the NOVEMBER 2014 edition
“Aim for the moon. If you miss, you may hit a star.” W. Clement Stone
Early in October I spent a couple of days at a Publishers Conference, meeting with many other publishers of magazines just like this one. People travelled to the Heart of England conference centre from up and down the country, one even arriving from Australia! It is always lovely to spend time with fellow publishers and we all learn from one another and some good friendships have been formed. Lots of planning for 2015 took place, and yes I will be aiming for the moon during my 10th anniversary year! I was honoured to be shortlisted for 3 awards at the evening awards ceremony, and I came home with a bottle of bubbly for ‘meeting deadlines’! We have not one but 2 prize giveaways this month. We have the return of the ‘Win a family ticket to Peter Pan Pantomime’ and also 10 pairs of tickets to the Festive Gift Fair at the NEC. The Racecourse Pantomime is looking like it is going to be fabulous entertainment and I heard great reports of the Festive Gift Fair from those who went last year, in fact I am planning a trip myself this year. You may be surprised how few people enter the giveaways we run, so you have every chance of winning prizes if you regularly enter. Look out for the details of how to enter inside the magazine.
The December issues will be delivered to you late November. I can’t believe that we are back to producing Christmas issues already! If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 14th November. December magazines are always the busiest of the year so do get your contributions to me on time.
Enjoy November and I will be back in a months’ time with your December magazine!
Best wishes, Paula x

Fun things... Autumn has properly arrived. Bbbrrr .. come on in! The kettle is on. How are you getting on? School is into its rhythm for this year. Some of us have kids newly into junior school / high school / college or uni. I have found out each stage has its own nice bits and of course ... challenges. Have you found the same? But each stage needs its own version of fun. At each stage with our 3, I have found that “fun” means different things. For toddlers, fun is easy ... a go on the roundabout, swings or a tickle session works well. Moving on into junior age, things get a bit more complicated (and probably more expensive). Phrases like cinema, gokarts and gameconsole are where they live. High schoolers are unique beasts. Grab every opportunity
you can. A trip to a theme park if that is their thing. “Go-ape” works well it seems. (I haven’t done that yet but know some who have.) Oddly enough, with our young adults ... it has come back home to a board game round the table with a brew and a biscuit. But I think the lesson all along has been to try and make sure “fun” is on the schedule. As we all know, time goes quickly. It doesn’t seem 2 minutes since our daughter’s definition of fun was “peek-a-boo”. But that was 22 years ago now. Speaking of “fun”, I wanted to invite you along to some fun we are trying for the first time. From 12 November through 8 December, we are partnering with a number of shops around the village for a “Messy Nativity” (connected with our Messy Church). What does that mean? I am glad you asked! These shops (number TBA) will host a sheep somewhere in their shop with a name tag, just waiting
to be discovered by some child/ parent/carer. The challenge is to find all the sheep, jot down the name of the shop and the name of the sheep on a paper I will provide. You can either pick one up at the library (Holmescarr) or download one from our website (www. communitybaptist.co.uk). To make it a bit simpler, only shops in the central part of the village will be used (from ASDA to the shops on King Avenue). Bring the completed paper to Messy Church (8 or 10 December @ 3.30) to be included in a draw for a special prize. It is sort of like a Christmas-y scavenger hunt. It will be fun! As always, the door is always open and the kettle is on. We are now a bit more accessible at the Holmescarr Centre. The office is just down from the Library and I would love to meet you. See you next month!

Rossington Councillor’s Update According to Police figures, in the 6 months to 7th October total crime was down 9%, although it was a case of good news and bad news; it was summer, so alcohol related crime was up, but drug crime was down. All in all Rossington has the lowest crime in Doncaster.
Even with the figures above the day before the beer festival on the Welfare, someone stole six metal gates from the fence around the field. The threads on the hinges had been welded, so someone had to grind this off before removing the gates! If anyone has any information regarding this, please contact the police, the welfare or me. Metal theft has almost vanished with the new payment system at scrapyards, so this had to be well organised. Or someone who needed a lot of gates for their fence! Floodlights for the Skate Park have temporarily been put on hold until we can sort out the placing of them, the power supply and until the waste bins are used more by our youth. They sit next to a bin and throw their rubbish on the floor, so we have to litter pick the area twice of three times a week. When challenged it is, of course, someone else. Some of their older friends who have a car leave an outline of their car as they throw all the rubbish out of the window on to the Welfare car park floor. It has to stop. At the last Council meeting, Bob Johnson, Cabinet Member for Development etc, announced that work on the inland port had started and the preparatory work has; so watch this space for news. When it does start we get some Section 106 monies to train some of our people to work at the 10

iPort as it is now known. This will be publicised around the village and run from the Opportunity Centre in the Holmescarr Centre. FARRRS is going well, I promise not to repeat everything each month, but I will report on any significant developments. As soon as it is open then perhaps all the HGV’s that travel on West End Lane (and sometimes on Clay Flat Lane as well) may decide to go via the motorway. HGV’s have even been seen on Lansbury, so I have asked the Police to stop this if possible. There seems to be a plethora of fly tipping as our Stronger Communities Officers have noticed and reported quite a few in the last month, including one from which evidence has been obtained for a prosecution. Get Doncaster Walking 2015 will take place in January or February next year. Right up our Street had a party at Holmescarr, had a trip to the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester and had a Graffiti Art session at the Ragusa Centre. The market is full and the traders are demanding improvement work to start soon as do we all. For those that receive this on time a reminder that there will be Halloween related activities at the Holmescarr Centre on Wednesday 29th October. Please don’t forget our bonfire on the 5th of November, come early there are market stalls, and there is live music before and after the fireworks. Kindest Regards

Tickhill & District Lions This year’s bonfire display will be held on Saturday 8th November at the Tickhill Cricket Club on Alderson Drive. We have a new firework supplier who has promised spectacular displays. The event is jointly being organised by the Tickhill and District Lions and Tickhill Cricket Club. Entrance is free but the Lions will be rattling buckets and, as ever all the proceeds will go towards deserving causes within the local community. Your donations are greatly appreciated. Proceedings will begin at 5pm with the lighting of the Bonfire followed by two firework displays. There will also be a BBQ selling locally supplied sausages and beef burgers.
bringing of your own cans etc. will not be allowed. We would ask everyone to respect the hallowed turf of the cricket field and to please use the litter bins. Aside from the Bonfire the Lions Christmas draw tickets are now available with lots of great prizes on offer including a cycle voucher for all those budding Tour de France enthusiasts. Ticket will be on sale throughout the village and on our stall at the Late Night Shopping event. The draw takes place on Tuesday 16th December. If you planning to attend the Tickhill late Night Shopping event on Thursday 27th November look out for the Lions Christmas float. T
The firework display will be on the playing area with excellent visibility all-round the boundary so young children will be able to find somewhere with a good view. One in three women is affected at some point by bladder, pelvic floor or prolapse symptoms. Often very distressing, these problems WILL NOT improve without action & can get worse as you get older.
WOULD YOU LIKE AN X RAY OR A SCAN?
Ask for Jenny Blizard or Kate Stower who are specialists in Women’s Health Physiotherapy including bladder / bowel problems, ante-natal and post natal care, sexual problems, pelvic & lower back pain
For people experiencing painful joint or spinal problems, the answer to this question is often yes. The belief is that if we could just see inside the body, the cause of the problem would be clear and the solution evident. If only it was this simple! Of course, x rays and scans are of great value in certain clinical situations e.g. fractures, osteoporosis and arthritic diseases. What they don’t do, however, is explain pain. The most likely finding following an x ray or scan is degenerative changes. Degenerative changes occur when joint surfaces become scuffed and less smooth or soft tissues such as discs become drier and less spongy. This is much like developing grey hairs and wrinkles. Genetics and lifestyle (e.g. smoking and poor diet) may speed up this process but degenerative changes will occur in all of us eventually. And so it cannot be possible for degenerative changes per se to cause pain otherwise our clinic would be full of over 55’s (it isn’t!) and the nation’s elderly would all be in agony (they aren’t!) Often there isn’t a direct relationship between x ray findings and a patient’s clinical presentation. A patient might have a hugely restricted and painful hip suggestive of severe osteoarthritis with little evidence on x ray. Conversely, a patient may have gross degenerative changes on x ray but complain of little more than a minor discomfort whilst running.

E: gandgweddingcarhire@yahoo.co.uk
So, rather than an x ray or scan, a thorough assessment and detailed examination is often far more useful in working out the cause of your problem and how best to treat it.

Belle Female JUNE 2013 3.5 Years No No Yes
Hello I’m Belle, I came to Mayflower as a puppy and I had extremely deformed front legs which have now been corrected. I am a wonderful, friendly Lurcher who only wants to please. I am looking for a new home because I wasn’t getting along with other dogs on a walk but I am responding very well to my carers training. I can get a little over the top with my willingness though and I will need firm leadership. I will need to be an only dog but I do behave extremely well in the home and I am very loving towards children. If you would like to know anymore about me please don’t hesitate to ask one of my carers.

Cleo Female 14 July 2014 3 Months ? Yes Yes
Cleo was taken into care with her sister because their previous owner hadn’t realised how much hard work two small kittens were. Kittens of this age can be very destructive and need careful handling and socialisation if they are to grow into sociable, loving young cats. Cleo is very loving and would happily be a lapcat given the chance. She loves to play with other cats so it would be nice if she could be rehomed with a friend Her sister has been rehomed but Cleo is still waiting for her new family to arrive. Please don’t make her wait too long.

Garden View
Hedge Your Bets! Ok, so it’s a terrible heading, but November is the perfect time for planting new hedges, and at this time of year it’s a very safe bet. Prior to the use of containerised plants (which can be planted at almost any time of the year) planting between November and March was a gardeners only option, and as far as the plants are concerned it’s still the best by far. When plants are dormant (asleep) they will hardly even notice being moved, and by spring when their new leaves emerge their roots will have already pushed through the surrounding soil in their new home. Hedges are often thought of as hard work, time consuming and have been at the centre of heated neighbourly debates (whether it’s cutting them too low or letting them grow too high). They are great for blocking out unsightly views, adding privacy, and also make a wonderful place for wildlife to live, rest and nest. For the past 3 years we’ve had a variety of birds nesting in our Yew hedge and the addition of extra life in the garden always pleases me. If you’re looking for a quick solution to a green screen, then you have two options, either instant (such as a 2m high instant hedge, pre grown, trained and clipped, perfect for the impatient gardener), or Leylandii conifers. As I write this I can hear 22
ROSSINGTON TODAY
the screams, but it really is the best option for speed and it’s costeffective. Do be aware that legally, as of a couple of years ago, you have to keep its growth contained to 2m high if on a boundary (this does not apply to any other species). For the more patient gardener, try the classic evergreen Yew hedging. Like most beautiful things in life, it’s more expensive to buy. It’s also slower growing (15-30cm per year), but does only require cutting once per year in September, and will provide you with the most beautiful hedge. I also favour the evergreen Portuguese laurel, which has a smaller leaf than the more common cherry laurel, or Beech if it doesn’t need to be evergreen. For a smaller hedge it has to be Box, but alternatives include Lavender, Berberis, Lonicera, and for the perfect no-cut low hedge go for a small Hebe, (simply choose a variety which only grows to the height you actually want the hedge to grow to). Whichever hedge you choose, the ground preparation should be the same. For containerised, bare-root or root-balled hedges, dig out a trench which follows the line of the proposed hedge, this should be at least one and a half times wider and deeper than the rootball. Fork over the base of the trench and return some of the soil, so that when
you plant the hedge it sits at the same level as previously planted (i.e. not too deep). Backfill with the removed soil, add a handful of bonemeal per plant, and dig in. Firm with your boot then water well before mulching with 5cm of compost, manure or bark clippings. Happy winter gardening
Until next time, happy gardening ,
Lee .

The Beer Festival has come and gone, and a very successful two days it was. Although for some of us it was from Wednesday to Monday, six days of hard work. However seeing the hundreds of people in the marquee was very, very satisfying. For once we didn’t have any problems with the weather, a bit of rain on Saturday morning but nothing to worry about. There was usual spoiling tactic by some idiot on ‘Facebook’ saying that it had been cancelled due to the weather, but Carol Beaumont and Ali Harper put out messages saying that the festival was on. On Saturday it was estimated that there was 450 to 500 people in attendance. And to cap it all we were £5000 under budget! We were let down by a couple of bands, but managed to shuffle things about to fill the gaps and one of the best bands, if not the best, played to an almost empty tent at 1.00pm on Saturday, it was the only time that they could play. We had eight bar staff on and there were still queues 5 deep at the bar. We learned a few lessons, a longer bar, more pumps and more staff, and pick bands that played what was popular. Bigger and better hopefully next year assuming the election goes OK and I and my colleagues are voted in. In September RecyCoal Ltd held a Macmillan Coffee Morning at their Rossington Colliery site to raise money in aid of the cancer charity. The event was held in memory of Steve Newell, an employee of the company, who sadly passed away earlier this year whom had been suffering with cancer. His wife Jackie Newell attended the coffee morning and helped serve the workforce with teas, coffees, and cakes, and helped raise money for the charity. RecyCoal managed to raise £400 from the coffee morning and £100 from an Ice Bucket Challenge held earlier in the month, soaking both the CEO and Site Manager! The total raised was matched by the company, donating £1000 in total to charity. RecyCoal would like to thank everyone for their generosity and support. Steve Merriman has finally decided to bow out completely, he has announced that he will finally be retiring from Good Neighbours at the end of December, he will be sadly missed, and he has done sterling work over the years. This means that new blood will be needed to act as secretary, treasurer and general dogsbody!

Radburn TARA will be running a bus trip to Skipton Yuletide Market this year on either the 7th or 14th December, there are limited seats, so if you wish to go, please contact me on the number below to book or for details of the TARA meeting times (2nd Wednesday in the month at 3.00pm at the Ragusa Centre, Radburn Road) and what they do. See the Skipton Yuletide Festival & Market website for details: http://www.skiptonevents.co.uk/events. php?id=42 I had a meeting with the Rovers regarding the Kicks anti-social behaviour program and due to several factors, low attendance now the football season has started, very low ASB figures for Rossington and a general malaise we have decided to suspend the program and re-launch it in a new format. Keep an eye out for notices about the re-launch. Finally by the time this article is published our new web site should be up and running: www. rossingtonparishcouncil.org.uk and we hope we have made this one easier to use and also hope to keep this much more up to date and proactive.

Open Door Auctions success Open Door Auctions, the local family-run property business specialising in residential sales, has announced the success of its latest auctions – and is encouraging would-be sellers to come along to its upcoming events. The firm hosts bi-monthly auctions in Retford and Gainsborough, and has sold more than 110 properties so far this year. Including 27 homes via two auctions in one week this October, achieving an average of £11,000 above the guide price. The success of Open Door shows that residential auctions are becoming a very popular way to sell property; in fact, in the first six months of 2014, there was a massive 135% increase in sales by auction compared to the first six months of 2013. Recent trends have also shown that more and more vendors are taking “normal” houses to auction, not just homes in need of renovation as seen on the daytime TV show Homes Under the Hammer. This is largely due to protracted sales times: at the moment, the average length of time to sell a house is 13 weeks in Gainsborough, and 19 weeks in both Retford and Worksop. Graeme Naish, co-founder of Open Door Auctions, comments: “Selling at auction can be a great way of making sure that you get the best price and avoid any last-minute snags. With property auctions becoming more and more popular, the increase in demand for homes often leads to prices being pushed up, which is great for vendors who can also protect themselves through setting a reserve price. You also have the benefit of knowing that once the hammer falls, the contract is legally binding and the buyer has to complete within the agreed timeframe, usually 28 days.” “Selling your home at auction is becoming a successful way to move up the property ladder, so we’re inviting anybody interested in auctions to come to our next events in Gainsborough on Thursday 27 November and Retford on Tuesday 2 December.” On the open market, potential buyers are able to make an offer before their own home is on the market. This can lead to complicated chains and a protracted sales process. By focusing on proceedable cash buyers, completing surveys before an auction and requiring a 10% deposit on exchange, auctioneers are able to avoid these sorts of problems. So for vendors looking for a fresh approach for selling their home, and vendors who want a quick, legally-binding sale, selling a home at auction could be the solution. This, combined with the possibility of seeing the price driven up by enthusiastic purchasers bidding against each other, means that selling property at auction is, for many people, a positive way to go.
