September already, and almost time for back to school. I have had a lovely summer and I hope that you have too. I had a very relaxing holiday this year, revisiting a regular holiday spot in Lanzarote enjoying lots of family time and setting a new personal best - reading 10 books in a fortnight!
ϬϭϯϬϮ ϯϮϮϭϮϭ
A big part of summer in our household was of course spent awaiting exam results, and as I write this we have just received the news we had been waiting for. I am very pleased to tell you that my son will be leaving home in a few short weeks to begin University life! Whatever you have been up to this summer I hope that you too have managed to enjoy the many dry, bright and sunny days, long may they continue into September. In particular in September please keep your fingers crossed for dry weather during the weekend of 17th and 18th September when the Clumber Park Food Festival will be taking place (find details of how to win tickets inside this magazine) and also T-Fest will be taking place in Tickhill on the Saturday. The October issues will be delivered to you late September. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 9th September. Enjoy September and I will be back in a months’ time with your October magazine.

r health and healthcare.) (Aiming to help you, to be in control of you Good news Many of you will be pleased to hear that a new telephone system will soon be in place at the surgery. It incorporates a system to let us know our position in the queue, a facility which will allow us individually to decide whether or not to hold on or hang up. The set-up date is the middle of September. Appointments booked but not kept. The number of appointments made but not kept is still at a worrying level. The latest figures for July are:Colliery 53 Of these 15 were booked on the day as urgently needing to see a GP and 38 were pre-booked appointments Tickhill 66 Of these 46 were booked on the day as urgently needing to see a GP and 20 were pre-booked appointments. Please note that only 1 of all these appointments was booked online. Point to ponder We all, as patients, grumble about not being able to get an appointment when we need one, but here were 119 which were booked and wasted. Clearly not the fault of the practice. Stand up to improve your health. Studies have claimed major health benefits for standing for much of the day as opposed to sitting. “So why is sitting so damaging? One thing it does is change the way our bodies deal with sugar. When you eat, your body breaks down the food into glucose, which is then transported in the blood to other cells. Glucose is an essential fuel but persistently high levels increase your risk of diabetes and heart disease. Your pancreas produces the hormone insulin to help get your glucose levels back down to normal, but how efficiently your body does that is affected by how physically active you are. Dr John Buckley and a team of researchers from the University of Chester conducted a simple experiment. They asked 10 people who work at an estate agents to stand for at least three hours a day for a week. “We asked all the volunteers to wear an accelerometer - a movement monitor - to record just how much moving about they were doing. They also wore heart rate
6
HARWORTH TODAY
monitors and had glucose monitors that measured their blood sugar levels constantly, day and night.” He said “the Chester researchers took measurements on days when the volunteers stood, and when they sat around. When they looked at the data there were some striking differences. As we had hoped, blood glucose levels fell back to normal levels after a meal far more quickly on the days when the volunteers stood than when they sat. There was also evidence, from the heart rate monitors that they were wearing, that by standing they were burning more calories.” “If we look at the heart rates,” John Buckley explained, “we can see they are quite a lot higher actually - on average around 10 beats per minute higher and that makes a difference of about 0.7 of a calorie per minute.” “Now that doesn’t sound like much, but it adds up to about 50 calories an hour. If you stand for three hours a day for five days that’s around 750 calories burnt. Over the course of a year it would add up to about 30,000 extra calories, or around 8lb of fat.” “If you want to put that into activity levels,” Dr Buckley says, “then that would be the equivalent of running about 10 marathons a year. Just by standing up three or four hours in your day at work” or at home. Dr Buckley thinks that “although going out and doing exercise offers many proven benefits, our bodies also need the constant, almost imperceptible increase in muscle activity that standing provides. Simple movement helps us to keep our all-important blood sugar under control” “We can’t all stand up at work but the researchers believe that even small adjustments, like standing while talking on the phone, going over to talk to a colleague rather than sending an email, or simply taking the stairs, will help.” Add up the time you spend at work or at home preparing a meal, making drinks, doing daily household chores, walking to and fro and over the day 3 hours becomes an achievable target which can help most of us keep our blood sugar levels under control. The PPG (Patients Group) exists to represent ALL patients and can be contacted via email at tickhillandcollieryppg@yahoo.com or in writing via the comments box in either reception area. We look forward to hearing from you. TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 969696

Arts Review & what’s going on - September 2016
I know I am not alone in this, I get pretty annoyed when an exhibition dresses itself up in intellectual twoddle in order to justify its existence, cost and your attention. The last exhibition at the Harley gallery, for me, was one such show, (well, actually there were two of them). Two shows about vases, one was a vast number of large red vases. It’s a joy in itself to get a huge number of human sized red objects in a room, but this exhibition was a discussion about Chinese production. And the other, which had the amusing title of the ‘Arms of the Portland Vase’ again should have been all about the artists wit and skill with image, but got tangled up in Greco-Roman architectural theory. For me this exhibition showed the skill of the exhibition team at the Harley Gallery in their ability to display dull stuff really well. The real joy at the Harley this summer has been the new Portland collection galleries and all they contain – but all is not lost the next two shows look like a reason to journey down the road again. Harley Gallery Welbeck k until 23 October GARDENS FOR THE DUCHESS In celebration of the ‘Year of the Garden’ and exhibition of rare stereoscopic autochromes of the Edwardian gardens at Welbeck, dating from 1911-1928. And NEW THREADS by NORA FOK. The artist has been exploring the interaction between art, science, mathematics and the natural world. She has combined her longstanding techniques of crafting fine nylon microfilament, which she knits, knots, plaits and weaves by hand to make jewellery with new technologies. This has resulted in an exhibition that will include pieces that range from bodywear to sculpture. This looks like a fascinating show of beautiful made objects www.harleygallery.co.uk Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery y Wed to Fri 10.00 – 16.30, Sat & Sun 10.30 – 4.15 Exhibition: until 11th September Doncaster Art Club: Annual Exhibition and until 18th September ‘Chris Moss: Sculptures’ sculptures in wire depicting various animals including greyhounds, horses and sheep. The exhibition also includes items from the Museum Service’s Natural History and Fine Art Collections. visiting the exhibition is in for a real treat because they will have the rare opportunity to see images and listen to stories that have never been shown or told outside Gypsy and Traveller communities; that’s something not to be missed.” But most importantly is the hand in dates for ‘Doncaster Open’ exhibition which will feature your work so long as you enter it! Forms available from the Museum and local libraries. Delivery dates 22 to 25 September. Life drawing: Saturday 17th 111pm and 2 - 4pm Art History Lecture: Friday 16th September: ‘First past the Post’ From the earliest paintings on cave walls to the modern art of Elizabeth Frink, the horse has always been a popular subject for the artist. In this lecture we look at images of horses, both on and off the racecourse Lectures take place at Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery on Chequer Road, starting at 10.30 am and lasting for an hour and a half. Each lecture costs £5 to be paid at the museum reception and includes refreshments. TFEST T - Tickhill 17 September is happening again with lots of bands and music and fun www.t-fest.co.uk CAST in Doncasterr Tue 6 Sep-Sat 10 ‘Dead Sheep’ The dramatic inside story of Margaret Thatcher’s downfall. In 1989 a seemingly invincible Margaret Thatcher ruthlessly sacked Geoffrey Howe, her Foreign Secretary. She foolishly thought she had nothing to fear from her one time friend and political ally. After all, his speaking skills had famously been compared to ‘being savaged by a dead sheep’! But, inspired by his wife Elspeth, Howe destroyed the Prime Minister’s career with one of the deadliest political speeches ever made. Dead Sheep mixes tragedy and comedy in an entertaining tale of loyalty, betrayal and revenge. This acclaimed witty new drama enjoys its national tour première at Cast and stars Spitting Image’s Steve Nallon as Margaret Thatcher, Graham Seed (Nigel Pargetter in The Archers), Paul Bradley (Eastenders, Holby City) and Carol Royale (Life Without George, Heartbeat and Casualty). Harworth Colliery Football Club September 2016! Hello and Welcome to our September Update and welcome to all players, Supporters and Parents to the new season.
As we go to print the 1st team season is under way and this is the only place to start as for the 1st time in over 25 years Brendan Wilson will not be at the forefront of the senior club as he is standing down due to Family commitments. Brendan has given everything to the club, from being a player with the Juniors then onto the Colts, it was always going to be that Bren would go onto play for the 1st team and become Captain for a number of years, winning the Player of the season on a number of occasions. When he could no longer play at the standard he required from himself he went into managing the club, which he has done now for 6 years missing one where he returned to play. The decision he has made was the only decision to make and the club and the players respect this whole heartedly, we will miss his passion, desire and the fact that he is Harworth Colliery through and through and is a role model for any new comer into the club. His commitment will not be touched and we wish him and all the family all the very best for the future and he knows the club will welcome him with open arms if and when he may want to return. So a new management team is at the helm and it’s Brendan’s coaches from last year Lee Danysz and Mark Latham, we wish them well and know that all the club will back them to the hilt. The aim remains the same and that is promotion something that still bites from last year, so get up and back the lads whenever possible. As the slogan says ‘Together is stronger’ and we need you. I would like to thank our Sponsors again for 20162017, Jones and Co Solicitors will remain as Ground sponsors, Lifting Support Services as shirt sponsors and Farmhouse Choice as Match day sponso,. You give us the platform to succeed and we cant thank you enough.

We do though have Player sponsorship and board advertising still available. Player sponbsorship is a great way to get involved with the club for any small business as its just £30 and will give your company exposure as you get a programme page on a certain date and link on the website. Board is an 8X2 ft sign around the ground at just £150 for the season and £100 after that. All details are below so don’t hesitate to get in touch, all funds are used for the whole of the club and it enables us to ensure that the Juniors remain cost free, the only club in the County that doesn’t charge. It’s an exciting time as the Ladies team now is registerd and affiliated and from the open trials we have 25 players signed on, we wish the ladies and Nick Burton the manager well, and will give further details next month. The Juniors have doubled their teams from 3 to 6 and will start in September, 8/9/10/13/15’s and 16’s, we are slowly getting back to where we should be and that is a team for every age group. There is so much enthusiasm around the Juniors this term it is great to see and with the 15’s and 16’s doing so well last season they are the beacon that the rest of the teams need to strive for. We are also continuing with our Mini Kicker sessions which have been running on a Sunday for 5-8 year olds, this when the season starts will move to a Saturday Morning 10am-11am its just £2.50 with food and drink laid on afterwards in the Pavilion. I look forward to people getting in touch whether that be enquiring about sponsorship or the Mini Kickers or just wanting to get involved with the club, again all details are below, thanks for your time and see you at the Jones and Co Recreational ground very soon. See more about us on our Website Pitch Hero/Harworth Colliery, or on Facebook or Twitter @HCIFC or the Ladies @HCILFC, please get in touch, we are a progressive club that needs your support. Regards Jonathan Wilson Chairman jonycw@hotmail.co.uk @jonycw.

community Community Whoever you are, please try acting like a responsible dog owner and pick it up, instead of expecting local residents to clean up after you. Waste Bins in the Old Cemetery: I have been asked to politely point out that these large bins are purely for waste generated LQ WKH FHPHWHU\ H J GHDG ȵ RZ ers, wreaths; they are not there for people to deposit waste from their own gardens. To Make You Say ‘Aah’ Last summer the female hedgehog living in my garden appeared with 2 hoglets, which are now young adults. This year the mother appeared with her latest tiny hoglet. I always place food in the same spot every evening along with clean water, not far from my back door, and most nights I watch them, one by one, trundle across my lawn and feed. I always know if they are around, even on the darkest nights, because I hear them before I see WKHP È‚ WKH\ VQXÉž H VQHH]H DQG snort so noisily- I can understand why they are referred to as hogs! Q. How did Beatrix Potter manage to draw Mrs Tiggy Winkle when hedgehogs only appear at night?
