Welcome to
the January 2016 edition
And so we welcome another year … 2016 I do hope that readers have had an enjoyable Christmas and that many of you are still enjoying festive treats and time with family and friends. I had such plans to be organised well ahead for Christmas this year so that I didn’t find myself rushing around, missing things, working late and wrapping on Christmas Eve! Unfortunately, as I write this with just 10 days left to go and still with not a card written, 5 magazines to finish, shopping still to do and lots still to organise, it looks like I will be working and preparing right up to Christmas again! Fingers crossed that by the time you read this I will be enjoying a few days of relaxation.

Welcome to 2016! Can someon ne stop winding that timepie ece ... or for those more in the digital age .. can someone please pull the battery out of that clock?! The new year, 2016, has arrived, ready or not. With th he new year (EVERY year) comes the flood of exercise machines on n to the shop floor with promises of the “beachbod” if you would only buy their piece of kit. We whip out the debit card, full of enthusiasm ... having taken step one of that forever New Year’s Resolution of losing weight. Go for it! I know how I feel physically if I put on a few pounds. It does make a huge difference to get it off. But for today, I am wondering ... wondering what 2016 will look like. In October last year, Right Up Our Street pulled off a mammoth effort with the “Handmade Parade”. Yes, I know there were some lessons learned and

Grrou oups ps and nd individuals from allll ove v r th he village participated iin n th the he pa parade p ara r d ra de e and people were lined along the streets of the parade route Now, pulling out my “honesty card”, I will admit I was skeptical of the whole thing. This was something totally out of the ordinary. My concerns were ... “how would this thing go down” ... “will people get it” ... “will it be a dismal failure with people promising to be there but not showing up”. OK, not EVERYONE came who made a costume. costume But even at that, because Messy Church is getting into my blood, I absolutely LOVED to see the interaction between parent/child ... parent/teen ... parent/parent. The making of the costumes was at least (in my mind anyway) half the value of the parade. But then to see the colours, stilt-walkers, costumes and smiling faces of the participants and watchers was priceless.
On O ne off the e mosst cco ommon mmon mm on cco omm mme en nttss to me e sin ince cce e mov oving in into ntto o th he e villa ill age e 13 yye ear ea ars a ag go w s ((a wa and nd oft fte en still en tillll is)) .... “why ti wo ou ulld yo you ev everr wan ant to ant to move to o Rossingto t n”? ”? I know I briefly me m entioned this a few months back. BUT ... here are some of the comments I heard following the parade. “That was the best thing ever.” “I want to invite my mates along next year.” “This is the old spirit of Rossington coming back alive.” I wonder ... with the new road opening up soon ... the Inland Port coming to the area ... is Rossington being set up for a revival? What will 2016 bring? Will it be the year of hope? New beginning? I don’t know. But as Doc told Marty in Back to the Future, the future has not been written yet. It is what we make it to be. What will 2016 bring ... I wonder. Will you be part of its future? As always the kettle is on and the door is open. Have a fab beginning of 2016!

Update from Councillor
Rachael Blake Happy New Year! 2016 is going to be a year of new developments for Rossington – the IPort Academy will be opened by March, closely followed by the FARRS link road in the spring and at the end of April the Tour de Yorkshire will be going past Parrots Corner on the way to the finish in town. IPORT Academy In previous updates I have mentioned that we were still waiting for news of the section 106 monies which will be paid to DMBC once the inland Port start to build. This money will be used to fund the IPORT academy which will be based at the Welfare and pay for a co-ordinator to recruit suitably trained staff. I was concerned that the money wasn’t appearing so asked a question of the Mayor at November’s full council meeting. I was delighted to be told that the first amount of funding has been paid. I asked the DMBC officer responsible for the academy to attend December’s Parish Council meeting to keep them up to date.
carnival atmosphere which shows exactly what is great about Doncaster to a worldwide audience and want to get all communities involved. Lots of information, including the route through our borough, is available on: http://letour. yorkshire.com/ and www.doncaster.gov.uk/tdy What do you think about waste and recycling in Doncaster? The council currently recycles 40% of all household waste, but this needs to increase to 50% by the year 2020 to meet legal requirements. In addition to thinking about how to increase recycling, questions will also be focused on making recycling easier for residents and more cost effective. In order to maximise the efficiency of recycling, some materials like paper and glass should be collected separately. One proposal is to have containers, known as ‘caddies’, to sit inside a wheeled bin for recycling instead of the current green box system, enabling the separate collection of key materials. This would be in addition to the black bin, and residents will be able to voice their opinion on this proposal amongst other issues.
What will this mean for residents? As companies start to move into the Inland Port, they will speak to the co-ordinator who will be based at the Welfare to tell them about the staff that they need and what skills their employees will need. The co-ordinator will then recruit suitable staff, arranging training where required. Having the academy based in Rossington means that residents will be able to easily find out about available jobs and training and being close the Inland Port will put Rossington residents in a really good position to get these new jobs. Details of the when the academy will be opened will be advertised at the Welfare and I will provide further details in next month’s update.
Increasing recycling performance to 50% by 2020 is a big challenge, and it is thought this 10% increase will be difficult to achieve with the small green boxes currently used and the time-consuming nature of the current kerbside sorting method. A public consultation has been launched on Doncaster Council’s approach to waste and recycling.

How to Contact Me
I am aware that the road closure over the weekend of 20 November caused disruption for many residents and residents on Littleworth Lane had to endure much higher levels of traffic than expected. I have been told by the engineers that they are not expecting any further road closures of this scale – any work that needs to be done will be limited to night time closures and the building is on course to be completed and the road opened by the Spring.
I have 2 surgeries in the village but please contact me anytime by phone, text or email. locations to extend the experience and confirm the trainees ability to dive safely.
Located in the centre of Doncaster we are minutes from the Northern Bus Station and Rail station on Greyfriars Road. Our club house has a training room for theory lessons, an equipment room, compressor room, boat house and of course a club bar.
Learning to scuba dive or snorkel takes you to a world that most people don’t get to see and it’s an experience always remembered. So if you’ve wondered just what it’s like to take up scuba diving or snorkeling then why not come along to the pool and have a TRY DIVE? We have all the equipment you need then you can decide if you want to take either activity further.
As a club we meet every Wednesday evening where we meet to socialize, share diving experiences plan dives and offer training for those wishing to extend their qualifications and experience.
All training with us is undertaken by BSAC accredited Diving Instructors and is structured to enable divers to progress safely through each qualification/grade level to meet their diving aspirations.
Why not give someone a Try Dive/or Try Snorkel as a unique gift just £10 for a one and a half hour lesson Are you a PADI (or other agency) diver and fancy trying UK Scuba diving? It’s easy for PADI qualified (or other agency) divers to dive with the BSAC. If you have a recognized qualification you do not have to do any cross over or further training (unless you want to). It doesn’t matter who you trained with (recreational, commercial or military) if you haven’t dived in the UK before or if you haven’t dived for a few seasons – all are very welcome – please join us - come along to the clubhouse on Greyfriars Road at 8:30pm on a Wednesday evening for a chat. The BSAC motto is (dive with friends) and that is exactly what we do.
Our qualified instructors provide a safe and structured training program at the pace set by the trainee. Initial pool training takes place at Hall Cross School for those learning the basics of scuba diving and/or snorkeling and is combined with theory lessons, an important part of learning to scuba dive. Having completed basic training in the pool, Instructors manage the transition to open water diving using Lakeside and other inland 12

Real reasons to go running! We all know there is sound medical evidence that says exercise is good for us. Yet knowing we are keeping heart disease at bay and preventing type II diabetes doesn’t always help us feel motivated in the here and now. So here are some meaningful, real life reasons to run (other forms of exercise are also available!)‌ • It’s free • If you run, you can eat cake. And enjoy it. And who doesn’t want that?! • You can go when you want and where you want. With busy lives and hectic family schedules, a quick run is easier to squeeze in than you might think • You can do away with weigh ins, scales and measuring various body parts‌you can continually monitor the changes when you go out – the more you run, the less you’ll wobble • It’s a brilliant way to keep warm. You’ll get lovely and hot and can probably save yourself a couple of hours of heating on a running day • Fresh air and really experiencing the seasons is good for the soul (go with me on this one!) • You are setting your children up for lifelong healthy habits. It’s no good just badgering children to switch off the tv, turn off computer games and cut down on screen time. They need to see that exercise is a normal part of everyday life for everyone.

Rossington-villagelife.co.uk and Old Rossington Photos The website recently celebrated one year of forming a Community Group to create a sister site for the Facebook page, Old Rossington Photos. It provides an archive that is searchable for the photos that Keith Scott and the villagers post on Facebook and also a repository of stories, articles and events for the future. In that year, we have successfully received 2 grants from Recycoal: one to help with hosting the site and the other for Keith to make his photo albums more secure with new equipment. He has accumulated over 3000 photos which he has regularly shown at venues around the village this year and he is happy to talk about bringing them to others.

Our next project, carried out by Rob Geddes, one of our Committee, will be to publish a piece of work based on the 1838 sale of the land that was Rossington and Littleworth, including the auction lots, the census of who lived there at the time, and showing that some Rossington families have a very long association with the village. There are comparisons with then and now through maps and photos. With the help of our webmaster, Nathan Langer, we hope to publish this in January. Take a look at the website and contact us to let us know what you like on the site and what we could improve, but think about offering stories that will be part of the heritage we leave for our families for the future. If you are not good at writing, we can help with that, either by recording or by taking notes and writing up for you. We hold fortnightly meetings at 6pm at the Holmescarr café and would be happy to have you join us. To find out when the next meeting is, contact Elaine Spencer on 07771 672561. garden view
By Rachel Leverton
Gardening resolutions I
’m a sucker for resolutions. I make loads every year though I have to admit I break most of them too. But it’s January and time for a spot of gardening self-improvement. To this end here are my gardening resolutions.
1. I will take a daily walk around my plot and pull out a few weeds as I go. I will not wait until I can’t stick a pin between the dandelions. Let’s face it gardeners are great procrastinators. But by doing a little and often we can keep our plots looking spick and span.
2. I will not leave seed sowing until it’s too late! This is my personal nemesis. I get carried away by all the glorious seed catalogues, order dozens of packets then pop them in a drawer and forget about them.
3. I will plant all the plants I buy from a nursery as soon as a get them home and definitely before their flowers drop off and they turn up their little green toes. Plants bought from a nursery, especially those in cell pack, are already in less than ideal conditions and letting them dehydrate further will make for a sick, leggy plant more prone to disease. Preparation is the key here. I will make sure I have the correct pots, enough potting compost and the time to spare before I buy. 24
Rossington Today
4. I will clean my gardening tools at the end of each day spent gardening. This is sensible because dirty tools can spread disease. Mild bleach (one part bleach to 10 parts water) or an organic cleaner, which I prefer, will make sure they’re ready for use next time.
5. I will buy another water butt and water my plants faithfully, particularly my pots. Lack of water produces weak root systems. If I know I won’t have the time I’ll invest in an irrigation system. 6. I will start another compost bin. it’s not difficult and will help the environment as I’ll be able to recycle even more of my waste vegetable matter. There are small drums and bins which will suit even the tiniest spot. 7.
I will help wildlife by making sure I provide habitats for birds, bugs and beasties. Any effort I put in will be repaid tenfold. A garden is a little ecosystem. If it functions well there will be natural pest control, pollination and soil conditioning. Those are my resolutions. You may have different ones and that’s fine. I’m sure we’ll break a few along the way but no-one said the path to perfection, particularly gardening perfection was easy. TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 744278

Forgive Dear Friends, and Forget! My two-month-old TV could not switch on for two nights so I had to call in the engineer. Interestingly, the engineer came in and just switched it on with the same remote control that I have used on many occasions to try to do the same. I was annoyed with myself and I had to explain to the engineer that it was the second experience in a month. Just after the engineer had left and I was trying to deal with my anger, I flipped the channel over and it landed on the ‘Victoria Derbyshire Show’. A news item ‘I forgave the driver who cost me my leg’ came up so I decided to sit on the sofa and watch. The comment was that, ‘a cyclist who lost her leg when she was hit by a skip lorry hugged and forgave the driver of the lorry’. Afterwards, as I was reflecting on the story, I was reminded of a similar story in Genesis in the bible. The story is told of a young man Joseph, whom most of us associate with his coat of many colours. His brothers sold him into slavery in Egypt because of his dreams. However, after many years, God helped him to become a prominent man in the political life in Egypt. Later on, these same brothers went into Egypt looking for food and by God’s doing, they found themselves in Joseph’s courtyard. Initially, they did not realise that they were in their brother’s house. Joseph had the chance for revenge and put them into prison but there was a twist. He introduced himself to his brothers, forgave them and later settled them in the best part of the land in Egypt. On Joseph’s part, reconciliation was achieved through his sincere and total forgiveness of his brothers for the evil they had committed against him. Forgiveness is a vital part of the Christian experience. It helps us to relate with God and become responsible to other people, even our enemies. I wonder if I can refer you to two of the many passages in the bible that talk about forgiveness. They are as follows: “For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins (Matthew 6:14-15). Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamour 26
Rossington Today
and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you (Ephesians 4:31-32). Yes! God has forgiven you of your past because of Jesus Christ and he wants you to make a fresh start in 2016. The power is in your hands now whether you want to forgive whoever had offended you or not. Joseph forgave his awful brothers and Victoria Lebrec, the cyclist, forgave the skip lorry driver who took her leg off. She claimed in the news item that she has set herself free from bitterness and resentment and hence, moved on. Likewise, Joseph told his brothers, “Do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you” (Genesis 45: 5) God had been with Joseph in Egypt, and then God saved the lives of his whole family through him. I wonder whether you have realised that God may have taken you through your experiences so that you could lead other people to a better situation after forgiving the perpetrators. In doing so, you could have saved yourself and them from trouble. However, some situations may be very difficult and need time to heal. It may take months or years but forgiveness is still available. This year, may I suggest to you that you use the examples of Victoria Legrec and Joseph the dreamer, to bring reconciliation into your life and that of others so that you can be in a better position to make a great start. Have a blessed and prosperous New Year. Yours sincerely,

Rossington Parish Council Welcome to this month’s Parish Council News May I start this month’s Newsletter by wishing everyone a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year! PARISH COUNCIL MEETING HELD AT ROSSINGTON MEMORIAL HALL AT 7.00 pm on TUESDAY 9 DECEMBER 2015. Guest Speaker: HAZEL SYKES, UPDATE ON SECTION 106 FUNDS FOR EMPLOYMENT AND TRAINING FOR IPORT DEVELOPMENT QUESTION: Is the £200,000 Section 106 monies that was secured through Helios Slough for people in Rossington to access training? ANSWER: £600,000 has been secured with £200,000 already available so training can now get started at the Rossington Miners Welfare Learning Centre (that was funded by Coalfields Regeneration Trust to support a former mining area). The Learning Centre will not only offer training but recruitment to attract local businesses into Rossington. We are working with schools and colleges not just for entry level jobs but so they can take qualifications to enable them to move up the ranks. Each Company has their own criteria, entry level and requirements that need to be matched. QUESTION: You mentioned working with schools and colleges, but what about adults? ANSWER: People generally want a job on their door step and employees tend to like their employees to 28

live locally. There is a low level of unemployment in Rossington but there will be jobs for those who want to work locally. Our focus now is on long-term incapacity and back to the work place. QUESTION: Will there be opportunities for those on lower wages to enhance their skills? ANSWER: We are looking at upskilling but there is no funding for this. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT FROM INCREASE IN TRAFFIC Iain Thomson, Partnership Manager for Harworth Estates responded by explaining the movement of lorries 24/7 was not directly influenced by their development at the former Rossington Colliery. The road corridor was purchased by DMBC so any nuisance arising from misuse or odour, etc. should be reported to the relevant authority. With that in mind they decided not to accept the invitation to the Parish Council meeting but is happy to talk through as and when necessary. ANNOUNCEMENTS • Poppy Day Appeal. Bawtry raised £2,107.09, Rossington raised £2,995.60 which included a donation of £342.00 from Mrs Margaret Webster who knitted and sold 342 poppies. • Parish Precept 2016/17. Continued awareness of the Tour de Yorkshire. To showcase Doncaster and local areas they are looking for ideas on how the Parish Council can get involved to create a carnival atmosphere along the route, see below.
STAGE 1 on Friday 29th April will start in Beverley and finish in Settle - 185km
Doncaster has been chosen to host the Saturday finish of the 2016 Tour de Yorkshire, one of the most prized events in the global cycling calendar. We will also be hosting the finish of the inaugural women’s race, featuring the world’s leading female riders. In our opinion, Saturday will be the most exciting and prestigious day of this blue-ribbon event. The route will encompass some of the most well-known and important landmarks in Doncaster, meandering through the picturesque village of Hooton Pagnell before passing close to the beautiful Brodsworth and Cusworth Halls, looping round the historic Conisbrough castle and flying through Tickhill and Bawtry. Elite riders will then race through Austerfield, before a high speed charge along Bawtry Road, past the racecourse to finish at the top of Bennetthorpe in the town centre. We hope you will join us in welcoming this announcement, and work with us and your local communities so Doncaster makes the most of this amazing spectacle. We want to create a carnival atmosphere which shows exactly what is great about Doncaster to a worldwide audience. We will be organising a meeting in January to which representatives from all parish councils will be invited, along with local businesses and schools, to set out some of the ways communities can get involved. From street parties to other local events, we will support and encourage all local people to celebrate such a renowned international sporting event coming to our borough. Full details of January’s event will follow soon but in the meantime please feel free to email any questions or ideas you may have to: tdy@ doncaster.gov.uk
STAGE 3 on Sunday 1st May will start in Middlesbrough and finish in Scarborough - 198km

Slimming World members lose an amazing 3,300 stone since January 2015! This New Year thousands of people in Blyth, Bawtry, Tickhill and Rossington areas will be embarking on a bid to lose weight and get fit. And Slimming World Consultants in the area are urging dieters to ditch the fad diets and choose a weight-loss plan they can sustain. New research shows that UK weight-loss organisation Slimming World is the most popular and easiest plan to stick to in the long term. Nicky who runs a Slimming World group in Bawtry, says faddy diets aren’t the answer: “Lots of people start January with the best of intentions but by the end of the month so many of them have given up, defeated by hunger, boredom or feelings of deprivation. I want people to know that losing weight doesn’t have to be that way, that not all slimming attempts are doomed and not all ‘diets’ are the same. It’s easy to be wooed by the plans that promise the fastest loss, but it’s really important this New Year that slimmers think sensibly about which plan they choose and look at which offer the most chance of long-term success. Diets based on deprivation can be very unhealthy and are almost impossible to keep up, meaning you’re bound to throw in the towel and will probably be left feeling like a failure by February!” Christine who runs the Tickhill Slimming World group says the key is to choose a realistic healthy eating plan and get support to make lifestyle changes. And Jackie the Rossington consultant is urging slimmers to choose Slimming World after research by Marketing Week magazine, published this January, found that the organisation is the UK’s most popular way to lose weight. A separate recent YouGov poll of 2,000 slimmers who had tried one of the two most popular UK weight-loss clubs in the past two years also discovered people found Slimming World’s Food Optimising plan easier to follow and simpler to stick with in the long run. The YouGov survey found that 92% of respondents who were attending a Slimming World group said they didn’t feel hungry and 88% enjoyed being able to eat normal every day foods instead of being pushed to purchase ready meals or convenience foods. 30
Rossington Today
Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan encourages members to satisfy their appetite on hundreds of healthy ‘Free Foods’, including fruit and veg, pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meat, fish, eggs, pulses and fatfree dairy, freely without the need for weighing, counting and measuring. It means they can enjoy all their favourite meals just by making small changes to the way they shop, cook and eat and still eat the same healthy dishes as the rest of their family. The beauty of Slimming World’s plan is that it addresses the psychological needs of slimmers: “When people think about losing weight they expect to feel hungry and deprived, but since it began in 1969 Slimming World’s plan has always been about helping people to lose weight without feeling like that. Human nature means that the minute something’s forbidden you only want it more, so with Slimming World no foods, even high-fat snacks and alcohol, are banned, they’re just limited. Because you can satisfy your appetite on ‘Free Foods’ you don’t ever have to feel hungry and it’s easier to reduce the amount of unhealthy foods you’re eating so, over time with the right support, this new balanced way of eating becomes second nature” said Dani the Blyth consultant In fact getting support is as important as changing eating habits: “There’s no denying that changing the habits of a lifetime can be challenging and there will be times, perhaps when your weight loss slows down or a ‘bad week’ leads to a temporary gain, when it can be tempting to give up. That’s where getting support week in, week out to make changes and keep them up comes in. At Slimming World members develop the skills and tools to overcome the psychological and emotional challenges that every slimmer faces at some point, including learning to be kind to yourself and get ‘back on the horse’ when you do have a blip. Anyone who wants to lose weight this New Year will find a world of support at the their nearest Slimming World group” continued Christine. To join a Slimming World group near you, see the advert in this magazine or alternatively visit www.slimmingworld.com for more information. T TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 744278

Tickhill and District Lions May we start by wishing you all a Happy New Year and saying a big thank you to everyone who supported our Grand Christmas Draw which was held at Tickhill Cricket Club on December 15th. To the companies, listed below, who donated prizes, the many friends who also provided items, the local businesses and individuals who helped us sell the tickets and, of course, to all of you who purchased the tickets -thank you very much. If you were one of the many lucky winners then we have probably already been in touch but you should find a list of winners wherever tickets were on sale. During December we escorted Santa on his sleigh round most of the roads within the Tickhill and District area giving out hundreds of Christmas cards and receiving many cards and wish lists. Thank you to all who greeted us so warmly and made such kind donations. It is wonderful to see the looks on the faces of the young children when they meet Santa.
At Tickhill and District Lions we pay all of our own expenses and administration costs so you can be sure that every penny you donated will be carefully spent helping deserving causes over the coming year. So thank you once again from Tickhill and District Lions and from all the people that your donations will help. List of local Companies who have donated Grand Christmas Draw prizes.
