You will be receiving this magazine sometime over the Easter period, and this year Easter Sunday coincides with the start of British Summer time. This brings with it the lighter evenings and the promise of warmer days. It does also mean that Easter Sunday is an hour shorter than it should be, but for me that is a small price to pay for the added daylight at the end of each day. Spring often seems to be the time that many of us start making plans for improvements to our homes and gardens. Whether it is fresh new soft furnishings, a spring deep clean, an improved garden ahead of the summer months or a much bigger renovation or extension project, this magazine is packed full of people who can help you with those plans. Don’t forget to tell them where you found them if you give any a call! The May issues will be delivered to you late April. We have brought the distribution forward a little so that the vast majority will be delivered ahead of the Tour de Yorkshire day on 30th April. This will allow us to include all the most up to date information for the events of the day within our pages. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 9th April (yes the closing date has to be early too – although actually still the 2nd Friday of the month as it usually is). Enjoy April and I will be back in a months’ time with your May magazine.
Best wishes, Paula x paula@todaypublications.co.uk | t: 01302 969696

Cause for a Cuppa! Good morning/afternoon/ evening (your pick)! Hasn’t March been a whirlwind?! Mother’s Day and Easter nearly landed on top of each other this year. I hope you enjoyed both. As the timing this year is so odd, I had a hard time fitting Mother’s Day and Easter in one visit. But as a parting comment in trying to tie the two together, I came across something I never considered in my nearly 40 years of being a Christian. Thinking about mothers and Jesus’ relation to his own mum, it really struck me as to a particular comment Jesus made whilst on the cross. Sensing His own death very near as his mother was watching, Jesus cared so much for her that he directed “the disciple whom He loved” to take care of her (John 19:26). Most think Jesus was speaking to the disciple John. Quite probably Joseph
died an early death, leaving Mary a widow. Jesus thought much of His own mum, even at the hour of His death. That then leads us to this thing of probably the most debated event in all of history ... that of the resurrection. Christianity is unique amongst the world religions in that it is not about a set of rules, regulations, do’s and don’ts. It is not about specific prayers or rituals. It is not about particular days. It is about a Person. That’s Person’s name is Jesus Christ. Actually for ages, I thought “Jesus” was His first name and Christ was His surname. I had one of big “aha!” moments when I found out how it all worked. Christ was more like a title, like “Dr”. It was a title that meant “special One.” The one thing about this person that makes Him stand out is that of the resurrection. What do you think about this idea of a resurrected Christ? If you are skeptical, I can relate. I, personally, battled over this myself. I was born skeptical, from a family of skeptics (most of whom are still skeptics), doubting and requiring an explanation on how such a thing could happen. What I found surprised me. Maybe you are like I was. Maybe it was the engineer in me. It all had to fit together properly for me to even consider this “Christianity” thing. I thought ... “Here they are, a group of people who followed a Man who consistently claimed He would be put to death and rise the 3rd day.” I mean, surely, all someone had to do was produce the body of Jesus then this whole Christianity thing would be put to bed and fade away. There were enough enemies of this
“Teacher” that it should have been easy to produce. Why would the enemies of Christ want to see a lie spread throughout the world? Even the religious crowd didn’t like Him. Well, what if the disciples wanted to put one over on the world and actually took the body and hid it? It wouldn’t have been that hard. There were many places to hide a body and CSI was never even thought of at that time! The term, “CCTV” would have brought nothing but puzzled looks. What I just couldn’t get over was that if these lot, the disciples, were the ones who hid the body, why would they then proclaim a resurrection they knew to be untrue and die as martyrs for a lie? It made no sense to me at all. The friends of Jesus would not have died for a lie and on top of that, their claim to have seen the resurrected Christ actually energised them! I couldn’t argue my way past this. It was then I said “yes” to Jesus. Though I realise by the time you get this, Easter would have passed. Would you consider this “Jesus” Person? What if it is all true? I have talked to many who have said “I’m not religious”. Well, that may be the case but whether someone is religious or not has nothing to do with whether Christianity is true or not. We offer a course called “Christianity Explored” that gives you an opportunity to ask questions and more importantly, get them answered. As always, the door is always open and the kettle is on. I wish a great April to you as we welcome Springtime!

An Appeal to Dog Walkers It is now coming up to the summer period and I love sitting in my back garden or gardening. But this is becoming increasingly uncomfortable over the last couple of years and am not looking forward to this year. The reason is dog walkers who walk along the back of the houses on Kepple Close and Bond Street. There is no privacy and the dogs along the houses 14

Goodbye from the FARRRS Team Having become neighbours with the Rossington Community whilst we’ve constructed the FARRRS scheme, we’d like to take the opportunity to thank you for your support over the past couple of years during our construcƟon works. We have thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of building the new road and the associated bridges and structures. The Carillion team and our suppliers all feel a real sense of pride and achievement in compleƟng our works and in doing so we feel we have contributed to a scheme which will no doubt achieve its goals of aƩracƟng investment into the area and ƐƟmulaƟng growth and opportunity within the region. It is very impressive that the adjoining development plans are already materialising with Doncaster Sheĸeld Airport now oĸcially the fastest growing airport in the UK, the commencement of the iPort and of course the housing works on Rossington Colliery.

Whilst being your neighbours we have thoroughly enjoyed the interacƟon that we’ve had with the village. This has involved helping the Parish Council, providing support and assistance with events at Rossington Miners Welfare and contribuƟng to other projects in the community, but by far the most rewarding experiences that we’ve had is working with the students at Rossington All Saints Academy and Tornedale Infant School. These schools have welcomed us in to their classrooms where we have launched a Technology Challenge, conducted a bridge building workshop, supported Careers Fairs, Raising AspiraƟon and Employability days and we’ve also hosted site visits where the children have seen Įrst-hand our construcƟon operaƟons. The energy and enthusiasm that the children exhibited was great to see and hopefully we have inspired some of these young people to consider pursuing careers in our very rewarding industry.

D We would like to take the opportunity to say a big Thank You to Katherine Warman, who, for 3 years, has been our ‘Art Supporter’ for Rossington. She has raised the profile of all sorts of arts and crafts carried out by villagers and their families, as well as in the schools. This has been through Right Up Our Street, which, with Arts Council funding given to key Doncaster communities, has helped create numerous events of enjoyment and celebration of visual and musical activities. We’ve had exhibitions, craft workshop days, a Song for Rossington, a Fun Palace and an embroidered Rossington Village Quilt created to commemorate the centenary of the start of the First World War which has toured the schools and has been shown in other Doncaster venues. Katherine also led the team for the Halloween Handmade Parade last year with spiders, bugs and webs appearing all over the village. Together with the Quilt, this has set the precedent for more community activities including another larger parade in 2017. She leaves us to go on to new paths of her artistic career and we look forward to hearing more about Katherine, and wish her a fond farewell and a successful future Her last supported event was on Sunday, 13 March, when as a starter for the next parade, there was a Parade Arts Day at the Welfare. There were activities for all, and the chance for villagers to talk about what sort 20
Rossington Today
Support from Right Up Our Street continues as Katherine leaves us, with Rossington people volunteering as Associates to meet up regularly with other parts of Doncaster and get involved in joint ventures, and share successes. Right Up Our Street’s next big event will be when the Tour de Yorkshire heads to Doncaster on 30 April. Watch out for information about that! A larger group of Rossington volunteers has been brought together as Rossington Parade and Community Arts Project and from this group, which meets monthly, more Fun Days and the Parade for 2017 are key aims. Those in the group have learned much from Katherine and Right Up Our Street about staging events, and they are looking forward to achievements being seen in the village from later this year. Watch this space. Find out more about Right Up Our Street and upcoming events at rightupourstreet.org.uk T

The assessor who reviewed the various events held in the academy, the feedback from parents and ways learning is supported, made the following comments: · Working with parents is core principle of the school. Relationships between the staff and the parents are very strong. · The school is a very well organised learning environment which reflects the high standards of the school. · The school runs a range of family learning events which are popular. · The school’s most recent OFSTED inspection highlighted how effective the school was in working with it’s parents. · Communication between school and home is effective and the parents feel well informed about events and how their children are progressing. The reports are free of educational jargon. · The staff are very approachable. Parents are confident to ask questions and share concerns. Mrs Chappell, Principal of Grange Lane Infant Academy, commented that the process of gaining the award has been an extremely positive experience. The Leading Parent Partnership Award has really made the academy reflect on developing those strong partnerships with parents and the community. We know that by continuing to gather feedback from parents this will help us to develop the academy and build on our GOOD OFSTED results Pupils celebrate with the excellent report from LPPA T TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 969696

garden view
By Rachel Leverton
Spring has Sprung Digging is really only something I do with ground that is being cultivated for the first time. Mostly I use a fork and work in fertiliser as I go along. I like to use an organic fertiliser and tend to go for poultry manure pellets. I sprinkle them round shrubs, roses and perennials. The application instructions will vary but generally it’s about three handfuls to the square metre. It’s magical stuff when lightly forked in. It gives the plants a boost and builds up the levels of beneficial soil bacteria. Now is the time I dig up my overcrowded border plants and split them into smaller clumps. These can be used to plug the gaps elsewhere in my garden, or given to friends to help plug the gaps in theirs!
How to… Plant a container-grown shrub. Soak the compost for an hour before planting. Make sure the root ball of the shrub is sufficiently moist. Check to shrub is suitable for the site. Dig a hole that is larger than the root ball. Work well-rotted garden-compost or planting mixture into the bottom of the hole and mix it with the soil you removed when you dug the hole. Plant the shrub o that the top of the root ball is just fractionally below the finished soil level. Firm the earth around with your boot. Water the plant in and spread an organic mulch on top.
Make sure you use a bit of fertiliser and water them in if the ground is dry. I spread a good 3 inch / 8cm layer of mulch around my border, between the plants. Choose from wellrotted manure or garden compost, chipped bark or cocoa shells. This seals in moisture and keeps the weeds down, essential at this time of year when they start growing like...well...weeds! If you haven’t already done so give your roses a prune taking care to remove any dead or diseased stems completely. 28

Rossington Parish Council Welcome to this month’s Parish Council News Extract from MINUTES OF THE PARISH COUNCIL MEETING HELD AT ROSSINGTON MEMORIAL HALL AT 7.00 pm on TUESDAY 8 March 2016 ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT FROM INCREASE IN TRAFFIC Update from Cllr. Rachel Blake - urgent meeting with the Mayor to ensure she is aware of the lack of action that has been taken as well as the concerns expressed at Tuesday’s Parish Council meeting. Conversations were had with DMBC legal department and they were informed by the Mayor that the enforcement notice needed to be served. The notice has now been served so if you see vehicles leaving or arriving the site outside of their agreed hours please contact the planning officer or your ward councillors so that further enforcement action can be taken. Other issues regarding the route that lorries need to take once the new road opens, width restrictions and weight restrictions were also discussed, along with an urgent need for the spur road directly into the site to be built and she will be meeting with the appropriate departments to progress these. Also, the Mayor is happy to attend the next parish council meeting on 12 April. Cllr. Clive Stone also met with the EA requesting an urgent sit down and clarification to our concerns, and recent site inspections, carried out by EA. Following Tuesday’s Parish meeting and the anger at apparent lack of concern from regulatory bodies. Rossington Gardeners Association urgently require volunteers. They are appealing to all current and new 32

DMBC Communities team update. Clean for the Queen Saturday 5th of March saw the Clean for the Queen community tidy up come to Rossington. The DMBC communities team, along with assistance from the woodlands team organised a general tidy up of Holmescarr wood and Attlee avenue park. The event was well supported by members of the 3rd Rossington scout group. A total of thirty refuse bags were removed from the park and the wood on the day along with around a ton of general waste, scrap metal and larger items including a complete garden shed, a fridge and a double mattress. Any items too big to be removed on the day were centralised for removal later by the DMBC FLAG team. A fantastic effort by all those involved. If you have any bulky item you need to dispose of please, please don’t dump them in the wood, ring the DMBC help desk on 01302 736000 to arrange a collection.

Update from Councillor
Rachael Blake This month’s update is all about roads and traffic which is the biggest concern that residents talk to me about as well as some information about what’s happening in the village. In last month’s update I started by writing “at the time you read this the Link Road from Parrots Corner will be open” and this time I can write that the road from West End Lane will also be open. Most people seem happy with the road and the difference it makes to their journey times. Improved road markings have been requested and will be done, additional trees will be planted and the footpath and flooding issues are being looked into, but all in all, it’s good for Rossington and Doncaster. Crossing for the Village 2 residents and I met with the Highways engineer and monitoring of the road is going to take place in April – after which we will be told what happens next. Flooding on West End Lane It was good to be told that the drainage problems that I asked DMBC to sort out had solved the flooding problem near the Welfare. I get frequent requests for drains to be unblocked. I am happy to deal with these, or if you prefer you can contact DMBC on 736000 or if you have a smartphone you can download the DMBC app and report all your concerns using that. Bankwood Lane and lorries in the village This continues to be a huge concern for residents. To take enforcement action, both the Environment Agency (EA) and DMBC need evidence. Councillors had been told that they finally had evidence which showed that lorries were going onto the sites before 7.30am and the parish council was told this at their meeting in March but to make sure this enforcement action was taken quickly, I arranged a meeting with the Mayor and thanks to her insistence, the enforcement notice was issued that afternoon. We are also having a meeting with the EA and 36

The army cadets attended with interactive first aid; camouflage face painting and there is the disco as well. Look out for posters about April’s family night or call into the Welfare for more information. Another great community venue is the Holmescarr Centre, where there is so much happening for people of all ages, and lots of support and services available. The café is fantastic with really friendly volunteers. If you haven’t called in it is worth a visit to take part in some of the activities, or just meet with friends in the café and stay for as long as you want to. As usual I don’t have enough room to include everything that I am doing – please do contact me to find out more, tell me what needs to be doing and if you want me to include anything in my updates. Service Dear Friends, Most churches prepare for Easter by organising lent courses. I was at one recently and we reminded ourselves that Jesus predicted his death and resurrection but his followers did not get it. Rather they were busy fighting amongst themselves about who would be the greatest after Jesus leaving them. Jesus found out and his response is as follows: So Jesus called them to him and said, “As you know, the kings and great men of the earth lord it over the people; but among you it is different. Whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant. And whoever wants to be greatest of all must be the slave of all. For even I, the Messiah, am not here to be served, but to help others, and to give my life as a ransom for many.”’ (Mark 10: 42 - 45) (Living Bible) In today’s world, a leader usually has special privileges and is treated better than everyone else. I wonder how you would feel if you arrive at work one day and find your boss cleaning the office. How about your husband cooking you a meal after you have spent a long day with the children or at work? And what if he did that often? Some of us may find these illustrations very unusual? This is because some people and cultures have a different conception of what leadership and service are. Some people even see service as a form of weakness. However, Jesus tells us and shows us that service is a sign of strength. It takes inner strength to serve those around you. I wonder if leaders who find it difficult to serve are simply afraid of their weaknesses.
different from what the world expects. I wonder if I can remind you that being a leader involves helping others. Leadership also includes being prepared to accept your fault when you are wrong. What about being honest and accepting that you do not know the answer to a problem? That is a sign of good leadership. It will even be prudent if you ask for help as you lead people. I wonder if you can pause and take a look at the leadership examples around you and at your own leadership style as well. If you’re a parent, how do you lead your children? As a husband, how do you serve your wife? Wives, how do you serve your husbands? What about being the boss at your workplace or in the community? How do you serve? Service is love as well. I want to remind my Welsh friends that in March you celebrated St. David’s Day. As at the time of writing this piece, my Irish friends were also preparing to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. These two saints are good examples of the fact that good leadership requires love and service. This Easter season, I wonder if I can remind you that Jesus served his followers and others even to his death. He rose from death and empowers us to love as he did. He is our servant-leader and wants us to follow him. We can only do so if we ask God to empower and guide our leadership and relationships with other people. He also entreats us to love and serve others as he did. May God bless you in all your endeavours especially, as you serve this month. Yours sincerely,
Rev. Dr. Frank Okai-Sam Methodist Minister for Adwick, Auckley, Bawtry Harworth, Rossington, Sprotbrough, Sprotbrough Road, and Tickhill. Phone: 01302857952 E-mail: frank.okai-sam@methodist.org.uk Home Address: 10, Fieldhouse Road, Sprotbrough, Doncaster DN5 7RP

Keith Scott is hoping to be on the market with his albums of photos once the weather improves. The numbers of new Friends to the Facebook page has increased by over 100 per month since Christmas, and we are seeing more people sharing memories and images. Contact Keith via his page if you would like him to give a talk and bring his albums to a venue, such as a retirement home. Residents have already gained from such visits. T

As I prepare this report a fortnight before Easter it is pleasing to know that all sixty of our Giant Easter Eggs are with hotels, restaurants, pubs, shops and clubs for raffling off to customers. We are so grateful for the kindness of all the businesses and their customers in supporting the fundraising which enables us to maintain our help for needy individuals, causes and charities. Sunday 30th April will be a big day for Tickhill with the Tour de Yorkshire cycle races passing through on the same day as the Scarecrow Festival is being held. With more than five hours between the race for the ladies and the men’s race, Tickhill is keen to provide suitable facilities for visitors who may stay all day scarecrow spotting and watching the cycling. Lions will be running a barbecue stall alongside the Scarbrough Arms Beer Festival to assist with feeding the expected crowds. On Friday 24th June there will be another event in the 44
