a result several motorists were issued with TORS (Traffic offence reports) for various offences including speeding, failing to wear seatbelt, using mobile phone whilst driving and also drink driving. The operation also aimed to educate motorists where if they were issued with a TOR they also had the option if they met the criteria, of attending a speed awareness/education course which they then had to pay for the course instead of receiving 3 points on their licence. The Fatal four initiative will continue throughout the festive period around Christmas and new year which coincides with the usual annual drink drive awareness campaign.

PRIORITY SETTING MEETING From the Priority Setting Meeting held on October 7th 2015 the three local priorities have been identified from feedback received from the community by the priority survey forms regarding issues of greatest concern and issues the public wanted the safer Neighborhood Team to tackle. The three local priorities have been identified as :Priority 1 : Anti Social Behaviour Priority 2 : Environmental Issues Priority 3 : Speeding/Road Safety The Next Priority Setting Meeting will be held on the 6th January 2015 at 2pm at the Harworth Town Hall.

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - JANUARY 2016 REFERENDUM ON THE ADOPTION OF THE HARWORTH AND BIRCOTES NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN ON 3RD DECEMBER. Well, you did it – the people of Harworth and Bircotes voted YES to having a Neighbourhood Plan. The vote for it was a resounding 85%, so thank you to all those who turned out in dreadful weather, and to those who completed and returned their postal vote. Voting for the Plan means the community will have a bigger say in proposed developments; it also means we get 25% of the Community Infrastructure Levy developers have to pay, as opposed to 15% without a Plan. This money has to be used for future infrastructure developments in our area, the Government is very strict about how it can be spent, and there is a list of what it can/cannot be used for. IT’S A NEW YEAR At this time of year I usually reflect on what has been achieved during the past 12 months. During 2015 we have seen several new initiatives:• The disappearance of the Airey houses and appearance of new council houses was a major success for H&B. Phase 1 has been completed, phase 2 is in progress, and over the next two years phases 3 and 4 will deliver more new council homes. I can assure you that Bassetlaw District Council has committed financially to the total building programme. • The New Cemetery has opened • We have a Neighbourhood Plan • A Community Bus Service is now available every Thursday, and • The Citizens Advice Bassetlaw is here every Thursday morning • A Community Garden and Miners Memorial was created; you will see more planting when warmer spring weather arrives. Did you know that Keith Ashton, the stone mason, also
created the soldiers memorial in the Falkland Islands? • Improvements to the public realm (pathways, kerbs, surfaces, to you and me) have been made to the area at the top of Colliery Road; other areas on Scrooby Road are part of a long term project • Steve Bowman, Town clerk, retired in May, and we welcomed Wendy Davies as his replacement I commend the people of this community: the Christmas Lighting event (do you like the real Christmas tree? – I think it looks great) and the Dedication of the Miners Memorial meant residents had to use the car park behind the Medical Centre. Nobody complained, everyone understood. I also think we are lucky that the staff at the Medical Centre are so supportive and helpful. Regarding developments, we have seen Aldi and The Factory Shop appear, and new housing on Scrooby Road and Bawtry Road, along with steady growth on the industrial sites. SO WHAT ABOUT 2016? • I am aware of other proposals in the pipeline which, if they materialise, will mean local jobs in future years. • The money released from the sale of Cemetery Lodge is in Council’s reserve account and is earmarked for major projects, such as resurfacing the car park in warmer weather. All proposals have to be viewed in terms of value for money and benefit to the community.
build it • And recently we got planning permission for the installation of a column next to the Police station on which will sit a camera. This means high quality CCTV will at last be operating here – we’ve only been waiting 7 years! SECURITY, AND PAYMENT BY DEBIT CARD A resident contacted me who likes to pay her bills using her bank debit card but can only find one shop that does this. I checked it out for her; seems shops are reluctant to offer this service and the post office has never done it - I was also surprised to discover very little security glass to protect the friendly staff in the Bircotes branch, but I am assured the arrangements meet post office standards. PARKING ON PRIVATE GRASS VERGES I asked Highways about this in response to enquiries from local residents. However, it is difficult to determine exactly what the law says on this topic, because other factors and circumstances come into play, such as location, who owns it, public access - is the verge specifically mentioned in the deeds? I would suggest that it would be worth attending the free weekly session that some solicitors hold, armed with your deeds and photographs, to get the right legal advice before considering taking any action.
• We have had our plans passed for a nursery and changing rooms – now we have to find the funding to

SATURDAY 30TH APRIL: TOUR DE YORKSHIRE AND HARWORTH AND BIRCOTES To honour the memory of Tommy Simpson, it has been agreed that the race will leave South Yorkshire at Tickhill Spital and head towards Harworth Crossroads. The cyclists will then travel along Scrooby Road and down Wright’s Hill, turning left on the A614 to re-enter Yorkshire as they approach Bawtry. I have no further information as yet, only that Bassetlaw District Council, the Police, D.M.B.C. and the race organisers will be working in partnership to ensure safety for the cyclists and no disruption to the race.

TO MAKE YOU SMILE Sometimes I feel I should have a bed at the District Council, especially on days when I have been up since 5am writing reports in preparation for the meetings that day, which sometimes start at 8.30am. I also get too busy at times, which means that my domestic arrangements are not my number 1 priority - for example, I indulged in a new three piece suite in the summer, and bought new curtains to compliment the changed colour scheme (thank goodness for online shopping). I unpacked them and laid them on the back bed; to my shame they are still there, along with a pile of items destined for the charity shop, not to mention the stack of cardboard boxes in the garage that one day I will take to the dump. So my New Year resolution is to get my priorities a bit more balanced – I wonder how long it will last!

Tickhill and District Lions May we start by wishing you all a Happy New Year and saying a big thank you to everyone who supported our Grand Christmas Draw which was held at Tickhill Cricket Club on December 15th. To the companies, listed below, who donated prizes, the many friends who also provided items, the local businesses and individuals who helped us sell the tickets and, of course, to all of you who purchased the tickets -thank you very much. If you were one of the many lucky winners then we have probably already been in touch but you should find a list of winners wherever tickets were on sale. During December we escorted Santa on his sleigh round most of the roads within the Tickhill and District area giving out hundreds of Christmas cards and receiving many cards and wish lists. Thank you to all who greeted us so warmly and made such kind donations. It is wonderful to see the looks on the faces of the young children when they meet Santa. At Tickhill and District Lions we pay all of our own expenses and administration costs so you can be sure that every penny you donated will be carefully spent helping deserving causes over the coming year. So thank you once again from Tickhill and District Lions and from all the people that your donations will help. List of local Companies who have donated Grand
