Roy L. Smith The Christmas issue already and the last magazine of 2015. It doesn’t seem like a year has passed since I was last writing my Christmas magazine introduction! Once again I am totally disorganised, not a present has been bought, nor a card written, and although I bought my Christmas cards back in August, I have no idea where I put them! Never mind it will all get done, it always does. As always I will be trying to support my local shops in the run up to Christmas. Details of many such shops and services can be found within these pages and I am sure that all of them appreciate you considering local companies not just at Christmas but all through the year. Finding ways of diverting even just a tiny bit of your spend to Independents is an excellent way of ensuring that our local communities retain their individuality and that we have a large choice of local shops and services for years to come. I am looking forward to relaxing and spending some quality time with my family for a few days between Christmas and New Year, and I am very lucky that I am able to do this. I know that there are a great many people who will be working hard throughout Christmas keeping our hospitals open, caring for our elderly, serving in our armed forces, keeping public transport running and providing numerous other essential services. The January 2016 issue will be delivered to you late December. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Thursday 10th December. December is the month that I squeeze a month’s work into 3 weeks while also preparing for Christmas and my calendar for December is already filling up with extra social events and annual commitments, so once again I do ask that you endeavour to get your items to me on time. Wishing you and your family and friends a very Happy Christmas. Enjoy the seasonal festivities and I will be back in a months’ time with your first magazine of 2016!
Best wishes, Paula x

Creating memories! Can you believe it? Christmas is here already! I will say this next bit quickly, but just as a reminder … Christmas 2015 comes once. Make a memory. Regardless of any past pain, enjoy the family you have around you now. They need you. You need them. Better yet, if you know of someone who will be alone this Christmas, invest some time in them and make this holiday one for them (and you) to remember At our church, we have enjoyed a Christmas Eve carol service with a twist for a few years now. We invite as many as possible to participate. It’s not about talent but about sharing. One song that several have liked (including me!) is a story song called “Mary Did You Know”. It approaches the Nativity from a unique perspective that we often forget. You see, we know the story of Jesus ... His life, activities, death, burial and
resurrection. There are songs, dramas, films and theatrical performances that illustrate these events many times over. But AT THE TIME, Mary didn’t have the advantage of having that bit of history recorded in a Book as we have now. Sure, due to the circumstances (not many virgin births happening on those days … well, or any days for that matter) and the words, “He will be great and called the Son of the Most High” (Luke 1:32) she must have cottoned on that something special was about to happen. I wonder … what did she know? The song is a series of question/ statements such as ... “Mary, did you know that your baby boy would give sight to a blind man”. Since he was going to be great as the angel told her, was she on an a continual emotional high thinking that her Son would be the one to overthrow the Roman tyrants. Would He be the one to force that government out and bring about a Jewish nation again? Would He doing something amazing for the economy? This is one of those times when I wish not only
to have a video of what was happening but to be able to peek inside her mind. With all the things I doubt she knew, there is one thing I am sure she didn’t expect. She never would have thought that some 30 years later, an angry mob would be calling out for capital punishment for the One that had done no wrong … her Son. She would not have envisioned Him being put on a Roman cross. What made this all bearable? Way back when the angel announced the birth to her, her response was simply “May your word to me be fulfilled.” She entrusted God with her Son. Remember, that trusting God with our children does not mean the absence of pain but a promise of peace. Because Mary trusted God with her Son, we can experience that peace as well. I wish you all a very blessed, peaceful Merry CHRISTmas. Visit a church, carol service, nativity this year and find a bit of what Mary didn’t know. Remember, the door is always open and the kettle on.

Farewell and Moving Forward It was with real sadness on the 16th of October 2015, that parishioners bade farewell to father John MacNamee who retired as Parish Priest after 27 years’ service within Christ the King, Rossington and Holy Family, Finningley. The occasion was marked by a Celebration Mass and presentation, followed by a buffet in the Rosary Hall. The evening was well attended by parishioners, priests, friends, family, staff (past and present) of St Joseph’s Catholic Voluntary Academy and also the Rt Rev Ralph Heskett Bishop of Hallam. We all had a wonderful evening and it was a fitting way to wish Father MacNamee a long and happy retirement. Moving forward the people of the Parish would like to make everyone aware that even though Father MacNamee has retired it is still ‘business as usual’ within our churches and mass times continue as normal: 6:00 p.m. Saturday Evening Mass at Church of the Holy Family, Finningley. (The church and parking for parishioners can be accessed through a security barrier which is situated on Fountains Court, Second Avenue, Finningley. – Please be aware that the area surrounding the Holy Family 12

Update from Councillor
Rachael Blake A fantastic fireworks display and an amazing Halloween parade along with the Remembrance Sunday commemorations showcased everything that is good about the village. The Halloween parade which was part of the work by RightUpOurStreet was open to everyone to take part in whatever age and the costumes that people had made were really good. The Halloween bands added a carnival flavour to the day and as the parade left the Children’s Centre and worked its way to Miners Welfare many residents were lining the streets and coming out of houses to watch the parade pass by. A resident said to me afterwards how good it was to see something so different and unique happening in the village and we need more things like this. The Parish Council again put on a very good free event and a great firework display. I was privileged to be able to be involved in Remembrance Sunday in the village organised very efficiently by the British Legion, as we all showed our respect for those who gave their lives for our country. Supporting the community and being at community events is something that I think is a very important part of a councillors’ role as well as getting resident’s individual problems resolved and making sure that the village gets the best deal it possibly can. I was pleased to hear at the Radburn TARA that I attend regularly that some of the issues we talked about when we went on a walkabout with DMBC’s Head of Street Scene have now been sorted including improvements to the community garden. I have been contacted by a number of residents recently who were concerned about blocked gullies – all that I have reported are being cleaned, but unfortunately I have been told that they don’t expect a routine clean in the village in the next few months. Please contact me if you have particular concerns. Also I have met residents who have had to deal with flooding problems for 30+ years. I have arranged for the drainage engineer to assess the affected area and the problem is being resolved, so please let me know if this is a concern for you.
Bus Consultation In last month’s update I mentioned the planned changes to buses for the village. A consultation on a Doncaster Bus Partnership has been launched. What this means to Rossington is that the Service 55/55b will be a new service 55/56 and will link Rossington to Lakeside and the Town Centre via FARRS. If you use buses please do complete a questionnaire at travelsouthyorkshire/com/dbp. Paper copies can be obtained from the Interchange or will be available at the drop in sessions. There are drop in sessions taking place in December; 9th at the Civic Offices from 2-5 and 10th from 3-6 at Rossington Miners Welfare. 16
Rossington Today
The consultation closes on 18 December and paper questionnaires have to be returned by 16 December.
DMBC Funding for voluntary groups Doncaster Council is delighted to announce the creation of the Doncaster Voluntary & Community Support Fund, offering grants up to £30,000 to eligible organisations within the borough of Doncaster. Up until March 2018, the Programme will support the delivery of the Council’s Corporate Plan priorities by funding suitable third sector projects. For further information please look at the DMBC website or call 01302 736000.
Reinstatement of PACT meetings PACT meetings are residents’ opportunity to meet with South Yorkshire Police (SYP) and partner organisations to raise their concerns and work with the police to agree priority areas for the ward. In our ward, unlike other wards we haven’t had a sit down meeting, instead it has taken the form of a drop in at Asda which I know hasn’t been popular with residents. I was pleased to receive information last week from SYP that a sit down monthly meeting will be held once a month in different locations throughout our policing area. I hope to have details of the meetings in the near future, so will include them in my next update.
Golf and Recycoal At the November Parish Council meeting, there was a presentation from the golf course developers – they are expecting to have submitted their planning application by the end of November. These are the same timescales that Recycoal are working to, to re-submit their plans for how the site will be developed and within what timescales.
How to Contact Me I have 2 surgeries in the village but please contact me anytime by phone, text or email. Last Tuesday of every month – 3.15 – 4.45pm at the Children’s Centre, Grantham Street – please note that for December only the session will be from 2-4 to fit in with the centre’s opening times 2nd Friday of every month – 4.45 – 5.30 at Miners Welfare Tel: 07976896563/01302 710251: Twitter @CllrRachaelB: Email: Rachael.blake@doncaster.gov.uk Thank you for reading and thank you very much for your support in 2015. TIS THE SEASON TO GO SKIING!... There can be a seasonal slant to the work of a Physiotherapist and the winter months see an influx of skiing related issues. But hitting the slopes doesn’t have to lead to trouble. Here are some tips for a happy trip… Get SKI fit Even if you are usually fit, it’s important to recognise that you still probably only ski for 1 or 2 weeks a year and you will need to tweak your normal fitness routine accordingly. If your baseline fitness is poor, you really must address this 12 weeks before your trip. Poor fitness leads to fatigue and fatigue leads to injury. Most skiing injuries occur after 3pm on the 3rd day of a trip – when fatigue reaches a peak.

garden view
By Rachel Leverton
Which Christmas Tree? When we were kids my brother christened our rather sorry old artificial tree the Silver Lurch, on account of its colour and list. Artificial trees have improved enormously since then but most gardeners do prefer the real thing. There’s something magical about bringing a bit of the outside indoors at this time of year. Unfortunately trees were not meant to live in centrally-heated sitting rooms. It puts them under a lot of stress. So which trees survive Christmas best? Well there are several species available to the British public. The main choices are between pines, spruces and firs. The traditional Christmas tree is Picea Abies, the Norway Spruce. Most popular they may be but they are actually least suited to the conditions inside the average home. Spruces are much more prone to shed needles than firs or pines. Pinus Sylvestris and Pinus Contorta are respectively better known as the Scots Pine and the Lodgepole Pine. Their longer needles hold well but do make hanging decorations a bit tricky for small fingers, which is worth noting if your children like to help. If that’s not an issue the widely spaced branches show off larger baubles very well. The Corsican Pine (pinus Nigra Laricio) is not as common but has similar properties. Firs are the best choice for a British Christmas. If you want the best, and you can find one, plump for Abies Noblilis, the Noble Fir. In its perfect form it’s hard to beat: uniform in shape with more open
branches on the top, its flat, short needles have amazing retention properties. It’s trickier to grow well than most other trees so expect to pay a bit of a premium. The Nordman Fir (Abies Nordmanniana) runs the Noble Fir a close second. It is easily available now as many tree growers invested heavily in the species. They are generally cheaper than the Noble Fir so a good choice if cost is an issue. The Fraser Fir and the lemon-scented Douglas Fir are also worth seeking out. Once you have your tree, make a fresh cut across its trunk and give it a good drink of tepid water before bringing it inside. Secure it properly in a specially made base which is the right size for your tree! A toppled six foot tree, a couple of gallons of water and a hundred or so baubles make a seriously large For true eco-friendliness mess...I know buy British-grown trees. this to be true Most councils offer a Christmas because several tree shredding service. The Christmases shreddings are then composted. ago I was the person clearing Artificial trees are generally non-biodegradable. it all up at two in the morning... don’t make my Christmas tree farms act as a carbon sink, fixing mistake! Merry environmental carbon dioxide Christmas!

Rossington Parish Council FIREWORK DISPLAY Thank you to all the brave souls who ventured out on what was a pretty miserable night weather wise with the constant drizzle! Hopefully you all enjoyed a terrific display brought to you by your Parish Council, I particularly liked the children singing along to the song from the film Frozen. It was also pleasing to hear the round of applause at the end of the display and I would like to add my appreciation to everyone who contributed to putting the event on Parish Councillors, Anne & Zoe and all the staff at the Welfare, well done let’s make it bigger and better next year! PANTOMIME Jack and the Beanstalk pantomime tickets can be bought from Miners Welfare, the Poacher, Rossington Memorial Hall and Lads and Dads Hairdressers. Adults £1, children 6 to 16 - 50 pence. MEETINGS • RPC 7.00 pm Tuesday 8 December at RMH and Tuesday 12 January 2016 • Planning Committee - 6.15 Tuesday 22 December 15 and Tuesday 26 January 2016 ROSSINGTON HALL DEVELOPMENTS At the Rossington Parish Council meeting 10/11/15 Graham Raynor presented the latest vision for the PGA Golf Course. Their aim is to submit a Planning Application by the end of November 2015. The 500 acres of land is from Bawtry Forest to the East Coast Mainline, the Great North Road and Littleworth Lane. There are four landowners who all support the development. As well as the 72 hole PGA European Tour Golf Course there will a be a 9 hole course that will double up as a car park when major events
happen. 500 aspirational houses of high quality but low density will be built in discreet areas around the golf course. The development of the new houses will fund the expenditure of the golf course which will have a club house and golf academy. All the necessary reports have been completed such as Flood Risk Assessment, Ecology, Archaeology, etc Graham and Rossington Hall Developments were then asked a number of questions from the Parish Councillors present: QUESTION: Will there be housing on the small golf course. ANSWER: No QUESTION: How far up Littleworth Lane will the development be? ANSWER: Not as far as the Park and Ride QUESTION: Have you already submitted outline Planning Application? ANSWER: No QUESTION: Have you investigated the drainage issues? ANSWER: We have a drainage strategy looking at problems and how to deal with them. The golf course needs to retain as much water as possible so lakes will be developed. QUESTION: Where are the houses going? ANSWER: There will be 500 houses in total, pockets of which will be spread around the golf course in discreet housing areas. The density is 5 houses to an acre. QUESTION: How will you deal with the volume of parking at the tournaments? ANSWER: Traffic engineers are currently doing a report on the impact. There will be three overflow car parks.
community
Rossington Parish Council QUESTION: What about access? ANSWER: There will be access from Rossington Hall, new access from the Great North Road plus Littleworth Lane. There will be an internal loop of roads around the site. Traffic will not come through Rossington Village. QUESTION: Will it be a separate village? ANSWER: It will be separate because of the railway line. RESOLVED to note the Parish to present ways in which better links can be made between the Development and Rossington. QUESTION: Are the housing estates going to be tight? What about the golf balls going over houses? ANSWER: This will not happen due to the landscaping of the areas. QUESTION: Have you plans to expand the golf course? ANSWER: No. The original idea was to have two 18 hole golf courses but this was not a prerequisite for PGA. Rossington will have one long course which is very attractive. QUESTION: What will you do with the field when it is not a car park? ANSWER: It probably won’t be used when there isn’t a tournament. One of the landowners is part of this project so will make land available as and when for a car park. QUESTION: A golf course can take a while to settle and mature? ANSWER: There will be a delay until the houses have been built. It will take 12 months from sewing the grass to be ready for usage but it will take 2 years to be ready for the PGA Tournament. We are aiming to have a Yorkshire Golf Competition on Yorkshire Day 2020. QUESTION: The Racecourse and Airport are pluses for us but a Tournament only happens every 2 years. Are there other occasions it will be used?
ANSWER: Yes it will be used every day. Bessacarr Golf Club is in favour of the development. QUESTION: There have been a lot of projects in Rossington and the Parish have supported them all but they have not resulted in jobs for local people so why should we give you support? ANSWER: Rossington Hall employs 30 part-time workers some are Rossington residents. RESOLVED to note that the Parish to provide a shopping list of jobs. QUESTION: Concerns have been raised about the draining of the duck pond, the Common Land off the A1 and Badger Sets. ANSWER: An Ecology Report has been completed where they consulted with local Badger experts. An arrangement will be made to work around them. RESOLVED to note the Ward Cllrs to investigate the Duck Pond and Common Land issues. Rossington Parish Council Contact Details CONTACTS

Christmas Lost for words!
Dearr Friends, December is a month of celebrations that are centred on Christmas and New Year. As much as the celebrations continue into the night and sometimes for days, I wonder if we sometimes find time to reflect on the reason(s) for these celebrations. My local dialect has named December ‘Mumu’ which can be translated as ‘dumb’. In other words, the events that bring reasons for the celebrations may amaze us to the extent that we may be lost for words or ‘dumb’ for hours or even days. Lost for words? Yes! Imagine you being Mary, the mother of Jesus. How would you have treated the news of the birth of your firstborn from an angel you have never seen or met? What about Joseph? An innocent bachelor who only wanted to marry the girl he loved but had to be dragged into the mystery of the virgin birth? Lost for words? Yes! If you were the innkeeper, how would you feel after realising that the couple you disregarded and handed them your sheep pen to sleep in, instead of a bed and breakfast room, was the couple God decided to use to bring the Saviour into the world? Lost for words? Yes! Imagine that you were a shepherd who had been written off by society and are only needed when it was time for the temple sacrifices. You are only important for the time when someone wants to buy your sheep or goat and sacrifice it at the temple. I wonder how you would have felt when an angel of God appeared to you in the bright sky on Christmas morning and asked you to hurry and visit the newly born babe, the Saviour of the world. Lost for words? Yes! If you were a wise man how would you have felt when you realised that upon all your wisdom and knowledge you needed the visit of God’s angel and a guiding star to lead you to the baby who had been born as Saviour of the world. 32

Lost for words? Yes, Herod was! Imagine how Herod felt when the wise men told him the news about the birth of the king of the world who will save us from our sins. I wonder how he would think about his authority in the province of Judea in the coming days or years. Lost for words? Yes, I am! I am lost for words because God loved me so much that he brought his only son into the world at Christmas to live and die for me. I wonder how you feel as well realising that the nativity plays, carol services and the celebrations are not all about shopping and parties but God sending his only son into the world to save you from sin. As part of the celebrations of Christmas, the church in your local community, which is always lost for words because of what God has done for this world, is putting up services and nativity plays in December to celebrate the mystery of Jesus’ birth. It is also celebrating the birth of a new year as we look forward to experiencing new things and growth in our lives in the coming year. I wonder if I can use this opportunity to invite you, as well as your family and friends, to look out on your local church notice boards and in the local magazines for where and when you can join in our celebrations. You are always welcome. Have a merry Christmas and a happy New Year celebration. God bless you. Yours sincerely,

Rossington Village Life On Sunday, 15 November, we had our first event to publicise the website and enjoyed a friendly, sociable day with happy visitors checking out local community groups - Guides and Rainbows, Scouts and Beavers, the History Club, Community Brass Band, Rossington Ark and Crafts, Right Up Our Street, Rossington Main Juniors Football and Old Rossington Photos' albums. They met with Rossington Hall and Golf Development representatives who talked about the future growth of their ventures. Doncaster Family History Society brought materials and advice to help with building family trees, and Doncaster Archives brought historical pieces about Rossington to show us. Those gathering round the table with the photo albums shared memories of village and family life and Keith Scott has confirmed that he is willing to visit other events and venues to share them. They are on a Facebook page which is regularly updated and we are building the archive of them as well as stories about past, present and future on the website. We are marking a year of our existence - Rossingtonvillagelife.co.uk - and the event was a great way to round it off. Our thanks go to the Welfare management and staff for making the venue available to us, and to John Bird Studios, the Labour Club and Melody Maison for contributions to our fund-raising, and to our web master, Nathan Langer of Royal Shield, for facilitating our website as a volunteer. Look out for the 1838 project on the website which is coming soon. This will feature a walk around the villages of Rossington and Littleworth at that date and who lived there then and what the buildings looked like. From Census material, we can see who the people were, and many people in Rossington now are related to those families. If you would like to join our mailing list for new items on the website, join us as a Contact on it. T 34
